The hero of this journey

Remmy Skye had always been somewhat of a free spirit. As a kid growing up in the backwaters of Georgia he had always felt different and, even if he hadn’t, the local rednecks hadn’t ever been shy about telling him anyway. Just out of high school he had drifted across the country to Los Angeles, following the dreams and the footsteps of millions of kids before him. He’d painted a little, sang with a band called GodHatesGuns for a handful of gigs, had surfed every moment he could and then, somehow, found himself in a pro wrestling ring. ‘Psyche Out’ Remmy Skye had taken to pro wrestling with a startling ease, marrying a fearless, flashy, high flying style with an oddly hypnotic charisma. The very character traits that had led to a succession of fights and derision growing up got him over fast in the battleground that was the Californian wrestling scene and so it was that he’d found himself in a CZCW ring for the first time one month before his 20th birthday.

The place where he made his name

The decade that followed had been a rollercoaster ride. Coastal Zone Xtreme Champion. Coastal Zone Tag Team Champion with Frankie Perez (the recently crowned Independent Wrestler of the Year for 2019). A two time Coastal Zone Champion. Heady days when it seemed almost inevitable that he’d get his chance at the big time. Bunnie had come and gone in that time too but life had been moving so fast that it felt like it was years later before he even realised she wasn’t there. It had all been a blur. In March of 2014 he dropped the Coastal Zone Championship to Masked Cougar. In November of that year he was gone.

The forgotten friend and the lost love

Yeah, he’d missed a few shows, he’d never denied that and he knew there were no excuses. The whispers were that he had a drug problem. The reality was that, while he’d gotten stoned sometimes, drugs were not the catalyst for his rather spacey attitude, it was just who he was. The reality was… well the truth of it was that nobody else really knew what had happened and it just seemed easier to let people believe he was wasted than for them to know the truth. If they wanted to believe that he’d missed Showdown at Sundown 2014 because he was off his face so be it. The cold reality was that Remmy had spent most of 2014 (and a couple of years after even) flirting with suicide more enthusiastically than he’d been comfortable with for reasons he had never quite been able to figure out. The night in question he’d spent writing notes to the handful of people he figured he owed something to - his mother, his sister, Bunnie, all the women who he’d caused to shed too many tears over the years. When he’d gone to the remote beach he’d chosen to end it all; he'd been grimly aghast to discover a bunch of teenagers having a party there. Inevitably one of them recognised him and he’d joined in. He was 30 years old and would never set foot in a CZCW ring again.

The following year he’d somehow managed to keep the show on the road, a series of brilliant performances up and down the west coast for various small groups seeing him scoop Independent Wrestler of the Year 2015. Surely his upwards trajectory would begin anew. This would prove to be a doomed hope. Remmy shrugged it off outwardly, kept on surfing, kept on painting, kept on living to the beat of his own drum but there was a small part of him, deep down inside that was hurt by the periphery that he had been forced to compete on, the wrestling purgatory of minuscule crowds in ramshackle buildings where he still gave his all every time. He smiled languidly every time some fan expressed disbelief that he wasn’t in the big time or when a father told his son that “this guy was one of the best in the world once!”. Remmy was still only 35 and not so whimsical that he’d expected USPW to be leaving messages on his phone over the last half decade or so but he’d considered that CZCW could have considered adequate penance paid by now. IPW or GSW could easily have called him at some point over the years. He’d made his peace with things mostly. He still loved getting in the ring, regardless of where it was and how few people were there. In some ways the reduced schedule had its advantages - he had plenty of time for the sea and for the paint. It wasn’t a bad life and, as today’s trip had proven, it still had the potential to surprise...

Thank you! It's been too long since I've really gotten into a dynasty here but I have a lot of excitement myself about where this could lead for Remmy, for OLLIE, for me and for any readers we pick up along the way.

The hero of this journey

“So, what do you think?” the voice, heavily accented, asked him. Remmy said nothing for a moment, watching the group training across a pair of rings in front of them, then replying,

“Why me? I mean, I’m not complaining but I wasn’t expecting this.”

The other man considered his response this time, inscrutable before offering,

“We need something new, something different, something unique. You are certainly unique Remmy!”

There was no arguing with that. Both men looked again at the drills being performed, as ever the sounds of wrestling set something afire in Remmy and suddenly he felt a hunger to snatch this opportunity. The sounds of a body hitting the ropes, the thud of feet on the ring, the noises of exertion, sounds of people striving to prove themselves, to live up to something, to be a part of something. There was a music to it, there was more melody in a great wrestling match than in the sincere but generic efforts at punk rock that Remmy had tasted all those years ago. Everyone had a voice, had a story to tell. It was in the telling.

“I’m onboard. Count me in!”

“Excellent, excellent news. This is a chance for all of us.”

The other man sighed and indicated at the dusty gym around them both, observing sadly,

“We have fallen a long way.”

The New Boss

Remmy Skye and Phoenix I looked at each other and then at the banner across the back of the hall.

OLLIE.

The new project

The oldest active wrestling promotion in the world - their first show in 1955 - and, at one point, one of the biggest companies in the business, time has not been kind to OLLIE, who have languished badly in recent years and are currently listing badly like a leaky boat without even a presence on TV. Turning them around, in an environment where many of the wrestling media are already drafting their obituary, will be a hell of a challenge. On the face of it… a potentially insurmountable one, Remmy is a gringo who doesn’t speak the language and who has been effectively off the map for over half a decade now. It could make or break not just Remmy himself but the 65 year old institution. “Reach up and touch the skye!” has been part of his schtick for years - now we’ll see if he can walk the walk... or, I guess, fly the fly?

The early days of the Remmy Skye era in OLLIE saw the following actions taken:

OLLIE.jpg.534c7b4bc806e85e415e07b8e320f37d.jpgLaRedDeLaLucha.jpg.3d7fae8b63247af07d41b2be7ce5a98b.jpg

The TV partnership (official)

A deal was struck between OLLIE and commercial internet site La Red De La Lucha. OLLIE’s events will now be shown on the site for the next year, in an afternoon slot and with 40% of the revenue from the deal going to the venerable wrestling promotion. As the deal with give coverage across all of Mexico as well as Puerto Rico and the south west and mid south regions of the United States this is considered a real opportunity for OLLIE to rebuild their profile.

The training partnership (official... ish)

The kids (who may or may not be alright... and may or may not even be signed)

OLLIE have also announced an impromptu deal with Lucha Libre de Phoenix, the Phoenix III operated training school opened in 2017 in Mexico City. The three teenagers who have previously graduated from the facility - Astro, Fuego Fantastico and Super Diestro - are expected to be offered trial contracts with OLLIE. Phoenix III is also a permanent member of the OLLIE roster. He was the head booker until the arrival of Remmy Skye but the training school and duties as both a member of the OLLIE commentary team and road agent duties will keep him busy.

And, lest ye forget, the hero of this journey

Word is that Skye intends to bolster the ranks of tag teams using the current roster and there are also plans for a number of stables in the works in addition to the existing Galactic Force and The Council of Decay. The expectation is that there will be very little changes made to the roster for at least a couple of months.

LUCHAWEB! - OLLIE updates - January Week 1, 2020

Plancha is happy to bring you the following updates at the end of the first week of the OLLIE/Remmy Skye project:

1813427933_CelesteMoon.jpg.afd8305ed28165862d255ad87cc76c8d.jpg176587404_ElectricDreamer.jpg.2a019e7bd489274bc02a59f4aeff9fbc.jpg2140483259_MysteryPink.jpg.cd65392c1772561c301399e9ee484df8.jpg234019386_PurpleViper.jpg.d8102710b32b033f819803b627b10d68.jpg2097674736_QueenAmazon.jpg.429feab860b866c84ec8f728a28b44e6.jpg

The current (and previous) Campeonato de las Mujeres - some of the OLLIE girls

OLLIE are reputed to be in the market for 1 more luchadora. There are 9 currently on the books though only 3 of those are tecnicos and 6 are rudos so it seems likely that at least 1 of that half dozen will be turned at some point in the near future too. That being said, none of the 6 (Bizarro, Elsa Calvo, La Hija Del Diablo, Purple Viper, Queen Amazon and current champion Celeste Moon) look like natural fits on the tecnico side of the ledger so time will tell. The male roster is also skewed heavily towards rudos so some rebalancing may be necessary there also.

OLLIE.jpg.534c7b4bc806e85e415e07b8e320f37d.jpg1738318745_RemmySkye.jpg.9a00889eec8f4c0375e6ca82a8d288d1.jpgCZCW.jpg.0441721ac6b33c49f6469d97e5000bfe.jpg

The current and former homes of Remmy Skye who, we may have mentioned, is the hero of this particular tale.

Somewhat related to this is the acknowledgement that OLLIE will potentially lean more into their role as members of COTT - a group of which they are currently the only Mexican representatives. The strongest tie there appears to be with new booker Remmy Skye’s old stomping ground - CZCW - though there is also a talent trading arrangement in place with CILL that may prove beneficial to both promotions.

The Boss (very much part of the OLLIE furniture)

Pyromaniac, E-Z and Sanchez Vilano - unlikely to ever sit upon OLLIE furniture, let alone become a part of it!

Phoenix I hasn’t put many roadblocks in front of the new booker but he’s apparently made it clear that he isn’t keen on any hardcore or psychopath wrestlers being brought onboard. It’s hard to imagine Remmy Skye would have aimed his recruitment drive in that direction anyway but if you’ve been hoping to see Pyromaniac or Mexican Hardcore Killers in an OLLIE ring you can keep dreaming!

Astro.jpg.511f4261af09dd318d1eef827ec33a10.jpg996658649_FuegoFantastico.jpg.0b96d0ce76db62afa5cfcdc765ba4b80.jpg817855993_SuperDiestro.jpg.afe12ddc3842e8a4a66ffad2d16f5ca8.jpg371317688_JuliaAlvarez.jpg.dd777f7b7c2bd225188d27b33970ef34.jpg

The kids, who may still prove to be alright or not, are at least definitely signed.

OLLIE, as expected, have added to their ranks with some young, inexpensive talent. The following have signed on the dotted line and will be given the chance now to develop underneath the venerable banner of the world’s oldest operating wrestling promotion: Astro, Fuego Fantastico, Super Diestro and Julia Alvarez. Alvarez is a highly touted, 20 year old manager who has, in her handful of indie appearances to date, shown herself to be a very good talker. The other three, all just 19, graduated from Phoenix III’s dojo and are very much unproven commodities who may have to bide their time to make a significant impact.

OLLIE.jpg.534c7b4bc806e85e415e07b8e320f37d.jpgEILL.jpg.6c8e1f3fa229922f5307f153883eedbe.jpg

News also broke late this week about a deal being signed between OLLIE and EILL (formerly SOTBPW). The agreement, proposed by EILL, will see OLLIE accepting development workers from the Jorge Ibanez Jr fronted major player. Some see this as the clearest sign yet of how far OLLIE have fallen but there can be no doubt that they are clearly willing to take bold steps now to try and reverse their decline and it also seems apparent that they are under no illusions about their current place in the packing order. No indication yet as to when the first workers will arrive in OLLIE but once we know, you’ll know!

DarEatWorld, this dynasty is unreadable on light mode. You might want to change how you’re formatting the text so this dynasty can be read on all modes.

Hi James, really appreciate the heads up here. The new format of the boards has bamboozled me a little - I was turning the text white as it was barely visible on my own display here when I didn't. I'll try and figure it out.

Edit: I think I've fixed it now, thanks again for taking the time to point it out - consider a virtual signed Remmy Skye t-shirt on the way to you!

Edit to the edit: I have no idea why one of the entries is still appearing as mostly (but, confusingly, not all) black text on dark mode. Anyway... we'll carry on.

Where the hero works now...

The first week with OLLIE has been an interesting one. This is a big deal. This is a company with a tradition stretching all the way back to the 1950s. It puts my decade with CZCW into perspective for sure. That being said, the years have not been kind to the promotion and that is the only reason that I’m here - Phoenix I loading me into the gun in the hope that I will prove to be a silver bullet against the wolves circling OLLIE, the proud, exhausted stag in the ever growing war that is the modern wrestling battleground. I didn’t expect this opportunity, of course I didn’t but, that being said, now that I’m here I intend to make the most of my chance. Everyone can benefit from this.

2051678072_PhoenixI.jpg.7f0dacea7b95efcb2e54688a3b914c8b.jpg1957152773_PhoenixIII.jpg.449d5db07eeea4a844c9871113484ff8.jpg

The man he works for (and the man whose job he took)

A lot has been made of my gringo status here but I think that was part of the appeal. I won’t be as wedded to the ‘rules’ of Lucha Libre, such as they are. Straight away I’ll point to the deal we just agreed with EILL to take developmental workers from them. It’s a good idea, it makes sense but it would have been much more difficult for Phoenix I (or my predecessor in the booker’s chair Phoenix III) to take that deal. Those guys have been at war for a long time both with and against EILL/SOTBPW and even against MPWF. The days of the big three of lucha libre are done now. EILL won. That’s a tough pill to swallow for some people. For me? Not so much. My job is help develop OLLIE and part of that is acknowledging that we’re not in the same sphere as EILL right now, our peers are CILL and EMLL.

EILL.jpg.6c8e1f3fa229922f5307f153883eedbe.jpgCILL.jpg.0eda80ec1ae10b5449f0361fc8e5c64d.jpgCZCW.jpg.0441721ac6b33c49f6469d97e5000bfe.jpgCOTT.jpg.0e71eca6975844c317d865f73d127091.jpg

With friends like these...

It’s going to take some time for me to gain a real handle on what the current roster can do and the next few months will see everyone get a chance to show what they can offer. It’s a big enough group too and weirdly rudo heavy in both the mens’ and womens’ locker rooms. That is something that will need to be addressed. Overall though these early days are going to be about two things - we need to create a series of stories that will engage our current audience and, all going well, attract new eyes on the product. We also need to get the correct structures in place. Again, the EILL deal is a part of that but there’s also a strong relationship with CILL and my old friends in CZCW to be utilised for the good of all parties. We’re the only Mexican members of COTT, that’s a badge to be worn with pride and another window to avail of talent. The link with Phoenix III’s dojo, even semi-formally, is another.

LaRedDeLaLucha.jpg.3d7fae8b63247af07d41b2be7ce5a98b.jpg

The internet is the future kid...

Getting back on TV was important too, even if it just to provide a window for our monthly shows at the moment. The more people who can watch our offering, the more people we can win over. So coming to terms with La Red de la Lucha is a potential gamechanger for us too. I’m excited by what lies ahead, I can see a certain symmetry between OLLIE and myself - both with proud histories and uncertain futures. It’s going to be one hell of a ride. It’s no secret that I love to surf. I’m still seeking out that wave, still want to push myself, to get higher and higher, closer to the sky. We’re less than 3 weeks out now for OLLIE Lucha Libre Battle 2020. It will be beginning of something new and I believe it will kickstart a journey that will create unforgettable memories for all of us who play a part. It’s time for me to start learning Spanish in earnest too.

OOC: It's almost time to get started... next post will be a preview of OLLIE Lucha Libre Battle.

Campeonato de las Mujeres OLLIE title match - Celeste Moon © vs Mystery Pink
It was August when Celeste Moon began her third reign as the champion of OLLIE’s womens’ division after an opportunistic victory over Electric Dreamer. Since that win at Final Battle, Moon has only defended her title three times. She has not sat back in the shadows however, seemingly aiming to use her every appearance in an OLLIE ring to distance herself ever more from her past identity as the much loved Aguila Azul Celeste. Late last year this resulted in Moon attempting to break the arm of Mystery Pink (herself a two-time Womens’ Champion and former Mexican Champion). Mystery Pink is on the comeback trail now and will be seeking both revenge and championship gold when these two collide.

Electric Dreamer & Ursula Saez vs Queens of the Damned (La Hija Del Diablo & Queen Amazon)
The womens’ division will also be represented by this tag team match. The simmering rivalry between Electric Dreamer and Queen Amazon has been the bedrock of the whole division for much of it’s duration as a going concern in OLLIE. With four previous title reigns Amazon Queen has the most runs as champion while Electric Dreamer has three of her own and will be very keen to have another as soon as possible. In this match they will be backed up by La Hija Del Diablo (another former champion) and the powerful, prodigious Ursula Saez. No quarter will be asked or given in this one.

Marcos Flores vs Phobia
Marcos Flores has a resume befitting a legend. In OLLIE alone he’s held trios and tag team titles and been Universal Champion no fewer than six times. He won the Sam Keith Classic in 2013 and is a former COTT World Heavyweight Champion. Now 44 years he has justifiably earned the respect of almost all involved with OLLIE. Almost. Such a small word but one with such massive repercussions. The Council of Decay made it clear that they do not respect the decorated veteran. A war of words inevitably resulted in open conflict and the latest round of this ongoing clash will see Flores collide with Phobia at this first show of the year for OLLIE. The youngest member of The Council is a fearless (some would say reckless) combatant who will take any risk to damage his foes. This one will be a battle as Flores seeks to prove he still has what it takes and Phobia looks to make a real statement of intent about his own future and destroy one of the best to ever lace up a pair of boots in the meantime.

Campeonato de Mexico OLLIE title match - Disturbed © vs North Star Jr
The Campeonato de Mexico title will also be defended on the show with the unpredictable, silent Disturbed being challenged by North Star Jr as the fiery tecnico seeks a third run with the strap as he continues to try and build on his legacy and live up to the storied career of his grandfather, the revered North Star. Focus and purpose could well go out the window in this one - making a plan against somebody as unorthodox as Disturbed could prove to be futile indeed.

The Freedom Family (Luis Montero Jr w/Agueda Alonso & Tricolor Jr) vs Evil Intent (Hellspawn 666 & Slayyer)
It would be difficult to find two teams who are more polar opposites than these tandems. The Freedom Family, clean cut Luis Montero Jr and patriotic Tricolor Jr, haven’t held Tag Team gold together in over twelve years but the second generation duo remain a capable, popular pair with plenty of ability. Facing them are Evil Intent, multiple time champions in both OLLIE and MPWF and former holders of COTT World Tag Team titles to boot. The sadistic Slayyer and daemonic Hellspawn 666 are twisted, aggressive fighters who will go to any lengths to inflict as much pain as possible. This is a clash of mentalities and the victors will know they were in a war by the time it end.

Campeonato de Universal OLLIE title match - Nicolas Lopez © vs El Hijo de Espada Roja
NIcolas Lopez is the current (and eight time!) Campeonato de Universal OLLIE. The charismatic star is now in the veteran stage of his career but he hasn’t yet noticeably lost a step, living up to proclamations of those who feel he is the most naturally gifted wrestler in the history of lucha libre.Throughout his decorated career Lopez has been respected almost as much for his humility and integrity as for his skills between the ropes. Of course… not everybody feels that way about his approach to things. That’s where El Hijo de Espada Roja comes in. Another second generation star who has held plenty of titles of his own throughout his career, Roja is in his prime and adamant that 2020 will be his breakout year. He is insistent that knocking off Nicolas Lopez will be a defining statement of intent.Roja is certainly making all the right noises but only time will tell if he can back up his boasts once the bell rings.

The Main Event on the night will be this twenty man battle royal. Twenty men will begin this match and whoever is the last left in the ring will earn the right to challenge either Nicolas Lopez or El Hijo de Espada Roja for the biggest prize in OLLIE at February’s Eternal War. Choosing a winner from a field this competitive is surely not something that can be done with any degree of confidence.

I know Remmy Skye is often seen as the CVerse equivalent of Jeff Hardy, but this story is giving me Vampiro in AAA vibes. Excited to see what comes next.

I think the pose alone lends itself to comparing Skye to Hardy but what's always stood out to me about Remmy is that he never got his second chance. I always felt for him on that basis. Same with Becca Barton/Emma Bitch. So, hopefully, he'll get some sort of an Indian summer here.

Campeonato de Mexico OLLIE title match - Distubed © vs North Star Jr

The first televised match of the show saw things open with a clash between the energetic challenger North Star Jr and the unpredictable, mute champion Disturbed. The bout was keenly contested with neither man able to gain a conclusive advantage early on as the pair traded holds and counters. Momentum ebbed and flowed without definitive control being seized until, approaching the ten-minute mark, Disturbed missed with a lariat that would surely have broken the nose of his opponent had it connected. Instead, North Star Jr ducked underneath and, in fluid move, stepped behind and connected with a textbook German suplex. A running knee put Disturbed right back down to the mat and gave North Star the opportunity to take to the top turnbuckle while referee Domingo Castillo checked in on the reeling champion.

That moment of distraction for the official would prove crucial here. A woman emerged from the crowd and cracked North Star Jr over the head with what can only be described as a sceptre. The second-generation luchador sprawled awkwardly to the canvas. The opportunistic Disturbed needed no second invitation, dragging his foe back to his feet before planting him again with a jarring DDT and following that up with a Flying Double Stomp to make the three-count academic with Disturbed retaining at 11’46. The mystery woman joined him in the ring to celebrate.

The woman took a microphone then and introduced herself as Julia Alvarez. She said that she was going to act as Disurbed’s voice and also as the one who guides him. It should be noted that she seemed only faintly lucid herself but she was relatively convincing in the guise of somewhat manic schemer. Certainly, her presence can only enhance Disturbed’s grasp on his title.

Electric Dreamer & Ursula Saez vs Queens of the Damned (La Hija Del Diablo & Queen Amazon)

The first of the night’s luchadora matches followed. There was an awful lot to like about this. The Queens of the Damned are a strong pairing and Electric Dreamer carried this one as an excellent tecnico but all four women will feel that they contributed to the success of this match. The rudos were in charge early on, utilising all of their experience as a team to keep Ursula Saez isolated and work on keeping her grounded. Saez would eventually restore parity after a crunching double clothesline with La Hija Del Diablo and manage to make the hot tag. Electric Dreamer would assume control then, exploding into action against both her opponents to the delight of the audience and it seemed only a matter of time until her team would see their hands raised in victory. With Ursula Saez back in the ring and overpowering La Hija Del Diablo things would turn once more when the rudo raked the face of Saez, allowing another tag and the return to action of Amazon Queen. It was power against power then with Amazon Queen having the edge (though a cynical kick to Saez’ knee certainly didn’t hurt her momentum either). The Amazonian Powerbomb did enough to secure the victory for Queens of the Damned in 10’14.

Marcos Flores vs Phobia

A clash of opposites was next on the card. At 44 Marcos Flores has had an incredible career with his six runs as Campeonato de Universal OLLIE a testimony to his storied contribution to the rich tapestry of OLLIE’s history. He is, deservedly, held in the highest regard and seems a sure-fire contender for OLLIE’s Hall of Fame whenever he does hang up his boots. Of course… not all the attention garnered will be positive. The Council of Decay have turned their sights on Flores and tonight their youngest member, the unpredictable Phobia, was turned loose against the veteran.

It was another open battle here with the younger man bursting out of the blocks and showing his vicious streak. Flores sold superbly here and went some way towards establishing Phobia as a threat. Ultimately though the experience would prove decisive. Flores would take control back and, after using his ground game to work Phobia over, he would end this contest and take victory after his beautiful, hanging Flores Heaven Elbow at 10’25.

Marcos Flores’ celebrations were quickly cut short though by the emergence of Hijo del Mephisto. The Leader of The Council of Decay looked like an absolute killer here, attacking Flores from behind to the outrage of the audience. Phobia would join in the beatdown here though he looked a little lost compared to the accomplished pair in the ring with him. Still… the message was clear, Marcos FLores may well have won the battle tonight but the war is a long, long way from over.

The Freedom Family (Luis Montero Jr w/Agueda Alonso & Tricolor Jr) vs Evil Intent (Hellspawn 666 & Slayyer)

The remaining members of The Council of Decay were in action next with Hellspawn 666 and Slayyer - Evil Intent - in tag team action against the second generation pairing of Luis Montero Jr and Tricolor Jr - The Freedom Family. This was another collision of opposites. Evil Intent set out to live up to their name but The Freedom Family are not men to be easily daunted.

Slayyer was the weak link here, failing to match the standard set by the other three and it seemed fitting that he was the man who was pinned, following a flash rollup from the best performer bell-to-bell, Tricolor, after 13’52 minutes of action. If questions will now be asked about how much Slayyer still has in the tank there were plenty of positives here from an OLLIE point of view. Luis Montero Jr has an excellent chemistry with both his tag partner and his manager, Agueda Alonso. Evil Intent also work well together as a team and it seems fair to say that this particular arm of The Council of Decay’s plot to seemingly combat all of the tecnicos they can see at the same time isn’t done yet either. For The Freedom Family… they’ll surely have at least one eye on challenging for Tag Team gold once more.

Campeonato de las Mujeres OLLIE title match - Celeste Moon © vs Mystery Pink

It was back to Luchadoras then as we entered the next part of the night. The covering on the forearm of Mystery Pink (coloured pink, of course) was the legacy of the savage attack a few months ago that had led us to this. This match was, of course, about the Campeonato de las Mujeres OLLIE but it was also about so much more. Watching these two glowering at each other before the bell rang suggested we were facing into a wild brawl. The reality was, initially at least, somewhat different.

The two women set out to have a technical masterclass. Unfortunately for them, and the match, the crowd had been worked up to a frenzy by the earlier action and, accordingly, they weren’t necessarily in the right place to appreciate this for what it was. It certainly wasn’t bad though and, particularly once Celeste Moon started to cut corners and take cheap shots, she drew plenty of derision from those watching. We had a number of near falls on either side during a lengthy contest that turned when Moon locked in a kimura on Pink’s injured arm. With the challenger trapped and screaming in the middle of the ring, referee Domingo Castillo was left with no option but to call for a stoppage to save Mystery Pink from further damage. Celeste Moon retained in 15’50 then and underlined once more that she is a very different competitor now to the one who was once so adored. Cynical, single minded and willing to do whatever it takes to take whatever she wants.

Campeonato de Universal OLLIE title match - Nicolas Lopez © vs El Hijo de Espada Roja

The semi-main would follow with the biggest title in the company up for grabs as living legend Nicolas Lopez put his prize on the line against the sneaky, devious El Hijo de Espada Roja. The challenger has already held Campeonata de Mexico and Campeonatos de Trios titles on multiple occasions across his time in what is now EILL and here in OLLIE and was determined that this would be the occasion when he took his career to the next level. Nicolas Lopez is a man of great pride though and he is not a man to be pushed aside for anyone’s vanity.

The pair set out to steal the show and, even at the risk of sounding critical, I would say it’s fair to suggest that they didn’t quite manage that. The basic story of the match seemed to be that every time Lopez appeared to be in the ascendency, the younger challenger would cut him off by breaking the rules. Every time though the champion would fight back and, eventually, at the 12’39 mark, he would successfully retain after hitting his patented Lopez Buster. A good match but not a great one!

Following the win Lopez was celebrating with his fans lapping it up when he realised that the defeated El Hijo de Espada Roja was still in the ring. The two had a bit of a staredown which ended when the champion offered a hand, clearly impressed by the desire shown by Roja. After teasing leaving without accepting the proffered handshake, Roja instead took and shook the hand of the man who had beaten him. Lopez then raised Roja’s hand and urged the crowd to applaud the defeated fighter and they obliged, presumably helping OLLIE to balance the tecnico/rudo imbalance on their roster.

And so to the first Main Event of the Remmy Skye era - the thrills and spills of a 20 man Battle Royal with a crack at Nicolas Lopez and his title promised for the winner. This was enjoyable, lasting 30’01 and being full of the sort of action you’d expect from such a bout. Coulrophobia and The Canadian Daredevils didn’t last long but even in their brief exchanges there was enough exchanges between them that it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them in more shared conflict going forwards. Phoenix IV seemed off form and eliminated by the veteran El Critico who was, in turn, thrown out himself by Phoenix II. Phoenix II was one of the standouts here in fact, taking advantage of the abundance of rudos in the ring to help himself to the most eliminations, taking out Amo Del Gato, Dragon Americano, Mr Lucha III and Storm Spillane as well as El Critico.
Phoenix II then found himself in the final four against the veritable rogues' gallery of Extraordinario Jr, Hijo Del Mephisto and Silver Tiger. The rudos, predictably, used their strength of numbers to overwhelm the beleaguered Phoenix II but the resolve of the man was proven again when he reversed an attempt by Silver Tiger to hurl him over the top rope and eliminated his aggressor instead. This seemed only to focus the remaining pair of villains however. Extraordinario Jr and Hijo Del Mephisto put on a clinic of brutality then, leaving their foe with barely opportunity to breathe. The assault came to an end when Hijo Del Mephisto scored a vicious dropkick to remove Phoenix II from contention. That left us with the leaders of Galactic Force and the Council of Decay as our final two. Briefly. Mephisto barely had time to bounce back to his feet after eliminating Phoenix II before Extraordinario Jr, never one to let an opportunity pass by without leaping upon it, cleared the ring by way of a potent clothesline. The winner… and the new number one contender for the Campeonatos de Universal OLLIE title - Extraordinario Jr!

Nice show! Didn't expect Mr. Lucha III to be out of the Final 4 lol but Extra Jr is a great choice

I'll be very honest with you all here. 😊 My exposure to the Mexican C-verse is limited to my second attempt at a diary here - a six-month stint with CILL (I enjoyed it and might bring back the concept of a Pentagram Match from it). What that does mean though is that my familiarity with this roster is very limited and I'm just about starting to rectify that (in the game sense I suppose this also reflects Remmy Skye's comparative ignorance about Mexico). The first show calling for a Battle Royal also didn't help much in terms of getting a feel for what I can expect from various roster members. The only people currently on the books that I have any real experience with are:

El Pavo Real (from the CILL dynasty mentioned above)
Hellech/Pierrot (from an even shorter IPW diary)
Jason Van Pelt and Kamikaze (I had a private ACPW game that covered a few years of game time and I kept both these guys around, expect Van Pelt to be referred to as JVP often)
The American Cobras (I also had a decent CZCW private game for a spell and I know how good the Cobras can be, I have a vague memory of also booking Malloy in the ACPW save and called him Rage Malloy)
Remmy Skye (The man himself popped up in my private CZCW game, my brief IPW dynasty and, now that I'm thinking about it, also a short TCW save that was my only foray into a 'big' company and that had a few weeks written up for a dynasty but never published here when I ran into file issues)

All of which is a very long-winded way of saying that I was a little surprised with all the Mr Lucha III love in the predictions. Truthfully, at that point, he was just a guy with a fairly boring mask who seemed very generic to me. For both Remmy and Dar (that's me, pleased to meet you!) everything about the guy just screamed mid-card. Now, here in the real world I've just finished writing up the second show (it'll be a while before it's posted, don't get too excited) and I'll acknowledge freely that, while Remmy might not be aware of it yet, I've realised that we will need to find something for Mr Lucha III to do sooner rather than later!

Lucha III is your best guy who hasn't held the main belt yet, but he's not your only interesting guy. Mephisto, Extraordinario, Silver Tiger, they all kick ass, and your women can main event. Do what you want, bury anyone you want, we're here for the journey.

First show was really promising, can't wait for more.

Touch The Skye #2 - Remmy says:

I surfed as the sun came up this morning. Some people would say that this is not the sort of behaviour a 35-year old man should be engaging in, that I should have outgrown the urge to paddle out into the Pacific Ocean in the darkness but if I’m ever so jaded that the sun breaking the horizon doesn’t light up something deep down in my soul then it really is time to give up. And a couple of days on from my first show with OLLIE… I am in no mood to give up.

One and done for now? A Flash in the pan if you will!

I really, really enjoyed myself. Let’s get that out of the way first. Even if I planted myself on the preshow, it’s been a while since I got to go out there in front of 2,391 people. Big props too to Flash Savage who came in on short notice to take me on (and audition himself too I suppose).

The greedy number one contender

It was nice to be back in a locker room too and this OLLIE roster is a good one. A lot of good people in there with just a handful of less likeable among them - hopefully not enough to ever spoil the barrel. There’s some weathered warriors though and they have the camaraderie you’d expect - Phoenix I and Marcos Flores stood out as two guys who have become genuine friends as they’ve trekked across Mexico over the decades. The boss man isn’t afraid to take a stand either though as Marvel Malloy would discover, charged as he was to buy a round of drinks after the show for the heinous crime of spending too long posing in front of the mirror. To be fair… he’s a good-looking dude. I had a few decisions to make myself in the aftermath of the evening when Extraordinario Jr came looking for a pay rise. His timing wasn’t great to be honest, a more cynical soul than mine might have felt like they were being held up slightly given that the request was minutes after he’d become our new number one contender for our top title but, you know, he was definitely being underpaid and his new ‘demands’ were hardly exorbitant too. As I’ll discuss further down this blog too, we can afford it.

The big time

Before that let’s look at something a little bit less positive. I’ve never been someone who pays too much attention to the reviews awarded by the likes of TEW.com or their ilk but let’s take a moment to see how they scored the shows of us and our closest competitors this month. We can, realistically, ignore EILL who operate in a different world to us at the moment, but their monthly PPV was rated at 83 with a crowd of 30,000 and 553,840 PPV buys. This is even before we look at their weekly TV show.

The challengers (helpfully listed here in order of performance)

CILL’s show was scored at 54 and drew a crowd of 401. We, in case you missed it pulled 61 in front of 2,391. EMLL had 804 paying customers… and an event score of 62. Now nobody has said a word and it’s only our first show etc etc etc blah blah blah. I’m a chilled out, laid back dude. This, as the kids say, is known. That said, however relaxed I might be, I do not want to be trailing in behind El Bandido and his boys every month. So we will need to take some steps to address that.

That brings us, quite happily, to the balance sheet. We made a profit of $47,053 in January (and only $7,091 of that was broadcast revenue). So that absolutely gives us some room to play with. We have a few options here of course and we’ll need to make decisions where to spend a little more. Our productions standards are one option but it’s one that seems a bit redundant to me unless EMLL or CILL make the leap to television too. We could look to improve our merchandise arm which is definitely worth considering but is unlikely to add too much to our show quality in the short term. The same could be said for investing a bit in the backstage facilities but I think that might be a worthwhile investment anyway to keep morale up. A bigger consideration would be adding a second monthly show (or even a minor, secondary one) or, potentially, trying to go weekly ourselves. Additional shows might be needed too to utilise all of our rather large roster and also perhaps provide us with scope for a few more hires. Would it be the worst thing in the world to raid EMLL? I’m just thinking out loud here of course but time will tell and the next few months will be interesting ones here in Mexico. I’m even playing around with the idea of moving down here though central Mexico might not be the most natural home in the world for a man of the ocean such as myself.

For now though, I’m going to wrap it up here and get back out on the water. All life is change my friends and we can’t avoid that. Sometimes we can only go with it and see where we end up. Until next time… keep your eyes on the horizon.

Very much like the character of Julia Alvarez and the concept of her pairing with Disturbed. Also, I can't see the title of this diary and not hear trumpets in my head.

I can't see whatever video this is. :( Presumably the video is unavailable in Ireland?

I'm looking forward to the journey myself (I think the second show is more enjoyable than the first) and it's been very gratifying to get so much engagement already! It's appreciated.
