THE ROAD TO GLORY

Monday, Week 1, January 2022

Throughout my childhood I always felt as if something had been missing in my life. As if there was this huge secret that was kept hidden from me. The very ingredient that made me, me.

You see, unlike my parents who were soft, bland, obedient, hesitant - wholesome through and through - I was always reckless, headstrong, crazy even, always wanting to perform, always wanting to be in the center of attention and I never quite knew why. It was slowly driving me insane during my teenage years. There was this unexplainable fire burning within me. How could I have turned out so different from my parents?

"In biology, an atavism is a modification of a biological structure whereby an ancestral trait reappears after having been lost through evolutionary change in previous generations. The word atavism is derived from the Latin atavus—a great-great-great-grandfather or, more generally, an ancestor."

Just a random line in a book while reading for the biology exams in middle school. Then it hit me like a truck - a faint memory from my childhood, a memory of my grandfather and one of the weirdest social situations I had ever been in, when I was just a young boy and the family was visiting grandpa in Tokyo. As a kid I didn't read much into it but now, thinking it back, knowing what I now know, I should have realised it.

I had noticed that my grandpa had these huge scars running all over his body. Curious as I was, I asked him about the scars. Grandpa looked at me with a big smile, but before he could tell me, my dad looked at him with an angry, tentative look on his face. My father then interrupted and told me that it had something to do with the game show my grandpa was hosting but I didn't believe him at all. What kind of machines would do that to a person? An eerie silence fell upon that room. We dined in silence, grandpa muttering something under his breath.

It was never talked about again. Well, not until I ran away from home one night after a fallout with my dad.. I was only 14. I stole some money from his wallet and took the night train to my grandpa who welcomed me with open arms. The very next day he escorted me back to the train station and told me that I had to return to my parents. However before arriving to the station, he took me to what looked like an abandoned gym hall. The hall was filled with wrestling rings and all sorts of gym equipment. In the back was a small office, decorated with pictures, ticket stubs, memorabilia, even a glass cabinet filled with all sorts of trophies and belts. They all had the same initials..
WEXXV
.

Grandpa just stood by the door, smiling, while I just stared through the pictures. At that very moment, the pieces came together. I finally knew the reasons behind my father's actions and his reluctance to tell me about my grandpa's history in pro wrestling. I finally knew who I was, who I was meant to be.. What my legacy would be. I knew my father wouldn't like the idea of me following my grandpa's footsteps. Good. Serves him right.. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

That day I made a promise to my grandpa - to finish my studies and not to run away from home ever again. In return, during the fall of 2017, a few weeks later from that first visit to grandpa's gym, my wrestling training started. Grandpa introduced me to Koichi Kajiwara who become my trainer alongside my grandpa.
When I finally turned 18 in 2019, the dream became a reality as Koichi founded Warrior Engine 2020 with my grandpa's blessing.

It's now 2022 and weirdly enough, we're still in business.
My road to glory hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows - more like buckets of blood and broken jaws. Not once, but twice. But I'm living the dream. This is what I was born to do.

Time to finish, what grandpa Ryu started.

WEXX Deathmatch Product Highlights

No Face/Heel divide

Fans will expect events to be 90% matches and 10% angles.

Fans will expect TV shows to be 85% matches and 15% angles.

Matches are rated on a ratio of between 30:70 in-ring action / popularity.

This dangerous style is punishingly hard on the bodies of the workers.

Matches less than 10 minutes will not be able to achieve world class scores.

Fans expect matches to be short and will be bored if they go long.

Fans would be put off by cheap endings to matches like count outs, DQ's or sports entertainment finishes.

Angles need to be short of they'll lose the crowd.

Gimmick will not be necessary, but will have an impact if used.

All matches should be aimed as Deathmatch, Hardcore, Wild Brawl, Car Crash or Mayhem.

A minimum of half the matches on each show need to be aimed at Deathmatch.

The company will be extremely limited in the broadcast time slots that they can get.

The fan base will be very opinionated and will turn on workers they don't feel belong.

The company will find it very difficult to attract sponsors.

Attendance levels are slightly affected by the state of the wrestling industry.

Using crazy bumps or stunt bumps give big boosts to segments

OOC: Huge thanks to Arber for the amazing logo and banner

No popularity, no momentum. Nothing. I didn't want any freebies from my grandpa. Just 1K in the promotion's treasure that me and Koichi provided and a handful of willing wrestlers, WEXX held it's first show "Beginning Of The End 2020" on Friday, Week 1, January 2020 in Matsumoto Hall,Tohoku. Not bad for a new promotion out of nowhere, right?</div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Things weren't looking that good financially though. As suspected, within the first month, we made a loss of -4K. Hosting one annual show and four weekly shows with just 30-40 in attendance, even with just barebones crew, was quite expensive. We quickly doubled-down on our marketing strategy: Let's lower the prices, making the tickets very cheap. Given that we weren't going to get much money from the ticket sales in the first place, why not try to lure as many people in as possible and then cash in afterwards?</div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Almost two years later in November of 2021, we finally sold out all 300 seats of Matsumoto Hall when we held WEXX Road To Glory. That fall was the turning point for us - we slowly started making profit and got the opportunity to sign more wrestlers and actually use most of our roster on our shows. Our marketing strategy had worked. Our match and show quality had doubled in two years. Not only did we get more sponsors, we started selling our own merchandise. Even though our #1 guy Shimpei Hirose was out for months due to a serious injury, he still sold over 1.1K in merchandise.</div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

THE SELL-OUT

Monday, Week 3, April 2021.

http://sadhappy.mbnet.fi/WEXX/Tatsu.jpg

Tatsu:
"You've got to be kidding me!?"

"You..
You sold out.
"

http://sadhappy.mbnet.fi/WEXX/Koichi.jpg

Koichi:
"Calm down kid. No, I did not sold out. We're going to have death matches in the future too, trust me. We just need to tone it down a notch."

Tatsu:
"
Tone it down!?
Is that knee of yours bothering again? What are you talking about!?"

Koichi:
"It's the same product your grandpa ran before WEXXV closed. You can call it "Gory Hardcore". It's not pure Deathmatch but it has a lot in common. We can't afford to have our main eventers out injured throughout the year like this."

Tatsu:
"Aren't you forgetting that the surgery went fine, Shimpei will return in no time. One torn rotator cuff and suddenly you're all jelly?"

Koichi:
"Now listen here you litt-..

Koichi grabbed some papers that were lying on the desk and started shouting at me.

"Fine, here's a list - Broken jaw, another broken jaw, - and no, before you ask, these aren't even yours - badly herniated disc, strained rotator cuff.."

Tatsu:
"..."

Koichi:
".. Broken arm, dislocated shoulder, torn rotator cuff, broken fingers.."

Tatsu:
"These things happen. Alright?"

Koichi:
"Broken tail bone, broken fingers, broken toe.."

Tatsu:
".. Yeah, so? Minor stuff, you can work through tho-"

Koichi:
".. And those were only the people who have left WEXX!"
, Koichi slammed the papers back down on the desk.

Koichi took a deep breath.

"Look kid. I know you want go out on a blaze of glory, flying through flaming exploding tables while wrapped in barbed wire. But you and the other young talent in our company have two decades ahead of you. Not only that, also we might, just might be able to get on TV and PPV some day, you know, when the time comes."

"You out of all people should know that it's not fun being on the sidelines or even working injured. Not only that, there's been several fights backstage. Eiichi and Nobuyuki, Kinji and Sotan, Tobei and Eiichi and Zeshin still holds grudges against Ritsu and you over those botches."

"This will only improve backstage morale in the long run, trust me. Also speaking about that - have you forgotten that we still have quite a few wrestlers on the roster that won't agree to death matches? This way we can utilize their skills even better and thus people won't complain when they are left out of the shows or just being used in angles. It's a win-win situation Tatsu, trust me."

Tatsu:
"Win-win.. .. Pffft."

I knew he was right, I was just being childish that day. I just felt that the timing was odd. Just when we were starting to get some momentum going he decides to change the product ever so slightly.. And it's not like all the injuries are going to magically disappear though..

Can't wait for the third time I break my jaw.

Zeshin Makioka, 35, Bulky Middleweight, Brawler

Maniac (Great), White Hot.
D+

WEXX Warrior's Spirit Champion

2 Time WEXX Warrior's Spirit Champion

Current reign 449 days, 15 successful title defences

Zeshin Makioka is a brawler who is best known for his lengthy run with WEXXV. Originally trained by WLW (although he left before officially graduating), when he first started out he was a skinny high flyer with a shock of bright yellow hair. It was after he was forced to sit out the latter half of 2010 with an injury that he morphed into his current persona, returning with his hair back to its natural colour, a good 40lbs of bulk added to his frame, and a brawling style that was far more effective than his old 'spot monkey' style. One of WEXXV's most reliable workers in terms of producing solid matches, it was no surprise that after their closure he was much in demand, eventually signing with Pro Wrestling SAISHO.

Tobei Sugimura, 35, Muscular Lightweight, Technician Flyer

Martial Artist (Legendary), Hot.
D-

Tobei Sugimura is a junior heavyweight from Japan. When he first broke into the business (via the PGHW dojo) he was extremely skinny, sported bright blue hair, and most of the time was used as little more than an enhancement talent. Realising that he was getting nowhere in a hurry, Sugimura went on hiatus throughout 2010 in order to regroup and when he returned he had increased his muscle mass substantially, shaved off his ridiculous hair, and had swapped his gaudy yellow trunks for black martial arts pants and painted-on symbols on his face and body. The new look worked, as he found work with EXODUS 2010 almost immediately. In 2015 he added SAISHO to his list of employers, showing how in demand he is. A solid, reliable worker, he's perfect for any company's midcard.

Taheiji Konoe, 35, Muscular Middleweight, Brawler

Bad Ass (Legendary), Red Hot.
D

Former WEXX Warrior's Spirit Champion

Taheiji "The Animal" Konoe got his nickname early in his career when his savage intensity became apparent. That attitude got him signed by WEXXV in 2006 and he soon got his first taste of gold when he and his tag team partner Munemitsu Sematsu, collectively known as The Pack, defeated The Peak Brothers to win the WEXXV Blood Brothers tag team belts. Unfortunately for Konoe the team was disbanded shortly after in order to give Senmatsu a big solo push and he was shunted down the card. Konoe continued to work hard and eventually got his rewards when he won the Warrior's Heart title, completing the WEXXV 'triple crown', and did so by defeating his ex-partner in a highly emotional bout. Post-WEXXV, Konoe has been working the independent scene, his death match image apparently putting off any of the big companies from hiring him despite the fact that he's clearly a talented worker.
Konoe found his way home in May 2020.

Shimpei Hirose, 31, Bulky Lightweight, Brawler

Global Superstar (Adequate), Very Warm.
D+

Injured (Torn Rotator Cuff, 4 months)

Shimpei Hirose is a charismatic Japanese competitor who is closely associated with EXODUS 2010, where he has been since their very first show. More of a brawler than anything else, Hirose likes to use lots of strikes to batter away at his opponents before putting them away with his Mountain Sleeper finisher. He has become particularly known for his tag team work alongside Commander Kawagishi, as the duo have been one of the most dominant forces in EX2010 over the past decade and are multi-time tag champions.

http://sadhappy.mbnet.fi/WEXX/Eiichi.jpg

Eiichi Umehara, 35, Muscular Middleweight, Regular Wrestler

Crazy Man (Poor), Very Hot.
D-

Injured (Broken Ankle, out for a month
)

Eiichi Umehara first came to 'fame' working for WLW under a mask as Firestarter EU, but was eventually let go after failing to get over. Desperate to resurrect his career, he resurfaced in Pro Wrestling SAISHO under his real name and without the mask, apparently looking for a way to get onto the main PGHW roster. That quest proved to be fruitless as he never really caught on with SAISHO and he ended up leaving them quietly in 2007. In 2013 he returned to the spotlight, signing a deal with WEXXV. Umehara fit in well and, while never a major star, did get a reign as King Of Death Matches, his first ever professional title. Since WEXXV went out of business Umehara has been steadily working the independent scene and looking for another chance to make his mark,
which he got in March 2021 when he was hired by WEXX.

Big fan of Taheiji Konoe. In some of my practice dynasty games i'd talk him into working in America. Unfortunately due to language barriers and lack of any popularity he then gets jobbed eternally in dark matches :(

Forgot to mention that he buffed up from Toned to Muscular and his SQ, Sex Appeal and Menace skyrocketed :D I think he's without a doubt one of the all time underrated workers in Cornellverse.

Also huge thanks to each and everyone of you who've commented or even just viewed the diary! I'm hoping that I won't be burned out with this diary as has happened with so many earlier projects. As some of you have noticed, this is also my RtG save so I've got Owner Goals on and an active wrestler UC, which I usually don't have.

I've now also upgraded the overall look of the diary posts, hope you guys like the improved graphics.

I'll be doing some of the roster overall posts this week and then finally the first diary show will be Beginning Of The End 2022 in the near future.

I might just use those Zeshin, Shimpei and Eiichi re-renders, thank you. :) I do like default Tobei though. Thanks!

Agreed, this Tobei looks a tad more realistic but also a bit too serene. Figured I'd share anyway, hoping these spur you on to continue, would be a huge shame for this diary to stop!
