This is such a creativity dynasty all around. The creative meetings, show presentations, match descriptions, the whole new season format, things are kicking on all cylinders. No matter if you’re posting a show or something going on backstage theirs depth to the writing. Your skill of writing for different people in the creative meeting is especially noticeable. Plus the whole idea of this being a more fleshed out of the AEW record system is awesome. Not to mention the skill you have shown with making graphics. Each match graphic you make looks ultra professional. I could see those being for an actual weekly tv show. Keep up the amazing work, you’ll keep getting the notoriety you deserve.

Comments: seems like you enjoy Lawler as a heel from his tag match highjinx. I could see him getting a cheap win here.

Damn, the PPV really kicked my ass. Put me on team Dusty and Heyman. Just letting Luger keep the belt with the chance of him leaving is terrible. Whoever wins the vacant title doesn't look legitimate because he didn't beat Luger for the belt, and Luger gets to basically beat the entire territory without putting anybody over and take all his momentum and pop somewhere else to go make Vince money. And I can just imagine Verne Gagne, all 86 years old, driving to Bischoff's house and strangling him to death because he said "who cares about the world championship?" Hell, I can't imagine Mr. Sports Presentation Kip Frey is crazy about the idea of "Who cares about the world champion?" I mean, he shouldn't, given his characterization so far. But then again, maybe he'll just say "caring about the world championship is old news" or something.

Anywho.

FEBRUARY 92, WEEK 5 : EPISODE 92.05

tBEcKDL.jpg

“Welcome one and all, to wrestling’s Sabbath.” A sea of blue and yellow neon sets the scene for WCW Saturday night. Paul E Dangerously, Harley Race, and Dusty Rhodes welcome the world to Week Five of the 1992 season, the second week of Round 2. They recap the amazing night that was Superbrawl 92, including Lex Luger’s shoddy retaining of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. The discussion moves quickly to focus on our main event tonight, Ron Simmons versus Lex Luger. It’s no secret that Luger’s contract situation with WCW has not been clarified, and is set to expire at the end of this month. Promotions like All Japan, World Wrestling Federation, and New Japan are all vying for the opportunity to woo the current world champion, and why wouldn’t they? With that in mind though, many journalists believe that the fix is in and WCW will force it’s hand to remove the championship from his waist and ensure that it remains around the waist of a WCW wrestler. Dusty Rhodes immediately squashes the conversation, stating that this is WCW, and we are proud to put on a program without compromise, and that whether it’s in the companies best interest or not, there will be zero tolerance for tomfoolery in a scheduled season match up. This isn’t a farce, WCW stands by the authentic sports programming approach that it has taken. Paulie and Harley talk about Halloween Havoc from this past October, where Simmons competed against Luger in his first opportunity to win the World Heavyweight Championship and came up short. Paulie mentions that it was a 2/3 falls match then, and Simmons got the first fall. If that happens tonight, we have a new champion. But we have 5 matches ahead of that, and we kick off tonight with a huge match between Nikita Koloff and Sting!

Lance Russell introduces our officiating staff for tonight, Mike Atkins, Hiroyuki Onno and senior official Randy Anderson. The officials staff are preparing for their matches tonight. Randy Anderson is in charge of tonight’s massive main event.

RSaGEv5.gifOur first bout of the night sees Koloff and Sting exchange a show of respect before locking up. Nikita’s been using a foreign star gimmick, and it’s not clicking with the crowd at all, so they are 100% in Sting’s favour to start this one off. But as much should be expected during an American vs Russian in the south, even with the Cold War officially having fizzled out back in December. JR and Schiavone play up that Koloff is distraught, having lost his opportunity at the world championship and it may be a while before the stars align for him to compete for the title again. These guys have mutual respect, even though there has to be tension between them, and JR comments that the last time they fought, it was under Russian Chain rules, and Koloff walked out of that match the victor. The respect between these two turn grey as grapples turn to strikes and this descends into a wild brawl. They are evenly matched, the only real advantage here is the seemingly ‘home-field’ advantage Sting is enjoying, and the action continues to escalate to harder strikes and more punishing moves. Koloff hits the Russian Sickle out of nowhere, but Sting’s leg is under the ropes, forcing the pin to be invalid. Koloff is seething as he had this one won and opts to line up another Sickle, but it’s countered by Sting! Sting locks in the Deathlock in the centre of the ring, and Koloff has no choice but to tap out and give Sting the win.

Sting (2-0-0) def. Nikita Koloff (1-1-0) in 15:30

E4gSl2c.gifIn the second match of the night, Cactus Jack and Austin Idol are both looking to avoid going 0-2 to start the season. Jack is coming off a wild PPV match this past week, while Idol was a competitor in the Superbrawl battle royal. This wasn’t anything special, as both heels were evenly placed, and not that over. Austin Idol seems a bit slower than he once was and Cactus has more spring in his step. However, Idol’s experience keeps him with the upper hand over Cactus. Austin Idol goes up high for an elbow drop, but is very slow getting up to the top, and that allows Jack to roll out of the way! Cactus Jack hits a DDT and gets the win. Austin Idol is disappointed with himself as he goes to the back.

Cactus Jack (1-1-0) def. Austin Idol (0-2-0) in 14:46

Magnum TA runs through the results from last night’s Main Event action, which saw Jerry Lawler defeat Brian Pillman and The Outsiders defeating The American Males. In additional exhibitions, Johnny B Badd defeated Bob Orton Jr, Mr. Hughes defeated George Steele, and in tag team action, Greg Valentine and Scott Flamingo defeated Tommy Lane and Firebreaker Chip. JR’s indie spotlight was on Jushin Liger’s manager, Ultimo Dragon.

Continuing with the first intermission is Race to 180 with Harley Race, Harley sits down with the United States Tag Team Champions, The Young Pistols. They have been red hot ever since they stopped playing to the fans and buckled down. Now, starting off the 1992 season with two straight tag title defences, they will meet their greatest challenge yet in Round Three as they face off against the Steiner Brothers. But they are not phased, they are ready to prove to the world that the Young Pistols have arrived. Harley says that eventually they will need to take on giants like El Gigante, and behemoths like Abdullah the Butcher. Asks how they will prepare for significant size advantage. Smothers goes off, saying that they are living in the present and worrying about future matches will only take their eyes of the prize.

BaVzSvK.gifDustin Rhodes and Kevin Von Erich make their way to the ring for some div two action. Kevin has been focusing on endurance training according to Schiavone, as he was very upset with his performance in round one. Dustin starts off over-confident as he got off to a strong start, winning the first test of strength between the two and tossing Kevin aside. However, Kevin springs back up to his feet and planted Dustin on his @ss. Dustin is shocked as Kevin chuckles. Dustin starts to get aggressive, but Kevin shows off his experience, by sliding out of holds and tossing Dustin with simple throws with ease. Dustin spills to the outside and recoups with his ring-man, Barry Windham, who gives him some advice. Barry’s a bit distracted though, as we see that Butch Reed is in attendance, staring daggers through his next opponent. Dustin gets back in the ring and shakes off the nerves, charging at Von Erich and catching him with a dropkick. Rhodes mounts so more offence, but the barefoot warrior unleashed some stiff kicks to regain momentum. Out of nowhere, Rhodes catches Von Erich with a roll up and shocks the more experienced star. Dustin is ecstatic, while Von Erich is frustrated.

Dustin Rhodes (2-0-0) def. Kevin Von Erich (0-2-0) in 15:05

rlImc0B.gifOut for the second Elite Division match of the night is Kevin Sullivan and One Man Gang. The commentary team discusses the recent controversy surrounding the comments made by Jesse Ventura regarding One Man Gang’s Round One performance. They talk about how that likely won’t improve after his sloppy victory at Superbrawl over a past-his-prime Bob Orton. Schiavone jokes that perhaps Gang will have similar luck against someone the same age as Bob in Kevin Sullivan, and that he should take advantage of this before he has to fight younger guys in better shape. Sullivan has Norman the Lunatic in his corner curiously. Gang bum rushes Sullivan right off the bat and is all over him to start the match. It seems as though he is out to finish this one quickly, but Sullivan gets out of the ring and taunts the crowd. Gang is not in a good mood and chases Sullivan on the outside. Sullivan displays superior conditioning, out-running him at every turn, and then jumping him upon re-entering the ring. As the match progresses, it’s clear that Gang is getting exhausted and Sullivan’s trickery is working. Gang gets frustrated and beats on Sullivan in the corner, and Norman jumps up on the apron yelling. The referee has to separate the two and in the process Sullivan low blows Gang and scores a pin.

Kevin Sullivan (0-1-0) def. One Man Gang (0-2-0) in 13:31.

JGgmXE7.jpg

Our second intermission is led off by Inside the Squared Circle, with Jesse Ventura and Magnum TA. Magnum is quick to stop Jesse and say that the producers have requested that we avoid discussing One Man Gang again, and stick to the planned segment. Ventura says he’ll just say one thing quick and they’ll move on. Gang came out hot both at Superbrawl and tonight, he knows his weakness is his stamina and he’s made a concentrated effort to finish things quickly before exposing his vulnerability, but what Sullivan did tonight was a masterclass in manipulation and formulating a successful game plan. If Gang focuses on improving his stamina and masks his improvements by rushing out of the gate, he’ll turn his game around in no time, He’s got a month to continue his fitness training before his next match, let’s move on. Magnum is impressed by Jesse’s positivity, and says he wants to talk about the Lex Luger contract situation and how it affects the WCW. Magnum thinks that the WCW put itself in a poor spot by including Luger in the inaugural season without a guaranteed contract in place - even given the stature - but it’s also poor form that Luger is not being a professional about this and not giving the WCW a firm decision. Ventura goes off on Magnum, saying that Luger is in a spot all athletes should strive to be in, one where he holds all the marbles to collect a once-in-a-lifetime contract. At 33 years old, it’s likely that the next contract he signs will be the peak of his career, and anything that comes after it will be on his decline. He will never be more valuable than he is right now. Ventura says that tonight, he believes this is the most important match of Luger’s career as a win ensures he’s bigger paydays than he’s ever seen, and a loss puts every move in question. All eyes are on Luger tonight, the pressure will never be greater. Magnum says that truly paints the picture that this is Simmons’ match to win.

Continuing on the intermission, we get footage of the post-Superbrawl press conference, where Ricky Steamboat and Rick Rude weighed in on their epic main event. Steamboat was understandably disappointed, as on that night, Rude was the better man. Steamboat is looking to rebound from this match with a big performance against Terry Gordy. Rude takes over, saying all focus should be on him. The reigning US champion, a championship with zero ambiguity over it’s future, and he’s looking to pick up his first season win against Dan Spivey. Rude implies that it’ll be a cakewalk, but then Vader speaks up from the conference panel, noting that he is Rude’s round 3 opponent. And while the WCW championship is in limbo, Rude’s right - the US championship has zero ambiguity. When they face off in Round Three, that title is finding it’s home, hanging from The Mastadon’s Shoulder.

eZ0wwJ2.gifJR notates right off the bat that The Steiner Brothers have a significant experience and chemistry advantage here over Shamrock and Severn. These two teams show off a wild range of great technical ability, as all four display a variety of holds and throws that begin to wow the crowd. Severn and Shamrock take every opportunity they get to ground the brothers and put them into submissions. Shamrock also focuses on leg kicks which infuriates Rick. The bout is super even, and the only real negative here is neither team is playing the villain. At ringside the Freebirds are scouting their next opponents (the Shooters) while we also see Chris Adams providing more tutoring to his protege, Al Snow. In a roof-blowing spot, Scott Steiner hits Dan Severn with a huge frankensteiner, and turns to a pissed off Ken Shamrock who runs straight at him and hits him with a hurricanrana! JR freaks out on commentary, saying he’s never seen anything like that. Things break down and the Steiner’s catch Shamrock on his own. They hit the Steinerizer and this one is over.

The Steiner Brothers (2-0-0) def. Shooters Club (1-1-0) in 12:22.

x8UbMKh.gifIt’s time, for the main event! The crowd hates on Luger as he makes his entrance, and he poses cockily, leaning into their jeers. Before the match starts, Luger shows a bit of weakness as he pauses when handing over his championship to referee Randy Anderson, and a momentary look of concern crosses his face. The crowd raise to their feet as this one begins, this match is electric and it hasn’t even started. Simmons appears a bit surprised by the reaction. This one is slow starting out as each wrestler feels out the other, nervous to make the first big move. They lock up in a collar and elbow tie-up, and Simmons catches Luger off guard by throwing Luger immediately to the canvas! When they faced off at Halloween Havoc 91, that initial lock up was a stalemate. Simmons puts one finger up, shouting there is only one fall this time! These two are evenly matched. Luger wants to tie up again, and this time he doesn’t play into the test of strength, instead kneeing Simmons in the gut. Suplex and then Luger takes control for a bit. He goes for the Torture Rack, but Simmons sheer powers out of it and then plants Luger, who rolls to the outside and starts walking up the ramp. Simmons attacks, but gets suplexed on the ramp way and that looked painful. He holds his back in agony as Luger smiles and drags him back to the ring. Luger has weakened the back and JR says it’s just a matter of time before Luger gets the Torture Rack on and this is over. Luger is in control for a while, and Simmons keeps working on mounting a comeback. Out of nowhere, Simmons hits a power bomb on Luger for a near fall. These guys have gone deep into the match now, and Simmons has Luger reeling! The action spill to the floor and the timekeeper’s booth announces one minute remains. Luger ducks in and out of the ring, deciding he wants to run out the clock, when Simmons snaps and sprints at Luger, hitting Luger with a massive tackle right through the timekeepers table! The officials at ringside are sent sprawling, and Simmons struggles to get to his feet. Simmons lifts up Luger’s dead weight and gets him back to the ring. Spinebuster! 1-2-3!!!!!! RON SIMMONS HAS WON!!!!

Wait, Nick Patrick is coming down and confers with the referee Randy Anderson. They go to the time-keepers booth. The officiating staff is conferring and Schiavone says that the timekeepers may have missed the time limit due to being knocked down. It appears that their equipment was disconnected trying to ring the time limit. They review replays at the time keeper booth and it’s clear that the time limit expired about 8 seconds before Simmons made the pin. The contest is ruled a draw to massive boos and Luger smiles while trying to recollect his feet as he’s handed the World Championship. Simmons is arguing with the officials and the scene is anarchy.

Lex Luger (1-0-1) and Ron Simmons (1-0-1) go to a 20:00 minute time limit draw.

Jesse Ventura announces we are out of time for this week, but before we go he announces this weeks three stars:

3. Nikita Koloff

2. Lex Luger

1. Sting (wins $10,000 wrestler of the night bonus)

Back at the broadcast panel, the team recaps the nights events, showing replays and providing analysis of the night that was. There is a hurried fear about what it means for WCW that Lex Luger successfully retained, but a lot of pride in the right decision being made in the moment of the main event. Dusty stands by the officiating staff’s decisions and while the result leaves ambiguity, it’s the right result. Harley says that we just witnessed something special, and there’s no doubting that Luger deserves whatever contract he signs next. Heyman signs off with his touted quote, “It’s Saturday night, folks - Stay Dangerous!”

March Week 2, 1992 - 9:45 AM - Great Success

It’s 45 minutes into Monday at the office, and Paulie, Harley, Dusty and JR are all waiting for the arrival of Kip Frey. Bischoff is also nowhere to be found. Paulie jokes that maybe they finally started f*cking each other, god knows that Bischoff would be game. Suddenly, Frey and Bischoff and an entourage of women enter the room, all of them reeking of booze and looking like they came straight from the club. The men in the room expect this kind of behaviour from Bischoff, but seeing Frey messed up is shocking to all of them. Frey pops a bottle of champagne and has the girls hand out glasses to all his pals. He tosses a TV magazine onto the table, which features Luger on the front cover.

1tosyvG.jpg

Kip Frey

“Drink up fellas! We did it. The ratings are in and this week was our biggest number to date, plus we are getting critically acclaimed reviews for the quality of the show. Several critics are calling it the best televised wrestling show cable tv has ever presented. The press is considering Simmons versus Luger as a groundbreaking approach to weekly wrestling matchups.”

DvNEwEM.jpg

Eric Bischoff

“Plus, our finance reports are in for February. We are flush in the green boys. I’m talkin stacks on stacks on stacks. We just went to the Blue Lounge and expensed 10K to celebrate. Y’all have the day to celebrate - the good times are rollin!”

1tosyvG.jpg

Kip Frey

“Think about it folks, a main event match featuring two stars with zero feud. A sports match through and through, where the heat stems from real world sport stories, a finish that puts over the challenger, gets the champion more heat, and a wild twisting, turning finish that maintained believability. That’s what we have accomplished here. Harley - what you put together with Simmons and Luger managed to create something that was greater than the sum of it’s parts. That was a match that vastly exceeded their abilities. Masterclass. But that’s not all, we have one more major victory…”

The door opens and Lex Luger enters, his hair tied back and a smile on his face.

GOoQzEk.jpg

Lex Luger

“I don’t know how you guys did it… I only lost 7 matches between 89 and 91 and never looked weak, but in the past week I’ve been presented weaker than I have ever been presented before, and I’m simultaneously more over than I’ve ever been. Did you hear the crowd on Saturday? That felt as big as my main events against Flair did! I’d been weighing whether I’d stay or go to All Japan all week, when just three months ago I had already made my mind up to leave. I can’t believe I’m saying it now, but I believe in WCW. I want to be a part of this - and so last night I agreed to the 4 year extension that JR has been selling me on. Mr. Frey, you’ve done some great work here in getting this company to this spot. I’m here to officially sign the contract we’ve agreed on.”

mgHtHgc.jpg

Paul Heyman

“Whoa, hold on a second. I know an opportunity when I see one. I think if we are doing this authentic sports presentation, we need to do it all around. I think we should have a contract signing presented on Saturday Night, with Dusty Rhodes playing his part. Luger has turned into a draw - this should be a publicized big deal. Do it as a press conference and use it as an opportunity to continue down this path of Lex Luger as a conniving heel who’s safeguarding his world championship.”

DvNEwEM.jpg

Eric Bischoff

“I don’t know Paul, don’t you think that angle is too ‘sports entertainment?’”

1tosyvG.jpg

Kip Frey

“Nonsense, Eric. Paul - that’s a great I idea, I love it. Workshop the angle with Dusty and Harley - keep it authentic though, no WWF-style. And Good Ol JR, great work with Luger, your position as Head of Talent Relations has been off to a fantastic start, between healing the relationship of WCW and Mr. Luger, and the on boarding of many returning and new talents in a short timespan - truly exceptional work. I hear you have other news to report?””

62nv7wi.jpg

Jim Ross

“Thank you, Mr. Frey. Good Ol’ JR… I like that. And it’s been a pleasure to grow the business I love dear. Yes, I have one more re-signing to report on. I’ve successfully negotiated a 4 year renewal for one additional talent - Steve Austin. I think the kid will be a valuable resource for years to come and will grow to make WCW a lot of money.”

AROUND THE WORLD

- Up in Canada, in the tiny WFWA promotion, Lance Storm is getting rave reviews for a performance in a pre-show dark match, hailed as the best performance on the card. The 22 year old may be one to watch in the coming years.

- Tom Brandi appeared on a radio show and commented that the UWF locker room is a cesspool of negativity. Brandi mentioned that the promotion must be bleeding money, as it’s clear owner Herb Abrams has zero clue what he is doing.

- During the WWF Superstars show, Hulk Hogan defeated Shawn Michaels in what was considered the match of the night. Unfortunately for the WWF, Shawn’s leg was broken during the contest, and early indication is that his recovery will take 6 months. Journalists wonder whether the smaller athlete’s body is capable of keeping up with the larger athletes present in professional wrestling.

- Gordon Solie looks to be without a home, as after the WCW released him he was quickly signed by ECW and IWCCW. However, both companies have opted to not to continue forward with a renewal after a short term contract.

- Ladies Major League Wrestling announced the signing of Melissa Coates, Ruth Morris, Jacqueline, Lady Amazon and Black Venus after their recent rise in stature. This development is interesting as the company hasn’t been able to prove itself to be profitable. Whether these hirings help or hinder the company will beg to be seen.

Special congrats go to Helginho for the first perfect predictions, more frequent usage of draws make the ability to perfectly guess a card that much more difficult, but they managed to do so here.

And thank you to The Blonde Bomber for the kind words. I felt it was important to do the lead up prologue and the behind-the-scenes antics to allow for the world to feel complete and with reason, as well as create additional over-arching stories to latch onto. I'm loving writing Bischoff and Frey especially. The graphics are... well, that's part of my career right there, so I better be half decent haha! I've handcuffed myself as a personal challenge, no Adobe suite or normal photo-manipulation software allowed in any of my graphics. I'm making the match cards on Keynote, and processing through an online app (photomosh) for fun.

As a special insider scoop - Luger's contract was in a state of seriously considering two offers, All Japan and my offer, and I opted to let the game decide rather than play god and dole out more money. Luger agreed to the contract the day after the Saturday Night show. Luger versus Simmons is currently my highest rated in-game match which shocked me as neither performer is pulling top-of-the-top ratings (Simmons is mid 60s, Luger is mid 70s, while Sting is high 70s, Rude is mid 80s, and Steamboat is high 80s) and I figured I'd go all in with what the game rated it. This past show is also my best show to date in-game. I score really high with the analysis group segments, and this week was the first week that the Ventura segment decided to pop a huge rating as well, which put this show above and beyond all others.

My picks for half these matches are who I hope wins. Picking Tully came down to the stare down he was in at Super Brawl. He feels important compared to Dr Death. Hoping I get that one.

Match Graphics are mesmerizing with the rainbow that moves through them. I could tell Bischoff was fun for you after seeing the comment about him spending the night with a tongue pierce chick haha. But overall a lot of the characters have come off really good. I was disappointed Ole and Bill left the company cause I enjoyed the antagonistic energy they brought to the Board Room. Could be a comedy… “The Board Room” :)

FEBRUARY 92, WEEK 6 : EPISODE 92.06

tBEcKDL.jpg

“Welcome one and all, to wrestling’s Sabbath.” It’s Saturday Night and we are are live for another exciting night of pro wrestling competition. Paul E Dangerously, Harley Race, and Dusty Rhodes welcome the world to Week Six of the 1992 season, the final week of Round 2. They recap the highly controversial main event last week, with Dusty sharing footage from a press conference after last weeks show where Dusty stood by the officiating staff’s actions, stating it was the right decision to make, and while the result was not a crowd-pleasing one, it was the right call. The team discuss how tonight is a different story, as we have three blockbuster Elite Division matches, including a US Championship match, as well as a TV Title match and a Tag Team Title match. They break down the card, giving their predictions to the night that will be, and then announce that despite heavy controversy surrounding Lex Luger, no one can argue his star power and in-ring capabilities. WCW is proud to be signing him to a four year contract extension and footage will be shown tonight of the conference held for his official signing. It’s yet another can’t miss night of WCW!

Lance Russell introduces our officiating staff for tonight, Jimmy Jett, Scott Armstrong and senior official Nick Patrick. The officials staff are preparing for their matches tonight. The commentary team comment on the professionalism displayed during last week’s main event, a difficult call was made.

YPCyNvd.gifThe night kicks off with the first of three Elite Division matches, as Rick Rude comes to the ring accompanied by Dangerously, Madusa, Eaton, and Tully Blanchard, while Dan Spivey has Steve Williams in his corner. The title is not on the line, as Spivey has a losing record and is not eligible for the belt. Spivey is currently being presented as a babyface bad ass, but it’s not quite clicking yet. Schiavone mentions that with Tully and Dr. Death at ringside, things could get combustible and Nick Patrick will have his hands full here.

Right out of the gate, this is a brawl. Spivey has a bit of a size advantage, and Rude is going to need to use some cunning here tonight. These guys just pummel each other and the action spills early onto the floor where the Alliance gets in Spivey’s face. This distraction allows Rude to turn the tide, ramming Spivey face first into the corner post and busting him open. Dr. Death gets heated and gets in between Spivey and the Alliance, acting super tough. Tully slaps him ahead of their match and Williams snaps, grabbing Blanchard and charging him through the guardrails at ringside! This is chaos, as the alliance attack Williams. Referee Nick Patrick is trying to eject everyone. Rude thinks he’s got the upper hand, but Spivey seems motivated by the sight of his own blood. A series of clotheslines and a sidewalk slam, and Spivey has turned the tide and the crowd is raucous with energy. He locks in a bear hug, but Rude rakes the eyes and immediately hits the Rude Awakening for the win. The Alliance are trying to help Tully to the back as Dr. Death consoles Spivey in the ring.

Rick Rude (1-0-1) def. Dan Spivey (0-2-0) in 13:19.

xu88AVK.gifUp next is the first of two title matches tonight, as The Enforcers meet their alliance comrades on the entry ramp and Dangerously and Madusa opt to stay at ringside while Eaton and Rude help Tully to the back. Out next are the challengers, Chaos By Nature. An interesting matchup on paper, as The Enforcers are technical geniuses in the ring, while Haku and Abdullah are wild brawlers who are more likely to cause a car crash match rather than stick to a traditional tag team match. Chaos By Nature have Norman the Lunatic in their corner, leading Schiavone to question what Norman’s agenda is, if he’s even capable of having one. Also shown in the crowd is Vinnie Vegas and Diamond Studd, eating popcorn and scouting the Enforcers ahead of their round three match up.

This match ends up being paint-by-numbers unfortunately, as the clash of styles, both teams being heels and the story being told in the ring just wasn’t that hot. Abdullah dragged down the action and sucked the wind out of the crowd as they wanted to cheer for the challengers, but Abdullah wasn’t all that exciting. Arn and Larry isolated Abdullah and wore him down and they built up to a hot tag to Haku, but official Jimmy Jett was distracted by the ringside guys and missed the tag, killing any comeback. Abdullah threatened Jett with a fork, but then turned into a double team from The Enforcers and this one’s over.

The Enforcers (2-0-0) def. Haku and Abdullah (1-1-0) in 12:52 to retain the WCW Tag Team Championships.

Magnum TA runs through the results from last night’s Main Event action, which saw Bobby Eaton defeat Al Perez and The Heavenly Bodies defeat the Southern Rockers. In additional exhibitions, Johnny B Badd defeated Kamala who had returned from injury, Greg Valentine, Scott Armstrong and Tony Anthony defeating Mike Rapada, Firebreaker Chip and Tommy Lane in trios action, and in tag team action, Z-Man and La Parka defeated Rip Rogers and Les Thornton. JR’s indie spotlight was on Pat Rose, who’s been seen on-and-off for WCW for a while now and is at a make-or-break point in his career.

Lance Russell is backstage with Rude and Tully, congratulating Rude on his win and asking if Tully is okay for his major match tonight. Before we get an answer though, Big Van Vader interrupts and thanks Rude for keeping his belt warm. Rude doesn’t appreciate the comment and starts yelling and backstage officials run in and get him out of there. JR comments that Vader has been very unprofessional the past few weeks, interrupting events that he is not a part of, and wonders if this bully will be penalized by WCW for his actions.

9MH4CYf.gifThe first match after the intermission is tag team action. The Fantastics have Firebreaker Chip in their corner, while the Killer Bees have Ultimo Dragon in their corner. JR jokes that the Bees should get Ultimo a matching mask. In attendance is the Journeyman, as Chris Adams continues to use the longer standing tag team groups for teaching his protege Al Snow on tag team fundamentals. This is a solid match up, as despite a slight difference in age and overall experience, the tag team of Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers have been together for a longer period than the Killer Bees. Both teams deploy classic tag team wrestling, trading turns isolating a member and trying to keep distance from tags, as well as working quick tags. It almost feels like a test to show off who is the superior classical tag team. In a highly entertaining sequence, Jim and Tommy both get winded with a crash-course double crossbody, resulting in build up to a double hot tag, where Bobby and Brian sprint in and knock each other down immediately with huge coinciding forearm shots. The crowd is thoroughly enjoying this one, and it remains even until The Fantastics isolate Jim for a top rope dropkick / school boy combo for the win.

The Fantastics (1-1-0) def. Killer Bees (1-1-0) in 15:38.

sCvphQ9.gifTully is out next with Dangerously, Rude, Madusa and the Enforcers, and has his shoulder taped up now. He’s trying to loosen it up as he makes it to the ring, but there is a clear look of concern on his face. Dr. Death comes out alone - Schiavone guesses that Dan Spivey is still leaking from his forehead. JR mentions that Dr. Death came here tonight to make a statement after losing in round one, and Tully’s in a dangerous spot as an injury suffered tonight will cost him dearly next week when he contends for the World Championship.

Dr. Death charges at Tully right off the bat and squashes him in the turnbuckles. He manhandles Tully for a bit as the commentary team put him over as a complete athlete - having size, strength and agility. Tully rakes the eyes and then chop blocks Steve’s knee and grounds the bigger man. Tully tries to keep him down with submissions and strikes, but Dr. Death powers back to his feet and then toss Tully across the ring with a biel throw - that wrenched Tully’s shoulder good and he’s feeling it. He retreats to the floor where Dangerously tries to give him advice, but it’s a ploy to get Steve near the ropes so that Tully can spring up and connect with a quick guillotine. Tully tries to get back on the offence with another chop block, continuing to focus on the knee. Tully attacks the grounded big man, stomping repeatedly into his knee. JR comments that it’ll be difficult for Dr. Death to hit his power moves while standing on one leg. Tully locks on a figure four and Williams is screaming, but he makes it to the ropes. Tully refuses to break right away and the ref nearly disqualifies him before he lets up. Dr. Death struggles to his feet, and Tully goes for the slingshot, but his shoulder gives out on him and Dr. Death crashes on top of him for a near fall. Williams to his feet and he’s enraged now, and Tully’s momentum fell off of a cliff with that missed Slingshot. Williams takes off Tully’s head with a lariat, and then looks to go for the Oklahoma Stampede, but realizes his knee won’t hold up. Instead, he destroys Tully with a Doctor Bomb and this one is over! Emphatic win for Dr. Death!

Steve Williams (1-1-0) def. Tully Blanchard (1-1-0) in 16:13.

It’s time, for Inside the Squared Circle with Jesse Ventura and Magnum TA. Magnum immediately brings up the outside the ring brawl between Dr. Death and Tully Blanchard during Rick Rude versus Dan Spivey and questions how WCW could allow the latter match of Dr. Death versus Tully Blanchard after Tully potentially injured himself. This is a question of safety for the wrestlers, and in this case it seems as though the wrestler’s safety was not respected and going out and competing in a lengthy match after that injury could compromise Tully’s arm long term. Ventura disagrees, saying that the boys know that being in the ringside area opens up the possibility for physicality. No one twisted Tully’s arm and forced him to be at ringside, and definitely no one told him it was a wise idea to slap a physical beast like Steve Williams. I mean, seriously, you slap a guy like that in the face, you better be expecting consequences. This was poor judgement by Tully and his own fault, and it’s going to cost him big time on the season as he loses this week, is likely hurt going into his match against one of the best wrestlers in the world today against Luger next week, and then will have to sit and wait until round four, missing out on an opportunity to become world champion and starting the season 1-2. It’s his own fault, and the consequences of his actions are clear as day. Magnum thinks that Steve Williams took things too far with the extent of the attack, as his retaliation greatly exceeded Tully’s slap. Ventura says if he were to slap Magnum right now, would Magnum just slap him back, or would he clean his clock? Magnum says that WCW’s management will need to consider taking action to set an example here, as ringside brawls cannot be encouraged.

The intermission continues with footage from a Press Conference earlier today. Dusty Rhodes is proud to announce that the WCW and Lex Luger have agreed to a four year contract extension. Luger’s recent matches have been critically acclaimed and his accolades are recognized and valued by the WCW family. Lex speaks, stating that he fielded several additional offers from other organizations, but the professional environment and the level of the competition in WCW truly is unparalleled and he is excited to be the benchmark of excellence for years to come. Sting provides additional comments, stating that Luger and him have been allies in the past, and it’s an honour to continue to share the ring with him. He’s happy that Luger is staying, as he provides them with a rematch down the line, with Sting stating that the only matchup they had on opposite sides has been a match that Luger won, and he needs to even the score. Finally, comments from Ron Simmon are provided. Simmons implies a rematch and Luger laughs it off, saying that they’ve had their match and it’s time to move on. Clear tension here as there is unfinished business between Luger and Simmons. Luger puts pen to paper, and Dusty shakes hands with him, and they pose for the press.

Dusty announces the Elite Division matches for next week: Tully Blanchard versus Lex Luger and Nikita Koloff versus Bam Bam Bigelow. After the events of tonight, Vegas odds have Lex Luger as the heavy favourite over Tully, while Bam Bam and Nikita are even money.

Ujo6TCd.gifThe TV Title is on the line, and it seems the Dangerous Alliance is exhausted from a long night, as only Eaton and Dangerously come all the way to the ring. Meanwhile, Takada is flanked by Long, Bigelow and Terrence Taylor. On top of the stablemates, Dustin Rhodes, Brian Pillman and Tom Zenk are all watching from ringside. Austin balks at his challenger and teases a test of strength, but uses it to give a cheap kick to the midsection. Austin plays up to the crowd that he’s in charge, but Takada fires back with a flurry of strikes. Austin regroups by locking in an abdominal stretch to try and catch his breath, but Takada with a judo throw and Austin goes to the floor and yells as Dangerously tries to calm him down.

Bigelow intimidates Austin, who scurries back into the ring and whips Takada before knocking the wind out of him with a kitchen sink. From here, Austin has things in his wheel house, stomping away at him, forcing him into the corner where he continues to stomp on him as he tries to rise to his feet, and then lighting him up with chops. Austin with a snap suplex and he rolls through in into a full mount, where he transitions into an armbar, but Takada’s technical ability is much greater and he reverses it into a boston crab, before transitioning into the Stepover Toehold Facelock as JR and Schiavone comment on the tribute to Lou Thesz, one of wrestlings greatest pioneers. Austin gets the ropes and then manages a tribute of his own with a Thesz Press, before wailing on Takada some more. At ringside, Eaton and Taylor get in each other’s faces and Austin gets distracted. He lips off the guys on the outside and turns around to eardrum bursting roundhouse kick. Austin is out, and Takada pins him to claim the Television championship. JR is shocked that the newcomer has claimed gold so quickly, but praises both men for a competitive bout.

Nobuhiko Takada def. Steve Austin to win the WCW TV Championship in 17:59.

q183l94.gifThe match begins with Ricky Steamboat sizing up Terry Gordy. Gordy has an unavoidable size advantage and Steamboat’s got to still be recovering from his war with Rick Rude. Gordy has the Freebirds in his corner, while Steamboat has Jushin Thunder Liger in his. Gordy starts punishing Steamboat early with clubbing blows, and then cleans his clock with a massive big boot. He follows this up with a couple scoop slams, and this is all Gordy in the early going. Gordy starts to heel it up, paint brushing Steamboat in the corner with this boot. The crowd rallies behind Steamboat who mounts a comeback attempt and Gordy is eating everything that Steamboat throws at him.

Finally, Steamboat staggers Gordy with a huge dropkick and he races up top where he goes for a crossbody, but Gordy catches him and rag dolls him across the ring. Gordy starts choking Steamboat and Nick Patrick pulls him off, resulting in Gordy talking back to the official. Steamboat catches Gordy with a roll up, but Gordy kicks out. From here, Steamboat puts pedal to the metal as he quickly barrages Gordy with everything he can muster. Steamboat locks in a double chicken wing, and Gordy barely makes it to the ropes, but he’s reeling now. Steamboat with another massive dropkick and Gordy’s on dream street. Steamboat up top, and he dives with the Crossbody for the win in a great, fast paced match. Steamboat recovers as he celebrates a hard fought win.

Ricky Steamboat (1-0-1) def. Terry Gordy (0-2-0) in 14:32.

March Week 3, 1992 - 3:30 PM - Rhythm

It's been a slow week at the WCW office, as the ship appears to be on course, the personnel changes seem to have ceased, the backstage environment is near perfect, the company is profitable, rating continue to be positive and the approach is nearly universally understood by viewership at this point. The meetings this week have been calm and collected, there hasn't been much urgency, and everyone seems unified in the direction. Luger's extension has calmed any tension felt by the group, as all parties feel like they are succeeding.

9HkbptP.jpg

Dusty Rhodes

"The format is getting real good. I think that axing Harley's 'Race to 180' segment was the right call. It didn't feel important like Inside the Squared Circle does. Maybe it's overexposure on the show for Harley, as he's already on the open and the close, but it just felt forgettable. Besides, the press conference segments feel less talk-showy and more sports oriented. More of those will only help our cause."

62nv7wi.jpg

Jim Ross

"And with Harley taking on the Head Coach position, I think he has enough on his plate. So it doesn't feel like we've robbed him of somethin important."

9HkbptP.jpg

Dusty Rhodes

"The one thing I feel like we are missin right now, is asserting my position to the audience. We are 6 weeks in and we haven't done anything to inform the audience of what my power is and it's got to be confusin for the folks at home to see my title on screen, but no display of what that entails. I think we need to come up with an angle for me to look the part in, as opposed to just a member of the broadcast analysis panel."

mgHtHgc.jpg

Paul Heyman

"Agreed - a powerful character needs a powerful story. Maybe we could do an angle where you learn that Dustin isn't really your son, that your wife had cheated on you and you start to alter the matches he's in to put him at a disadvantage? Sort of like an evil boss character?"

9HkbptP.jpg

Dusty Rhodes

"N... no, Paul..."

AROUND THE WORLD

- Vince McMahon and Bruno Sammartino appeared on Larry King opposing each other, and things got very heated. A scandal is mounting for the WWF.

- The scandal was escalated on the Phil Donahue show, when the host implied huge abuse of drug usage gone unchecked as well as a Caligula-esque amount of gay sex happening behind the scenes and several male employees have been abused by the higher ups. Wild stuff. Vince downplays everything though, and those in the know believe that hush money will allow this scandal to go unchecked.

- In more progressive women’s wrestling news, The LPWA was able to reach an agreement with WMC-TV 5 to broadcast their shows going forward.

- PWI Magazine’s March edition highlighted Brian Pillman as a rising star who’s only getting brighter. Also highlighted was new wrestler Hyobe Aida, who graduated from the All Japan Dojo in January.

- El Canek won the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship, defeating Cien Caras to claim the belt for the first time. This shocking development comes just two months after El Canek was appointed booker of CMLL… This recent development as well as a string of poor quality shows has alienated enough fans that CMLL’s size has dropped down from Big to Medium.
