“Imagine that. Me, Vince McMahon. Imagine that, here I am on WCW television. How can that happen? Well there’s only one way. You see, it was just a matter of time before I, Vince McMahon, bought my competition. That’s right, I own WCW. So therefore, in it’s final broadcast tonight on TNT, I have the opportunity to address you the WCW fans. I have an opportunity to address you, the WCW superstars. What is the fate of WCW? Well tonight in a special simulcast you will all find out because the fate, the very fate, of WCW… is in my hands.”

<img src="
alt="Tony-and-Hudson-7" border="0">

“Welcome, to a landmark night in the industry of sports entertainment. I have seen it and I still cannot believe it… We are stunned. We are floored. We are going to be addressed by Mr McMahon here tonight on the very last telecast of WCW Monday Nitro on TNT. It has been an emotional four or five days for all of us involved in World Championship Wrestling...”

Tony Schiavone held it together and praised Ric Flair in earnest as the Nature Boy took to the ring. He felt his pager vibrate but there was no time to read it. This was the live broadcast of the final Nitro… and it was about to get interesting. Midway through Shawn Stasiak versus Bam Bam Bigelow the screen cut to black. Silence.

For the fans in attendance in Panama City Beach, Florida, the wrestling action continued. They knew no different. They would have to wait a little longer for the news. But behind the scenes in WCW it was absolute turmoil. Many big names, assured of their fat contracts, had stayed away from the final Nitro taping. If they had thought to put in an appearance they may have enjoyed seeing various WCW executives running around like headless chickens desperately trying to make sense of the blank TNT screens and what was unfolding.

If you thought Panama City was chaos you should have been in Cleveland, Ohio, the home of WWF Raw is War that night. A hastily constructed war bunker barred all but the top brass and was host to a surprisingly mobile fleet of lawyers. It all came down to two things. What was finalised… and what was missing. Vince had decided early on that they didn’t need the established headliners to relaunch WCW. They would let those expensive Time Warner contracts run themselves down and wait for the dogs to come crawling back. No, they had WCW, they had the contracts, they had -

The call from Jerry McDermott had come just as Nitro recapped Bigelow’s threat to tattoo Stasiak (another in a long list of storylines that would go nowhere). All the required contracts were agreed. Lance Storm, Mike Awesome, Chris Kanyon… there were around sixteen in all. All complete.

But as Bam Bam Bigelow came crashing down off the tope rope with the diving headbutt, McDermott delivered his own crushing blow. It turns out the fax machine that had finalised McMahon’s purchase of World Championship Wrestling had faulted at the last moment. Call it bad luck, call it fate. Every page was signed and accounted for. All but one. It would prove to be pivotal. McMahon had all his desired contracts but crucially did not have the lettering. He did not have the image rights. The brand. He did not have WCW.

Plumes of cigar smoke, backslapping lawyers and flowing champagne had hid the innocuous little red light. ‘FORMAT ERROR. PLEASE RESEND.’

The mood back in Florida was one of confusion. Anyone who had a job elsewhere had already left. Anyone who hadn’t suddenly became motivated to. No one knew what was going on. No one knew why the simulcast had been abandoned. A few remaining stragglers milled around aimlessly but most of the backstage area was deserted. Moments before the feed cut Tony Schiavone had opened up to World Championship Wrestling’s dwindling fan-base.

<img src="
alt="Tony-and-Hudson-6" border="0">

“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster for all of us, man. The uncertainty of our jobs, our future, of what we love and what we breathe and what we live. We don’t just work for WCW, we live WCW.”

Every single person who heard those words believed them. No one wanted it to end. Now, in front of a blank monitor and one or two blank faces, Schiavone was able to check his pager and allow himself a little smile.

The news of Vince McMahon’s failed takeover attempt of WCW spread like wildfire... but burned out quickly. Six days later the WWF held Wrestlemania X-Seven in Houston, Texas, headlining with The Rock vs Steve Austin. The image of a newly crowned World Champion - and now heel - Stone Cold sharing beers with his former nemesis Mr McMahon was the talk of the industry. The last Nitro having it’s plug pulled mid-broadcast was yesterday’s news.

As former WCW and ECW wrestlers began appearing on WWF programming most assumed that World Championship Wrestling had gone the way of Extreme clan before it. No network television, no Pay-Per-View. WCW was expected to announce it’s closure any day.

But then someone found an angel.. or rather the angel found them. And with it came WCW’s lifeline. There were network executives who remembered the good times. Wrestling fans who lived through the Monday Night Wars and were now in a position to offer WCW a way back onto television. No one was interested in dealing with Eric Bischoff. AOL Timer Warner’s decision to remove all wrestling from it’s programming meant that a little dust had to settle before anyone was prepared to talk business again, but by May 2001 talks had progressed with a view to getting Nitro back on the air.

They all agreed there was only one suitable candidate to lead this new WCW.

Tony Schiavone dug out his rolodex. He couldn’t recall the last time he had slept for more than five hours. None of that was important now, World Championship Wrestling was making a comeback. Card after card of scribbled out numbers illustrated the size of this job, but Schiavone was undeterred. WCW would live again. And in an industry monopolised by a billionaire who had failed to crush them when he had the chance, the mission statement was clear. Vince McMahon would come for them again and next time they might not be so lucky. This was about survival.

</summary>So this diary is going to be a little different from my
one (cheap plug). Oddworld won’t die but it’s taken a back seat for a while as I’ve put some time into having a crack at this. I think I’ve mentioned in other posts that it was round about this time that I fell out of love with wrestling. ECW died, WCW died and WWF blew the invasion angle and settled into making safe, sterile, family-orientated garbage... IMO. This diary, as should be obvious to anyone with more than a passing interest in these things, is my take on it.

Anyway, there’s been some tinkering and anyone familiar with this period in wrestling will spot inaccuracies both intentional and accidental. I hope they enhance rather than detract from any enjoyment. Thanks to anyone who reads this or Oddworld. BC.

Hello everyone, I'm Tony Schiavone alongside the returning Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan here to tell you that WCW is BACK! They said it'd never happen. They said it couldn't be done. But WCW is here and you're watching Monday Nitro LIVE on TNN!

Heenan:
Tony, it's great to be here, wherever I am. If I've never been here before, it's great to be back.

Schiavone:
Thanks Brain. We’re live in the great city of Atlanta and we’re starting the new era of World Championship Wrestling with ‘The Franchise’ Shane Douglas!

So this is the new era of WCW? Wrong! This is the era of The Franchise. I’ve spent too long in my career being held back by has-beens. Old decrepit relics in this sport that don’t know when to take that last ride into the sunset. They choked the life out of this company. But no more! Now, here in my WCW, there’s no Hulk Hogan. There’s no - wooo! - Ric Flair. No Savage. No Sting. This is my time. The time to take my rightful place at the top of professional wrestling. Ha, there’s no fat man Dusty Rhodes! There’s no -

Uh-oh. ‘The Natural’ Dustin Rhodes is here and he's headed to the ring. He might have something to say about this.]

Dustin:
Douglas, you run your mouth and expect everyone to shut up and listen. Well, no one wants to listen to a cry baby. Especially one that can't appreciate the legends that came before us. The ones that made it so that we can have a wrestling business today. You wanna be the big man? Be prepared to fight for it. Talk about my old man again and I’ll knock your teeth out. Hell, we can do this now, right here in Atlanta...

Schiavone:
Hello everyone, welcome to WCW Monday Nitro, live on TNN! I’m Tony Schiavone alongside Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and we are set for professional wrestling at it’s finest. Bobby, just last week on Nitro we saw a huge moment in WCW history with the crowning of our new World Heavyweight champion.

Heenan:
Schiavone, the world was watching and Jeff Jarrett did not disappoint! He’s here to take this company to new levels!

Schiavone:
I think the Harris Twins may have had a part to play. Folks we’re gonna take you back to last week – see how this one got started.

Huge main event last week. A match that shocked the world.]

[
Heenan:
Jarrett did what he had to do to get it done. He’s smart. He’s a winner. Like me.]

[
Schiavone:
That may be so but coming to the ring now we have Diamond Dallas Page... and man he does not look happy.]

<img src="
alt="DDP-WCWS" border="0">

DDP:
Yo, Double J. You pullled a pretty slick move last week. You’re the champ right now but don’t think having your goons around is gonna save you. This thing is far from over. We’re just getting started, bro.

[
Heenan:
Here we go!]

<img src="
alt="Jeff-Jarrett-WCWS" border="0">

Jarrett:
Page, you’re a moron, you know that? I won this title fair and square and my boys had nothing to do with it. They recognise a champion when they see one and you’re looking at the greatest champion WCW has ever seen. Now you listen to me. I call the shots and I'll say when it's over and there’s nothing you or anyone else ca-

[
Schiavone:
Oh! We know that sound!]

[
Heenan:
Bagpipes! Like throttling a cat. Gives me nausea.]

<img src="
alt="Roddy-Piper-WCWS" border="0">

Ah ha ha. ‘Scuse me boys. I couldn’t help but overhear a garbage truck spill all over my ring there. Ahhhh… Jarrett you’ve got some smartening up to do. Everyone knows that I call the shots around here. So here’s what we’re gonna do. Dallas, get yourself ready, you’ve got ‘The Franchise’ Shane Douglas tonight in a No.1 Contenders match. And Jarrett, I’m thinking next week you can have the powerhouse from Pennsylvania, Bryan Clark. One on one, non-title. Enjoy, boys.
