WINNOW Proving Grounds 2016

Week 2, October 2016

Venue: Hall of Nagahama [Kinki, Japan]

In Attendance: 252

Commentators: Hiranuma Makoto, Yuko Okui

a9HagOj.jpgtQ8Sd3n.jpg

Hiranuma Makoto: Welcome fans of women's wrestling, Hiranuma Makoto here alongside Yuko Okui and this is WINNOW Proving Grounds 2016!

Yuko Okui: We're just one month away from the Joshi Royalty Summit and tonight will indeed be a proving ground for competitors looking to make it to WINNOW's biggest show of the year!

Hiranuma Makoto: Some big matches scheduled for tonight, including Joanne Rodriguez making her first defense of the WINNOW Rising Champion title against "Strong Style" Sato and our huge main event, the Hunter-Killers against the Missouri Bruisers for the WINNOW Duet titles!

QAaEoST.jpgDpTyyCL.jpg25UZG0h.pngzPaHPzb.jpgMeqzwhu.jpg

Team Endorphine vs Chitose Ariwara & Thea Davis

Big match for the young lioness Emiko Miyoshi as she got to wrestle two high caliber opponents, including the WINNOW Grand Champion Chitose Ariwara. Miyoshi showed plenty of fire in the ring and her amazing chemistry with veteran Jaguar Endo made this match way more competitive than it may have seemed on paper, but ultimately the odd but dangerous pairing of Ariwara and Davis came out on top as the arrogant gaijin scored the pin over the rookie.

Winners: Chitose Ariwara & Thea Davis

Finish: Flying Elbow Drop

WINNOW Rising Champion title match

NVsHmIw.jpg25UZG0h.png8sEkkAa.jpg

Joanne "J-Ro" Rodriguez © vs Eri "Strong Style" Sato

Early candidate for match of the night, this show stealing title clash encapsulated the very spirit of WINNOW as the two competitors wrestled each other in an exciting and fast paced match. This was a case of the hard hitting up and comer Sato trying to prove herself against the seasoned all-rounder veteran that is Rodriguez and indeed it was a match that felt like it could end either way. Sato's intensity had her in control for a good part of the match as she blended stiff strikes with hard hitting suplexes that showcased her technical skill, but Rodriguez eventually made her big comeback and used her athleticism to hit some big aerial moves before connecting with her J-Rocker finisher to win this hard fought contest and make her first title defense.

Winner: Joanne Rodriguez (Defenses: 1)

Finish: J-Rocker [Face Crusher] off the top rope

mwL0z0W.jpg

After match was over, Joanne Rodriguez walked over and offered her hand as a sign of respect and recognition to Sato for putting up a great fight. Hesitant at first, Sato eventually shook J-Ro's hand and the two competitors stood in the ring as fans cheered them both for their efforts.

Romi Yamato & Ginko Kuroda vs Rei Chikanatsu & Sakura Sada

Romi Yamato continued her string of excellent in-ring performances, this time alongside former WINNOW Rising Champion Ginko Kuroda. Their opponents were the reigning WINNOW Pure Heart champion Rei Chikanatsu and one third of the former GDR Trios champions in Sakura Sada. Though Yamato was by far the best wrestler out of these four, her timing with Kuroda was all over the place and this hindered them both more than once, allowing the high flying pairing of Chikanatsu and Sada to take control of the match. The big finish saw Sada climb up to the top for her finisher, only for Kuroda to come alive and hop on the second rope to catch her and deliver a devastating Dragon Suplex off the top for the pin.

Winners: Romi Yamato & Ginko Kuroda

Finish: Dragon Suplex

WINNOW Duet titles match

vhgBwyi.jpgGtkXUah.jpg25UZG0h.png0zz5IM2.jpgHswIKR1.jpg

Hunter-Killers © vs The Missouri Bruisers

A highly anticipated bout between two established tag teams with very different styles, the main event was a real slow burner of a match that allowed all four wrestlers to shine as it built up to the big finish. Connie Morris looked a lot more comfortable teaming up with her long time partner in Gorgon as opposed to her former partner (and WINNOW Duet co-champion) Deborah Young, their classic big bruiser team bringing the big slams and hard hits that made life difficult for the defending champions. Dragon Assassin's precise martial arts kicks were well placed, but lacked the power in comparison to do as much damage as the gaijin challengers were able to do with a single hit. Assassin really took a beating for more than six minutes, but despite the Missouri Bruisers' best effors, she still kicked out of pin attempts and eventually managed to hit a big legsweep/moonsault combo on Morris that had them both reeling on the mat. The dramatic stalemate was eventually broken up by double tags and Huntress Makiko came in to dodge a couple of wild lariats from Gorgon before taking her on a ride with a series of suplexes. Though smaller, Makiko had the technical prowess to use leverage in her favor and throw the larger Gorgon around but she lacked the power to keep her down in the subsequent pin attempt. Dazed, Gorgon tagged in her partner and Morris entered the ring with a headfull of steam until Makiko shut her down with a Makiko Clutch. Though she didn't tap, Morris was reeling and after Makiko spiked her with a DDT, the cover was made and Dragon Assassin walked the rope to cross the ring and catch Gorgon with a spectacular flying head kick that prevented her from breaking up the cover.

Winners: Hunter-Killers (Defenses: 1)

Finish: Spike DDT

pyf9Pt4.jpg

vhgBwyi.jpgGtkXUah.jpg

After their victory, Hunter-Killers got on the mic for the show wrap-up promo, in which they bragged about themselves and the big bad bruiser challenger duo they defeated, calling themselves the undisputed top of the WINNOW Tag Team division. They then riled up the fans to give a big cheer for everyone who gave their everything in the ring, ending the night on a high note.

Maria "Miss Mexico" Hernandez sat behind her desk in her garage. It was November and the garage door was open to let the fresh air in. It was cool without being cold. The benefit of being this far south -- it never really got cold per say. There was a stack of papers on her desk. Papers she was solely responsible for. Luchadora Original, her partner in the whole operation, was busy training. Hopefully, she would have someone for the main roster soon, someone Hernadez could push.

It had been a tough few months. Mystery Pink had quit -- her friend Crusher was using her in Japan, but Mystery wanted nothing to do with GDR at the present moment. Concepcion Gomez had to be released because of her attitude. Same with Purple Viper. Electric Dreamer broke her neck and was out until December of 2017 -- and who knows if she'll be the same dynamic performer. Now Pinky Perez had put in her notice and would be leaving.

Maria ran her fingers through her red hair. Morale wasn't great in the GDR locker room. It was getting better as negative mindsets left. Maria had put out some phone calls for some replacement talents. She had called Catherine and Crusher to see if they minded if she brought in Joanne for a little while. She called Farrah and asked about bringing in Pamela, Juana, Houston, and Teresa. She also had a call into Japan for a woman who was tough as nails and while not a luchadora would be a great locker-room leader.

Right now, that's what Maria needed. Locker room leaders. People to be positive impacts on the roster and help morale raise. She was also hoping that with the arrival of Tex-Mex as a babyface tag team and Juana and Pamela that she'd be able to really balance things out. Pamela was going to come back in as a babyface and take over as her lead singles babyface for now... For now...

Maria sighed and looked at the paperwork in front of her. Bills had to be paid and she had to get the locker room shipshape pronto.

Author's Note: No, the diary is not dead! It lives! Dark_Raider (who is Greek) was on his summer holiday and very busy with some important Greek work. With my move and start at a new school, my time hasn't been as open. Now the school year is settling into itself, I'm building my routine and DR is back from his holiday and settling back in to his normal life so we hope to start producing content on this again. At this point, I think we've produced something like 39 shows on this and we hope to keep producing. This narrative was a little pallet clense and to expalin where things are at in GDR.

Please feel free to leave some feedback on this diary [as there really hasn't been a lot so far! Let us know you're reading, etc...]

<strong>Hiranuma Makoto:</strong> Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to WINNOW’s biggest show of the year, a who’s who of joshi puroresu, this is The 2016 WINNOW Joshi Royalty Summit!</p><p>

<strong>Yuko Okui:</strong> Both a singles and tag team tournament on the card tonight and even in these tough times our nation is going through, no expense has been spared when it came to making sure the best female wrestlers would be present tonight.</p><p>

<strong>Hiranuma Makoto:</strong> SThere’s more to the two tournaments though, former WINNOW Rising Champion Ginko Kuroda is looking to capture the WINNOW Pure Heart title after scoring a pinfall over the champion Rei Chikanatsu in the main event of last month’s WINNOW Neon Genesis Evolution.</p><p>

<strong>Yuko Okui:</strong> That’s right, plus a huge battle royal for a chance to compete for whatever title the winner desires and that match is up next!</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>10 Woman Battle Royal</strong></p><p><strong>

Winner earns a shot at whichever championship they please</strong></p><p><strong>

Participants: BLUE Kinue, Claire Winters, Deborah Young, Eri Sato, Faith McGee, Karen Bilous, Laura Flame, Romi Yamato, Thea Davis, Zofia Yankovic</strong></p><p>

All ten participants made their entrances to start the match already in the ring, with the news here being the surprise appearance of “Baby Blue” Kinue Mushashibo following her release from North of the Border Pro Wrestling. Presumably to avoid any links to Lioness Mushashibo, she appeared under the name of BLUE Kinue and got a decent reaction from the fans while performing admirably in the ring before Deborah Young eliminated her. The former WINNOW Duet champion sent bodies flying around and eliminated McGee and Bilous on top of Kinue before she herself was thrown out thanks to the combined efforts of the remaining competitors. Winters and Flame had an interesting exchange as did Davis and Jankovic, harkening to their ongoing title feud with EWA in Europe. In the end it came down to Eri Sato and Romi Yamato, who finished the match in classic strong style fashion before a Yamatotal had Sato groggy enough to be eliminated.</p><p>

<strong>Winner: Romi Yamato</strong></p><p><strong>

BATTLE BEASTS vs The Missouri Bruisers</strong></p><p>

The hard hitting, homegrown duo of BATTLE Takenouchi and BEAST Kaori faced off against the veteran powerhouse pairing of Connie Morris and Gorgon in an extremely physical match that may have only lasted for 8 minutes but certainly took a heavy toll on all participants before Gorgon pinned BATTLE Takenouchi to send The Missouri Bruisers to the Joshi Royalty Tag Team Summit final.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: The Missouri Bruisers</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Spike Powerbomb</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="7EqFCw6.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/7EqFCw6.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Hunter-Killers vs Team Endorphine</strong></p><p>

This match played out exactly as one would expect, with Hunter-Killers focusing their attack on young lion Emiko Miyoshi and the latter showing a lot of heart before ultimately getting pinned by the reigning WINNOW Duet champions, who would be meeting the Missouri Bruisers in the Joshi Royalty Tag Team Summit Finals for a rematch of last month’s Proving Grounds main event title match.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Hunter-Killers</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Lariat</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="pyf9Pt4.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/pyf9Pt4.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Danielle Sweetheart (QAW) vs Joanne Rodriguez (AAA) vs Mystery Pink (GDR) vs Nadia Snow (CWWF)</strong></p><p>

As was explained before the match, the host promotion’s Grand Champion, in this case Chitose Ariwara, would be facing the winner of this match, with one participant from every promotion of the Women’s Wrestling Alliance. This bout was an interesting mix of technical wrestling, high flying action and the occasional multi-person big spot, with all four ladies delivering great performances but Rodriguez being the one who also got the win over The Queen of Hearts, Danielle Sweetheart, earning the right to face Ariwara later in the night while also presumably setting up a future dream match between the figureheads of AAA and QAW.</p><p>

<strong>Winner: Joanne Rodriguez</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: J-Rocker [Face Crusher] off the top rope</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="vPM9lw6.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/vPM9lw6.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Rei Chikanatsu © vs “The Dragon’s Daughter” Ginko Kuroda</strong></p><p>

With the final matchups for both singles and tag team part of the Summit now set, it was time for the night’s only title match as Rei Chikanatsu put her WINNOW Pure Heart title on the line against the challenger Ginko Kuroda. However, the match itself was anything but a breather; Kuroda continued her tradition of fast paced, show stealing performances in singles titles matches and Chikanatsu was all too happy to keep up, making the best of her speed and agility as she went hold for hold with her opponent. The two wrestlers proved that mat grappling and shoot style submission wrestling doesn’t have to be slow and boring as they delivered an exciting, hotly contested bout that ended with Chikanatsu barely sliding out of a tight spot before Kuroda could execute a Dragon Suplex, only to counter with her own finisher for the tap out.</p><p>

<strong>Winner: Rei Chikanatsu (Defenses: 3)</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Finish: Blue Crab Surprise [single Leg Boston Crab, applied after a backward roll to take down the opponent]</strong></p><p>

<img alt="vPM9lw6.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/vPM9lw6.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

Before the next match, a short video montage aired to recap the rivalry between the next two teams, Hunter-Killers and The Missouri Bruisers.</p><p>

Hunter-Killers vs The Missouri Bruisers</strong></p><p>

Unlike the previous match, this was a slow burner and it worked like clockwork, giving fans time to regroup and the wrestlers time to tell a story right. Essentially, this was all about stamina, toughness and resilience: Hunter-Killers had a relatively easy qualifying match, whereas Morris and Gorgon were already hurt from their own qualifier against BATTLE BEASTS. On top of that, The Missouri Bruisers were the older team, plus given their size and powerhouse style of wrestling, the longer the match went on, the worse it was for them. Fans were really drawn into the story of the gaijin’s uphill battle against a pair of highly skilled opponents who took their time to clinically dismantle them and by the time the match reached its climax, it felt so good it almost didn’t matter who would win. In the end, the result was a repeat of last month’s clash, with Huntress Makiko taking out Connie Morris to become the inaugural winners of the WINNOW Joshi Royalty Tag Team Summit.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Hunter-Killers</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Makiko Clutch [straight-jacketed Camel Clutch]</strong></p><p>

<img alt="At6zmyr.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/At6zmyr.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

Likewise, before the main event, fans were treated to a video package that recaped the rivalry between the two finalists, Chitose Ariwara and Joanne Rodriguez.</p><p>

<img alt="EjdrcWN.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/EjdrcWN.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

Chitose Ariwara vs Joanne “J-Ro” Rodriguez</strong></p><p>

WINNOW Grand Champion versus WINNOW Rising Champion for the big finale and even though neither belt was on the line, the setup really helped elevate the titles’ prestige while giving this match the big fight feel. Rodriguez was up against the fresh and rested Ariwara, though unlike the previous match, Ariwara showed honour and sportsmanship in her ways instead of trying to take advantage of her opponents’ weak moments. Perhaps that’s why the match lacked that extra spark to it, despite solid performances from both competitors and although Rodriguez did eventually manage to win, her victory didn’t feel as big as it would have if the story had been built a little better.</p><p>

<strong>Winner: Joanne Rodriguez</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: J-Rocker [Face Crusher] off the top rope</strong></p><p>

<img alt="IqChfad.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/IqChfad.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

After the match, Joanne Rodriguez was handed the Joshi Royalty Summit trophy under a rain of streamers and confetti in celebration. J-Ro took to the mic for the closing promo to send the fans off and after thanking them all for coming, promised to do her best in order to bring honour and prestige to the Summit and WINNOW in the future.</p><p>

They'd spent about an hour together, singing along to the latest pop hits while badly dancing in the limited space available. Every party eventually winds down to a drunken haze however and this was where they were at, with Ichihara watching her friend screaming her throat off to Adele's "Hello". They didn't know each other for too long or all that well; Ichihara had been the main monster heel of 5SSW while Mushashibo was rotting away in the wasteland that was the joshi scene outside of 5SSW, until WINNOW brought them together in the locker room. Their bonding was the stuff romantic comedies and teenage movies are made out of. Mushashibo had been singing along to herself while applying her trademark facepaint, Ichihara picked up on the song and they ended up synching in an impromptu duet that had the rest of the girls clapping by the end of it. For everyone else, it had been a fun moment that raised their spirits before the show. For the two of them, it was the start of a beautiful friendship.</p><p> </p><p> In Japan, puroresu is super serious business, unless of course you're doing outright comedy wrestling like the boys over at WLW do. As they ended up discovering after their duet incident, they both liked to unwind with a bit of karaoke silliness after a show. A casual suggestion to try it out together once had turned into a full blown karaoke craze and even after Mushashibo's retirement, the two women kept in touch, for business as took over the dojo but also for fun, as was the case now.</p><p> </p><p> "I blew the Summit" Ichihara finally let the weight off her chest once the song was over. "Kinue's debut was lost in the shuffle, the tag matches were predictable as hell and I even forgot to bring Estrella Blanca in from GDR so I had to settle for Pink... She doesn't even do GDR shows any more!"</p><p> </p><p> Mushashibo heard it all as she slowly gulped down water from her glass after pouring her soul into her performance of the song. "You're being too hard on yourself" she finally said.</p><p> </p><p> "Don't give me that canned response" Ichihara snapped. "I'm being real. I blew the Summit and I'm probably going to blow our budget too. I've made some calls to bring in more people. Contracts are coming up for renewal and I just can't bring myself to cut anyone."</p><p> </p><p> Lioness Mushashibo seemed unphased. "Well, the dojo isn't going to be giving you any new talent for a while, so you're not all that bad with shaking up the roster." She paused, looking at a confused Ichihara. "It's the tsunami. People aren't exactly willing to pay for wrestling classes. Speaking of which, you've brought in a bunch of big name talent from abroad for the Summit, despite the economy going to hell. Now that's big. It's not like you have the size or pockets of Burning Hammer. Given the circumstances, you did the best you could. It can only get better from here on."</p><p> </p><p> Ichihara stood in silence, battling her ego as she processed her friend's words. The screen of her phone came alive, drawing her attention. They always put their phones on silent when in the booth.</p><p> </p><p> "You're probably right. I'd better get home to my husband."</p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="46665" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong>Author's note:</strong> Echoing Historian earlier, a combination of work and summer holidays kept me from making any new posts on this diary, but we're both back, baybay! The WWA World Tag Team Championship has been vacated. Nadia Snow has signed an exclusive contract with United States Pro Wrestling and as such will not be able to defend the WWA World Tag Team Championship. WWA officials are said to be meeting soon to discuss what two teams will face off to fill the vacancy.</p><p> </p><p></p><p>

AAA and CWWF are said to be most upset by Nadia's signing. Nadia is also the reigning AAA Femme Fatale Champion and along with her partner Demezla Wade, they are also the CWWF Canadian Tag Team Champions.</p></p>

Ever since the vacation of the WWA World Tag Team titles due to Nadia Snow' departure for USPW, social media has come alive with a series of aggressive posts such as the one above from Dragon Assassin and Huntress Makiko, essentially issuing an open challenge to anyone who would wrestle them for the gold. While their pressure has paid off, they may have bitten off more than they can chew, as today WINNOW announced the special main event of their upcoming Neon Genesis Evolution 10 show.

After a stellar year so far, WINNOW's power couple of Dragon Assassin and Huntress Makiko, collectively known as Hunter-Killers, will be competing for the coveted titles against the WWA World champion Juana Juracan and her teammate "The New York Badass" Toni Parissi. The veteran duo has been competing under the name "Crackdown" in Texas-based Queens of American Wrestling and are currently in their third reign as QAW Tag Team champions. Both WINNOW and QAW have issued statements saying they're proud to put their champion duos in this dream match and fans are already speculating how this match could play out.

After the match, Romi Yamato came out carrying the briefcase that contains her prize for winning the 2016 Joshi Royalty Summit Battle Royal. With all three WINNOW singles champion in the ring, tension was high and Yamato had a word for each, but she ended her speech by congratulating J-Ro for her victory at the Summit. Yamato said she knows that tournament victory and over Ariwara nonetheless, is sure to lead to a match for the WINNOW Grand Champion title, but before that can happen, she plans to take the WINNOW Rising Champion belt from her first. Rodriguez was all to happy to oblige and with Yamato cashing in her prize, the match will likely be happening at the final show of the year, Ashes of December.

WINNOW Ashes of December 2016

Week 2, December 2016

Venue: Hall of Nagahama [Kinki, Japan]

In Attendance: 280

Commentators: Hiranuma Makoto, Yuko Okui

a9HagOj.jpgtQ8Sd3n.jpg

Hiranuma Makoto: Welcome fans to the last big show of the year, I'm Hiranuma Makoto, with me as always is Yuko Okui and this is WINNOW Ashes of December 2016!

Yuko Okui: Ashes indeed, as we're still in the aftermath of not just what transpired at the 2016 Joshi Royalty Summit but also the shocking win of Hunter-Killers at Neon Genesis Evolution 10 that made them double champions, as they now hold both the WINNOW Duet titles and the WWA World Tag Team championships!

Hiranuma Makoto: Hunter-Killers have announced they will be gracing us with their presence tonight, even though they are not scheduled to wrestle, but that is not all. We have some new faces making their debuts tonight, as well as the big main event where the 2016 Joshi Royalty Summit tournament winner Joanne Rodriguez defends her WINNOW Rising Champion title against the young prodigy, Romi Yamato!

Yuko Okui: What a match that is going to be, but so will all the others in tonight's card leading up to it and starting with our first contest and the in-ring debut of a promising young lioness!

Rika Tsujimura vs Asami Okubo

Asami Okubo seemed to win fans over with her enthusiasm, heart and intensity, though she couldn't win the match against her more experienced opponent. Tsujimura was clearly the better wrestler of the two and even though she had to work for it, she eventually (and predictably) got the win.

Winner: Rika Tsujimura

Finish: Running Knee Bomb

Team Endorphine vs Karen Bilous & Claire Winters

Bilous and Winters may not be teaming up regularly like Team Endorphine do, but that didn't made them any less dangerous as they brought their stiff striking style and technical wrestling into this fight. Jaguar Endo did the brunt of the work for her team, but her natural connection to her rookie partner helped Emiko Miyoshi stay in the fight and even score a surprise win for her team, her first pinfall ever in WINNOW.

Winners: Team Endorphine

Finish: Roll Up

Ochiyo Iijima vs Laura Flame

Another WINNOW in-ring debut, this time for an established wrestler in Ochiyo Iijima, who showcased her martial arts based style against the equally impressive (and legitimately trained) Laura Flame. Not as good in the ring as it sounded on paper, this match was held back somehow by the two ladies being a bit out of synch and thus disrupting the flow of the match, but it was still an impressive showing and an entertaining bout, ending with a strong win for Iijima to kickstart her trajectory in WINNOW.

Winner: Ochiyo Iijima

Finish: Paralysis Thumb Strike

Rei Chikanatsu, Sakura Sada & Nami Genda vs Mystery Pink, Faith McGee & Thea Davis

A Mexican-style trios match through and through, this one was a proper spotfest packed with fast action, flashy aerial moves and big moments to pop the crowd right after the mid-show break. The gaijin team seemed to be struggling a bit against the joshi trio, until Sada landed wrong during a leg drop attempt; the event turned things around and McGee quickly capitalized to score the pin over Genda.

Winners: Mystery Pink, Faith McGee & Thea Davis

Finish: Flying Cross Body

Chitose Ariwara & Ginko Kuroda vs The Missouri Bruisers

Pretty much a redemption match for all four ladies involved, following their big losses at the 2016 Joshi Royalty Summit, this one was of added importance for reigning WINNOW Grand Champion Chitose Ariwara as she was looking to gain some momentum after ther tournament final loss to J-Ro and in light of their upcoming title match. This may have been part of the reason why she seemed a bit too eager at the expense of working together with Kuroda and it was a weakness their opponents were able to spot and exploit as Gorgon rolled through a Dragon Suplex into a cover that kept Kuroda down for the count while Ariwara was busy brawling outside the ring with Morris.

Winners: The Missouri Bruisers

Finish: Roll Up

As promised, Hunter-Killers were present for the show and made a grand entrance, sporting both the WINNOW Duet titles and the WWA World Tag Team titles. Their celebration was cut short though when two masked figures rushed to the ring from behind with steel chairs in hand to beat them down, before pulling their hoods to reveal themselves as...

aqw0BcD.jpgeA6BAyW.jpg

Yu Hashimoto and Maki Yoshifumi! The duo (collectively known as Torment & Sorrow in 5SSW) made a strong impression upon their first appearance for WINNOW and it was more than clear that they have Hunter-Killers on their sights...

Joanne "J-Ro" Rodriguez © vs Romi Yamato

Another textbook slow burner main event, slowly but steadily building to a climax as it told the tale of two warriors pushing each other to the limit. Yamato kicked out of a J-Rocker for a shock return and sensing imminent defeat, resorted to exposing one of the ring corners from its protective padding, presumably to whip her opponent there and follow up with the Yamatotal. J-Ro not only persisted, but almost managed to hit another J-Rocker to drive her challenger face first into the exposed steel rings, but Yamato barely escaped by throwing the champion off balance and onto the referee. The official's eyes were off for barely a couple of seconds, but that was all Yamato needed to grab a groggy Rodriguez by the hair and driver her head into the exposed turnbuckle, before dropping into a desperate cover for the finish.

Winner AND NEW WINNOW Rising Champion: Romi Yamato

Finish: Pinfall after a face smash to an exposed turnbuckle

WINNOW Ground Zero 2017</span></strong></p><p><strong>

Week 2, January 2017</strong></p><p><strong>

Venue: Hall of Nagahama [Kinki, Japan]</strong></p><p><strong>

In Attendance: 282</strong></p><p><strong>

Commentators: Hiranuma Makoto, Yuko Okui</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="a9HagOj.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/a9HagOj.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="tQ8Sd3n.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/tQ8Sd3n.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p>

<strong>Hiranuma Makoto:</strong> Happy New Year everyone, Hiranuma Makoto here alongside Yuko Okui and we welcome you to WINNOW's first show for 2017, Ground Zero!</p><p>

<strong>Yuko Okui:</strong> It really is Ground Zero tonight, several competitors looking to start the new year strong and no one feels the pressure more than the WINNOW Grand Champion, Chitose Ariwara!</p><p>

<strong>Hiranuma Makoto:</strong> Ariwara won that title exactly one year ago to become the first ever WINNOW Grand Champion. She's held on to it for a full year but tonight she is facing what may be her biggest challenge to date!</p><p>

<strong>Yuko Okui:</strong> World class competitor and seasoned veteran Joanne Rodriguez wrapped up 2016 with a WINNOW Rising Champion title reign and a victory of the first ever Joshi Royalty Summit, she has all the credentials to pose a threat in tonight's main event but I'm curious whether losing that title to Romi Yamato last month has caused her to doubt herself.</p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="RxEndGj.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/RxEndGj.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="hsi4Dbf.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/hsi4Dbf.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p>

The show kicks off with WINNOW owner Chrusher Ichihara and the dojo's head trainer Lioness Mushashibo making an entrance to greet the fans, wish everyone a happy new year and take their seats for the show.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Deborah Young & The Missouri Bruisers vs Ginko Kuroda and BATTLE BEASTS</strong></p><p>

An interersting six woman tag for the opener, with Kuroda caught between several heavy hitters and the bitter history of Young-Morris undermining their team's cooperation. A decent showing from everyone involved and a strong contest to start the show, with Young getting the pin on BATTLE Takenouchi.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Deborah Young & The Missouri Bruisers</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Sit-Out Powerbomb</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="7EqFCw6.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/7EqFCw6.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Karen Bilous & Nami Genda vs Faith McGee & Asami Okubo</strong></p><p>

Next up was a tag team match where young lions teamed up with a veteran partner each as Genda and Okubo did their best to keep up with Bilous and McGee. The experience of Karen Bilous was the difference maker here, with McGee only recently outgrowing her young lion status, leading to the finishing sequence that set up Genda for the pin over Okubo.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Karen Bilous & Nami Genda</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Flying Double Knee</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="gUMXSOo.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/gUMXSOo.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Thea Davis & Mystery Pink vs Zofia Jankovic & Claire Winters</strong></p><p>

This match was built around the ongoing rivalry of Davis and Jankovic over in Europe, though Mystery Pink added a lot of excitement with her lucha libre style moves and Winters showed a lot of promise, even though she ultimately got the pin after Mystery Pink caught her with a Flying Body Press.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Thea Davis & Mystery Pink</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Flying Body Press</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="8x5Bau7.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/8x5Bau7.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Romi Yamato & Laura Flame vs Team Endorphine</strong></p><p>

As a regular tag team with a natural understanding of each other, Team Endorphine theoretically had the edge in this match but Yamato and Flame are not to be underestimated as they both bring a fiery spirit, hard strikes and a never say die attitude to any fight. Team Endorphine were off to a fast start, looking to end the match quickly but once their tactics only got them to a couple of near falls, the tide shifted against them and Miyoshi finally broke under the hail of strikes from the opposition.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Romi Yamato & Laura Flame</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Flame Fire Kick</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="vPM9lw6.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/vPM9lw6.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Rei Chikanatsu © vs Ochiyo Iijima</strong></p><p>

Ochiyo Iijima made an impact upon her debut with a singles win over fellow hard striker Laura Flame, before pinning Chikanatsu in a six woman tag match at the final Neon Genesis Evolution show of 2016, thus earning herself the right to challenge the masked fan favourite for the gold. Chikanatsu's game plan was to keep her challenger grounded and take away her offense as she worked on the legs to set up her finisher, which did work to a great extent; however, Iijima tapped into her judo background to fight back on the mat and even hit a signature aerial move from back in her "Space Age" days before pulling off her new devastating Knock Out Kick finisher for the big win.</p><p>

<strong>Winner AND NEW WINNOW Pure Heart champion: Ochiyo Iijima</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Knock Out Kick</strong></p><p><strong>

Eri Sato & Torment and Sorrow vs Rika Tsujimura & Hunter-Killers</strong></p><p>

Another chapter in Torment & Sorrow's attempt to get a match against Hunter-Killers for the WINNOW Duet titles, this six woman tag was well received and probably the best match of the night, as it featured several popular wrestlers, built-in drama and of course, excellent wrestling. A very open ended, competitive match that went on for nearly fifteen minutes, this did end in favor of Sato's team but not quite how Torment & Sorrow would like, since Maki Yoshifumi was able to score the pin on Tsujimura and not one of the two champions.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Eri Sato & Torment and Sorrow</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Duck-Under Head Kick</strong></p><p><strong>

Chitose Ariwara © vs Joanne "J-Ro" Rodriguez</strong></p><p>

Joanne Rodriguez earned a shot at the top prize of the company when she won the 2016 Joshi Royalty Summit, but the fact she did that by beating Chitose Ariwara added a special feeling to this (re)match. Without holding anything back, the two women set off to a frantic pace as they sought to out-do each other with every move, pulling off bigger and bigger maneuvers as they went on. Fans loved every bit of this, even if they were a little burned out by the semi main event earlier, and eventually it came down to stamina and resilience. Ariwara began to slow down and show signs of exhaustion, which only fired up the killer instinct of Rodriguez. Keeping the tempo fast and never allowing the champion to catch a breath, Rodriguez pressured as best as she could and after a big J-Rocker, finally managed to score the pin and claim the title.</p><p>

<strong>Winner AND NEW WINNOW Grand Champion: Joanne Rodriguez</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: J-Rocker [Face Crusher]</strong></p><p><strong>

Crusher Ichihara walked into the locker room, where her girls were having a little after-party. She would normally wait behind the curtain to send people out and welcome them back, but this time she had to be in the front row with Mushashibo. Walking back in felt a bit like a homecoming. This is where she felt she belonged. She never was a people's person, really. Maybe if WINNOW ever took off, she'd hire someone else to do the public stuff, press conferences, interviews or even present themselves as an authority figure. For now, she had actualy work to do.</p><p> </p><p>

"Great work everyone" she began, her bass tone instantly drawing the attention of her workers. "Connie, Gorgon, Karen, Zofia... please step forward"</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="0zz5IM2.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/0zz5IM2.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="HswIKR1.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/HswIKR1.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="l9oAwcE.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/l9oAwcE.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="gNAvpd9.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/gNAvpd9.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The four women stepped forward indeed. Ichihara couldn't help but notice how the massive Connie Morris was looking down to the ground, like a child that's accepted they're about to be grounded.</p><p> </p><p>

"I want to thank you for your help in getting this company off the ground. For teaching the girls how to work a match and passing the torch to the next generation. We are all honoured to have had you with us."</p><p> </p><p>

Ichihara hugged each of the four women, who then began hugging their friends in turn. Gorgon especially had a pretty sentimental moment with her protege, Claire Winters. People were already raving about how she was going to be a big star and Gorgon had seen it too when she took her under her wing. Jankovic was having a little chat with her ongoing rival, Thea Davis. They probably knew. Bilous and the Bruisers were past their prime, but Zofia still hadn't hit her thirties. Throughout the past year, there were a couple of occasions where their booking dates had clashed. They chose to go with EWA and Jankovic was probably paying for it now. Davis still had time on her deal, but probably felt she was also on hot territory. Were she not such an amazing wrestler, Ichihara thought, she'd be joining Jankovic on the way out tonight.</p><p> </p><p>

"Listen up, ladies" Ichihara's booming voice came out again once the hugging had died down a bit. "2016 was the year we tried to figure things out and get this company running. And I'm proud to say, thanks to all of you, we did just that, even with the sea itself trying to bury us alive"</p><p> </p><p>

There was a round of applause. It felt like she was cutting a promo, pacing herself to give listeners a chance to hear, understand, feel and react.</p><p> </p><p>

"2017 is going to be the year where we establish our identity. I'm looking to focus on fast paced, exciting junior matches like EXODUS or Burning Hammer's junior division. The Missouri Bruisers are gone, but I'm keeping Kaori and Deborah as our Japanese and gaijin monster heels respectively. No more big ladies though. Second, we'll be bringing in some talent from the dojo to develop. That means as much as I hate to let our top stars go, you girls need to move on. Make your arrangements, call up people, because once your contracts have run out, I'm letting you walk. That is all, see you at training tomorrow!"</p>
