MISSION: Creating the ultimate broadcaster database

Recommended Posts

Blows insane amount of dust off my post history

I'm back! Well, sort of. I thought the last time I did anything with TEW was 2013 and I'm pretty sure that is when it was but I cannot remember. I have slowly, over the course of four years, have made an attempt to build an ultimate database. A pure historical and current TEW Real World Mod for TEW 2016. With 2020 on the horizon I have got the hype and determination to blow the dust off of me updating my TEW16 database with everything! Eventually, I will get to worker histories and all that good stuff.

To save the TL;DR: scroll to the bottom paragraph!

Right now, this is more of a universal call to all arms and people willing to assist in setting up the most accurate broadcasters database possible. I want to set up based on coverage areas what is the most accurate and close to game realism if at all possible. I have over 700 networks added to my game from all the playable areas, ranging from tiny to enormous stations. These are terrestrial (ABC, NBC), Cable (ESPN, USA, Paramount), Free-To-Air (PBS, YouTube), and PPV (inDemand, DirecTV), along with many local stations (WZTV, WOR, WGN--and WGN America, CHCH, WAPA), digital subchannels (STADIUM, Comet, Charge!), premium cable (HBO), and internet TV (YouTube, Twitch).

To start out, an example would be the big five terrestrial networks in the US (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW) all have Enormous viewing set.

The rest are up for discussion including how to handle subscription streaming services (ESPN+, Netflix, Hulu, DAZN, Prime Video, Disney+, CBS All Access, Peacock to name a few), premium channels (HBO, Showtime, Starz), subsidiaries of media conglomerates.

The way I currently have subsidiaries setup are like this: ESPN Networks is separate from Disney. This includes ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNNews, LHN, ESPN+, and anything else considered property of ESPN Networks (some international). NBC Sports Group has all of the NBC Sports Regional Networks, but NBCSN is apart of NBCUniversal. Diamond Sports, the former Fox Sports Regional Networks, has all of the Fox Sports Networks instead of being under the Sinclair banner (YES is under Sinclair as they operate the network). The regional sports networks are grouped together and even include a national feed. So if you see FS West, you also see Fox Sports Network. Same thing applies to NBC Sports Regional Networks and the Chicago, Washington, Boston, etc. feeds.

I also have around roughly 100 local stations across the USA and possibly anywhere between 10-20 in Canada, Mexico, UK, Japan, and Australia. So if you see Smackdown on WZTV (Sinclair-owned Fox affiliate) and you also see ROH because they both air on that station. I've contemplated with doing Smackdown on the local FOX affiliates but it does air on that network. The local networks have been imported from historical databases to go along with current real life broadcasts for some regional networks (WCWC on PDX and Hollywood Wrestling on a station).

It is viewable to all and you can comment on the tabs I do believe and community input also suggested in this thread. Each tab has its own category:

  • Media
  • USA
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • British Isles
  • Europe
  • Japan
  • Australia
  • India (for 2020)
  • Company Owned (i.e. Impact+, WWE Network, Honor Club, NJPW World, BJW Core, etc.)

<p>Just as a general comment, but you are potentially falling into the same trap many people have in the past, which is concentrating so hard on making a super-detailed, super-comprehensive database that you lose sight of what it's actually for and end up with something impressively big but essentially unplayable: having 100 local stations just in the US is a major red flag to me, as even a quarter of that number would be more than enough for pretty much any database ever created. </p><p> </p><p>

You're running the risk of both creating massive load times for a bunch of stations that serve no purpose and also locking smaller companies out of growing because they're be stuck with multiple regional deals.</p><p> </p><p>

I'm not trying to put you off this project, if it's what interests you then by all means go for it, but it really sounds like you should scale it back (at least for the low level stations) or you're going to end up putting an awful lot of your time into something people aren't actually going to be able to use.</p>

You are not putting me off I promise you that. The feedback is actually greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

<p>I agree with Adam, and my suggestion is for you to choose a maximum of 2/3 small, local stations per region.</p><p> </p><p>

I can help with (Europe) Iberia/Portugal <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

With that being said, I will leave out any other smaller stations that he has explained. When the creator speaks, you listen. Outside of PR and HI, I would say maybe about 5-10 stations will end up being good enough, especially if it is the station that carries a small station (WCWC, CWFH come to mind).</p><p> </p><p> Europe I will need lots of help with and advice is all greatly appreciated.</p>

<p>One thing I would suggest from experience with my mod is to break down general "online" broadcasters like YouTube and Twitch into each region, I'd personally also only give them only pop in their region too.</p><p> </p><p>

The reason for this is that due to their wide coverage they tend to be the first network companies will look at and they have a limit to the ammount of companies they can deal with.</p>

<p>I know this means more work, but how about creating two different broadcaster databases.</p><p>

One consist of all imaginable broadcasters, no consideration about ingame loading times and AI. Mod makers can use this database to import broadcaster to their own liking.</p><p>

The other database is slimmed down with only the important broadcasters included and ready to use as a whole in any mod.</p>
