Chapter I: A Warrior's Journey

 

After his pro wrestling dreams were put on pause by pro wrestling politics, Mikey James fights his way back.

[Phone Rings]

 

From: The Guru

 

"Mikey my boy, how are you?"

 

From: Me

 

"Uhh, I'm good. Who is this?"

 

"It's me, Guru, your old booker from the Coastal Zone. Heard about the news..."

 

"Yeah, it is what it is."

 

"Well, I've noticed you haven't taken any bookings since your contract expired. Any reason for that?"

 

"Uh, no...No reason, just busy."

 

"Well that's the first time I've heard a professional wrestler was too busy to wrestle. Tell me, Mikey, what is it?"

 

"Nah. I mean, it's whatever."

 

"What is, whatever?"

 

"This whole wrestling thing."

 

"This whole wrestling thing was your life Mikey. Tell me, what are you up to these days?"

 

"Not much. Driving for Lyft here and there. Thinking about going back to school I guess."

 

"So you're retiring?"

 

"Guess you could call it that.

 

"Mind if this old man gives you some unsolicited advice?"

 

"From you? Never"

 

"Don't give up on your dreams. As someone who had to walk away from in-ring competition, I did everything I could to stay in this business. You're way more talented between the ropes than I ever dream to be. Don't let that go to waste."

 

"Cool, I'll keep that in mind."

 

"Please do."

 

"Anyways, I'll let you go. Take care."

 

"I wasn't finished. As much as I love giving you a good pep-talk, I called for a reason."

 

"You're not going to tell me you're dying are you?"

 

"No, no, none the sorts. You see, since I left SWF myself, I've been saving up some money. Cliff's been mentoring me to one day open up my own promotion. I decided, hell, it was time."

 

"Well congrats to you. Not interested."

 

"Of course. Anyways, I've been wanting to move to Hawaii for sometime now. I'm getting older, and a big city like Los Angeles just isn't for me anymore. They have a pretty talented wrestling scene over there, but no real presence. I decided to open shop there, but I need a head booker. Honestly, I first asked Frankie since he and I have been talking about this forever. But he recommended you. Thought it would do you some good to run this thing."

 

"What makes you think I can book a whole promotion?"

 

"Nothing. Just my intuition. But I've been right quite a bit in this business. Plus, I think you'll like my company idea."

 

"Let's here it."

 

"Dragon Pro Wrestling. You know those old martial arts movies? Of course you do. Well, let's make them into a reality. Fight tournaments, mystic Asian magic, the whole shebang. If anyone would know how to run a company like this, it would be you and Frankie."

 

"Sounds like Mortal Kombat had a love-child with USPW."

 

"So are you in?"

 

"...Yeah, I guess. Why not."

 

"Cool then, I'll talk to you soon."

 

 

So here we go. Dragon Pro Wrestling. Head booker.

 

I'm 29. Young enough for optimism. Old enough to be realistic. Summer of 2015, I was riding high, the shiny new toy for the resurgent Supreme Wrestling Federation. But soon, the company got bored of me, and signed more indie darlings, just to do the same to them. Weeks of frustration finally boiled over...

 

Still I hurt like a b*tch when SWF pulled me off of live events after I went to the Eisens about my push.

 

IT FELT LIKE SOMETHING HAD BROKEN INSIDE OF ME.

 

For the past half year, I've been wallowing in self-pity and isolation. Alone, in my tiny Los Angeles studio, I waited for Richard, Jerry or Eric to call my number. They never did. It's every kid's dream to wrestle for Supreme Wrestling Federation, and I was no different.

 

Fast-forward to today. Picking up a few hours here and there teaching martial arts to kids. Ironically, these karate studios have better insurance plans than SWF. Driving Lyft ensures I don't have to live off of ramen. Been going to night school, trying to build enough credits to finish my degree. It's strange. A few of my classmates recognize me. Most are too stoned to acknowledge my existence.

 

ENTER GURU'S PHONE CALL. FOR A WHILE NOW, I'VE BEEN AVOIDING MY DEMONS. I WAS LETTING MYSELF GO, AND I KNEW IT. THIS WAS A CHANCE TO GET ONE STEP CLOSER TO FEELING ME AGAIN.

 

Guru's promotion gave me a dream.

It wasn't the same dreams I had from elementary to college, the ones I'd drift off to after a euphoric episode of SupremeTV. They weren't the ones I discussed with my parents when I decided to drop out of school to pursue wrestling full-time. But they were real, they were tangible. For the first time in

years

, it felts like the best was yet to come...
