Jon Jones vs. Dominick Reyes II to headline UFC 253; A new UFC Flyweight Champion to be crowned in co-main event

Sunday of Week 4 of June 2020

The UFC today announced that UFC 253, titled One More Time, will be headlined by UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones defending his title against Dominick Reyes.

The main event of UFC 253 is a rematch of the controversial headliner of UFC 247 from this past February, when Jones retained his light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision win over Reyes. The result was controversial because it was widely felt that Reyes had done more than enough to wrest the light heavyweight title from the long-time champion, yet the judges saw things differently and gave the fight to Jones by unanimous decision, giving Reyes the first loss of his career.

This time out, however, both men will be looking to ensure that there is no controversy over how the fight ends as they each look to make a definitive statement and walk out of UFC 253 as the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.

In the co-main event of the evening, the UFC Flyweight Championship will be decided as Kai Kara-France faces Alexandre Pantoja. The flyweight title has been vacant since the former champion, Henry Cejudo, elected to move to bantamweight permanently, having won the bantamweight title and deciding to focus on defending that championship. Now, it’s time the fill the vacancy in one of the UFC’s most action-packed division.

Both of these fighters enter this championship contest with impressive record; Kara-France has only lost once in his last eleven fights, with his last fight seeing Kara-France knock out Rogerio Bontorin with a blistering series of punches. Meanwhile, Pantoja is 22-4, a record that includes an 11-fight win streak. Kara-France and Pantjoja will enter UFC 253 on top-form, but only one of them will leave as the new UFC Flyweight Champion.

Who will walk out of UFC 253 with the flyweight gold?

UFC 253 will also see the long-awaited return to action of Thiago Santos.

Santos last fought at UFC 239 in July of last year when he challenged Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title. While Santos took Jones to a split-decision, becoming the first fighter to ever win a scorecard against Jones, Santos not only lost the fight but he also suffered a horrible knee injury as Santos suffered a torn left LCL, PCL, MCL, meniscus, cracked his Tibia, as well as partially tore his right ACL.

Santos will be look to prove that he can still compete at the highest level when he returns to action at UFC 253, but his opponent will be a resurgent Johnny Walker, who himself has something to prove, with his much-hyped progress up the light heavyweight ladder being stunted with back-to-back losses to Corey Anderson and Nikita Krylov. Walker got back into the win column with a victory over Gadzhimurad Antigulov earlier in the year, and now, at UFC 253, he will be hoping to show the kind of form that had fighters and fans alike touting Walker as a future champion.

We’ll also see a top clash in the women’s strawweight division when Michelle Waterson goes up against Yan Xiaonan. Waterson, a long-time fan favourite, is coming off a hard-fought loss to former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, a fight where Waterson pushed her opponent to the limit. For Yan, she will looking to extend her unbeaten run to 12 fights, and a win over Waterson, especially an emphatic one, could put Yan in line for a shot at division champion Weili Zhang.

A bruising clash in the heavyweight division pits Walt Harris against Marcin Tybura, and the main card opens up with another rematch, this one featuring the return to action of the legendary Anderson Silva, as he takes on Chris Weidman. These two men have fought twice before and, even though Weidman won both fights, neither victory was decisive; the first fight saw Silva’s notorious showmanship backfire, whilst the second fight saw Silva suffer one of the most horrific injuries in the history of MMA, and all of sports.

Can Weidman once and for all beat Silva decisively, or will Silva turn back the clock and finally shine against his perennial rival?

All this action, and a loaded undercard, takes place on Saturday of Week 4 of August in Oklahoma.

Preliminary Card

zN9NnPE.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgYBr2h8y.jpg

Women’s Flyweight: J.J Aldrich (8-4) vs. Polyana Viana(10-4)

The night’s action got off to an exciting start with a quality fight that saw J.J. Aldrich combining head movement and footwork to outclass Polyana Viana, the ending coming after a powerful straight right dropped Viana, with the follow up ground-and-pound finishing her off.

Result: J.J. Aldrich beat Polyana 'Dama de Ferro' Viana by TKO due to strikes in 4:11 of Round 1

0nPM07z.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgtTQxrv5.jpg

Bantamweight: Kwan Ho Kwak (9-2) vs. Pinguyan Liu (15-6)

Primarily using his grappling and ground game, Liu dominated this fight, mixing clinch work and submission attempts, with Kwak unable to offer more than token resistance throughout.

Liu’s post-match interview was surprisingly lively, with the young man showing a lot of charisma.

Result: Pingyuan Liu beat 'Handsome' Kwan Ho Kwak by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

Tl1ym8a.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgkTPJMfI.jpg

Bantamweight: Thomas Almeida (22-3) vs. Johnny Eduardo (28-12)

The first round was fairly even in the stand-up, although the latter half of it saw Eduardo dominate Almeida on the ground, and the second round was equally competitive before a stunning right hook from Almeida dropped Eduard, with Almeida pouncing on Eduard with barrage of punches to get the stoppage.

Almeida used his post-fight interview as a platform to call for a fight with Merab Dvalishvili.

Result: Thomas 'Thominhas' Almeida beat Johnny 'Pretinho' Eduardo by TKO due to strikes in 2:36 of Round 2

G7ogPeE.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgyxIn3MU.jpg

Lightweight: Thibault Gouti (12-5) vs. Michael Quinones (8-3)

Within the first minute, Quinones was dropped and rocked and getting battered, but he held on and managed to survive, although he was dominated for the rest of the round. Quinones was likewise dominated in the second round, and was cut up in the process, putting him well behind heading into the third round of what was a great fight. The third round was more of the same as Gouti was completely dominant.

And then Quinones landed a vicious right cross and dropped Gouti.

Quinones literally jumped on his chance to finish the fight and he unloaded a series of massive right hands, battering Gouti, and he was able to keep this up long enough to force the stoppage and complete an incredible comeback victory.

Result: Michel 'El Capo' Quinones beat Thibault 'GT' Gouti by TKO due to strikes in 3:39 of Round 3

ZuRo2da.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgEBYYKbL.jpg

Light Heavyweight: Devin Clark (11-4) vs. Shamil Gamzatov (14-0)

Despite coming into this fight as the big underdog, it was Gamzatov who was in command for much of this contest, putting his weight advantage to good use at various points. Clark did come on strong in the second round, dominating Gamzatov on the ground, but he couldn’t actually do much damage and it wasn’t enough to overcome Gamzatov’s earlier superiority.

Confidence was not in short supply for Gamzatov in his post-fight interview, as he called out William Knight for his next outing.

Result: Shamil Gamzatov beat Devin 'Brown Bear' Clark by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28 and 29-28)

yDvrOf3.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpghzoPwRB.jpg

Flyweight: Raulian Paiva (19-3) vs. Matt Schnell*(missed weight) (14-5)

Paiva put in a performance that belied his underdog status, Paiva really taking the fight to Schnell and making this a much more competitive affair than the oddsmakers predicted. And it was Paiva who brought the excitement to the fight, with much of Schnell’s control coming by way of smothering Paiva against the cage or on the ground. Despite Paiva’s performance, it was Schnell who took the fight when it went to the judges, although it was a close enough fight that Schnell only won by split decision.

Result: Matt 'Danger' Schnell beat Raulian Paiva by split decision (29-28, 29-28 and 28-29)

LwdyMq3.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgIjJA7cC.jpg

Women’s Bantamweight: Bethe Correia (11-4-1) vs. Sara McMann (12-5)

Sara McMann’s early clinch work was successful but it was a false dawn with Correia quickly pulling guard and then surprising her opponent with an armbar from the guard and securing a quick tap.

Result: Bethe 'Pitbull' Correia beat Sara McMann by submission due to an armbar in 1:51 of Round 1

6FXEhWF.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgzJwMtO6.jpg

Bantamweight: Raphael Assuncao (27-7) vs. Rani Yahya(26-10-1, 1NC)

This was a fight that was contested almost entirely on the ground, both fighters exchanging submission attempts and escapes in a series of engrossing exchanges that also included scrambles and attempts to pass the guard. There was some striking in the latter stages of the third round, but beyond that this was a battle of the ground games. The fight went the distance and, despite the competitive nature of the fight, the scoring was surprisingly one-sided with Assuncao not only winning by unanimous decision, but getting all three rounds on two of the scorecards.

Result: Raphael Assuncao beat Rani Yahya by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 and 30-27)

qlVr18b.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgNf2NBXO.jpg

Welterweight: Abdul Razak Alhassan (10-1) vs. Anthony Martin (17-5)

For as long as this fight lasted, it was pretty exciting, and it ended with great scramble on the mat that saw Martin come out on top and manage to sink in a tight armbar to for the submission from Alhassan.

Result: Anthony 'Rocco' Martin beat 'Judo Thunder' Abdul Razak Alhassan by submission due to an armbar in 2:35 of Round 1

sBcP9OA.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgawr8Gz7.jpg

Featherweight: Arnold Allen (16-1) vs. Darren Elkins (24-8)

For the second straight fight, a mad scramble on the mat ended with a first round submission finish, and this time it was Arnold Allen who was the beneficiary as he pulled off the rarely-seen bulldog choke to elicit a tap from Darren Elkins.

Result: Arnold 'Almighty' Allen beat Darren 'The Damage' Elkins by submission due to a bulldog choke in 2:54 of Round 1

Main Card

yGQbsEP.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpggb48oSM.jpg

Light Heavyweight: Volkan Oezdemir (17-4) vs. Nikita Krylov (26-7)

The first round of this fight saw Krylov get cut right away thanks to a punch, but that didn’t seem to faze Krylov as, a minute later, he dropped Oezdemir with a super head kick. Krylov tried to get the finish with ground-and-pound but Oezdemir offered enough resistance that Krylov began going for an armbar from side-control; he couldn’t get the hold applied, but he did force Oezdemir to sweep which allowed Krylov to take his back, and Oezdemir spent the rest of the round having to fend off a determined effort by Kylov to secure a rear naked choke.

In the second round is when things began to shift because Krylov slowed down over the course of the round, and, thanks to a lot of pressure and clinching against the cage by Oezdemir, Krylov was looking exhausted when the round was over and Oezdemir was firmly in the driver’s seat.

The third round was almost entirely Oezdemir clinching with Krylov, pressing him against the cage, and later controlling him on the ground. However, Oezdemir was tiring himself, and ended up getting mounted by Krylov near the end of the round; but Krylov was too exhausted to put any power in his ground-and-pound and the round and fight came to an end.

The judging reflected the nature of the fight with Oezdemir getting 29-28 on all three scorecards.

Result: Volkan 'No Time' Oezdemir beat Nikita 'The Miner' Krylov by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28 and 29-28)

fRZHXPo.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgd4n6pcI.jpg

Women’s Bantamweight: Irene Aldana (12-5) vs. Julianna Peña (9-3)

As exciting as this fight was for its short duration, it was also fairly one-sided with Aldana effectively walking right through Pena, dropping her with a superb head kick and following up with some ground-and-pound to get the finish.

Result: Irene 'Robles' Aldana beat Julianna 'The Venezuelan Vixen' Pena by TKO due to strikes in 1:21 of Round 1

eBp7fnL.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgsM5s4YF.jpg

Women’s Flyweight: Roxanne Modafferi (21-6) vs. Lauren Murphy (12-4)

Although Roxanne Modafferi gave a good accounting of herself, Lauren Murphy was just that little bit better on this night. It was a competitive stand-up fight, neither fighter looking to take it to the ground, with Murphy was the sharper and more aggressive fighter, and she dropped Modafferi in the second round with a powerful right hook. Murphy then pounded on Modafferi, with one shot finally ending the resistance to leave Modafferi out cold.

Result: Lauren 'The Pirate' Murphy beat Roxanne 'The Happy Warrior' Modafferi by knockout (punch) in 2:59 of Round 2

1F5cng8.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgcgsPL1Q.jpg

Middleweight: Robbie Lawler (28-14, 1NC) vs. Diego Sanchez (30-12)

This was a good fight, albeit somewhat sloppy at times as both fighters seemed to miss just as many shots as they landed. It was the total stand-up fight that most would have expected, with neither fighter making any attempt to take the fight to the ground. The decisive moment came fairly early in the second round when Lawler landed a wicked left uppercut that put Sanchez on rubber legs before ‘Nightmare’ finally fell to the floor. Lawler capitalised with some powerful ground-and-pound to finish the job, with the referee quickly pulling Lawler off of Sanchez to end the fight.

In his post-fight interview, Lawler made an interesting callout as he expressed a desire to face Damian Meia.

Result: 'Ruthless' Robbie Lawler beat Diego 'The Nightmare' Sanchez by TKO due to strikes in 1:44 of Round 2

U9kx95f.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg8b69egQ.jpg

Heavyweight: Junior Dos Santos (21-7) vs. Anthony Johnson (22-6)

It was now time for co-main event of the evening, with Anthony Johnson making his highly anticipated return to the octagon, in his first UFC fight in the heavyweight division, taking on the former champion Junior Dos Santos.

In the pre-fight staredown, it was obvious that Johnson was the much bigger fighter, having at least 35lbs on Dos Santos, and it was speculated on commentary as to what kind of effect this would have on the fight.

Early on, the added weight didn’t appear to be too much of a detriment for Johnson who had the better head movement and was the faster fighter, with Johnson avoiding a lot of what Dos Santos tried to land whilst also landing shots that Dos Santos couldn’t seem to avoid. The pace slowed down a little, which favoured Dos Santos; JDS fell back on his boxing skill to throw a flurry of punches that culminated with a right hook!

Johnson wobbled, clearly hurt by the punch, but he managed to stay upright. Another right hook from Dos Santos finally put Johnson down; JDS quickly knelt beside Johnson and hammered him with a series of punches, one after the other; Johnson was taking punch after punch, offering no defence, and the referee was quick to step and stop the fight, and the former champion had spoiled the comeback of Anthony Johnson and perhaps re-established himself in the heavyweight division.

Result: Junior 'Cigano' dos Santos beat Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson by TKO due to strikes in 2:42 of Round 1

sEK3uwO.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgsOiWMQI.jpg

Welterweight: Michael Chiesa (17-4) vs. Nate Diaz (20-12)

The main event was now upon us, as Nate Diaz appeared in the octagon for the first time since losing out on the ‘BMF’ title to Jorge Masvidal, to take on Michael Chiesa, another former lightweight who was had also found success in the welterweight division.

For the first couple of minutes the fight was all stand-up with both fighters having their share of success. Chiesa then took the fight the ground, taking Diaz down with a single leg. Yet he was unable to deliver any meaningful offence because Diaz, an expert off his back, kept threatening with submissions and positional improvement, forcing Chiesa to remain on the defensive for the rest of the round.

Diaz opened up the second round with a flurry punches that tagged Chiesa; Chiesa responded to this by taking Diaz down to the mat, clearly wanting no part of Diaz’s stand-up game. But Diaz is dangerous on the ground, and Chiesa spend three solid minutes of fending off Diaz’s attempts to secure the rubber guard before stalling the action enough for force the fight to be stood up. With little time left in the round, Chiesa clinched up with Diaz to try and force him back up against the face, perhaps looking to neutralize Diaz, but the Stockton native was able to thwart the attempt and the round ended with Diaz in the driving seat.

The third round followed a similar pattern to the second round; Chiesa faring poorly in the stand-up and responding to that by taking Diaz down to the mat. On commentary, it was pointed out that Chiesa was having problems with Diaz wherever the fight goes. As in the previous round, Chiesa was forced to defend and fend off various submissions, and this time he had to do so while trapped in the rubber guard. When the round ended, it was a very confident Diaz who walked back to his corner, while Chiesa appeared to be totally bewildered by how things were going.

Chiesa had little time to remain bewildered and little time to do much of anything in the fourth round. It took less than thirty seconds for Diaz to land a jab/right cross combination that floored Chiesa. Diaz promptly pounded away on Chiesa, landing several big shots and, with Chiesa offering no defence, the referee had to jump in and stop the fight.

Result: Nate Diaz beat Michael 'Maverick' Chiesa by TKO due to strikes in 0:52 of Round 4

<span style="font-size:18px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Tyron Woodley to headline next ESPN event</span></strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Friday of Week 2 of July 2020</em></p><p> </p><p>

The UFC today announced that their next ESPN special will be headlined by a welterweight collision with a brewing grudge behind it, as Santiago Ponzinibbio will take on Tyron Woodley.</p><p> </p><p>

After defeating Stephen Thompson at UF 249, Ponzinibbio expressed an interest in fighting Woodley and, whilst Woodley was polite in saying that he’d accept the fight if it was offered, it was a only a few days ago that Woodley made a number of remarks disparaging Ponzinibbio, setting in motion the booking of the headline attraction of the UFC’s return to ESPN. </p><p> </p><p>

Woodley’s previous outing saw him defeat Leon Edwards in the main event of a Fight Night from London, so both Woodley and Ponzinibbio will be coming into their encounter on the back of a major victory.</p><p> </p><p>

In the co-main event is a pivotal clash in the middleweight division as Yoel Romero will battle Darren Till, where the winner of this fight could very well put themselves in pole position for a shot at the middleweight title, currently held by Israel Adesanya. </p><p> </p><p>

While Romero has faced Adesanya for the middleweight title before, it was fight where neither Romero nor Adesanya shined, and Romero will be keen to both make amends for his performance and finally claim the middleweight title. For his part, Till was victorious over Derek Brunson at the Fight Night from London, and has a lot of momentum behind him as he hopes to secure his first crack at middleweight gold.</p><p> </p><p>

In the women’s strawweight division, Joanna Jedrzejczyk makes her return to action after her incredible war with Weili Zhang, and she’ll be facing Randa Markos. A win for Jedrzejczyk would keep her primed for a potential rematch with Zhang, while a win for Markos could see her vault her way into contendership consideration.</p><p> </p><p>

Aleksander Doskalchuk will make his UFC debut, and it will be against Zhalgas Zhumagulov. Another strawweight outing sees former champion Jessica Andrade face Cláudia Gadelha in a rematch of their fight from September 2017, a fight which Andrade won by unanimous decision. Andrade, whose last fight was a brutal loss to Rose Namajunas, will be hoping to avoid losing three fights in a row for the first time in her career, while Gadelha is bouncing back from a split decision loss to Tatiana Suarez.</p><p> </p><p>

And the main card opener is a lightweight affair as Gregor Gillespie faces the always-dangerous Rustam Khabilov.</p><p> </p><p>

All this action, and a loaded undercard, takes place on Saturday of Week 1 of September in Illinois.</p><p> </p><p>

UFC Fight Night 176: Brown vs. Oliveira

Date: Saturday of Week 3 of July 2020 Location: Vermont

Attendance: 2,717 Gate: $412,984

Critical Rating: 71%Commercial Rating: 72%

Commentary Team: Jon Anik, Dan Hardy and Brendan Fitzgerald

Preliminary Card

zJ3T7Bn.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgvxT9hVd.jpg

Bantamweight: Said Nurmagomedov (14-2) vs. Ricky Simon (15-3)

Although neither fighter had perfect accuracy with their strikes, Simon was a little more precise, and, early on, he opened up a cut just above the hairline of Nurmagomedov. It gave Nurmagomedov enough trouble that the referee paused the fight for the ringside doctor to take a look, and the doctor ruled Nurmagomedov unable to continue due to the positioning and severity of the cut.

In his post-fight interview, Simon said that, whilst he was happy to have won, a victory in this manner is no way to win a fight.

Result: Ricky Simon beat Said Nurmagomedov by TKO due to a cut in 3:08 of Round 1

Vmoe6DD.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg3VvdIUB.jpg

Women’s Flyweight: Maycee Barber (8-1) vs. Wu Yanan (10-3)

This was a fairly good, competitive fight, one with a very simple story; if it was standing, Wu was dominant, but on the ground, it was Barber was dictating things. Wu won the first round with her stand-up, but Barber was able to get her clinching and ground going in the second and third rounds, controlling the action, although not always being that active, and doing enough to take the rounds on the scorecards and getting the unanimous decision victory.

Despite giving a somewhat generic interview, Barber still showed star power and charisma and she made a good impression.

Result: Maycee 'The Future' Barber beat Wu Yanan by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28 and 29-28)

JWzUYy0.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgMZwJjQ8.jpg

Women’s Flyweight: Poliana Botelho (8-2) vs. Sabina Mazo (8-0)

Although this was a decent fight, there was little excitement for the casual fan due to Mazo’s strategy of using clinch work to control and smother Botelho, which, whilst effective, gave fans not much to cheer for.

Even with a rather uneventful victory, Mazo handled herself well in her post-fight interview and came off strong.

Result: Sabina 'Colombian Queen' Mazo beat Poliana Botelho by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27 and 30-27)

XIJFSyn.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgHLDsna4.jpg

Light Heavyweight: Dalcha Lungiambula (10-2) vs. Marcin Prachnio (13-4)

Prachnio completely dominated Lungiambula for as long as this fight lasted, landing seemingly at will before a superb right high kick knocked Lungiambula out cold.

Prachnio acknowledged his underdog status in his post-fight interview, but he said that he always believed himself and he was confident that he had what it took to win.

Result: Marcin Prachnio beat Dalcha 'Champion' Lungiambula by knockout (kick) in 3:10 of Round 1

dqOd8Eh.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgBbOFhyl.jpg

Lightweight: Drew Dober (22-9, 1 NC) vs. James Vick (13-5)

This fight was good for as long as it lasted, but didn’t last long, though; Vick needed little over a minute to stun Dober with a right high kick before getting a hold of his opponent and knocking him out with a knee to the face.

Vick’s call-out of Anthony Pettis in his post-fight was not an eyebrow raiser in itself, but people did take note of Vick’s claim that he doubted Pettis would have the guts to accept the challenger. It’s not often you see anyone doubt the courage of ‘Showtime’.

Result: 'The Texecutioner' James Vick beat Drew Dober by knockout (knee) in 1:31 of Round 1

Iv9mkQk.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgyY5quhb.jpg

Heavyweight: Jeff Hughes (10-3, 1 NC) vs. Ben Sosoli (7-3, 2 NC)

This was another fight that wasn’t bad but also didn’t light anyone’s world on fire. Sosoli dominated the fight throughout, both on the ground and standing up. Hughes’ didn’t do much to suggest he was ever in this fight, so it was a big surprise that Sosoli only won by majority decision, as one judge somehow ruled the fight a draw.

This was something that Sosoli had no hesitation in bringing up in his post-fight interview, openly wondering how anyone could have scored the fight a draw, Sosoli also saying he was disappointed in not getting the unanimous decision.

Result: Ben 'Combat Wombat' Sosoli beat 'Lights Out' Jeff Hughes by majority decision (29-28, 30-27 and 29-29)

r0egiLn.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgChsNJB0.jpg

Welterweight: Dhiego Lima (15-7) vs. Jake Matthews (16-4)

In what followed the pattern set by earlier fights, this was a fight that was decent but involved little to get excited about, with one fighter comfortably dominating the other. In this case, Matthews dominated Lima, and the only real excitement, such as it was, came early in the third round when Lima hit Matthews with a jab that opened up a cut on Matthews’ forehead.

Result: 'The Celtic Kid' Jake Matthews beat Dhiego Lima by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 and 30-27)

Dqgz0u5.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpghI2zOX3.jpg

Heavyweight: Greg Hardy (5-2, 1 NC) vs. Chi Lewis- Parry (8-0)

Hardy came into this fight as the bigger fighter, having at least 30lbs on Lewis-Parry, but that advantage proved to be of no advantage once he took Lewis-Parry down because Lewis-Parry immediately threw up his legs for a triangle choke, and he got the hold in deep and Hardy was forced to tap out.

Result: Chi 'Chopper' Lewis-Parry beat Greg Hardy by submission due to a triangle choke in 3:48 of Round 1

qd7fkHA.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgcbBTauy.jpg

Women’s Strawweight: Alexa Grasso (11-3) vs. Angela Hill (12-7)

Combining a constant pace of action and a mixture of boxing and kickboxing, Hill methodically and systematically outworked Grasso for the entirety of this fight, and eased to a unanimous decision victory.

Never one to let the spotlight go to waste, Hill used her interview time to call for a fight with Yan Xiaonan.

Result: Angela 'Overkill' Hill beat Alexa Grasso by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

XFnQsxw.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgI2LdRb0.jpg

Middleweight: Andre Muniz (19-4) vs. Bruno Silva (19-6)

The Muay Thai training of Muniz was the decider on this one; once he got hold of Silva, his opponent was in trouble, and a precision vicious knee strike was all it took to knock Silva out and he crumpled into a heap on the ground.

Result: 'Sergipano' Andre Muniz beat Bruno 'Blindado' Silva by knockout (knee) in 2:35 of Round 1

Main Card

IsuUsng.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgVemuyjl.jpg

Women’s Flyweight: Alexis Davis (19-10) vs. Jessica Eye (15-7, 1NC)

Eye put in a solid workman...workwomanlike performance to dominate Alexis Davis for much of this fight’s duration. Eye was too quick with her head movement and too precise with her striking for Davis to handle. Davis’s only moments of success came in the second round when, for about a minute, she had Eye pressed up against the fence and worked her over with dirty boxing. Other than that, this fight was all Jessica Eye,

Perhaps buoyed on by her performance, Eye called out the UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion, Valentina Shevchenko, which, as noted on commentary, was quite the declaration considering their previous meeting ended with Eye the victim of one of the most brutal knocks out of all time.

Result: Jessica 'Evil' Eye beat 'Ally-Gator' Alexis Davis by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

6gRBhQK.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgQ7XKTgF.jpg

Women’s Bantamweight: Aspen Ladd (9-1) vs. Ketlen Viera (10-1)

In the first round, Ladd was able to thwart Viera’s initial attempts to take her down with a judo throw, Ladd then responding with some great strikes, both punches and kicks, that lit Viera up. Viera was eventually to take Ladd down with a judo throw, although she couldn’t do much as Ladd was successfully able to neutralise her. The second round was barely able to develop before a right head kick from Ladd had Viera on rubbery legs, with a big right hand putting her down. The requisite ground-and-pound followed and Ladd was landing some powerful shots that forced the referee to intercede and stop the fight.

Although she wasn’t the best of talkers in her post-fight interview, Ladd was extremely photogenic and came off as someone special.

Result: Aspen Ladd beat Ketlen 'Fenomeno' Vieira by TKO due to strikes in 0:54 of Round 2

K1Blzq8.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg40WD6Sf.jpg

Middleweight: Jack Hermansson (20-5) vs. Andrew Sanchez (11-5)

Hermansson survived a scare early in the first round, getting wobbled by a hard right hand, to come back with a strong output for the remainder of the stanza, Hermansson perhaps aware that he needed something like that to offset the visual of being on shaky feet. Sanchez was the one who came on the strongest in the second round, working very hard to get back into the fight, which he did, so it was looking tied heading into the third round. The third round was equally competitive; Sanchez landed some good shots and bloodied up Hermansson, who responded by muscling Sanchez up against the fence and controlling him there for quite a while.

It was a hard-fought contest, very engaging, and it seemed like it could go either way, which was played out in the scoring as it went to Hermansson but only by split-decision.

Hermansson’s post-fight interview was a good one, the Swede proving himself to be a capable talker.

Result: Jack 'The Joker' Hermansson beat Andrew 'El Dirte' Sanchez by split decision (29-28, 29-28 and 28-29)

B96hDHv.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgDuWob2h.jpg

Featherweight: Cub Swanson (26-11) vs. Sodiq Yusuff (14-1)

Next up was a strong contender for Fight of the Night, with the co-main event of the evening. It was a fight that saw Sodiq Yussuf come in as a relative unknown, and emerge with something of name, as he put in a great performance against the resilient and tough Cub Swanson.

Yussuf was always coming forward, always applying pressure to Swanson and setting a pace that Swanson had real problems dealing with. Even with Yussuf somewhat slowing down in the second round, allowing Swanson to land some good shots that Yussuf dealt well with, it wasn’t enough to stop Yussuf from dominating the action. In the third round, Yussuf slowed down even more, the pace finally taking its toll on his stamina, but even then he was still too quick for Swanson to adequately deal with, and as the round ended, Yussuf raised his arms in triumph, knowing that he had put in the best performance of his career.

To no surprise whatsoever, Yussuf took the fight by unanimous decision, winning all three rounds on all three scorecards. Yussuf complemented his fight performance with a post-fight interview that showed he can sell himself as well as a he can fight, and it seemed like Yussuf is a star in the making.

Result: 'Super' Sodiq Yusuff beat Cub Swanson by unanimous decision (30-37, 30-27 and 30-27)

Ix62TVA.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgSipxJFK.jpg

Welterweight: Matt Brown (22-16) vs. (22-16) Alex Oliveira (20-8-1, 2NC)

The main event was upon us, and the fans were ready for it as they were expecting a real banger, which is exactly what they got. For the duration of the fight, Brown and Oliveira were both fairly aggressive, coming forward with strong punches and kicks, yet always mindful of what was coming back in return. Each fighter landed their share of good shots that were bound to leave a mark, so it was hard to gauge who won the first round, but Oliveira’s head movement may have just about swung it in his favour.

The second round followed a very similar pattern to the first, with both fighters consistently coming forward, fighting aggressively, with defensive tactics seemingly the furthest thing from their minds. By the midway point of the round, such an approach was starting to take a toll on the stamina of both men and their pace slowed down a little. But it wasn’t long after this that the fight came to a sudden and abrupt end, when Brown surprised Oliveira with stiff head kick that dropped the ‘Cowboy’. Taking his chance, Brown went for the finish, unloading on Oliveira with some powerful shots that gave the referee no choice but to stop the fight.

Result: 'The Immortal' Matt Brown beat Alex 'Cowboy' Oliveira by TKO due to strikes in 3:16 of Round 2

‘The Stun Gun’ to headline UFC’s return to Asia

Saturday of Week 3 of July 2020

The UFC returns to Asia for their next Fight Night, and the headline attraction will see the area’s most popular fighter, ‘The Stun Gun’ Dong Hyun Kim take on Russian standout Alexey Kunchenko.

The always-dangerous Kim is returning home off the back of a decisive knockout win over former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, whilst Kunchenko’s last fight saw him neutralize Bryan Barbarena en route to a second round TKO victory, so the main event is sure to be an explosive encounter.

Another popular fighter, ‘The Korean Superboy’ Doo Ho Choi, looks to build on the momentum of a dominant win over Alex Caceras when he faces Enrique Barzola, who is determined to bounce back from a close lose to Nathanial Wood. Kyung Ho Kang goes up against Vince Morales, with Morales last outing seeing him finish Tim Elliot in the first round.

Ben Askren makes his eagerly awaited return to action, but he won’t have it easy because his opponent is the very dangerous Gilbert Burns. Montana de la Rosa, after a comprehensive win over Antonina Shevchenko, faces Lauren Murphy, whose own previous win was also emphatic, as she knocked out Roxanne Modafferi. And the main card kicks off with the returning Bec Rawlings taking on Hannah Cifers.

All this action, and a loaded undercard, takes place on Saturday of Week 2 of September in East Asia.

The third round saw Garbrandt finally able to defend against being taken down, but he did end up being pressed up against the cage, where both fighters spent an extended period exchanging punches before being separated by the referee. As the round was winding down and Garbrandt was noticeably tiring, but he kept throwing out strikes in such a way that Cejudo was unable to get close enough to take advantage of it, and the rounded ended with seemingly nothing settled.</span></em></p><p><em><span style="font-family:'Palatino Linotype';"> </span></em></p><p><em><span style="font-family:'Palatino Linotype';">

Things were surprisingly definitive in the eyes of the judges, as all three scored it 29-28 for Cody Garbrandt, who took over his post-fight interview by grabbing the mic from the interviewer and demanding a fight with Aljamain Sterling, the fighter who is currently the top contender for the title that Garbrandt once held.</span></em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em>

</em><em><span style="font-family:'Palatino Linotype';">Our first title fight of the evening saw Rose Namajunas looking to regain the title she lost in spectacular fashion, from a champion who was coming off one of the greatest fights in the history of MMA. Going into this fight, there was great interest in what kind of Weili Zhang we’d see, with speculation some quarters over whether or not her war with Joanna Jedrzejczyk would take a long-term toll on the champion.</span></em></p><p><em><span style="font-family:'Palatino Linotype';"> </span></em></p><p><em><span style="font-family:'Palatino Linotype';">

Weili pounced, sensing the finish was nigh, and a series of heavy shots brutalized Namajunas, the challenger taking such a pounding that the referee had to call things off, and Weili Zhang had retained her title with a first-round finish of Rose Namajunas, a performance that showed the world that Weili Zhang is the most dangerous strawweight in the sport today.</span></em></p><p><em><span style="font-family:'Palatino Linotype';"> </span></em></p><p><em><span style="font-family:'Palatino Linotype';">

Gastelum vs. Souza II to headline next Fight Night

Gastelum vs. Souza II to headline next Fight Night

Saturday of Week 4 of July 2020

The UFC today announced their return to Tennessee, and the ‘Volunteer State’ will play host to a big rematch in the middleweight division as TUF 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum will tangle once more with submission master Ronaldo Souza.

Gastelum and Souza first clashed back at UFC 224, in a hard-fought contest that saw Gastelum emerge victorious by split-decision. Souza has been waiting over two years to avenge the close loss, and now he’ll have that chance when the UFC octagon touches down in Tennessee. Yet he’ll be facing an opponent coming off a major victory, a knockout win over former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, and another win, and a definitive one, for Gastelum could be enough for him to gain another crack at middleweight gold.

In the co-main event, veteran featherweights Mirsad Bektic and Jeremy Stephens will collide in a fight that is sure to bring the fireworks. Lina Lansberg and Raquel Pennington fight to rise up the ranks in the women’s bantamweight division. Former strawweight champion Carla Esparza continues her quest towards reclaiming the gold when she takes on the controversial Felice Herrig.

In what could provide a highlight reel finish, Ion Cutelaba will face Tyson Pedro, and the main card kicks off with the British standout Leon Edwards looking to get back to winning ways when he faces the tough James Krause.

All this, and a loaded preliminary card, takes place on Saturday of Week 3 of September in Tennessee.

Zombie faces challenge of (the) Blessed

Zombie faces challenge of (the) Blessed

Saturday of Week 4 of July 2020

The UFC returns north of the border as they head for Quebec for their next pay-per-view spectacular, as UFC 254, titled Featherweight Fury, will see ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jun defend the UFC Featherweight Championship against a former champion, Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway.

Chan Sung Jun delivered the stunning upset at UFC 249 when he submitted Alexander Volkonovski in the first round to claim the featherweight championship, and he won’t have it easy in his first title defence when he takes on Max Holloway. Holloway, who lost the featherweight title to Volkonovski, rebounded in grand fashion, in a fight that also took place at UFC 249, when he stopped Zabit Magomedsharipov in less than one minute.

Now, ‘Blessed’ has the chance to regain the featherweight crown, but it will be a tough task to wrest the title from a champion with so much momentum behind him.

The former featherweight Alexander Volkonovski has his own chance to rebound at UC 254, yet he too will have a tough challenge ahead of him, because he must take on former lightweight champion, and future UFC Hall of Famer, Frankie Edgar. Edgar is coming off fights against both of the headliners, and with Edgar having lost both encounters, ‘The Answer’ has his back against the wall and finds himself in a position where victory is essential if he is keep himself a relevant force in the featherweight division.

Similarly, Francis Ngannou saw his string of first-round victories come to an end in his last outing when he was submitted by Aleksei Oleinik, and he must halt the downward momentum before it has a chance to build when he goes up against Alexander Volkov. But Volkov has a lot of upward momentum behind him, having won seven of his last eight fights, and a win over the touted Cameroonian could put Volkov within reach of the chance to fight for a heavyweight title shot.

A pivotal clash in the women’s strawweight division pits Cynthia Calvillo against the unbeaten Tatiana Suarez, and it is widely believed that the victor of this showdown will earn themselves a shot at the strawweight championship.

In the bantamweight division, Cody Stamann meets Petr Yan, and the main card opens up in the light heavyweight division, with a fight that could start the PPV off on an explosive note as Paul Craig goes toe-to-toe with Nikita Krylov.

This great night of action, which includes a packed preliminary card, takes place on Saturday of Week 4 of September in Quebec.

Benavidez vs. Figueiredo II to headline UFC’s return to Wyoming

Benavidez vs. Figueiredo II to headline UFC’s return to Wyoming

Saturday of Week 1 of August 2020

The UFC’s long-awaited return to Wyoming will be headlined by a major rematch in the flyweight division, as Joseph Benavidez takes on Deiveson Figueiredo in the main event of the latest UFC Fight Night.

Benavidez and Figueiredo first met back in February for the vacant UFC Flyweight Championship, and, whilst Figueiredo came out the winner, he did not walk away with the gold because he missed championship weight, and was therefore ineligible to win the title. This time, both fighters are looking to emerge with an undisputed victory, one that leaves no doubt as to who the better man is.

In the co-main event, featherweight action sees Shane Burgos face Yair Rodriguez. Burgos and Rodriguez are coming off impressive first-round victories, over Josh Emmett and Brian Ortega respectively, and a similar such outcome for either fighter here would likely propel them up the featherweight ladder.

In the bantamweight division, John Dodson meets Eddie Wineland. These two men last fought on the same card, UFC Fight Night 175, where they both won their respective fights, with both men winning by unanimous decision. Will they be able to differentiate themselves from each other when they meet in the Octagon?

A potentially bruising heavyweight fight will put Curtis Blaydes against Sergey Pavlovich; both men are coming off brutal first-round finishes, and another one could be on the cards when they clash. In the women’s strawweight division, Nina Ansaroff battles Marina Rodriguez, and, in the opening fight of the main card, Leah Letson welcomes Japanese fighter Reina Miura to the UFC.

All this, and loaded preliminary card, take place on Saturday of Week 1 of October in Wyoming.

Women’s Strawweight: Virna Jandiroba (16-1) vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz (12-6)

If people didn’t know who Virna Jandiroba was before, they did after this fight because she dominated and put something of a beating on former title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Jandiroba controlled Kowalkiewicz with clinchwork that Kowalkiewicz could do little about; Kowalkiewicz was kept pressed up against the cage for extended periods, with Jandiroba working her over with knees to the ribs and other short strikes all over the body that left Kowalkiewicz really beaten up.

Kowalkiewicz did open up on Jandiroba’s forehead in the second round, but Kowalkiewicz found herself getting busted open in the third, and the Pole had nothing else to offer that troubled her opponent.

Result: Virna 'Carcara' Jandiroba beat Karolina Kowalkiewicz by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

fE69xet.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg54VR6Eo.jpg

Women’s Flyweight: Shana Dobson (4-4) vs. Emily Whitmire (4-3)

Don’t let the judges scoring fool you; Emily Whitmire offered little to trouble Shana Dobson in this contest. Dobson dominated the first two rounds with some great striking, Dobson dropping her opponent once in each round. Whitmire did win the third round, but she simply held Dobson against the cage for most of the round, and delivered very little actual damage.

Result: Shana 'Danger' Dobson beat Emily 'Spitfire' Whitmire by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28 and 29-28)

LRQYTGN.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgDQjm97q.jpg

Women’s Bantamweight: Liana Jouja (7-3) vs. Pannie Kianzad (12-6)

Pannie Kianzad opened up her opponent inside of thirty seconds, and that told the tale of this fight, with Kianzad outstriking her opponent throughout the fight and deftly avoiding most of what Jojua came back with. Jouja did manage to get Kianzad pushed back up against the cage, but that was almost for nothing because the referee took the chance, when the action slowed, to pause the action and have the ringside doctor check on the severity of the cut that had been inflicted on her earlier in the fight.

Result: Pannie 'Banzai' Kianzad beat Liana 'Mgeli' Jojua by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

eQ3E1mh.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgUuYxCmv.jpg

Bantamweight: Rob Font (17-4) vs. Marlon Vera (17-5-1)

After thwarting an early takedown attempted, Font got the better of the subsequent striking exchange, dropping Vera with a crunching straight right to the jaw; in the follow up barrage, one of the punches saw Vera go limp, and the referee quickly stopped the fight before any more damage could be delivered.

Result: Rob Font beat Marlon 'Chito' Vera by knockout (punch) in 1:10 of Round 1

gkczl9l.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgQGmIAxP.jpg

Featherweight: Spike Carlyle (9-1) vs. Youssef Zalal (8-1)

After a fairy even few minutes, Carlyle avoided a left hand from Zalal and countered with a powerful right hook that wobbled his opponent, who quickly stumbled and fell to the mat, Carlyle quickly following up with a series of big shots that forced the stoppage.

Result:Spike 'The Alpha Ginger' Carlyle beat Youssef 'The Moroccan Devil' Zalal by TKO due to strikes in 2:34 of Round 1

DIKZctt.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgTyhys8P.jpg

Lightweight: Michael Johnson (19-15) vs. Jim Miller (31-15, 1 NC)

Michael Johnson’s aggressiveness was key in this fight, as it seemed to put Jim Miller off his game; Miller was frequently missing shots and then getting tagged as a result. Johnson dropped Miller in the second round, and came close to finishing him off but Miller held on, literally, to see the round out. Johnson, however, would not let Miller off the hook the next time he hit home, as this time Johnson landed a fantastic left cross that knocked Miller out cold.

Result: Michael 'The Menace' Johnson beat Jim Miller by knockout (punch) in 2:07 of Round 3

7wttAxL.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgDD4p09e.jpg

Welterweight: Vicente Luque (17-7-1) vs. Sean Strickland ()

Coming in as a replacement fighter, Sean Strickland fought like someone with something to prove, and he proved his mettle by taking the fight to Vincent Luque in the first round, controlling him on the round and totally shutting his opponent down. Unfortunately for Strickland that was a good as it got for him as he was on the defensive for the rest of the fight, Strickland finally getting stopped early in the third when he was dropped right away and then finished with some ground-and-pound.

Result: Vicente 'Silent Assassin' Luque beat Sean 'Tarzan' Strickland by TKO due to strikes in 0:34 of Round 3

GxAk7Ua.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgYyPbF5U.jpg

Middleweight: Karl Roberson (9-2) vs. Punahele Sorianpo (7-0)

This was a decent fight, one that Soriano dominated with clinching and grappling, with Roberson doing little to trouble his opponent.

Result: Punahele 'Story Time' Soriano beat Karl 'Baby K' Roberson by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28 and 30-27)

OKg3WOm.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgSfEsUwY.jpg

Light Heavyweight: Modestas Bakauskas (10-2) vs. Alonzo Menifield (9-0)

Modestas Bukauskas came into the cage with a noticeable size advantage over Alonzo Menifield, but the superior size wasn’t enough to win out over a faster and better conditioned opponent. Early in the second round, Menifield dropped Bukauskas with a straight right that landed cleanly, and when Bukauskas survived the resultant ground-and-pound, Menifield began working for submissions; Bukauskas almost made it to the end of the round before falling victim to a kimura.

Result: Alonzo Menifield beat Modestas Bukauskas by submission due to a kimura in 4:42 of Round 2

xfZ6AsY.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg6u2KBLm.jpg

Heavyweight: Shamil Abdurakhimov (21-5) vs. Andrei Arlovski (28-19, 2NC)

In a battle of experienced heavyweights, both fighters showcased their striking skills and were able to show that they were each still a threat. But it would be Abdurakhimov who walk away the winner, dropping Arlovski with a powerful right hook and then getting the stoppage with some brutal ground-and-pound.

Result: Shamil 'Abrek' Abdurakhimov beat Andrei 'The Pitbull' Arlovski by TKO due to strikes in 4:22 of Round 1

Main Card

Welterweight: Alan Jouban (16-7) vs. Alex Morono (17-6, 1NC)

The main card got off to a decent start with Alex Morono staying patient in the first round and choosing to play counterfighter, responding to the attacks of Jouban instead of initiating anything, and gauging his opponent. This strategy paid dividends in the second round as Jouban was tired enough that Morono took him to the mat with a ease with an outside legtrip, Morono then effortlessly transitioning into a kimura for the tap.

Result: Alex 'The Great White' Morono beat Alan 'Brahma' Jouban by submission due to a kimura in 2:21 of Round 2

1r7G1dm.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgSnIs5y1.jpg

Lightweight: Drakkar Klose (12-2-1) vs. Arman Tsarukyan (15-2)

The first round wasn’t that exciting as it mostly consisted of Klose smothering Tsarukyan and doing little with it. The second round was similar, only with Klose smothering Tsarukyan against the cage, although there was some action when Klose slammed Tsarukyan to the mat; Tsarukyan forced a scramble to escape, but Klose was able to take back control. In the third round there was more grappling and scrambling, and it was looking like we’d see the fight out, but late on Tsarukyan, after glancing at the clock, landed a beautiful fight uppercut that knocked Klose out cold.

Result: Arman Tsarukyan beat Drakkar by knockout (punch) in 4:44 of Round 3

GFZbRmj.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgqlwtMNO.jpg

Women’s Bantamweight: Julia Avila (7-1) vs. Macy Chiasson (6-1)

Macy Chiasson was the dominant fighter in an encounter where it seemed like her opponent just couldn’t string anything together. Julia Avila definitely had her moments, but they were just moments, with Chiasson controlling the bulk of the action en route to dropping and then stopping Avila in the second round.

Result: Macy Chiasson beat Julia 'Raging Panda' Avila by TKO due to strikes in 2:03 of Round 2

6BsSL1I.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgqKtDZp4.jpg

Women’s Strawweight: Amanda Bobby Cooper (4-5) vs. Syuri Kondo (7-3)

This was a good fight, an all-action affair that was competitive, although Kondo did land the more significant blows throughout the fight. Kondo rocked Cooper in the second and third rounds, and a little more aggressiveness may have allowed her to win the fight right there. But Cooper wasn’t able to take advantage of these lapses from her opponent; she never troubled Kondo the way Kondo troubled her. And so it wasn’t too much of a surprise that, when the fight went the distance and we heard from the judges, Kondo won all three rounds on all three scorecards.

Result: Syuri Kondo beat Amanda 'ABC' Bobby Cooper by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

ztCOmD7.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgQdusEpx.jpg

Heavyweight: Juan Espino (10-1) vs. Ciryl Gane (7-0)

Ciryl Gane served notice to the heavyweight division with a stunning 11 second knockout of Juan Espino. Gane landed the first serious punch he threw, a beautiful right uppercut, and it knocked Espino out cold, leaving the fans cheering wildly for this unexpected turn of events and Gane celebrating the most decisive of victories.

Result: Ciryl 'Bon Gamin' Gane beat Juan 'El Guapo' Espino by Knockout (punch) in 0:11 of Round 1

m18RLm2.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg51zSpW8.jpg

Light Heavyweight: Sam Alvey (34-13, 1NC) vs. Maurico Rua (26-11-1)

The former PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix Champion and UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Mauricio Rua, continued his remarkable resurgence with a tremendous performance against Sam Alvey. It took Rua a little over a minute to put Alvey away, during which time Rua showcased some sharp boxing skills. The end came after a vicious right cross saw Alvey wobble, stumble and then fall, and Rua moved in for the kill, landing some sickening shots to the face of Alvey that forced the referee to step in and stop the fight.

Result: Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua beat 'Smile'n' Sam Alvey by TKO due to strikes in 1:25 of Round 1

Post-Fight Bonuses

Dos Santos vs. Latifi to headline October Fight Night

Dos Santos vs. Latifi to headline October Fight Night

Sunday of Week 2 of August 2020

The UFC goes to North Dakota in October for a Fight Night that will be headlined by a heavyweight collision between the heavy-handed Junior Dos Santos and one of the top grapplers in the heavyweight division, Ilir Latifi. Dos Santos is hoping to put together one more run at the heavyweight title and a win over Ilir Latifi would put him in good stead to continue that run. But Latifi is trying to put together his own run at the heavyweight title, and defeating the former heavyweight kingpin would undoubtedly propel him up the heavyweight rankings, so there will be a lot on the line in the main event of UFC Fight Night 181.

In the co-main event, welterweights do battle when Erik Koch faces Niko Price. Koch comes into this fight off a dominant unanimous decision win over Alberto Mina, yet Price arrives on the back of a destructive first-round win over Warrley Alves, so we’re sure to get fireworks when these two clash in the cage.

In the women’s flyweight division, rising stalwarts J.J Aldrich and Ji Yeon Kim go head-on in a fight that will see the winner rise further up the rankings, with the loser left rueing a missed opportunity. Askar Askarov welcomes Eric Shelton back to the UFC in what could be a very interesting fight, with Shelton no doubt looking to prove that he has learned a lot since his time away from the biggest stage in the sport, and Askarov wanting to spoil the homecoming of his opponent.

Marc-Andre Barriault takes on Deron Winn, and the main card kicks off with a middleweight contest pitting Eden Shahbazyan against Gerald Meerschert.

All this, and a packed undercard that includes the UFC return of Brandon Thatch and a top featherweight outing featuring Zabit Magomedsharipov meeting Brian Ortega, takes place on Saturday of Week 2 of October in North Dakota.
