Briskout
WCW Nitro #1 Live from the Mall of America, this is NITRO! The show opens up with fireworks and Tony Schiavone absolutely going nuts. It's the first Nitro, they're in a mall. It's Tony, Mongo McMichael and Dusty Rhodes doing some matches, and they toss it over to Eric Bischoff, Mike Tenay and Bobby Heenan for some other matches. Weird set up, but okay. Match one sees Brian Pillman pins Jushin Thunder Liger in a 16 minute match (3.5 stars). I'll talk a little more about this match in my closing summary, this is a great set up for Pillman as a bonifide star without Austin. Liger is a star in Japan and this might be a one night only deal, but it works well here. After this, we get a Sting interview with Mean Gene where he informs the crowd that tonight he'll be in action defending the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship agianst his nemesis Ric Flair. While this may be the first Nitro, the result will be the same: Showtime! Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff are in front of, and I kid you not, a Hulk Hogan themed Italian restuarant. Yeah... Not much else to say there. Hogan promises that Pastamania is taking over and tonight in the squared circle, Pastamania is running wild on Big Bubba Rogers. The earlier mentioned Sting-Flair match is up next. This one isn't exactly a classic, but the classic matchup on TNT will certainly draw eyes. Sting manages to win and retain when Flair's longtime ally Arn Anderson interferes, which Nick Patrick catches disqualifying Flair. It's unfair to Flair, Heenan shouts, but it's the final result. The post-match sees Flair and Anderson absolutely upset at each other as Sting holds the US belt up high. Scott "Flash" Norton makes his debut next. Mike Tenay hypes Norton as a huge foreign star in Japan looking to return home and make an impact in WCW. Norton screams into the microphone, which is both amusing and incoherent, in which he makes an open challenge for Nitro next week: which leads to the Macho Man coming out and telling Norton he's got a deal! Some hype time: Sabu is coming to WCW! And the stars of WCW are still on the Superstation. This Saturday Night catch Earl Robert Eaton take on Jushin Thunder Liger and the WCW Tag Team Championships will be defendes as Col. Parker's boys Bunkhouse Buck & Dick Slater defend them against the American Males! One more hype video: Mr. Wallstreet is returning back to WCW soon! Eric Bischoff reminds us we're live and not to change the channel as the main event is up next: Hogan - Rogers! Hulk Hogan makes easy work in a classic Hogan versus heel TV match, pinning Rogers after the leg drop. This match does what it needs to do. Puts Hogan over strong. But this wasn't the big news of the match. After the match, the Dungeon of Doom came out and began to put the boots to Hogan! The Giant, The Shark, Sullivan, Rogers and Meng are all beating Hogan down when suddenly Lex Luger appears! He helps Hogan clear the ring. However, that help is short lived as Hogan believes Luger attacked him as well! Sting and Savage hit the ring to stop the two from brawling but it's clear tensions are high! Gene Okerlund manages to get into the ring and states he has no clue until Hogan asks "why are you in my backyard?" Luger promotes Hogan as the number one wrestler in the world, the only world champion. "I'm here to take that belt!" We get confirmation that this is the main event next week as Nitro goes off the air! The Good: Brian Pillman / Liger. Notice it was the only match with a rating. The other two matches were full of shenanigans. Sting/Flair I just expect more out of. Pillman / Luger are showing that the rumored "jr heavyweight" division is not only possible, but plausible. They kept the crowd engaged. Lex Luger. This is a huge grab by WCW! This is a huge surprise and the long talked about Luger-Hogan match happening could be big for WCW. The Bad: Hogan. The guy needs to retire. Scott Norton. The guy is good in the ring but he either needs to be reigned in or properly trained. The Ugly: Mongo McMichael. He dragged down the Sting/Flair match more than it was already dragged down. Hyping WCW Saturday Night with a bum card. Main Event Tim Horner d. Terry Richards Lt. James Earl Wright d.
