Event posts will be a mixture of both fight play-by-plays as well as quick bullet points to summarize the event as a whole, only key fights like the fight of the night or fights, the performance of the night as well as fights that have a lot of significance like the main event, co-main, or key bout on the main-card or prelims will be covered. These play by plays are romanticized for dramatic effect but the results are legitimate, if the play-by-plays are too long or you don’t feel like reading them I’ll have a more brief summary of what happened plus the full card results at the bottom.</div><p></p><p>

</p><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Former Flyweight champion Micco Montano will make her first appearance since December 2017 when she won the inaugural Flyweight championship belt but due to a slew of injuries, the UFC stripped Montano after she failed to face Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 228 (September 2018). To the dismay of the former champ, she didn’t get a call or text from UFC higher-ups but was informed by an Ariel Helwai tweet that she was stripped which she called “one of the most disrespectful things someone has ever done to me in my life”. Since losing her title Montano has been training with one goal in mind to regain her championship and hopefully embarrass the newly crowned champion Valentina Shevchenko in the process to quote her coaches, “she thinks about not only beating [Valentina] Shevechenko but embarrassing her she wants to dominate her then finish her with 1 second left on the clock and that’s a reality we going to make happen it’s not just some wishful thinking it’ll happen”. First, she has to get past Liz Carmouche an always game durable muay-thai fighter who looks to make a splash on her to a title shot in a new weight class.</em></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The former champ Nicco Montano gets a huge roar from her hometown fans in Arinoza there hungry for a hometown winner here tonight. Carmouche presses forward looking to strike pressuring Montano up near the cage as she tries to circle to the right. Carmouche hits a set-in jab as well as a crunching right hook to the chin while coming, Carmouche grabs a hold of Montano looking to push her to the cage but Montano excellently ducks grabbing the body lock to get a quick takedown while Carmouche was rushing in. Despite Montano being on top she can’t seem to get out of half-guard as Carmouche is doing some brilliant defense on her back, the former champion is able to get a few minor elbows to the head but the majority of the groundwork is pretty lackluster with no much going on. Referee Mark Smith stands the two up after two minutes on the ground. Montano is off the mark with a jab but her follow-up straight lands cleanly with a leg kick landing as well. The two stand and trade but both are mostly their blocking of parrying each other strikes until the last couple of seconds of the round as Carmouche is able to split the guard of Montano with a jab then two hooks to the body with a third hook transitioning to the head as time expires. </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Carmouche has found her jab constantly using it while Montano is trying to find the range to fire off strikes to get the takedown. Now that Carmouche has found the jab she now finds her straight right as the ‘Girl-Rilla’ is constantly landing the one-two to the chin of Montano as the former champ can’t seem to get anything off. A sense of desperation sets in as Montano dives from fa out of range for a single leg that Carmouche easily defends but pushing Montano’s head down then gets her leg free. Now it’s one-twos followed by an overhand that constantly lands for Carmouche as she starts pushing the pace, Carmouche starts flurrying with 4 to 6 hooks every time she sets up with the one-two almost every time now landing at a 75%+ clip. Montano’s nose is bleeding blady now with her right eye nearly being closed shut as well as a lot of swelling around her left eye too. One minute left Carmouche lands a hard stiff jab that pushes Montano against the cage follows it with two hooks to the body then an uppercut lands right on the nose!!! Carmouche keeps up the flurry of strikes a one-two followed by a cross lands!!! Following it up with a double-jab then another uppercut!!! Now Carmouche is throwing wild looping hooks until the round ends!!! </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

After taking a beating the doctors are taking a look at Montano giving the green light that she can continue, commentator Daniel Cormier says her corner “needs to stop this fight right now, look at her breathing hard blood is all over her chin her nose won’t stop bleeding both her eyes are nearly shut she hasn’t landed a punch for 2 minutes now”. </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Carmouche misses on the jab allowing Montano to clinch up with her but due to the beating, she has taken she doesn’t seem to have the strength to outwrestle Carmouche who grabs the collar tie unloading with more uppercuts to the chin of Montano. As the two separate one last quick uppercut from Carmouche lands directly under the chin that puts Montano down!!! Carmouche grabs side-control landing ruthless elbows in the process, instead of going for the TKO finish, Carmouche grabs the kimura submission in which Montano taps almost immediately!!! </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The two exchange throwing combinations Swanson is the first to land with a jab then ducking hook but 2 follow-up hooks miss due to Johnson slipping right countering with 3 straight punches. The two exchange left hands Swanson covers up while Johnson keeps coming forward with intent scoring with 4 out of 5 flurries of hooks then finishing it off with a solid straight right to the forehead. Johnson manages to dodge the push kick to the body by slipping to the right then landing a clean one-two on the chin but Swanson is able to land a nice right hook to the ribs after feinting that he was going with the hooks up top. But Johnson again flurries with hooks landing 3 out of 5 of them one clips his right on the chin buckling him a hit allowing Johnson to furry again with hooks landing 3 out of 5 again then an overhand just clip the side of Swanson’s dome!!! Swanson again lands a hook to the ribs after feinting a hook to the head but can’t follow up with more strikes as Johnson continues to show his superior speed by quicking blitzing in with a one-two then furries with 5 hooks landing 4 of them. Swanson while backing up is able to land a roundhouse kick to the body but is now getting stalked constantly by Johnson who is pressuring him intensely!!! Johnson flurries again with hooks landing 2 out 5 as Swanson starts implementing some head movement in which he is able to counter with a jab then roundhouse kick after slipping past the 5th hook of ‘The Meance’. Johnson starts slowing down a little sticking to straight punches in the last minute of the round connecting with some good jabs and left hands while Swanson keeps digging to the body with right hooks. Last few seconds of the round Swanson feints the right hook to the body which Johnson bites on hard as he doesn’t see the lighting fast left hook of Cub Swanson that puts Johnson down hard!!! But as he falls the horn sounds signaling the end of the round!!! Literally saved by the horn wow!!!</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Swanson comes out landing hard shots starting with a one-two then right hook to the body followed by a left hook to the head Johnson starts covering up backing off to the cage he still looks severely dazed!!! Johnson eats a left and right hook then a knee to the face as he is going down Swanson tries to land a huge looping right hook but somehow Johnson recovers picking himself up with one hand doges then loop hook by moving backs then use his footwork by circling right to the center of the octagon. Swanson continues pushing down Johnson landing three straight jabs then a right hook to the body but Johnson slips a left hook from Swanson seeing an opening for a split second Johnson cocks back then blasts Swanson with an overhand!!! Before Swanson can cover up Johnson blats him with three straight punches then a right cross puts him down!!! Johnson kneels down right beside him raining down hammer fists until referee Jason Herzog pulls him off!!! </p><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Dominick Cruz looks to make another run at the Bantamweight title in hopes of becoming a 3-time champion to cement his status as “the greatest Bantamweight of all time” that many have dubbed him although recently that status has been slowly pulled out from under him with the current Bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw. Although ‘The Dominator’ holds a razor-close spilled-decision win over Dillashaw the current champ has put on an impressive run of finishes at 145-pounds during Cruz’s absence, Dillashaw himself has said he is “the greatest Bantamweight of all time” something Dominick has taken issue with saying Dillashaw can never be called the greatest due to Cruz’s win over TJ back in January 2016. Standing in his way for another title shot is #6 Jimmie Rivera who looks to make a run of his own to the championship, Rivera has said a key path to victory is his superior boxing to quote “We’ve seen Cruz be outstruck by high-level boxers like Cody [Garbrandt] as well as TJ [Dillashaw] outstrike him with leg kicks. I believe I excel in both my boxing and kickboxing I respect Dominick [Cruz] but it’ll be a long night for him”. </em></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

To the shock of everyone Dominick Cruz offers no touching of the gloves, it defiantly got the crowd into the fight even more as the opening round begins. Cruz comes blitzing in fast landing a one-two then cross but his right hook is dodged by Rivera who slips to the left countering ‘The Dominator’ with a left hook. Rivera tries pumping the jab but Cruz’s iconic head movement prevents the jab from consistently landing. Rivera mixes it up by using the jab to fake the lead leg kick with some of them landing, one moment saw Rivera feint the jab land a calf kick which opened up the guard of Cruz for a lead uppercut than landed cleanly. Cruz flicks out two counter jabs then lands a nice stiff left head kick to the dome of the head of Rivera but Rivera does well to catch the leg of Cruz while retracting it. Instead of going for the single-leg, Rivera decides to clinch up using some shoulder strikes to smash into the face of Cruz. Dominick tries to outwrestle attempting a body lock but Jimmie Rivera uses his superior strength to quickly lift up Cruz then slam him to the ground landing himself in half-guard. Rivera hits some short sharp elbows while on top, Cruz attempts multiple scrambles and sprawls but Rivera keeps the fight in half-guard with himself on top for the rest of the round. </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Rivera comes out attacking Cruz with leg kicks to the thigh then transitions to calf kicks, Cruz is still moving well but isn’t offering much it terms of offense as he looks to close distance to wrestle. But after a pretty slow leg kick from Rivera who looks to be slowing down Dominick Cruz catches it then sweeps the other leg from underneath Jimmie Rivera. Dominick follows him to the ground grabbing side-control in which he starts firing off some solid ground n’ pound over the course of two minutes using both punches to the head plus knees to the body as well as head occasionally. Dominick excellently transitions to half-guard but can’t seem to get into the mount so the majority of the round is spent with Cruz smothering Rivera with his wrestling while also offering a few knees to the body and head. </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The two stands and jab at each other from a distance for the opening of the round but after settling into his striking range Rivera blitzes in landing the set-up jab but the elusive head movement of Dominick Cruz see the right then left hooks of Rivera along with the follow-up uppercut all hit air. Cruz puts together a 5 punch combination nailing two hooks of his own to the chin with a one-two then cross also landing, Rivera doesn’t back off deciding to stand and trade swinging out a left overhand then ruthless looping right hook both miss badly leaving him open to a quick flying knee to the chin as Cruz gets some serious air time. This causes Rivera to back off but Cruz stays on him as once he hits the ground he grabs the single-leg takedown getting it instantly!!! The next 3 minutes are spent with Cruz getting some solid ground n’ pound to the body and head in full guard but Cruz just can’t seem to transition to any other position which leads to the referee standing the two up after a brief stalemate. Rivera comes forward landing a one-two but misses a right cross as he attempts to keep up the pace with strikes leading to a flurry of 3 hooks landing straight on the chin of Rivera. Cruz is taunting Rivera to keep exchanging at close boxing range as his footwork is shot at this point but he still poses excellent head movement although Rivera was having success at long range with leg kicks he seems to be exclusively throwing in short boxing range just like Cruz wants as ‘The Dominator’ ducks under two hooks from Rivera landing a counter right hook over the top then flurries with 4 more hooks that all land. Cruz lands consecutive one-twos before ducking under a set-in jab then overhand from Rivera to get the double-leg takedown with supreme speed!!! Rivera does well to use his two feet to keep Cruz from getting into half or full guard meaning the former two-time champion has to settle for stick-guard where he flings down looping punches to the body after. Rivera tries his hardest but can’t top Cruz from grabbing side control where he starts unloading with some clean punches then even more clean punches on top of more then more and even more!!! Rivera is letting a lot of punches go unanswered they don’t have much power behind them but still, the referee yells “show me something”!!! Cruz starts putting more heat on his punches but gets a little sloppy allowing for a brilliant sprawl from Rivera which sees him grab the right leg of Cruz driving him to the cage. Rivera attempts the single-leg but Cruz defends it brilliantly by pushing on the head of Rivera then pushes him off of him as the two get back to exchanging at a close boxing range. Rivera lands the jab feints well to then land a great overhand right but Cruz shows he still has a chin on him immediately he flurries with three hooks then caps off the combo with a clean straight right to the chin which wobbles Rivera!!! Dominick uses the superman punch while Rivera backs away to put him down!!! Cruz kneels down beside his knocked down opponent then unleashing with a ruthless hammer fist that puts Rivera out cold!!! </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Dominick ‘The Dominator’ Cruz does it again he gets the impressive 4th round knockout after a 2 year lay off when asked what next he told commentator Paul Felder, “I want my belt back as well as my undefeated record back too when Urijah [Faber] beat me the first time I came back to beat him twice to the point I feel that first lose doesn't count the same thing will happen to [Cody] Garbrandt. Also, I beat the current champion right now. I'm coming off an impressive knockout. I know [Marlon] Moraes is whining for it but why should someone earn a title shot off beating an unranked opponent? That was number 6 right there I think I deserve it the most.” </em></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</p><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">Dominick Cruz is back ladies and gentlemen with a knockout victory to the surprise of many as this is only the 2nd ever time Jimmie Rivera has been finished in his career the 1st time coming when he was knocked out in 33 seconds against Marlon Moraes last year. The knockout has drawn comparisons to when Cruz made his comeback after 3 years away from the sport due to multiple leg injuries in 2014 at UFC 178 when he won in just over a minute with a knockout against Takeya Mizugaki to secure himself a title shot even though he would have to wait a year to get it after suffering another major leg injury. Early on it seemed to be Rivera’s fight to lose as he won the opening round by using crisp boxing, leg kicks, then mixing it up with wrestling with Cruz seeming a little rusty to start out in the process he had taken one of Cruz’s most important tools his footwork. But after Cruz was able to establish his superior wrestling in the following rounds the exchanges on the feet were at a close boxing range that favored Cruz who used his superior head movement at will as he no longer had to worry about the leg kicks at such a close range although he didn’t need to worry as Rivera after round 1 abounded the kicks entirely. Cruz showed with the two years out he had sharpened his accuracy landing a lot of punches directly to the chin showing some extremely high-level boxing that eventually dropped Rivera after a combo of hooks then a series of straight rights put Rivera down with ground n’ pound putting his lights out. During his post-fight interview with Jon Anik, he put out his hit list naming Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw he explained further his future plans during the post-fight press conference, </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Those are the only two names that make sense to me, I proved I’m a level above most of the contenders across the division a title shot or a rematch against Cody [Garbrandt]. Those are two rematches I fancy my chances in I made a lot of mistakes in both fights that I can easily fix”. </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Add another fight of the night bonus to Michael Johnson and Cub Swanson’s paycheck the two put on a great fight which saw Swanson struggle to deal with the speed of Johnson in round 1 of ‘The Meance’ but Swanson found success right the right hook to the body throughout the round during the dying seconds of the 1st Swanson executed on a feint with the right hook to the body then went upstairs with the left hook that put Johnson on his ass right as the round ended. It was clear Johnson hadn’t yet recovered as Swanson came out swinging and landing a lot of looping punches it seemed a TKO or KO finish was just around the corner and it was but not for Swanson. Johnson who was countering off an aggressive Swanson hit him with an array of looping punches that cleanly landed but eventually missed with a left hook in which Johnson quickly countered with an overhand then quickly followed it up with three straight punches then a right cross in what felt like less than a second that Swanson went from being the hammer to being the nail as Johnson’s arm was raised in victory after finishing him with ground n’ pound. A tough pill to swallow for Cub he kept a poker face for the crowd but during the post-fight press conference let some of the emotion show after a reporter asked him about if the UFC will remove him from the rankings with tonight’s loss, “Man less than a year ago I was one win away from a title-shot now it’s I’m one loss away from being cut. What’s that 4 in a row now? Being knocked out by [Michael] Johnson? That fight was mine for the taking and blew it. I definitely deserve to be off the rankings after a performance like that”.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

For those who betted on the biggest underdog of the night in the (+500) C.B. Dollaway got their money's worth, Dollaway showed some serious holes in Giles game as he struggled with the hand fighting close-quarters grappling on the feet with Dollaway constantly tied up with Giles putting him into the muay-thai clinch landing an array of dirty boxing punches plus knees. Giles would gas early attempting to power out of every clinch with little technique sensing this the veteran Dollaway quickly took down Giles pretty easily with a leg sweep then as they hit the mat quickly grabbed the guillotine choke to put the first loss on Giles record. A stunning finish for a stunningly dominant performance as Giles failed to land a single significant strike for the whole 3 minutes and 52 seconds. Speaking of dominant performances Marlon Vera easily defeated Mathew Lopez who has now been cut by the UFC following 3 straight losses, Vera used his dynamic striking (the 1st time with a head kick the 2nd time with an uppercut then right hook combo) plus superior footwork to keep the fight standing dropping Lopez twice in the 1st round. Lopez could never get in close or trap Vera against the cage to get the takedown often shooting for the blast double leg from far out but went 0 for 7 on the night with takedowns. Liz Carmouche is now the #1 contender at Women’s Flyweight as she’ll likely fight the winner of the rescheduled [C] Valentina Shevchenko versus Katlyn Chookagian. It was a close 1st round Montano landed an early takedown with solid top control with some solid straight punches landing on the feet as well but Carmouche showed mind-blowing accuracy with hard punches to the body and head often transitioning between the two with combos. This led to a dominant round 2 with Carmouche finding the chin on Montano at a 70%+ clip, a dazed Montano couldn’t muster the strength to fully implement her wrestling which leads to a brutal finish in the third as the two were tangled Carmouche unloaded with bus driver uppercuts one of those uppercuts landed cleanly as they separated put her down after some ground n’ pound instead of finishing her off with punches she opted for the kimura submission which she easily got as Montano quickly tapped. Carmouche said she fully expects to face Valentina in a rematch saying that “Chookagia stands close to literal 0% chance”. Carmouche is currently the only fighter to finish the Flyweight champion back in 2010. </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

John Moraga has bounced back with what some are calling a “hometown decision win” over Yuta Sasaki getting a split decision win on the scorecards. All three rounds were close and competitive exclusively a stand-up battle in which Sasaki outlander Moraga in every single round mainly due to the high volume of kicks to the body and leg however those kicks lacked power with them being more kicks to score points than winning the fight. Moraga had big moments in each round as well as the two constantly exchanged combos in the center of the octagon, Moraga would constantly catch Sasaki with a check right hook then cross while Sasaki like mentioned before was a bit more creative and dynamic with spinning attacks mostly focusing using his kicks. Nathan Coy joins Matthew Lopez in being a part of the pool of fighters the UFC has cut this evening after his 31 second TKO loss to Sabah Homasi getting his first win in the promotion after 4 fights. Coy shot early but Sabahi excellently stuffed it ending up on top then blasting Coy in the face with a knee becoming the first UFC fighter to win via grounded knees since they became a legalized move earlier this year. The last thing of note is Bharat Kandare become the first fighter from India to get a win inside the UFC knocking out Yaotzin Meza with a check right hook then uppercut as Meza was blitzing in with a lead push kick to the body that missed then elbow that was to slow as Kandare found his chin. Meza would also be the 3rd fighter on this card tonight to be released by the UFC after his 3rd round loss tonight.</div><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Date: February Week 4 (2019) Saturday

Event posts will be a mixture of both fight play-by-plays as well as quick bullet points to summarize the event as a whole, only key fights like the fight of the night or fights, the performance of the night as well as fights that have a lot of significance like the main event, co-main, or key bout on the main-card or prelims will be covered. These play by plays are romanticized for dramatic effect but the results are legitimate, if the play-by-plays are too long or you don’t feel like reading them I’ll have a more brief summary of what happened plus the full card results at the bottom.

FIGHT PLAY-BY-PLAYS:

Bellator history will be made tonight the trilogy bout between reigning Featherweight champion Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire will face former two-time Featherweight champ Pat Curran tonight to determine in all likelihood who is the greatest Featherweight in Bellator history? Freire has talked the talk coming into this fight being open with fans and media alike about his aspirations on becoming the greatest Featherweight in the history of MMA something he feels he is on the cusp of with a possible title defense over Curran tonight. Meanwhile, Curran has had a very simplistic approach heading into tonight that being seeing this as “just another fight” and looks forward to “once again becoming the champion”.

Round 1

The two meet each other in the middle Curran shows excellent head movement ducking and weaving out of the way of a jab flurry of 4 hooks then question mark kick combination from Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire to start the round he responds with a set-in straight right to the body. Curran presses forward with a one-two but Freire covers up well to absorb the punches then ribs the body with a single right hook while retreating back towards the cage. Freire feints going up top firing off a quick leg kick but Curran checks it excellently which causes the champion to slip!!! Curran quickly grabs the top position in half-guard!!! Curran fires off some ground n’ pound to the body meanwhile Freire is attempting to make his way to the fence of the cage. After a period of struggle Freire reaches the cage then is able to get up his back up against the fence as Curran still has a hold of him. After some exchanges from the clinch with Freire getting off a few elbows to the head while Curran gets a few bus driver uppercuts eventually after securing the body lock the challenger is able to swiftly lift then blast the champion with a Greco-roman slam leaving Curran on top in side-control!!! Freire tries to sprawl to get out but Curran holds the position unleashing with some hammer fists then transitions for a kimura submission!!! It’s fairly deep but Curran didn’t apply it correctly so no matter how hard Curran tries he can’t submit him!!! Freire sprawls again finding much more success this time around able to get up to his feet Curran quickly tries to grab a standing guillotine!!! He’s got a solid grip but mistakenly pulls guard which causes Curran to lose control now he finds himself on the ground as Freire grabs the top position!!! While on top in half-guard Freire opens a cut over the left eye of Curran with some slicking elbows. Freire continues to fire off some elbows cleanly to the face of Curran who gives up his back in an attempt to protect himself!!! Freire landings some looping ground n’ pound but Curran survives to the end of the round!!!

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 10-9 Freire

Sherdog: 10-9 Freire

Blurcat: 10-9 Curran

Round 2

Curran comes in blitzing in with a jab then a right hand that both land then another jab lands, Freire backs up to the cage as he does so Curran dives for the double-leg but Freire defends well spins Curran around backwards then hits a nice elbow as he disengages for the clinch!!! Freire jumps back to the center of the cage then jumps right back into range ducking under a straight-right from Curran then blasts him with a counter-right head kick right on the button!!! Curran is once again dazed nearly falling on his ass he wobbles around!!! Another right head kick lands this time on the dome!!! Freire comes in with three looping hooks but Curran ducks and dodges them all counter with a right hook to the body. Freire puts everything into a devastating uppercut but Curran slips right then pulls with a counter one-two that lands cleanly. Freire circles around firing a few leg kicks to the thigh then lands a set-in jab but Curran ducks under a right hook, showing some crisp boxing Curran fires off a quick 3 straight punches of the face!!! Both fighters aren’t backing down as they continue to throw strikes in the center of the Bellator cage!!! Freire lands a push kick to the body then a jab followed by a roundhouse kick, Curran again blasts Freire with 3 straight punches then slips his head backwards to avoid a counter cross from Freire which he counters with a right hook to the body. Freire doubles up with the jab as well as the push kicks to the body keeping the fight at long range for a while, Freire rushes in with a one-two that is too far to the left but he lands a follow up with a left overhand to the forehead then catches Curran with a crunching right hook as Curran attempted to counter with an uppercut which missed then left hook counter that was to slow as he eats ‘Pitbull’ right hook. Freire lands a push kick to the leg then body before flying at Curran with a superman punch!!! But the superman punches is blocked by Curran who grabs a body lock while Freire’s in mid-air but as they go down the champion grabs the guillotine!!! It looks to be locked in as Freire continues to grip tighter and tighter as he grabs the top position!!! It looks like Curran is about to go out but the round ends as Curran is saved by the bell for the 2nd time this fight!!!

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 20-18 Freire

Sherdog: 20-18 Freire

Blurcat: 19-19

Round 3

Freire looks to end this fight right here right now loading up on some looping hooks as the two exchange early in the round. Freire leaps at Curran with a long jumping superman jab then two huge looping hooks but Curran excellently covers up blocking all 3 punches landing a nice short check left hook while backing up. Curran scores to the body with a straight then a jab to the head, the two feint as Freire looks to be going for a level change but throws two huge looping hooks again that Curran just slips both. Curran gets a nice slip and pull counter jab, but his back hits the fence of the Bellator cage as he now has nowhere to run as Freire traps Curran against the cage with some killer footwork blasting Curran with a kick to the ribs then nearly lands a spinning elbow to the head!!! Freire spins again this time with a back fist but runs right into a check right hook of Curran!!! Freire lands face-first to the canvas!!! Curran starts pounding away as Freire tries to get back up but Curran grabs the back of Freire!!! Curran flattens him out and his ground n’ pound is landing a devastating pace!!! Referee Keith Peterson calls it!!! Pat Curran has won the trilogy and now makes it a 3-time Bellator Featherweight champion!!!

In a sensational fight, Pat Curran has regained the Bellator Featherweight Championship to cap off the trilogy with Patricio Freire (2-1) against the now former champion. It was a devastating defeat for Patricio Freire the look of dismay and disappointment was clear upon his face as Scott Coker wrapped the champion belt around Pat Curran, he was sent straight to the hospital but made Tweeted out, “This all apart of the plan you don’t become the greatest Featherweight of all time without facing adversity congrats to Curran but I’m not going anywhere”. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Freire could get a 4th fight against Curran due to how competitive tonight’s clash was however a Freire has discussed a move up to Lightweight the future for ‘Pitbull’ is currently unknown. Curran was complimentary of the former champ recognizing in the post-fight press conference that he was hurt multiple times and is keen for a possible 4th fight. The rest of the card tonight was pretty lackluster as excepted the main-event practically carried the show but going down the list of results Phil Davis as expected dominate the now 44-year-old Tito Ortiz. Davis scored a total of 6 out of 6 takedowns on the night in route to a unanimous decision win in which 12 minutes out of the fight 15 spent on the ground with Davis exclusively on top as Ortiz was helpless to the younger superior grappler. Before that fight we witnessed two close split decisions the first one being a surprising tactical chess match played out between the eldest son of the late Kimbo Slice in Kevin Ferguson Jr versus Javier Torres, Ferguson Jr showed great patience timing his shots well landing clean stiff with some follow up straight jabs plus leg kicks to the thigh for the most part. Meanwhile, Torres put in some great bodywork in rounds 1 and 2 as well winning the briefly clinch exchanges with Ferguson Jr landing nice knees to the body plus bus driver uppercuts. Torres would secure round 3 with a takedown early and wouldn’t let his opponent up with round 3 clearly in his bag the question was did he do enough in rounds 1 or 2 to get the win? One judge thought he did while the other two disagreed handing Kevin Ferguson Jr the split decision victory the two exchanged harsh words after the fight as Javier Torres called the fight “a disgusting robbery” downplaying Kevin Ferguson Jr power by saying “for a street fighter he hits like a b****” meanwhile Ferguson Jr laid of Torres in the post-fight presser, “last round for all the marbles and you come out panic wrestling? Diving for the takedown for dear life? Very cowardly move that’s not fighting thats’ just being a p****”.

The 2nd one was a complete snoozefest of a fight as Tyrell Fortune remains undefeated with a less than impressive win over Justin Wren with the two being such high-class wrestlers both seemed to believe that they would cancel each other out if they decided to take the fight to the mat so neither fighter attempted a single takedown on the night instead we witnessed a very sloppy and exhausting stand-up match as the two gassed within the first 2 rounds. Fortune out-landed Wren in each round mainly due to his more dynamic striking mixing in his straight punches with kicks to the leg, body, and even head occasionally but both fighters failed to land anything clean to the head, Wren was constantly coming forward being the aggressor often using a straight to mas a looping overhand but like mentioned before neither fighter was able to land a clean punch on the night. It seems Bellators promoter Scott Coker and the Heavyweight prospect have come to a rough patch as Coker heavily criticized Fortune’s performance, “[Jusitn] Wren tried to make a fight out of it but unfortunately Tyrell Fortune didn’t seem to want to fight looked more like he was interested in point fighting maybe you can get away with that in the small promotions but this is Heavyweight people wanna see finishes”. Fortune’s contract with Bellator is up so it’ll be interesting to see if the Heavyweight will come to terms with what many regards as the 2nd biggest MMA promotion. Lastly probably one of the only two great fights on the card saw Revelina Berto get an incredible comeback victory early on Berto and Sinead Kavanagh traded at long-range Berto was sticking the jab and move her head well but Kavanagh was light of her feet landing nice push and spinning back kicks to the body. Eventually, the two started trading a close range which favored Kavanagh who was pinpoint with her hooks often landing cleanly on the chin after a landing two she switched up her left hook into a lead elbow which rocked Berto all the way to the cage then a front kick to the face put her down. Kavanagh landed some brutal ground n’ pound but couldn’t finish Berto off as Kavanagh remained in half-guard for a majority of the rest of the round. By the 2nd round, it was clearly Kavanagh had used up all of her energy which led to her looking to grapple early after failing on a takedown but able to push Berto up against the cage of some dirty boxing she then went for a blast double-leg successfully getting it but in an amazing scramble Berto was able to grab Kavanagh’s right arm on the way down nearly getting an armbar as while the two scrambled she gained top position but Kavanagh survived the submission by popping her arm out just in time. But she wouldn’t be so lucky come the 2nd time around as Berto gained side-control then forced Kavanagh to tap out with a kimura submission on the same right arm.

It’s all but confirmed that the trilogy between reigning UFC Light-Heavyweight champion Alexander Gustafsson and former two-time champ himself Jon Jones will happen later this year reportedly the UFC is interested in booking it for international fight week. Tonight’s Light-Heavyweight main-event will likely determine who will be next in line for the winner of that championship fight. Coming into the weigh-ins tonight Anthony Smith looks sharp after a great weigh-cut despite being in front of a very pro-Blachowicz crowd he feels a victory will elevate his game to a whole new level, “it’s cliche to say this but this really is the best I ever feel, the weigh-cut was a breeze, training went extremely well I don’t have any real major injuries or pains coming into tomorrows fight. The goal is to win by any means necessarily knockout, submission, decision, I can literally win in all those types of scenarios”. Jan Blachowicz will headline the UFC’s first-ever show in Poland he said he “feels honored” and promises “fireworks”. Much like Smith the Polish native Jan looks in prime condition both are only 1 win away from challenging for UFC gold and both weren’t interested in talking about any other fights with a possible victory showcasing how laser focus both are on each other. Dan Hardy perfectly highlighted how even of a match-up this is in the most recent episode of Inside the Octogan both are high-level BJJ artist with solid knockout power the two can also mix it up but Hardy pointed out how Blachowicz tends to favor a traditional muay-thai style of fighting while also probably holding a significant weight advantage come fight night meanwhile Smith switches up between boxing and kickboxing stances as well the odd takedown. The co-main event saw tensions come to ahead with a near brawl on stage when Welterweights Mike Perry and Niko Price faced off each other during the weigh-ins. The ever so entertaining Perry literally grabbing Price by the neck with his right hand which led to Sean Shelby and UFC security quickly getting between them as they both started swinging. What caused this brawl? Well, just a day before their fight Nike Price appeared on The MMA Show with Ariel Helwani, when asked about Perry’s skills as a fighter he made a subtle dig at Mikes ex-girlfriend saying, “Mike’s a wild man, I mean you only need to look at him outside the cage theirs a reason some people can’t stand being around him”. Previously it was a pretty tame build-up but in just 3 days it’s turned nuclear hot between the two with it all coming to a boiling point at the weigh-ins. Luckily neither was hurt so the fight will go on as scheduled. In total 7 out of the 12 fights, tonight have a Polish fighter competing tonight on one of few two non-Polish fighters taking each other on is former interim and undisputed Bantamweight champion Renan Barao on a 3-fight skid he claims to be “reenergized” despite not being able to rattle of back to back wins since 2014 after recently turning 32 he also claimed to finally “finding a piece with the [TJ] Dillashaw loses” which he countered as a major factor for his losing streak. #12 Bantamweight prospect Cody Stanmann’s a high-level wrestler and boxer is very technical although he lacks in the BJJ department a little plus is very weak to leg kicks if Barao is able to show some of the flashes of the fighter he uses to be during his championship days Barao a high-level striker could devastate him with kicks keyword being could as Stanmann is a big (+500) betting favorite.

On the main-card we also have our first missed weight attempt within the UFC this year as Raoni Barcelos weighed in at 147.5 pounds over the 145-pound Featherweight limit this has also led to a hit of spark in tensions with his opponent Polands Tymoteusz Swiatek who makes his UFC debut after an intense staredown then an interview with BT Sport expressed some vicious intentions. “Missing weight is unacceptable we had weeks of preparation I was already 151 by the start of this week, I cut down from 180! This my home my UFC debut and already I have fighters trying to cheat me. I can promise everyone who watches this I will knockout Raoni Barcelos in the 1st round tomorrow night”. While the two didn’t get that much attention before their chilling staredown it’s a great thing that their both getting such recognition as this fight is a dark horse for the fight of the night on the card both earned UFC contracts through raw brawling power and overwhelming psychical attributes. The opening bout of the main card sees the #10 Blagoy Ivanov faces Poland’s #11 Marcin Tybura both are relatively slow Heavyweights not known for their striking rather grappling however, the difference being Tybura relies more on his BJJ sprawling meanwhile Ivanov has a background in Sambo which typically makes him much stronger than he actually appears on first glance one of his favorite things to do is do slam his opponents into the canvas. The prelims are as expected mostly dominated by Polish fighters the headliner will have the undefeated Matryna Czech a lethal BJJ black belt from Poland facing undefeated #15 Women’s Bantamweight Antonia Shevchenko the sister of UFC Flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko both train together and are coached by the same staff. While not being from Poland Mauro Cerilli is one of the most promising Italian Heavyweights in recent memory a former Cage Warriors Heavyweight champion although a small Heavyweight at 6’2” he packs some surprising power behind his hands in fact the UFC he might be the quickest Heavyweight on the roster as he makes his UFC debut tonight against Rashad Coulter a big 265+ pounds Heavyweight known for his accurate headhunting despite his lack of technique he has an eye for landing clean. The rest of the card is fairly unknown unfortunately but they’ll have a chance to make a name for themselves come tomorrow night.

UFC Fight Night: Blachowciz vs. Smith

Date: March Week 1 (2019) Saturday

Event posts will be a mixture of both fight play-by-plays as well as quick bullet points to summarize the event as a whole, only key fights like the fight of the night or fights, the performance of the night as well as fights that have a lot of significance like the main event, co-main, or key bout on the main-card or prelims will be covered. These play by plays are romanticized for dramatic effect but the results are legitimate, if the play-by-plays are too long or you don’t feel like reading them I’ll have a more brief summary of what happened plus the full card results at the bottom.

--------------------------------------------------------------

FIGHT PLAY-BY-PLAYS:

Vv8F72O.png

The best way to describe the build-up to tonight’s co-main is best summed up by the saying “s*** got real bad real quick”. Their infamous near shoving match turned near brawl on weigh-in day gathered a million views on the UFC’s official Youtube channel, the near brawl was instigated by Perry but the cause for why Perry did what he did was instigated by Price as in an interview 3 days before the bout he had made some subtle digs at Perry ex-girlfriend. To quote Perry, “everything was fine but once you step over that line the gloves are off this isn’t a fight no more but a simulated deathmatch and he [Niko Price] will quite inside that octagon”. Price has followed up on his taunting of Perry by posting meme’s that poked fun at Perry looking like an “an angry little dwarf from Snow White”, Price during an interview straight after the twos heated face-off said “No one is scared of Mike Perry, the reality is this is an easy fight for me. The UFC matches with him to find out if your a good fighter or not, notice how real fighters like Cowboy [Donald Cerrone] destroyed him in one round”. Perry was nowhere to be found for a possible preferring to let everyone know how he really feels inside the octagon.

Round 1

As the two are introduced by ring announcer Joe Martinez, Perry stares down at Price the entire introduction while Price smiles and flips the bird in response. The two meet in the octagon Mike Perry is the first to land with a lunging but finds his follow-up leg kick checked while coming in so he ends up running into a countering jab from Price while backing off as well as a straight. Price decides to keep pressing onwards offering up a few flick jabs to range distance, Perry feints going low of a single-leg to close distance then roughs Price up with his superior dirty boxing as ‘Platinum’ has a clear advantage in strength as he lands some hard bus driver uppercuts and knees to the body as he pushes Price to the cage. Perry decides to let go of the dominant position instead opting to throw two short hooks that land then backs up to the center of the octagon. Price again uses the flick jab that sets up a nice clean right leg kick which buckles Perry briefly!!! Perry responds with a double-jab the 1st one lands but Price slips the 2nd one by leaning his head back then lands another flick jab followed up by a left hook right behind the ear then a quick lead knee to the body then circles to his left to avoid Perry from trying to clinch up with him again. Perry uses a lunging one-two but Price slips his head to the right then unleashes two quick hooks to the body before circling out again, Niko Price seems to have noticed Perry’s tendency to be a stationary target that only covers up to the head when he is getting fired upon as Price now starts to end every combination with a body shot. But after missing a jab up top Perry is able to counter with a clean jab of his own then puts a lot of swing into a looping right hook!!! But Price just avoids it by slipping his head to the right barely dodging it!!! Price in response fires a quick kick to the liver while Perry is still in motion of throwing his huge looping hook!!! Perry collapses holding his ribs!!! Price quickly grabs the head of Perry then blasts him with a huge knee to the face!!! Perry is still moving around but Price keeps hitting an array of hammer fists straight to the face until the fight is called off!!!

OFFICIAL RESULT:

Niko Price def. Mike Perry via TKO [Kicks & Grounded-Knees] R1 (2:48)

[Fight Rating: Great]

Both once considered lower gate-keepers to the Light-Heavyweight and or Middleweight division Jan Blachowciz or Anthony Smith with a victory will officially become the number 1 contender in the Light-Heavyweight division. Blachowicz a former KSW Light-Heavyweight champion signed with the UFC in late 2014 but in his first 6 fights went (2-4) however, he now finds himself on a 4-fight win streak with 2 performance of the night and a fight of the night awards. After having mixed results at 185-pounds Smith, has remained undefeated with his move up to Light-Heavyweight going (3-0) with knockout wins over legends Rashad Evans and Mauricio Rua with his 3rd win being a performance of the night 2nd round submission against Volkan Oezdemir whose last fight was for the title against then-champion Daniel Cormier earlier last year. Both looked in the best shape of their careers come weigh-in day and are locked in on gaining what in likelihood will lead to a UFC title shot.

Round 1

Referee Marc Goddard in charge of the action of this one as the two touch gloves to no one’s surprises Blachowicz gets a huge round of applause from the Polish crowd he gives the crowd a huge fist in the air to get them cheering even louder. Commentators Dan Hardy, John Gooden, and Paul Felder comment on how loud it is in here as the fight gets started. Smith throws up the double jab then a quick left-cross but all punches are blocked by the guard of Blachowicz who hits a nice two short left hands while circling right. Smith feints throwing a leg kick then throws a lead elbow which is parried by the lead hand of Blachowciz who then hits a nasty kick to the ribs which he also uses to close distance to get a nice blast double-leg takedown!!! Blachowicz quickly attempts to get from half to full guard but Smith is ready and scrambles well for a few seconds is able to grab Jan’s back but after failing on an ill-advised rear-naked choke attempt Blachowciz regains top position this time in side-control. Some nice knees to the body land for Jan who then gets up and attempts some soccer kicks to the head!!! Smith just dodges getting back up but Blachowicz grabs a hold of Anthony ‘Lionheart’ Smith pushing him against the cage. Blachowciz uses a variety of dirty boxing techniques switching from the uppercuts, elbows, short punches to the ribs, knees to the body, plus footstomps as a lengthy period of time is spent with Smith unable to get Blachowicz off him showcasing the Polish natives’ superior strength. Eventually, though Blachowicz’s active dirty boxing comes to a halt as he attempts to take a few breathers, Smith offers a few short slaps but eventually Marc Goddard separates the two. Smith’s lands a jab, then set-in right hook that grazes the forehead but an devastating uppercut with a lot of heat behind it is slipped by the slick head movement of who moves to the right Blachowicz then quickly grabs a hold of the single-leg successfully getting his 2nd takedown of the night as the round comes to an end.

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 10-9 Blachowicz

Sherdog: 10-9 Blachowicz

Blurcat: 10-9 Blachowicz

Round 2

Jan starts the round parrying the jab on ‘Lionheart’ Smith which allows Blachowicz to land a couple of nice leg plus body kicks but after a minute Smith feints going for the one-two then lands a shocking spinning back kick to the body which backs Blachowicz ups the cage. ‘Lionheart’ comes in with some heat and despite Blachowicz catching him with a straight while coming in Smith lands a huge looping hook to the body followed by a nice knee to the face as Smith quickly grabbed the muay-thai clinch!!! Smith attempts a standing guillotine while Blachowicz is attempting to recover from that knee to the face!!! Smith has a hold of the submission for a while but Blachowicz excellently uses the cage to escape from the submission as his head pops out we can now see the huge cut on the forehead of Jan Blachowicz the cut is right in the middle with blood getting into both of his eyes!!! Goddard looked like he was about to separate the two to get the doctor to check on the cut but Smith quickly grabs the body lock then uses a nice judo throw as Smith grabs side-control on top!!! Smith grabs the armbar but Jan defends it before Smith can get a good grip on the arm!!! Smith lands a few short punches to the head plus knees to the body he seems content in side-control which he does so to ride out the round he gets up with 10 seconds to try a few soccer kicks to the head but Jan just gets out the way in time as the round ends.

Doctors are checking on the cut of Jan Blachowicz it is indeed a very bad cut, it depends on who you ask if they believe the fight should be stopped or go on but the doctor isn’t one of them as he signals to Marc Goddard for the fight to continue.

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 19-19

Sherdgo: 19-19

Blurcat: 19-19

Round 3

Smith opens the round with a nice jab then a front kick to the face he then uses a hop step to get in close grabbing a singe-leg but a great sprawl from Blachowicz has him on top he then blasts Smith with a huge knee which causes ‘Lionheart’ to fall on his back covering his face!!! Blachowicz grabs half-guard now then hits some clean elbows to the face!!! Commentator Paul Felder calls for the fight to be stopped but referee Marc Goddard allows the fight to go on as Smith is able to gather his wits about him he is able to make his way to the cage of the octagon then gets up with Blachowicz still smothering him. Jan lands some nice short punches to the ribs which cause Smith’s rib cage to bruise up with a mixture of the colors red and purple!!! Another lengthy period of time is spent with Blachowicz controlling Smith against the cage again using dynamic dirty boxing techniques like elbows, uppercuts, knees, and footstomps but again Blachowicz uses another lengthy period of time to get a few gulps of air in which causes another separation. Smith’s lighting fast jab catches Blachowicz right on the chin followed by a straight-right, Smith uses a lunging looping hoop to catch Blachowicz again as he backs up but it comes up short. Blachowicz then catches Smith with a check right-hook then another hard kick to the rib cage followed bu a leg kick. Smith dives for a double-leg from far out but Jan again excellently sprawls nearly landing another counter grounded-knee to the face but Smith uses dodges it. The rest of the round is spent with Jan on top in a stick-guard landing some nice soccer kicks to the body.

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 29-28 Blachowicz

MMAJunkie: 29-28 Blachowicz

MMAJunkie: 29-28 Blachowicz

Round 4

Smith uses the jab then tries his other hands to try and grab wrist control to grapple with him but Blachowicz parries away both of the hands landing a nice straight-right then two hooks cleanly to the chin as Smith comes in. Jan grabs a hold of Smith the two both attempt to gain dominant position after a lengthy period of time despite Smith grabbing the body-lock, Blachowicz is able to strength his way out of it pushing Smith up against the cage then its back to the dynamic dirty boxing starting with footstomps then elbows to the head which opens a cut over the right eye of Smith then another clean uppercut breaks his nose!!! Blachowicz then digs into the body with an array of short punches to the ribs Smith’s body is so red at this point it’s now starting to turn exclusively purple from all the damage!!! Jan launches a knee to the body which causes the two to separate for a brief second this allows Jan to throw a flurry of 6 hooks 4 to the body then 2 to the head in total 5 of them lands with only one the hook up to the head being blocked!!! Jan continues to inflict damage while Smith is up against the cage continuing to dig into the body with punches and knees but eventually Smith is able to find separation with push kicks to the body which allows him to circle out to the right. Jan comes up short with a lead right hook to the body allowing Smith to land a stiff front kick to the face right under the chin!!! But Blachowicz eats the strike as he keeps coming forward, as Jan uses a hop step to land a double-jab then hops backwards to dodge a check left hook from Smith which allows Jan to land another nice brutal kick to the rib cage!!! Jan starts taking a few big gulps as he stays at long range looking to cruise until the end of the round. This allows Smith to land a few solid leg kicks which start to stifle the movement of Jan a little, Smith now starts to pressure Blachowicz as he backs up Jan launches a one-two but due to the leg kicks he can’t seem to get enough reach with his footwork which allows Smith to easily grab a double-leg takedown during the finale 30 seconds of the round he lands a few punches to the body until the round ends.

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 39-37 Blachowicz

Sherdog: 39-37 Blachowicz

Blurcat: 39-37 Blachowicz

Round 5

With one round left Smith’s corners attempts to get him hyped to get the finish, they tell him to attack then legs then go upstairs as Jan comes out with a limp. Smith comes out splitting the guard with a one-two then splits it again with a jab following it up with a leg kick to the thigh which slightly buckles Blachowicz!!! Smith tries to capitalize with a single leg on the same right leg he buckled Blachowicz with but Jan excellently sprawls again by pushing Smiths’ head down to the canvas then blasts him with two clean grounded knees to the head!!! Smith gives up his back as Jan rains down big punches up top landing a few as Smith covers up!!! Jan continues to fire off huge punches but now Smith is starting to block them more often as he barely survives the onslaught from Blachowicz!!! Jan attempts to get his hooks in Smith sprawls and nearly gets away but Jan still has his back, Jan lands some nice punches cleanly but Smith again prevents Blachowicz from getting the hooks in. In another sprawl, Smith again nearly gets up but again Jan is able to push Smiths’ head down to the canvas then knees him to the head again!!! Smith lands some elbows from the bottom in response as Jan grabs half-guard eventually though Smith is able to push of Blachowicz with his two feet and finally is up to his feet with a minute left!!! Smith’s corner is yelling at him to go “all-out”!!! Smith throws a flying knee but Jan dodges to the right then attempts a blast double-leg but Smith is able to back up just in time then throws a soccer kick to the head that barely misses!!! Smith yells at Blachowicz to “get the f*** up” which Blachowicz smiles at as he gets up. Smith starts some erratic feinting going both to the head and body keeping Blachowicz guessing where the punches will come from as he puts his hands out to parry. With his hands down low ‘Lionheart’ hits stiff jab then a crunching right hook lands right on the button, Smith feints a follow up left hook then hops back then hops right back in unleashing a right head kick but Blachowicz gets his guard up in time to block it allowing Jan to clinch up with Smith pushing him against the cage controlling him up against it until the fight comes to an end. A huge roar from the crowd as Jan Blachowicz has undoubtedly won this fight as we eagerly await the judge’s decision.

Poland’s Jan Blachowciz tonight has likely claimed himself a title-shot with his unanimous decision win over Anthony ‘Lionheart’ Smit in a bloody battle that Blachowciz was in control of for the majority of the bout. Blachowciz praised Smith for his toughness during his inside the cage post-fight interview with Dan Hardy, “I threw everything at him [Anthony Smith] all my power all my energy and he survived. By far the toughest fighter I’ve faced so far in my career, thank you Anthony I know you’ll be back, and thank you Poland all my fans and supporters this means the world to me. This is the greatest victory of my career, I’m ready for the title fight that’s the only fight I need”. Smith did well to surprise and promised a back bounce victory later this year. The heated rivalry between Nike Price and Mike Perry has come to an end for now as Price blasted ‘Platinum’ in the 1st round with a crushing kick to the body, although Price said he respected Perry “as an opponent” he had “no respect for him as a man” showing the two still have some clear animosity towards each other. Price called out for a fight against a top 15 Welterweight which he very well could get as Perry was previously on the rankings not too long ago. In total out of the 7 Polish fighters on the card, tonight (5-2) won, Tymoteusz Swiatek, maximized his UFC debut with a 1st round performance of the night knockout. Swiatek just seem to constantly be one step ahead Barcelos was just really slow out there it was clear missing weight played a huge factor as the Brazilian only landed one punch a pop-jab during the first minute of the fight. Barcelos tried to set up the jab with other strikes like looking overhands plus oblique kicks but Swiatek was faster and more defensively sound as he checked plus blocked/ parried all of Barcelo’s strikes eventually he caught him coming in as the Brazilian flung a straight but Swiatek slipped to the right cracked Barcelo with two hooks then put him out with a one-two that both broke the nose and knocked Barcelo’s out cold.

Marcin Tybura has probably won the robbery of the year with a surprising split decision victory, for rounds 1 and 2 Blagoy Ivanov was able to smother and control Tybura getting 4 takedowns (2 each within the first two rounds) as well some decent dirty boxing up against the cage. However, in both said rounds, Tybura found some success with elbows off his back including a pretty solid armbar submission attempt in the 1st round to end it, during the 3rd Ivanov was clearly gassed, which allowed Tybura to land some nice flick jabs plus straights to the body, Ivanov landed leaping straights of his own but Tybura effectively won the round with a takedown of his own keeping top control for the last 2 minutes of the round. All media members in attendance had bout 29-28 in favor of Ivanov in a pretty dull fight but the two ringside judges scored it for Tybura giving him the 1st and 3rd rounds. Even the Polish crowd who was rooting for Tybura was fairly stunned by the decision although there were a few fair shares of cheers as well, Tybura called for a rematch with Derrick Lewis proclaiming “I want that fight run back, I was winning until he caught me. I’m fairly confident that we can run it back sometime soon”. Staying in the Heavyweight division Mauro Cerilli got an impressive head kick KO a rarity in the UFC’s Heavyweight division the set-up was perfect early on Cerilli constantly landed straight punches to the body that eventually allowed him to hit a stunning question mark kick and despite it not being all that technical the fact a Heavyweight could even get off such a strike is impressive non the less. Finale fight worth of note is Martyna Czeh’s fight of the night comeback against Antonina Shevchenko who outstruck Czeh with a combination of push kicks to the body plus straight punches both the head and body as well. Controlling the distance with ease Shevchenko by round 2 was able to incorporate calf kicks upping the output this round with constantly looking for the double-jab to set up more push kicks. After two dominant potentially 10-8 rounds in which Czeh had very little in terms of offense to show for only able to land the occasionally pop jab as well as a few ducking uppercuts, her resistance and persistence with the ducking uppercuts finally paid off as one in the 3rd round eventually landed right under the chin of Shevchenko the shot momentarily rocked putting her on ice allowing Czeh to get a desperate blast double-leg takedown when it hit the mat it was clear Antonina Shevchenko BJJ and wrestling was some huge work in progress as Czeh after rocking Shevchenko again with ground n’ pound from half-guard was able to grab her back in a scramble eventually getting the rear-naked choke finish.

UFC 235 has a different kind of buzz despite the UFC holding a pay-per-view card last month as well as having their debut show on ESPN at the start of the year tonight’s event has the feeling of a massive blockbuster event similar to UFC 229, UFC 217, UFC 214, UFC 205, UFC 200, UFC 202, UFC 194, UFC 189 and many others. You can thank the nuclear white-hot rivalry between Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and former interim champ Colby Covington for the huge spark of interest as the two former training partners at America Top Team will fight for Welterweight gold. The rivalry first started in October 2017 at UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs. Machida in fact you could also call it the start of Covington turning full heel, previously calm and reserved after his dominant decision win over Demain Maia ‘Chaos’ Covington took the mic to make an infamous call out of Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in which he called the country of Brazil “a dump” as well as berating the crowd as “filthy animals”. If the call-out was looking for attention it defiantly received it as the clip went viral skyrocketing Colby’s name into mainstream MMA the UFC would reward this rise in popularity with an interim title-shot against Rafael dos Anjos. Despite the fight being relatively close in some aspects of some rounds, it was another clean win for Covington earning himself UFC interim gold and you’d think a title shot against Woodley but due to nasal surgery he booked prior in advance he couldn’t make the September cut off date the UFC wanted so they stripped Colby and rewarded the title-shot to Darren Till. Woodley smashed Till in 2 rounds with one of the best performances of his career and immediately went to taking every possible shot he could at Covington for not signing on the dotted line calling Colby an “embarrassment to the sport” he went into further detail with “He b**ched out let’s be real as soon as I was ready to fight pure silence from his end. Instagram accounts got taken down, nothing from him”. After more shots were thrown between the two it seemed the UFC was surprisingly angling for a match-up between Woodley versus Usman for the champ’s next title defense but any interest in that fight was put up in flames after Covington confront Woodley in an infamous brawl at American Top Team earlier this year. Punches were thrown, insults were lashed out, gym equipment was broken, it was an utter sh**show. The end result would be Woodley storming out leaving American Top Team and the fight officially being booked as there is no other hotter Welterweight fight to put on right now. The build-up has been beyond toxic family members, friends, culture all have been put on blast, just like his nickname suggests Colby lives up to the name ‘Chaos’. Woodley has admitted the trash talk is hard to deal with but promises it’ll only help in making a more dominant performance, “Colby Covington on my f***kin god… I have never ever in my adult life, ever wanted to beat a man so badly every punch is going to hurt my goal is a knockout with 1 second left in the fight so I make him suffer for 24 straight minutes make him question why he talked so much, why he’s in here and like Khabib, said if I smash his head for long enough maybe I can change his mind in the process”. Colby like mentioned before has been in prime form seeming to have fine-tuned his trash talk nowadays during the ceremonial weigh-ins he told Joe Rogan, “He ran for as long as he could but I finally caught up to him, I’ve been saying it for months I’m excited to make my first title-defense the rematch between Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley only on pay-per-view. The first fight had to happen behind doors, I’ll tell you what I have nothing to fear except for if starts rapping inside that octagon”. Stylistically will see if Covington can handle a power punch like Woodley with his huge volume of strikes, Dan Hardy on Inside the Octogan mentioned Woodley could use some of his power leg kicks to stifle the movement of Covington while ‘Chaos’ himself would be best to throw lead uppercuts at short range plus keep the pressure on the champ with his high-pressure style. As for who’s the better wrestler is also a very good question which we’ll have to find out tomorrow night. The co-main event is a salivating Middleweight match-up of two larger than life fighters as Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa fight in a possible title-eliminator bout this fight as scheduled 3 times beforehand with multiple injuries postponing the date in fact the two have a bit of mild rivalry between themselves as Yoel has openly accused Costa of taking steroids in the past, the Brazilian has fired back lampooning the Cuban as a steroid cheat himself when asked to sum up the tension between the two Costa said, “There’s love lost between us we don’t hate each other but don’t except their of us to be that much respect”. Similar to Colby, Costa loves to keep up a high volume of strikes mixing it up with fluid boxing to kickboxing to the occasional muay-thai but the durability plus explosive of Romero will of course be the biggest obstacle for the Brazilian. Even if he can make it into a very technical fight like Whittaker, Weidman, and Rockhold were able to briefly do Romero is easily capable of turning it into a dogfight in mere seconds.

Cory Sandhagen with a win hopes to find himself on track to a UFC title shot but first, he has to crack the rankings, the dynamic and powerful kickboxing base fighter has received a large amount of praise and hype as a possible next great Bantamweight champion. One of the believers is the current champ himself TJ Dillashaw who openly admitted to Sandhagen getting the better of him in sparring. In theory, Joe Soto should be a nightmare match-up for Sandhagen a high-level wrestler who can close distance really well should test unseen waters that the up-and-coming Bantamweight has never seen before. Mara Romero Borella versus Sijara Eubanks defiantly isn’t the most hyped fight on the card but it’ll be very interesting to see how Borella does on another short-notice fight. The Italian shot up in the Women’s Flyweight rankings after defeating Andrea Lee via a comfortable UD decision on short notice, her best asset during the fight was her ability to quickly mix up her game being able to in a flash jab then grab you. Eubanks will hopefully look to utilize her superior striking and control the distance to keep Borella from grappling admittedly Eubanks wasn’t too keen to stay on the card after her championship fight against Valentina Shevchenko was caned due to a Shevchenko injury but as she said: “can’t pass up on a paycheck especially one on short notice”. Opening the main-card former Bantamweight champion Cody ‘No Love’ Garbrandt has fallen to the current champ Dillashaw twice already the 2nd attempt saw him finished in the 1st round despite some early success catching TJ with some rushing hooks early on. One of the biggest factors contributing to Cody’s two losses was his inability to fight smart as he let his emotions get the better of him leading to Cody throwing caution to the wind with his chin exposed, Garbrandt in interviews has proclaimed to have now have a lid on his emotions during fights. Garbrandt talked about his masterclass against Cruz in one of the most beautiful one-sided beatdowns in MMA history ‘No Love’ had slick head movement crisp boxing and even mixed it up with the occasional few kicks that really did a number on Cruz he told reports that version of Garbrandt will be the only fighter they’ll see from here on out when asked about how he thinks the Bantamweight division will play out he said, “So Marlon [Moraes] and TJ [Dillashaw] both of them can get f***ked in all honesty but TJ beats him that lose to Cejudo will fuel him to have what I think will be the best performance of his entire career. After that I know I need to clear out the division to get another title-shot so after I beat Pedro [Munoz] a rematch with [Dominick] Cruz then I reclaim my title”. Munoz hasn’t said much but during an interview playful warned Cody “be sure to check those leg kicks” giving a glimpse into his game-plan.

Onto the prelims now the headliner a fascinating Lightweight fight between former UFC and WEC champion Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis versus the upcoming Sambo wrestling genius Islam Makhachev. Pettis although only (3-2) in his last 5 has seemed to have rejuvenated his career although he both lost to Dustin Poirer and Tony Ferguson they were both fight of the night bouts as both fighters are now fighting for an interim belt just next month which with a performance of the night victory over Michael Chiesa who’s now a ranked Welterweight via an early 2nd round submission this just shows the level of competition Pettis has been facing now he seems to be taking a lesser ranked fighter. So it would seem that way Makhachev a close friend to Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Islam is a very high-level Daganestien Sambo wrestler with some actually technical striking many have mentioned Makhachev hits way harder than one excepts but don’t take that to mean the two will have a stand-up war as Makhachev laid out his gameplan saying: “Rafael dos Anjos and Clay Guida were both able to maul him, point blank I’m a much better wrestler than both”. Another Russian prospect who fights on tonight’s prelims is Bantamweight Petr Yan who after cracking the top 15 Bantamweight rankings will now face his first ranked opponent in #12 Alejandro Perez. Both Yan and Perez prefer a stand-up battle but Perez does have some basic wrestling which if can utilize could be a key factor but Yan has yet to be taken down in his UFC career thus far. Capping off the preview and analysis two powerhouses look to take each others heads off with Khalil Rountree versus Sapareb Safarov, Abdul Razak Alhassan another powerhouse with a background in Judo looks to further cement himself as a prospect to put on watch in the Middleweight division against Charles Bryd a solid all-round veteran, plus two ranked Women’s Bantamweight’s in Lauren Murphy and Sarah Moras open the card for what is the UFC biggest show so far this year.

UFC 235: Woodley vs. Covington

Date: March Week 2 (2019) Saturday

Event posts will be a mixture of both fight play-by-plays as well as quick bullet points to summarize the event as a whole, only key fights like the fight of the night or fights, the performance of the night as well as fights that have a lot of significance like the main event, co-main, or key bout on the main-card or prelims will be covered. These play-by-plays are romanticized for dramatic effect but the results are legitimate, if the play-by-plays are too long or you don’t feel like reading them I’ll have a more brief summary of what happened plus the full card results at the bottom.

--------------------------------------------------------------

FIGHT PLAY-BY-PLAYS:

x5ODoS0.png

For years the hype around Isman Makhachev has a lot of parallels when compared to current Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov a dominant grappler with a pretty okay stand-up which with further development can become a consistent area of attack. This will be the Russian first jump up in competition in fighting a Top 10 mainstay of the division former champion Anthony Pettis who has had some promising performances as of note against the likes of Tony Ferguson, Micheal Chiesa, Dustin Poirier, and Jim Miller although (2-3) in his last 5 against these opponents Pettis has shown some of the high-level taekwondo striking that won him the belt back in 2013. Pettis has attributed this rejuvenation as his passion for the sport coming back at an all-time high meanwhile Makhchev promises a wrestler clinic the likes of Clay Guida and Rafael Dos Anjos has done to Pettis before.

Round 1

The two engage with strikes in the center of the octagon but neither can land a significant shot as punches roll off the shoulder. Pettis one-two is blocked causing Makhachev to back off, ‘Showtime’ keeps up the pressure launching a push kick to the body which is short then swings out a leaping right-hook. Makhachev parries it then lands two quick right hands, Pettis backs off launching a spinning heel kick to the head then the body in back-to-back concession but both are too short. Makhachev dives for the blast double however, Pettis pushes his head down landing on top then sprawls to get the fight back to the feet. The two jab at each other although Makhachev starts getting busier by using his jab to set up straights and hooks to the body. Makhachev lands a nice jab after slipping back the uppercut from Pettis then comes forward landing a short left hook to the body then grabs a hold of the single leg. But again Pettis push on the head then is able to get his leg free before Makhachev can push him against the cage. Pettis gets Makhachev to bite hard on a feint with straight-right opening him up to a huge left switch head kick to the dome!!! Makhachev eats it well but Pettis follows up with a clean jab to the chin then a roundhouse kick to the body!!! Makhachev throws a leg kick but doesn't make contact. Pettis then hits a counter leg kick which seems to frustrate Makhachev as he comes forward with jabs and body punches similar to earlier in the round this causes the two to exchange at a short distance. Pettis lands a jab and then hits Makhachev with a beauty of a straight right, then he follows it up with another jab and then scores with a right cross again. Makhachev whos right eye is starting to bruise up shut warily starts to circle around, looking for the opening he needs to initiate some grappling. Pettis has really found a home for the jab then straight right combination as he tags Makhachev with it another three times on the third combo he keeps up the pace with two quick leg kicks that land. Pettis hits a left roundhouse kick to the body then a double-jab to the body followed by a leg another leg kick as ‘Showtime’ is starting to freeze up Makhachev at short range who is just covering up not knowing how to respond, he does find his opening in the last 30 seconds of the round as Pettis comes up short on a push kick instead of shooting for the takedown Makhachev clinches up firing off 4 straight bus driver uppercuts grabbing the collar tie then lands 3 short hooks to the body then pushes Pettis up against the cage as the round ends.

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 10-9 Pettis

Sherdog: 10-9 Pettis

Blurcat: 10-9 Pettis

Round 2

Pettis opens the round with his most reliable source of attack landing a jab and then hits a nice straight right under the eye which opens a cut right on the bruising of the right eye. Pettis pumps out the jump missing most of them but hits a looping left hook to the body, however, this cause Pettis to get too close to Makhachev as he grabs a hold of ‘Showtime’ again unleashing 3 bus driver uppercuts then lands a clean elbow as the two separate, Makhachev flurries with four hooks to the head all of them are slipped but a massive left overhand lands behind the ear of Pettis as he tried to duck under it!!! Pettis nearly falls to the canvas but uses the cage to brace himself!!! Pettis lands a quick stiff head kick to the chin of Makhachev as he comes in to finish the fight!!! Makhachev shows a granite chin as grabs the leg of Pettis then lands a clean straight left hand!!! Dazed, Pettis continues to cover up against the cage as Makhachev grabs a hold of ‘Showtime’ controlling him with wrist control then a body lock Makhachev slows down the fight looking for the takedown but Pettis excellently cage walks to prevent Makhachev from getting the takedown twice!!! Seeing his takedown attempts as pointless Makhachev decides to grab the collar tie firing off uppercuts and elbows for a while before Pettis is able to get free and circle away. Pettis jab is parried then Makhachev briefly grabs the hand to land a right hand, Makhachev steps into the pocket, avoiding a few jabs on the way. Stepping in, Makhachev throws three quick hooks as Pettis covers up, two of which land, but misses with a vicious right overhand. As Pettis ducks under the overhand Pettis lands a right hook then uppercut as he comes back up. Pettis moves forward, constantly trying to pressure Makhachev into exchanging strikes. Makhachev slips then counters on the Pettis jab with lands two right hands in the, Pettis prevents him from following it up with a body kick to the ribs. Pettis is starting to outstrike Makhachev as he lands a left hand and then lands a roundhouse kick to the ribs again. Pettis can't hit a set-up left jab but then hits a nice right hook to the ribs. With the constant attack to the ribs Makhachev appeared to be going to try and get in close to the clinch as he tries to grab the hands, but Pettis took the initiative first by feinting with the set-up jab which causes Makhachev to blitzes into a beautiful right uppercut!!! Makhachev is knocked down by that shot!!! Pettis moves in quickly, kneeling beside Makhachev and starting to hammer down with punches!!! Pettis pounds away and Makhachev eats a few big strikes but is able to cover up and survive to the end of the round.

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 20-18 Pettis

Sherdog: 20-18 Pettis

Blurcat: 20-18 Pettis

Round 3

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Javier Mendez had some very intense words for Makhachev both are calling for the finish meanwhile Pettiis corner headed by Duke Roufus has a much calmer approach as he calls for Pettis to fight at long distance to get a decision win with long straight punches plus side and push kicks.

Makhachev quickly runs at Pettis to start the round he hits a right jab but doesn't connect with an overhand left allowing Pettis to slip then pull as he hits a left jab and also hits a kick side to the leg then a right head kick grazes the forehead!!! Makhachev still game lands a right jab but misses trying to land 2 more allowing Pettis to again slip and pull with the jab as well as nailing a right cross then push kick to the body. Pettis starts circling to run down the clock offering a few sidekicks to the leg but eventually Makhachev gets ‘Showtime’ to bite a fake double leg takedown using the hop step to get in then he smothers Pettis against the cage, then uses his dirty boxing skills to his advantage. Makhachev starts brutalizing Pettis as he unloads with massive bus driver uppercuts!!! A huge elbow to the nose of Pettis easily breaks it, baldy, as well as cause a huge cut on it!!!! Makhachev hits him with a short right uppercut. Makhachev surprisingly instead of looking for the takedown decides to disengage forcing the fight back to the center of the octagon. Makhachev’s corner is yelling at him “Attack! Attack! Attack”, Pettis looking a little dazed connects with a looping left hand then tries to capture him with another uppercut. But Makhachev reads him like a book in a stunning turn of the staples it’s Makhachev who slips then pulls with a jab and also lands cleanly with a powerful straight left!!! Pettis falls down catching himself with his two hands!!! Makhachev grabs his back mounting himself quickly!!! Makhachev pounds away with lefts!!! Pettis is eating some sickeningly heavy shots to the face before the fight is called off!!!!

OFFICAL RESULT:

Islam Makhachev def. Anthony Pettis via TKO [Mounted Punches] R3 (3:31)

[Fight Rating: Great]

After back-to-back losses to heated rival and current Bantamweight champ TJ Dillashaw, former champ Cody Garrabrant looks to his in his words “clear out the division” in hopes of eventually getting a 3rd fight with Dillashaw sometime down the line. ‘No Love’ like many has reconsigned that while he certainly has the skills to be champion once again he must be able to put a lid on his emotions which he promises he’ll do against Pedro Munhoz tonight. The Brazilian has had nothing but kind words for Garbrandt being (4-1) in his last 5 or (5-0) depending on who you ask as his last loss was a split decision loss against John Dodson, Pedro has been widely praised for insane durability plus solid power especially with his leg kicks. In fact, Munhoz jokingly told ‘No Love’ to ‘check those leg kicks’ for tonight’s upcoming Bantamweight bout.

Round 1

Garbrandt comes forward-firing off a jab to the body then an uppercut to the head both punches are blocked causing Munhoz to slightly move backwards doing so he lands a solid counter jab to the nose of Cody’ No Love’. Steps into the pocket keeping up the pressure surprisingly keeping Munhoz on the backfoot. Garbrandt can't hit a set-up left jab, but then he hits Munhoz with a straight right to the left side of the forehead. Garbrandt feints have Munhoz swinging short check hooks in mid-air, Munhoz rushes forward throws two quick right-hand punches but doesn't hit with either as Cody slips then ducks out of the way. The two fighters stand and trade strikes Munhoz hits a jab in the exchange to start it off then tries to hit a follow-up straight but Cody hits 3 straight hooks to the head then lands a nice looping hook to the body. Garbrandt uses a jab to set-up a big right hand that is just off the mark allowing Munhoz to score with a stinging calf kick to the left leg. Then Munhoz lands a nice right hook to the body as Garbrandt fails to land a lead straight right. Garbrandt keeps pushing forward, however, trapping Munhoz against the cage then nails a beautiful one-two that set-ups s a right hook to the chin then a right hook to the body. Cody continues to throw punches with Munhoz up against the cage landing two more hooks to the body but Munhoz ducks under a follow-up jab from Garbrandt landing a counter left hand which leads to an exchange in which Munhoz got the better of as he blocks a thunderous pistol of a looping left hook to land a nice right leg kick then step-in straight, Munhoz backs up before ‘No Love’ can respond then circles to his right to the center of the octagon. Garbrandt throws a two-punch combo but Munhoz parries them both landing a nice chopping leg kick to the right thigh of the former champion. Munhoz tries to become the aggressor as Garbrandt seems to be taking his foot off the gas to preserve energy, the Brazilian fires off a lead jab that comes up he also finds his 3 follow up hooks all slipped by Garbrandt who then taunts Munhoz sticking his tongue out while doing the chicken dance!!! Munhoz attempts to catch Cody whilst mid-taunting as fires of a leg kick that is checked by Garbrandt who then lands a left hand then a quick jab ending his combo with a big right hand as the round comes to an end.

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 10-9 Garbrandt

Sherdog: 10-9 Garbrandt

Round 2

Munhoz feints a jab swinging ou ta big right hand but it’s just short of the chin, allowing Garbrandt to counter with a clean right hook to the body that briefly stuns Munhoz as ‘No Love’ unloads with two quick hooks the head then a lead knee to the body. Garbrandt starts bobbing and weaving constantly keeping his guard up while swinging back n’ forward. Munhoz misses with a left hand then finds his leg kick checked giving Garbrandt the chance to counter with a straight to the body then a leg kick of his own. A one-two from Garbrandt lands then he slips a counter jab from Munhoz then pulls with a solid left hook to the forehead. Munhoz doesn't connect with a left jab but hits a kick to the lead leg however, he leaves himself open for Garbrandt to score with a jab and also hits a left to the body. Garbrandt feints a follow-up one-two landing a solid right hook to the body then left hook to the head. Munhoz’s left-hand slices through the guard of Cody ‘No Love’ but a switch leg kick fails to land as Garbrandt gets out of the way then comes back in with a superman jab that lands. Garbrandt feints with the jab from the outside leaving the two on the outside for a while Munhoz attempts to counter this by hop stepping into a big right overhand but it misses as Garbrandt slips it by moving his head to the right, the punch from Munhoz has him off balance and allowing Garbrandt to attack with a right hook straight to the chin followed by a left straight then double-jab. Garbrandt now starts to commit to throwing the jab instead of feinting it leaving Munhoz unable to get in close as he leg kicks from a distance with some do land but most are getting checked. Munhoz fakes the right leg kick as he instead comes up with a front kick to the face which Garbrandt blocks then grabs a hold of the right foot of Munhoz!!! ‘No Love’ lunges in with a devastating overhand with a lot of swing behind it but Munhoz eats it on the chin firing back with a flurry of 3 hooks to the body then he grazes Garbrandt with a short uppercut while ‘No Love’ backs up to start throwing jabs again Munhoz chases him down ducking under two jabs from Garbrandt then grabs a hold of his right-leg but ‘No Love’ times an excellent spin to get free from the takedown attempt. The two feints jabs and leg kicks for the last 30 seconds of the round until it comes to an end.

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 20-18 Garbrandt

Round 3

Garbrandt lands a left jab, but Munhoz evades a big right by landing a stunning spinning back kick to the body!!!! The two fighters come forward and engage. Garbrandt dodges a right hand and counter-attacks with a quick left jab and a right hook that is ducked by Monhuz who chops down Garbrandt’s lead leg kick two kick calf kicks. Munhoz steps hop stepping in and out looking light on his feet now he must have noticed his plotting style wasn’t having much success and is now changing up the game-plan a bit. Munhoz fires off 3 straight jabs but Garbrandt ducks and slips all of them countering with a left jab of his own and also connects cleanly with a check right hook as Munhoz attempt to come forward threw the punches attacking ‘No Love’ with a huge left overhand that Garbrandt ducks out of the way of ripping the body with a deflating right hook. Munhoz jumps out to long-distance to landing a solid roundhouse kick to the body then hops right back into close range yet misses with a big right hand, allowing Garbrandt to counter with a left jab and a right hand. Munhoz keeps up the pressure trapping ‘No Love’ against the cage but yet again misses a right cross as Cody slipped his head to the right allowing for another quick counter left jab and a right hook. Munhoz keeps pressing forward looking to land hop step overhand then get out before Garbrandt has a chance to counter. He nearly lands it after Garbrandt misses with the jab but the former champion continues to use some excellent head movement as he ducks under the overhand then attacks with a right hook to the ribs. Munhoz is able to catch him with a left jab as ‘No Love’ moves his head up but can't hit a right cross but hits a crunching kick to the thigh. Garbrandt swings out a huge overhand right, putting him off balance as he misses and allowing Munhoz to attack with a left roundhouse kick to the body. Munhoz starts aggressively putting on the pressure putting up a short jab that lands clean but a check right hook is slipped by ‘No Love’ who launches a counter-attack with a clean right hook to the body then grazes Munhoz with a venomous overhand right at the back of the ear. The two stand and trade as Munhoz is off-target with a left jab but lands a left hook. Garbrandt responds with his own left hook. Munhoz misses a right hook and gets countered with another left hook the two. These two continue to bang it out in the phonebooth till the end of the fight as Garbrandt slips past a right hook and counters with a left straight and a right hook that is avoided at the last second allowing Munhoz to land a left jab but misses with an attempted shot to the body. Garbrandt stays put and slices through the guard of Munhoz with a nice one-two and that’s the end of the fight.

After multiple reschedulings and cancellations, the undefeated Paulo Costa will have his chance to finally fight the boogeyman of the 185-pound division the ever terrifying Yoel Romero. The best way to describe this fight is to quote Joe Rogan “post-USADA scary” as two of the most ripped individuals will meet inside tonight’s co-main event. Romero in the past has said Costa is “100% on steroids” with Costa firing back accusing Romero himself of being a “steroid taking f**ker”.

Round 1

The two seem light on their feet hopping in and out feinting with strikes mainly leg kicks before Romero commits to a leaping straight-right that’s off to the right allowing Costa to land a counter jab then excellently feints with a right hook to get Romero’s guard up to the right leaving ‘The Soldier of God’ open to a brutal left head kick straight to the side of the forehead!!! Romero claps whilst shaking his head smiling then fires off a straight that Costa parries he then taunts Romero right back by doing a little shuffle dance in the middle of the octagon that Yoel smirks at. Romero starts becoming more station with a crossguard while Costa is still hopping on his feet he blitzes at Yoel throwing a flurry of 4 hooks starting with 2 to the body then the head only the last punch lands clean, Costa keeps up the pace landing a roundhouse kick to the body but with his hands by his side and being in close quarters Romero lands a short check-left hook right on the chin that backs up Costa as he wobbles!!! Romero grabs a hold of Costa landing two bus driver uppercuts then drops him with an elbow straight to the face!!! Yoel rains down hammer fists from the side until Costa is out cold!!!

We arrive at tonight’s main event for what likely is the most heated Welterweight championship fight in UFC history. MMA fans have been treated to a nuclear and at times hilarious build-up to UFC 235 main-event reigning Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and challenger Colby Covington have traded insults during the press conference, on social media, and even behind closed doors. Covingtons now infamous brawl with Woodley at American Top Team which caused ‘T-Wood’ to permanently leave the gym is well documented but the rivalry between the two has been simmering since 2017. To move past the Mount Everest size of trash talk the two have exchanged we’ve also gotten to see the origins of Colby ‘Choas’ Covington and as to why he made such a drastic change in his personality after being calm, reserved, respectful, and at times really quiet for most of his career pre-2017. With Covington revealing despite on a 4-fight win streak the UFC was considering parting ways with the rising Welterweight at the time during this time period he was booked to face Demian Maia in Brazil for late 2017 it was during the build-up Covington realized to quote, “Everyone is getting upset by the most minor of insults. I mean Chael [sonnen] got some of the biggest fights in UFC history ever since he started to make his tirade against Anderson Silva, these fighters nowadays are so sensitive it’s too easy for me to get them in their feelings”. Meanwhile, for Woodley, it’s been all about proving himself as the quote “greatest Welterweight of all time” a line ‘The Chosen One’ has been repeating for some time now as a possible 5th title defense and a win over the biggest of jaws in the UFC to him would secure his status as the greatest Welterweight champion in UFC plus he has also hinted at a possible move up to Middleweight to have a crack at becoming a two-division double champion. Tonight’s main-event will enter some of the biggest grudges matches in UFC history alongside Liddell vs. Ortiz, Evans vs. Jackson, Silva vs. Sonnen, Aldo vs. McGregor, Rockhold vs. Bisping, McGregor vs. Diaz, GSP vs. Diaz, Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor, and many others tonight Woodley vs. Covington will join them as here we go.

Round 1

In one of the boldest moves in UFC history, Colby Covington walks out to ‘I’ll beat you a**’ by Tryon Woodley with Woodley infamous dabble within the rap industry producing multiple songs along the way this is quite possibly one of the funniest taunts/ mind games in UFC history and one that will backfire blady if he loses tonight. Woodley also walks out to ‘I’ll beat you a**’ given that well it is his song both fighters walk to the octagon looking locked in both looking a little emotionless heading into the octagon until Bruce Buffer starts the introduction, Colby plays into the boos blowing kisses to the crowd and pointing at random members of the crowd as his name is read aloud and Woodley raises his two fists in the air taking in the moment after another chilling introduction by the veteran voice of the octagon. No surprises as there is no touching of the gloves.

Woodley starts up as always on the backfoot as Covington backs him up towards the cage, Woodley blitzes with a straight right to the face but the uppercut is blocked by the guard of Covington who grabs the body lock then traps Woodley against the cage. Covington starts unloading with short punches to the head and body as Woodley cage walks trying to reserve position but he walks into a trip from Colby who quickly gets the champ down, Woodley uses the cage well though as he backs his back up against it as Covington looking for a better position can’t seem to get it as Woodley gets back up but it still pinned against the cage. Despite Woodly trying multiple times to muscle his way out, Covington shows excellent grappling by keeping the champion against the cage after getting underhooks in Covington looks for the double-leg takedown but switches it to a judo throw which excellently works as he grabs Woodley back and with Colby throwing Woodley to the center of the octagon there is no cage for Woodley is to use to help himself up again. Covington attempts to get the underhooks whilst having Woodley’s back, Covington nearly gets but Woodley rolls nearly pushing Colby off him but he can’t shake Covington off him as he retains top control with full-guard. Colby starts unloading with some decent ground n’ pound both to the body and head, Woodley seems content to ride out the rest of the round on the bottom as he makes no significant moves to get back up or reverse position leading to a bit of a stall. Huge mistake from Woodley!!! As with little resistance, Covington grabs full-mount!!! Some stiff elbows open up a huge cut on the nose of Woodley then another cut is opened under the right eye of Woodley as well as he’s getting smashed with elbows from mount!!! Covington now starts mixing it with elbows and punches!!! Woodley is getting absolutely smashed!!! That’s it the ref calls it off Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington with a dominant destruction over Tyron Woodley!!! He is now the undisputed UFC Welterweight champion!!!

Covington rips the belt out of Dana White’s hand as he won’t allow the UFC president to wrap the belt around him, opting instead to put it on himself whilst draped in an American flag as Joe Rogan interviewed the newly crowned champ he called out one of the greatest fighters of all time as well as what many consider the greatest Welterweight of all time George-St Pierre. “I just took out one of the greatest if not the greatest Welterweight of all time in one round. You think what did to him was uncalled for? Wait to you see what I do to George-St Pierre I will finish him within seconds I promise America that, for years he robbed the people of pay-per-view money with boring snoozefest preferring to f**k his opponents instead of fighting. Every journalist who prayed for Woodley’s win tonight claims George is the greatest Welterweight of all time? You’re looking at the greatest Welterweight of all time right here!!!”.

A sold-out T-Mobile arena saw the birth of what could be the next great superstar within the UFC love him or hate him (most people already do hate him) Colby Covington is the new UFC Welterweight champion with a shocking 1st round finish over Tyron Woodley. It was one of greater wrestling clinics and performances by a challenger in UFC history as Woodley only landed 1 strike the entire fight as he got smothered by the suffocating high-pace style of Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington despite some excellent defense against the cage early on it proved to be fruitless as Colby would go on to get the TKO finish from the mount after successfully getting a judo throw which put Woodley away from the cage which he used to defend most of Covington’s wrestling up to that point as he looked rather clueless off his back despite the BJJ black belt. Covington would have a briefly heated dust-up with Dana White after ripping the belt from his hands signaling some potential trouble in paradise between the UFC president and his new champion. Covington would go on to dismiss the rest of the division calling for a super fight with George-St Pierre since GSP is only really looking for super fights/ big paydays it's unlikely he’ll actually face Covington but if the newly crowned Welterweight champ can keep up his run of success as well as continue to grow in popularity this match-up might become a reality sooner rather than later as all indications is that UFC 235 did very well with the pay-per-view buy as well as selling out the T-Mobile arena. Yoel Romero, according to Dana White has earned himself a 3rd crack at Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker with his minute and a half knockout over the previously undefeated Paulo Costa. Although White doesn't like to matchmake during his post-fight press conferences he said “I thought this was a guaranteed fight of the night but for Romero to knockout him out the way he did plus with Romero having two very close fights I thought he won the 2nd fight a trilogy seems to make the most sense”.

Relatively good night for prospects tonights as Cory Sandhagen, Islam Makhachev, and Petr Yan all won their respected fights Yan dominated the entire fight leading up to a sickening liver punch via a left hook TKO on the feet the Russian battered his opponent Alejandro Perez with crisp boxing combination while also showing some elite-level takedown defense as Perez went 0-8 on the night plus proved to be very physically strong as Perez wasn’t really able to back up Yan when they clinched. Cory Sandhagen and Islam Makhachev had more trouble than expected starting with Sandhagen he had a very competitive first round against former title-challenger Joe Soto the younger Sandhagen produce a versatile attack on kicks to the body and leg with sidekicks, switch kicks, oblique kicks, whilst also throwing lead uppercuts but despite this Sandhagen was very plotting with his attacks not much movement with the hips to get the full power leading to most of his attacks being relatively light. Soto showed excellent pose whenever Sandhagen opened up to attacks was he consistently caught him with some decent check right hooks to the chin as well as a straight body punch then leg kick combination. Sandhagen was landing more but when Soto did land it seemed his strikes had more pop to it with a very close 1st round Soto would clearly take the 2nd as he got two takedowns one off an ill-advised leg kick and another when he was able to back up Sandhagen against the cage to then, got a trip takedown to get Sandhagen a total of 4 minutes of top control time. Round 3 seemed to also be tilting in favor of Soto as he got an early single-leg takedown then hit a nice couple of soccer kicks to the body. Sandhagen was able to find his way up however to start landing some nice spinning kicks to the body plus more oblique kicks as well but Soto was right there in his face responding with the same check hooks and body straight then leg kick punches much like round one Sandhagen was landing more often but Soto’s strikes seemed to have the more pop behind them. Sandhagen’s output seemed to be lowering with Soto notice this he started throwing more punches up top but Sandhagen’s lower output was just to lure in Joe Soto as after Soto misses on a jab, left hook then left overhand, overhand combo Sandhagen would jump in mid-air to throw a spinning heel kick with his left leg but just missed, however, in a highlight that will forever be ingrained into the history of the UFC Sandhagen kept spinning landing on his left leg to only jump up in the air again to throw another mid-air spinning heel kick with his right leg that shut off Joe Soto’s lights off!!!! Islam Makhachev got the 3rd round TKO finish in a fight of the night bloody stand-up brawl against former-champion Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis to the surprise of many Makhachev was unable to takedown not landing a single takedown during the entire fight despite Pettis having a pretty big weakness to a high-pressure wrestler like Islam Makhachev himself the Russian simply was never to able to capitalize on. Despite this Makhachev was able to show off some impressive stand-up ability becoming only the 3rd fighter to finish Pettis via TKO after losing the first two rounds.

Cody Garbrandt was on form tonight with precise head movement whilst also making full utilization of his high-level boxing catching Munhoz constantly on the counter with all types of straight, hooks, uppercuts, it seemed ‘No Love’ was simply to do whatever he wanted in either despite a spirited effort from Munhoz who came forward to fight the entire time. During his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, he called for a rematch against Dominick Cruz or a fight against the winner of Raphael Assuncao vs. Sergio Pettis he told reports during the post-fight press conference, “Tonight I would of 100% knocked out everyone else in the Bantamweight division I know I would have beaten TJ tonight and I was off tonight which was the scariest thing. I see everyone in the division and I know not anyone one of them can beat me ever again”. Dominick Cruz welcome the challenge on Twitter as he wasn’t commentating tonight’s even as Joe Rogan, Jon Anik, and Daniel Cormier were in the booth tonight. Cruz tweeted, “Not bad Cody but the best version of yourself only beaten me 48-47 on the scorecards and that was me with plantar fasciitis in both my feet, so both of us at 100% who is really and factually better?”. Mara Romero Borella got a unanimous decision win to continue her climb up the Women’s Flyweight rankings Eubanks was just a step slower as Borella outworked her opponent for a UD win with her superior speed and dirty boxing against the cage although Eubanks was able to rock Borella midway through the 2nd round with a nice jab on the button then ducking right hook behind the ear which got one judge to give her one round. Khalil Rountree and Abdul Razak Alhassan both got impressive 1st round finish UFC president Dana White admitted that a “rise in competition is coming very” for both fighters in the upcoming future.

A week after the UFC’s most financially and commercially successful event of the year the worlds largest MMA promotion looks to strike while the iron is hot with a solid fight night card mainly carried by the main and co-main both of which are a fight of the nights and possible fight of the year contenders. Lightweight’s Justin Gaethje and Edson Barboza are both some of the UFC’s most entertaining fighters today, Barboza known for putting 100% behind every strike he throws faces the king of pure violence in Justin Gaethje although recently Gaethje was shown a more calculated approach with his 1st round knockout over James Vick in his last outing. Originally a Middleweight rematch between Luke Rockhold and Jacare Souza was to headline but an elbow injury from Jacare would leave the UFC without a main-event until both Gaethje and Barboza agreed to take the main-event bout on 4 weeks notice whilst Rochkold was booked to fight on a later date. Also coming in on short notice as always the man they called ‘Cowboy’ Donald Cerrone makes his return to the Lightweight division Cerrone returns to Lightweight after defeating Mike Perry at Welterweight via a 1st round armbar after having to pull out of his original return to Lightweight bout against Alexander Hernandez at UFC on ESPN+: Cejudo vs. Dillashaw he now faces sambo wrestler Rustam Khabilov the #12 Lightweight in the UFC. Khabilov was originally supposed to face the streaking Charles Oliveira but an Oliveira injury forced the Brazilian to pull out now facing Cerrone, Khabilov despite being more reserved has spoken out against Cerrone recently due to the Russian currently training at Jackson Wink MMA, 'Cowboy's bitter depurate from the gym is well documented as they closed their doors on Cerrone siding with Welterweight Mike Perry who was to be Cerrone's next opponent despite Cerrone being a longtime student of Greg Jackson. Cerrone on an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast criticized the gym for going downhill in the last couple of years it defiantly has left an awkward vibe between the two fighters. Whilst the two don’t necessarily hate each other there is some tension with ‘Cowboy’ in a pre-fight scrum interview saying, “I got nothing against him and I don’t mean to sound disrespectful but when I heard I could take on a ranked Lightweight on short notice I took it immediately and when I heard he trains from Jackson Wink it was like damn even better I get to stick it to Greg two times in a row”.

Khalibov during the same scrum interview said he thinks Cerrone is a “fake fighter and person” citing ‘Cowboy’ recent opening of the BMF Ranch as “disloyalty to Greg Jackson”. Gilbert Burns looks to crack the Welterweight rankings after moving his way up from Lightweight the Brazilian has shown new speed and power looking rejuvenated in his recent outings one of which includes a 25 second KO over the knockout artist Li Jingliang. Yancy Medeiros looks to keep this fight standing wanting to test out how much Burns has developed in terms of the striking department but the question at the end of the day is if Medeiros can keep the fight standing long enough. Two high-level BJJ black belts in Carlos Diego Ferreira and James Krause will meet inside the Lightweight division both Ferreira and Krause hope to set up a potential clash with a ranked opponent with a win in their next couple of outings. Starting off the main-card undefeated BJJ black-belt in Virna Jandiroba makes her UFC debut she faces fellow undefeated prospect Australia’s Nadia Kassem who is coming off a very impressive TKO win in her last outing at UFC 234. Kassem takes this fight on short notice and hopes to again get a quick TKO finish as she wants to test if Jandiroba is really “UFC caliber” in a full quote, “You always have these undefeated prospects who look amazing outside the UFC then once they come in they get destroyed. Once they’re tested they often don’t know how to deal with that and eventually break some do handle the pressure really well, with my knockout power we’ll get to see if she really is a UFC caliber of a fighter”. Another exciting Brazilian prospect making their debut is Johnny Walker an athletic freak with dangerous knockout power, he’ll face Bruno Cappelozza who has a decorated background in Muay-Thai much like Sheymon Moraes who faces veteran Dennis Bermudez who looks to follow an all-round mixed martial arts gameplan to snap his 4-fight losing streak. Guan Wang is a very promising kickboxing specialist prospect who faces undefeated Martin Buschkamp a slick BJJ black belt who despite not being that technically crisp has one-punch knockout power that can turn anyone’s lights out.

KSW 50: Gamrot vs. Gomi

Main-Event

Lightweight: [C] Mateusz Gamrot (14-0-1NC) vs. Takanori Gomi (36-15-1NC)

Co-Main

Light-Heavyweight: Marcin Wojcik (12-5) vs. Wanderlei Silva (35-14-1-1NC)

Main-Card

Lightweight: Cosmo Alexandre (7-1) vs. Vaso Bakocevic (24-12-1)

Openweight (206-400pds): Pawel Mikolajuw (3-3) vs. Anatoli Ciumac (11-13-1)

Lightweight: Igor Michaliszyn (4-2) vs. David Khachatryan (25-4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

84sd93b.png

Mateusz Garmot will attempt to once again retain the KSW Lightweight title as well as his undefeated record against MMA legend Takanori Gomi. Gamrot is a high-level aggressive grappler who likes to hand fight and throw short strikes from a very short range at the age of 28 he looks to be in the prime of his career and has recently expressed his desire to “become the greatest fighter Poland has ever seen”. Gomi on the other hand is 40 years old and some of the lighting fast hand speed that leads him to multiple wins accompanied by KO/TKO finishes has diminished due to aging, the match-up between the two has been heaving criticized but Gomi has promised an “all-time great” performance against the undefeated Polish Lightweight champion. The same can be said for the co-main with fellow MMA legend Wanderlei Silva facing off against Polish knockout artist Marcin Wojcik, Wanderlei currently is 42 years old while Wojcik is 29 with devasting knockout power in his hands many except Wojcik to violently knockout an aging Silva who’s chin has declined rapidly for years now but a huge possible advantage for “The Axe Murderer” is the two facts that Wojcik himself has a bit of a glass chin and is an extremely weak wrestler with little to no BJJ compared to the BJJ black belt of Silva. Cosmo Alexandre is a Brazilian former Muay-Thai champion who has some insane power in both his punches and kicks he faces Vaso Bakocevic a very technical brawler who’s very resilient. Pawel Mikolajuw and Anatoli Ciumac both weighed in at 300+ pounds for their Super-Heavyweight fight, to start off the main card KSW has added another Lightweight fight with Poland Igor Michaliszyn a solid all-around mixed martial artist at the age of 23 years old he has plenty of room to grow with this being only his 6th career-fight. David Khachatryan much like Michaliszyn is a very solid all-round fighter with a very good record the difference in experience is evident with Khachatryan being 8 years his senior (31-year-old) this fight will be a test to see if Michaliszyn ready for a rise in competition or still needs some time to develop for David Khachatryan it’s a chance to add another win to his record with a possible impressive victory he could potentially face the winner of tonights Lightweight Championship main-event in the near future.

Demetrious Johnson one of the greatest MMA fighters in the sport makes his ONE Championship debut against former ONE Flyweight champion, Ariano Moraes a relatively big Flyweight at 5’8” tall compared to the 5’3” Johnson the Brazilian coming off a very close split decision loss to current champ Geje Eustaquio. Johnson comes into the contest a former UFC Champion with the record holder for most title-defense with 11 consecutive defenses of his Flyweight title only to lose it to current UFC Flyweight champ Henry Cejudo in a very close split decision loss. Both men come into the bout with a lot to prove as well as lose stylistic wise Johnson should be technically the better fighter everywhere from striking to grappling but Moraes has some very respectable skills on both the feet and ground his background in Mau-Thai plus Kickboxing showcases his knowledge of the stand-up game plus he knows how to utilize his size on the ground. The build-up has been on of curiosity as Johnson said he was “very thrilled” to have a “much-needed change of scenery” after the MMA great had a public falling out with UFC president Dana White over payment, a match-up with Bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, plus the threat of the UFC cutting their Flyweight division entirely. Johnson in an interview with Ariel Helwani has said, “There’s no awkwardness or deceit going on with me and the higher-ups with ONE like there was with the UFC, you don’t see Chatri Sityodtong (CEO of ONE) going out and publicly trashing his fighters because they want to be paid what they deserve he instead gives us what we want when we want it and he negotiates like a professional. It’s refreshing I felt a burnout while fighting in the UFC, I felt that showed against Cejudo in the rematch it was still a very close fight but hey that’s all in the past it’s time for a new chapter with ONE Championship”.

Despite the awfully overmatched main-event, with Straweight champion Xiong Jing Nan, a punches in bunches striker with solid wrestling defense foundation faces BJJ Irene Cabello student with little to no striking she mainly empathizes in te grappling but with no fundamental striking, it will probably make her attempts to make this a fight on the mat unsuccessful. The only hope is if the champion makes a mistake that Cabello can capitalize on if not except one of the most one-sided fights in modern-day MMA history. The rest of the card is actually solid Ikuhisa Minowa and Ryuta Sakurai are two veteran wrestling legends Minowa is a more catch-wrestler whilst Sakurai is a more traditional one both are 40+ years old though so it might not be the most entertaining grappling exchange. Gasan Umalatov looks to use his Wushu style against Vaughn Anderson a Candian mixed martial artist who has recently been training with Chinses kickboxers for this upcoming bout. Finally to start off the main-card Matt Clemper quite possibly the greatest Judo fighter hailing from England in MMA today looks to keep his undefeated record intact against Jake Butler an accomplished wrestler who’ll look to steal the hype from Clemper as the Brit has some ambitious goals set for himself, “I want to be the great fighter to ever come out of England I truly do better than Michael Bisping, Darren Till, no disrespect to them I just want to be better I have high expectations of myself I’m doing this to prove to myself that I am who I think I am and that’s not only the greatest fighter coming out of Great Britain but as the best fighter in the world”.

UFC Fight Night: Barboza vs. Gaethje

Date: March Week 3 (2019) Saturday

OrQacga.png

Donald Cerrone finally makes his return to the Lightweight division tonight after having his original return to the division against Alexander Hernandez canceled earlier in the year, coming in once again on short notice (3 weeks) the man they call 'Cowboy' faces down with another pupil of his former gym Jackson Wink MMA's Rustam Khabilov will look to defeat Cerrone after 'Cowboy' publicly embarrassed the gym after defeating Mike Perry via a 1st round submission after Cerrone left the Jackson Wink publically criticizing the gym after his departure bashing the coaching staff and mainly the founder of the gym Greg Jackson himself. Khabilov has stated "this is the most important fight" in his career so far as with a victory not only will he avenge the gyms lose to ‘Cowboy’ but it’ll skyrocket his name into the mainstream MMA media. Greg Jackson has predicted a 1st round TKO victory for Khabilov, whilst Cerrone sees this as a stepping-stone to eventually fight for the 155-pound Lightweight title in the words of Donald Cerrone "Cowboy's back!" so let's stop wasting time and get this fight started right here and now.

Round 1

Cerrone throws out some straight strikes but most bounce off the shoulder or are absorbed by the guard of Khabilov, the Russian fires back but doesn't find the mark with a right hook. Cerrone doesn't connect with a right hand to the body as he tries to counter with more straight strikes but dosen’t set his feet properly whilst running at Khabilov. Setting it up with excellent timing, Khabilov comes forward and shoots for and gets the double-leg takedown Cerrone is on his back and pulls guard quickly locking up a guillotine once the fight hits the canvas!!! After a period of struggle, Khabilov pulls free as Cerrone didn't have it fully sunk in. Cerrone pulls Khabilov close and scores with a couple of short punches to the side of his head then starts hitting a few short elbows. Khabilov throws strikes from the top in retaliation after ‘Cowboy’ hits a fantastic elbow the slices open a cut over Khabilov’s right eye the Russian starts to lean back, preventing Cerrone from throwing any elbows to the top of the head. Eventually, Khabilov settles with having a stick-guard as he throws down some flying ground n’ pound to the body, with Khabilov having less control Cerrone attempts to scramble by attempting to push Khabilov away with his two feet as he rolls on his back to getaway!!! Khabilov reads this move perfectly and comes over the top to gain side control!!! Now it’s Cerrone’s time to eat a few elbows as now ‘Cowboy’ is opened up with some minors cuts around both of his eyes!!! Khabilov keeps the fight in side control until the round ends.

Unofficial Judges:

MMAJunkie: 10-9 Khabilov

Blurcat: 10-9 Khabilov

Sherdog: 10-9 Khabilov

Round 2

A jab lands from Khabilov, but Cerrone avoids a big right by tilting his head to the left then ‘Cowboy’ lands a counter left hand but doesn't hit the leg kick follow-up. The two fighters stare at each other whilst faking a few strikes as both are waiting for the other to make the first move, Cerrone strikes first connecting with a jab then feints a straight follow up to mask the right leg kick, but Khabilov avoids the kick by jumping out of range then jumping back in with a lead superman jab that lands on the forehead, still a little lose from the jumping Khabilov quickly throws three looping hooks that come up short which allows Cerrone lands a leg kick. Khabilov lands a left jab but doesn't connect with a right hand however, he closes distance well to grab the collar tie allowing the Russian to land a few short punches to the body then a bus driver uppercut that snaps Cerrone’s head up as they separated, Cerrone is able to land another leg kick in retaliation. That bus driver uppercut has seemed to waken up Cerrone who starts becoming the aggressor of the fight coming forward, walking down Khabilov as previously he was mostly on the backfoot. Khabilov hits a pair of jabs as Cerrone backs him up against the cage, Cerrone opens Khabilov up with a feint of his iconic head kick allowing ‘Cowboy’ to hit a couple of minor left hands, Cerrone then hits a left jab and then scores with a leg kick followed by a roundhouse kick to the body as Khabilov covers up against the cage. Cerrone grabs a hold of Khabilov landing a nice elbow right behind the left ear of Khabilov, then hits a few knees to the body. Khabilov threatens to reverse Cerrone with some excellent wrist control which forces Cerrone to disengage from the Muay-Thai clinch but he still has Khabilov trapped against the cage. Cerrone comes up short with a jab to the body, Khabilovcounters with a jab right on the nose of ‘Cowboy’. Cerrone comes up with an uppercut that is short but Cerrone comes in bliziting with three quick punches, landing two of them, but misses when he attempts a big head kick. With the kick missing Khabilov shoots in hard and fast with a blast double-leg the takedown is successful, Cerrone pulls guard!!! Cerrone did however grab a guillotine on the way down, and now threatens the submission!!! After a period of struggle Cerrone is able to fully apply the guillotine!!! Cerrone sweeps Khabilov as now ‘Cowboy’ is on top holding on tight with the guillotine!!! But Khabilov stubbornly holds on and does not tap!!! It looks like Khabilov is about to go out but miraculously Khabilov is able to escape!!! Cerrone on top transitions to side control then quickly locks in the armbar!!! Khabilov needn’t worry however as their is only seconds left in the round!!!

Unofficial Scorecards:

MMAJunkie: 19-19 (10-9 Cerrone)

Blurcat: 19-19 (10-9 Cerrone)

Sherdog: 19-19 ( 10-9 Cerrone)

Round 3

Cerrone starts using a jab then leg kick combo keeping slightly out of range as ‘Cowboy’ starts to constantly land the leg kicks whilst most of the set-p jabs are too short, parried, or just grazes the Russian. Cerrone hits another set-up jab and then fakes a leg kick opening Khabilov to a hard right hand!!! Cerrone comes forward looking to unload some more firing off a roundhouse kick that lands to the body, Khabilov hits two left hands after blocking a left-hook to the body on the counter. A jab lands for ‘Cowboy’, but the following kick to the body is too slow as he starts showing some fatigue this allows Khabilov to catch it!!! Holding onto the leg Khabilov tries for a single-leg takedown but Khabilov also starts to show some fatigue as he looks slow whilst trying to out-grapple Cerrone. Unable to complete the takedown, Khabilov instead pushes Cerrone up against the cage landing some short punches to the face. Khabilov looks for a foot stomp but Cerrone works enough space that he can pull clear and circle out. ‘Cowboy’ starts chopping down the lead leg of after landing a multitude of them Cerrone goes to the body with a push kicks then a left hand, but his big right-hand follow-up misses as Khabilov blocks it then lands a check right hook that briefly gets Cerrone to back up as it slightly buckled him briefly. Cerrone connects with a nice jab and then catches Khabilov with a front kick to the face then a right hook whilst blitzing in. Cerrone throws 3 hooks in close landing 2 of them, Khabilov backs up hitting a pair of jabs but Cerrone responds landing a left hand and then he catches Khabilov with a right roundhouse kick to the body. Khabilov’s nose starts to bleed and his cut over his eye from round 1 is re-opened as the Russian is becoming a bloody mess plus his lead leg is turning purple!!! Cerrone lands a jab and then hits a straight right on the button!!! Cerrone taunts Khabilov to start throwing demanding a “barnburner”, Cerrone lands another jab but misses with a low kick. Khabilov uses this miss to hit a couple of jabs but has a right hand taken on the gloves. Cerrone counts with a lead elbow to the side of the forehead then lands a jab and a right cross!!! Khabilov slouches over covering up he’s hurt!!! Cerrone starts spamming hooks but Khabilov bobs and weaves past all of them as he uses this head movement to get in close and grab a hold of Cerrone!!! Khabilov gets hold of the body lock nearly tripping Cerrone to the ground but ‘Cowboy’ base stays steady as Khabilov settles for pushing him up against the cage. Whilst standing Khabilov surprises everyone by grabbing ahold of Cerrone’s back then get’s the backpack looking for the rear-naked choke!!! With only 20 seconds left Cerrone is in huge trouble as Khabilov successfully gets both hooks in as he gets the arm under the chin and starts to squeeze!!! Cerrone jumps up and slams Khabilov on the ground whilst Khabilov has a hold of his back hoping to loosen the hold!!! But with both hooks in and great control, Khabilov still has a hold of the choke!!! There’s only a couple of seconds left on the clock Cerrone is just trying to survive!!! He dosen’t he goes out with only 4 seconds left in the fight!!!

Rustam Khabilov raises his arms in victory in a spectacular come from behind victory he celebrates with his coaches at Jackson Wink MMA taking time to bask in this victory it clearly meant a lot to both him and his team!!!

What's not to love about both Edson Barboza and Justin Gaethje? Both have given UFC fans epic highlight-reel knockouts and fight of the year contenders over the course of their entire careers and for both with a victory will have them further climb up the 155-pound ladder into serious title contention. Both come into tonight on relatively short notice much like Donald Cerrone before them the original main-event for tonight was suppose to be a rematch between Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo Souza was canceled due to a serious elbow injury to Souza. Taking this fight on a few weeks notice both have admitted they'll be looking for an early 1st or 2nd round finish as they'll look for a quick finish tonight due to the short training camps on both ends.

Round 1

Gaethje starts the fight landing a jab then unloads with a three-punch flurry landing them but misses with a low kick. Barboza counters with a hard jab and also connects with a thumping kick to the thigh. Gaethje feints a straight but misses baldy as Barboza pulls back then lands a jab and also lands a spin kick to the body the Brazilian then hits another jab followed by a spinning back kick to the ribs. Looking a bit tense, Gaethje starts hopping around light on his feet as he moves around the cage. After feinting a one-two Gaethje hits a straight-right however leaves his guard down causing Barboza to swing out a thunderous head kick that is just off the mark as Gaethje moves his head out of the way. Instead of counter-attacking Gaethje covers up as Barboza hits a two-punch combination, a quick left and a straight right then a nice leg kick that caused Gaethje left leg to wobble a little. Barboza scores with a jab but doesn't connect with a right hand up top. Gaethje lands a quick punch and then hits a left hook right to the liver!!! Barboza slouches over in pain as he makes his way to the cage. Gaethje fakes a flurry of punches before cracking Barboza with an overhand to the chin!!! Barboza looks punch-drunk!!! He’s in big trouble! He is covering up as best as he can!!! Gaethje goes under the guard and nails Barboza with a right uppercut then gets clocked with a right hand to the side of the head and goes down against the cage hard!!! Gaethje starts pounding away on Barboza, looking to finish him off!!! Gaethje fires away and Barboza is eating powerful shot after powerful shot until the referee pulls him off!!!

Justin Gaethje and Rustam Khabilov have validated themselves as top Lightweight contenders with impressive victories tonight, Gaethje after a slow start showed power and patience with his 1st round victory over Edson Barboza the Brazilian crowd, as well as Barboza himself, was devastated by the result with this being Barboza’s 3rd loss out of his last 5 fights he announced he would move down a weight-class to the Featherweight division after spending his entire UFC-venture so far at Lightweight he announced the move 5 days later on Twitter where he congratulated Gaethje for his win typing “You hit like a rocketship”. With his victory, Gaethje took the mic to call out fan favorites Dustin Poirier to a rematch and Nate Diaz the callouts had some serious bad intentions behind them to quote, “I fully believe I’m a better fighter than Dustin I was winning our first fight up until what I feel was a lucky punch he hit like a b**ch the entire fight then suddenly drops me with one, it’s the literal definition of a lucky punch if you ask me. I’d also like to drill a f**kin hole through Nate Diaz’s head he’s more a Twitter troll nowadays then an actual fighter”. Rustam Khabilov also had some harsh words whilst in victory proclaiming, “This whats right I feel this victory shows loyalty and kindness will forever defeat disloyalty and deception, me and my teammates over at Jackson Wink now exactly who Donald Cerrone is he isn’t a nice guy far from it very selfish this loss will help him become a better person hopefully”. Khabilov would have a huge afterparty with his Jackson Wink coaches and fellow teammates on the victory as Khabilov now eyes a top-10 ranked Lightweight contender. Cerrone in a post-fight interview with Ariel Helwani das after the evet said the loss has “driven me f**kin crazy” adding “he acts like I wasn’t kicking his ass up and down that octagon until he pulled off a fluke submission then he and Greg start talking about this is a victory for good? And characterize me as some bad guy? This isn’t a fairy tale but if your so insecure that you have to tell the fans and media your some knight in shining armor so be it but don’t say I’m the bad guy when we all know Greg you f**ked me over and many other fighters for years. You’re still doing it now and you’re running that gym which was once the best gym in MMA into the f**kin ground”. Cerrone has requested an immediate rematch but is open to other fights that interest him if offered. The rest of the main card was a BJJ enthusiast’s delight as 4 of 5 main card fights finished via submission.

Gilbert Bruns has bursted onto the top 15 at Welterweight dominating Yancy Medeiros the 1st round started slow Burns showed a lot of feints to start out whilst the two traded leg kicks for a majority of the round with a minute and a half left Burn’s got Medeiros to bite a feinting jab which opened him up to a devastating overhand to the right side of the forehead that instantly put Medeiros on his ass while he survived the 1st round he spent the rest of the fight in a defensive mode only really offering defensive jabs and leg kicks when he knew there was no way he could get caught again. Burn’s would march him down during the 2nd round getting him up against the cage smother him with Muay-Thai knees to the body plus some dirty boxing after successfully getting Medeiros to bite on another jab then overhand combo feint the Brazilian got the single-leg then in a scramble took the Hawaiians back where he eventually got the rear-naked choke. “Welterweight’s I’ve got next!!! Colby Covington, you talk so much trash about Brazil I’ll make you eat every single one of your words just watch me that belt is mine”. Burn’s told Jon Anik during his post-fight interview. James Krause and Virna Jandiroba got the exact same submission at the exact same time from nearly the exact same position in one of MMA’s most cartoonish and meme-worthy moments of the year. Both pulled of the guillotine after grabbing a hold of their opponents then immediately pulling guard to get the 1st round submission finish. Johnny Walker got his 1st win inside the UFC with a jaw-dropping knockout literally as he broke Bruno Cappelozza’s jaw with a straight-right on the chin which turned his lights out it was a beautiful knockout sequence as Walker used two front kicks to the body followed it up with a straight to the body then knocked Cappelozza with the straight-right to the chin as Cappelozza attempted to counter with an overhand multiple times but was just a few inches short every time.

Sheymon Moraes handed Dennis Bermudez his 5th straight loss in a very close split decision, Bermudez successfully got a takedown in every round going a successful 4 for 4 on the takedowns getting 2 in the final round he had a total of 7 minutes out of the total 15 minutes contested bout but on the feet, Moraes often got the better of Bermudez who spammed the jab-jab then overhand combo for most of the fight meanwhile Moraes had a much more versatile offensive game-plan implementing head kick plus bodywork his strikes generally had way more pop behind them although never able to quite find a strike on the chin that would put Bermudez out. It was a gusty and hard-fought fight most however scored it in favour of Bermudez to the tune of 29-28 or 30-27 but the judges scored a split decision that they gave to the Brazilian prospect Sheymon Moraes who improves to (3-1) inside the UFC in what some have called “a hometown decision”. Finally, two impressive performance of the night knockouts included Martin Buschkamp got an impressive finish over the previously (20-1) Chinese prospect Guan Wang to the surprise of many Buschkamp a BJJ black belt decided to go more a more stand-up heavy gameplan as the two exchanged in a kickboxing match-up for most of the fight with Wang having a nationally accomplished background in kickboxing it would be safe to assume he’d easily dominate the much more grappling heavy Buschkamp but to the surprise of everyone it was a close bout while it lasted. Wang was feinting and faking more but typically was a sniper landing one punch or kick then never following up with another after that he also made Buschkamp miss a lot as the Brazilians striking clearly wasn’t as technically sound but technicality didn’t matter as with a minute left in the 1st after ducking under an overhand Buschkamp would unleads a lethal lead elbow to the side of the forehead whilst Wang attempted to bring his head back up swinging out a straight the shot wobbled him then a follow-up flurry of hooks put him down with punches and elbows finishing him off on the ground. Jennifer Maia surprised everyone by putting on a striking clinic that’s right a striking clinic against Alex Davis, the improvements to Maia’s stand-up was quite shocking as she showed a great jab plus body punches not once did Maia a now BJJ black belt take the fight to the ground as Davis had nothing in response eventually a jab, jab, uppercut then feint a straight-right to throw an overhand combo put Davis out cold after the victory Maia credit the improvements in her striking to her coaches plus hard work she also called out UFC Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko to match-up later this year.
