UWF 1987: The Boys are Back and Taking Names!

UWF announces new broadcast deals with KMPX in the Mid South and WCOV in the South East

In mid February of this year(1987) UWF President Bill Watts announced that UWF would be holding a 3 Day a Week Southern Rebellion wrestling tour to be shown on both KMPX in the Mid South and WCOV in the South East. In addition to the tour being broadcast on these stations, the monthly UWF events are also set to be broadcast on these two networks. Many in the wrestling industry see these deals as a last ditch effort by Bill Watts to take his company National.

Universal Championship Title Scene

UWF Universal Champion Terry “Bam Bam” Gordy was set to defend the belt against One Man Gang in November of 1986 when he found himself involved in a brawl backstage with “Dr. Death” Steve Williams. In the wild brawl Terry suffered three broken ribs while Williams walked away with a broken arm and a concussion. Gordy tried to defend his title against One Man Gang but UWF doctors would not clear him to wrestle and he was forced to hand the title over to Gang. Gang would then defend the title against Sam Houston, whom he defeated in record time. Gordy has vowed to reclaim the title from Gang as soon as he is cleared to wrestle. In the meantime, Gordy's Fabulous Freebirds “brothers” Michael “P.S.” Hayes and Buddy “Jack” Roberts have been taking out Devastation Inc., the stable of wrestlers run by Skandor Akbar which One Man Gang is a part of, one member at at time. As of March 1987 Deavastion Inc. is down to just Skandor Akbar, One Man Gang, Big Bubba Rogers, and Black Bart.

The UWF Tag Title Scene

After being forced to give up the UWF Tag Team Titles in January of this year due to his partner Jim Duggan losing a Loser leaves the UWF match, Terry Taylor entered the UWF Tag Team Title Tournament with Sam Houston as his partner. Getting knocked out of the tournament by the team of Sting and Rick Steiner in the second round, it seemed like the UWF was set to have brand new tag champions. However, a series of unfortunate circumstances would cause Chris Adams to have a falling out with his partner Iceman King Parsons and getting a chance to replace him with Savannah Jack. Before Adams and Jack could have their second round match, Parsons attacked Jack and left Adams heading into the finals without a partner once more. This time Adams chose Terry Taylor as his partner and the impromptu duo of Taylor and Adams defeated the team of Sting and Rick Steiner to become the new UWF Tag Team Champions. Many teams are said to be heading to the UWF for a shot at the tag belts, but Adams and Taylor vow to take on all comers and remain champions for quite some time.

TV Title Scene

After defeating Buddy Jack Roberts for the belt in November of 1986, Savannah Jack has managed to hold on to the belt despite numerous close matches with several former champions. Pro Wrestling Illustrated had an article last month discussing who in UWF could take the title from Jack and how soon, but don't expect Jack to just roll over and let someone beat him. Jack is scheduled to face off against Jeff Gaylord on the second Power Pro Wrestling of March.

H & H Making Promises

Eddie Gilbert and Missy Hyatt have been promising big things from H & H International, but they have not been able to deliver on that promise as of yet. Gilbert, vowing that H & H Int. were going to be the most famous and powerful stable in all of wrestling, has claimed to be in talks with a current World Champion who wants to compete in the UWF. Rumors have been flying as to the identity of this World Champion and many are claiming it just might be NWA World Champion Ric Flair as Flair has been spotted around the UWF offices in Oklahoma.

Chavo is on fire!

Chavo Guerrero burst on to the UWF scene with a fast paced lucha libre inspired style fans were not used to seeing, but quickly embraced as Chavo racked up victories. Chavo's moonsault body press was voted the most impressive move by PWI magazine and many fans were clamoring for Chavo to receive a shot at the UWF Championship. Due to Chavo's commitment's outside of the US, the UWF Championship Committee have been unable schedule a championship match for Chavo yet but they vow to make it happen as soon as possible.

Some Random Things That Took Place

Angel of Death turned his back on the Fabulous Freebirds and took a contract with Skandor Akbar, joining the Devastation Inc. in late January. Speaking of Devastation Inc., Skandor Akbar has added “Cactus” Jack Foley to his group and promises that he will continue to expand his stable despite the Freebirds taking members of Devastation Inc. out of commission. “White Lightning” Tim Horner has been tagging with Brad Armstrong under the team name Lightning Express and they have been impressing fans and foes alike. The team of “Wild” Bill Irwin and “Bad Bad” Leroy Brown looks to be on its last legs after they lost a match to The Freebirds and both men took the opportunity to blame one another for the loss. Grizzley Smith, Alfred Neely, Jim Holiday, and Ken Mantell were both released as February came to an end.

UWF during this time was loaded with talent and several got wasted. Hope you can protect your stars and use the JCP working agreement well. Already seeing Flair which is great. I chose Ted DiBiase because I feel like he is the top guy in UWF and deserves this chance. Several good storylines starting liking the tour idea and you put on great house shows. Look forward to seeing more from this.</p>

And the crown jewel of Devastation Inc., the UWF Champion, and the man that Terry Gordy was so afraid of he handed over the title...The One Man Gang! I am the NWA Champion and I was sent here by the NWA board of directors to find a wrestler worthy of challenging me. After looking over the roster here in the UWF I have to say...there isn't a single wrestler worthy of my time! <em>The crowd begins to boo but suddenly shifts to a huge cheer as Ted DiBiase comes running down to the ring. Ted, you're my best friend and if anyone deserves a shot at the NWA title you sure as heck do. You see Ric, I checked with the NWA suits in the back and if I want the match with you, then I get it! <em>The crowd pops as Ric Flair is shaking his head and hands to dismiss Steve's comment.</em> Now, because I was crossing the t's and dotting the i's in the back you were able to get out here before me Ted and I wouldn't dream of stealing this opportunity from you. Watts called Flair a dirty yellow belly coward, but Ross commented how this was a smart move on Flair's part. When Williams finally gets Flair in the ring and wrestling it quickly becomes apparent that Flair isn't beyond cheating as he rakes the eyes, delivers low blows, and pins Williams by holding on to Steve's tights. Frustrated, Steve gets in the referee's face as Flair takes the NWA title and sneaks off ending Power Pro Wrestling.</em></p></div></blockquote>

  • 2 weeks later...

UWF Presents:

POWER PRO WRESTLING!

Jim Ross, Boyd Pierce, and “Cowboy” Bill Watts are at the announcers desk

Savannah Jack defeated Jeff Gaylord to retain the UWF TV Championship

Savannah Jack's speed was able to nullify the strength of Jeff Gaylord and we saw Jeff on the defensive as Jack unleashed quick kicks and punch combos. The announcers put Jack's speed over as well as his background in football prior to becoming a wrestler. The match ended with a stiff kick to the head of Jeff Gaylord and a pinfall victory for Jack.

Ric Flair is back again!

After a commercial break we are treated to Ric Flair in the ring just as he was last week. Flair is dressed in his wrestling attire, indicating he is here to fight and not just talk. He has a microphone in hand and the NWA World Championship belt around his waist.

Ric Flair: Last week I was here looking to challenge the best UWF had to offer and all I got was little Steve Williams. I wrestled circles around that wannabe champion and frankly it left me wanting a real challenge! I want someone that might actually have a chance to take this belt from around my waist. So tonight, I will be facing the man I should have faced last week...Ted DiBiase! {The crowd roars their approval.}

Steve Williams comes running out of the back and he slides into the ring. Flair is ready for him to attack but Williams holds his hands up hands to indicate he's not here to fight...yet. He asks for the microphone and Flair hands it over.

Steve Williams: Last week you did defeat me Flair, but that's because you did what you always do...you cheated! It took me over two damn years to get you into a ring fighting for that title and you resort to cheating like the little bi...{Flair swipes the microphone from Williams.}

Ric Flair: Hold on a damn minute buddy! I didn't cheat, I out wrestled you! It took two years because as far as I was and still am concerned, you're not worth my tie! {Williams is getting visibly upset as Flair is talking.} I'm surprised someone as bad as you even found himself a job in this business. {Williams clenches his fist but at the same time Ted DiBiase comes running down to the ring. Ted slides into the ring and gets between Steve and Ric. Ted looks at Steve and tells him to calm down before grabbing the microphone from Ric.}

Ted DiBiase: Ric, last week you cheated this man out of a chance to become NWA World Champion. This week, that belt comes home with me! Steve, buddy...after I take this title off this rat I promise you that you will be the first guy to get a shot at it. Now, I know you want to beat Ric here into a bloody pulp, but I am asking you to go to the back and leave him unharmed. I don't this coward to have an excuse for why he lost that title to me...

Ted drops the microphone and nudges Steve to head to the back with him. Flair looks a bit confused as Steve and Ted walk to the back and the segment comes to close with the announcers throwing it to commercial.

Sid Steele defeated Shane Douglas

As we come back from commercial break we see Shane Douglas in the ring awaiting his opponent Side Steele. Sid comes lumbering down the aisle as the announcers note that Shane Douglas may have made a huge mistake asking for a rematch with the savage and psycho Sid Steele. As Sid enters the ring Shane attacked but it was useless as Sid brushed off Shane's assault. Sid unloaded a series of hard punches followed by a huge boot to the face. Sid then lifted Shane off the mat and slammed him back down hard and fast before making the pin. As Sid was getting his hand raised in victory the announcers were doubtful that Shane would be asking for another rematch.

”Wild” Bill Irwin calls out The Missing Link

UWF Power Pro Wrestling followed up the Sid/Shane match with a video of Bill Irwin. Bill is dressed in typical cowboy gear. He is standing in front of what appears to be a cattle pen.

Bill Irwin: Missing Link, you dumb piece of trash! Do you think you and that woman of the night you hang around with can run your mouth about me? Do you think I wouldn't hear how you were in the locker room bragging how you were in line to get a UWF title shot ahead of me? Now, I have no idea if you are getting a title shot but I can tell you one thing...I'll be damned to hell if a piece of trash like you gets a shot at that title before I do! This week I face Joe Savoldi but every time I bring this right hand crashing down on his face I'm going to be imagining it's that ugly mug of yours!

”Wild” Bill Irwin defeated “Jumping” Joe Savoldi

After a quick commercial break we come back to see Bill Irwin and Joe Savoldi in the ring. After the bell rings Bill goes right after Joe and starts wailing on him with closed fist, getting a stern warning from the referee. Joe used his speed to get away from Irwin and land a few quick drop kicks and a jumping clothesline. The announcers comment how Bill is too focused on The Missing Link and unprepared for the speed and skill of Joe Savoldi. Joe continues his assault but Bill catches Joe's arm and takes him off his feet with a hard back elbow. Irwin stomps a mud hole in Joe before landing a a hard standing Lariat and making the pin.

Steve Williams calls out Ric Flair's assault of Ted DiBiase!

After the last commercial break of the night we see Ric Flair in the ring awaiting Ted DiBiase. The ring announcer makes the introductions and the crowd goes crazy as Ted DiBiase is announced. Ted didn't come out and the ring announcer announced him once again. However, Ted still didn't come out to the confusion of the crowd and the announcers. After a third announcement of Ted's name the referee looks ready to hand Ric Flair a win by forfeit when Steve Williams comes walking out of the back. Steve makes his way to the ring and grabs the microphone from the ring announcer.

Steve Williams: Ric, you really are a piece of work. I have no idea which one of your little rat lackeys is scurrying around backstage but if you think you're gonna get away with ordering them to take Ted out you're dead wrong! {Ric Flair looks confused as Steve keeps talking} Now, I know Ted better than anyone and if it was up to him he would be in this ring but the UWF doctors won't clear a man with a busted open head and a possible concussion. I know you were hoping to have the night off Ric, but it looks like you forgot I was here and ready to kick your...{Ric Flair attacks Steve before he can get the words all the way out.}

Ric Flair defeats “Dr. Death” Steve Williams

The referee scrambles to get the microphone out of the ring and call for the bell as Ric and Steve trade blows in the ring. The announcers speculate which member of Flair's 4 Horseman group might have attacked Ted DiBiase as Steve Williams slams Ric hard into the corner. The crowd is going nuts as Steve is dominating the match with the announcers putting Williams over big time. It looks like Steve learned not to give Ric an inch after last week's match and he nearly pins him after a huge body slam. Williams is like a man possessed and it takes a rake to the eyes by Flair to turn the match back in Ric's favor. Williams never fully recovers from the dirty move by Flair and after several minutes of back and forth wrestling Ric is able to hook Steve in a figure four leg lock and force Steve to tap out. The announcer put Flair over as the NWA Champions, commenting that Williams put up as good a fight as any man could before the show goes off the air.

I have to laugh at Bobby Heenan in the UWF(not that he's there but that you managed to get him), that is certainly going to change the landscape.

Just a quick update, sorry if you thought this was a show post, I've been swamped at work and haven't had time or energy to write the show out completely. I've got it like 70% finishes and should have it done and uploaded by the end of the week. Sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment.

The announcers discussed how these guys were seen as best friends just a few short weeks ago but now Ted DiBiase was looking to exact some revenge on the backstabbing Dr. Death. When the bell rang these two locked up in the center of the ring with Williams getting an early advantage due to his superior strength. To the audiences chagrin Williams was dominating the early match and whenever Ted tried to turn things around Bobby Heenana involved himself allowing Williams to maintain an advantage. Frustrated over the blatant cheating Ted raked the eyes of Williams to the applause of the crowd. Now in control, Ted used his skill and speed to unleash a series of hard hitting holds and moves that lead to several near pins. After a hard hitting lariat, Ted was begging Steve to get back up as the crowd anticipated a the match was coming to an end. Williams got to his feet and Ted scooped him up and delivered a running power slam. Ted the made a pin but as the referee got close to making a three count the bell started ringing furiously. The referee stopped counting and looked at the time keeper to verify the time limit on the match was up but all he saw was Bobby Heenan and the time keeper fighting over the ring bell. The two big men were wearing brass knuckles and the announcers were livid that they were going to steal the match from Gordy. Skandor Akbar distracted the referee and Bubba and Bart were about to enter the ring when Hayes and Roberts, still bleeding and bandaged up, came bolting down to the ring with chairs in hand.
