I took the advice I received here and jumped from #36 in the world in 2008 to #1 in the world in 2009. Essentially, I focused on pushing my match ratings up, even if it meant risking losing the match. I lost my BHOTWG World Title, won it back, lost it, and won it back a third time. In 2008, I managed only 7 matches of 48 that rated "B" or higher (and just 2 B+ matches). In 2009, 30 of my 48 matches were rated at least a "B", including 7 B+ matches and my first ever A. Only 7 matches rated below B-. I am no longer JBL-like. Even my monkeys are happier.

My first pointer is this: During the match, you can press the "I" button in the upper-left hand corner and check your match rating. I generally don't go for the pin unless I have achieved at least a B-. Frankly, the best in-match advice I can give is this: carry your opponent until your match rating is decent. If they are really tough (Kikkawa), go for a few pins to force them to give up their Spirit, but don't overdo it. I will use my main finisher, and then follow up with a high-frequency, low-success submission finisher instead of going for the pin. It forces them to give up their Spirit, but rarely fniishes the match before I am ready. I am losing more matches this way, but the higher match ratings make up for it. If you are still early in your career, I would just go for the win and don't worry too much about match rating. It's too hard to win early in your career. When you have built up a lot of Spirit and Energy, start carrying guys more often, and always check your match rating during the match. You will notice that "High" and "Finisher" moves will bump the rating up slowly but surely.
