The League, Redux: Seasons 8 and Beyond Game Thread

Recommended Posts

For posterity’s sake (since I did have a question come up indirectly about it), The League’s XP scaling has been edited into the fourth post of the thread.

In addition, the stat update/XP spending dates of all GMPC characters has been added to the same post.

For those reading along at home and wanting to join in this week’s prediction game, you have roughly 8.5 hours from the time of this post!

THE LEAGUE: SEASON EIGHT, WEEK TWO

dTs8j7q.jpgT127n44.jpgBlood River (0-1, OVR 400) vs. Diamond (0-1, OVR 401) 0rDaDU8.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION

This was a closer match than the rating would have you believe.  River took an early advantage, but a failed missile dropkick about nine minutes in opened the door for Diamond to storm back.  She was the first to try for a finisher, but four attempts to land the 24 Karat Kiss went for naught.  River nearly got off a Crimson Regret only to be rushed by Diamond to thwart it.  In the end, however, it was River’s counterpunch to stop a spear from Diamond before delivering one of his own that decided the match.  This could have gone either way and was a good bout to open the show on for the second week of The League.

Blood River (1-1) def. Diamond (0-2) via Pinfall (Spear) in 12:58.  Rating: **

Changes for Blood River:  OVR + 4.13, XP + 559.16, minor damage to head

Changes for Diamond:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.79, no notable damage

ZCYwviV.jpgAngela Wassermann (0-1, OVR 400) vs. Markus Clay (0-1, OVR 400) N0Y594C.jpg

BETA DIVISION

Wassermann showed up this week with a chip on her shoulder, and it showed as she took an early advantage in this contest.  Clay fought back, and at once could have been ahead on points if wrestling matches were judged on them, but Clay’s tendencies to go airborne cost him in the end.  An attempted springboard splash got sidestepped into an STF, and being too far from the ropes, Clay had to tap before any serious damage was done.

Angela Wassermann (1-1) def. Markus Clay (0-2) via Submission (STF) in 9:43.  Rating: ***

Changes for Angela Wassermann:  OVR + 5.11, XP + 682.57, no notable damage

Changes for Markus Clay:  OVR + 0.71, XP + 170.64, no notable damage

hlph25Q.jpg George Mastachas (0-1, OVR 399) vs. Big Scott Weathers (0-1, OVR 400) OOiJTFx.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION

If you only watched the first seven minutes of the match, you’d be excused to think that Weathers won in a squash.  Those who did that were surprised to find the match still going on a few mintues later, with Mastachas having clawed his way back into contention.  However it would be Weathers, that cheating no-goodnik, who would catch Mastachas with a  low blow when the ref was out of position to garner the pinfall and the victory in an otherwise underwhelming match.

Big Scott Weathers (1-1) def. George Mastachas (0-2) via Pinfall (Low Blow) in 18:52.  Rating: **

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR + 4.47, XP + 733.58, minor damage to head

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR -0.08, XP + 183.40, minor damage to head

va4qjuU.jpg Sterling Silver (0-1, OVR 400) vs. Sven Ulafsson (1-0, OVR 402) 9VJLBCy.jpg

DELTA DIVISION

We go now into the block of Delta Division action for the show, starting with a tremendous clash of styles.  This turned out closer than it had any right to be for the first seven or eight minutes, as Silver kept Ulafsson off-balance with her speedy arsenal.  She got caught one time into a clothesline, though, and that was the opening Ulafsson needed to control most of the remainder.  Silver would make a brief comeback attempt, but in the end the power game was too much, and Sven moves to 2-0 in the bottom division with a hard-fought victory.

Sven Ulafsson (2-0) def. Sterling Silver (0-2) via Pinfall (Pure Power) in 12:54.  Rating: ***

Changes for Sven Ulafsson:  OVR + 5.35, XP + 526.71, minor damage to head

Changes for Sterling Silver:  OVR + 0.74, XP + 131.68, minor damage to head

JpyUoje.jpg Sin (0-1, OVR 401) vs. Brian Blackfield (1-0, OVR 404) RdUenQh.jpg

DELTA DIVISION

This was a contender for Match of the Night early on.  Blackfield had Sin worn down early, but she kept fighting back, clawing her way into the advantage and actually being the first to hit her finisher.  Unfortunately for Sin, that just woke Blackfield up.  Four moves later, Blackfield connected with the Scotland Destroyer, and the adrenaline rush once more proves to be to the benefit of Brian Blackfield, who remains undefeated in the young season.

Brian Blackfield (2-0) def. Sin (0-2) via Pinfall (Scotland Destroyer) in 16:43.  Rating: ***

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 5.63, XP + 528.69, minor damage to head

Changes for Sin:  OVR + 0.78, XP + 132.17, minor damage to head

AOP9il0.jpgNldKaI4.jpg Christian Priest (1-0, OVR 405) vs. The Siberian Nightmare (0-1, OVR 401) Eda7f6d.jpg

DELTA DIVISION

As expected given the size of the combatants in this match, this was a hard-hitting slugfest.  Even the referee wasn’t immune to it, as he was taken out by a Nightmare reversed Irish Whip about 10 minutes in. Nightmare nearly had the match won with a powerbomb held into a pin, but Priest got a shoulder up at 2.5, broke a strong gut buster, and thirty seconds later hit his lariat finisher to move to 2-0, joining Brian Blackfield and Sven Ulafsson at that level.

Christian Priest (2-0) def. The Siberian Nightmare (0-2) via Pinfall (Canonized) in 14:15.  Rating: **

Changes for Christian Priest:  OVR + 4.21, XP + 486.84, no notable damage

Changes for The Siberian Nightmare:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.71, minor damage to head

vz0qqDp.jpg Monty Dhillon (1-0, OVR 405) vs. Otto von Schwarz (0-1, OVR 400) 7i2wu7j.jpg5MMzLA4.jpg

DELTA DIVISION CAGE MATCH

Before the lead-up to the match, Tori Montgomery pointed out to the audience that The Aerie keeps three rings for training at all times.  It helped for nights like tonight, when one could be set up for a cage all night ahead of time, one to start a European Rules match, and the third to serve as the “main” ring for the show. When you’re trying to keep things small and intimate, any little bit of preparation helps!  As for the cage itself, the cage differed from more “mainstream” cage matches as The Aerie has the older-school “barred” cage instead of the more modern chain-link cage.  This was in deference to the larger participants, to give them a better set of hand- and footholds to climb out of the cage, and because The League was not traveling for season eight, the barred cage could be stored more easily instead of dealing with the hassle of transporting it.

But I’m sure you all want to know about the match itself, and not the background setting, right?  It’s probably a good thing that the ring was reinforced as a lot of high-impact slams and bombs were delivered throughout.  The end of the match came a bit suddenly, which ruined the overall rating, as Dhillon simply delivered a closed-fist uppercut to Otto’s groin, and casually climbed out of the ring while the giant tried to recover. By the time Otto even got to a knee, it was too late, and Dhillon becomes the fourth wrestler to move to 2-0 in the bottom division.

Monty Dhillon (2-0) def. Otto von Schwarz (0-2) via Cage Escape (Low Blow) in 11:26.  Rating: **

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR + 4.05, XP + 485.49, no notable damage

Changes for Otto von Schwarz:  OVR + 0.64, XP + 121.37, minor damage to head

9wxABJw.jpg Diego Rodriguez (0-1, OVR 401) vs. El Tornado (1-0, OVR 405) LTFF6jR.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION

Another case of “blink and you missed it,” this one ended quickly.  For the first couple of minutes, it looked like Rodriguez’s match to lose, until a seated running dropkick stunned the Spaniard.  Tornado never stopped from there, driving the wind from his opponent with a springboard senton bomb that managed to get three on the count.  Going even faster than last week’s bout, Tornado all but assures himself to remain in the Gamma Division lead via tiebreakers after this week.

El Tornado (2-0) def. Diego Rodriguez (0-2) via Pinfall (springboard senton bomb) in 7:47.  Rating: **

Changes for El Tornado:  OVR + 3.84, XP + 556.30, no notable damage

Changes for Diego Rodriguez:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.07, no notable damage

ginc2gw.jpg Terrance Stevens (0-1, OVR 401) vs. Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-0, OVR 404) ZThYhej.jpgAAdEYyr.jpg

BETA DIVISION

Another Match of the Night contender, by all rights Ouilette should have had this one won in under nine minutes.  But Stevens had Le Petit Mort well-scouted, preventing it from being hit on no fewer than three occasions.  He’d make a comeback, only for Ouilette to avoid the Maple Leaf Meltdown on two occasions.  The third one, though, struck home for Stevens, and a quick three-count later netted the Canadian the win, much to the chagrin of Cecile Corine at ringside.

Terrance Stevens (1-1) def. Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-1) via Pinfall (Maple Leaf Meltdown) in 16:23.  Rating: ***

Changes for Terrance Stevens:  OVR + 5.60, XP + 687.08, minor damage to head and body

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR + 0.78, XP + 171.77, minor damage to head

2X2r9qf.jpg Indigo Rose (0-1, OVR 401) vs. Mel O'Hallister (1-0, OVR 404) e8cytyP.jpg

BETA DIVISION FIRST BLOOD MATCH

If we’re being fair to O’Hallister here, he should have had this match won any number of times after the twelve-minute mark.  After all, he had delivered so many hard shots to Rose’s cranium that it’s a wonder she didn’t suffer a concussion through it all.  Implant DDTs and stump piledrivers did nothing for O’Hallister, though, and in the end it wasn’t her trademarked variated DDT that did the trick for Rose, but a stump piledriver of her own to even her record on the season in what to this point was the Match of the Night.

Indigo Rose (1-1) def. Mel O'Hallister (1-1) via First Blood (Stump Piledriver) in 18:04.  Rating: ***

Changes for Indigo Rose:  OVR + 5.99, XP + 688.21, major damage to head, minor damage to body

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR + 1.83, XP + 172.05, minor damage to head

V1I70uc.jpg Jimmy Anarchy (0-1, OVR 402) vs. Yoshii Nakamatsu (1-0, OVR 405) giFlbJV.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION SUBMISSION MATCH

Much like last week’s submission match, neither competitor is known for their technical prowess.  So it boiled down into a hardcore match that could only be won by submission, when one goes back to review it.  The entire second half of this match was contested at ringside and included multiple piledrivers and DDTs through tables, a bout of choking via camera cables that ended up being for naught, and a missed chair shot that would ultimately spell the end of Jimmy Anarchy.  Not long removed from the missed chair shot, Nakamatsu would apply a clumsy Fujiwara armbar, but used one hand to bend the fingers back of Anarchy while in the hold.  The vibrations from the missed chair shot combined with that version of the submission hold was enough, and Nakamatsu emerges with a second win in the division.

Yoshii Nakamatsu (2-0) def. Jimmy Anarchy (0-2) via Submission (force submission) in 17:45.  Rating: **

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR + 4.41, XP + 561.80, minor damage to head

Changes for Jimmy Anarchy:  OVR -0.08, XP + 140.45, moderate damage to head

VfA2MW8.jpg Pulsar (0-1, OVR 399) vs. De'siree Mitchell (1-0, OVR 406) p54rf5F.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION

Pulsar must have been watching El Tornado’s match earlier in the night, because he tried the same tactic with the springboard senton bomb.  And to his credit, it produced the same result, stunning Mitchell just long enough to get the three.  The end came so quickly that it brought down the opinion of the fans, who may have been looking for a little more out of the second contest in the Alpha Division this evening.

Pulsar (1-1) def. De'siree Mitchell (1-1) via Pinfall (springboard senton bomb) in 9:11.  Rating: **

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR + 3.92, XP + 726.61, no notable damage

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR -0.07, XP + 181.65, no notable damage

iLs7NYn.jpg The Mastodon (1-0, OVR 404) vs. Reverend Johnny Gross (0-1, OVR 401) IgD64Oj.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION EUROPEAN RULES MATCH

Astute viewers would have noticed in one of the rings off to the side of the main one that this match had started at about the time the Nakamatsu/Anarchy match went to the outside.  Nothing of any interest happened here until the end of the fifth round—about four minutes after the sudden ending of the Pulsar/Mitchell contest—and that was when Gross locked in Come to Jesus on the Mastodon with twenty seconds remaining in the round.  Mastodon was able to hang on until the bell, but only barely.  Gross would take full advantage in the sixth, earning the first fall after a spinning elbow blow.  He deliberately applied Come to Jesus just four seconds before the end of the sixth round, just to play mind games with his larger opponent.  Before the midpoint of the seventh, the match was over courtesy of an implant DDT, and Gross evens up his record in the top flight.

Reverend Johnny Gross (1-1) def. The Mastodon (1-1), two falls to none, in 32:20.  Rating: **

Fall 1: Gross, pinfall via spinning elbow blow, 29:33.

Fall 2: Gross, pinfall via implant DDT, 32:20.

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR + 5.23, XP + 743.28, minor damage to head and body

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR -0.09, XP + 185.82, major damage to head, minor damage to body

zTBxNBX.jpg Jun Onoo (1-0, OVR 406) vs. Erick Gibson (1-0, OVR 404) xd5Rq8a.jpglimej5G.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION

Onoo dominated the first six minutes of this contest, absorbing what offense Gibson could muster.  It wasn’t until Karen McClure grabbed the ankle of Onoo on an attempted knee drop that Gibson was finally able to get into the match.  He made a solid run at evening the odds, but the size and power proved too much to overcome, and Onoo follows up the match of the night last week with another victory, staking an early claim to contendership for promotion out of the Gamma Division.

Jun Onoo (2-0) def. Erick Gibson (1-1) via Pinfall (IMPACT Driver) in 13:01.  Rating: ***

Changes for Jun Onoo:  OVR + 5.35, XP + 605.78, minor damage to head

Changes for Erick Gibson:  OVR + 0.74, XP + 121.16, minor damage to body

FqeSGy6.jpg Nuclear Templeton (1-0, OVR 403) vs. Brandy McDonald (1-0, OVR 403) TxXkh5U.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION

Bob Sinclair: Coming up is a match that will give the winner the outright Alpha Division lead once it’s all done!

Frankie Garnett: My money’s on Nuclear! You never bet against a man fueled by spite and hatred!

Tori Montgomery: Yeah, ask Anakin Skywalker how that worked for him, Frankie.

Frankie Garnett: We don’t care about movies, Tori; this is wrestling!

Tori Montgomery: Be that as it may, I think Nuclear’s stepping into a trap here.  Traditionally he struggles with female opponents about Brandy’s size; if he’s not careful she’s going to surprise him.

Bob Sinclair:  Both competitors are in the ring, and referee Jacob Henry calls for the bell, the penultimate match of week two is underway!

Frankie Garnett: It won’t last, Tori. All it takes is one slip-up!

Bob Sinclair: That remains to be seen, Frankie; McDonald needs to press the advantage while she has the chance.

Frankie Garnett: No, it’s just more humiliating to be knocked out by Nuclear’s non-lariat finisher.  Get her already!

BETA DIVISION

The main event of the evening did not even come close to some of the earlier matches on the show.  This was a quick and violent bout, with no quarter given nor received.  In the end, it was Billy Norris who stunned Simmons with a second rope dropkick and chained it into the Down Under Disaster who netted the victory and to go 2-0 in the Beta Division as week two draws to a close.

Good to see Nuclear well on the way to winning "most failed finisher attempts" for one season 😛

I sent an Intern Valerie to get an interview with Nuclear after the match, but they've mysteriously been out of contact ever since.  Missing, presumed nuked.  Valerie, we barely knew you.  RIP.

If I’d bothered to track that I think Nuclear would be ahead by like 2 over Terrance Stevens. It may be something I do for fun in Season Nine, but no promises.

OK, so I'm about to write out the MOTN for the week. Everything else is caught up, updated, and run as appropriate, and now that I'm back from weekend chores I can focus on the important things. 😎

Prediction leader is only 50% on the week with 8 correct guesses.

MOTN does not end in a fashion one would expect, and only gets the MOTN title for how long it took, given that it only got *** from Maven Deltzer in the ratings.

After three weeks, the ratings distribution looks like a bell curve indeed: DUD x 0, * x 4, ** x 23, *** x 20, **** x 1.

Average match length times:  Normal--13:07, Gimmick (all)--16:36, Overall--13:59. This means on average a League show, if everything aired fully, would take about four hours per week and no one has that sort of attention span every week.  This is why the other fifteen matches are cut short to show highlights only!

THE LEAGUE: SEASON EIGHT, WEEK THREE

va4qjuU.jpg Sterling Silver (0-2, OVR 401) vs. Sin (0-2, OVR 402) JpyUoje.jpg

DELTA DIVISION

Only avoiding squash match territory because of a Sterling Silver run of offense about nine minutes deep into this match, it was otherwise one-sided as Sin eventually busted open Silver—yes, through her mask—and delivered Depravity to notch her first win of the season.

Sin (1-2) def. Sterling Silver (0-3) via Pinfall (Depravity) in 13:08.  Rating: **

Changes for Sin:  OVR + 4.14, XP + 486.30, no notable damage

Changes for Sterling Silver:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.58, moderate damage to head

0rDaDU8.jpg Diamond (0-2, OVR 401) vs. Diego Rodriguez (0-2, OVR 401) 9wxABJw.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION

Seven minutes in, this seemed like a foregone victory for Rodriguez—he hadn’t suffered much offense, had Diamond busted open, and was firmly in control.  But the League Original proved why she is The First Lady of the League, mounting a comeback over the next six minutes that culminated with a sudden 24 Karat Kiss.  Rodriguez never saw it coming and three seconds later, Diamond found herself in the win column for the first time this season.

Diamond (1-2) def. Diego Rodriguez (0-3) via Pinfall (24 Karat Kiss) in 13:28.  Rating: ***

Changes for Diamond:  OVR + 5.39, XP + 606.05, no notable damage

Changes for Diego Rodriguez:  OVR + 0.75, XP + 151.51, minor damage to head

IgD64Oj.jpg Reverend Johnny Gross (1-1, OVR 406) vs. George Mastachas (0-2, OVR 399) hlph25Q.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION

A step down from the prior match, this was a perfectly average match that saw Mastachas stun Gross long enough after a low blow to hit a Wrath of Zeus for the pin, and his first win of the season.  Nothing else really to write about in this match.

George Mastachas (1-2) def. Reverend Johnny Gross (1-2) via Pinfall (Wrath of Zeus) in 13:23.  Rating: **

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR + 4.16, XP + 729.64, minor damage to head

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR -0.07, XP + 182.41, minor damage to head

N0Y594C.jpg Markus Clay (0-2, OVR 401) vs. Indigo Rose (1-1, OVR 407) 2X2r9qf.jpg

BETA DIVISION

Indigo Rose let this one slip out of her hands.  She had Clay vulnerable early, but made two or three mistakes too many that allowed the cruiserweight back into the match.  He didn’t squander those opportunities, landing a springboard senton in the end to earn his first win of the season in what was otherwise an average bout.

Markus Clay (1-2) def. Indigo Rose (1-2) via Pinfall (springboard senton bomb) in 11:07.  Rating: **

Changes for Markus Clay:  OVR + 4.03, XP + 630.94, no notable damage

Changes for Indigo Rose:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.73, moderate damage to head

5MMzLA4.jpg7i2wu7j.jpg Otto von Schwarz (0-2, OVR 400) vs. Christian Priest (2-0, OVR 409) NldKaI4.jpgAOP9il0.jpg

DELTA DIVISION

Priest should have had this one won about three minutes earlier.  He had Otto in trouble early, but telegraphed Canonized enough that the giant was able to counter with a straight right hand before Priest could finish the wind-up.  Otto would get some offense in but Priest wasn’t in too much danger, picking up the win to remain undefeated after a spinning elbow blow.

Christian Priest (3-0) def. Otto von Schwarz (0-3) via Pinfall (spinning elbow blow) in 11:56.  Rating: **

Changes for Christian Priest:  OVR + 4.08, XP + 485.73, minor damage to head

Changes for Otto von Schwarz:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.43, minor damage to head

LTFF6jR.jpg El Tornado (2-0, OVR 408) vs. Jimmy Anarchy (0-2, OVR 402) V1I70uc.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION

A step up from the last couple of matches, Anarchy dominated the opening minutes of the bout.  Tornado proved his resilience by fighting back, getting a close near-fall on Anarchy after a springboard guillotina, and at that moment seemed destined to move to 3-0 in the division.  But Anarchy stopped a top rope flying clothesline by hitting the ropes, threw Tornado off the top rope, and landed the Final Step to garner the victory.  A minor upset this early in the season, but a welcome one for everyone else in the Gamma Division as Tornado is proven to be as human as the rest of the division.

Jimmy Anarchy (1-2) def. El Tornado (2-1) via Pinfall (Final Step) in 11:11.  Rating: ***

Changes for Jimmy Anarchy:  OVR + 5.22, XP + 604.69, minor damage to head

Changes for El Tornado:  OVR + 0.72, XP + 151.17, minor damage to head

RdUenQh.jpg Brian Blackfield (2-0, OVR 409) vs. The Siberian Nightmare (0-2, OVR 401) Eda7f6d.jpg

DELTA DIVISION LAST ONE STANDING MATCH

Bob Sinclair: Changing gears, now we head to the Delta Division and a Lost One Standing match.

Frankie Garnett: Don’t you mean “Last Man Standing?”

Tori Montgomery: And how does that work when it’s two women facing off? Or a man against a woman, Frankie?

Frankie Garnett: Then you change it at that point!

Tori Montgomery: Easier to make it gender-neutral right off the bat, Frankie.  That said, I have to say Nightmare has the clear advantage in this match.

Bob Sinclair: Because he’s too big to get in the Scottish Destroyer, Tori?

Tori Montgomery: Got it in one, Bob.  Nightmare’s about 380 pounds, I just don’t see Norris being able to get him over into that piledriver. I’m not sure if Norris has another way to keep Nightmare down barring handcuffs or duct tape.

Frankie Garnett: I hate that we’re in agreement, Tori. It feels wrong.

Bob Sinclair: Both men are in the ring, the ref calls for the bell, and we are underway!

Tori Montgomery: …oooh, I get it. Clever.

Frankie Garnett: What?

Bob Sinclair: Looking for a stoppage, Tori?

Tori Montgomery: Makes sense, and that’s what I’m thinking.

Frankie Garnett: Would you two speak in terms the rest of us understand?!

Bob Sinclair: And the ref finally puts a stop to this one! It doesn’t matter who the last one standing is if it’s going to put the future health of someone in jeopardy!

Tori Montgomery: Good call by the official there, Blackfield was otherwise in serious control here.

Frankie Garnett: It still feels like a cheap way out of the match.

Tori Montgomery: That’s rich, coming from you.

Bob Sinclair: Regardless, Brian Blackfield moves on with a win in his pocket, and remains undefeated. We’ll be back after we get the ringside area cleaned up and re-sanitized. More to come when we come back!

Brian Blackfield (3-0) def. The Siberian Nightmare (0-3) via Blood Stoppage in 26:39.  Rating: ***

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 6.93, XP + 633.86, minor damage to head, moderate damage to body

Changes for The Siberian Nightmare:  OVR + 2.18, XP + 233.46, major damage to head, minor damage to body

This was the Match of the Night (1 [1st this season] for Brian Blackfield, 1 [1st this season] for The Siberian Nightmare)

VfA2MW8.jpg Pulsar (1-1, OVR 403) vs. Nuclear Templeton (1-1, OVR 404) FqeSGy6.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION

Pulsar is quickly becoming the king of quick and surprise wins.  He let Nuclear beat him down for the first 60% of the match, eating a Power Surge in the process, but an attempted second one got countered into a dropkick to the knee.  Pulsar would not relinquish control for the remainder of the match, hitting a springboard guillotina at just over seven minutes to stun the League Original and doom yet another intern to Armageddon after the show.

Pulsar (2-1) def. Nuclear Templeton (1-2) via Pinfall (springboard guillotina) in 7:21.  Rating: ***

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR + 4.94, XP + 785.73, no notable damage

Changes for Nuclear Templeton:  OVR + 0.68, XP + 196.43, no notable damage

e8cytyP.jpg Mel O'Hallister (1-1, OVR 405) vs. Daniel Simmons (1-1, OVR 405) ha8RmaF.jpg

BETA DIVISION

While this was a competitive match, there weren’t too many highlights in it.  O’Hallister wasn’t able to attempt his finisher, Simmons got his secondary finisher applied, and that was the difference in this match. The working man visits the pay window en route to a winning record.

Daniel Simmons (2-1) def. Mel O'Hallister (1-2) via Submission (Quitting Time) in 15:55.  Rating: **

Changes for Daniel Simmons:  OVR + 4.30, XP + 633.93, minor damage to head

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR -0.08, XP + 158.48, minor damage to head

ZCYwviV.jpg Angela Wassermann (1-1, OVR 405) vs. Terrance Stevens (1-1, OVR 406) ginc2gw.jpg

BETA DIVISION

The match only got interesting about thirteen minutes in, when a Terrance Stevens spear managed to take out the referee for a couple of minutes.  Nothing untoward happened while the official was down—no low blows, no chair shots or table spots—and Stevens had control when the ref recovered just in time to see the Maple Leaf Meltdown, and make the count to push Stevens to 2-1 on the season.

Terrance Stevens (2-1) def. Angela Wassermann (1-2) via Pinfall (Maple Leaf Meltdown) in 15:47.  Rating: **

Changes for Terrance Stevens:  OVR + 4.29, XP + 633.85, minor damage to head

Changes for Angela Wassermann:  OVR -0.08, XP + 158.46, minor damage to head

p54rf5F.jpg De'siree Mitchell (1-1, OVR 406) vs. The Mastodon (1-1, OVR 404) iLs7NYn.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION

Nothing flashy here, just high impact and two wrestlers trying to separate themselves in the top flight.  Much like a match earlier in the night, Mitchell was unable to hit her finisher on at least four occasions.  Mastodon got his in one, a left-armed lariat, and that was enough to prove the difference on this night.

The Mastodon (2-1) def. De'siree Mitchell (1-2) via Pinfall (Rampage) in 16:20.  Rating: **

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR + 4.33, XP + 731.76, minor damage to head

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR -0.08, XP + 182.94, minor damage to head

limej5G.jpgxd5Rq8a.jpg Erick Gibson (1-1, OVR 404) vs. Yoshii Nakamatsu (2-0, OVR 409) giFlbJV.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION

The story of this match can be summed up in a single word: “stamina.”  Gibson gassed himself out before the eight-minute mark, and from there he was easy pickings for Nakamatsu.  The DEVASTATION Knee into the Nakamatsu Driver was enough to keep Yoshii undefeated for another week.

Yoshii Nakamatsu (3-0) def. Erick Gibson (1-2) via Pinfall (Nakamatsu Driver) in 10:00.  Rating: **

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR + 3.97, XP + 557.52, minor damage to head

Changes for Erick Gibson:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.38, no notable damage

AAdEYyr.jpgZThYhej.jpg Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-1, OVR 405) vs. Billy Norris (2-0, OVR 409) ayWv1C3.jpg

BETA DIVISION

Spoilers: Norris wins. It’s how he got there that’s the intriguing part.  Ouilette spent far too long in the dancing lead-up to Le Petit Mort, giving Norris ample time to get out of the way of the eventual fist drop.  Norris controlled most of the remainder of the match, punishing Ouilette heavily while missing his first Down Under Disaster, getting tripped up by Cecile Corine when attempting a spear, and avoiding a second, quicker Le Petit Mort before finally connecting with the Disaster to remain undefeated in the Beta Division.

Billy Norris (3-0) def. Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-2) via Pinfall (Down Under Disaster) in 13:24.  Rating: ***

Changes for Billy Norris:  OVR + 5.38, XP + 685.06, no notable damage

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR + 0.75, XP + 137.01, major damage to head

dTs8j7q.jpgT127n44.jpg Blood River (1-1, OVR 405) vs. Jun Onoo (2-0, OVR 412) zTBxNBX.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION

Onoo certainly did not look like the same guy who’s gone 2-0 so far this season.  Blood River started attacking early, never letting up, and thoroughly pummeled Onoo until a Crimson Regret mercifully ended the slaughter.

Blood River (2-1) def. Jun Onoo (2-1) via Pinfall (Crimson Regret) in 13:04.  Rating: *

Changes for Blood River:  OVR + 2.92, XP + 512.61, no notable damage

Changes for Jun Onoo:  OVR -0.89, XP + 128.15, major damage to head, moderate damage to body

TxXkh5U.jpg Brandy McDonald (2-0, OVR 409) vs. Big Scott Weathers (1-1, OVR 404) OOiJTFx.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION

A Match of the Night contender, this one was back and forth from the opening bell.  Weathers looked like he may have had Brandy’s number on this night, but the Alpha Division leader fought back valiantly, forcing Weathers to play defense to avoid succumbing to the Brandy with a Twist.  It took her five attempts to land it, but finally she managed the feat, and escapes week three clinging to her perfect record.

Brandy McDonald (3-0) def. Big Scott Weathers (1-2) via Pinfall (Brandy with a Twist) in 18:17.  Rating: ***

Changes for Brandy McDonald:  OVR + 5.74, XP + 794.26, minor damage to head

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR + 0.8, XP + 198.57, minor damage to head

9VJLBCy.jpg Sven Ulafsson (2-0, OVR 408) vs. Monty Dhillon (2-0, OVR 409) vz0qqDp.jpg

DELTA DIVISION

What started off as a clash of undefeated titans in the Delta Division for our main event turned into something just barely avoiding a squash match.  Dhillon remained methodical, not wavering from his gameplan as he systematically wore Ulafsson down enough that his third attempt at the Empire Bomb would be the one that did the trick.  For at least one more week, the Delta Division has three wrestlers undefeated as we approach the quarter-point of Season Eight.

Monty Dhillon (3-0) def. Sven Ulafsson (2-1) via Pinfall (Empire Bomb) in 13:28.  Rating: **

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR + 4.16, XP + 486.46, no notable damage

Changes for Sven Ulafsson:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.62, minor damage to head and body

I predict that this will never..... eeeeeeeeeever happen 😛

…oh really?

WEEK FOUR SCHEDULE

ALPHA DIVISION

Brandy McDonald (3-0, OVR 414) vs. Reverend Johnny Gross (1-2, OVR 406): Brandy’s an overachiever; in this idea’s previous incarnation she went 14-2 in the opening season against more varied competition but could not win a title out of it. For the record, Gross went 12-4 that same season. I think she has Gross’s number this week.

George Mastachas (1-2, OVR 403) vs. The Mastodon (2-1, OVR 408): Mastodon normally doesn’t fare this well, I think he rides the momentum as long as he can and then crashes back to reality around week 6or so.

Big Scott Weathers (1-2, OVR 405) vs. Pulsar (2-1, OVR 408): This is actually Weathers’ debut season; he never appeared in the two-plus I did elsewhere. That ain’t gonna stop Pulsar though.

CAGE MATCH: Nuclear Templeton (1-2, OVR 404) vs. De'siree Mitchell (1-2, OVR 405): This is an opponent closer to Nuclear’s size. He struggles against smaller, quicker foes; Mitchell is not one of them and I think Nuclear moves back into the hunt here.

BETA DIVISION

Billy Norris (3-0, OVR 414) vs. Angela Wassermann (1-2, OVR 405): Ride the hot hand. Norris stakes an early claim to promotion.

LAST ONE STANDING MATCH:  Daniel Simmons (2-1, OVR 410) vs. Indigo Rose (1-2, OVR 407): I think this could be Match of the Night and can really go either way. Simmons just has more ways of keeping an opponent down. Rose could get lucky with her signature DDT, but I think Simmons takes it here.

Terrance Stevens (2-1, OVR 411) vs. Markus Clay (1-2, OVR 405): This may look like an upset but these two are well-matched. Plus there’s something about guys named Stevens in The League that make me want to pick against them….

FIRST BLOOD MATCH:  Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-2, OVR 406) vs. Mel O'Hallister (1-2, OVR 405): Another that could go either way.

GAMMA DIVISION

TABLES MATCH:  Yoshii Nakamatsu (3-0, OVR 413) vs. Blood River (2-1, OVR 407): This is the other contender for Match of the Night. Blood River’s doing well early on; he’s normally a losing-record kind of guy and his manager is completely inept. Yoshii should take this one.

Jun Onoo (2-1, OVR 411) vs. Diamond (1-2, OVR 406): Now that the first one has been gotten, I expect a return to form. Diamond should outlast Onoo and the stamina will play the key role.

Erick Gibson (1-2, OVR 404) vs. El Tornado (2-1, OVR 409): Tornado should be in contention for a Gamma Division crown, I don’t see him losing to the evil boss.

Jimmy Anarchy (1-2, OVR 407) vs. Diego Rodriguez (0-3, OVR 402): Neither of these records surprise me at this point; but in this one I give the edge to Anarchy and his Final Step.

DELTA DIVISION

Christian Priest (3-0, OVR 413) vs. Monty Dhillon (3-0, OVR 413): BIG MEATY MEN SLAPPING MEAT! One of only two PvP matches we’re guaranteed in the regular season (Tag Team Turmoil aside), this is just about a coin flip to me as to who’ll gain control of the division. I think Priest takes it, but only via manager interference.

Brian Blackfield (3-0, OVR 416) vs. Otto von Schwarz (0-3, OVR 400): Otto isn’t going to fall victim to the excessive blood loss issue. This is an upset pick.

Sin (1-2, OVR 406) vs. Sven Ulafsson (2-1, OVR 408): as much as I want to back Sin, I have to go with results I’ve seen so far this season. Sven takes this.

The Siberian Nightmare (0-3, OVR 403) vs. Sterling Silver (0-3, OVR 401): I’m not really surprised at either of these records, either. Total toss-up, I’m giving it to the bigger man who can piledrive the vulnerable head of Silver into oblivion.

I mean, in the dark mode skin I'm using all I can see are league divisions and big gaps so I'm not counting it 😛

Who do I contact about spending some of the XP I've got?  I thought it was Intern Michael but I've not been able to find him ever since he went to hand Nuclear his share of the purse for the last match.....

While I’m getting things ready for tomorrow, this is a reminder that Tag Team Turmoil is four weeks away. You may want to start putting some thought into who your partner is going to be—this event is one of the only opportunities to earn points in the Spirit stat.

From the GMPC roster, only Reverend Johnny Gross is spoken for, so that’s one less character to choose from.

THE LEAGUE: SEASON EIGHT, WEEK FOUR

Eda7f6d.jpg The Siberian Nightmare (0-3, OVR 403) vs. Sterling Silver (0-3, OVR 401) va4qjuU.jpg

DELTA DIVISION

This game continues to surprise the author.  In all of the matches run to date, this is the first time he’s seen this summary at the end: “This match was very one-sided, but despite it managed to remain at least watchable.” This ran about fourteen minutes longer than needed, ending only after Silver was on the verge of forcing the ref to stop the match for Nightmare’s health—he had taken heavy damage to the head and body and was also busted open to boot. A minor upset, and Silver gets her first win of the season.

Sterling Silver (1-3) def. The Siberian Nightmare (0-4) via Pinfall (On Wings of Silver) in 31:08.  Rating: **

Changes for Sterling Silver:  OVR + 5.16, XP + 494.94, minor damage to head and body

Changes for The Siberian Nightmare:  OVR -0.09, XP + 123.74, major damage to head and body

V1I70uc.jpg Jimmy Anarchy (1-2, OVR 407) vs. Diego Rodriguez (0-3, OVR 402) 9wxABJw.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION

A better-than-expected match out of the lower Gamma Division, Anarchy had the early edge but seemed determined to land Any Means Necessary.  Diego had it well-scouted, and only needed three attempts to lock in his submission finisher, getting the tap out just before the fifteen-minute mark.

Diego Rodriguez (1-3) def. Jimmy Anarchy (1-3) via Submission (Harmony of Dissonance) in 14:45.  Rating: ***

Changes for Diego Rodriguez:  OVR + 5.48, XP + 606.82, moderate damage to head

Changes for Jimmy Anarchy:  OVR + 0.76, XP + 151.71, minor damage to head

AAdEYyr.jpgZThYhej.jpg Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-2, OVR 406) vs. Mel O'Hallister (1-2, OVR 405) e8cytyP.jpg

BETA DIVISION FIRST BLOOD MATCH

Ouilette could have had this one wrapped up by nine minutes deep, except that he’s so used to finishing a match with Le Petit Mort that he didn’t stop to think that it wouldn’t bust O’Hallister open.  O’Hallister didn’t lose his train of thought when he got the opportunity, and one well-placed knee was enough to draw blood and move him to an even record on the season.

Mel O'Hallister (2-2) def. Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-3) via First Blood (running knee drop) in 14:01.  Rating: ***

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR + 5.67, XP + 685.48, minor damage to body

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR + 1.74, XP + 171.37, minor damage to head and body

FqeSGy6.jpg Nuclear Templeton (1-2, OVR 404) vs. De'siree Mitchell (1-2, OVR 405) p54rf5F.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION CAGE MATCH

This was as hard-hitting as you’d expect.  It was also shorter than one would have guessed, with both wrestlers looking to finish this quickly.  Nuclear went for Armageddon, could not connect, but managed to hit a Power Surge a minute later.  Instead of following up, though, he went to taunt the audience who had been getting under his skin for most of the match.  This allowed Mitchell to get back into it, and she did not waste time. One minute later, her only attempt at the All Out Blitz landed, and she got out of the cage before Nuclear could recover enough to even consider going for the door.

De'siree Mitchell (2-2) def. Nuclear Templeton (1-3) via Cage Escape (All Out Blitz) in 12:10.  Rating: ***

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR + 5.29, XP + 789.49, minor damage to head

Changes for Nuclear Templeton:  OVR + 1.46, XP + 197.37, minor damage to head

JpyUoje.jpg Sin (1-2, OVR 406) vs. Sven Ulafsson (2-1, OVR 408) 9VJLBCy.jpg

DELTA DIVISION

Sin tried everything she could think of to land Depravity, but Sven’s upper torso was just too big for her to properly apply the double arm DDT.  So instead she tried to settle for beating the stuffing out of Sven instead of, you know, going for blood.  Eventually Sven got tired of this and put Sin away, but not until the match ran past half an hour.

Sven Ulafsson (3-1) def. Sin (1-3) via Pinfall (Pure Power) in 32:09.  Rating: **

Changes for Sven Ulafsson:  OVR + 5.22, XP + 495.43, major damage to head, minor damage to body

Changes for Sin:  OVR -0.09, XP + 123.86, minor damage to body

limej5G.jpgxd5Rq8a.jpg Erick Gibson (1-2, OVR 404) vs. El Tornado (2-1, OVR 409) LTFF6jR.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION

Minor upset here, as Tornado seemed hesitant in going for his Tornado Splash. Gibson showed no such restraint, and a second attempt at the Terminable Offense brought Tornado’s momentum to a sudden halt.

Erick Gibson (2-2) def. El Tornado (2-2) via Pinfall (Terminable Offense) in 12:50.  Rating: **

Changes for Erick Gibson:  OVR + 4.13, XP + 559.08, minor damage to head

Changes for El Tornado:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.77, minor damage to head

RdUenQh.jpg Brian Blackfield (3-0, OVR 416) vs. Otto von Schwarz (0-3, OVR 400) 7i2wu7j.jpg5MMzLA4.jpg

DELTA DIVISION

So, remember Blackfield’s match last week? This was more of the same. Otto put up a little fight at the beginning but Blackfield eventually swarmed him into oblivion, and four minutes of focused offense after the bloodletting was enough to force the ref to stop the match.

Brian Blackfield (4-0) def. Otto von Schwarz (0-4) via Blood Stoppage in 21:34.  Rating: **

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 5.17, XP + 490.35, no notable damage

Changes for Otto von Schwarz:  OVR + 1.14, XP + 122.59, major damage to head

hlph25Q.jpg George Mastachas (1-2, OVR 403) vs. The Mastodon (2-1, OVR 408) iLs7NYn.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION

Mastodon had maybe two minutes of concentrated offense at the start, and basically nothing afterwards.  Mastachas dominated this one after the opening minutes en route to the easy victory.

George Mastachas (2-2) def. The Mastodon (2-2) via Pinfall (Wrath of Zeus) in 8:02.  Rating: *

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR + 2.72, XP + 665.30, no notable damage

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR -0.83, XP + 166.33, minor damage to head

zTBxNBX.jpg Jun Onoo (2-1, OVR 411) vs. Diamond (1-2, OVR 406) 0rDaDU8.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION

Jun was on the back foot for a fair portion of the match. Sure, he had a section of offense that nearly put Diamond in danger of losing, but the League Original had enough toughness within her to weather the assault and land a desperation 24 Karat Kiss for her second straight win in the division in what was otherwise an average match.

Diamond (2-2) def. Jun Onoo (2-2) via Pinfall (24 Karat Kiss) in 13:57.  Rating: **

Changes for Diamond:  OVR + 4.19, XP + 559.70, no notable damage

Changes for Jun Onoo:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.93, moderate damage to head

ginc2gw.jpg Terrance Stevens (2-1, OVR 411) vs. Markus Clay (1-2, OVR 405) N0Y594C.jpg

BETA DIVISION

This was a Match of the Night contender, and was just getting good when Markus Clay decided to take a shortcut, uppercut his opponent in the groin, and demand the ref count the pin afterwards.  A sudden end to an otherwise good match, and Clay uses the underhanded tactic to pull even in the division after four matches.

Markus Clay (2-2) def. Terrance Stevens (2-2) via Pinfall (low blow) in 14:54.  Rating: ***

Changes for Markus Clay:  OVR + 5.49, XP + 686.07, minor damage to head

Changes for Terrance Stevens:  OVR + 0.76, XP + 171.52, minor damage to head and body

OOiJTFx.jpg Big Scott Weathers (1-2, OVR 405) vs. Pulsar (2-1, OVR 408) VfA2MW8.jpg

ALPHA DIVISION

Pulsar was in the midst of a comeback, perhaps getting ready for the Zodiac Implosion, when Weathers took momentary control and distracted the ref by starting to removing the turnbuckle pad.  As the ref turned to deal with that, Weathers got in a low blow outside of the ref’s vision, and by the time he turned around, Weathers was already into the cover.  A three-count later, Weathers steals a win in the top flight, putting a serious damper on Pulsar’s momentum so far.

Big Scott Weathers (2-2) def. Pulsar (2-2) via Pinfall (low blow) in 14:00.  Rating: **

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR + 4.19, XP + 730.08, minor damage to head

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR -0.07, XP + 182.52, minor damage to head

ha8RmaF.jpg Daniel Simmons (2-1, OVR 410) vs. Indigo Rose (1-2, OVR 407) 2X2r9qf.jpg

BETA DIVISION LAST ONE STANDING MATCH

Bob Sinclair: Changing gears into the Beta Division now, coming up is a rather intriguing matchup, Tori.

Tori Montgomery: Indeed, Bob. Indigo Rose is a technical specialist, Daniel Simmons is the epitome of the working man, and someone needs to stay down for a ten count!

Frankie Garnett: Or, you know, be bleeding so badly the Red Cross shows up to collect.

Tori Montgomery: …that, too.

Bob Sinclair: I’ll admit, this is the one I’ve been waiting for all week, so let’s get right to it as the bell sounds!

Bob Sinclair: I think the crowd reaction here at The Aerie will give you the answer, Frankie.

Frankie Garnett: Oh, please. We all know these are people paid to be here to control the narrative.

Tori Montgomery: And here I am without a nutritional supplement to hawk on the back of that ridiculous statement.

Bob Sinclair:  Can we focus on the match, you two?

ayWv1C3.jpg Billy Norris (3-0, OVR 414) vs. Angela Wassermann (1-2, OVR 405) ZCYwviV.jpg

BETA DIVISION

Norris wasted no time in asserting his dominance of the Beta Division, putting Wassermann away just before the eight-minute mark. Unofficially (at least until the season is over and these are made official and actually checked by League statisticians), it’s the second-quickest win in Season Eight so far.

Billy Norris (4-0) def. Angela Wassermann (1-3) via Pinfall (spear) in 7:59.  Rating: **

See the previous match, but a different division.  McDonald caught Gross unaware with a spear, and that quickly she re-asserted herself atop the division, becoming the first to actually have a two-match lead on the majority of the field.

Brandy McDonald (4-0) def. Reverend Johnny Gross (1-3) via Pinfall (spear) in 9:49.  Rating: **

Changes for Brandy McDonald:  OVR + 3.96, XP + 727.07, no notable damage

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR -0.07, XP + 181.77, no notable damage

giFlbJV.jpg Yoshii Nakamatsu (3-0, OVR 413) vs. Blood River (2-1, OVR 407) T127n44.jpgdTs8j7q.jpg

GAMMA DIVISION TABLES MATCH

The first cracks in the standings happened in the Gamma Division.  In what could be considered a minor upset, Blood River won in spectacular fashion, using his Crimson Regret top rope legdrop to put Nakamatsu through a table, and for the moment put himself in discussion for promotion in the early stages of the season as the new Gamma Division leader via tiebreaker.

Blood River (3-1) def. Yoshii Nakamatsu (3-1) via Table Break (Crimson Regret) in 11:19.  Rating: **

Changes for Blood River:  OVR + 4.04, XP + 558.25, no notable damage

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.56, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

In our main event, these two men started throwing bombs early and often.  Dhillon had an early advantage, but a missed Livewire Lariat attempt allowed Priest back into the contest.  Priest would whittle Dhillon’s stamina and energy down, and when the moment was right, pronounce his Judgement on Dhillon to score the pinfall, remain undefeated, and be on top of the Delta Division as week four comes to an end.

Christian Priest (4-0) def. Monty Dhillon (3-1) via Pinfall (Judgement) in 11:07.  Rating: **

Changes for Christian Priest:  OVR + 4.03, XP + 485.34, no notable damage

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.33, minor damage to head

Intern Bryan's parents called asking if we'd seen him around recently, or heard from him in any way because he's not been responding to their messages or been back to their basement for a while.  I took the liberty of photoshopping some pictures of him visiting Macchu Pichu and telling them that he is out of cell phone range for a while as he goes out into the world to "find himself", something that Nuclear Templeton has promised no-one else will ever do with him again....

I plan to run the majority of these tonight after work. My schedule got a little mixed up this week so I’m actually behind a bit given the last four weeks; I aim to remedy that tonight.

I should be a stickler to the rules—it’s my show after all—but I’ll allow this one to slide. Life happens to us all. I’ll get them added in when I go to start the 12 matches I’m behind on.

Life happened to me this week too in the form of work mentally kicking my backside all week and wanting to go to sleep at 7:30 local every night, and my usual NPC match running night was preempted by Dynamite this week. So I’m willing to be a touch more lenient this week, haha.
