American Wrestling Association: From Start To Finish

Recommended Posts

So, a while back I did an AWA dynasty. I had a lot of fun writing it, it was doing well. Life sort of got in the way and I had a lot of things I had to deal with. I always wanted to start up a dynasty again and tried but never really felt the same comfort or connection that I did running the AWA on this mod. So let's give it another go. For anybody who may be joining from the previous incarnation, there may be some storylines I run initially that I ran in the last dynasty as a launching point, but they will not be 100% exactly the same. So without further ado. Let's get into it.

January, 1983.

Jim Cornette would call 1983 the greatest and most successful year in wrestling. Every company was doing good business, serious tragedies had yet to happen, the territory system was still in full swing, the NWA was still a dominant force in professional wrestling and for the most part...people thought wrestling was a legitimate sport, or at the very least they respected the fact that it was presented as one. However, one way or another things are going to change. Vince Mcmahon is going to expand and down south Jim Crockett has similar ideas whether he wants to admit or not. Meanwhile, a group that had broken away from the NWA long ago had been operating since the sixties. It was one of the most recognized names in the industry, with potential to at least survive the onslaught that the WWF expansion was going to bring. Historically, it did not. My goal as the AWA owner, is to survive and present an alternative product that is different enough from the WWF and the NWA that it stands out on it's own. This is that company. This, is the AWA.

The Story So Far

As wrestling veteran Verne Gagne decides to take a step back as the owner of the AWA, in this alternate history we are creating he hands the reigns over to his son, Greg Gagne who had been acting as the head booker up until this point. Greg has ideas that his old school father may not agree with, but now with Verne acting as a road agent these changes can come into place. Greg has a vision of a "hybrid" product that combines the entertainment aspects of the WWF and the legitimate aspect that the product had been presenting so far and combining the two, still maintaining the idea of presenting wrestling as a legitimate sport, but introducing a story telling aspect that would give fans reason to tune in and be excited on a regular basis for AWA programming.

Owner Goals

Short Term

Be Prepared To Lose Talent

The AWA is GOING to lose talent, either to the WWF or to other territories, it is inevitable due to our size and our inability to expand as quickly as other territories right now. The aim of combating this is to try and get as many key players into exclusive contracts as possible if we can.

Youth Movement

If our move to garner exclusive talent fails, either via Exclusive P.P.A or written contracts, then we also need to focus on building stars out of younger talent, out of the few legitimate younger stars we have and out of stars that can be found via free agency

Get Control of The Locker Room

There's a lot of hostility in the locker room when starting this mod, Hogan is not well liked and is usually felt isolated, there are multiple negative influences and the rules overall have a negative influence. Alter the rules and try to inject talent into the roster who will begin to boost morale. Over time building Hogan should remove that feeling of isolation.

Long Term

The Hogan Question

I want Hogan to be a key player in our roster and one of our icons. However his deal with NJPW poses an issue. We can risk breaking our relationship with Japan in an attempt to get Hogan exclusively, this risks creating hostilities and even then it doesn't entirely guarantee us Hogan. Especially when WWF inevitably expands and begins offering workers written contracts that will surpass our Exclusive P.P.A ones. I'll push him, but I'll need to keep in mind he could jump ship and be ready for it

Light Heavyweight Division

Something I think could really boost our midcard is the Light Heavyweight Championship. I want to modify the championship, make it a Midcard Title and begin building a division around it. I'm thinking of hiring unique talents, especially talent from Japan and Mexico that we can introduce to an AWA audience and create an exciting division. This will take time to create however and I will be focusing on building this division on our Tour Shows and on pre show matches initially, before introducing the Championship back on to AWA Television.

Get On ESPN

Historically the AWA managed to get on to ESPN. I want to match this for historical accuracy and that ESPN would be a great broadcaster for our product.

Survive

I have no idea how long this series will last, we could end up going out of business like the real company did. We could defy the odds and create an alternative history, we could succeed. My main aim is to try and do the best I can with the product and create something interesting and exciting to book and for the readers.

AWA All Star Wrestling

January 1983

Episode One

NDKrckI.jpgUbDLiK7.jpgY4wtgl7.jpg

Rod Trongard

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to All Star Wrestling here with the American Wrestling Association! I am your host as always Rod Trongard, joined this evening by Gene Okerlund and folks it's my pleasure to introduce to you a new face to our announcing team. We hope he will become someone that you will familiarize yourselves with and a voice that you can look forward to hearing on our programming. Mister Jim Ross.

Jim Ross

Thank you very much Rod, it's an honor and a pleasure to be here and I can't wait to see the action that the AWA has in store for us tonight. As some of you AWA fans already may know, we have a new authority calling the shots tonight, although we are not enitrely sure as of yet who it is. It's rumored this man, whoever he ma be wishes to keep his identity secret as he believes he should only make himself known if absolutely necessary.

Gene Okerlund

Well whoever it is he's put together a sixteen man tournament. Over the next four weeks sixteen men randomly chosen from the AWA roster will be facing off against each other in one on one competition. Once we have eight victors from these matches, those eight men will go on to face each other in a Battle Royale match at the AWA Super Show at the end of the month!

Jim Ross

And the winner of that Battle Royale will go on to become the Number One Contender to Nick Bockwinkel's AWA World Heavyweight Championship! But folks tonight we will also get to crown a new AWA Television Champion! As we witness Jerry "The King" Lawler taking on a new arrival to the AWA "The Soulman" Koko B. Ware

Rod Trongard

But right now we're going to be kicking things off with our opening bout and the very first match to kick off our Number One Contender Tournament, as Steve O is set to face off against Steve Regal!

Opening Match

Steve O Vs Steve Regal

Winner Enters The Number One Contender Battle Royale

cWtPV4l.jpgFdx6eSH.jpg

In a decent opening bout that showcased a surprising chemistry between Steve O and Steve Regal, the two showcased a quick, athletic match between one another. However it would ultimately be Ssteve Regal who picks up the win and carries on through to the Battle Royale

Winner: Steve Regal

Rating: D

Match 2

Buck Zumhofe Vs. Curt Hennig

2q9eCBJ.jpgCIW4yQq.jpg

Curt Hennig would have an excellent showing against Buck Zumhofe, the young rising star clearly was ahead in terms of his technical and athletic abilities. He picked up a decisive and convincing win over Buck, making the fans wonder why it is he was not entered into the tournament

Winner: Curt Hennig

Meanwhile Backstage

IAijZ9N.jpgqAzXJFR.jpg

We go backstage to find the AWA Tag Team Champions, Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell are both totally LAID out in the locker room area. Referees and Medical Staff are gathering around the two unconscious wrestlers who have both been left battered and bruised. Iit seems as if the cameras were not there in time when word had been recieved that an attack had taken place. Exactly who it is that has committed this assault against the champions is a mystery.

Say Hello To The Soulman

Y4wtgl7.jpgpqH1zvV.jpg

Gene Okerlund

Ladies and Gentlemen, please join me in welcoming a NEW arrival to the AWA who has happily taken the time to be interviewed here tonight. He will be debuting in a match for the vacant AWA Television Championship against none other than jerry Lawler. Say hello to "The Soulman" Koko B. Ware

"The Soulman" Koko B. Ware

Woooeee do you hear that Mean Gene? Listen closely...that myy friend is the sweet, smooth sound of opportunity knockin' at my door! Not only have I been given the opportunity to perform for all the cool cats and lovely ladies that are the AWA fans, both here in the audience tonight and watching at home. But can you believe it? While little old me gets to debut against the so called KING of the AWA, Jerry Lawler...for none other, than a chance to represent this company as its television champion. Pinch me Gene, coz I GOTTA' BE DREAMIN'!

Gene Okerlund

An incredible opportunity to say the least! However many think it's one that will be incredibly difficult to overcome, as Jerry Lawler has quite the reputation here in the AWA and it's no secret, that with the AWA Television Championship up for grabs that he is both willing and able to resort to more nefarious tactics in order to gain a hold of the gold tonight. How prepared are YOU to face Jerry Lawler?

"The Soulman" Koko B. Ware

I'm as ready as I'm ever going to be Gene! Do I know that Jerry Lawler has a bad reputation here in the AWA, hell I know it, he knows it, the whole wrestlin'world knows EXACTLY what Jerry Lawler is capable of! But don't think for a second that's gonna' dampen my spirits, or extinguish my soul! Because win or lose or draw what tonight is for me? Is an opportunity! An opportunity to show not only Jerry Lawler, not only the AWA fans, but the entire wrestlin' world "Mean" Gene, just exactly what it is I can do and that I am worth far more...than any of them expect me to be! Now if you don't mind...I hear that crowd a callin'!

Match 3

AWA Television Championship

Jerry "The King" Lawler Vs. "The Soulman" Koko B. Ware

hITqDsy.jpg

h2Cmt2o.jpgpqH1zvV.jpg

Lawler and Koko would compete in a matcht hat could arguably considered the highlight of the night outside of the main event as the two faced off in a competitive bout against one another. Koko managed to get in more offense than most people expeted when facing off against the established star in Jerry Lawler. Despite his valiant efforts however, the low and dirty tricks of the King would come into play as Lawler managed to sneak in a low blow and roll up Koko B ware, grabbing a handful of tights and getting the pin in order to become the AWA Television Champion

Winner: Jerry Lawler

The Most Superior Athlete

Y4wtgl7.jpgpapa6sD.jpg6P3m8xy.jpg

Gene Okerlund

Ladies and Gentleman, please welcome backstage with me here right now, none other than the AWA World Heavyweight Champion, Nick Bockwinkel, joined by his manager, none other than Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. Nick Bockwinkel, it seems as if the eyes of the AWA fans are currently shifted onto this tournament that has been put together in order to name your next Number One Contender. However, there has been no word on whether you will be defending your championship at the Super Show this month as it seems the focus is currently on crowning an official contender. What are your thoughts right now?

Bobby Heenan

His thoughts? His thoughts?! What do you think his thoughts are you buffoon! Do you have any idea who it is you are talking to? Who it is this company is just putting aside for the sake of some side show attraction that they dare to call a number one contender tournament? This man is the sole reason that this company even exists! You would not be standing here with that microphone in your hand if it weren't for the years of blood, sweat and tears that he has dedicated to this company AND to HIS Championship!

Nick Bockwinkel

It's alright Bobby...I can forgive your transgressions Gene, I can even forgive the transgressions of the AWA fans for focusing on this little spectacle that's been thrown together by our anonymous authority figure. If I were a member of these unwashed, unhygienic, uneducated peons that are the AWA audience, than I too would be excited by the CIRCUS that AWA management has DARED to call a tournament! Take a long look at the list of the sixteen men that are participating in this tournament Gene Okerlund, take a hard glance and try to fathom, to muster if you can a single man that can even come close to matching me in terms of ability! The fact of the matter is this...this tournament? It's nothing more than a side show, a carnival, a distraction to the fact that I am just so superior in everything that I do...that the AWA has ran out of contenders for me...and all this is? Is a sad, and feeble attempt to try and find somebody they can create some illusion of credibility towards

Gene Okerlund

Well you say there is nobody credible, but we are getting ready to witness the Main Event this evening which will be hosting two of the potential favorites in this tournament, Rick Martel and Hulk Hogan...both men who our audience believe have a chance against you and if I'm honest with you Nick? Even I believe either of these men could give you a run for your money

Bobby Heenan

Did you hear that?! The nerve! The audacity! The outright insult that you've just thrown at this great man! This great champion! You are lucky Gene Okerlund! Do you hear me?! Lucky that you are not a performer, because I would have it in my right mind to organise a match with you and m client for your audacious remarks!

Nick Bockwinkel

Gene is just indulging in fantasies Bobby, as are the rest of the AWA fans...and I suppose you can't blame them. I certainly don't. Look at me...take a good long look at me. What you see before you? Is a man that cannot be beaten...no...allow me to rephrase that. What you see before you? Is a man that REFUSES to be beaten! My strength, my fortitude, my willpower, my intelligence, my athleticism I have spent years, NO! DECADES! Crafting it, honing it, strengthening it to the point where I stand here proud as the man and the CHAMPION that I am today. I'm the man that helped build the very foundations of this company! When you think of the American Wrestling Association, you THINK of Nick Bockwinkel and that is because like it or not...I am the MOST superior athlete in wrestling today...and whether or not I have a contender this month? I'm guaranteed to have going forward after this tournament...it's all a matter of time and I've already proved to the world that I am more than dedicated to putting every second I have in to being the best. Whether it's this month, next month...or years down the line Gene Okerlund...not one man will be able to surpass me. I am...and forever will be the greatest and most successful champion this company will EVER know!

Hulk Hogan Vs. Rick Martel

Winner Enters The Number One Contender Battle Royale

K0neiBT.jpgLEwcsXX.jpg

In a contender for the match of the night, Hulk Hogan and Rick Martel would leave the fans split down the middle of who to root for in this bout to enter the Battle Royale. It was back and forth match from the very beginning. Rick Martel surprising us all at his ability to take it to the Hulkster as his used his fast paced athleticism to his advantage, as it was clear he would not be able to outmatch Hogan in terms of raw strength and power. It seemed for a moment as if Martel may have had the upper hand as he had Hogan laid flat on his back in the middle of the ring. However, as Martel would head to the top turnbuckle to perform a high flying move, he would suddenly meet interference from a huge, hulking figure that stepped over the barricades of the audience.

gNlM8QJ.jpg

Jerry Blackwell!

Blackwell would strike Martel and knock him off the turnbuckle, sending him tumbling down. Hogan would raise back to his feet, completely unaware of the goings on and hit the fallen Martel with an atomic leg drop, picking up the win and heading through to the Battle Royale.

The AWA continues it's search and signing of younger talents and apparent "hidden gens" as potential future stars. If we are confident in new talent immediately and feel like they will be a great presence, than we will introduce them quicker. I have to admire your nerve and your bravery, you had the guts to come out here and do what most men couldn't...but I hate to break it to you kid, but somebody had already beaten you to the punch. You see? With this being the first week of my open challenge? I had already discussed and organised a match beforehand with AWA management and we came to the conclusion of somebody who is...worthy of my time...</p><p> </p><p> By the sounds of it Lawler is just coming up with excuses, and that this open challenge is not quite as "open" as it was initially advertised. However before Hennig has the time to interject, Jerry Lawler jumps back in...</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Jerry "The King" Lawler</strong></p><p> But let it be known! I am a fair and just king and champion...I'll tell you what I'll do Curt. I'll give you a shot at my television championship...if...and only if you can defeat an opponent of my choosing next week on All Star Wrestling! You win? I promise you. I give you my word, you'll get a shot at my championship. You fail? Then you'll have to go to the back of the line and wait your turn! But I suggest you sit and take notes with the rest of these peasants and watch how a CHAMPION wrestles, because my first contender is waiting for his match!</p><p> </p><p> Hennig nods as the two men continue to stare one another down. Rod Trongard here joines as always by my colleagues Jim Ross and Gene Okerlund! Gentlemen, the Number One Contender Tournament continues!</p><p> </p><p> <strong>J.R.</strong></p><p> That it does Rod! It's official! Nick Bockwinkel will be having a bye this month as we direct our attention to crowning an official Contender! That doesn't mean Bockwinkel will be left wandering though folks, apparently AWA management are discussing a role for Bockwinkel that will be revealed next week once contracts have been signed and sealed!</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Okerlund</strong></p><p> Also tonight...Jerry Lawler's so called "Open" Challenge continues! The King announced his weekly challenge last week and when a viabke contender approached him in the form of Curt Hennig? Lawler tucked his tail between his legs and instead decided to face an opponent he had already hand picked himself!</p><p> </p><p> <strong>J.R.</strong></p><p> It seems as if the King's opponent has already been decided tonight as well Gene, so Lawler's Challenge seems to be open in title only, that being said Curt Hennig has an opportunity to prove himself here tonight, against an opponent of Lawler's choosing.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Trongard</strong></p><p> And of course, our main event of the evening, Hulk Hogan will square off against Jerry Blackwell. Hogan laid down a challenge towards Jerry Blackwell last week after questions rose on Hogan's place in this tournament. However if you'll remember it was Rick Martel who actually suffered at the hands of Blackwell. Folks we have reached out to Martel but he has refused to comment, simply stating "Blackwell will hear from me personally." What that means? Your guess is as good as mine, join us tonight and you might just find out. <strong>It's All Star Wrestling!</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="48893" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Bobby Duncum Vs. Brad Rheingans had a good showing against Bobby Duncam, able to match him more than some may have initially suspected due to his wrestling ability. The two got the show off the way it was meant to continue, giving the fans more than they thought they would get. Duncum would end up getting the victory over Rheingans and carry on into the Battle Royale.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Rating: C</strong></p><p> </p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="48893" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>AWA Television Championship</strong></p><p><strong> Jerry Lawler's "Open" Challenge</strong></p><p><strong> Jerry Lawler Vs....Steve O?!</strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> <img alt="hITqDsy.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/hITqDsy.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> <img alt="h2Cmt2o.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/h2Cmt2o.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="cWtPV4l.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/cWtPV4l.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> If it had not been made obvious last week. It certainly was now. Lawler's so called open challenge was not open it all. It seemed like nothing more than an opportunity for Lawler to show off. Hand picking opponents from the roster who he believed he was superior than and members of the roster, that although they may be good in-ring workers, the fans would never really envision them in Championship matches. Lawler would pick up a handy win over Steve O, continuing his run as Champion.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Rating: C</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="48893" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Enough is Enough</strong></p><p> <img alt="Y4wtgl7.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/Y4wtgl7.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="IAijZ9N.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/IAijZ9N.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="qAzXJFR.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/qAzXJFR.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> <strong>Okerlund</strong></p><p> Ladies and Gentlemen, joining me at this moment in time, the AWA Tag Team Champions and men who have been plagued by two unknown assailants for the past two weeks, Greg Gagne, Jim Brunzell, The High Flyers! Gentlemen...two weeks, two assaults against yourselves by these mystery men, last week our audience actually got to lay our eyes on them for the first time, albeit they were hidden under masks. Gagne? How exactly have you and Jim been handing this these past couple of weeks?</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Gagne</strong></p><p> You know what Mean Gene? Our back's have been against every wall...our eyes have been looking around every corner, we've had AWA management offer us escorts to our cars because even they aren't sure who it is that's been attacking us these past two weeks. Needless to say these past two weeks have put us on edge and needless to say that these two thugs have been attacking us as a way to get to our AWA Tag Team Championships...Well Gene, the fans should know...The High Flyers are ready and willing to defend their championships as and when a challenger comes along and if these assassins want to start acting like MEN and actually make themselves known...then once this business with the Contender Royale is over, then we will be happy to defend those belts. But right now? There's an opportunity still lingering in the air, unfortunately Gene, the dirty tactics of Jesse Ventura allowed him to go through. Well there's still an opportunity on the table for me...and we're aware that these two assassins may want to try and ruin that.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Okerlund</strong></p><p> So with that possibility up in the air, people are wondering if we will see similar imagery to that we have seen the previous two weeks and that perhaps...your opportunity Greg, to get into the Battle Royale might end up being stolen away from you!</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Brunzell</strong></p><p> We're gonna' make sure it doesn't happen again next week Mean Gene! Enough is enough! You hear that boys? Whoever you are, wherever you may be...if you want to get to Greg next week when he's wrestling for his opportunity? You're going to have to get ready to face both of us, because I'm going to be right there at ringside, ready to fight you off! Waiting with an equalizer, just in case I have to take you both out while Greg is busy in the ring!</p><p> </p><p> Brunzell raises a chair, showing it to the camera, staring intensely into the camera, breathing slowly and deepl</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Gagne</strong></p><p> Try us if you dare boys, because next time...The High Flyers are going to be ready! </p><p> <strong>Rating: C-</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="48893" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Curt Hennig Vs. It's time to show your worth! Time to prove that you deserve to be put in the honorable position of being named the contender to my championship! Now Curt, I've been looking high and low since last week, I've been making calls to any and all that may have been interested and I've got to say. I think I found just the man for you and when I did?! Why I had to rush to be his advocate for AWA management straight away! Thanks to me...this man now has an AWA contract, thanks to me...this man can now be considered a member of the AWA roster and thanks to me...this man will see a very...lucrative future ahead of him and it all starts, once he's taken care of YOU Curt! Allow me to introduce you all...to MATT...BORNE!</p><p> </p><p> <img alt="lL8nE8V.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/lL8nE8V.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> Matt Borne comes to the ring to the immediate hatred of the fans due to the mere association with Lawler, he is menacingly silent, staring daggers straight at Hennig as they square up in the ring. Once the bell rings, it's clear that Borne has the upper hand in terms of strength. Sending Hennig tumbling head over heels on multiple lock ups, pushing and tossing him around like a rag doll. The resilient Hennig however would refuse to stay down and fight back. It was a tremendous showing of willpower and defiance on the part of Curt Hennig. Using the support of the fans to power and energise him in his efforts. After a comeback from Hennig and the slightest chance of him overcoming Borne suddenly showed up, Lawler would intervene and yank at Hennig's foot, tripping him up as the youngster hit the ropes and providing Borne with the ultimate opportunity to take advantage, using a move out Jerry Lawler's play book, the Piledriver to pick up the victory.</p><p> <strong>Rating: C+</strong></p><p> </p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="48893" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>After The Match...</strong></p><p> <img alt="h2Cmt2o.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/h2Cmt2o.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="lL8nE8V.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/lL8nE8V.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="CIW4yQq.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/CIW4yQq.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> Lawler and Borne unleash an assault on Curt. Hogan was obvious, he's not as white hot as he is destined to become so hopefully we can use him to help grow our company and potentially nab him into a long term contract. The focus was also on the Hennig and Lawler Storyline. With the introduction of Matt Borne my hope is that this food will help establish two younger stars by surrounding them with Jerry Lawler and his championship. Happy with the grade considering I didn't really rely on the top names like Bockwinkel to lift the rating. Good sign of the potential our future could have. Still boosted AWA's pop in each region it's being viewed in so, good job overall.</p></div></blockquote>

Episode #4

Intro

Rod Trongard

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to another ALL STAR HOUR IN WRESTLING with the American Wrestling Association! I am Rod Trongard, joined as always by my colleagues Jim Ross and "Mean" Gene Okerlund! Folks! Tonight the final entrants into the Number One Contender Royale will be decided! Greg Gagne set to take on Ken Patera and in our Main Event? Wahoo McDaniel and Baron Von Raschke! We're in the final throws before heading into our January Supershow and I for one can't wait to see the final men announced in the battle to name our number one contender to Nick Bockwinkel's Heavyweight Championship!

Jim Ross

That's Right Rod and we can also expect another week of Jerry Lawler showing off! I for one don't know why we continue to keep calling it an open challenge because ladies and gentlemen, don't fool yourselves for one second. There has been nothing "open" so far about the challenge that Jerry Lawler has been laying down each week! He had a viable contender in Curt Hennig and he made sure that Curt lost his opportunity at the title!

Gene Okerlund

I wouldn't right off Curt Hennig just yet Jim! He's a relentless young man and I'm sure he's not going to let the introduction of Jerry Lawler's "security" in Matt Borne get in the way of his chances at the AWA Television Championship! But folks, on top of all that? We've got a mystery that needs solving as two masked men have been provoking and interfering with the High Flyers, Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell. There are those wondering if those men will interfere here again tonight and what it might mean for the High Flyers going forward!

Jim Ross

It's an action packed hour as always ladies and gentlemen and we hope you'll stick with us through to the end here on All Star Wrestling with the AWA!

Opening Match

Koko B. Ware Vs. Matt Borne

pqH1zvV.jpg7 VS. lL8nE8V.jpg

In an opportunity for two of the fresher faces to show the AWA Audience exactly what they have, Koko B Ware and Matt Borne would start the show off with a decent bout against one another. Dave Meltzer and his little dirt sheets might go on to write that Koko Picking up the victory over Matt Borne here is nothing more than a "punishment" for Matt's transgressions the previous week. However "The Soulman" Koko B. Ware seems to be getting somewhat of a connection with the fans due to his fast paced athleticism.

AWA Television Championship

Jerry Lawler Vs....Sonny Rogers?!!

h2Cmt2o.jpg VS. 8IMwNMJ.jpg

Oh come on now! This is just getting ridiculous! Can AWA management step in here and pop Jerry Lawler's ridiculously sized ego! Sonny Rogers? Sonny Rogers has spent more time on the canvas than Rembrandt! OF COURSE Jerry Lawler won and retained his Championship here, what else is new?! God damn this egomaniac! Somebody stop him! Lawler wins with a Piledriver

After the match, Lawler would order the referee to strap the AWA Television Championship around his waist as he posed and strutted for the crowd, bowing to them in arrogant victory. He signals for a microphone as the audience rains down their distaste for the disgraceful showing that King has been putting on for the past few weeks here, as their apparent "representative" of AWA Television.

Jerry "The King" Lawler

There's one young PUNK that's back there in the locker room...that goes by the name of Curt Hennig...and I want him to take a good long look at the pathetic example of a man that's being helped out by ring officials! I want him to think back, to every other example of PATHETIC men that have stepped in the ring with me in my open challenge...and I want him to think back...to the example that he became last week when he met my insurance policy, Matt Borne! I want him to think long and hard about the weeks that have passed and try to figure out why it is he hasn't had the chance that he and all of you moronic sheep think that he deserves!

Jerry laughs at the response he expected from the crowd, as he quickly dodges a soda cup thrown by one angry AWA audience member which bounces off of the canvas and over the rope. Jerry looks down at his title to make sure none of the soda had spilled on to it, polishing it with a handkerchief he pulls from the pocket of his robe before continuing.

Jerry "The King" Lawler

You want to know why I denied your little challenge Curt? You really want to know why I'm giving men like Jake Milliman, Like Steve O, like Sonny Rogers opportunities at my Championship over you? Because unlike them Curt...everything has come so EASILY to you, hasn't it? Curt Hennig never had to know what paying dues felt like! Curt Hennig never had to know what REAL STRUGGLE in this industry felt like! Curt HENNIG...got to ride on in, to one of the most prestigious, most celebrated...independent and rising companies in wrestling today...because of his name, and because of the legacy that your FATHER built FOR YOU! Everybody in this company, NO...EVERYBODY IN THIS INDUSTRY...already has big and bright plans for you Curt...you've never had to experience what it's like for somebody to come and tell you...NO!

Jerry smirks as he almost spits that word into the microphone. Whether what we were hearing was the actual reasoning that Jerry had is up for debate, it could simply be the excuse the King has conjured up in his head to make sense of his recent cowardess, but he said it with enough venom to make it sound all too real...

Jerry "The King" Lawler

Well I wasn't going to be one of those people that just laid down, rolled over and let some young blue chipper that's never experienced a hard day in this industry get an opportunity simply because he WANTED one! You want to know why I fought Jake Milliman? Why I fought Steve O? Why I fought Sonny Rogers? Because for so long, they've been scrounging and scraping and clawing at the bottom of the barrel...hoping and praying Curt that they would just get a FRACTION of the praise and the attention that you've already recieved...when you haven't even done anything worthwhile! Did I screw you out of your opportunity last week when you fought Matt Borne! YOU'RE GOD D[CENSORED]-ED RIGHT I DID AND I'D DO IT AGAIN! Because now you know how it feels! Now you know what it's like to be the other guy! Now you finally got a taste of real struggle Curt...and when it comes to the Supershow? Instead of it being Jerry Lawler and Curt Hennig...like you were so certain it would be...you're going to sit this one out, while I defend my Championship against an opponent of MY choosing! But you know what Curt? I'm a fair guy...

Yeah right, nothing that Lawler has done since winning that belt could be deemed even remotely "fair". Only in the mind and imaginary world of Jerry Lawler did that ring true.

Jerry "The King" Lawler

I think this little open challenge of mine should go beyond the AWA Roster...how about at the Supershow...I open my challenge to ANYBODY that will be in the audience there that night? How about that Curt? BUY YOURSELF A TICKET KID! Because that's the only way you're even going to have a CHANCE of getting on the show as long as I have anything to do with it!

Greg Gagne Vs. Ken Patera

Winner Enters Contender Royale

h2Cmt2o.jpg VS. HdDTXKX.jpg

In a close bout that saw Greg Gagne throwing everything he had at "The World's Strongest Man" Ken Patera, Greg did everything he could to win the opportunity to get in the Contendership Royale and to right the wrong of his partner being screwed out of it. Hhowever, although Greg would not see the interference from the Masked Men, he would not be able to overcome the raw strength and power of Patera and end up losing the match and opportunity.

Championship Vs. Masks

Y4wtgl7.jpgIAijZ9N.jpgqAzXJFR.jpg

After the match, a panting and heaving Gagne is met with the microphone of Mean Gene Okerlund, from out of shot he is joined by Jim Brunzell. The two partners hug it out as Brunzell offers his condolences, carrying the Tag Team belts he hands his partner his half of the belts, before turning to Gene to conduct the interview.

Gene Okerlund

Greg a tough fight against Patera tonight, unfortunately it seems that fate was not in your favour, but what that does for you and your partner Jim Brunzell here is make you available to finally deal with the masked assailants who have been a thorn in your side these past few weeks...

Greg Gagne

You know something Mean Gene? As disheartening as it is for us both to have lost our opportunity to become a number one contender...I'm almost thankful. I'm almost thankful because what that means...is that means our attention can be one hundred percent focused on finally dealing with whoever these cowards are that have been poking and prodding at us these past few weeks!

Jim Brunzell

Boys! You finally got what you wanted! We're all yours and this time, our backs aren't turned, the cameras aren't turned off...and all the fans are as curious as we are to find out what faces lie beneath those masks! We might not know who you are...and we certainly don't know where you are...but we know one thing...we know you're watching...and we know you're listening...

Greg Gagne

And we know that eveyrthing you two have done so far? Has been about these...the AWA World Tag Team Championships...so let me take a moment here Gene and tell these cowards EXACTLY what's going to happen. We're going to put our championships on the line. The AWA Supershow? It's going to happen! The High Flyers...putting their titles up for grabs...but if...and ONLY IF..those two masked men are willing to put their masks and identity on the line as well...

VePxsfJ.jpgVePxsfJ.jpg

The two men are suddenly caught as they are knocked down from behind by the two masked men...they both look to Gene, panting...one of them leans in and simply utters...

"Challenge Accepted..."

Rick Martel Vs. Steve Regal

LEwcsXX.jpg VS. Fdx6eSH.jpg

Nice fast paced action between the two light heavyweights here, giving the AWA a taste of the alternative styles that some of the wrestlers on their roster could offer. Their had been rumours and whispers of a potential light heavyweight division to come in the future of the AWA and if the reaction the fans had towards this match is to judge anything, there's definitely potential for it. Rick Martel would pick up the win with a bridging German suplex.

After The Match

Fdx6eSH.jpggNlM8QJ.jpg

After the match Jerry Blackwell would storm a worn down Rick Martel, knocking the oung up and comer down on his way out of the ring, before hoisting him up and whipping him hard and forceful into the turnbuckle, sending Martel flailing to the ground, yelling and screaming in agony as he holds on to his shoulder tightly. Blackwell's manager, Sheik Adnan stands over the fallen Martel. Yelling over him.

MARTEL!...YOU!...BLACKWELL!...ONE ON ONE...THE SUPERSHOW!!

Main Event

Wahoo McDaniel Vs. Baron Von Raschke

Winner Enters Contendership Royale

T06FnDy.jpgVS. d0cqkML.jpg

It was a moment of AWA nostalgia for some of the fans in attendance here tonight as two grizzled veterans of the American Wrestling Association faced off one on one to give us a glimpse of Vintage AWA. It was a bit of a slower, but hard hitting encounter between the two as The Baron still struck fear in the hearts of the fans and the noble native indian chief still managed to get the fans to join him in his war cry. Wahoo would pick up the win over Baron Von Raschke with a Tomahawk Chop and become the final entrant into the Contendership Royale to bring the go home show to an end
