Draft Analysis

So the feds filled up their Written contracts how did they change?

LU: Got a good Owner/Booker, A great attraction in Undertaker, a potentially interesting Announce Team and a good ref. Ripley is a good pick up. I am sure they have plans for the aging PCO but he seems a risk on a written deal given potential steep decline.

SHINE: Lots of pretty girls and one old man to ogle them. Will have to get a Ref & RA on PPA which may not be efficient monetarily.

PROGRESS: A change of ownership seemed to throw them into a bit of disarray for a short period but the X-Mas break helped them enormously. They were probably the big winners of the 21-30 rnds. Cena & Triple H add star power and Booking acumen. Cole & Cormier are potentially quality in the box and Finlay is a class Road Agent. Eagles tags with Osprey and Lethal who was by far the best talent available post X-Mas break can tag with Samoa Joe. The Briscoes were 2 of the better under 40 workers left that late in ring terms. Ilja Dragunov is the closest thing to a risk in this bracket and he's a pretty good pick-up for a British fed. Only needs a ref on PPA. (It feels a tad weird critically analysing things when I took over the fed in this phase but the 2 big win picks were Tardelli's)

IMPACT: A solid set of picks but perhaps could have avoided wasting money by picking up a Road Agent, Ref and Announcer before the cut-off and still would have got a PPV deal and someone like Havok in the PPA phase. Carly Colon seems like a reach at 21 - no lack of talent there but he's unlikely to have gone before the PPA phase. Bischoff probably could have waited tot he PPA phase too. He's a good O/B and while he has failed with IMPACT in the past he didn't have people of the pop level of Reigns or Bryan.

AEW : Stayed pretty true to the AEW formula picks wise. Another fed that slept on Staff which I always find a little odd. They are the people you HAVE to use every show and getting too many on PPA can be problematic.

Wrestle-1: Got steals in the form of Naruki Doi and Masato Yoshino late. Again ahs slept on staff but there are actually going to be some decent post draft options in Japan so can maybe go cheap on the PPA ones and get young announcers/Colour and then get better ones from the free agent pool.

GLOW: Went for a femal partner for Fuka announcing wise. I like Scarlett Harris and Scarlett Bordeaux too for that matter. Picked a good mix of eye candy and in ring beasts like Eagles. Picked a female ref too and may actually totally avoid Y chromosomes - well unless they pick up Candy Lee or Nyla Rose (both of whom are actually decent choices).

BWF: A really strong set of picks - Orton will help their overseas profile, some really good young female talent. Only need a ref and their are plenty of choices in Japans free agent pool so it's the one role you can go cheap on in the draft. Hard to be critical maybe Hideki Suzuki is a reach given who was still available.

Defiant: Got some good staff members and decent British event and TV deals and some decent workers. Also got the sucking void that is Sami Callihan. Given PROGRESS bought a Network they probably could have waited till the PPA phase for the Event and TV deals.

FMW: Two words - The Rock. He's old, he may not be there all that much but he gives them a ton of star power when he is. The negative critique would be on totally skipping staff which leaves them somewhat at the mercy of chance and wasting a bit of cash on PPA's to mandatory workers. They should be fine though as they look likely to be profitable

Hope you all had a good X-Mas all. Hope Tardelli gets well soon.

With the draft now over, I'd figure we'd do the usual tradition and answer some post-draft questions!

- What was your goal in drafting your roster?

- What pick(s) were you most excited about?

- Are there any picks you regret?

- What were some picks made by others that you really liked?

- What were some picks made that puzzled you?

- What company other than your own would you be most likely to watch?

- How do you see your promotion unfolding once you're able to play it?

- What was your goal in drafting your roster?

To make Lucha Underground a nationally-known promotion essentially.

- What pick(s) were you most excited about?

Definitely The Fiend, Jungle Express, and Pentagon Dark

- Are there any picks you regret?

Maybe picking Bayley over Fenix, but I needed a top woman and she should fit nicley. Plus I have a working agreement with Juanster, so Fenix should show up in The Temple a few times.

- What were some picks made by others that you really liked?

willr0ck (SHINE)- Su Yung

Tardelli/alpha2117 (PROGRESS)- Triple H (He was going to be my owner/booker until Tardelli got him a few picks before mine)

CreeperGav (IMPACT)- The Usos (Also picked right before I was going to pick them!)

Juanster (AEW)- Fenix

Larrikn (Wrestle-1)- Nearly all his Dragon Gate picks

LucianCarter (GLOW)- Awesome Kong, Charlotte Flair

Dr_Avalanche (BWF)- Rush, Mascara Dorada, New Day (For being picked so late)

GooseRobb (DEFIANT)- Buddy Murphy

southside_hitmen (FMW)- Dragon Lee, Hiromu Takahashi

- What were some picks made that puzzled you?

Definitely Juanster taking Cody with his first pick. I get it fits the AEW theme, but I think Kenny Omega would have been a better pick honestly.

- What company other than your own would you be most likely to watch?

Tossup between BWF and PROGRESS

- How do you see your promotion unfolding once you're able to play it?

I think we should do good, we have some good depth that should really help us + a great TV deal with TNT

- What was your goal in drafting your roster?

I wanted to capture the spirit of GLOW with some added in-ring talent where possible. I am also crazy proud I could draft an all women federation.

- What pick(s) were you most excited about?

Ronda, Charlotte and Fuka

- Are there any picks you regret?

I regret sleeping through picks 3-7 and scrambling to recover.

- What were some picks made by others that you really liked?

willrock's mystery boxes may doom me. The extra pop on Dakota Kai and the fed overall will relegate me to a distant second.

Plus, Angel Garza rocks.

- What were some picks made that puzzled you?

Ruby Riot went far higher in the draft than I expected.. And now, to team her up with the biggest wrestler in the US, possibly the world? Seems like an odd plan.

- What company other than your own would you be most likely to watch?

Lucha Underground would be my first one to check out.

- How do you see your promotion unfolding once you're able to play it?

We should start at Cult and struggle to maintain even that. I'm in a prime position to be raided as written contracts expire. But it should be fun, and full of eye candy, as long as it lasts.

Draft Analysis

So the feds finished and the Draft is done - how did they end up shaking out?

LU: Picked up some great Lucha talent to close out the draft … and Baron Corbin! To be honest booking the big weasel picking on a bunch of Luchadores should be fun to do so I totally get the selection. It's a strongly theatrical concept and they drafted accordingly. May be down a little on pop at the start of the game.

SHINE: Womens feds are tough but there is plenty of talent there and Becky as a figurehead means they should be competitive - if it's booked right it can be a success. Good Booker in Heyman (I assume) or Jim Ross and a good ref in Chioda mean their staff is okay (I don't think they picked a Road Agent but there will be Free Agents available). Picked up a small network (take the free money) and lucked out with Dakota Kai becoming a mega star in the US meaning a Dakota/ Becky feud to drive their product could really up their overall pop.

PROGRESS: Disrupted by illness to their ownership but ended up with a very strong roster, good staff and the former WWE Network which ensures their financial security. Will be in a bitter dogfight with DEFIANT straight out of the gate. Picked up some solid tag teams and Shawn Michaels in the PPA phase.

IMPACT: A big TV deal and some solid staff and workers in the PPA phase. Should be able to pick up tv coverage elsewhere pretty easy. Could end up being the most popular fed. That last statement seems so wrong given its IMPACT.

AEW : Well it definitely feels like AEW. Should be reasonably successful but might be down a little on pop in the battles and might have to lean into The Miz pretty heavily early in the same way the RW AEW has with Jericho. In ring they will be strong.

Wrestle-1: That 3 way dance in Japan will be a real dogfight. Grabbing a good TV deal and a solid Network will help them stay viable. Lucked out with Yuga Hayashi (El Lindaman) suddenly becoming a wrestling sensei. Destiny and Decline results will have a huge effect on the Japanese War.

GLOW: An All Women fed - heck not even Nyla Rose or Candy Lee. Womens feds always have issues with lower pop but Ronda & Charlotte at the top is a strong base. Will likely be the smallish fish in the pond. Probably should have grabbed a small network with a PPA pick (free money is free money).

BWF:Japan will be a tough fight but they have the best Japanese Network & Okada so they have really good long term prospects. As with all the Japanese feds Destiny and Decline results will mean a lot. A good result for Takeshita or White would be a bonus. Will be interesting to see how a Mixed product goes in that market.

Defiant: Has concentrated on foreign workers - no Paul London does not count as British. Will be in a War with PROGRESS straight out of the gate. Will be hoping a few of their pick-ups aren't in decline early. Rollins is a stud to build around though.

FMW: Picked up the other decent Japanese Network meaning that all three Japanese feds should remain viable. Then upgraded it by merging in Euro and American Networks. Some slightly left field picks for staff (Is Liger an Announcer? Can Gedo really be a Colour guy? - they have the skills but do they have the inclination?). Will be strong in the three way dogfight for control in Japan.

- What was your goal in drafting your roster?

In short, a big umbrella type promotion that caters to every taste, from comedy to bloody deathmatches. A couple of recent events played into this idea. Most obviously from the name (thanks to southside_hitmen for that), the Bushiroad purchase of Stardom. The second, a visit to Sumo Hall in November, when NOAH, DDT and Big Japan over a span of three nights put on their own shows in the venerated building. Being there for those shows, the idea got stuck in my head what it would be like if those weren't three different companies, but just three heads of the same beast.

- What pick(s) were you most excited about?

I've got the biggest man crush on Isami Kodaka, so that's probably the one I was most excited about. AJ Styles and Randy Orton lasted longer than I thought, and I was happy to bring them in. Sareee I think is the best female wrestler on the planet and I'd be thrilled to see her in a promotion like this.

- Are there any picks you regret?

Only because of timing. ASUKA was picked just a bit too early. Two other options for that pick were Go Shiozaki and Tetsuya Endo, and at the time, Larrikn had two skipped picks hanging, and picked those two right after I picked ASUKA thinking I needed to protect her from all the promotions needing to fill women's divisions. That hurt.

Otherwise I told myself I was only going to draft wrestlers that excite me in some way, and Jay White, Randy Orton and the New Day doesn't particularly *excite* me, except for being good value.

- What were some picks made by others that you really liked?

Uncrewed: The colorful characters. The Fiend, Pentagon, La Sombra, Marty Scurrl, Rosemary, PCO, the list goes on.

willr0ck: Becky Lynch, Ruby Riot, DASH Chisako. I would have picked them all at some point if they'd been available.

Tardelli/Alpha: PAC, Samoa Joe

CreeperGav: Daniel Bryan, Drew Galloway, Hikaru Shida

Juanster: Fenix, Gargano & Ciampa

Larrikn: We were often looking at the same wrestlers I felt. Katsuhiko Nakajima, El Lindaman, Higuchi were all guys I wanted.

LucianCarter: I would soon have picked Crazy Mary Dobson if LC hadn't.

GooseRobb: CM Punk, Buddy Murphy were good pick ups.

southside_hitmen: Again, we were fighting for the same talent by and large. Naoya Nomura at the point in the draft felt like a great late pick and I should have picked him earlier. Also: Shuji Ishikawa, MIyu Yamashita, Misaki Ohata, Sakura Hirota...

- What were some picks made that puzzled you?

I think it was more puzzlement about wrestlers who *weren't* picked than who were picked. That the Rock, Randy Orton, the New Day and Rhea Ripley lasted until late in the draft felt odd.

- What company other than your own would you be most likely to watch?

I'd watch FMW if their entire roster was Sakura Hirota, so that's an easy pick. Tardelli has put together a great version of what a big British wrestling promotion could look like, so I'd be interested in following that. Lucha Underground with Undertaker and the Fiend? Yes please.

- How do you see your promotion unfolding once you're able to play it?

I'm really curious myself. I think it would be fairly difficult to book a promotion like this in TEW, trying to fulfil quite demanding fan requirements in regards to match styles, intensity and levels of danger. In a watcher save, I think it could do okay with a solid streaming service and some top level stars to bring in fans.

In a three-way race with Wrestle-1 and FMW, I think we could be early out of the gate but with our awkward product we have probably tied a leg to our back and I would be surprised if we came out winning in the long run.
