Global Wrestling Council: We're wrestling, not entertainment [CVerse, Multiplayer]

Recommended Posts

Macau, China. October. 2015.

Macau is the Las Vegas of the east. That’s what they say, anyway. It’s also a great place to hold business meetings for men who are located all over the world. Maeda thought so when he called the meeting. He had invited three other men to the Venetian-Macao. A luxurious Casino and Hotel designed to replicate the extravagance of living in Venice, Italy.

The four men were gathered in Maeda’s suit. He looked around at the hodge-podge group of men assembled. There was himself, of course. He was Yoshifusa Maeda. A legend in puroresu. He had been a Golden Canvas Crappling loyalist until they decided that puroresu was dead -- or should die -- and joined the Modern Japan Movement. It spit on his legacy. The legacy of his fellow warriors who had given their bodies to honor the sport of puroresu. He was not willing to let his own sacrifices die in vain. So he had started Black Canvas Grappling. Had poured his own money into keeping pure puroresu alive.

There was “Pistol” Pete Hall. His good friend. He had done wars with Pete. Pete had been the top gaijin in all of Japan. Pete had come with him to Black Canvas Grappling. Had given his own body and reputation to get BCG started. To put them on the map. Now Pete was ready to open up his own shop. Wrestling Premier League in the United States. Dedicated to big, burly wrestlers doing combat. Pete had a great mind for wrestling. He understood what needed to happen. He also understood the sacrifices that needed to be made -- because he had given his body to the same cause.

There was the man professional known as British Samurai. Robert Brown. The Englishman who had fought the sports entertainment hell that Jeff Nova brought to England. Samurai had run Ring of Fire when Geordie Jimmy Morris had left for Japan. Samurai had wanted to keep pure wrestling alive in his home country. He had mixed classic British wrestling with puroresu, but he couldn’t compete with the funds of Jeff Nova. Had to sell. It was a travesty of justice. Fortunately, the Ring of Fire Dojo had been profitable for Brown. He had found some silent partners to financially back a new venture. Burning Spirit Professional Wrestling. It would inherit the legacy of Ring of Fire. It would bring wrestling as it was meant to be back to England.

The fourth man was the Original Lone Rider. The Australian of the group. With his gravelly voice and a face that made him seem much more sour than he actually was. He had helped build the Australian scene. Had tried to build it around tough men waging war. And then that television company with their deep pockets decided that sports entertainment -- the devil’s own paradise -- needed to come to the Southern Hemisphere. He was embarrassed by RAW Attitude. By the Australian “Sports” Network that would demean professional wrestling so much. The Lone Rider had always been financially prudent and had made the decision to start the Outback Fighting League -- to be the Australian respite for wrestlers who wanted to be wrestlers. A safe haven for what he loved.

They came together in Macau to make a decision. To launch the Global Wrestling Council. They would be a consortium. Share profits to mitigate losses. It wouldn’t make any of them rich, but it should keep any of them from going broke. They would trade talent -- expose talent to new audiences and help each other restock when the larger companies came calling. They would have one World’s Championship for singles. One World’s Championship for Tag Teams. They would not infringe on each other’s territory -- but each had more than enough territory to run and to build. They would not hire anyone below Lightweight. No flippy-floppers. No luchadors. No spot monkeys. They wanted wrestlers. Guys who took it seriously. Men who hit hard. Who punished their opponents. Brawlers. Technicians. Fighters.

They had a motto. “The Global Wrestling Council: It’s wrestling, not entertainment.” They were not a soap opera. They were not sports entertainment, they were not acting and dancing. They would wrestle and be wrestling. They would be recognized as the safe haven for wrestlers who wanted to be wrestlers.

Yoshifusa Maeda looked around at the three men who had joined him in this city of glitz and glamor. He had chosen it on purpose. It was a city of pageantry. A city of entertainment. A city that was the antithesis of what they wanted to build. A shining example of when man took things further than they needed to be.

They were all joined by a common cause and a common mission. Hall, Brown, Rider -- they would spend the next few months getting ready to launch in January. Maeda would plan for the Heritage tour that was going to beginning soon. They shook hands. They were brothers in arms now. The war had begun.

<span style="font-size:14px;">Pistol Pete Hall sat in his study, whiskey in hand, eyes glued to the old box TV in the corner. What had once been top of the line, was now an old relic from an era all but forgotten...a lot like how he felt these days. His kid had offered to buy him a new one to replace that dinosaur but he couldn’t do it. He felt a connection to this old fashioned piece of machinery. Besides, it had a built in VCR and he needed that for his tapes. The tapes he had been watching for hours now at this point. Tapes of old school southern wrestling, a style that had long since died out in these parts. He needed to remember, to feel it again, so he could try and revive it. </span></p><p><span style="font-size:14px;">

Pete wondered if he was making a mistake, he knew this stiff hard hitting style would be big business in the UK and Australia. Hell, it had been for years in Japan. But...was it too far gone to be appreciated in his gold stomping grounds? A style he’d grown up watching, built his early career on and then took to Japan to make him a star. The Mid South used to be a hot bed for southern wrestling but nothin had grown there it quite some time. Did the fans even really remember? Would they even care? Pete believed in the GWC and its cause. That’s why he agreed to be a part of this...what he didn’t believe in was himself. Having a failing leg of the GWC early on would probably spell the end for the alliance. They’d be a joke after that. Pete didn’t wanna be the guy who killed a good concept right outta the gate. He poured another glass. He sank a lot of money into Wrestling Premier league, consulted with the best minds in the business and hired a talented cast of young bucks with some tried and true veterans. This had to work. People were counting on him god damnit! He was gonna throw everything he had, heart and soul into WPL and the GWC. He was goin for broke.</span></p>

Wrestling Premier League Presents: The Last Hard Men!

27 January 2016

We are live at the West Texas Coliseum for Wrestling Premier League’s inaugural event. The rowdy mid south fans are packed in and ready for a night that promises to reignite the spark of southern style wrestling here in West Texas.

Tournament to Crown the First United States Heavyweight Champion

OPENING ROUND

Standard Singles 10 min Time Limit

”The Rising Storm” Rayne Man vs “The Hunter” Brady Prince

Rayne Man is out first, he plays to the crowd and high fives his fans on his way to the ring. The smart fans in the arena remember him from his time as an SWF enhancement talent but not much else. His opponent, Brady Prince is out next and looks to be all business. An SCCW mainstay in his youth, this Prince would be completely unrecognizable to his younger self. Referee Alvin Lavin explains the rules to the two men and has them shake hands. Prince finishes their exchange with a hard shove to Rayne Man. The Match is on. The two men trade arm drags and slams as they run the ropes and chain wrestle. Some solid back and forth here but Rayne Man drops Prince at 8:54 with a Rayne Drop!

Winner: Rayne Man

Rating: D-

“Southern Justice” Jack Griffin vs “Dirty Dog” Deuce Deadline

The wily veteran, Jack Griffin makes his way to the ring, snubbing fans who remember him from his work in SCCW and DAVE and threatening a few that dare to touch him. Out next is his enthusiastic young opponent, Deuce Deadline. Deuce is a big, sturdy kid who was trained by Rip Chord. Referee Lavin checks the grapplers for foreign objects and removes a small steel pipe from Griffin’s boot. Griffin acts shocked that it was there but kicks the ground and cussed as Lavin turned around to hand it away. Deadline and Griffin lock up and the bigger Deadline forces Griffin back into a corner. Griffin raises his hands and hooks a leg through the ropes as the referee comes in to separate the two. While the referee is backing off Deadline, Griffin rushes his bigger opponent with a thumb to the eye that the referee missed. While Deadline uses his size to push Griffin around, Southern Justice uses his cunning and experience to outmatch the rookie and picks up the win following a Jack in the Box at 9:48

Winner: Jack Griffin

Rating: D-

Joe “The Grand” Canyon vs “The Villain” Ox Mastadon

The plucky Joe Canyon is out first. Trained by Shawn Gonzalez, Canyon is a well rounded young competitor that, after spending some time in Puerto Rico, is here to prove he is anything but “regular”. As he bounces to the ring, his good looks and charm get some admiration from the women in attendance. Ox Mastadon is out next. A protege of the legendary Dread, The Villain earns his moniker as he marches to the ring. He growls at a family in the front row and threatens fans. One front row fan has a “Rayne Man” sign that Mastadon snatches from him and tears it to pieces. The size difference here is staggering but Canyon remains stoic. As the referee calls the the bell Canyon rushes Mastadon and begins to use his speed to chop away at his opponents legs. This strategy seems effective until Ox catches him with a boot. Now able to get his hands on Canyon, the power moves break the youngster down. The Ten Ton Splash crushes Canyon at 7:36

Winner: Ox Mastadon

Rating: E+

”The Georgia Bulldog” Riley McManus vs Sergeant Bubba Lee West

McManus is out first, a good ol’ boy and another former Mid Atlantic Wrestler from the Rip Chord era, McManus does very well with the Texas crowd. McManus looks like the captain of the football team, a guy you’d want to date your daughter with a haircut you could set your watch to. His opponent is the opposite. Haggard and gritty, West is legitimately a former US Army Ranger, with multiple tours of the Middle East and a serious mean streak. He doesn’t waste time on the referees pleasantries much to Alvin Lavin’s chagrin. Instead West goes straight for McManus. Clearly trying to inflict as much Main as possible, West uses his size advantage to keep McManus down. West fails to pay attention to the clock however and at 9 minutes the sense of urgency sets in. But McManus refuses to go down for the pin and frustration gets the better of West allowing McManus to roll West up for the win at 9:59

Winner: Riley McManus

Rating: D-

SEMI FINALS

Standard Singles

kURuRrj.jpgfC2vxOA.png5okzfl1.jpg

”The Rising Storm” Rayne Man vs “Southern Justice” Jack Griffin

Rayne Man makes his second appearance for the night to a much better reaction from the crowd. Griffin comes out next for this semi finals match. The crowd boos Griffin for his earlier treatment of Deuce Deadline. In the center of the ring after the referee checks each opponent and goes over the rules he tries to get the men to shake hands. Griffin extends his hand far too eagerly but Rayne Man is no fool and he slaps away Griffin’s hand, wanting no part of whatever Jack had planned. Alvin Lavin just throws his hands up in frustration and calls for the bell. The two men circle each other a bit and a small grappling exchange to feel each other out. Griffin pulls out a few tricks but Rayne Man isn’t a rookie like Deadline and recovers from Griffins underhanded tactics. Rayne lands The Rayne Drop on Griffin at 12:29 for the win.

Winner: Rayne Man

Rating: D

”The Villain” Ox Mastodon vs “Georgia Bulldog” Riley McManus

Mastadon is out first to a chorus of boos. He doesn’t seem to mind the hate but rather thrive on it. McManus is out next and that changes the tune of the crowd. Many didn’t think he would make it to this match but he had shocked the crowd earlier with his victory over SGT West. Once again the size difference is staggeringly in the favor of Ox Mastadon but if Riley McManus is worried, he’s certainly doing a good job of hiding it. As referee Alvin Lavin calls for the bell, McManus begins to clap and get the audience engaged. This seems to enrage Mastadon who charges McManus as a Bulldog chant takes over the audience. McManus ducks under Mastadon who hits the corner hard and McManus fires up with a drop kick. The momentum doesn’t last as Mastadon catches McManus with a fall away slam followed by a clothesline. Despite the bone crunching manuevers that Mastadon hits McManus with he refuses to stay down, frustrating the Villain. Unfortunately this Cinderella story has to end as Mastadon puts McManus away with the Ten Ton Splash at 11:37.

The Adams Brothers vs Brutal Attack vs Lion Heart and Jerry Martin vs The New Lords of War w/Warlord Agony

W1PnYyP.jpgW1PnYyP.jpg

The Adams Brothers are out first. Their blonde hair, blue eyed appearance plus their American themed ring gear make them obvious fan favorites for the crowd. They seem to be in each others way though while entering and clumsily roll into the ring. Brutal Attack follows in stark contrast to the Adams Brothers. Whisky Jack holds a bottle of liquor in his fist and a cigarette in his mouth that he removes to swig from his bottle before smashing it on the entrance ramp. Killer Clarkson is less thematic about his entrance and simply walks to the ring behind Jack. Lion Heart and Jerry Martin enter together next, full of energy. The two men run to the ring and both flip over the top rope to excite the fans. Finally the Lords of War theme plays in the arena. Warlord Agony enters to huge crowd support. He is followed by two big bald men dressed in full Lords of War garb. They seem to be trying too hard to be the Lords of War instead of being “New” and it puts off the fans. One man from each team starts the match. Some decent tag action but only the New Lords of War have any tag experience with the Adams Brothers seemingly struggling to get their timing down. Jerry Martin is pinned by Killer Clarkson eliminating their team. Clarkson then eats the pin from Ken Adams leaving just the Adams Brothers and the New Lords of War with Warlord Agony shouting instructions from ringside. Warlord Torment picks up the win by pinning Jay Adams. The New Lords of War win the Inited States Tag Team Championships.

”The Villain” Ox Mastodon d. “The Rising Storm” Rayne Man

fUX8Haq.jpg

As Mastadon makes his way to the ring, the crowd is now at a boiling point of heat for the big man. If he wins tonight they might just lose it. Rayne Man enters next and the crowd chants for him. They want to see him stop the Monster in his tracks and keep the United States title from his villainous clutches. Referee Alvin Lavin checks both men and then holds the the title up in the center of the ring before handing it off the the bell keeper. With the title on the line, the bell is rung and the match begins. These two hold nothing back. Mastadon reaches new levels of cruelty as he punishes Rayne Man. The Rising Storm fights back but Mastadon’s size and strength overwhelm him. Despite mounting an offense on a few occasions, the Storm is eventually quieted as Ox Mastadon lands the Ten Ton Splash on Rayne Man to pick up the victory at 13:01

Fans were less than impressed with the production quality and some of the outdated equipment used for tonight’s show. A few fans referred to the show as small-time and dated. Guessing they won’t be back. Perhaps we should invest a little more money in the atmosphere before our next event.

Oh it felt good to finally sit in my favorite rocker with a cigar in one hand and a glass of whiskey in the other. I felt in over my head, I wasn’t sure what I was doing. I really wanted to retire quietly and watch my son hopefully surpass me and actually become a somebody. I may have been a local legend, but I wanted to hang my boots up for good. Yoshifusa Maeda approached me of all people to start up a promotion in Australia, I originally refused, but after watching “wrestling” and what RAW was doing to wrestling in Australia it infuriated me. Then you have DIW making a mockery of my hometown, and even APW the first culprit of ruining what made wrestling great, I knew I had to do something. I called back Yoshifusa and agreed to start Outback Fight League. And after the first month, I am worried I am in over my head. My guys did their best, but our production values were poor compared to the other promotions. The crowd seemed into the matches and our workers aren’t too bad, but if we wanted to expand we need better workers and better shows. I think with the help of GWC we could actually put Australia on the map for great straight up shoot wrestling. </p><p>

<p>The first sip of his favourite dark stout went down the throat of Robert Brown, washing down all the stress and cottonmouth of re-living a "first show". The local pub had little to boast about besides decent beer and being located just across the Norman Blue Athletic Center in Birmingham. For him, it was enough.</p><p> </p><p>

His mind raced back to his own early days as a competitor, a young man from the Midlands with an unhealthy obsession of martial arts and technical grappling. MMA was non-existent at the time, so his mind was blown when he discovered the splendor of puroresu; pro wrestling, but taken seriously, presented as a sport and focusing on the unyielding warrior spirit of those between the ropes. He consumed everything he could find on the subject, from wrestling magazines to old VCR tapes of Master Kitozon laying the foundation of what would become Burning Hammer of the Wrestling Gods. It was then he came up with the character of the British Samurai. He and his best friend Razor Valentine got into the business together with hopes of eventually getting a call from Japan. Ring of Fire was his hometown promotion, so he underwent the rigorous training the Turnbuckle Dojo (as it was called at the time) put its prospects through and soon enough, made his debut against Valentine.</p><p> </p><p>

Things were going swell, until Geordie Jimmy Morris decided to try his own luck in Japan first. Supposedly it was only going to be for one tour, so of course Samurai agreed to keep the promotion running until he'd get back. Thing is, Morris never did. Japan ate him up and spat him out. By the time Morris accepted defeat and returned back to England, he was a bent, bitter, broken and out of shape man well past his prime. Meanwhile, Ring of Fire had prospered under Samurai. That is, until Jeff Nova showed up.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="CWFxn1X.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/CWFxn1X.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Nova stood for everything Samurai had since grown to hate. A big washed up strongman with fame and money but no love or knowledge for the business he was looking to make the jump to. Up to that time, no one had paid much attention to 21CW's attempt to import "sports entertainment". Nova did, because he knew it was the only place he could make it. The only place that put showmanship above wrestling. So he pulled them out of debt, bought out the company and poured his own resources, fame and star power in it. The media ate it up, so of course he was offered a TV deal. The clock had begun ticking for everyone else. The lure of big money and nation-wide exposure was too good to resist. Alongside "sports entertainment" Nova also brought with him the Eisen business sense as he cherry-picked everyone else's top talent, bled them dry and then bought them out to establish his absolute monopoly.</p><p> </p><p>

For British Samurai, it was all a matter of bad timing. He had the talent, the fanbase and the booking to grow; Nova just showed up at a time where the deck was stacked in his favour, so of course he made the best of it. Ever since he sold the promotion and limited himself to running the old dojo, now renamed into "Ring of Fire Dojo" in memoriam, he carried with him this feeling. Not bitterness or hate, but rather... unfullfillment. So when Maeda's offer coincided with his investors pitching the idea of Burning Spirit, he took it as a sign. His chance at redemption.</p><p> </p><p>

"Hmm... Not bad for a second show title" he thought as he finished up his beer.</p>

The Polish had a saying "God grant me a good sword and no use for it." I did not believe in this saying. I believed that a good sword should be used -- that a man was measured by his willingness to cut enemies down. I believed in living my life by eight rules. The Bushido Code. A code that had governed warriors for centuries.</p><p> </p><p>

I believed in <strong>rectitude</strong>. "Rectitude is one’s power to decide upon a course of conduct in accordance with reason, without wavering; to die when to die is right, to strike when to strike is right" I acted with reason. I was not a brash man. I was not prone to anger or outrage or to act without thinking. </p><p> </p><p>

I believed in <strong>courage</strong>. In doing what was right even when it was hard. I split from GCG. I split from my home because I knew it to be right even though it was hard.</p><p> </p><p>

I believed in <strong>mercy</strong>, even though it challenged me. </p><p> </p><p>

I believed in being <strong>polite</strong>. In respecting other people's feelings. In trying to understand them.</p><p> </p><p>

I believed in being <strong>honest and sincere</strong>. I believed in living not for the luxuries of life, but to live a life I could be proud of.</p><p> </p><p>

I believed in<strong> honor</strong>. In conducting myself with dignity. In bearing the unbearable.</p><p> </p><p>

I believed in <strong>loyalty</strong>. In staying true. In honoring your commitments. In honoring the people who trusted you. I was loyal to the Golden Lion. For almost forty years. For thirty-two years I wrestled for them. For five more I worked in their office. I was a loyal soldier. Until they dishonored me. Until they dishonored themselves. </p><p> </p><p>

I believed in character and self-control. Something The Golden Lion lacked. They had no character. They wanted to be modern They appointed that ******* Kudo to run their company. A pitiful excuse for something I once believed in.</p><p> </p><p>

I was at war. There is an American movie about men in a version of the Yakuza talk about having a wartime consigliere. A wartime adviser. A man you trusted to help guide you. Yoshizawa was my consigliere. He was helping me navigate this war.</p><p> </p><p>

It was a war with causalities. Sojuro Sen. Tanyu Toshusai. They had revealed their character -- or lack there of -- when they joined the Golden Lion. Casualties of a war I was determined to win. My life was this business. I had eschewed romantic relationships for this business. Never married. Never had kids. I was dedicated. Dedicated to this.</p><p> </p><p>

I took a drink from my cup of tea. A slow drink. My dark eyes looked out of the window of my apartment onto the crowded city streets. The first month of the Global Wrestling Council had been successful. I had found good allies in my war. Robert. Pete. The crazy Australian. Men I could count on. Generals in their own right, fighting their own wars.</p><p> </p><p>

I wanted our way of life to succeed -- but I wanted to skin the Golden Lion and hang its pelt in my office. They would help me win this war -- and I would help them win theirs. The Jeff Novas. The Eisens and Packers. The Australian Television market. They would bow to us at the end. I would give my last breath to make sure of it.</p><p> </p><p>

If Betrand Russel was right and war didn't decide who was right, only who was left, the Black Lion would survive. We would be right by virtue of surviving the war.</p>

It's awesome to see BSPW materialize into something real. When I made those logos and belts I had no idea what to do with them I just thought the logo looked cool. I like the idea of them based in the UK vs just becoming another run of the mill puro fed in Japan.

Letting out a sigh, I laid my head on my arms at my desk in my office. Ever since deciding to start up OFL, I decided that I needed an office space so I converted a “third bedroom” that was supposed to be a guest room, but was more of a storage room into my new office. All furnished by hand me down and free items from the local thrift store. </p><p> </p><p>

I was only two shows in and I had already panicked and flipped the switch on what I was doing. I really wanted to do this whole point system, but the internet dirt sheets were tearing me apart for not having a champion and not advertising a champion. So instead of staying true to my plan I caved. Not only did I cave, I went out and fumbled my promo in front of the whole audience. I’m really not sure this whole running a promotion thing is for me. I mean I can book a show, but the added pressure of being the owner who signs all the checks, books the venues, and does all the paperwork, it’s just too much. And to boot, I am a nobody compared to the other owners in the GWC, they are all accomplished workers and their companies seem to have identities. What’s OFL’s identity? We punch eat other a lot? Maybe I should just bow out not before I embarrass myself even more…. I need to email Maeda. No scratch that… Maybe Samurai, or Pistol Pete… I don’t know what I am going to do. </p><p> </p><p>

Before I could continue to think I got a text from my son…</p><p>

“Dad, I got a few cool ideas for OFL that may help us out, can we talk?” </p><p> </p><p>

Why the hell not… Let’s see what the kid has to say.</p><p>

</p></div><p></p><p></p>
