Memoirs of a Wrestling fan (CVERSE)

This is the memoir of a 30-year wrestling obsession. You maybe wondering why only 30 years! Well unlike most wrestling fans I wasn’t a fan as a child indeed I was oblivious to it beyond the abstract; i.e. its existence.

It was only aged 40 in 2016 when one of my children got into supporting the local product and to show fatherly support I went along to, well as teenagers often do, they fell out of interest a couple of years later but for me a new passion was ignited. Unable to get enough I devoured everything I could get my hands on, DVD’s, old VHS, magazines, internet streams literally everything.

Whilst I began with the British scene as my focus and 21CW has been a personal favourite of mine for the majority of this past 30 years I have spread myself thin keeping an eye on wrestling all over the world.

So why now? Well after 30 years and aged 70 I felt it was a case of now or never, retirement has brought me the time to devote and as I become less able or willing to travel far and wide it seemed a natural progression to capture my thoughts and look back over the odds and sods I have accumulated in the last 3 decades.

As those of you reading this will know the scene today is quite different to that found back in 2016. 21CW reigns supreme as the first and only truly global company. The powerhouse that is SOTBPW had its years of sunshine and may well recapture past glory days in the years to come.

TCW and SWF arguably both lost their long running war and only time will tell if they can keep enough momentum to fend off the popular giants elsewhere.

USPW as ever still challenging at the top of the field, their penchant for aging main eventer's and milking popularity for all its worth shows no sign of ending anytime soon.

CZCW won the undercard South west war simply by outlasting the competition but now have TCW as a firm comparator.

The scandals over the years from the recent Andre Jones financial scam to Nicky Champion and his comments on the disabled tainting his legacy in retirement, to the Rick Law homophobic and Jack Bruce racist recordings. Not to mention the Jeff Nova scandal when he was recorded dressing up as a **** for fancy dress and someone posted a recording of him making the infamous salute at a dinner, even in bad jest how he rode that out without killing all his companies momentum I will never know but as we can see it didn’t end up hurting 21CW in the long-term. And how could I forget Lucy Stone-McFly being jailed for a year for tax evasion and then coming back to have a stellar career in the business.

Then there are the deaths, now this business is known as one that many fail to live long lives from but losing Remo Richardson at 39 still threatens to tear me up more than 20 years on. Not to mention Phil Vibert at 51 after launching his 3rd company and second since DAVE. One of my favourites from 21CW Sebastian Koller dead at 50 in a golfing accident.

I mean the list is endless:

Jack Bruce 68

Jonathan Faust 56

Mexican Ghoul 50

Sam Strong 69

Steve DeColt 68

Wolf Hawkins 53

Valiant 64

Kelly Martin 58

Jeff Nova 70

Eddie Peak 66

Bubba Joe 43

Christian Faith 67

Cuervo 68

Foxxy LaRue 53

Emily McQueen 67

James Justice 68

Mitch Ness 67 (PSW founder)

Ricky Dale Johnson 69

Rip Chord 73

And Omer Vanhorn at 42 a Hall of immortal’s inductee in 2039 and 21CW legend taken far to early

Just to name a few of the major stars across the globe to depart during this time.

I will be posting this on my blog here as it comes back to me so don't expect any order as it will depend how I find things, but should you stumble upon this feel free to drop me a line and I will be happy to look for anything or anyone I have not covered here. Keep watching and believing wrestling fans.

Reggie

GSW: Grimm SoCal Wrestling

GSW

What could have been, when you see what IPW went on to achieve before its own ending we really hoped to see more from the Warehouse. Unfortunately a combination of financial woes and SWF predatory tactics saw them buy out Brother Grimm in December 2016 and disband the burgeoning company.

Brother Grimm would hang around the Indy scene until 2041 when he officially retired but would never again show up apart from inducting himself into the GSW hall of fame in 2018... and IPW throwing him a nostalgia bone in their own HOF in 2020. He is currently 69

In total 59 shows were put on largely due to their local weekly TV deal on SoCal PBS MAture alongside IPW, we all hoped this would lead to a weekly war on TV on the West Coast only for SWF to end all hopes just as things were picking up.

The final Show was GSW Game of Death 2016 and took place at the Grissom Auditorium in front of a sold out 2,000 rowdy fans.

The show its self scored a C 59 from the rating pundits.

The Main event saw Jason Roy and Cali Slick defeat Rich and Famous (Jake Idol and Jackpot Jordan), this scored a B- 75 and given where we know Jason Roy would go in his career one can only imagine what he could have done for GSW had they remained open longer.

Fro Sure would retain his West Coast title against Mobstar, Masked Stranger and Pierrot. C 61

The American title held by Jake Idol was not defended here due to his main event match.

Their top event of all time was GSW Gangsta's Paradise 2016 (November) C 62

Their top match was Jake Idol defeating Jason Roy at that same show, B 79

They achieved 7 sold out 2,000 houses at their last 7 monthly events. And were getting close on their TV

Their ending popularity was

South West 40

Mid South 16

North West 11

Mid West & South East 6

Northern Mexico 11

West Central Mexico 7

Notable mentions

Big Magic would also drift away before retiring in 2038 his is currently 73

Boneyard would never wrestle again and retired in 2028 he passed aged 59 in 2041

Devyn Retribution would never work outside the indies and would retire in 2039 before opening a Dojo (0 grads so far) he is currently 56

Hard-1 retired in 2037 and is 68

Kandii is 54 but whilst not retired has never worked a named gig since. She broke up with Gravedigga in 2023

Jack Bruce was well towards the latter stage of his in ring career in 2016 at SWF so when in 2019 he became embroiled in a scandal having been caught on camera making racist comments it was an easy call for SWF to cut him lose.

He would retire from in ring competition shortly thereafter in 2019.

As soon as the scandal had blown over a year or so later in 2020 USPW eagerly signed Bruce up for a Manager role.

He was inducted into the USPW HOF in 2029 to follow his SWF induction in Sep 2019 (despite having just been released by them..) He was also inducted into the Hall of immortals in 2019. It is believed both of these came despite the scandal due to his retirement from in ring competition.

A graduate of the Titan Factory he would work for Dredd as part of the team Dem Boys but would not be signed to work for the Main roster at the Factory.

He would pass away aged only 43 in 2040

He would sign with PWC in 2017 before scoring a development deal with RIPW in 2018. He would be called up to the main SWF roster in 2023 but judged surplus to requirements and released in 2024.

He would work on a PPA basis for RCW and then CGC from 2025 before signing a written deal with NOTBPW in Sept 2025. 3 years later he would sign with USPW 2028 where he would remain until joining SOTBPW in 2036 only to return to USPW in 2038 showing just how valuable he had become.

He would work 5 listed indy shows in 2016/17 prior to joining PWC

MAW: Mid Atlantic Wrestling

MAW: Mid Atlantic Wrestling

<img alt="ed3nW4J.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/ed3nW4J.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

MAW, where to begin with this cult fan favourite promotion. Their run lasted from its founding by legend Rip chord in 2005 and would run until being bought out and disbanded by the ruthless SWF in 2030.

Their end popularity

Mid Atlantic 38

South East 15

Great lakes 15

Tri State 15

Mid south, Mid West and New England all 6

They would achieve 29 shows that sold out their full 2,000 ticket allocations.

The highest rated match occurred in Sept 2029 at MAW The Clash when Thomas Youngblood defeated Bobby Ray. B+ 83

It is worth nothing that their top three matches of all time had the exact same line up and out come.

The best rated event came back in 2021 at MAW Old School Rules, C 62

MAW would hit Regional a number of times but always seemed to fall back to Small. 2020, 2023, 2024 (lasted 2 weeks), 2024, 2025, 2026 (Twice)

To say they bounced up and down without hitting the key stride would be fair.

Long time owner Sam Keith retired and stepped down in 2026 and was replaced by fellow legend Ricky Dale Johnson, following the sale of MAW Ricky would become head booker of CWWF in 2031 before handing up his spurs one last time in 2035. It is worth noting that the SWF purchase of MAW did not include the Mid Atlantic Boot Camp which Ricky would remain head trainer of until his retirement here in 2035, the Camp continues until this day with William Hayes as their current head trainer. Since its opening in 2005 84 workers have graduated with honors.

Sam would pass away only 2 years later in 2028 aged 67

Ricky Dale Johnson would himself pass away in 2039 aged 69

The final and 172nd show put on by MAW came in April 2030 at the Ohio Jewish Center in the Great Lakes, it was a show with a sold out 300 in attendance MAW Americana would rate only a E+ 34

Randy Jenkins defeated Matt Nevada in the main event, E+ 35

The penultimate match on the card was much better with Jules Night defeating Thomas Youngblood to retain the COTT World heavyweight title, B- 74

The writing had been on the wall for months and the quality of show and fans in attendance had dropped off massively leaving the door open for SWF to hammer the final nail in the coffin of MAW, arguably they were headed for bankruptcy so in away this enabled fans to claim the high ground by blaming SWF.

The final MAW Tag champions were Big Ben and Gray who defeated Matt Nevada & Jim Rock at MAW Super Showdown the month before, C- 56

Peter Windham was the final Mid Atlantic Champion

Lonniw Muscles was the final Mid Atlantic American Champion

The final Rip Chord invitational was XXV and came in January 2030 at the North Carolina Biker Museum in Mid Atlantic in front of a rowdy sold out 2,000 fans rated C- 55

Peter Windham would defeat Booby Ray for the Rip Chord invitational Challenge title in a great match, rated B- 73

Rip Chord himself passed away aged 73 in 2023 so never saw the end of his promotion.

MAW may have a spot in the hearts of many a wrestling fan but it is fair to say their crowning glory was never their own shows or achievements but rather the success those who passed through their doors went on to achieve in the business. Name me your 5 most influential workers between 2016-2030 and I bet most worked at MAW at some point on their way up, I mean just look at where some are now or went on to in their time.

CGC: Canadian Golden Combat

CGC: Canadian Golden Combat

<img alt="ZAAhkiZ.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/ZAAhkiZ.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Another scalp of SWF during their buyout phase was this Canadian legacy of the DeColt family. Taken over in January of 2026.

Some fans think the decision to drop long term Figurehead Jack DeColt in 2025 spelt the beginning of the end for CGC.

Their best recorded show came on Oct 2016, CGC Apocalypse rated a C+ 70

5,000 fans sold out the King Edward Multiplex in British Columbia doing a PPV buy rate of 0.05 (26,295)

The main event saw Jack DeColt retain his World title against Zeus Maximillion, C+ 68

The highest PPV buy rate was a 0.07 (36,078) recorded for CGC The DeColt WrestleFestival Day 2 in April 2020, C+ 67

This was a sold out 5,000 Wood Buffalo Arts Center in Alberta.

The Main event saw Thrill Seeker retain his CGC World title over Spencer Spade, C+ 67 Of course we know Spencer would go on to do big things in both TCW and USPW whilst for Thrill this was arguably the high point of his career.

They would achieve 3 sold out 10,000 attendances all in 2019 but would never recapture this high point in their latter years.

Their highest rated match came way back in May 2017 when Jack DeColt defeated Ryan Powell at CGC Title Bout Wrestling, B- 76

Many fans blame Ricky DeColt for leaving in 2017 to join USPW as from what he would go on to achieve he could well have proved a big enough draw to keep them going. However personally I believe without the publicity brought to him by USPW and their international reach at the time he would never have become as popular around the world as he is today.

George DeColt the famous head of the family passed away in 2021 aged 77 and never saw the end of his creation.

Whilst I will cover The man Dan DaLay in the future it is fair to say he never got over the end of CGC and would retire in Dec 2026, now aged 70 he has been enjoying his time away from the business since his official retirement in 2041 although he was never active outside of conventions and local Indy promotions after CGC.

RAW: Revolution Australian Wrestling

RAW: Revolution Australian Wrestling

<img alt="cUChpUU.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/cUChpUU.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

From its founding in 2009 there was always something about RAW that pulled in those around the world whose screens it crossed. In Australia it became a cultural force for over a decade until a collapse in the economy matched with a fall in the industry unexpectedly dropped them back to Cult size and the wage shock combined with a lack of willing lenders left them with no choice but to close their doors due to bankruptcy in August 2031.

Their end popularity of 78 across all of Australia sums up how influential they became on their home scene.

Their rise began with a short lived dip into National stacks back in 2019 only to drop back to Cult 2 months later. by Aug 2020 they were solidly established as a National phenomenon through until their collapse in June 2031 and closure that August.

The writing was on the wall when CEO Tristram Day was removed in April 2030 and long term fan favourite Swoop McCarthy took his place.

Unfortunately Swoop could not replicate his in ring success with business ability.

Long time booker Vincent Victory stepped down in 2026 to be replaced by Kerry Wayne through till their closure.

Their best show of all time was arguably the June 2029 episode of RAW Attitude! A 91

They achieved over 100 sold out houses of 15,000 during their run at the top

16 matches achieved the supreme rating of A* 100 but the fans choice is always Loxley Robbins defeating Swoop McCarthy on RAW Decimation in Oct 2019. Nearly 3 million tuned in to watch this on the A.S.N channel.

In all CGC put on 1,497 shows between Jan 2016 and their close.

Their final show was an episode of RAW Decimation in Aug 2031 at Dillards Arena in Western Australia in front of 14,127 fans and viewed by 3.3 million on TV.

The main event saw SubUrban Legend and Kerry Wayne defeat Croft and Snark to retain the Tag titles, A 94 which they held since march 2031 taking them from 3 time holders Montgomery Croft and Swoop McCarthy.

The final Quest champion was Kian Wayne who made 9 defenses winning it from Skyscraper a 6 time holder of the belt in Dec 2030

The final Television title holder was Swoop McCarthy on his 6th run with the belt having captured it in Sep 2030 from 4 time holder Loxley Robbins

For many it is one of the strange quirks of this industry that a company could beat the odds to reach such heights only to disappear so suddenly

The most popular worker in the world right now in 2046 as you all obviously know. Whilst the focus here is on the nostalgia of those from days gone by or no longer with us I feel I would be doing a disservice for those who follow should I not also touch upon those at the peak of the industry right now.

At 52 years of age Jack is no spring chicken and after 33 years as a pro he must be reaching the end of a very long in ring career.

Currently ranked at 10 in the Power 500 rankings he is undoubtedly the most recognizable worker in the world today.

Having signed a developmental deal with RIPW back in Dec of 2016 he would then be called up to SWF in July 2017 where he would have a solid run for a decade jumping over to USPW in August 2027 where he remains until this day.

The smart money says to expect him to be inducted into the Hall of immortals on the day he retires. I would be highly surprised if that was not a sure thing.

Despite his mass appeal he had never managed to top the Power 500 with his best rank coming in at 6th in both 2040 and 2041. Whilst time is not on his side one good year could see him achieve that milestone yet.
