Using Trello to Manage Notes & Booking for TEW 2020

<p>Hello everyone,</p><p>

I have been enjoying the public beta for TEW 2020. In the past I have tried Notepad++, Excel, and hand-written notes to organize my thoughts, goals, and booking decisions. I have found them all to be annoying and fiddly to use. I also use Trello for many of my personal projects and so decided to give it a shot for TEW. It has been wonderful.</p><p> </p><p>

Trello is a free productivity app where you can organize tasks into lists. Each list contains tasks that can be dragged from one list to another. This is helpful to move tasks from "To Do" to "Doing" to "Done". Other lists may not need to be dragged anywhere and will just stay in their own lane the entire time. Within each tasks, you can add a description, labels, and checklists.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:12px;"><strong>Using Trello</strong></span></p><p>

I have organized my TCW Trello into 6 lists: <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Tournaments & Titles</span>, <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Problems, Notes, & To Do</span>, <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Doing</span>, <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Done</span>, <span style="text-decoration:underline;">2020 Champions</span>, and <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Time Decline</span>. This is all information I either want to see at a glance or I want to be able to remember later.</p><p> </p><p>

Tournaments and titles is basically just my list of championships. I like to have a lot of tournaments throughout the year and a good number of midcard titles to feud over so it's important for me to know which titles are static, which tournaments I need to start booking, and what levels those titles are at. I use four colors for my title levels: Dark blue for main event, green for uppercard, orange for midcard, and red for undercard. This saves me a lot of time from going back and forth within TEW's menus and since Trello is a web-app, I can think about these things wherever I am.</p><p> </p><p>

If I need more information, I can just dig into the title description by clicking on one of my cards in the list.</p><p>

As you can see, I have my own personal rules for the championship and also the labels menu open.</p><p> </p><p>

This is kind of my main thinking area. This is where I come up with my long-term booking ideas like "What do I do if I can get Tommy Cornell to come back?" or "I took a bad bet on trying to get Texas Pete back on track". They act as reminders, seeds of future storylines, potential tag teams, and people I should consider pushing. When I am ready to tackle one of those things, I drag the card over to my "doing" column.</p><p> </p><p>

This is my list of currently ongoing storylines, contract offers that are on the table, and tournaments. One of the great things about Trello is how much detail you can add to a single card.</p><p>

Here, I've added the storyline description, a checklist of everyone who is involved in the storyline, specific labels like tag team and midcard, and a checklist of everything I have done and planned to do and when.</p><p> </p><p>

This is a lot like pre-booking except I get to have a record in the same place where I am planning the storyline so I don't accidentally do the same thing over and over again and I can see where I'm going. The checklists are not static - I can add to them on the fly as I think of other things. Normally, I only plan out the matches for the events I plan to have in the storyline and only the TV shows leading up to that event.</p><p> </p><p>

My Done list is the things that I have recently completed. Here, you can see my recent signings, a tag-team I just put together, and a storyline that finished at Malice in Wonderland. I like to keep them in Done for a while so I don't forget about them and end up with repeat booking or overlooking a newly-signed worker. When I don't need them anymore, I can archive each card.</p><p> </p><p>

I plan to book King of Kings as a tournament involving only those who have been champions in the past year in any major promotion. This will include tournament wins. It's also nice to see who I have given championships to lately. Within the card, I can keep track of which championships the person won, though I doubt I'll have many instances of individuals winning different championships in a given year.</p><p> </p><p>

I know Time Decline was taken out of TEW 2020, but I like to keep track of who is on the down-slope of their career. I color-coded it based on their performances - green means 50s and above, yellow means 40s - 50s, and below 40 will be red. Basically, I look at time decline as putting a time limit on pushing workers. Clearly most of my older workers are still fine and will still get championship opportunities, but Nate Johnson being on the decline helped me think up my future storyline of Hawkins cleaning house on The Syndicate when he fails to unseat Aaron Andrews.</p><p> </p><p>

Heavily endorse this post, Trello is a godsend not only for this but for getting mod workflow in a good order.

 

 

As MHero mentioned, Trello is great for mod making too, particularly if working as a team with several members.

 

I agree. It's basically a Kanban board. I use it for other projects where I need to track a lot of tasks.

 

Fantastic post. OneNote (and some Excel) has worked for me, but it's always good to see someone post another way to organize their own notes. :)

 

Mind if I post a link to this in my diary, Foolinc explores TEW 2020 (and so can you)?

 

I'm glad you have some other tools that work for you. Feel free to share this anywhere you like. I just hope people can get some use out of it. :)

I'm going to give it a shot. I currently use the app sticky notes. But it get's messing with sticky notes all over my desktop. This looks like it could help organize better and I can probably end up using both.

 

Also yes always sign the Ring Generals!!

piccamo, is there a way to submit that as a Trello template? The way you have this organized is really smooth, and I think it'd be nice to be able to start a game up and plug plans right into a pre-made template.

That looks pretty slick. When I take the time to get it all set up, I use AirTable, and that has a Kanban (Trello style) view, I may see how poking around with that works next time I can sit down with the game. Thanks for the info!

I was using Excel for my planning but it's not really set up for that So my new set up will be:

Excel - roster overview and I like to have each person's average match and angle ratings which Excel good for

One note - writing my shows up - for personal use (I enjoy writing my shows out in depth as gets me immersed in my game) or for a diary if I ever get round to doing one

Trello - storyline planning

 

I'm starting to think I need to slim this down 😂

I use Excel for everything, but it isn't great for random notes or thoughts that I get every now and again, and your proposed setup looks tempting. However, I don't want to use multiple applications for this game because it'll make it harder to keep up with everything, so I think I'll just stick with Excel for now.

If you have the show as the list and the match as the card you can write about the match in the description section.</p>
