Feedback from WCW Thunder - from DDTdigest.com

Dale from Texas sends the following in. "When will WCW learn that Buff Bagwell is washed up? It's good to see Lex Luger has been given his pink slip, but jesus f'n c, those two were equally as bad. I understand Buff's not a particularly good influence in the backstage set up either."
Jack sent this in from after the show. "Boy, WCW are doing a good job at keeping things kayfabe. Last night, prior to the show there was a lot of autograph signings, guys who haven't been seen on WCW Television in a long time were there. Mark Jindrak, Kaz Hayashi, Jamie Knoble, Dustin Rhodes and the like. I noticed Diamond Dallas Page was absent. Previously as you know WCW made a mockery of a lot of their storylines by breaking kayfabe on many situations. Add to that that Kevin Nash was actually escorted into the arena by police officers, with a very worried look on his face. Is Kayfabe back in the south?"
Ricardo sent this in. "WCW mustn't be paying their electricity bills. When the Booker T interview was going down, the lights went out with Booker T's face on the big screen alone. A couple of amigos behind me started shouting out 'PAY YOUR BILLS'. Classic. Doug Dillinger told them to pipe it."
Mick sends this in. "Last night, Ric Flair received a massive pop. I gotta say, I hope Ric's retirement is his own doing. I swear to god, half the crowd even down here in Puerto Rico were willing to trash the arena if there was any sign of this being just another storyline or thre being any element of truth in the rumour that he's heading up to the World Wrestling Federation."
Carlos sent this in post show. "Doug Dillinger and WCW cut out a lot of signs last night. A lot of pro WWF signs were taken down. Even some e-fed signs came down. They seem to take this all fairly serious these days. In other news, there was some redneck who tried to jump the fence to get to Big Poppa Pump, security were trying to hold him back, and while Big Poppa Pump was brawling out of the ring he made a conscious effort to "accidentally" be whipped into the steel fence and "accidentally" elbow the rednecks head. Hahahaha classic stuff. He then posed for the fans."
Enrico sent this in. "When is Scotty Hall getting out of the alco-anonymous club? I gotta say, big Kev doesn't seem to be much worth supporting these days without his Cuban friend. Also, what the hell is up with this storyline with Diamond Dallas Page? I gotsto agree with the report where my man Stallion, first off, big hows it hanging to you dawg, thinks this storyline is kinda too New Yorkish. The best thing that's happened to them two the last two to three years was seeing them job out to the Perfect Event."
Felix wrote in and said "Miss Hanc*ck, man, she's a hot man. Hot hot hot. She's going all the way to the bank. No matter if WCW folds, she'd get a job up at the WWF. Do you reckon she'll ever pose for Playboy? Man, that'd be sweet. Gotta say though, hell of a gal, she came out and signed an autograph for us and spent some time talking to us. Even though my younger bro was ogling her... No class, you only do that when she looks away man."

Or Tomato Sauce I'm not sure
Either way, everyone was wailing on everyone!
But you know what, we ran out of time fans!
Coincidental?
I think not!

B+ Rating: B Attendance: 5,000 1,598,450 on TNT - a bit disappointing, but its to be expected with no advanced booking really available for the last two matches RAW is WAR was B-, drawing 14,736 to the Cattle Market in Puerto Rico They got 2,638,112 viewers on the box. So there viewership was also down approximately 200,000 - which is at least some form of a sobering thought. NB: Not an awesome show, but a show where I tried to build up towards Greed a bit more. The attendance was down, I think largely because I only advance booked one match, I'd have loved to have advanced booked the last two matches but you can't in TEW... damn. Maybe thats something that can be addressed for the next TEW? Thunder will be done over the weekend, gotta lot study to do peeps! Look forward to your feedback, remember, I will build your feedback into my style of show writing!

...
Greed Taking Shape World Championship Wrestling has confirmed some of the matches for WCW's next pay-per-view extravaganza, Greed, coming to us this Sunday. The below panel of wrestling "experts" offered their views on who they thought would take the matches. The Panel

JD Herbert: Owner of www.wrestlingisgoodmmkay.com
Raymond Castelle: Little remembered journeyman wrestler in the era of the territories, his career spanning from the carnie days of the early 60s through to the early 80s before the wrestling explosion
Maryse Carpenter: Former valet in several southern promotions in the late 80s to early 90s
WCW World Heavyweight Championship - Booker T (c) v "The Genetic Freak" Big Poppa Pump JD Herbert: I think the inactivity of Booker T will count against him. Big Poppa Pump to get the win. Raymond Castelle: Big Poppa Pump here, he probably has the best physique in the industry and all told he'll stop at nothing to get the win. Maryse Carpenter: Y'all, I'm a sucker for a good man overcoming the odds, so Booker T to come back from injury for me. WCW United States Championship - Sean O'Haire (c) v "That 70's Guy" Mike Awesome JD Herbert: Hard one to tip, you'd say neither has really had a chance to fully establish much authority of late. I'll go with O'Haire to retain. Raymond Castelle: I like Awesome here, I think he's been badly used at the moment, but nevertheless, he'll overcome that to get the win. Maryse Carpenter: Awesome. He's chiseled, he's buff, come get some. GRROWWWWLL! Number one contendorship to the WCW World Heavyweight Championship - winner gets to fight for the title at SuperBrawl Goldberg v "Positively" Chris Kanyon JD Herbert: Goldberg. And what's more, he'll win all the way up to SuperBrawl - and beyond. Raymond Castelle: I sense a monster Goldberg push again. Maryse Carpenter: How do you beat Goldberg? He's so menacing. Goldberg for me. "Mr Monday Night" Rob Van Dam v "The Franchise" Shane Douglas JD Herbert: Both former ECW veterans, I predict Douglas to get the win here. Raymond Castelle: Not long ago Douglas battling Ric Flair, and doing a good job of it. I take that as a sign that WCW think highly of him. Douglas to get the win. Maryse Carpenter: I like RVD. I think he's going to get pushed as a contendor. "The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett v Vader JD Herbert: Jarrett will pull out all the stops, but it won't be enough. Vader. Raymond Castelle: Fought Jarrett's old man actually, like JD says, Jarrett will pull out all the stops, but I predict with that he'll get the win. Maryse Carpenter: I predict Vader. Ric Flair's Final Match "Nature Boy" Ric Flair v Sting JD Herbert: Who here won't tear up? Probably all of us because WCW will book it as some ridiculous squash to get a super heel over. Flair to get the W. Raymond Castelle: C'mon Ric! He was great when he was younger in the back with the boys, so I'm amping for him. Maryse Carpenter: Sting. Ric's retiring which is bad and all y'all, but they need to push their remaining talent. Stinger. WCW World Heavyweight Tag Team Championships Perfect Event (c) v The Filthy Animals JD Herbert: Perfect Event. Being pushed well. Raymond Castelle: Perfect Event to win. Maryse Carpenter: Billy Kidman is a real hunk, so I go for Filthy Animals. Wouldn't mind him giving me a filthy san****, hey, you can't publish that, no, what do you mean you got it on tape? The New North South Connection v The Mamalukes JD Herbert: The next big things in the tag division, the New North South Connection for me. Raymond Castelle: Love what The New North South Connection is doing, but I sense an upset. Mamalukes. Maryse Carpenter: Johnny the Bull is cute, so Mamalukes. "The New Generation" Rey Mysterio Jr v Dustin Rhodes JD Herbert: Where'd this match come from? Dustin Rhodes, he's too strong. Raymond Castelle: I sense Dusty Jr. Dusty's a great guy, so's his young fella. Maryse Carpenter: Yep, Dustin for me too. WCW Hardcore Championship "Dog Faced Gremlin" Rick Steiner (c) v Crowbar v "The Beast from the East" Bam Bam Bigelow JD Herbert: Slobber knocker. I think this belt is not good enough for Rick, so Crowbar to get the win. Raymond Castelle: I agree with that, but have gone Bam Bam Bigelow. Maryse Carpenter: I'll stick with the champ. International Strike Force v Beauty and the Beast JD Herbert: International Strike Force. Rection's experience is too much. Raymond Castelle: Agree, you can't knock experience. Maryse Carpenter: I disagree, Bautista and Orton have something special. In more ways than one too. WCW Cruiserweight Championship "Sugar" Shane Helms (c) v Chavo Guerrero Jr v "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels v "The Real Deal" AJ Styles JD Herbert: Helms to retain. He's a good champion. Raymond Castelle: I think AJ Styles to come from nowhere. He's got a load of talent and putting the belt on him make sense. Maryse Carpenter: I predict Daniels myself. "Sultan of Swing" Juventud Guerrera and ? v The New Sensations ("Above Average" Mike Sanders and Mark Jindrak JD Herbert: I haven't got a razoo, all depends who Juvi's tag team partner is. I suspect it's someone inhouse, someone like Bryan Adams? In that case, Juvi's team. Raymond Castelle: I reckon its' someone from out of town myself. La Parka? Anyways, New Sensations. Maryse Carpenter: New Sensations baby. Good website too. Not the adult one, of course there's another one, what would you know? Other Tips JD Herbert: Something's going down in the Flair/Sting match. I smell a squash from an outsider. Raymond Castelle: Me too. I sense also the Nash/Page rivalry will end somehow. Maryse Carpenter: And thank christ for that.
Acknowledgements: Thanks to Undertaker 666 for the pics for Maryse Carpenter, Raymond Castelle, JD Herbert.

Thanks for that mate. Glad you enjoyed it. I was so torn, over and over and over again as I slept about how to end that match. Honestly, even though this is a "game", a few times in my sleep I'd wake up thinking of how it should finish, and each and every time it was different. It felt wrong for Ric to lose, and it would have been wrong to lose to anyone else but Sting in WCW at that time, but knowing Ric, he'd have wanted a guy like Sting or Arn Anderson if he was still around to get a boost out of it all. Every couple of days since Greed I'd look and I'd see no response, so I was a little bit sceptical if infact it was well received - perhaps no bites, because people were not happy with the card? Guys - sorry this is slowing down a little, I have been caught up with studies (yay, Accounting and Economic subjects for my degree - one's boring, one's a difficult concept for me) but it will keep progressing. In between times I hope to post some more backstory stuff, obviously each card does take some time and dedication to put up but a quick backstory update every couple of days is something I should focus on. Please do give your thoughts on Greed, and any ideas you may have. As you can see, once or twice I have integrated Stallion's comments into my new style of report posting, and I'm more than happy to keep bouncing your ideas in there to keep it interesting. Onwards, and upwards to SuperBrawl Revenge - have a couple of ideas floating around which I hope you will enjoy when they are played out. WCW forever.

It was an epic struggle
Tables were broken
Chairs were bent crooked
Pain was sent everywhere
Bones were sent quiverring
Adults gasped in anguish at each chaotic fall
High rung drop kicks and punches lowering their opponent to the mat were common
How both men went 16 minutes under such ferocious conditions, I'll never know
The intensity was outlandish
Even in between the use of the TLC equipment, each man innovated
Booker T used a variety of kicks
Even some new ones in his arsenal
And "Positively" Chris Kanyon is reverred worldwide as the "Innovator of Offence"
So he too brought in a lot of moves, suplexes, modified pump handle slams, modified DDTs, modified pile drivers that were spell binding
Finally, after a tired fist fight at the top of a ladder, Booker T fell to the mat. Even though Booker T lunged for the ladder, trying to dislodge Kanyon, Kanyon was able to reach the contract.. to seal the deal fos SuperBrawl Revenge! Your winner, Chris Kanyon!

A Chaos!!!

Our cameras then went backstage
A brawl had broken out between Big Poppa Pump and Sting
Even though they'd already beaten each other to a pulp, the stakes were high, and they soon ended up in the catering area
There nearby, shaking hands and what not were Ric Flair, Rey Mysterio Jr and Rob Van Dam who tried to hold back Big Poppa Pump, before that could happen though DDP and Shane Douglas came by and started getting involved!
All of a sudden, Vince Russo even turned up complete in armoured gear!
As Nitro went off the air, chaos reigned supreme!

B- Overall Rating: B Comments: They felt we used Flair too much (we switched him to authority figure - damn). The crowd feels we don't have many hot storylines running currently. Att: 9,554 Nitro drew 1,170,508 on TNT. RAW is WAR got 2,676,896 for a B show in front of 10,000 at the Independence Arena in the Mid Atlantic. Bit disappointing that we dropped a load of viewers this week. Bit disappointed with the overall rating. I personally really liked the show... guess that's because I booked it? :-P Look forward to hearing your thoughts. I'm going to switch Flair back to a semi-active wrestler push as I need to keep him on the show as he's a focal point of it all and I suspect if he was a SAW we'd have got an A, and not a B and significantly improved TV ratings.

Wow I must say I am loving this Diary I really enjoyed Greed. I was abit surprised that you booked Sting to go over Ric in his last match but as you said if he wanted to lose to anyone in his last match it would be sting! Im glad Booker and Steiner Feud is over I started to get alittle bored with it and as for storylines I would like Sean O'Haire to be more invovled in them his the US champ after all. Maybe get him invovled in a storyline with someone like DDP? just to help get to the next level I hope to see more of a Russo/Flair storyline maybe end it with a if Ric wins he 100% control over WCW and if Russo wins Ric leaves WCW? ill be reading :D

So was the Flair retirment thing a work after all? Not that I mind Flair staying around but lets hope he does not step into the ring again and make WCW look stupid like all thoses times workers retired and came back the very next week! Its intersting how the rosters seem to be spliting down the middle with now the two presidents (I just hope we dont see a brand split). Nash vs. Chavo - Lets Go Vanilla Midgets! I thought the show was really good as well and I was suprised it got low ratings. Looking foward to the TV Title Tounrament!

Following the likes of David Arquette, Vince Russo, winning it and Tank Abbott being scheduled to win it, it totally devalued it IMO. Thanks for your thoughts, glad you're enjoying it! But I'm a mad Ric Flair mark and want somehow to see him stay involved in the joint... I think at the season finale of Thunder (we're not renewing that contract), it'll become a little bit clearer where thats heading. But no, he definitely won't be getting back in the squared circle, as much as I'd like him to. Hope that answers that. Certainly no brand split - I hate it with the WWE. WCW v WWF has a ring to it, Raw v SmackDown does not. One's intense. One's mickey mouse fantasy. All in my opinion of course. So let me be the first to say you'll never see a split in WCW.
Question for you brother. Do you think I can steal your style of writing up the cards while adding a little flair of my own to it? I just wanted to ask you first becasue you pioneered it in the diarys. Thanks brother!
Absolutely. Without a doubt. It's just an adaptation on that wonderful site ddtdigest.com. A little Flair of your own? Sounds like a pun of "I'm calling this my Flair for the Gold" Starrcade 83.

...
Who Will Win Television Glory? A preview by Anita Joint For www.wrestlingisgoodmmkay.com "Nature Boy" Ric Flair dropped a number of bomb shells at the latest edition of Monday Nitro, not least of all that the coveted WCW World Television Championship would be making a comeback, and that a sixteen man tournament would start at Thunder to crown the winner the holder of the belt. Once a coveted belt that was mandatorily defended at each television showing was treated as garbage by Vince Russo, literally. Infact, Scott Hall threw the title into the garbage, before it was taken out of the garbage by veteran "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. However, the title has a prolific lineage of great champions, including Booker T, Lord Steven Regal, Stunning Steve Austin, Living Legend Larry Zbysko, Diamond Dallas Page, The Enforcer Arn Anderson, Beautiful Bobby Eaton, Chris Benoit, Ultimo Dragon, Chris Jericho and many other great champions in it's time within the National Wrestling Alliance prior to it being taken under WCW control. The sixteen men chosen to compete for the WCW World Television Championship were leaked this morning on www.wcw.com. This preview takes a look at all sixteen contendors and their prospects. Mark Jindrak: Has already held the WCW World Tag Team Championship with current United States Champion Sean O'Haire. Is a product of the WCW Powerplant system, and a member of the Natural Born Thrillers. Experience may count against him, but is a kid that the Powerplant rated very highly. "Mr Monday Night" Rob Van Dam: Recently acquired from Extreme Championship Wrestling, and has been promoted heavily since that time. A very athletic worker who has great agility for a man of reasonable size. We think Rob has a very real chance of taking out the championship. "The Cat" Ernest Miller: Has two outstanding skills; his proficiency in karate and his ability to wind up a crowd or an opponent on the stick. Not sure if this will be enough to advance him far in the tournament. Dustin Rhodes: Dustin's father "The American Dream" Dustin Rhodes had a ripping fued over this very belt in the mid 1980's with Tully Blanchard of the Four Horsemen, and his canniving valet Baby Doll. However, that's part of Dustin's problem. He has very much failed to get out of Dusty's limelight in WCW. Found success in the WWF with the gimmick Goldust, however, since that character is copyrighted up in Conneticut has found it hard to get over without it and the Dusty-ism fate has settled back on his shoulders. A good wrestler with good entertainment skills, this could be his big chance. "Sultan of Swing" Juventud Guerrera: Spent some time on the scrapheap recently due to behaviour indescretions, which is a shame for a man of such incredulous talent. In my own personal eyes, had one of the most entertaining Pay-Per-View matches of all time in 1999 at Spring Stampede with Blitzkreig. Has been recently rehired by WCW, and has been on a good role, so with that in mind, he stands a good chance here. "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash: Probably not getting the role he once has, nevertheless, Kevin is regarded by the fans as somewhat of a wrestling legend. Despite being limited in the ring, Kevin was incredibly over particularly at the turn of the millenium, and is still regarded as a key WCW player despite some recently failings. A probable winner of this tournament under the previous regime, but the new regime seem to be focussing heavily on capable in ring talent. 50/50 chance. Jerry Lynn: One of the best technicians in North America today. Fans still speak of his brief run in 1995 with WCW, where he was almost inexplicably dropped despite giving some hellacious performances, notably at Halloween Havoc against fellow Extreme Championship Wrestling star Sabu. Will be interesting to get a read on how WCW now rates him. A possible contendor just on wrestling brilliance alone. "That 70's Guy" Mike Awesome: Needs to drop the current moniker he's stuck with to be taken seriously. Gained some serious heat in 2000 with the "Career Killer" persona, but for some reason that was never quite explained, they turned his Canadian powerhouse performance into a comical disco Stu type role. With that, I don't expect him to win here. Needs time out to reevaluate his career. "Above Average" Mike Sanders: Former WCW Commissioner, and already at a young age, highly touted. Largely recognised as the leader of the Natural Born Thrillers, Sanders has it all. A very strong chance in our estimation. "The Beast from the East" Bam Bam Bigelow: Could be his sort of title. In our opinion at www.wrestlingisgoodmmkay.com, it is confusing that Bam Bam has never really risen to be the cream of the crop. A lot of menace in his appearance, a large size similar to legendary Jerry Blackwell from AWA fame, Bam Bam can also wrestle with a fair amount of agility. Our tip to take the title. "Dog Faced Gremlin" Rick Steiner: Somewhat of a WCW legend, and current WCW Hardcore Champion, Rick has fallen in behind his brother Big Poppa Pump as one of the guys wrestlers least like to face due to sheer intensity and power. A strong chance. "The Animal" Dave Bautista: There is no doubt this guy has the raw crudentials to do just about anything in this sport. We think his green-ness will count against him here, but we think also he'll duly hold a belt like this one within a year. A dark horse bolter. "The Real Deal" AJ Styles: Somewhat inexperienced also, and regarded by some as a spot monkey, AJ Styles is nonetheless a great wrestler to watch in the flesh, and therefore being committed to regular television appearances with the belt could be a good thing for the company. We regard him as an extreme longshot though at this stage. "The Samoan Submission Machine" Samoa Joe: Reminds us of a younger Bam Bam Bigelow, but with the technical abilities of some of the best Japanese submission specialists. A rare jewel in the crown, someone the company conceivably could be based around in a few years. Has the all-round game to pose a serious threat. "Mr Wiggle" Norman Smiley: Good comedy value. Knows how to sell well. Love the scream. We see him more as a future contendor to the Hardcore Championship. Something tells us that Rick Steiner may walk out with the TV Title, and that will have the Hardcore Championship held up for someone like Smiley to take at SuperBrawl Revenge. Bryan Clarke: A former Tag Team Champion with Bryan Adams, formerly known as both Wrath and Adam Bomb, Bryan is a strong athlete with a strong power game. Has the ability to legitimately clear out all his opponents in this tournament. We think he'll at least reach the semis and wouldn't be surprised if he takes out the belt at the end of it. There you have it. The sixteen contendors to the belt, with the tournament starting this Thursday at the finale of Thunder. It is great to see this coveted strap getting more glory, it is far important to be lost at the bottom of a garbage can, as Ed Ferrera and Vince Russo thought it should be at. The devaluing of belts in WCW by Russo in particular has left the company facing the very real possibility of extinction. The Death of WCW is still very much a real possibility, and a lot of hard work, including revitalising the Television Championship is required to start dislodging the nails from the coffin.
Whow, Kanyon beat Booker T cleanly?! Now thats crazy. I hope this is your way of getting rid of that idiot Vince Russo and giving full reign to Ric Flair. Flairs that man in my opinion. Its interesting to see the development between Cavo and Kevin Nash. Job Nash Out, Job Nash Out! Great way to send Thunder off brother, anothr great show!

Great way to send Thunder off brother, anothr great show!
I'm not a massive fan of false or DQ finishes. I can cop a cheating finish, especially if it advances a story well, but, I'm more of the traditional school that you come to an arena to see two guys in a squared circle tell a story, with the best man winning. I think good creative booking can give you that same feel, wrestler A beats wrestler B because its in his best interests, but post match wrestler A or B gets attacked to advance another storyline. I think that happened so often in WCW, in combination with 3 hour shows where the entire first hour was often devoted to angles and not wrestling that people tuned off... because, oddly enough, their initial hook into WCW was... wrestling. Odd. Basic? You'd think it'd be simple to pick up. The nWo was great, but then grew so big and out of control, and had so many run ins it became totally ineffective. I'm just trying to stare clear of things that blew WCW out of the water and made it a sitting duck to be destroyed by Vince McMahon. In regards to Chris Kanyon, I'm a bit of a mark of his. I loved watching him in WCW. The tag "Innovator of Offence" was very credible because he'd come up with a variety of very spectacular and creative moves. ... But, we'll have to wait and see at SuperBrawl what happens with Flair, Kanyon and Chavo/Nash :D

...
Kimberly Page Fired By Ivana Kock For www.wrestlingisgoodmmkay.com Breaking news from World Championship Wrestling headquarters has revealed that former Playboy model, and wife of former World Heavyweight Champion Kimberly Page has been terminated by WCW. It is understood that the brunette bombshell was dropped this morning after failing a random drug's test. It is understood that Page left WCW headquarters in tears and in a fit of fury is understood to have publically cursed out WCW President John Simpson. It is believed that Kimberly and Simpson are no longer on speaking terms. Recently Page has been involved with WCW only in a backstage capacity. Page has been highly regarded in the female fitness industry, seemingly keeping her beautiful figure as a result of an intense and determined work out regime coupled with specialised diets. It is not known whether the drugs relate to either performance enhancing or recreational drugs. No comment was made by any officials within World Championship Wrestling.
