The League, Redux: Seasons 8 and Beyond Game Thread

Recommended Posts

I’m going to be starting GMPC bouts tonight now that I’ve had the holiday weekend to gorge on Tactics Ogre Reborn (over 100 hours deep now and still a ways to go to finish side quests before the story ends, much less platinum the game!). So for the last time this season…

Brandy, Nuclear, Weathers, Mastachas

O’Hallister, Simmons, Clay, Stevens

River, Nakamatsu, Onoo, Diamond

Blackfield, Priest, Dhillon, Nightmare

Thus, I predict that these will be the divisional changes:

* In Alpha, Brandy has already clinched the League Championship. The top four win their matches to keep standings pretty much as they are. It’s Mitchell who drops to Beta, being replaced by…

* …Simmons, who wins a three-way tiebreaker to move up. At the lower end, Rose’s loss sends her to Gamma…

* …Where River has already clinched. The four matches end up with Tornado dropping into the Delta Division…

* …Where Brian Blackfield and his undefeated record replace him. Out of sight of the cameras, Christian Priest and Monty Dhillon heave sighs of relief knowing they won’t have to deal with Blackfield next season. Sin, Otto, Nightmare, and Sven are all dropping from Delta, replaced by one new PC (confirmed), possibly a second and/or third, and at least one GMPC who I will shuffle things around for to ensure she gets in for Season Nine, so that a proper test of the surgery mechanic can be done. Even if that means Silver (who should be safe in 4th place) gets demoted to Omega as well.

You'd think, having clinched the prediction title, that I'd have a clue what I was doing. The reality is, of course, that everyone else missed one or more weeks.

These absences were entirely unrelated to sightings of me walking around backstage with a dented baseball bat. I swear!!!

THE LEAGUE: SEASON EIGHT, WEEK FOURTEEN

DELTA DIVISION

 5MMzLA4.jpg7i2wu7j.jpg (6) Otto von Schwarz (4-9, OVR 421)

vs.

(5) The Siberian Nightmare (5-8, OVR 429) Eda7f6d.jpg

Bob Sinclair:  Good evening, ladies, gentlemen, and everyone else, and welcome to the final week of this season of The League!  Sixteen matches, and a few hours, separate us from knowing where some wrestlers will be competing next season.  Bob Sinclair, here at the desk with Frankie Garnett and Tori Montgomery. Tori, this is your last week here with us before retiring to focus on your children, what are you keeping a close eye on tonight?

Tori Montgomery: While the natural answer is to see what becomes of the Alpha Division relegation race and the Beta Division championship, just to see who’s in Alpha next season, I’m watching the entire Gamma Division tonight. Every match coming in has the potential to affect who’s getting sent to Delta in place of Brian Blackfield.

Frankie Garnett: And that’s who I’m watching, Tori.  It’s a rather safe bet given the last thirteen weeks that Blackfield is not going to be denied his perfect record.  I only wonder if the Gamma Division will take notice around all the jockeying for position they’ll have going on!

Bob Sinclair: We’ll get to that later on, folks. Right now, we’re starting with a Delta Division match that’s largely for pride and little else, as the giant Otto von Schwarz faces The Siberian Nightmare in a rematch from Week Seven.

Tori Montgomery: Nightmare won that one in fifteen minutes to open week seven, I’d have to think he’s favored to repeat it here, Bob.

Frankie Garnett: Look, the only Delta Division match I care about is Blackfield’s. Why are we even showing this anyway?

Bob Sinclair: Because it’s the last week of the season, Frankie.

Frankie Garnett: Like that means a hill of beans!

Tori Montgomery: That’s a decision from on high, Frankie. Just suck it up and deal with it.

Bob Sinclair: In any case, here’s the opening bell, and the final week of the season is officially underway!

Tori Montgomery: Well if you’d came around earlier before one of these shows, you’d have seen for yourself, Frankie!

Tori Montgomery: And that’s why we have backups already set up, Frankie.

Bob Sinclair: That might be the one thing I miss when we go into next season, is having the extra rings ready just in case.

Tori Montgomery: I wouldn’t be so quick to grieve, Bob. You never know what’s coming up.

The Siberian Nightmare (6-8) def. Otto von Schwarz (4-10) via Pinfall (Siberian Avalanche) in 14:57.  Rating: ****

This was the Match of the Night (2 [2nd this season] for The Siberian Nightmare, 2 [2nd this season] for Otto von Schwarz)

BETA DIVISION

 2X2r9qf.jpg (8) Indigo Rose (4-9, OVR 422)

vs.

(5) Terrance Stevens (6-7, OVR 431) ginc2gw.jpg

Most other weeks, this could have been Match of the Night.  It just had the misfortune of going on after that surprise of an opening bout.  This was close throughout, with neither participant getting any sort of an edge until about thirteen minutes in.  That’s when Rose locked in the Vite d’Indaco, but could not get the submission as Stevens somehow found a way out of the inverted STF.  Rose was undeterred, and hit Blood from a Rose, successfully busting Stevens open…only for Stevens to go right on the attack and batter away the slight advantage Rose had fought to gain.  A stump piledriver attempt by Stevens went for naught, and Rose fought back with two more Blood from a Rose DDTs, each one netting two and each one worsening the laceration on Stevens’ forehead.  A second attempt at Vite d’Indaco was thwarted by the ropes, at which point Rose hit her fourth signature variated DDT. This one finally kept Stevens down, and Rose has done her part in attempting to stave off relegation.  If Clay loses to second-ranked Ouilette, it will be Clay who drops to Gamma, and Rose somehow remains in the Beta Division!

Indigo Rose (5-9) def. Terrance Stevens (6-8) via Pinfall (Blood from a Rose) in 18:09.  Rating: ***

Changes for Indigo Rose:  OVR + 5.73, XP + 688.27, minor damage to head

Changes for Terrance Stevens:  OVR + 0.79, XP + 172.07, minor damage to head and legs

DELTA DIVISION

vz0qqDp.jpg (3) Monty Dhillon (9-4, OVR 441)

vs.

(8) Sin (2-11, OVR 412) JpyUoje.jpg

Because she was facing one of the Delta Division’s Big Three, Sin could not simply ask for this one to happen off-camera.  So as it stood, the fans got to watch twenty minutes of Sin being unable to hit Depravity because Dhillon was too large for her. In desperation, she started rubbing his face into the mat, which opened a small wound on Dhillon.  From there, Sin channeled her inner Pride, knowing she could worsen the laceration in the same manner, and spent the next fifteen minutes hitting about two dozen Cast the Stones, a fair number of elbow and knee drops, and enough of rubbing Dhillon’s face into the mat that the ref eventually called a stop because he was worried about the blood loss from Dhillon.  While it would go down as a minor upset, it wasn’t a very entertaining one, and many thought Sin purposefully extended the match as a wrathful middle finger to League staff who refused to let her final bout occur off-camera.

Sin (3-11) def. Monty Dhillon (9-5) via Blood Stoppage in 35:12.  Rating: **

Changes for Sin:  OVR + 6.03, XP + 496.90, minor damage to head and body

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR + 1.33, XP + 124.22, major damage to head, moderate damage to body

GAMMA DIVISION LAST ONE STANDING MATCH

limej5G.jpgxd5Rq8a.jpg (7) Erick Gibson (5-8, OVR 422)

vs.

(3) Diamond (7-6, OVR 434) 0rDaDU8.jpg

Spoilers: another two minutes and this would have been Match of the Night.  The first time that The League had a pair of four-star matches in the same show (outside of Tag Team Turmoil), this one could have gone either way any number of times.  Diamond had an early advantage, Gibson fought back, only for Diamond to claw her way back into the match, and so forth.  Diamond was the first to connect with a signature, as her Jawjacker landed flush just shy of thirteen minutes in, but Gibson found fight back while being picked up for the 24 Karat Kiss (presumably).  He’d hit a strong chop to the chest, drop an elbow to her sternum, and catch her coming back up with a Terminable Offense before she could build any more momentum that’d lead to a finisher.  Gibson scores the upset, and just as quickly escapes the relegation fight that’ll unfold over the remainder of the night, as he’s assured a place in Gamma for Season Nine.

As this is the first time we’ve had two four-star matches in a show, I’m throwing the entire match play-by-play below, in case anyone is wondering how it actually went down:

ALPHA DIVISION CAGE MATCH

VfA2MW8.jpg (7) Pulsar (5-8, OVR 425)

vs.

(4) George Mastachas (7-6, OVR 429) hlph25Q.jpg

Mastachas took the fight to Pulsar early, utilizing his power to keep the luchador on the defensive.  Pulsar would find openings to fight back, and at one point controlled the offense for two solid minutes, including a slingshot senton that nearly won him the match before a slip three-fourths of the way up the cage wall allowed Mastachas to pull him back down.  Barely two minutes later, a slingshot guillotina would be enough to do the trick, and Pulsar gets out of the cage with another upset, though this one didn’t get received as well as the previous match. The win also assures Pulsar that he’ll remain in the top flight for Season Nine, as he will avoid relegation.

Pulsar (6-8) def. George Mastachas (7-7) via Cage Escape (slingshot guillotina) in 10:30.  Rating: **

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR + 4.00, XP + 727.56, no notable damage

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR + 0.63, XP + 181.89, minor damage to body

GAMMA DIVISION

9wxABJw.jpg (4) Diego Rodriguez (6-7, OVR 430)

vs.

(5) Jun Onoo (6-7, OVR 435) zTBxNBX.jpg

Gibson’s win over Diamond meant that Rodriguez was not out of danger yet.  A loss here, plus two other results going a specific way, meant he would be the one relegated to Delta.  Onoo was safely ensconced in Gamma for Season Nine so there was no pressure on him, and he seemed to know it as he was content to wrestle from the back foot in the match, looking to capitalize on Rodriguez’s mistakes.  Except the Spaniard didn’t really give Onoo many to work with.  Onoo had one shot at applying Lasting Agony, but Diego had it scouted and instead it was Rodriguez who would get the submission victory, with his secondary finisher that he usually reserves against larger opponents.  The win ensures that Rodriguez would also remain in the Gamma Division next season.

BETA DIVISION

AAdEYyr.jpgZThYhej.jpg (2) Jean-Paul Ouilette (8-5, OVR 438)

vs.

(7) Markus Clay (4-9, OVR 421) N0Y594C.jpg

Pivotal match on both ends of the Beta Division here.  Ouilette wins and he remains in contention for a Beta Division crown, Clay wins and he avoids relegation, forcing Rose into Gamma next season.

Both men seemed to step up their initial offense against each other at roughly the same time, but it was Clay who started getting lengthier stretches of offense at a time, and Ouilette was unable to match them.  The disparity would prove to be Ouilette’s downfall, as nearly losing to a springboard moonsault five minutes into the contest seemed to throw the Frenchman off his game the remainder of the match.  It took about as long for Clay to finally put Ouilette down with his patented moonsault, and the end result of the fifth upset victory of the night is Ouilette being eliminated from title contention, Clay remaining in Beta, and Rose being relegated due to tiebreakers.

Markus Clay (5-9) def. Jean-Paul Ouilette (8-6) via Pinfall (Johannesburg Express) in 10:51.  Rating: ***

Changes for Markus Clay:  OVR + 5.20, XP + 683.33, no notable damage

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR + 0.72, XP + 170.83, minor damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

LTFF6jR.jpg (8) El Tornado (5-8, OVR 426)

vs.

(2) Yoshii Nakamatsu (8-5, OVR 434) giFlbJV.jpg

With Rodriguez’s win over Onoo earlier, the result of this match was irrelevant.  It would be the Anarchy match later that would decide who was being relegated to Delta.  That said, Nakamatsu came in acting like Tornado owed him money, and for all we know he may have.  Tornado had a tough time getting any sustained offense going, while Nakamatsu had no such issues and took Tornado out after a third charging knee to the forehead.

Yoshii Nakamatsu (9-5) def. El Tornado (5-9) via Pinfall (DEVASTATION Knee) in 12:06.  Rating: **

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR + 4.09, XP + 558.68, no notable damage

Changes for El Tornado:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.67, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

ZCYwviV.jpg (6) Angela Wassermann (5-8, OVR 420)

vs.

(3) Daniel Simmons (8-5, OVR 440) ha8RmaF.jpg

Simmons needed to win this to have a shot at promotion. A win here plus Norris losing later meant he’d get the promotion due to tiebreakers.  A loss, and the winner of the O’Hallister/Norris match would earn the promotion into the Alpha Division.

From the jump, Wassermann seemed determined to play the spoiler.  She took it to Simmons early and often, in fact having Simmons in position for her cross arm breaker at least once before Simmons had really given her any sustained offense.  But Simmons would fight back, having scouted that patented submission of Wassermann’s extensively.  A Working Man’s Dropkick seemed to put Wassermann at risk for Quitting Time, but Angela fought free of it. A third Superman punch followed by a DDT sent Simmons to the mat, and finally Wassermann got her armlock applied.  Dead center of the ring, Simmons was forced to tap and watch his hopes of earning promotion go out the window. It would be the winner of our main event this evening who would earn promotion into the top flight!

Angela Wassermann (6-8) def. Daniel Simmons (8-6) via Submission (Cross Arm Breaker) in 14:41.  Rating: **

Changes for Angela Wassermann:  OVR + 4.23, XP + 633.16, minor damage to head

Changes for Daniel Simmons:  OVR -0.07, XP + 158.29, moderate damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

IgD64Oj.jpg (6) Reverend Johnny Gross (5-8, OVR 428)

vs.

(3) Big Scott Weathers (7-6, OVR 436) OOiJTFx.jpg

This match would determine who got relegated to Beta Division. Gross had to win to stay up, otherwise Mitchell would eke out of the relegation zone. While not terribly compelling, it was competitive, with neither man backing down against the other.  As is so often the case, one mistake is all it took, and that mistake was an opening Gross left for Weathers to jump on the offensive about fourteen minutes into the contest.  It’d be the last mistake Gross would make in this match, as Weathers eventually chained enough offense together into a Blackout to score the win, and ensure that Gross would be sent down into the Beta Division.

Big Scott Weathers (8-6) def. Reverend Johnny Gross (5-9) via Pinfall (Blackout) in 15:47.  Rating: **

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR + 4.29, XP + 731.36, minor damage to head

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR -0.08, XP + 182.84, moderate damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

iLs7NYn.jpg (5) The Mastodon (7-6, OVR 432)

vs.

(2) Nuclear Templeton (7-6, OVR 435) FqeSGy6.jpg

This match between Tag Team Turmoil partners was merely for bragging rights, as neither were in danger of relegation and the League Championship was long been clinched.  While not exactly a squash, this was a clearly dominant victory by Templeton, who had to win twice.  His first, after an Armageddon Lariat, was overturned when referee Jacob Smalls saw Mastodon’s right foot under the bottom rope right after he counted the pinfall.  The very next move, Nuclear applied a Radiation Leak to an already woozy Mastodon, and it was academic from there.  Templeton scores the win, and at least a moral victory as he finishes in the upper half of the Alpha Division after being in danger of relegation earlier in the season.

Nuclear Templeton (8-6) def. The Mastodon (7-7) via Submission (Radiation Leak) in 13:05.  Rating: **

Changes for Nuclear Templeton:  OVR + 4.14, XP + 729.42, no notable damage

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR -0.07, XP + 182.36, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

TxXkh5U.jpg (1) Brandy McDonald (9-4, OVR 443)

vs.

(8) De'siree Mitchell (5-8, OVR 423) p54rf5F.jpg

Mitchell came out of the locker room looking more relaxed than she had when she entered the building earlier today.  She knew she was safe in the upper division for another season—an upset win against the League Champ, and Gross would have the outright worst record in the Alpha Division.  A loss, and she wins the head-to-head tiebreaker over Gross by 56 seconds. So she literally had nothing to lose here as she faced the Season Eight champion in the final match of the Alpha Division season.

Give Mitchell credit, she made Brandy earn this one. Despite being in danger for almost the entirety of the match, Mitchell seemed to set herself up that way on purpose, as if scouting for next season and seeing as many different ways McDonald could attempt her finisher as she could first-hand.  Mitchell would claw her way back into the match, actually pushing McDonald into dangerous territory herself, but Mitchell could only avoid the Brandy with a Twist so many times before McDonald could get lucky and hit it.  It was the ninth such occasion when Brandy finally connected, and a three-count ended Mitchell’s chances of an upset.  This was a Match of the Night contender, and with good reason given the tenacity Mitchell had in fighting back from almost impossible odds.

Brandy McDonald (10-4) def. De'siree Mitchell (5-9) via Pinfall (Brandy with a Twist) in 16:53.  Rating: ***

Changes for Brandy McDonald:  OVR + 5.64, XP + 793.17, minor damage to head

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR + 0.78, XP + 198.29, moderate damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

dTs8j7q.jpgT127n44.jpg (1) Blood River (10-3, OVR 444)

vs.

(6) Jimmy Anarchy (5-8, OVR 426) V1I70uc.jpg

Anarchy’s fate was his to control. A win against the division champion, and he would remain in the Gamma Division, with Tornado dropping to Delta. A loss, and he would be the one dropping instead.

A competitive match throughout, the biggest takeaway from this encounter isn’t exactly who won, it’s how it happened.  About nine and a half minutes in, Anarchy thwarted a Crimson Regret attempt, and set about on offense, looking to bring River into position for the Final Step.  A series of mounted elbow smashes seemed to have River in dire straits, and as Anarchy went to the ropes to gain momentum for a running knee, the unthinkable happened.

The Acolyte interfered.

For the first time ever, including all of the years in the independent scene before they appeared in The League, The Acolyte interfered in a match, tripping up Anarchy as he came off the ropes.  Blood River looked stunned. Jimmy Anarchy looked equal parts stunned and furious. Our trio of commentators were shocked into silence.  Even the official wasn’t sure he had seen what he saw, even as he ejected The Acolyte from the ringside area.  Anarchy got hit by a low blow while the ref was doing his job regarding The Acolyte, and when he turned around it was all but academic for River.  A half senton, a full senton, and a Crimson Regret finished the job.  River wins, Anarchy is relegated to Delta, and there was a buzz in the locker room as the truly unthinkable had just happened.

Blood River (11-3) def. Jimmy Anarchy (5-9) via Pinfall (Crimson Regret) in 11:20.  Rating: ***

Changes for Blood River:  OVR + 5.23, XP + 483.82, no notable damage

Changes for Jimmy Anarchy:  OVR + 0.73, XP + 151.19, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

va4qjuU.jpg (4) Sterling Silver (7-6, OVR 433)

vs.

(2) Christian Priest (9-4, OVR 445) NldKaI4.jpgAOP9il0.jpg

The “breather” match before the final two matches of the night, this was in contention for Match of the Night on a card already crowded with such contenders.  Silver actually controlled most of the opening and middle portions of the match, but Priest finding odd spots here and there to get some offense in, but the key turning point was when Silver attempted her 450 splash and got nothing but mat for her trouble.  A long two count followed this, but that was Silver’s last big gasp of offense.  A few counters would see her get a little more offense in, but it wasn’t enough as Priest eventually wore her down enough to pronounce his Judgement on her, and finish the season with the second-best record in the Delta Division outright.

Christian Priest (10-4) def. Sterling Silver (7-7) via Pinfall (Judgement) in 17:37.  Rating: ***

Changes for Christian Priest:  OVR + 5.69, XP + 529.16, moderate damage to head, minor damage to body

Changes for Sterling Silver:  OVR + 0.79, XP + 132.29, moderate damage to head, minor damage to body

DELTA DIVISION

RdUenQh.jpg (1) Brian Blackfield (13-0, OVR 465)

vs.

(7) Sven Ulafsson (3-10, OVR 417) 9VJLBCy.jpg

The first of the double main event of the evening, this was quite simply Blackfield’s quest for a perfect record.  Standing in his way was a larger man, but one that Blackfield had put away earlier in the season in just over sixteen minutes.  Most pundits believed this would be a formality, and Blackfield would go into Gamma Division with an unblemished record.

They would be right, but it took longer than most expected.  As Ulafsson was still too big for Blackfield to hit the Destroyer on, he had to resort to a blood stoppage again, and the ref finally called a halt to the proceedings after the seventh Tartan Effect of the match connected.  Blackfield wins his fourteenth match, ends the season with a perfect record, and now moves to the Gamma Division to see if he can replicate the feat against new opponents.

Brian Blackfield (14-0) def. Sven Ulafsson (3-11) via Blood Stoppage in 28:17.  Rating: ***

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 5.59, XP + 493.58, minor damage to head and body

Changes for Sven Ulafsson:  OVR + 1.24, XP + 123.39, major damage to head

BETA DIVISION

e8cytyP.jpg (4) Mel O'Hallister (8-5, OVR 440)

vs.

(1) Billy Norris (9-4, OVR 439) ayWv1C3.jpg

And now, the second main event.  The winner of this match would win the Beta Division title and replace Reverend Johnny Gross in the Alpha Division next season.  Both knew the stakes of this match, and came out of their corners at the opening bell swinging.  This was a sprint from the start, and it never let up at any point.  Neither competitor got any sort of extended advantage in the first twelve minutes, but it was Norris who attempted to end the match first.  A Down Under Disaster was narrowly avoided, and the following roll-up only netted two for O’Hallister.  Off the reset, a stump piledriver stunned Norris, after which came the Dream of the Emerald Isle. That surely would do it…one, two, three—but wait! Norris had a foot on the ropes and the official missed it!  O’Hallister nearly got himself DQ’ed for arguing with the ref, but let Norris work himself into a mistake one more time before landing a second Dream. This time, it was dead center of the ring and O’Hallister stared down the ref, daring him to overturn this one as the official counted to three once again, and Mel O’Hallister, with the luck of the Irish, found a way into the Alpha Division in the end after all!

Mel O'Hallister (9-5) def. Billy Norris (9-5) via Pinfall (Dream of the Emerald Isle) in 14:46.  Rating: ***

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR + 5.48, XP + 685.98, no notable damage

Changes for Billy Norris:  OVR + 0.76, XP + 171.50, minor damage to head and body

Well done on the clean sweep season down in the Delta Division, doesn't matter what group you were in that's impressively difficult and unlikely to do.  Also congrats to myself for Nuclear being second best, living up to my exact pre-season expectaions 😛

And thanks to Shadowed, of course, for all the work, enjoy your entire birthmonth while we get ready to ruin your fun all over again with stats and whatnot :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Pausing my work on GMPC moveset updates for this announcement:

While training PMs aren’t due until February 3, I will be remaking all PC movesets to account updated stats a week earlier. So whatever stats I have for you on January 27 are what will be reflected in a revised moveset. If you don’t want to change your moveset at all, a quick PM to that effect will speed the process along so I know to skip a character.

In addition, feel free to double check your current TP use and what you have free. I think at least one of you may actually have 2 TP coming into this off-season, and I don’t have my sheet in front of me as I type this to confirm.

We now return you to your off-season break while I go back to work on the thankless task of updating 24 movesets, lol.

THE LEAGUE, FIRST INTERLUDE:  A DEVIL’S ROAD TO REDEMPTION

The Aerie School of Professional Wrestling—current home of The League

January 7, 2023

“I still think this is a mistake, sis,” Rebecca Solomon muttered as she sat in the passenger seat of the car, making certain her knee brace was secured to her left leg.  “There’s no guarantee he’ll even listen to you.”

“Bec, I know.  But what over the last ten years hasn’t been a damn mistake?!”  Jessica Solomon, perhaps better known to knowledgeable indie wrestling viewers as Devil’s Delight, said as she shut the ignition off.  “There have been so many things we’ve done wrong.  There’s so much [censored] we put ourselves through for them, and what do we have to show for it?  It has to start somewhere.  Why not him?”

“Because he’s the boss, Jess!  The last thing we need is the rest of these people claiming we’re getting an unfair advantage with extra ring time!”

“He runs a wrestling school now, or have you forgotten seeing this building here?  From what I’ve read, it was a decent one at that.  The other teacher at that school would be just what I need—a fighter, someone who used to be able to fly…hell, she could probably show Pulsar a thing or two given she used to use a shooting star legdrop as a finisher.  That’s right up my alley now.”

Rebecca frowned at this.  “I just wish you’d reconsider learning more technical aspects, Jess.  Until you get your wings back, you need something reliable to fall back on.”

The frustration was evident on Jessica’s face as she bit back a retort.  Almost unbidden, a voice from her time in rehab came into her mind.  Take a breath, give yourself a second or two to think before you answer.  She knew her big sister was trying to look out for her, but the slow, technical style was not something she liked.  She liked to move, she liked to fight.  She kept her sister’s old finisher as tribute to her, though Jessica had never really felt comfortable applying it in a match.  “The guy’s a submission expert.  If all else fails, I can ask about it, but you know as well as I do that stuff isn’t my style.”

“I know…”

“Look.  Worst that happens is he says no.  Then we’re right back where we started.”

“No, the worst that happens is he fires us for trying to get an unfair advantage before you even debut!”

Jessica just sighed and shifted her gaze out the windshield once more.  This was supposed to be The League’s “off-season,” with no one from the promotion even on the grounds.  Jessica felt it was the right time to make her case, as it were, despite what her older sister was saying.  Finally she pulled the keys from the ignition and looked at Rebecca, who had been watching her carefully.  A resigned nod was all that Rebecca needed to convey, and together the sisters left the car to walk towards the building, both of them donning face masks out of a sense of caution.

Plus, with everything they’d heard about the guy, maybe showing that much sense would help their cause in the long run.

It took them ten minutes for him to stop what he was doing with some of his students before they could speak to him.  The surprise conveyed by his eyebrows raising quickly vanished.  “Good afternoon, ladies. Aren’t you supposed to not be here for another couple of weeks yet?”

“Yes, that’s technically correct.  But we…or rather, I, came in search of you specifically, Will.”

He kept his voice carefully neutral as he replied.  “What about, exactly?”

“Teaching.”

“I’m not quite sure I follow, Miss Solomon.”

Jessica could feel her nerves tighten up.  In her past life, she often had to stare down the barrel of a gun while its owner may have been on one or more drugs.  But that seemed minor compared to the feeling she was experiencing right now.  “We all know that as it stands, I’m going to be outclassed out in the ring.  There’s years of ring rust that’ll inevitably lead to me being outwrestled, outpunched, outran, and generally overwhelmed.  It’s not how I envision a return to the ring going, and given the issues you had with Sin at the end of the season, it’s something I’d like to avoid if possible.  I almost feel like I need to go back to basics, relearn what I used to know before…everything else…happened.  I’ve done a little research on your school. Seemed to be mostly positive.  I’m hoping I can convince the teacher in you to help me get the rust off before the season starts.”

Will Prydor was silent for a few long seconds, thinking things over.  “You are aware that, for the sake of a level playing field, this looks wrong, correct?  I shouldn’t even be listening to this, if you’re going to be a full roster member in Season Nine.”

Jessica nodded, her gaze falling to the concrete floor beneath her.  “I understand.  I had to ask, just to be sure.”

“I’m not done.”  She dared to look up from the floor, dared to hope even a little.  “There is no rule in the ledger that says you are not allowed to train with a teacher on your own time.  Most everyone else in The League has been doing this for years, they feel like they don’t need a teacher.  Your best time would be in the evenings, after my classes are done, since I can’t deny the students who’ve already paid their instruction, and I need to keep the lights on here somehow.  But if you’re serious about this, come back here Monday evening, about 6:00. We can start getting the rust off of you then.”

Rebecca piped in from Jessica’s right.  “And what of the opinion of the rest of the locker room?”

Will shook his head.  “They haven’t walked in your shoes, Miss Solomon.  What right do they have to cast judgment against someone actively trying to improve themselves, actively trying to leave the shadow that is the Hell’s Marauders?”

He saw both of them visibly flinch at that name, and his tone softened a bit.  “I know you try to avoid that name at all costs, ladies, but let’s be realistic.  Others are going to throw your past in your face every chance they get, and say you’re not worth the time.  They’ll say that this is just a PR stunt by The League…by me specifically…to try to give the audience a feel-good story.  The question is…are you really going to let your past determine the rest of your lives, or are you going to do something about it?”

Jessica turned her head slightly to glance at her older sister, who simply nodded once.  The younger Solomon turned back to look squarely at Prydor.  “There’s a reason I don’t go by…” She paused, mustering up the courage to say the name she’d been avoiding uttering for years now.  “…by ‘Dark Rapture’ any more.  Same as why Rebecca doesn’t answer to ‘Crimson Ecstasy.’ We’re trying to move past that, past what those names entailed away from the two of us personally.”  Unbidden, quick flashes of images in her mind to the signature drug compound the gang called Dark Rapture, and the effects she had willingly put herself through under the influence of that chemical mixture on many occasions, came and went.

Prydor nodded at this.  “Every road starts somewhere. Whether it’s to a location or an ideal.”  He backed away a step, preparing to return to his class.  “Monday evening, right here.  Bring your workout gear.  Both of you.”

Rebecca seemed startled at this.  “Both?”

“Both.  Jessica’s not the only one who needs redemption, Rebecca.  Besides, she’s going to need a sparring partner when my second-in-command needs to give her knees a break. And I have a feeling that the people who told you that you’d never wrestle again were full of it, too.  Amelia's living proof of that.”

With that, Prydor turned back to his students and their grappling lessons, leaving both Solomon sisters to stare at each other in silent shock.  It may be too late in their lives for this to make any difference.  But if Prydor was right, and Rebecca could actually wrestle again?  If Jessica could find her bearings inside a ring once more?

That long road to redemption would have been well worth the journey, indeed.

  • 2 weeks later...

All right, folks.  An actual update with substance here, now that deadline for new signups has passed...

First off, the second post in the thread, which normally holds the updated standings, has had the link for the League schedule updated for Season Nine.  For ease of use, in case y'all don't feel like going to the first page, the updated schedule can be found through this handy little link thing.  The schedule seems heavily front-loaded with gimmick matches, and submission/table matches seem to be the most common variety this time around, with Last One Standing also being represented a fair bit. The schedule maker may get a tweak to adjust some of these chances next season as a result.

Secondly, the roster list in the third post of the thread has been updated for Season Nine as it presently stands.  Two new PCs, both handled by Eternal Phoenix, have entered the Delta Division, joined by new GMPCs Devil's Delight and Lord Robert Abernathy. They replace Otto von Schwarz, Sven Ulafsson, The Siberian Nightmare, and Sin in the lowest division. All GMPCs, both new PCs, and two returning PCs are fully updated with traits, updated signature/finisher stats, and stat points. The two I'm missing updates for traits and stats for an updated moveset, namely Christian Priest and Monty Dhillon, have until Friday night at 11:59 pm Eastern US to send me updates, otherwise I will be regenerating movesets with the stats currently on record over the weekend.

Finally, I believe I have come up with a suitable reward for the season-long prediction game.  Where in prior seasons the winner got to dictate the structure of The League (different divisions, and getting to choose who was in their division completely), the new format doesn't allow for that.  So instead, I have the following in mind:  The winner of the season-long prediction game gets to pick which two matches on the upcoming season's schedule will be their character's gimmick matches, and also get to pick which type of gimmick bouts they are. If the handler currently has multiple characters in play, this reward only applies to one of the characters. If the winner is someone who is not currently handling a League character, they get to pick any one character to make this change to.  I can see this adding enough of a wrinkle to things to feel like a proper callback to Ye Olden League Days, but still maintaining the structure I'm trying to keep hold of.

One other rule change for the prediction game, as well: while there are 14 weeks in the season, only the best twelve weeks for a predictor will be used to formulate scores.  In the event of a tie, the dropped scores will be compared until the tie is broken. If that does not break the tie, the lowest scores will be eliminated one at a time until the tie is broken. If that doesn't work, meaning the tied individuals have the exact same distribution of scores over the 14 weeks, joint winners will be declared.

That should cover all of the points I wanted to discuss, so it's back to the Excel workbook maintenance for me!

Nuclear Tempteton is here to mess you up, and has done the smart thing of putting Intern Derek in charge of predictions for this season.  Intern Derek is known for his ability to handle pressure and for quickly cleaning up puddle of urine that appear around him any time Nuclear walks nearby.

Miss Hida is uh, slightly incoherent at the best of times, her English is a little shaky, and my Japanese is almost non existent, but as I understand it she isn't promising wins, titles, or glory. Her only prediction is pain. The Carnival of Violence has come to The League, and it's Ringmaster plans to leave a wide swathe of bleeding and battered opponents. Whether she wins or not, nobody is leaving their matches with her unscathed. So the rest of the division should probably get ready. She and Lucas have uh, met before, so he is.

Speaking of Lucas, his plan is do his talking in the ring. Specifically, via his favorite sounds. The agonized cries of his opponents as they're stretched and contorted beyond human design specifications, and the rhythmic thudding of their hand on the mat as they tap out.

An update has been made to the Season Nine schedule.  Last season's prediction winner, Croquemitaine, has elected to make his gimmick matches this season a Cage match in week 7, to offset the 600+ Manager of Devil's Delight, and a Table match in week 11 to hinder the technical newcomer Lucas Molina.

As a result, I've had to go in and re-do the gimmick matches in the Delta Division to keep everything balanced, and have just finished doing so. The schedule as now shown is final and locked in.

With that being said, I'm also opening up predictions at this time for week one:

While my dinner is cooking, I'm going to get my predictions in so I can start getting ahead of things this week in terms of actual show production...

SEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS

Brian Blackfield will be in contention for the Gamma Division crown, but will not go 14-0 again.  I see 9-5, with three of those losses coming against Rose and Rodriguez, and missing out on promotion via tiebreakers.

The Delta Division, despite having the ruleset to allow for the fastest match times, will still feature a match by the end of the season that is longer than any Alpha Division match run in Season Nine.

At least one of the three people that were relegated last season (Gross, Rose, Anarchy) will suffer the same fate this season with another last-place finish--in Anarchy's case, it's a banishment to the Omega Division and a run off-camera to try to earn his way back.

With two people now being promoted from the lower divisions, I see River sneaking into the second transfer position and making it into Alpha next season.

In the top flight, Nuclear's new tricks take him to a must-win match in Week 14 to win the League Championship, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion as the ref overturns his victory due to a foot on the ropes. McDonald repeats as League Champion with a win in her final bout, beating out Templeton by four seconds in the tiebreaker.

In Delta, with four PCs in contention and with Brian Blackfield out of the division, Priest and Dhillon make up the opportunity and cruise to promotion, with Dhillion winning the division, Priest a match back, and Lucas Molina surprising many to finish third, two matches behind Priest. Devil's Delight manages to pull a reverse Blackfield, and goes 0-14 on the season thanks to being largely statted out in Manager Overall (a deliberate design choice, before anyone asks). She'll get an exemption to stay in Delta and in Season Ten will compete for a mid-table position as the redemption arc truly begins.

WEEKLY PICKS

ALPHA DIVISION: No clear advantages in the top flight--all three pairings that have prior history split the Season Eight matches.  So I'm going with the reigning champ McDonald, Mastodon, O'Hallister in his Alpha debut, and Nuclear.

BETA DIVISION: That submission match is going to be a slog.  So I'll pick the upset there and go Clay. Norris wins his, Simmons knocks off the relegated Right Reverend, and Wassermann wins hers.

GAMMA DIVISION: Two of these matchups feature Season Eight sweeps, so that helps me decide a little easier.  Blackfield moves to 15 straight wins, Diamond and Nakamatsu go to 3-0 against their opponents, and Rose surprises most and wins a technical masterclass.

DELTA DIVISION: There's little history to work from here. So I'm picking Silver, Priest, Dhillon, and Abernathy.

THE LEAGUE: SEASON NINE, WEEK ONE

DELTA DIVISION

8CXZgHS.jpg (7) Lord Robert Abernathy (0-0, OVR 400)

vs.

(8) Devil's Delight (0-0, OVR 400) 54miFm6.jpgxJrKs53.jpg

Not the best of introductions to The League’s audience for these two. That largely falls on Delight, who struggled to get any offense going. The Delta Division’s revamped rule set helped Abernathy here, as he put Delight away in an absolute sprint that you’d have been hard pressed to see last season.

Lord Robert Abernathy (1-0) def. Devil's Delight (0-1) via Pinfall (Shatterfall) in 7:29.  Rating: *

Changes for Lord Robert Abernathy:  OVR + 2.70, XP + 443.29, no notable damage

Changes for Devil's Delight:  OVR -0.82, XP + 110.82, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

4ZAKk1I.jpg (5) Kichi Hida (0-0, OVR 400)

vs.

(3) Monty Dhillon (0-0, OVR 442) vz0qqDp.jpg

This was a slugfest, no two ways about it.  Hida’s offense is nothing but strikes, and she made sure to work on chopping Dhillon’s frame down to the mat.  Monty gave back as good as he got, though, and this looked like it would be a hard-hitting eleven-minute affair to warm the crowd up well for the remaining matches on the card.  But Hida decided instead to surprise Dhillon with an elbow shot, and caught Dhillon flush enough on the temple that he stayed down for the three.  A minor upset here, as Kichi Hida proves she’s come to wreak havoc in an early Match of the Night contender that ran just over six minutes!

Kichi Hida (1-0) def. Monty Dhillon (0-1) via Pinfall (spinning elbow blow) in 6:09.  Rating: ***

Changes for Kichi Hida:  OVR + 4.85, XP + 523.20, no notable damage

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR + 0.67, XP + 130.80, no notable damage

DELTA DIVISION

wtKjCIc.jpg (6) Lucas Molina (0-0, OVR 400)

vs.

(2) Christian Priest (0-0, OVR 450) NldKaI4.jpgAOP9il0.jpg

Now to the other end of the spectrum, and a technical savant in Molina facing the much larger Priest. Where the previous match was a sprint, this was a match that most League viewers would be more comfortable with regarding the pace, as it ran just under fourteen minutes and was another Match of the Night contender.  Priest’s last major bit of offense was attempting an Iconoclasm, but failing to connect.  From there it was all Molina, who used his arsenal of holds and various limb locks to eventually sink in his submission finisher, and Priest had no choice but to tap.  A different style of match, but still largely entertaining and possible signs of what we could still see out of the Delta Division this season.

Lucas Molina (1-0) def. Christian Priest (0-1) via Submission (Molina Bodylock) in 13:50.  Rating: ***

Changes for Lucas Molina:  OVR + 5.41, XP + 527.19, no notable damage

Changes for Christian Priest:  OVR + 0.75, XP + 131.80, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

V1I70uc.jpg (1) Jimmy Anarchy (0-0, OVR 427)

vs.

(4) Sterling Silver (0-0, OVR 433) va4qjuU.jpg

Last match in the Delta Division for the evening, and this one features the former Gamma Division competitor, Jimmy Anarchy.  Very few gave him a chance to succeed in the lowest division given how he fared in Gamma.  To both competitors’ credit, neither backed down in this contest, which kept the attention of the audience throughout.  About nine minutes in, Anarchy looked like he may have gotten away with one, as he dropped Silver with Any Means Necessary and avoided the ref’s gaze in doing so, but Silver got a shoulder up at 2.9.  A few more attempts at the Final Step went in vain, Silver fought back, and eventually hit her 450 splash to pick up the victory in a match that may honestly have been rated lower than it deserved.

Sterling Silver (1-0) def. Jimmy Anarchy (0-1) via Pinfall (On Wings of Silver) in 11:48.  Rating: ***

Changes for Sterling Silver:  OVR + 5.27, XP + 526.14, moderate damage to head

Changes for Jimmy Anarchy:  OVR + 0.73, XP + 131.53, moderate damage to head, minor damage to body

GAMMA DIVISION

2X2r9qf.jpg (1) Indigo Rose (0-0, OVR 428)

vs.

(4) Diego Rodriguez (0-0, OVR 434) 9wxABJw.jpg

League fans hoping for a technical masterclass between two experienced grapplers would walk away from this match disappointed.  It was over barely before it began, and it didn’t even end with a submission. Rodriguez stunned Rose with a full nelson legsweep, and she must have hit her head hard as she didn’t even stir during the pin attempt.  Off-camera, she would be removed from the ring under her own power after about three minutes of medics looking her over.

Diego Rodriguez (1-0) def. Indigo Rose (0-1) via Pinfall (full nelson legasweep) in 6:48.  Rating: *

Changes for Diego Rodriguez:  OVR + 2.67, XP + 509.44, no notable damage

Changes for Indigo Rose:  OVR -0.81, XP + 127.36, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

ZCYwviV.jpg (5) Angela Wassermann (0-0, OVR 424)

vs.

(3) Jean-Paul Ouilette (0-0, OVR 439) ZThYhej.jpgAAdEYyr.jpg

Bob Sinclair: Viewers of the League last season should be familiar with this set up, as Beta Division bouts run similar to every match run in The League last season.

Frankie Garnett: I dunno, Bob. Some of those Delta matches were good because they were so short. Means I can get to my drinking earlier!

Bob Sinclair: …moving on from that comment, up next is a matchup that was evenly split last season, as Angela Wassermann and Jean-Paul Ouilette square off.

Frankie Garnett: Bob, I have a question. Cecile is supposed to bee Ouilette’s “dame du jour,” right?

Bob Sinclair: I’m not sure what this has to do with anything, but yes.

Frankie Garnett: And “du jour” is essentially “of the day,” right?

Bob Sinclair: Is there a point to this, Frankie?

Frankie Garnett: Yeah. If she’s supposed to be his squeeze of the day, why is she still here five months later?

Bob Sinclair: I suggest you ask Ouilette that yourself, Frankie. Anyway, here’s the bell and this one is underway!

Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-0) def. Angela Wassermann (0-1) via Pinfall (Le Petit Mort) in 17:31.  Rating: ****

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR + 6.98, XP + 870.75, minor damage to head

Changes for Angela Wassermann:  OVR + 1.65, XP + 315.19, moderate damage to head

This was the Match of the Night (1 [1 this season] for Jean-Paul Ouilette, 1 [1 this season] for Angela Wassermann)

GAMMA DIVISION

limej5G.jpgxd5Rq8a.jpg (6) Erick Gibson (0-0, OVR 429)

vs.

(2) Yoshii Nakamatsu (0-0, OVR 439) giFlbJV.jpg

A rather pedestrian matchup, which to be fair was the most likely result after the Match of the Night and early contender for Match of the Season.  Gibson started with the early advantage, but he tired quickly—being a boss means never doing the hard work, after all, and it’s starting to show on him here. Nakamatsu would capitalize on this and notch his first victory of the season a few minutes later.

Yoshii Nakamatsu (1-0) def. Erick Gibson (0-1) via Pinfall (Emperor’s Fall) in 11:31.  Rating: **

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR + 4.05, XP + 558.36, no notable damage

Changes for Erick Gibson:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.59, minor damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

zTBxNBX.jpg (5) Jun Onoo (0-0, OVR 434)

vs.

(3) Diamond (0-0, OVR 435) 0rDaDU8.jpg

This one wasn’t even close. Onoo seemed lifeless for the majority and only got limited offense in. Diamond was never in any danger and won after finally managing to connect with her cutter finish, starting her second campaign off on the right foot.

Diamond (1-0) def. Jun Onoo (0-1) via Pinfall (24 Karat Kiss) in 11:12.  Rating: *

Changes for Diamond:  OVR + 2.85, XP + 511.67, no notable damage

Changes for Jun Onoo:  OVR -0.87, XP + 127.92, moderate damage to head

BETA DIVISION TABLES MATCH

IgD64Oj.jpg (1) Reverend Johnny Gross (0-0, OVR 427)

vs.

(4) Daniel Simmons (0-0, OVR 440) ha8RmaF.jpg

Reverend Gross’ first match out of the Alpha Division was one he’d like to have a second chance at.  While he got more offense in than Onoo did last match, it wasn’t nearly enough and Simmons won with a DDT through a table propped up in the corner after several stump piledriver attempts went for naught.

Daniel Simmons (1-0) def. Reverend Johnny Gross (0-1) via Table Break (DDT) in 10:44.  Rating: **

Changes for Daniel Simmons:  OVR + 4.01, XP + 630.70, no notable damage

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.67, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

VfA2MW8.jpg (6) Pulsar (0-0, OVR 429)

vs.

(2) Nuclear Templeton (0-0, OVR 439) FqeSGy6.jpg

In any other division, this might have come off as a more closely contested bout.  In the revamped Alpha Division, though, this was as close to a squash as one could get without it actually being a squash.  Nuclear went bell-to-bell here, never letting fof the gas and showing off one of his new moves, a Tactical Nuke, right before turning it into his submission finisher to get the win.

Nuclear Templeton (1-0) def. Pulsar (0-1) via Submission (Radiation Leak) in 9:39.  Rating: **

Changes for Nuclear Templeton:  OVR + 3.95, XP + 726.95, no notable damage

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR -0.07, XP + 181.74, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

ginc2gw.jpg (6) Terrance Stevens (0-0, OVR 432)

vs.

(2) Billy Norris (0-0, OVR 440) ayWv1C3.jpg

A little more competitive than the previous match, though not by much as Norris batters Stevens from corner to corner in this one.  His one bright spot was a sustained offense after being busted open and going haywire, but even that wouldn’t prove good enough against last season’s Beta Division runner-up, who starts Season 9 with a massive chip off his shoulders this early.

Billy Norris (1-0) def. Terrance Stevens (0-1) via Pinfall (Down Under Disaster) in 11:03.  Rating: **

Changes for Billy Norris:  OVR + 4.03, XP + 630.90, no notable damage

Changes for Terrance Stevens:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.72, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

p54rf5F.jpg (7) De'siree Mitchell (0-0, OVR 424)

vs.

(8) Mel O'Hallister (0-0, OVR 445) e8cytyP.jpg

Match of the Night contender here, and for good reason.  Fairly even through the first nine minutes, O’Hallister started to gain more of an advantage and for a bit it looked like he might be the first person to win in a new division. A Dream of the Emerald Isle seemed to cement that fact, except that he hit it too close to the ropes, and Mitchell got a foot on them just before three, and in plain view of the ref so there was no shenanigans about it.  It seemed to take some of the fire out of O’Hallister, and Mitchell fought back, connecting a few minutes later with an All Out Blitz, and this was good enough to hit for three. A game effort by O’Hallister, who despite the loss showed that he came ready to fight in the top division this season.

De'siree Mitchell (1-0) def. Mel O'Hallister (0-1) via Pinfall (All Out Blitz) in 17:56.  Rating: ***

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR + 5.72, XP + 793.99, moderate damage to head

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR + 0.79, XP + 198.50, moderate damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

 iLs7NYn.jpg (5) The Mastodon (0-0, OVR 432)

vs.

(3) Big Scott Weathers (0-0, OVR 440) OOiJTFx.jpg

This could have been Match of the Night if not for some questionable decisions by the two wrestlers.  This match could have ended just fifteen minutes in, when Weathers hit a Blackout, but elected to not go for the cover seeing that Mastodon had been busted open and was not doing an adrenaline rush.  Weathers controlled the next few minutes, hitting a second Blackout and this time triggering Mastodon’s adrenaline.  The larger man would fight back, hitting a Cull the Weak and a spinning elbow that both only netted two.  Weathers held on enough to get another attack in, and a sudden implant DDT would be enough to do it, as Mastodon simply could not get a shoulder up in time.  Weathers wins one that went far longer than it should have.

Big Scott Weathers (1-0) def. The Mastodon (0-1) via Pinfall (implant DDT) in 24:50.  Rating: ***

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR + 6.22, XP + 799.37, moderate damage to head, minor damage to body

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR + 0.86, XP + 199.84, major damage to head, minor damage to body

BETA DIVISION SUBMISSION MATCH

N0Y594C.jpg (7) Markus Clay (0-0, OVR 426)

vs.

(8) Blood River (0-0, OVR 449) T127n44.jpgdTs8j7q.jpg

Not the sort of match River wanted to debut in the Beta Division in, given he isn’t schooled in submission holds. Then again, neither is Clay but that didn’t stop him from applying a clumsy ankle lock to no effect. His second try, an ugly camel clutch, worked well enough as River tapped almost immediately and immediately put a hand to his back as soon as Clay let go of the hold.  Was it a masterclass? Not in the slightest. But it’s still a victory for Clay to start Season Nine.

Markus Clay (1-0) def. Blood River (0-1) via Submission (force submission) in 11:01.  Rating: **

Changes for Markus Clay:  OVR + 4.02, XP + 630.87, minor damage to head

Changes for Blood River:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.72, no notable damage

ALPHA DIVISION

TxXkh5U.jpg (1) Brandy McDonald (0-0, OVR 448)

vs.

(4) George Mastachas (0-0, OVR 430) hlph25Q.jpg

Brandy’s first appearance in Season Nine as the defending League champion started decently enough. But it was Mastachas who adapted faster to the new Alpha Division rules, managing to hit a Wrath of Zeus about 14 minutes in. That didn’t put the champ away, who got out at 2.8.  Mastachas continued the pressure, barely letting McDonald get any offense strung together, and in the end it was an explosion suplex, a move he’d failed to hit on at least five prior occasions, that netted him the pinfall victory in the semi-main of the night.

George Mastachas (1-0) def. Brandy McDonald (0-1) via Pinfall (explosion suplex) in 19:02.  Rating: **

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR + 4.48, XP + 733.70, no notable damage

Changes for Brandy McDonald:  OVR -0.08, XP + 183.43, moderate damage to head, minor damage to body

GAMMA DIVISION

LTFF6jR.jpg (7) El Tornado (0-0, OVR 426)

vs.

(8) Brian Blackfield (0-0, OVR 471) RdUenQh.jpg

If anyone was going to break the curse of the new division members losing their debut, surely it had to be the guy who went a perfect 14-0 in the Delta Division, right? Tornado certainly thought otherwise, as he drew blood with a knee drop fairly early on.  He didn’t get much of a chance to work on worsening the laceration, as Blackfield turned up the aggression and forced Tornado to avoid the Scotland Destroyer.  But Tornado was so caught up in avoiding that piledriver that he fell victim to a new wrinkle in Blackfield’s arsenal—a cobra clutch dubbed the Highland’s Wrath.  Blackfield had it in deep, and Tornado simply faded into unconsciousness.  The streak moves to 15, and Brian Blackfield is the first to notch a win in their new division after competing in a different division the season before!

Brian Blackfield (1-0) def. El Tornado (0-1) via Submission (Highland’s Wrath) in 11:54.  Rating: **

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 4.07, XP + 558.57, no notable damage

Changes for El Tornado:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.64, moderate damage to head, minor damage to body

Honestly I'm kind of in slack jawed awe. Kichi Hida got incredibly lucky in my view. Lucas Molina...less so, but still. I did not expect either of them to win. The match times, I figured as much. Kichi vs another striker is always a sprint and no submission specialist ever has a fast match without being squished. I also didn't expect me simply picking whoever had the highest OVR to, well, work. Especially the ones who are pretty close together. But what the hell, let's keep it going.

More in character, Miss Hida (if I have this translated right), promises more pain. Monty Dhillon was just the opening night for the Carnival of Violence. Lord Robert Abernathy had better bring his best violence, or the Carnival's Ringmaster will be disappointed. What happened to Mr. Dhillon is what happens when Miss Hida is pleased. Imagine what happens when she's displeased.

Lucas appreciates Christian Priest as a competitor, and sends him much respect. But he wasn't on Lucas's level, and Jimmy Anarchy isn't, either. He'll see you in the ring, Jimmy.

THE LEAGUE: SEASON NINE, WEEK TWO

DELTA DIVISION

8CXZgHS.jpg (2) Lord Robert Abernathy (1-0, OVR 403)

vs.

(1) Kichi Hida (1-0, OVR 405) 4ZAKk1I.jpg

For most of the opening eight minutes of this match, Hida looked like she was overmatched by the long0time veteran of the British indie scene.  When she shifted out of a Shatterfall, though, it seemed like she found a hidden gear she didn’t have. As Abernathy wore himself out, Hida seemed to pick up steam. A Funhouse Stomp shifted the match completely in her favor, and despite one last gasp of offense from Abernathy, it was in vain as Hida would hit Eternal Violence on His Lordship to move to 2-0 on the young season.

Kichi Hida (2-0) def. Lord Robert Abernathy (1-1) via Pinfall (Eternal Violence) in 12:47.  Rating: ***

Changes for Kichi Hida:  OVR + 5.34, XP + 526.65, minor damage to head

Changes for Lord Robert Abernathy:  OVR + 0.74, XP + 131.66, moderate damage to head

DELTA DIVISION LAST ONE STANDING MATCH

V1I70uc.jpg (5) Jimmy Anarchy (0-1, OVR 427)

vs.

(4) Lucas Molina (1-0, OVR 405) wtKjCIc.jpg

This match had to be run twice.  The first time, Molina won in something like 16 minutes, after multiple hesitations to apply his submission finisher.  Then my computer hard-crashed thanks to Word and Excel—no, I don’t know how either—and this had to be redone. The second time around, Molina wasted no time in going for the submission finish, and inflicted enough pain to keep Anarchy down for the count in just under 7 minutes to win one of the fastest Last One Standing matches you’ll ever see.

Lucas Molina (2-0) def. Jimmy Anarchy (0-2) via Last One Standing (Molina Bodylock) in 6:46.  Rating: **

Changes for Lucas Molina:  OVR + 3.78, XP + 483.25, no notable damage

Changes for Jimmy Anarchy:  OVR -0.07, XP + 120.81, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

xJrKs53.jpg54miFm6.jpg (8) Devil's Delight (0-1, OVR 399)

vs.

(3) Sterling Silver (1-0, OVR 439) va4qjuU.jpg

Silver cruised in the early parts of this match, taking some offense here and there in order to set up more damaging shots to her opponent. Her attempt at On Wings of Silver was thwarted by Delight shaking the ropes to throw off Silver’s balance, and this opened the door for Delight to attempt a comeback. Kicking out of a springboard splash was the last bit of confidence Delight needed, and two minutes later she managed to surprise Silver with her sister’s patented submission finisher.  Silver couldn’t get to the ropes and had to tap, and no one looked more surprised than Devil’s Delight herself when she was announced the winner of the match.

Devil's Delight (1-1) def. Sterling Silver (1-1) via Submission (Purgatory’s End) in 8:29.  Rating: **

Changes for Devil's Delight:  OVR + 3.88, XP + 484.07, no notable damage

Changes for Sterling Silver:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.02, no notable damage

GAMMA DIVISION

2X2r9qf.jpg (7) Indigo Rose (0-1, OVR 427)

vs.

(5) Erick Gibson (0-1, OVR 428) xd5Rq8a.jpglimej5G.jpg

Rose must have been feeling some aftereffects from last week, as she got in a total of four offensive maneuvers for the entire match.  Gibson won this one without working up a sweat, and for Indigo Rose, it has to be wondered if she’ll even be physically cleared to compete next week.

Erick Gibson (1-1) def. Indigo Rose (0-2) via Pinfall (Terminable Offense) in 5:59.  Rating: *

Changes for Erick Gibson:  OVR + 2.64, XP + 509.03, no notable damage

Changes for Indigo Rose:  OVR -0.80, XP + 127.26, moderate damage to head

BETA DIVISION

IgD64Oj.jpg (6) Reverend Johnny Gross (0-1, OVR 427)

vs.

(6) Terrance Stevens (0-1, OVR 431) ginc2gw.jpg

By all rights, Gross should have had this won thirteen minutes in. He had his submission finisher applied dead center of the ring, has Stevens dead to rights, but Stevens somehow managed to slip out of the hold mere moments before passing out. (Gameplay note: he rolled a 999 when anything under 983 would have lost him the match.) Stevens fought back from there, wearing Gross down but never quite getting the momentum to attempt his superkick. The fight spilled outside twice, both at Stevens’ whim, and the second time nearly cost Terrance as Gross hit a low blow outside and almost won via countout. However, a second successful application of the dragon sleeper would finally give Gross the win in this Match of the Night contender.

Reverend Johnny Gross (1-1) def. Terrance Stevens (0-2) via Submission (Come to Jesus) in 17:41.  Rating: ***

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR + 5.70, XP + 687.95, minor damage to head

Changes for Terrance Stevens:  OVR + 0.79, XP + 171.99, moderate damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION TABLES MATCH

LTFF6jR.jpg (5) El Tornado (0-1, OVR 426)

vs.

(7) Jun Onoo (0-1, OVR 434) zTBxNBX.jpg

While this was a competitive bout, it wasn’t every exciting and Onoo wasn’t in danger at all.  It took two tables (because the first table fell apart when trying to set it up) for Onoo to connect with a stump piledriver through it, and the big man picks up the win in an otherwise unremarkable match.

Jun Onoo (1-1) def. El Tornado (0-2) via Table Break (stump piledriver) in 7:25.  Rating: **

Changes for Jun Onoo:  OVR + 3.82, XP + 556.09, no notable damage

Changes for El Tornado:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.02, no notable damage

BETA DIVISION

N0Y594C.jpg (2) Markus Clay (1-0, OVR 430)

vs.

(5) Angela Wassermann (0-1, OVR 426) ZCYwviV.jpg

Match of the Night contender here, and it deserved the nomination.  Wassermann had an early advantage that she squandered away when Clay nearly won off a springboard moonsault. A follow-up attempt at the Johannesburg Express went in vain as Angela countered it. A minute later, a huge momentum shift happened as Clay countered a charging basement dropkcik with a small package for two, but she could not capitalize on the momentum swing immediately.  It took a few more minutes for Wassermann to fight back, and while her cross arm breaker was no good, the stump puller was yet again, and a move that people should really have scouted by now pays off for her again as she notches her first win of the season.

Angela Wassermann (1-1) def. Markus Clay (1-1) via Submission (stump puller) in 14:21.  Rating: ***

Changes for Angela Wassermann:  OVR + 5.45, XP + 685.70, moderate damage to head

Changes for Markus Clay:  OVR + 0.76, XP + 171.43, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

p54rf5F.jpg (2) De'siree Mitchell (1-0, OVR 429)

vs.

(5) The Mastodon (0-1, OVR 433) iLs7NYn.jpg

Bob Sinclair: We’re midway through our card this evening, and it’s now time for our first match in the Alpha Division tonight.  De’siree Mitchell, who struggled to avoid relegation last season, faces off against The Mastodon. These two split the Season Eight clashes between them, who gets the initial edge in Season Nine, Frankie?

Frankie Garnett: Mastodon, easy. If you don’t have size, or speed, you’re doomed to failure. Mitchell may have it against other women wrestlers but against someone of Mastodon’s size? No chance.

Bob Sinclair: And yet she holds a victory over him last season, Frankie.

Frankie Garnett: I’m not here to talk old history, Bob. I’m here for action, so let’s get to it!

Bob Sinclair: These two feel the same way, as there is the bell and we’re underway!

Frankie Garnett: It makes me wonder, Bob.  Mastodon and Blackfield are the only two who have adrenaline rushes.  So why didn’t Mastodon have a better record last season if Blackfield went undefeated?

Bob Sinclair: That’s something to talk about during the commercial break, Frankie. Folks, we’ll be right back after we pay a bill or two, don’t go anywhere as more Alpha Division action is up next!

The Mastodon (1-1) def. De'siree Mitchell (1-1) via Pinfall (Rampage) in 21:32.  Rating: ***

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR + 5.98, XP + 946.80, moderate damage to head

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR + 0.83, XP + 349.20, moderate damage to head, minor damage to body

This was the Match of the Night (3 [1 this season] for The Mastodon, 1 [1 this season] for De'siree Mitchell)

ALPHA DIVISION

TxXkh5U.jpg (7) Brandy McDonald (0-1, OVR 448)

vs.

(7) Pulsar (0-1, OVR 429) VfA2MW8.jpg

McDonald came into this match with a chip on her shoulder.  The title defense didn’t start the way she wanted it to, and Pulsar paid for it this week.  Sure, the luchador got a fair bit of offense in so it wasn’t a squash, but the result of this one was never really in question. McDonald storms to her first win of the season in convincing fashion to remind everyone that she’s still the champ until someone proves they’re better than she is over the course of fourteen weeks.

Brandy McDonald (1-1) def. Pulsar (0-2) via Pinfall (Brandy With a Twist) in 11:34.  Rating: **

Changes for Brandy McDonald:  OVR + 4.06, XP + 728.33, no notable damage

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR -0.07, XP + 182.08, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

e8cytyP.jpg (5) Mel O'Hallister (0-1, OVR 446)

vs.

(3) George Mastachas (1-0, OVR 434) hlph25Q.jpg

Staying in the top division with another Match of the Night contender, this is another that could have gone either way.  The key difference in this one is that O’Hallister simply could not get himself behind Mastachas when the larger man was stunned to attempt the Dream of the Emerald Isle. Mastachas had no such issues by hitting Olympus Rises twice before delivering a Wrath of Zeus on his notably smaller opponent to score the pin in a very competitive matchup.

George Mastachas (2-0) def. Mel O'Hallister (0-2) via Pinfall (Wrath of Zeus) in 18:09.  Rating: ***

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR + 5.73, XP + 794.16, minor damage to head

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR + 0.79, XP + 198.54, no notable damage

GAMMA DIVISION

giFlbJV.jpg (3) Yoshii Nakamatsu (1-0, OVR 443)

vs.

(2) Diamond (1-0, OVR 438) 0rDaDU8.jpg

Nakamatsu swept the season series last time against Diamond, and came into this match confident the sweep would continue.  To her credit, Diamond did get Nakamatsu worn down some, but Nakamatsu seemed to have her number yet again.  An Emperor’s Fall moves Nakamatsu to 2-0 this season, and 3-0 in League competition against the First Lady of The League. Diamond’s going to need to rethink her strategy come the rematch in the second half of the season.

Yoshii Nakamatsu (2-0) def. Diamond (1-1) via Pinfall (Emperor’s Fall) in 10:11.  Rating: **

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR + 3.98, XP + 557.62, no notable damage

Changes for Diamond:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.41, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

AOP9il0.jpgNldKaI4.jpg (5) Christian Priest (0-1, OVR 451)

vs.

(5) Monty Dhillon (0-1, OVR 443) vz0qqDp.jpg

Only a few more seconds and this would have been the longest Delta Division match of the night. As it stood, the third meeting between these two was a close affair, with not a single finisher even attempted despite both men having the means and the ability to do so.  Instead, it was a sudden shock to the system, in the form of the second Livewire Lariat of the match, that led Dhillon to score a controversial three count as Priest seemed to kick out right at three. A frame-by-frame replay would show that the shoulder came up about eight-hundredths of a second after the three-count landed. The call would prove to be correct in the end, much to Priest’s chagrin, and Dhillon finally gets off the losing streak with a match that could have gone either way!

Monty Dhillon (1-1) def. Christian Priest (0-2) via Pinfall (Livewire Lariat) in 12:20.  Rating: ***

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR + 5.30, XP + 526.41, no notable damage

Changes for Christian Priest:  OVR + 0.74, XP + 131.60, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

dTs8j7q.jpgT127n44.jpg (6) Blood River (0-1, OVR 449)

vs.

(1) Daniel Simmons (1-0, OVR 444) ha8RmaF.jpg

River actually had the advantage for a fair portion of the match. But he simply wasn’t able to translate that into any success, as never managed a sufficient string of offense to get Simmons into position for any of his trademarks.  Simmons needed none of that until the end, when he busted out the Blue Collar Driver to put River down and deny him his first Beta Division win.  River has gotten close, but just hasn’t found that combination to net the win. It’s only a matter of time, it seems, until he finds that form that won him the Gamma Division.

Daniel Simmons (2-0) def. Blood River (0-2) via Pinfall (Blue Collar Driver) in 12:40.  Rating: **

Changes for Daniel Simmons:  OVR + 4.12, XP + 631.90, no notable damage

Changes for Blood River:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.98, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION TABLES MATCH

ayWv1C3.jpg (3) Billy Norris (1-0, OVR 444)

vs.

(4) Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-0, OVR 446) ZThYhej.jpgAAdEYyr.jpg

Ouilette wasted little time in taking the fight to Norris. There seemed to be less showboating from Ouilette as he methodically wore down Norris over the course of nine minutes before deciding it was time to introduce a table to the match.  Hopping back in over the top rope, Ouilette thwarted a series of rights by Norris before dropping Norris onto the otherwise untouched table with a DDT.  The impact managed to split the table in half and lacerate Norris, and the referee determined that yes, while the table was not opened or even set up, it was still broken by putting Norris’ head through it and splitting it in half. Ouilette wins in a sudden manner, surprising many with the business-like manner he came into his match after being in the match of the night last week.

Jean-Paul Ouilette (2-0) def. Billy Norris (1-1) via Table Break (DDT) in 10:15.  Rating: **

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR + 3.98, XP + 630.40, no notable damage

Changes for Billy Norris:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.60, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

FqeSGy6.jpg (1) Nuclear Templeton (1-0, OVR 443)

vs.

(4) Big Scott Weathers (1-0, OVR 446) OOiJTFx.jpg

In a far better start than the previous season, Nuclear came out this week with something to prove.  Never really in danger of any of Weathers’ trademark moves, Nuclear chained a Radiation Spike into a Power Surge, failed to land the Armageddon Lariat, took control back and hit a second Radiation Spike, and then locked in the Radiation Leak for the submission victory as a battered Weathers had no choice but to simply tap out. A ruthless display by Templeton, and there are whispers among some pundits that this may finally be his season to win it all. There’s just the small matter of another twelve weeks to go through first.

Nuclear Templeton (2-0) def. Big Scott Weathers (1-1) via Submission (Radiation Leak) in 17:12.  Rating: **

Changes for Nuclear Templeton:  OVR + 4.37, XP + 732.38, no notable damage

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR -0.08, XP + 183.10, moderate damage to head, minor damage to body

GAMMA DIVISION

RdUenQh.jpg (4) Brian Blackfield (1-0, OVR 475)

vs.

(1) Diego Rodriguez (1-0, OVR 437) 9wxABJw.jpg

Main event, and unseen to either man the entire locker room was watching this one. The Gamma Division in particular were paying close attention to try to find a weakness in the heretofore invincible Blackfield, the Delta Division hoping that he finally gets knocked down a peg, and the other two divisions looking in case his meteoric rise continued.  Rodriguez seemed a perfect foil for Blackfield—no impact finishers, just a pair of submissions, no adrenaline rushes from that.  Rodriguez wouldn’t get a chance to test that theory as Blackfield forewent his Scotland Destroyer finisher to instead beat Rodrigues with a Tartan Effect. The streak moves to 16, and now the pressure is on the winless Indigo Rose, perhaps the other foil to Blackfield, to end the streak next week.

Brian Blackfield (2-0) def. Diego Rodriguez (1-1) via Pinfall (Tartan Effect) in 15:13.  Rating: **

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 4.26, XP + 560.40, no notable damage

Changes for Diego Rodriguez:  OVR -0.08, XP + 140.10, minor damage to head

The wins are less shocking this time. Abernathy is still a bit surprising, but Kichi's always had a knack for hanging around in matches. The League got to see her slam her knee brace into someone's face as hard as she can for the first time. Jimmy Anarchy on the other hand, well...his losing record from last season ought to speak for itself. No further comments from me on that. On to the promo section!

I think I'm getting the hang of translating Miss Hida's brand of partially incoherent Japanese. Paradoxically, she thanks Lord Abernathy for showing her his best violence. The Ringmaster was well pleased. She is only sorry she did not break his nose with her knee in return. And now, she says, the challenge is one Sterling Silver. Can she bring high quality violence? Or will the Carnival of Violence have it's first disappointment since its arrival in the League?

Meanwhile, Lucas Molina says he was right about Jimmy Anarchy. The man wasn't in Molina's league. Word choice intentional. Monty Dhillon, however, now has a chance to prove he is. Considering the two Lucas has faced thus far...he has his doubts. He'll see you in the ring, Monty.
