Portlius
100 years of (Wrestling) Solitude As soon as Versace opened the door, he knew it wasn't going to be his decade. Michael always insisted on awarding the wings of a full angel personally, but instead Versace was greeted by the sight of Deputy Archangel Sir Humphrey beavering away at his celestial desk. "Ah come in Versace, do sit down" drawled Humphrey, sounding exactly like the civil servant he had been in his human existence, "We have a little task which should suit your particular skills perfectly" Knowing it was useless, Versace still chanced his arm, "I was hoping Sir Humphrey that I might be in line for a promotion to full Angel. I have been a mere Power since the 13th Century and i hoped my efforts during the Great War might have been enough" "Indeed you performed marvellously in that conflict, your miracle of Mons was first class work" Humphrey was all charm and polish "but might i remind you about your recent report on bringing Russia into the 20th century. You recommended Lenin as a sound man who could bring a workers paradise into being. What were you thinking?" "I spent a lot of time with Vladimir and he seemed tremendously concerned about his fellow workers" Versace replied defensively. Internally he wondered whether accepting that last bottle of vodka from that Stalin fellow was a wise idea. "Be that as it may, Archangel Michael and I have a final mission for you which should secure your promotion. Recently in the Deep South of the USA we have been receiving reports of something called....Professional Wrestling. Our boffins are divided on whether it is a sport or a kind of muscular theatre. They are even using some strange language called Kayfabe. Be a good chap and go check it out will you?" "How long do you want me to spend on this?" "Not long, just a hundred years" "A century, exiled on earth. What in heaven have I- done to deserve this?" "My dear chap, our experts reckon we could be spending most of the next century sorting out the mess you created in Russia. Now get out!" snarled Sir Humphrey. ------------------- As Versace prepared to teleport to Georgia, he reflected on his mission. "It could be worse, that new Jazz music sounds divine and there is always Southern Comfort and Mint Juleps". He began to brighten up at the thought of an alcohol fuelled assignment. The next day the Volstead Act was passed and prohibition began. ------------- This will be a watcher game based in the Effganics universe and starting in 1920. Massive thanks to I effin Rule for creating this and giving me permission to try this. Portlius
1920 100 years of (Wrestling) Solitude - 1920 ReportAmended to weekly schedules FAO: Deputy Archangel Sir Humphrey Dear Sir Humphrey A year has passed since i first arrived in the deep deep south of the USA and the home of the only professional wrestling organisation in the world. Southern Pro Wrestling operate out of the Loomis Plantation and initial reconnaisance soon realised that the weekly wrestling events are little more than fronts for the sale of Papa Loomis's two star Moonshine. The business model appears to be working as they are consistently selling out the 150 seat barn and have made a little over $100,000 dollars in profit. Their popularity, calculated by the Celestial Computer, has increased from 17 to 32 and their three best shows were all rated in the 50s. Their product was described me as "Silver Age Pro Wrestling" and no i dont know what that means either. They have a roster of 20, 15 of them are male wrestlers. The best are mentioned below: Champions of SPW(Pop refers to home region) - Slow Joe Boone - American -SPW Heavyweight - Pop 28 - Star - Frederick Herzog - German - SPW South Eastern Champ - Pop 18 - Emilio Suarez wrestling as El Espiritu - Mexican - Pop 31 - Star and Worlds 1st professional Luchador. Only 21 Young Wrestler of the Year 1920 - Sir Anthony Henry - British - Pop 32 - Major Star - Danielle Loiselle - Canadian - Pop 40 - Major Star independent wrestler of the year 1920 - Saito Kuruki - Japanese - Dan Loomis - Owner & Moonshiner - Announcer of the Year 1920 Big Valley- SPW Tag Champs (El Spiritu & Earl Wilkens) Earl Wilkens - American - 2020 graduate of the Great Lakes Pro Academy - Pop 19 in SE Match of the year: Herzog defeated Loiselle (59) MOTY 1920 Show of the year: SPW The Ego has Landed (56)SOTY 1920 As for the rest of the world, there are approximately 25-30 unemployed wrestlers in the USA and 9-12 in other regions apart from the empty India. So I expect new promotions should be opening shortly. Your humble servant Versace the Watcher
Portlius
1920 Diary "The Watcher's" Diary, 1920Amended Infiltrating the command structure of SPW proved surprisingly easy. Loomis's two star moonshine was cheap and easy to make, but customers were starting to go blind. I persuaded Monaghan I was a distant cousin from the old country, Compton Mackenzie, who was also a master distiller. Inside the week I was a junior partner of the Loomis distillery and the quality of the moonshine improved ten fold. I also acquired my moonshine moniker "Whiskey Mack" I wondered if it was appropriate that a probationary Angel was working for organised crime but I justified it by saving serveral souls from an untimely death by alcohol poisoning, as well as ensuring I had some decent hooch to swig. People were soon coming from all around - Loomis coined the phrase "Come for the booze, stay for the wrestling". Setting the events at his plantation meant he got plenty of warning of a raid by the Bureau of Prohibition, and Sheriff O'Keefe was delighted to receive a bottle or two of "Loomis Premium Reserve" alongside a decent retainer. We even had a party of Yankees from New York City come by, they were a charming bunch of colonials. A strapping young buck called Baby Ruth could drink like an archangel and i got a little bit tipsy. So when he mentioned his troubles with a bunch of Bostonians I impulsively shouted "A curse on the Red Sox!" I am sure it will wear off soon. Inside the SPW Those good old boys sure can drink! Fortunately they seem to be blessed with a sunny disposition when inebriated so the mood of the company looks pretty good at the moment. Mister Loomis is making money growing the worlds only wrestling promotion so why not enjoy the ride? They do however have a few potential problems on the horizon. the main ones being Friedrich Herzog & Earl Wilkins. Herzog has an inflated opinion of his skills and value. Herzog is ably represented by Monaghan so probably feels protected. Fortunately the workhorses of the promotion seem content to let the rookie have his moment in the sun for now. Wilkens on the other hand could be something special. Good on the mic, good performance skills, this super heavyweight could be the future of a Sports Entertainment promotion, but he is an egomaniac 1921 Prediction Competition 1. A new promotion will be formed at the end of 1921. Which founder member of the SPW will return to his home region to become CEO? 2. How many SPW titles will change hands in 1921? 3. [Tiebreak]. Portlius
1922 Diary "The Watchers" Diary, 1922 Inside the POG 1922 could be described as the life on the ocean waves, I lost count of the number of transatlantic crossings i did in the company of Herzog and Mornaghan. It soon became clear why Loomis allowed Herzog to work for both companies: while Mornaghan might be a third rate carnie he was also a first rate smuggler. Cigarettes went across to Europe and fine French brandy, Irish whiskey and German Schnapps went back to the states. His real genius was an ability to sense a bent custom official at fifty paces. With hyper inflation running rampant throughout Germany bartering was back in a big way and premium brand Virginian cigarettes were much in demand. I was pleasantly surprised by how positively the titanic teuton reacted to the responsibility of being the boss. He knuckled down to learning the trade and on no less than eight occasions he booked himself to lose title matches to Teddy Laubson and Arjun Plooster, and these were the top eight shows of the year. In honour of this i awarded him the Giving Performer and Professional attributes Unfortunately the owner Lauro Fridell proved to be a bit of a sleazy bounder, over 20 workers quit by the end of the year. Even in a recession POG cannot afford to alienate so many employees. Both Teddy and Arjen can be described as charismatic athletes but sorely in need of training in the fundamental skills. Indeed that sums up most of the roster, there doesn't appear to be a ring general in the whole of Europe. Its going to be a challenge to get good match grades without changing from the Classic Wild West product. Unfortunately the most talented worker i saw this year didnt join the POG. An austrian called Schiklegruber was the best heel manager i had ever seen. The prancing ranting buffoon could generate an unbelievable amount of heel heat. He only wanted to be the boss though and that wasnt going to happen. He went off to Munich to do something political, I reckon thats the last we'll see of him. Inside the SPW Trouble could be brewing in the SPW, old man Loomis is making money hand over fist but he is still paying the workers peanuts. He finally booked Sir Anthony to win the South Eastern title but Slow Joe's perpetual hold on the main title is creating resentment. El Espiritu has just created an unbelievable new move, he was good before, now he is world beating. 1922 Prediction Results CPBHBK 1 EpicCorey 1 1923 Prediction Competition A new promotion will be formed at the end of 1923. El Espiritu walked out of SPW at the first opportunity claiming a debt, he was furious at the meanness of Loomis. Now that he could concentrate full time on VLL he simply powered the fed on a record breaking year of relentless growth, being the star of the show on nearly every occasion. Attendances grew from 90 to nearly 1500 and grew to small size in under a year.

A strong batch of rookies and the perfect product of Historical Lucha Libre mean that they are putting on matches way above expectations, and VLL is expanding unbelievably fast. Dan Loomis and SPW must have noticed this rise and hatched plans, surely?

The sense of camaraderie is almost palpable with this group of young men, and the nights at the Cantina are becoming the stuff of legends. One night i tried a mix of Tequila, Triple Sec and Lime Juice, and that scamp El Espiritu put salt around the rim of my glass instead of sugar. The joke backfired though as it was absolutely delicious. The barmaid Margarita asked me for the recipe and I was happy to oblige. If it becomes a local favourite then who I am to be jealous with the recipe?

Notes from SPW

The good news was that the SPW made over a million dollars, the bad news is that it should have been two. Losing the two best wrestlers on the planet was bad but in Sir Anthony Henry and Slow Joe Boone they have at least some cover. However losing a million pounds worth of top quality hooch in a Treasury Raid was a disaster. They seemed to know when and where to strike, so now Dan Loomis has an unpleasant thought: does he have a stool pigeon in his organisation?

Notes from POG

It doesnt get any easier for Friedrich. While his young roster are getting much needed on the job training, the owner Lars Fridell continuesto be an utter sleazeball. It's going to be tough enough for the German promtion to get much bigger with a Classic Wild West product, so could I help this company out?

After a few weeks i realised Fridell was possessed by a minor demon of self-destruction. I wound up Herzog enough to smite the sleazy swede with righteous fury and then exorcised the demon. When he came around, Fridell now has a lively personality. It will still be extremely tough for POG though.

1924 prediction contest

Which region gets its first company in August 1924?

Who is the stool pigeon in the SPW, if any?

SPW Head Booker Frank Norris is due to retire very shortly. Portlius
1924 Diary "The Watchers" Diary, 1924 Notes from the QCW Montreal may be cold in the winter but it is undeniably beautiful. The beer is first class even if the whisky is a bit strange. It feels ironic that the border towns of goody two shoes Canada is making a killing exporting quality booze to the thirsty yanks. For the first six months of the year I witnessed the remarkable rise of QCW using a Wrestling as a Sport product. Daniel Loiselle had 33 singles matches in 1924, he won 33 of them. They ranked #1 - #33 in the top matches of QCW. He pretty much carried the entire promotion on his back from Insignificant to Small in under a year and the World Wrestling authority rated him the third best wrestler on the planet. Third. Apparently the ratings committee of the WWA met at the Loomis plantation where much top quality hooch was handed around, but even so.... To be fair he has some good young talent to back him up: Galtier Therien is the prototypical monster heel but he also can talk and he can properly wrestle. He was deservedly young wrestler of the year and the future looks very bright. Bryant Larcher, Constanzo Arbour and Alain Dedeaux all bring something to the table as well plus they have the second best commentary team in wrestling. Can they keep this forward progress next year? Notes from the AOW While I waited for AOW to open in Birmingham, I took a few weeks off to watch the Paris Olympics. There I met a remarkable young Scotsman called Eric Liddell. The earnestness of his faith cast a blazing aura around him for those with the sight to see it. His refusal to compete on a Sunday meant he was unable to compete in his preferred event but I persuaded him to run in the 400m. I also cast a small blessing which was magnified by his devotion. When I heard he won the gold medal even I was moved to prayer. He left to do missionary work in China, I have no doubt I will see him in heaven at the end of this assignment. The Owner/booker of the AOW, Dustin Youngblood, had established a catch wrestling product. He was hampered severely by the talent, some good athletes and talkers but there was nothing resembling a decent road agent or ring general around. However in a stroke of genius he signed up Anthony Henry and the worlds greatest wrestler (according to the WWA) returned from exile. Even more importantly he put over each of the three individual belt owners and these matches pushed the company up to Tiny Size. They still have a long way to go but with a young roster getting regular matches the capability to improve is there. Now the big mystery to solve is this: Henry was destined to be the Owner/Booker of All Out Wrestling, it was written to the stars. So why did he opt out? Notes from the SPW The gradual exodus of the starting seven is starting to hurt SPW. They cannot get any traction towards rising to Medium Size and they blow several hundred thousands running events in the Mid South in a vain attempt to get that all important second region up to scratch. They really need some of the new guard to step up but it doesn't help when some of the best jump ship. Mr Loomis's increasingly miserly ways are hurting this company now, whats the point of having six million in the bank if you dont use it? Three key workers left this year: Awesome Alan Baldwin and Vincent Hecht both had a ton of promise and losing the legend that is Saita Kuroki was a psychological blow if nothing else. Loomis needs to realise that keeping workers at $30 a show is a false economy. I had a strange premonition in December when they finally shut down the old 150 seater Plantation barn. Don Loomis is the 60 year old owner of a multi-million dollar business, pretty soon the likely heirs will be staking a claim... Notes from the VLL Like the QCW the VLL rely on one man to do the heavy lifting. Unfortunately the VLL has very little in the way of second string talent becoming Main Eventers. Felipe Soliz is the best of a mediocre bunch. The biggest problem is Jorge Allende, the boss and champion. One defence in two years is not acceptable. The VLL need El Espiritu feuding for a title, ideally with Allende. Somebody needs to step up and become the number two and fast. The product change to Classic Lucha Libre in July caused some disruption but hopefully the more modern product will help now. Notes from the POG Steady as she goes. The biggest story for European Wrestling comes from the popular press. Noted Greek superhero The Black Bee has expressed an interest in becoming a pro wrestler. His Popularity of 57 throughout Europe means he would be worth signing even if he cannot hit a move. Wonder what his match fee would be though? Finally it appears that 1925 will be the year of something called the Radio. Apparently sounds come out of thin air from many miles away. Pah humans, we learnt that trick millenia ago. There are tiny radio stations appearing in every wrestling area and the SPW, VLL and QCW are all starting a regular broadcast show to boost popularity. Watcher Versace 1925 Prediction Competition Which one of the SPW, VLL or QCW get their radio show cancelled in 1925? How many of these three radio shows are broadcast in an area that will help them grow to Medium Size? Predestined Frank Norris Promotions will open in Philadelphia in July. Which SPW founder will be the Head booker? The seventh company will open in a virgin territory at the end of 1925. Will it be in Queensland or Chubu? [Tiebreak: how much will it cost per appearance for POG to sign Black Bee?] If anybody wants to suggest a possible heir to the Loomis fortune feel free: so far I am contemplating some from the following: wife, trophy wife, long lost son, baptist minister nephew , sheriff son-in-law, overlooked daughter, illegitimate sprog, black sheep of the family, pushy nephew, harvard student grandson....as well as possible power plays from existing SPW workers. Any requests or suggestions gratefully received

Portlius
1925 diary

"The Watchers" Diary, 1925

Radio killed the Newspaper Star?

By the end of 1925 no less than four promotions were making shows especially for Radio. The owners and bookers struggled

initially though: both SPW (tristate Radio) and VLL (Occidente Radio) chose regions which would not help them grow to medium

size, while QCW's offering for Manitoba Radio was so poor that the show was cancelled within three months.

Only Friedrich Herzog and POG seemed to have their finger on the pulse, once they grew to Small they put out a show on Scandanavian

Radio which will definitely help them rise to medium. This company is impressing more and more with their slow and steady expansion.

The Funeral of Frank Norris

One afternoon in May, Frank Norris fell asleep in the Georgia Sunshine after a jar of moonshine. Unfortunately that was the 67 year olds last

drink of the devilish stuff as he shuffled off this mortal coil. I will miss the good old boy, I hope purgatory wont be too long for him. The death of

his old partner and drinking buddy hit Don Loomis hard. He clearly started thinking about his own mortality.

The funeral was held at the Loomis Plantation and Frank's Ashes were reverently placed under his plaque in the newly created SPW Hall of Fame.

Most of the originals of the SPW attended to pay their respects, and in many respects the wake was a defacto summit meeting for the heads of

the five wrestling promotions.

Frank Norris Jnr turned up, a real chip off the old block but with more hair and less liver and brain damage. I could sense greatness in him, his

booking skill is world class. He also inherited Old Franks minority share holding in the SPW so he immediately became a major player in the

wrestling world.

Inside FNP

Young Frank Norris wanted Don Loomis's blessing to open a promotion in Philadelphia in July. The negotiations clearly went well: a whole host of workers are now on

the weekly Atlanta-Philadelphia commute and working for both promotions: Loomis, Norris, Andrews (as booker of FNP), Savage Serge Chausette,

Augustus Robinson/Ahmed Partin, Beckett Byrd & Sam St. Hubbin are all major stars for FNP. Five others are stars working for both promotions.

With such a talent base the company couldnt help but have a decent start, and the product is Respectful Wrestling, so as these guys can gain

experience it should grow nicely. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to see FNP becoming a development promotion for SPW or allied to it. Conversely

if they fall out the loss of talent could be catastrophic for either or both.

Potential Heirs to the SPW

Honey Loomis - Don's second wife after Miss Diane passed away in 1919. Honey is a former Texas beauty queen and good time girl. Surprisingly shrewd

but interest in wrestling ends at the massage table, offering to oil up the young men.

Don Loomis III - Grandson & Harvard Business Student. Son of Don Jr who perished in the Great War, missing in action near Passachendale. A bit of a wild child but

getting a solid education on how to be a company guy, while spending the vacations in the front office of the SPW. Lives for wrestling.

Pastor Otis - Younger Brother. A safe pair of hands, earnest soul who has a fine chapel and rectory thanks to generous donations from Don. A keen member of the

temperance society, he nevertheless has the occasional mint julep as a "nerve tonic". Cares deeply for the spiritual wellbeing of the SPW.

Otis Jr - Nephew and son of Otis. This son of a preacher man is a human tomcat. Beautiful, charming and an utterly one-tracked mind. Allegedly a genius, but only ever

used for seduction.

Buford P Johnson - Son-in-law and Mayor. Not a man to be underestimated, especially as the new sheriff is his brother Roscoe P Johnson. Would be a great ally for the

next chairman of Southern Professional Wrestling, or a terrible foe.

Versace

1926 prediction contest

Who will be the first company to make it to Medium Size?

Which potential heir to the Loomis estate will be the next owner of the SPW? Portlius
Diary 1926 "The Watchers" Diary, 1926 The Birth of Queensland Wrestling (8th) Arriving in Brisbane in the middle of a glorious aussie summer, I reflected that this place had developed quite a bit since my last visit. My last visit was as an officer on the first fleet in 1788 and the early colonists/prisoners had clearly done well. The convict genes are clearly quite strong: my suggestion that they start smuggling their excellent rum into the US was taken up with alacrity. Frank Laboy started up as owner of Queensland Wrestling but for some reason he didnt want a head booker. I stepped in for the first event and convinced him to hire cricketing legend Terry Aguirre whose 50 popularity throughout the Australia had to be worth his $900 a show pay packet. Unfortunately it wasn't. For some reason the aussies cannot produce more than one or two good shows a year. I quietly resolved to set up QW with a decent credit line until Frank hired a decent booker. A $100,000 injection of funds ought to help them stabilise themselves financially, all bets are off though if a second Oceanic promotion opens. QW have one major star, two stars and no head booker. They are the first promotion to have a womens division. They have a talented young squad, several of whom are potential ring generals, but they desperately need a head booker. They lost 50k last year, Terry Aguirre's wages pretty much account for that. Birth of CSW (5th) August saw me heading to Chicago to investigate wrestling's newest promotion, Chicago Style Wrestling. They are the first "Sports Entertainment" style promotion so they could be a natural home for the hordes of workers whose main strength is their entertainment skills. They too have a small womens division and Emerson Walden became the first female champion for any promotion in the world. CSW have no stars at all, so either need to develop some or buy them in. Starting with 25 popularity in the Great Lakes really helped. I met a prominent local businessman called Al Capone. He was utterly charming but i soon realised that his soul was lost to the other side. I made my excuses and left town very quickly, looks like Chicago is not a safe place for angels right now. Inside SPW (1st) It is a sad thing to say but SPW are waiting for Don Loomis to retire. Slow Joe Boone is not strong enough to carry the company and they have lost a succession of talented youngsters to other promotions because they got tired of waiting for their shot. The development of Beckett Byrd into a major star has been the one bright spot, when will the Don let Beckett challenge for the heavyweight crown? SPW have two major stars and three stars. More details have emerged about Jay Lutter leaving: the road agent wanted a piece of the company and Mr Loomis went ballistic. Lutter is still the worlds only legitimate road agent and now he works for QCW and FNP. I can see both of them going past SPW within a few years. Inside VLL (2nd) VLL now have two major stars (no stars): the improvement of Paco Acuna into a legitimate rival to El Espiritu has kickstarted VLL towards medium size. A year or two and they will be there. Inside QCW (3rd) A strategy of alternating between Quebec and Ontario paid off: By October they were the world's first medium sized company, more awards than you can shake a stick at and three of the four best wrestlers in the world. They also had tempted Jay Lutter into being their road agent. Yet the WWA rate them only the third biggest company? Don Loomis must have a lot of friends on that judging panel. Only one major star in Daniel Loiselle, can they raise the profile of others? Or will they start poaching talent? Inside FNP (4th) Four major stars and three stars. Being perceived as the junior company to SPW has its perks. Should increase to small size, indeed its long term future may be better than SPW, it certainlyhas more depth in its roster than SPW has. Inside the POG (6th) Two major stars and two stars. Another year of solid growth. They may only be sixth but they have a good squad, no local rivals and a clear media plan. Inside the AOW (7th) One major star and two stars. Sir Anthony Henry may not have wanted to be the owner but he is quite happy to be the superstar on this roster. The development of Joel Imes and Jimmy Horn into stars has been most pleasing. Similar to position to POG, a lot of positives to look forward to. Versace 1927 prediction contest Who will be the booker to the first Japanese promotion? Who will be the booker to the next American promotion? How many SPW champions are poached by a written contract from QCW?

Portlius
1927 diary "The Watchers" Diary, 1927 The birth of KINKI (6th) Saita Kuroki returned to the land of his birth to open the first promotion in Japan. Kinki operate a strong puroresu style and given the quality of worker available, a good strong start from KINKI was inevitable. I don't remember too much about my trip to the land of the rising sun other than the sake was wonderful. The birth of CWB (9th) The fourth American promotion and second based in the tri state area. it is really reaping the benefit of all the experienced pros with previous big promotion experience. Buffalo is not a great place to stay, i was so bored that i even pranked the guys that their fried chicken were tiny buffalo wings. Rest of the Promotions Another year of stagnation for SPW. VLL made it to Medium Size. It's only a matter of time now before they become number one. QCW increased Loiselle's pay to $620 per appearance and more importantly poached Savage Serge, Alf Moonin and Awesome Alan from SPW&FNP handshake deals. The squeeze will be on SPW's small squad. FNP radio show Featured Attraction lasted for only four episodes. Losing three stars to QCW slowed them down big time. They have stopped gaining popularity. Slow and steady improvement. Inside the AOW - Mateo Pastor's appointment as Head Booker has made a difference, as well as the product change to wrestling as a sport. AOW have gone past POG. They are looking good for medium size in a couple of years. POG is still improving but it is slowing right down. They need some star talent to kick on. QW is really struggling, no improvement and a 50k loss. Versace 1928 prediction contest Who will be the number one promotion at the end of 1928? Which potential heir to Don Loomis signs for a rival promotion??
