There might as well have been a horse trough outside and swing doors that creaked to the touch. Once upon a time there may have been. All that was missing was a weather-beaten sign bearing the stencil: ‘Saloon.’ That and a tumbleweed traipsing across the barren, dusty road.

 

It’d have had a job. It was November and Manchester had rained for 6 days straight. Any weed - tumble or otherwise - would’ve found itself clogging up a grid with all the other debris, as rainwater pooled across the road and onto the pavement. A rubbish bin had been set on fire during the night and melted into a stoop of resignation - quite the achievement, considering. The stranger fought against the unrepentant elements and, not for the first time, questioned his journey.

 

Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas any more.

 

The papers in the young man’s back pocket said Arizona, which only goes to show that once something is written down it becomes believable. Especially if you’ve paid a substantial sum of money for it. The journey to England was one giant, fearless leap on the Road To Glory. What it wasn’t was prepared. He cursed his ill-planning as the rain adopted a new tactic of turning horizontal and invading every inch of warmth and comfort.

 

There should have been swing doors. A jangling piano should’ve halted abruptly. There should’ve been a long, drawn-out creak met by silent, moustachioed glares. Instead someone coughed. A dog whined and was kicked. One old man waved from his slouch long enough for the barman to pump him another half-pint of mild. No one spoke.

 

The stranger approached the bar and with each step a new mustiness rose to the air. A concoction of damp carpet, stale beer and apathy. No one spoke. Until -

 

“What do you want?” The barman’s furrowed, bald head raised from whatever had been occupying it long enough to fake an interest in the custom in front of him.

 

“I’ll take a cranberry juice.”

 

A few heads looked up. The screen in the corner was showing Newcastle United versus Cardiff City and the box was on the blink again. It looked like Cardiff may have gone one up.

 

“Huh?” the tilted dome of the barman enquired.

 

“Cranberry juice” repeated the stranger, a little stronger this time.

 

“Hmm” mused the barman. “It’s a natural diuretic. My missus drinks it when she gets her period... You got your period?”

 

The stranger exhaled. While the offence to his manhood was obvious, it took a moment to digest the thick Mancunian accent and form a response. A clap to the back of the barman’s clammy head seemed to suffice and led it swiftly to the counter top and a wincing crunch of nose to wood. The accompanying shriek shrivelled with the collapse.

 

“Awwooooooahhhh Joe. Now why you gonnan done that??” The dog kicker rose. “That’s our only referee.”

 

Geordie Jimmy Morris stood and offered a sly smile. It faded as the static burst again in the corner. The strobing screen showed his beloved Newcastle had conceded a second. Under the table the dog cowered.

He stared into the shallow suds of his pint and yelled something barely coherent at Allan, the barman-stroke-referee currently nursing his nose over the sink. An altercation with the booker incumbent had led to the intimate introduction of Allan’s face to the bar top. As job interviews go, it was a strange one. Few job interviews involve drinking games. Fewer still where the rules aren’t explained. The general gist of this game was to remember who was in front of you and why you had asked them here. Geordie cradled his head again. He hadn’t counted on this. Somewhere he’d agreed to front a new wrestling promotion in Manchester and go on last. He’d heard some wild ones but this was something else. He’d swore to himself that he didn’t do this any more. He was retired! Both knees clicked as he rose from his chair. The right one stung a bit but the left one could bring tears if he caught it just right. He remembered that guard rail in ‘99. And the boys who’d carried him back. Ring Of Fire was meant to be a pioneer. A trailblazer in name and spirit. It was wrestling done the right way. Geordie had always said he didn’t care about the people that didn’t ‘get it.’ He cared about those that did. What it wasn’t was marketable. TV friendly. Geordie Morris wasn’t TV friendly. Sure there were times when he was a little worse for wear, but he wouldn’t have been the only one and this was wrestling, dammit, not choir practice at the local church parish. Wrestling had changed. Now it was all about the slick production values. Who had the best lighting? Who had the biggest video editing truck? Who’s commentators had the company logo embroidered onto their smart, navy blazers? Geordie winced at the pointlessness. None of these things had anything to do with wrestling. It wasn’t the politics, it wasn’t the gates. It was just time. Those seven years in ROF Geordie felt privileged to work with some of the most talented individuals in the United Kingdom and across Europe. Jimmy Morris hadn’t stayed for the death of Ring Of Fire. He’d left for Japan in late ‘05. In his darker moments he likened it to abandoning a terminally ill relative. He couldn’t save them and he didn’t have the stomach or the spine to nurse them through to the end. <p>So this is my Road To Glory diary. It’s the story of a dude from Arizona coming over to England - to miserable, rainy Manchester - to start his wrestling career. I had actually created a character to be the owner (cheap and terrible stats) but was then dealt Geordie Jimmy Morris which seemed infinitely more fun! I’ve ended up hiring the prospective owner as a manager instead so he’ll turn up at some point.</p><p> </p><p>

I’ve hired mostly cheap and terrible workers on the Brit scene, changed their names and their pictures and just tried to make them interesting to me. The only workers created for the game are my user character and the mentioned manager.</p><p> </p><p>

The diary’s not going to be too heavy in match write-ups. I may write more for the angles and promos if they interest me and they’re going somewhere. I’m hoping it’ll be more about building characters, stories, seeing if it’s any fun, seeing if I can keep the company alive, and – ideally – whether my user character does good!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Something long and dangerous emerged, but not the Burmese python fans were accustomed to, Cobra had a length of chain wrapped around his fist! The fans did not know what to make of the scene and after a short while, still wordless, Joe stood up to leave. One brave fan reached over the rail and came close to snatching the doll and Coyote screamed with the anguish of a terrified mother losing her child. With the PWA Anarchist title at stake both men tore into each other and used the steel structure at every availability. This was a wire mesh panel cage and both Geordie and Coyote were sent face first into it several times. Battling past the 10 minute mark, Geordie Morris, visibly tiring, dropped Coyote with a stiff clothesline and made his way to the cage door... only to have it slammed in his face by Roley Barrington-Bean! The schemer had concealed himself at ringside and gone undetected! Coyote managed a pin but Morris kicked out at two. In the continued confusion of Roley at ringside and his protestations to the referee, Coyote Joe reached for his Geordie doll and struck the champion in the head, dropping him to the mat. The loaded doll hit the canvas with a loud thunk. Joe again went for the cover but could only garner a two count. It was a fraction away from three. Coyote howled his frustrations at the prone bleeding Tynesider, bending down and screaming into his face.
