Touch the Skye - the story of how Remmy Skye took the OLLIE book and a winding road to Mexico in search of salvation.

OLLIE is my favorite Mexican company. Reading your foray into the “People’s Promotion” I’m sold on how your going about this. The whole story of Skye’s experience with depression was explained well and it was nice to see that represented. Especially how it was portrayed in the greater wrestling community that he had a drug problem when that was never the issue. Really excited to see what will come in the future!

That's very nice of you to say. I like to have linkups that are slightly unorthodox to help drive some sort of dramatic narrative - so in this case Skye is coming in, as a gringo, and with a long spell on the sidelines on his resume. My Remmy Skye is a man who is as laid-back and chilled out as you'd expect but still, there is a sense of what might have been and, I think, perhaps so far under the surface that he's not even fully aware of it himself, a sense of disappointment at how things have turned out, at being denied that second chance.

Twisting the story of his downfall a little, tweaking the real cause at least, is hopefully something else that can be worked into the take as it unfolds. Remmy Skye and OLLIE are unlikely bedfellows but both desperate enough to get a scent of their former glory that they need each other, that they're willing to roll the dice and see where it leads them. Like you, I'm excited as to what the future holds.

I saw that uncertainty within Skye when he was explaining how he is a chilled person cause of how unsure he was. The depression still resides in him and makes him question himself, he does what he’s always done gone to the water but he needs something new to break this funk and heads to Mexico getting the call from OLLIE who as you said are just as desperate for creativity and something to break through the stale wall. I’m so amped!

LUCHA WEB! - OLLIE updates - February, Week 1, 2020

OLLIE.jpg.534c7b4bc806e85e415e07b8e320f37d.jpg
OLLIE, OLLIE, OLLIE! OI, OI, OI!

We’re 3 weeks out from OLLIE Eternal War which seems a good time for us here at Lucha Web to to update you on the recent moves and shakes from within the OLLIE camp. The overall consensus is that they were content with how things went at Lucha Libre Battle, though the eyebrow that was raised when EMLL’s show was rated at a 62 to OLLIE’s 61 will only have gotten higher when CILL pulled a 66 last night at their Declaracion de Guerra event which was main evented by an excellent Maribel Mercado Vs Pinky Perez clash for the CILL World Women’s Championship. OLLIE’s own Mystery Pink also appeared on the show in the clearest indication yet that there will be some cooperation between the two promotions going forward.

The upcoming visitors

The word here is that OLLIE will initially be looking to utilise the link to pad out their rather unbalanced luchadoras division with Antonia Andres and Catalina Vazquez both confirmed to be making an appearance at Eternal War. In addition to this OLLIE have signed two more people to their roster.

146626094_VelvetSuarez.jpg.7e6841d4e347cc7f78208081a9f64481.jpg
Noobie Numero Uno - penny for your thoughts?

Velvet Suarez - Penelope "Velvet" Suarez is a solid luchadora who made her debut in 2013. She was brought up around the world of lucha libre, her family being big fans who took her to all the local shows as a child, and that inspired her to begin training to become a professional wrestler in 2011. She has quickly developed into an exciting talent and will likely make a good addition to somebody's roster in the near future. That roster may now be OLLIE’s.

Payaso.jpg.fcc00cb97178b3ccab4841193e82bc60.jpg
Noobie Numero Dos - send in the clowns1

Payaso Jr - The original Payaso was Javier Cepeda, a luchador who was handed the gimmick by a quick-thinking promoter who had noticed the youngster's natural zest for life. The gimmick fitted Cepeda like the pants of a man with five penises - like a glove. He went on to have a long and happy career, entertaining thousands of lucha libre fans. Payaso Jr is played by Justin "JC" Cepeda, Javier's youngest son, and is liable to be just as popular with fans as the original was back in the 1970s and 80s. He got his first big break when he joined MPWF in April 2014, but unfortunately the company was already struggling and was out of business within seven months, landing Payaso back on the independent scene. Many considered him the best unsigned talent in Mexico and, after appearing on the Lucha Libre Battle preshow he earned a contract with OLLIE.

Flash! Aww-aww! (Probably not) The Saviour of the Universe!

The other unsigned talent to appear on that preshow was Flash Savage, the Mexico based Canadian with stints with MAW and NOTBPW on his resume. He has NOT been signed to a contract at this time though it is believed that OLLIE have not closed the door and are willing to potentially work with him again.

The next Main Event... probably

The company is also said to have most of their booking in place up to the biggest show of the year, OLLIE Luchaslam, at the end of April. Obviously, while all plans are subject to change, this does suggest that we will not see any momentous changes until after that show at least. The Main Event at the next show, OLLIE Eternal War, while not yet confirmed is expected to be the Nicolas Lopez - Extraordinario Jr match for the Campeonato de Universal title slated at the end of the previous show. OLLIE will continue to broadcast their shows on La Red de la Lucha with the company reported to be happy with the 0.11 TV rating (88,631 viewers) as a number they can build upon. All things considered the first month or so of the Remmy Skye era has been satisfactory for all parties.

Campeonato de Universal OLLIE Title Match- Nicolas Lopez © Vs Extraordinario Jr

The most prestigious prize in OLLIE will be defended at Eternal War. The current (and 8 time) champion, the legendary Nicolas Lopez will face off against the swaggering leader of Galactic Force. Fresh off the back of overcoming 19 other men to win a Battle Royal to earn this opportunity, Extraordinario Jr will be supremely confident at winning the Campeonato de Universal for a second time himself. These two men are almost diametrically opposite in demeanour and approach and there’s no shortage of distaste on either side of this one. The challenger considers himself the true star in the OLLIE sky but, even at 44, ‘The Untouchable’ Nicolas Lopez is not keen to be shuffled off the stage by anyone!

Marcos Flores & The Freedom Family (Luis Montero Jr w/Agueda Alonso & Tricolor Jr) Vs Hijo Del Mephisto & Evil Intent (Hellspawn 666 & Slayyer)

The Council of Decay are another stable who seem to have very little respect for the established stars with Marcos Flores the man they’ve set out to destroy. Flores gained a measure of momentum at Luche Libre Battle 2020, defeating the youngest member of the Council, Phobia. At Eternal War he’ll have his hands full with the other three members of The Council of Decay - Hellspawn 666, Slayyer (the collective Evil Intent) and their diabolical leader Hijo Del Mephisto. He will not be alone however, being seconded by The Freedom Family - the second generation pairing of Luis Montero Jr and Tricolor Jr. The Freedom Family saw off the challenge of Evil Intent at OLLIE’s last show and that is a simmering rivalry in it’s own right.

Phoenix IV Vs El Critico

Another battle of opposites here with two men at very different points in their career booked to clash. Phoenix IV is the latest man to wear the proud moniker and, as the son of the original, this youngster, still just 24 years old, has much expected of him. He’s already held both the Mexican and the Trios title twice each and seems to have all the tools required to live up to the legacy. This match against the veteran El Critico will give a good opportunity to see just how ready Phoenix IV is to take the next step. El Critico has held the Campeonato de Universal twice and he bristles visibly at any suggestion that he is a stepping stone for any man. His intention, his expectation even, is that he will show that Phoenix IV has a long, long way to go yet to reach his level.

Ursula Saez & Velvet Suarez Vs Queens of the Damned (La Hija del Diablo & Queen Amazon)

This tag team Luchadora bout will see a debut for new signing Velvet Suarez as she teams with ‘The Mayan Mauler’ Ursula Saez against Queens of the Damned. Saez will be seeking revenge after suffering defeat to the same pairing when she was partnering Electric Dreamer last month. Saez and Queen Amazon will match power while their respective partners focus more on flashy, aerial attacks. With momentum so crucial in a division as fiercely contested as OLLIE’s Luchadora ranks, a victory here could be very important to the long-term goals of these talented competitors.

Laberinto Jr Vs Silver Tiger

This will be the first singles outing of the year for both of these men after they took part in the Battle Royal at the last show. Both these men are decorated fighters - Laberinto has held a multitude of gold in OLLIE, having previously held the Mexican title (twice), tag team gold (twice) and trios belts (three times). He’s an established, talented, an experienced wrestler, in and around his peak and he would be the favourite to beat most men, anywhere in the world. Silver Tiger though… he is no ordinary man. He has twice held the Campeonato de Universal OLLIE title as well as winning the prestigious Sam Keith Classic in 2015. He caught the eye in the Battle Royal too, making it all the way to the final four and giving an ample reminder of his considerable talents.

El Hijo de Espada Roja Vs Dragon Americano

El Hijo de Espada Roja came up short in his pursuit of the Campeonato de Universal last month, suffering a defeat against Nicolas Lopez. Many men would be crushed by this but Roja is, somewhat improbably, viewing it as a positive. The former EILL standout has come to realise that he didn’t much like the person he’d become and he intends to build upon this defeat and find redemption as he builds his way back to the top, to turn his most humbling defeat into the first step of his pathway to success. The brash, arrogant Dragon Americano has summed up this revelation as follows, “a coward’s promise, a loser’s philosophy, a very, very Mexican mindset.” In 2017 these men (along with current Campeonato de Mexico Disturbed) had a very successful, 11-month reign as Campeonatos de Trios). There is a personal edge to this one.

Blue Phantom Vs Mr Lucha III

This will be another collision between two more men seeking to build some buzz as we progress through the months. The mysterious Blue Phantom, a man of few words but pure heart and the big shot, big mouth Mr Lucha. Two up and coming talents with plenty to prove, this is an opportunity for them both to make an impression. Only one can win though and whoever does… will have to earn it.

Campeonato de Mexico OLLIE Title Match- Disturbed © w/Julia Alvarez Vs El Pavo Real

The Campeonato de Mexico will also be defended at Eternal War. Disturbed has always been a dangerous, destructive force and now, being directed by the malicious mind of Julia Alvarez, he has even more of an upside than before. His latest challenger is already wearing championship gold as one third of the Trios champions - El Pavo Real. The experienced, colourful Real, a multiple time world champion in CILL, has struggled to make serious inroads since coming back to OLLIE but will have every belief in himself to add the Campeonato de Mexico OLLIE to his resume.

Predictions Card:

Marcos Flores & The Freedom Family (Luis Montero Jr w/Agueda Alonso & Tricolor Jr) Vs Hijo Del Mephisto & Evil Intent (Hellspawn 666 & Slayyer)

Love to see an OLLIE diary, and this is a fresh new perspective. Good job so far!

Campeonato de Universal OLLIE Title Match- Nicolas Lopez © Vs Extraordinario Jr
Lopez is a bit of a tricky customer so he might not want to drop the belt. But Extraordinario Jr is, well, extraordinary. I think he gets the belt eventually, but Lopez holds onto it for now.

Marcos Flores & The Freedom Family (Luis Montero Jr w/Agueda Alonso & Tricolor Jr) Vs Hijo Del Mephisto & Evil Intent (Hellspawn 666 & Slayyer)
Council of Decay get the win thanks to Phobia's interference, or some other shenanigans.
Phoenix IV Vs El Critico
Can Phoenix IV beat the veteran and rise up the card? I think so.
Ursula Saez & Velvet Suarez Vs Queens of the Damned (La Hija del Diablo & Queen Amazon)
Don't mess with the Queen.
Laberinto Jr Vs Silver Tiger
Laberinto Jr has had his time, now he's gonna job to one of the best future stars in the company.

El Hijo de Espada Roja Vs Dragon Americano
Maybe this tecnico turn will finally see him rise to the top, and a win over Dragon Americano will cement his new direction.

Blue Phantom Vs Mr Lucha III
If you can keep him around, Mr. Lucha III is THE guy. Talented in the ring and on the microphone, he's a cut above the rest.

Campeonato de Mexico OLLIE Title Match- Disturbed © w/Julia Alvarez Vs El Pavo Real
New manager for Disturbed is cool. I think he gets the win here. El Pavo Real is a solid hand to take the loss.

This is a very stacked card, almost makes me want to get the ol' OLLIE save file out!

Predictions Card:
Campeonato de Universal OLLIE Title Match-
Nicolas Lopez © Vs Extraordinario Jr

This is the standard feud the save starts out with, and it's an incredible one between two top luchadors, but there's so many good wrestlers one can't help but pick their "guy" to get the title first. I think HDM or Mr Lucha will beat Extraordinario out, and then he and the entire galactic force will turn tecnico because they're by far the most fun and entertaining group in the company.

Marcos Flores & The Freedom Family (Luis Montero Jr w/Agueda Alonso & Tricolor Jr) Vs Hijo Del Mephisto & Evil Intent (Hellspawn 666 & Slayyer)

The head honcho of the rudo group will get revenge for January's losses, and Flores vs HDM will be a huge match soon.

Phoenix IV Vs El Critico

I'm very conflicted here, El Critico is still good and could have filler title challenges but the upper card Rudos in their prime are better, and there's nothing more fancy in old school lucha companies than nepotism. At least both Phoenix IV and Atlantis Jr are excellent talents.

Ursula Saez & Velvet Suarez Vs Queens of the Damned (La Hija del Diablo & Queen Amazon)

Going with the debut, Ursula is really good too but probably not top tier yet.

Laberinto Jr Vs Silver Tiger

Silver Tiger is just an excellent luchador.

El Hijo de Espada Roja Vs Dragon Americano

He's really valuable as a secondary tecnico, he got a big spotlight on him in the last show, I think he's going to be one of your guys and I am excited for it.

Blue Phantom Vs Mr Lucha III

I love Blue Phantom, he's a great talent, I think his bio is harsh on him. Having said that, Mr Lucha III is the second coming of Pablo Rodriguez as far as complete rudos go.

Campeonato de Mexico OLLIE Title Match- Disturbed © w/Julia Alvarez Vs El Pavo Real

Don't see the vet overcoming one of the most entertaining midcard rudos in the company, but who knows? El Pavo Real has the CILL pedigree and is solidly charismatic if you want to make another heel a big deal.

The Show
Humberto Tortega: Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Humberto Tortega and it is my great pleasure to welcome you to OLLIE Eternal War, coming to you live from Puebla on La Red de la Lucha. I have been with this company for almost 6 years now and I’ve never been as excited about where OLLIE is going as I am right now. Joining me tonight are two men with plenty of experience and knowledge, the inimitable Phoenix III and ‘The Mexican Pit Bull’ Rafael Ruiz. My friends… we have a night of action ahead of us.
Phoenix III: Every night in OLLIE has an abundance of action Humberto but I agree with you, this feels like the beginning of something special - the journey to LuchaSlam starts tonight and I am glad to have the best seat in the house here at ringside. I barely know what to expect but the unexpected is good enough for me.
Rafael Ruiz: I know what to expect. Tonight we witness the end of the career of Nicolas Lopez!
Humberto Tortega: Well only time will tell if that proves to be the case and we have a full card to get through before we get to our Main Event - a clash between champion Nicolas Lopez and challenger Extraordinario Jr for the Campeonato de Universal championship. First up tonight though we have two other men hungry to prove themselves - Blue Phantom and Mr Lucha III!

774349185_BluePhantom.jpg.be382031853ebfe0ea070802a6075757.jpgVersus.jpg.b90df6bd6e93d031f7de06d8344d96c7.jpg662138816_MrLuchaIII.jpg.864b81b23e19550878b143f718462bc3.jpg
Blue Phantom Vs Mr Lucha III

The opening contest proved to be an outstanding one to kick off the show. The mysterious Blue Phantom took his exciting offence to his foe early on with Mr Lucha selling brilliantly as the aggrieved heel, taking his protestations to unmoved referee Domingo Castillo. Momentum would change when Mr Lucha landed a cynical kick to the knee of his opponent. He would work over the joint then before, seemingly for a change of pace, dropkicking Blue Phantom to the outside. Not willing to let his advantage go to waste, the opportunistic rudo would follow Phantom to the floor, whipping him into the ring steps before hitting a German suplex to send Phantom crashing through the ringside barrier. Mr Lucha III would then return to the ring, browbeating Castillo through every step of his count which ended with Blue Phantom, cradling his damaged knee, failing to make it back into the ring. A win for Mr Lucha III then and a very, very serious statement of intent from him.
Match Rating: 69

Humberto Tortega: That was an eye-opener. I think we saw something from Mr Lucha III tonight that we haven’t seen before.
Phoenix III: Yes indeed, a mean streak a mile wide.
Rafael Ruiz: This is good to see. A real man knows no limits, will do whatever it takes. Mr Lucha III has always been a talented fighter but if he has added more intensity and fire to his strategy he will be a match for anybody!
Humberto Tortega: We’ll have to wait and see how that plays… of my, what’s happening now?

The lights have all gone off and a twisted, broken sounding variant on the traditional circus music starts to echo hauntingly throughout the building… when the lights flare up again and then fade to a dull glow, each turnbuckle is adorned by a twisted, clownish visage - Bizarro, Hellech, Payaso Jr and Pierrot gaze balefully out at the crowd and there is a moment of silence - shocked silence from the audience, a more ominous one from within the ring.

Bizarro.jpg.602b80b6d25125af1e9e0e3ce5c6a2e2.jpgHellech.jpg.b3c300c50648e5f7c88d3bff70c58b8e.jpgPierrot.jpg.fa0b60d0466e40f38797dfc6e8f53492.jpgPayaso.jpg.fcc00cb97178b3ccab4841193e82bc60.jpg

Payaso Junior: All life is a joke, a twisted mirage of merriment. The joke is on you all though for you are the punchlines.

Bizarro (laughing hysterically): They don’t get the joke, they can’t sense the meaning or the method of the madness. Let us entertain you, let us entertain you.

Hellech: Let us destroy you! Let the sound of our righteous laughter bleed from your ears as we carve up your soul. Anything to add, Brother Pierrot?

Pierrot (cocks his head to one side):

Payaso Junior: The man who never speaks never speaks a foolish word. You were all here at the beginning, you may perish long before the end. The Psycho Circus have arrived.

The lights flash brightly and then everything goes dark again. When the lights do return to normal perhaps 30 seconds later the quartet in the ring have disappeared.
Angle Rating: 36

Humberto Tortega: I… I’m not quite sure what to say to that.
Phoenix III: The clowns appear to be multiplying.
Rafael Ruiz: I’ve always enjoyed the circus.
Humberto Tortega: Hopefully we’ll all enjoy this next match, a contest between two men at very different stages of their careers - the up and coming Phoenix IV, who has twice held Trios gold with the man to my right, against the wily veteran El Critico.
Rafael Ruiz: This is a mismatch, El Critico has way too much for this punk kid, he’s only here because of who his father is.
Phoenix III: That is simply not true, having teamed with Phoenix IV I can assure you that he is the real deal and very deserving of every opportunity he’s been given.

Phoenix IV vs El Critico

This was an enjoyable, technically accomplished match up, with both men contributing to a back-and-forth encounter. The young Phoenix IV, 20 years younger than his foe, made up in energy whatever he was giving away in experience and the veteran was barely able to keep up in the early stages. Even as momentum ebbed and flowed there was no point at which the younger man looked out of his depth. Right up to the moment when, with referee Domingo Castillo momentarily out of position, El Critico laid his opponent low with a vindictive low blow. From there it was a simple matter for the experienced rudo to lock in a figure four leg lock in the middle of the ring and there was nothing Phoenix IV could do but tap out and submit at 14’58
Match Rating: 55

1054445061_PhoenixII.jpg.0fcf32cc3e2bf2e894e579882672ce43.jpg

After the match ended El Critico, seemingly angered by how difficult Phoenix IV had made the match for him, refused to release the submission hold. This quickly drew Phoenix II from the back to make the save. Faced with a fresh foe El Critico quickly broke the hold and skulked to the back, insisting on having the referee raise his hand in victory as he left while Phoenix II helped Phoenix IV to his feet.
Angle Rating: 38

Humberto Tortega: Despicable from El Critico there. Cheats to win and proves himself a bad winner on top of that!
Phoenix III: Disgusting. Envy! I would say that he was pushed to the very limit by somebody who is just starting out in this business. El Critico is a coward I say.
Rafael Ruiz: You might say he is a coward, I say he is the winner of that match and the man who made a mark in the sand too. He’s not intimidated, no matter how many of you Phoenix masks are around.
Phoenix III: I should have known you’d approve of that sort of cheap, sneaky nonsense.
Humberto Tortega: Gentleman, please! Let’s keep the conflict in the ring. We’ve another match now anyway, this one featuring a debut for Velvet Suarez.

Ursula Saez & Velvet Suarez vs Queens of the Damned (La Hija del Diablo & Queen Amazon)

The Queens of the Damned were decisive here, utilising all their experience as both individuals and a pair, to control the bulk of the action in this one. The tecnico pair were game certainly and made their opponents work hard for it but Queen Amazon in particular looked a force to be reckoned with today - an unstoppable combination of power and intent that was in no mood to be denied. She would deservedly score the victory for him team here, securing the 3 count on debutant Suarez in 9’45 after her Amazonian Powerbomb.
Match Rating: 55

Humberto Tortega: Queens of the Damned looking, if you’ll allow the expression, damn impressive tonight.
Phoenix III: Saez and Suarez weren’t lacking in heart but Queen Amazon looked almost unstoppable out there tonight.
Rafael Ruiz: I think I might be in love. What a woman.
Humberto Tortega: Speaking of spectacular women… Gabriela Ortega is going to conduct an interview now with the Campeonatos de Parejas OLLIE - Space Invaders!

1109545160_GabrielaOrtega_alt.jpg.c7a526d2186c6d8d690567f3847b4095.jpg1979395432_CosmicRider.jpg.5a8df6519b0ae97ea38e3e9d158b49ab.jpg1869248730_ExtranjeroLoco.jpg.818458794e2d2f9389780f879b65c163.jpg

The beautiful Ortega is in the ring, making her first appearance of the year when the music of the tag team champions plays and Space Invaders make their way to the ring. This was solid fare with Cosmic Rider and Extranjero Loco offering up their rather unorthodox opinions on a host of challengers for the titles that they hold. They were it should be noted, quite dismissive, calling The Freedom Family “flag-waving fools,” The Canadian Daredevils “inferior genetic material unworthy of masks”, The Eternal Kings as being “eternally washed up”, the various combinations of the Phoenix “the last cry of a doomed empire” and even heaping some scorn on Rudo Combos like Evil Intent “a decade past their never very impressive peak” and The American Cobras “even for snakes, these guys are pretty low, chained to the earth with the limited perspective that brings.” Overall… Space Invaders might be making some more enemies than is, strictly speaking, a good idea.
Angle Rating: 45

Humberto Tortega: Space Invaders taking aim at… well at everyone really.
Phoenix III: Their slights against the way of the Phoenix will not go unheard.
Rafael Ruiz: Oh, just let it go! Half of you guys are retired and, as we saw earlier, the new blood isn’t up to much. Space Invaders though… these guys might be a little crazy but they can back it up.
Humberto Tortega: Would you say they’re out of this world?

Rafael Ruiz: I would say you’re not funny.
Humberto Tortega: Oh come on, that was funny!
Phoenix III: I don’t often agree with Ruiz but I’m afraid that was not funny.
Humberto Tortega: I think I prefer it when you two are fighting! Alright, back to the ring then!

El Hijo de Espada Roja Vs Dragon Americano

Matches between former allies can be particularly bitter affairs and this one seemed loaded with malice from the outset. Dragon Americano has been outspokenly harsh in his criticism of El Hijo de Espada Roja since Roja’s defeat to Nicolas Lopez at Lucha Libre Battle last month. The worst part of it all, according to Americano, isn’t even that Roja missed out on a chance to win the top title in OLLIE, it’s that, in Dragon’s words, “you lost like a bum, a sack of crap who didn’t even do all in his power to get the job done and then meekly shook hands with the man who put you down.” Dragon also suggested, as is his way, that this loser’s mentality was particularly Mexican and another reason why Americans were the superior nationality.
Roja, determined to turn over a new leaf and win back his lost honour, was duly fired up for this one, taking the action to the American rudo from the very first bell. Dragon Americano’s approach seemed to be mostly to frustrate - regularly leaving the ring to regroup, taking refuge in the ropes and literally hiding behind referee Domingo Castillo. Time and time again, the impressive Roja would start to build up a head of steam only to have Americano take a cheap step to stay afloat. This worked well to help rehabilitate Roja with the nearly 3,000 in attendance firmly on board with his turn to the light side. We seemed well on track for a triumphant evening for the reborn Roja but with the end seemingly inevitable, Dragon Americano took matters into his own hands, returning from his latest scurry to the outside with a microphone in hand - not that he had anything worthwhile to say (does he ever?) but it made for an excellent impromptu weapon with which to whack Roja over the head leaving Castillo with no choice but to call for the bell and award Roja with a deserved, if somewhat unsatisfactory victory at 10’45 via DQ.
Match Rating: 60

Humberto Tortega: I suspect we haven’t seen the last of this particular rivalry! The first steps on the road to redemption taken by El Hijo de Espada Roja tonight though!
Phoenix III: I’m very happy for him. It takes a big man to admit when he has been on the wrong pathway.
Rafael Ruiz: He didn’t look like much of a winner there. I think Dragon Americano was right about him, the guy has lost his hunger, lost his desire. If you’re not willing to do whatever it takes to win then you have no business in there.
Phoenix III: I suppose you buy into his anti-Mexican rhetoric too? Where are you even from?
Rafael Ruiz: All I’m saying is that a winner is a winner and that unless you pin or submit a guy, it’s not a victory that should satisfy any man worthy of the name.
Humberto Tortega: Okay gentlemen, back to your corners, let’s not get distracted before our next match -  one with our Mexican title up for grabs.

Campeonato de Mexico OLLIE Title Match - Disturbed © w/Julia Alvarez Vs El Pavo Real

The challenger, El Pavo real, was game here, determined to take the next step in his OLLIE career and take the Campeonato de Mexico from the weird grasp of Disturbed. The champion was reeling from the outset, unable to keep with the intensity and desire of El Pavo Real. The experienced, flamboyant Real was precise and effective in his offence and unrelenting in his attack. The audience were firmly on board too, getting behind the challenger. When El Pavo Real started to attack from above it felt as though there could only be one winner here. Disturbed is nothing if not resolute though and he has something else going for him these days too.
Julia Alvarez. Nobody is quite sure where the witchy manager came from or how she persuaded Disturbed to let her represent him but there is no denying her commitment to the role. She clambered to the ring apron while El Pavo Real mounted the top turnbuckle for another assault, taking the attention of both Real and the man in the zebra shirt, Patricio Marcos. Disturbed, with all the precision and emotion of a shark, would take full advantage of the distraction, diving into the ropes and causing Real to crotch himself. From there Alvarez would return to her vigil from ringside and Disturbed would pick apart his foe with a clinical, almost medical precision. This culminated in a Flying Double Stomp, a three count and a successful title defence for Disturbed in 11’12.
Match Rating: 51

Humberto Tortega: The reign of Disturbed continues in a frankly disturbing fashion!
Phoenix III: Humberto! Have you no shame?
Humberto Tortega: What?
Rafael Ruiz: Your parents must be very, very embarrassed by you.
Humberto Tortega: What? I don’t know what is wrong with you guys tonight? If it’s okay with you can we get on with the show?
Rafael Ruiz: Just stop trying to be funny!

Laberinto Jr Vs Silver Tiger

This was another bout featuring two men making their first singles appearance of the year. The veteran Laberinto Jr is always a dangerous proposition and here, against a Silver Tiger fresh off the back of a good performance in the Battle Royal last month, he definitely reminded everyone watching that he is a solid, all-round package who can trouble any opponent. Troubling and taking down, however, are two very different things and, despite his best efforts. Laberinto couldn’t quite pull this Tiger’s teeth. There was a real chemistry between the pair and it absolutely aided this contest as a spectacle but, overall, Silver Tiger was just a little faster, a little sharper, a little more lethal in all that he did and, after taking control definitively around the halfway point, he would press his advantage home step by step, winning the contest in 11’40 after a Silver Tiger Driver. A roar of triumph to the Tiger Gods followed the victory.
Match Rating: 58

Humberto Tortega: An impressive display from Silver Tiger there, he is not a man to be overlooked.
Phoenix III: I’m not completely sure he’s a man at all. There is power in that one and I know not if it is for good or evil.
Rafael Ruiz: You’re absolutely fascinated with silly concepts like good and evil, aren’t you? You’re right to say that Silver Tiger is filled with power and, let’s be real, nothing else matters in the final analysis. Silver Tiger has proven that time and time again.
Humberto Tortega: It will be interesting to see what is next for both those men. Speaking of interesting, our next match will take some beating. There is serious bad blood in this one - Marcos Flores and The Freedom Family are the embodiment of all that is good and noble in Luca Libre. On the other hand… The Council of Decay…
Phoenix III: The Council of Decay are simply wicked.
Rafael Ruiz: Even I will admit that the Council are pretty dark but they’re also very, very good at what they do.
Humberto Tortega: They’re good at being bad!
Phoenix III and Rafael Ruiz sigh deeply, briefly united in their disdain for Tortega’s crimes against wordplay.

Marcos Flores & The Freedom Family (Luis Montero Jr w/Agueda Alonso & Tricolor Jr) Vs Hijo Del Mephisto & Evil Intent (Hellspawn 666 & Slayyer)

This was good. Very good even. This match was full of action with everybody involved setting out to have the best match on the card. The action went back and forth with the six wrestlers all getting a chance to show what they can do. A couple of things were very clear. Hijo Del Mephisto was head and shoulders above all the others and, conversely, Slayyer was the weak link between the ropes here. This was a busy match. The Council of Decay seemed on the cusp of taking the win here only for Agueda Alonso to distract Slayyer when the big man was poised to pin her managerial client Luis Montero Jr. Alonso’s willingness to get involved as closely as she did says volumes for her courage. The tecnico trio came within a heartbeat of victory too as, during one particularly chaotic sequence, a Tricolor Jr cover of Hellspawn 666 was only broken up by the last-ditch interference of Phobia.
Eventually The Council of Decay managed to reassert themselves though, through a combination of brutality and rule breaking. At 12’55 Hijo Del Mephisto would secure the win for his stable, pinning Luis Montero Jr after hitting him with a Satanic Elbow.
Match Rating: 63

Humberto Tortega: That is a statement! The Council of Decay is a faction on the rise!
Rafael Ruiz: I’m not sure anybody can stop them.
Phoenix III: Good men will try!
Humberto Tortega: That will be a difficult act to follow but our Main Event is next and that just might… what’s going on now?

Familiar music hits then and, seemingly to the surprise of the announce team, Campeonata de las Mujures, Celeste Moon makes her way purposefully to the ring and demands a microphone.

1813427933_CelesteMoon.jpg.afd8305ed28165862d255ad87cc76c8d.jpg

Celeste Moon: You all know who I am. Yeah, that’s right, you can boo as much as you want, it changes nothing. I am the most dominant champion in OLLIE. I’ve held this belt for 173 days. I have proven every time I get in the ring that I am the best woman wrestler in Mexico. There is nobody who can stand against me - nobody! And you might think that would earn me some respect but no! Where is my match tonight? Where is my Main Event? I proved at Lucha Libre Battle that there is nobody in all of OLLIE who can do it like I can. Shall I tell you why I’m not booked for a match tonight? There are three reasons. The first is that OLLIE is afraid that if I keep on smashing up challengers like I did poor, brittle, little Mystery Pink they’ll run out of contenders. In fact let’s have a round of applause for Mystery Pink because she certainly can’t clap herself since I broke her arm! Secondly… it's a jealousy thing. Every man in that locker room back there feels threatened by me because I am better than they are. I might be smaller but I move better, I fight better and I damn sure look better! And the last thing, maybe the most important, is that there isn’t a woman back there either who’s got the guts to face me. I understand that but that doesn’t mean I have to…

176587404_ElectricDreamer.jpg.2a019e7bd489274bc02a59f4aeff9fbc.jpg

More music hits and Electric Dreamer emerges at the top of the ramp with a microphone of her own.

Electric Dreamer: The only thing that you are the best at Celeste… is self-promotion! You turned your back on everybody who supported you, on everybody who helped you to get to where you are today. I considered you a friend once. I respected you, as a competitor and as a person. I was wrong. Not to respect your skills, I still do that though I don’t think that breaking the arm of an injured woman is quite the achievement that you do! Where I was wrong though was to not realise earlier what a self-centred, arrogant narcissist you are. I am NOT afraid to face you. In fact… we can do it right now!

Celeste Moon is having none of it, beating a hasty retreat to the crowd as Electric Dreamer runs to the ring before turning back to declare,

Celeste Moon: You’re not going to just walk in here and take a title shot whenever you please. I’m the champion around here. If we fight it will be on my terms, when I agree. But I’ll relish the chance to hurt you, to show all of the OLLIE audience just how overrated you are. So if the OLLIE booking committee agree I’ll face off against you at Dia de los Guerreros.

This was a hot promo from both women, really turning up the intensity.
Angle Rating: 69

Humberto Tortega: Well, how about that! If the powers that be agree (and I see no reason why they won’t) then we have a mouth-watering clash ahead of us next month.
Phoenix III: We still have one of those left tonight too, eh?
Rafael Ruiz: The last stand of Nicolas Lopez… what are we waiting for?
Humberto Tortega: Nothing at all - it is time!

101304803_NicolasLopez.jpg.fdbef400fe83c2decee4a36f10b8ad69.jpgVersus.jpg.b90df6bd6e93d031f7de06d8344d96c7.jpgExtraordinario.jpg.7fb058a20772d9a6b0383198c664077b.jpg

Campeonato de Universal OLLIE Title Match- Nicolas Lopez © Vs Extraordinario Jr

And so it was Main Event time as ‘The Untouchable’ Nicolas Lopez defended his title once more against Extraordinario Jr, the challenger riding a wave of momentum after his Battle Royal victory last month. Their match tonight was anticipated but, disappointing for OLLIE, their chemistry was off and nothing seemed to quite click in the manner that all parties would have liked. There were a lot of plusses here and that shouldn’t be understated by any measure - both men possess charisma and star quality in abundance and the challenger sells superbly too. This was a good match but it was prevented from breaking through by the aforementioned, noticeably poor chemistry between the pair and it paled somewhat in comparison to the Luchadoras promo that preceded it and the opening bout between Mr Lucha III and Blue Phantom.
It was an open contest with both men given the opportunity to shine but, for a finish, Lopez would emerge victorious, making another successful title defence, winning this one in 12’39 with a pinfall after a Lopez Buster.
Match Rating: 64

Humberto Tortega: And the reign of Nicolas Lopez continues!
Phoenix III: The beating heart of OLLIE can not be stopped it seems!
Rafael Ruiz: All hearts can be stopped and our champion can’t be as lucky as that indefinitely. I saw plenty tonight to suggest that the end of the line is closer than Lopez would like.
Humberto Tortega: I think you are a cynical man Mr.Ruiz. A big thank you to everyone who has watched and enjoyed tonight’s show, we will see you all again next month for Dia de los Guerreros!

Really enjoyed this! Great step up in the writing and presentation from show 1, I loved the vibe, and I loved even more that I didn't predict everything correctly! Excited to see Dia de los Guerreros!

Thanks ATA! I really appreciate that particularly as I'm never really sure how much detail is the sweet spot for a show. I'll warn you in advance that I have the third show done as well and I tried something else a little different which you may or may not be so taken with. I do enjoy throwing a bit of announce desk interaction in though - in part because I think it's a good way to drive story narratives but also because I think that the commentary team are a big part of any wrestling show and it's easy to just overlook it in a dynasty. I like trying to create distinct voices for each of them.

On a related note I figured I'd try the 'Month in Mexico' bit too to give a bit more insight into the overall scene nationally. It's all in the details, eh?

Stuck in the middle with you...
Wrestling is funny. Life is funny man. I know I said that I wasn’t somebody who paid a lot of attention to the rating on TEW.com but I guess that sort of goes out the window when you take a position as the booker. So last month we got pipped by EMLL with CILL lagging well behind and, obviously, EILL far enough ahead that we just about see them in the distance if we squint. This month our rating increased marginally for 61 to 63 and EMLL went backwards from 62 to 52 backing up my suspicions that a card with just two matches (one of them a 30 wrestler Battle Royal) is not a great idea (with all due respect to Luis Montero Sr as their booker). CILL on the other hand… bounced from 54 to 66! So we stay second of the three smaller companies for at least one more month.

Overall though I was encouraged. Progress is progress after all and we’re trending the right way in any number of metrics. Our TV audience grew slightly from 88,631 to 90,865 and our live attendance took a decent boost also from 2,391 to 2,998. Our monthly merchandise income climbed from $7,334 to $8,868. Our monthly profit climbed too - from $47,053 in January to $55,504 in February. It was also an opportunity for me to see some of our guys in a real match for the first time (the Battle Royal at my first show didn’t teach me much if I’m honest). There were some people who really stepped up and gave an indication that they’re got a bigger role to play than maybe I initially envisaged and, on the other hand, some others who are maybe on the wrong side of their peak. I still have a good idea of what I want to do for the next two shows with maybe 80% of the card for both OLLIE Dia de los Guerreros and OLLIE LuchaSlam (our biggest show of the year), if not fully nailed down, at least provisionally set even at this stage. Of course, anything can change in this business but I feel it’s best to have some sort of a plan.

A bit of a bromance

I’m still happy with the decision I’ve made, thinking about moving to Mexico full-time for LuchaSlam. This is a good dressing room, full of good people. People like El Pavo Real who recently raised a whole bunch of cash for a suicide prevention charity by selling a load of stuff from his career in an online auction. Classy gesture. People like El Critico and Gabriela Ortega who have started seeing each other. He is one of our veterans and she is a manager without any clients. I’m glad they found each other. They both did their prospects no harm this month either, he got a very enjoyable match out of young Phoenix IV and she proved that she has a lot to offer with a regular interview segment where her excellent speaking skills can be used to benefit multiple people and not just a regular client or two. Two thirds of Galactic Force have also clearly become strong friends too with the bond between Extranjero Loco and Extraordinario Jr very evident to all.

The Tiger has a Phobia...

On a somewhat less positive note, Silver Tiger pulled me aside at the end of the show to tell me that, in his opinion (unsolicited in this case but I’ve always been cursed with the sort of demeanour that people feel they can open up to), “Phobia has poor ring psychology, the kid is probably not worth keeping around.” I like Phobia and he’s only 25 so, while we do probably have a bigger roster than we strictly need at the moment, I’m in no rush to follow through on that suggestion.

Borrrrrrn in the USAAAAAA!

Interesting news from back home too with the launch of the Wrestleworld subscription service. Puerto Rico’s FCW is the first company to sign up. I know that not everyone agrees but I think that it’s going to be an absolute godsend for indie wrestling and a development that, had it happened a few years earlier, might have saved AAA and 4C. The big boys are in their own war and don’t care about us. Cameron Vessey is the latest to follow the dollars to Florida and USPW, back on American soil after almost 7 years in Canada. I don’t think he’ll be the last to move either. Time will tell. I doubt USPW are spending too much time thinking about us but I’m just stoked to be back in the business proper again. It’s been a wild ride to get here man but I’m not going to stop chasing the dream just yet. I don’t really have long-term goals here yet (though I have an idea for a potential game changer, stick with us and maybe it will come to pass) but in the short-term I’d settle for breaking 3,000 on the live attendance and (I hate myself for this) beating both CILL and EMLL in the monthly TEW.com dogfight. Maybe in March…

Until next time, keep your eyes on the horizon...

Los Nuevos Phoenix (Phoenix II & Phoenix IV) Vs Amo Del Gato & El Critico

At the last show, OLLIE Eternal War, we saw the veteran El Critico overcome the rising talent that is Phoenix IV, albeit with the aid of a low blow en route to a barely deserved submission victory. The finish was made even more controversial when El Critico refused to release the hold and only the intervention of Phoenix II saved the youngster from serious injury. The resultant war of words and bad blood brings us to this match with Los Nuevos Phoenix aiming to gain some righteous revenge against El Critico, who will be seconded in this one by the devious Amo Del Gato. This pair had a seven-month reign as Campeonatos de Trios alongside current OLLIE Colour Commentator Rafael Ruiz back in 2011. If any of that chemistry remains it might be enough to sway the outcome here.

Campeonato de las Mujeres - Celeste Moon © Vs Electric Dreamer

Celeste Moon took no prisoners in her unscheduled promo last month, clearly unconcerned with making enemies. She took aim at, it felt like, everybody in OLLIE. We are a long, long way from her first run as champion, back in 2013, when she was still known as Aguila Azul Celeste and committed to doing things the right way. Electric Dreamer lamented this in her rebuttal, confessing that she had considered Moon a friend and was hurt by the change of approach. Dreamer has no shortage of ambition and drive herself and this will surely be the biggest challenge faced yet by Celeste Moon in her current reign. It will be crucial too that Dreamer doesn’t allow nostalgia to cloud her focus in this one, Moon has proven to be a vicious rudo and would relish the opportunity to break Electric Dreamer’s arm too.

Campeonatos de Trios - El Pavo Real & The Canadian Daredevils (Jayson Van Pelt & Kamikaze) Vs Payaso Junior & Coulrophobia (Hellech & Pierrot)

The Campeonatos de Trios titles have had a rough few years and are currently a long way from the valued prize that they once were. The whispers emerging from OLLIE suggest that the creative team want to address that this year and restore some prestige. The counterargument to this is that this will be the first time we’ve seen the titles defended in 2020. The current holders are the flamboyant El Pavo Real and the energetic duo of Jayson Van Pelt and Kamikaze, a pair collectively known as The Canadian Daredevils. There’s a sense that this trio are still somewhat under-rated here in OLLIE. Real is a former, multiple time World Champion in CILL, JVP has held championships in Japan and Mexico as well as his native Canada and Kamikaze, in addition to being as flashy a wrestler as anyone, in any promotion, in the world is a current tag-team champion in ACPW in Canada as well as holding this title. It’s debatable though if all these accomplishments will mean anything to their opponents in this one, the sinister, sadistic Psycho Circus. There are few tag teams in wrestling today to match Hellech and Pierrot (Coulrophobia) for accomplishments but there’s a real sense that titles and awards mean nothing to the twisted twosome. Now, aligned with Payaso Jr (and, potentially, with Bizarro lurking at ringside as well), they seem poised to unleash their plot of torment upon any who stand before them. If they collect titles along the way, that will be a secondary benefit.

Marcos Flores Vs Hellspawn 666

The Council of Decay picked up an emphatic win at Eternal War against Marcos Flores and The Freedom Family, conclusively winning their feud. In the embers of that we now see Marcos Flores taking on one half of Evil Intent - Hellspawn 666. For Flores this will be viewed as a chance to rebuild and refocus on fresh challenges as we go into the next phase of the year. Hellspawn 666, on the other hand, will see opportunity here to heap further humiliation upon the distinguished Flores as well as to stake his own claim for advancement in the ranks of both The Council of Decay and the OLLIE roster overall.

Nicolas Lopez did enough to retain his title in a hard-fought battle against Extraordinario Jr last time out. They’ll come face to face again at Dia de los Guerreros but this time in Trios action. The Campeonato de Universal champion will be backed up by The Freedom Family, aiming to bounce back from being on the wrong side of a Trios defeat at the previous show. Galactic Force will be on the opposite side of the ring with the Campeonatos de Parejas - Space Invaders - and their leader, Extraordinario Jr, sure that they have what it takes to make a massive statement of intent.

Ursula Saez Vs Queen Amazon

The two powerhouses of the Luchadora division will also clash. Queen Amazon, a 4-time champion in OLLIE already, has gone 2-0 so far this year but both those matches were tag team affairs. Ursula Saez was on the losing side in both of those matches but relishes the opportunity to get her hands on the Queen in a one-on-one setting, recognising that a win would instantly lift her career to a whole new level. Queen Amazon will see this match as a gift-wrapped present to get her back into the Campeonata de las Mujeres title picture.

El Hijo de Espada Roja Vs Dragon Americano - NO DQ

This pair were both eager to sign up for this rematch following a bad-tempered collision with a finish that was anything but decisive at the last OLLIE show. These former partners are getting increasingly aggressive in their interactions with each other. At the time of publishing this article there were unconfirmed suggestions that we would see a stipulation added to this match - potentially that this will be contested under no DQ rules - this might be the only way to make this a potentially viable contest with a conclusive ending.

Laberinto Jr Vs Mr Lucha III

Laberinto Jr and Mr Lucha III have, between them, spent 25 years in OLLIE. This quarter century has seen the men earn plenty of championship gold too - 5 runs as Campeonato de Mexico, 4 as Campeonatos de Parejas and an additional 3 as Campeonatos de Trios. Neither man has ever reached the top of the OLLIE mountain - the Campeonato de Universal OLLIE. Both have aspirations to but this year the pair had contrasting fortunes at Eternal War - Mr Lucha defeating Blue Phantom by countout (albeit with a very poor grace) while Laberinto Jr came up short against Silver Tiger. He’ll be determined to start his resurgence here but will need to bring his A-game against a man who is clearly being driven by frustration and bitterness.

The Wannadies (Astro & Fuego Fantastico) Vs The American Cobras (Marvel Malloy & Storm Spillane)

The Wannadies will make their debut in front of a television audience and the two young graduates of the Lucha Libre de Phoenix training facility couldn’t have picked a much tougher opponent that the vastly decorated, heavily experienced, current COTT Tag Team Champions, Marvel Malloy and Storm Spillane, The American Cobras. Astro and Fuega Fantastico are both sparkling prospects, well capable of treading that very fine line between bravery and recklessness. The duo are hungry to prove themselves and to progress as quickly as they can and willing to challenge anybody. Malloy and Spillane are a big test for the top teams in the world, let alone a pair of veritable rookies. If The Wannadies can pull this off though… it would be an upset to put them on the map.

Blue Phantom Vs Hijo Del Mephisto

Two men with very different outlooks on life will collide in this one. Blue Phantom is a mysterious, charismatic luchador who has seemed on the edge of a breakout for some time now. If anyone is going to be capable of resisting the dark, psychotic mind games of Hijo Del Mephisto it just might be the unflappable Blue Phantom. Mephisto though, is a man with his eyes on a prize that most of us can’t even fathom. As far as he’s concerned, NOBODY can resist him indefinitely and this is just another step as he continues to plot how best to drag the whole of OLLIE into hell.

Some of Remmy's thoughts from just before the show

A Thursday night in March is the slightly unorthodox setting for my third show in Mexico - OLLIE Dia De Los Guerreros. I’m in a good mood backstage before the show and that’s pretty indicative of the prevailing mood. I’d like to think that the catering I laid on has something to do with that but this is, for the most part, a nice group of people and I’m enjoying my trips down here. I’m still giving some thought to moving down here permanently.

JVP - keeps his Xbox in Mexico now

One man who has done just that is Jason Van Pelt. I’m going to be staying with him after the show tonight in the apartment he's been renting since his relocation from Canada. JVP is a good dude who just turns up, gets on with the job and doesn’t make a fuss. He’s still only 31 and I can easily understand why he’s getting booked in Canada and Japan as well as here.

The burgeoning Wrestleworld empire

Two others who have a bit of a pep in their step today are Mr Lucha III and our women’s champion Celeste Moon. They both requested pay increases since our last show and I was happy to accommodate them. We’re in a good place and it makes sense to me to keep the guys happy where possible. Wrestleworld is taking off in a big way with GSW, MAW, NYCW, ACPW, IPW, QAW, CZCW and PSW all following FCW in signing up with the new streaming service so for us to remain an attractive option we’ll need to work to keep our team satisfied. It’s with one eye on this too that we’ve improved our broadcast quality and we’ve now hired an in-house team to handle that going forwards. It’s increased our costs certainly, but I want to create some separation from EMLL in particular.

Lucha Libre Ladies

All of which brings us back to tonight before the show. Catalina Vazquez is back having signed a deal with us, another delightful people person with immense potential being added to our luchadora ranks. Electric Dreamer has been speaking very well of me, both online and in the locker room and I make sure to thank her for that. She’s a hell of a talent too. While I’m over with the girls I also practise my rather remedial Spanish to flirt with Agueda Alonso, the stunningly beautiful manager of Luis Montero Jr. She laughs, lights another cigarette and sends me on my way with a wink. We’ve got a pretty stacked card tonight and, almost before anyone realises it, it’s time to kick things off.

The Wannadies (Astro & Fuego Fantastico) Vs The American Cobras (Marvel Malloy & Storm Spillane) w/Emilia Reyes

The American Cobras defeated The Wannadies in 6’16 when Marvel Malloy pinned Astro with a Cobra Strike.
Plancha says: A short bout designed to get The American Cobras going here in OLLIE in 2020. Malloy and Spillane have a chemistry as a pair that would be the envy of any tag team in the world and they worked well and effectively here. The pair of youngsters facing them, The Wannadies, are very raw and, frankly, looked it in their televised debut. There’s clearly no shortage of potential though in Astro and Fuego Fantastico. They were both suplexed through tables at ringside at the end of this one which was an impressive double bump to open the show (though Astro’s selling wasn’t impressive). Of more concern will be the injury that Astro picked up, reportedly suffering from chronic upper back pain in the locker room after the match. This, while serving a purpose, was noticeably worse than either of the matches on the preshow.

Marcos Flores Vs Hellspawn 666

Marcos Flores defeated Hellspawn 666 in 8’48 by pinfall with a Flores Heaven Elbow.
Plancha says: After coming out on the wrong end of a defeat against The Council of Decay at the last show this was about rebuilding Marcos Flores. For Hellspawn 666, recognised mostly as a tag team wrestler at this juncture in his career, the thinking will have been that the loss won’t hurt him much. Flores has been relatively consistent in his output in 2020 so far and, based upon this, there’s every reason to believe that he will have plenty to offer going forwards. This was pretty straightforward but it did what it needed to.

Blue Phantom Vs Hijo Del Mephisto

Hijo Del Mephisto defeated Blue Phantom in 6’15 by pinfall with a Satanic Elbow.
Plancha says: Hijo Del Mephisto was excellent here, looking every inch the vindictive Rudo and helping to elevate this match to a quality above anything else we’d seen tonight so far. He controlled the bout with Blue Phantom unable to match him (both inside and out of the confines of kayfabe). Like the previous matches on this show, this was pretty straightforward and conclusive but this was an extremely enjoyable clash for the short time it lasted - at the time that it happened it was the second highest ranked match of the year thus far for OLLIE.

Ursula Saez Vs Queen Amazon

Queen Amazon defeated Ursula Saez in 8’13 by pinfall with an Amazonian Powerbomb.
Plancha says: This pair, the powerhouses of the Luchadora division, had collided in tag team action already this year and this was touted as their big singles collision. In practice it wasn’t as even as that with Queen Amazon, perhaps somewhat predictably, having too much for her less experienced opponent and giving a prescient reminder of just what she can do, scooping Saez up with some ease to plant her with a big Amazonian Powerbomb.

Los Nuevos Phoenix (Phoenix II & Phoenix IV) Vs Amo Del Gato & El Critico

Los Nuevos Phoenix defeated Amo Del Gato & El Critico in 9’38 by pinfall when Phoenix IV pinned Amo Del Gato with a fast roll up.
Plancha says: Phoenix IV got the rub of the win in this one, Amo Del Gato was protected somewhat by the fast roll up finish and, as the core members of the feud, Phoenix II and El Critico were kept out of the conclusion of this one, presumably with one eye on a blow off match at the end of this storyline. So far, so good then. It has to be noted though that Phoenix II was very much the weak link here, noticeably off the pace compared to each of the other three. Of the other competitors, Phoenix IV gave a reminder that he is very much a developing talent with a lot of upsides, El Critico showed that he can still go despite his advancing years and Amo Del Gato’s showing should ensure that OLLIE find more for him to do in the near future as well. Time will tell how the rivalry between El Critico and the two Phoenix will play out from here - tonight was a reasonable, if not exactly stellar, addition to their ongoing efforts.

El Hijo de Espada Roja Vs Dragon Americano

Dragon Americano defeated El Hijo de Espada Rojo in 9’40 by pinfall following interference by Disturbed.
Plancha says: This was a rematch from OLLIE Eternal War - this time with a no DQ stipulation attached. Much has been made of the history between the pair, in the light of Rojo’s conversion to the Tecnico cause, particularly when they formed two thirds of the Campeonatos de Trios. It was perhaps inevitable then that the third member of that title holding unit, current Campeonato de Mexico, Disturbed, would involve himself in this too. He would prove doubly significant here, first in laying out Roja with an elbow to the back of the head, allowing Dragon to win the match and tie up his series with Roja 1-1.

Disturbed.jpg.7e28b734a8cfc3ccd809c353f1693237.jpg371317688_JuliaAlvarez.jpg.dd777f7b7c2bd225188d27b33970ef34.jpg

In the aftermath of the match things would take another twist when the silent Disturbed, egged on by his shrieking manager Julia Alvarez, would turn his sadistic streak upon Dragon Americano, laying him out too before leaving, seemingly remorseless, as both his former allies lay prone behind him. The match was a success for OLLIE, the beatdown that followed noticeably less so.

Campeonatos de Trios - El Pavo Real & The Canadian Daredevils (Jayson Van Pelt & Kamikaze) Vs Payaso Junior & Coulrophobia (Hellech & Pierrot)

Psycho Circus (Payaso, Hellech & Pierrot) defeated El Pavo Real and The Canadian Daredevils in 10:31 when Payaso pinned El Pavo Real with a Clown Cradle. During the match we also had Bizarro distract El Pavo Real. Payaso Junior and Coulrophobia win the Campeonatos de Trios OLLIE titles.
Plancha says: The first title change of the Remmy Skye era in OLLIE occurred here. All six of these men brought their A-game and there was very little to be critical of. Neither The Canadian Daredevils or Coulrophobia are particularly over yet but, if they continue to put on matches as solid as this one, that will go a long way towards addressing that small concern and they could be well poised to make inroads. It was also a breakout performance of sorts for Payaso Jr. The man long dubbed the most talented unsigned wrestler in Mexico shaded this one in terms of performance.

Bizarro.jpg.602b80b6d25125af1e9e0e3ce5c6a2e2.jpg

The match itself was more functional than spectacular, particularly taking into account how flashy some of these guys can be but it more than ticked the boxes expected of it. It was open throughout with plenty of quick covers. Bizarro would prove crucial to the finish, distracting El Pavo Real and allowing Payaso to land the Clown Cradle and the three count for his team. It’s been a quietly impressive beginning in OLLIE for Payaso and, indeed, Psycho Circus.
It will be interesting now to see where these teams go next. Psycho Circus have been chosen to hold the trios titles at a time when there will apparently be moves made to reinvigorate that division. The Canadian Daredevils and El Pavo Real? Only time will tell if their union continues or if they will now shift focus.

Mr Lucha III cuts a promo before his match with Laberintero Jr

Plancha says: This. Was. Excellent. Far be it for me to tell Remmy Skye and OLLIE how to book their show but it’s hard to see why they wouldn’t be getting ready to strap a rocket to this man based on his showings this year. He was brilliant here as the embittered rudo, furious at the perceived affront to his dignity that was his being placed in the opening match at the last show. He was also scathing here of the mockery being made of the true traditions of Lucha Libre, stating that he, and he alone, was the only person in all of OLLIE who believed in honouring the old ways. “Too many charlatans here are content to pay lip service to the real majesty of lucha libre, to bend it to their own ends - men like Laberintero Jr!”

Laberintero Jr Vs Mr Lucha III

Mr Lucha III defeated Laberintero Jr in 5:52 by pinfall with a Third Strike.
Plancha says: The match didn’t quite live up to the promo that preceded it. It was still good with Mr Lucha III both carrying and dominating proceedings on his way to a rather facile victory that establishes him as a rudo who can win decisively too, he’s more than just big chatter. There seems no doubt that he will gate-crash the main event scene over the next few months but the very next steps remain somewhat uncertain. Laberintero may have to try and strike forward from the midcard but, if anything is to be taken away from this show, it’s that OLLIE have a real potential breakout star on their hands in Mr Lucha III. This match is not likely to be one that will end up on his highlight reel but it could well be remembered as the night that he proved that his talent can not be overlooked.

Agueda Alonso shoots t-shirts

In a quick interlude before the semi-main commenced Agueda Alonso used a t-shirt gun to fire some freebies into the crowd.
Plancha says: This was an experiment in something different for OLLIE. Ahead of her managerial duties Alonso was pressed into service here - utilising her undeniable beauty to bolster some crowd engagement and get some OLLIE merchandise out there all at the same time. Truthfully… this didn’t really land. The crowd, OLLIE’s biggest in some time, are a bit more traditional in mentality and the cavorting, laced with a sexual under-tone as it was, failed to hit the mark. I don’t think we’ll see this sort of thing again. In a different arena, this would have been different.

Nicolas Lopez & The Freedom Family (Luis Montero Jr & Tricolor Jr) Vs Extraordinario Jr & Space Invaders (Cosmic Rider & Extranjero Loco)

Nicolas Lopez and The Freedom Family defeated Galactic Force in 11’35 when Nicolas Lopez pinned Extranjero Loco with a Lopez Buster.
In terms of in-ring work, Extraordinario Jr was head and shoulders above everyone else.
Plancha says: This was the best match yet since Remmy Skye took the book in OLLIE and fitting finale to the feud between Nicolas Lopes and Galactic Force. The six men involved can all take pride in the role they played in this engrossing contest, one which gripped the 3,272 people in attendance in Leon. Special praise though has to be afforded to Extraordinario Jr though - everything that he did tonight looked first rate and he is another who we here at Lucha Web! expect to feature prominently as OLLIE move through 2020. The Freedom Family did themselves no harm here either and now look handily placed to challenge Space Invaders for their Campeonatos de Parejas.

Campeonato de las Mujeres - Celeste Moon © Vs Electric Dreamer

Celeste Moon drew with Electric Dreamer in 15’08 when the match descended into chaos after Queen Amazon got involved.
Plancha says: The good news is that they trusted the luchadoras to main event the show and, objectively speaking, Celeste Moon, Electric Dreamer and (when she got involved) Queen Amazon didn’t do much wrong. The issue, and the ladies can’t be blamed for this, is that the crowd were rabid at this point and their quarter hour, technical masterpiece was really poorly placed. It was not the right time to be feeding the audience this and the reception suffered as a result.

2097674736_QueenAmazon.jpg.429feab860b866c84ec8f728a28b44e6.jpg

Overall though, while that is definitely a misstep for OLLIE to avoid suffering again, in terms of the bigger picture it sets us up well for what is presumably an inevitability now at next month’s OLLIE Luchaslam - a three way dance for the Campeonato de las Mujeres in which Celeste Moon will have to defend against both Electric Dreamer and Queen Amazon. Amazon was left standing tall to end this match, and this show, as OLLIE continue to find their feet in this new era for them.

OOC: So another show on the books - one where I tried a different method of coverage than my usual - replacing the snippets of commentary with the insights of Lucha Web! and their boy Plancha (and I have to say that I really like the Lucha Web! logo I threw together). I'd love a bit of feedback from anybody in terms of how they compare. Personally, I'm not sure that it landed and, while there is more work involved for me in writing up the 'commentary reports', I might save Plancha for minor shows and general reports going forwards (small spoiler though, the next show is a small show and it's already written up using the fuller report style). I've deliberately tried to make the format a bit loose here too, I think that sort of vaguely messy, erratic approach mirrors the personality of my Remmy Skye and that it's a good way to instil the whole piece with his 'voice'. I still feel as though I (and, I guess, Skye) am just getting used to OLLIE but there are some plans afoot to make some real changes in the aftermath of the next two shows - the first, already written, the last-minute addition that I've named Popup Lucha (a name that I'm very amused with too) and the second (booked but not played out) the big one - the season finale LuchaSlam and this one all the more noteworthy as it's the landmark LuchaSlam XXV. I'm enjoying this though, immensely, and I expect to have a little more time to devote to it over the next few weeks so, all going well, you might get a little more output from me in the near future.

PS) Many thanks to those who nominated this diary for C-verse Diary of the Month - much, much appreciated!

Remmy Skye: Believes that 'Son of a Beach' would be a great nickname

I decided to stay in Mexico for a few days after the show. I could use the break and, whisper it quietly, I’m thinking about making the move down here myself. Jayson Van Pelt (and now Storm Spillane as well) have already upped sticks and are living in the same apartment complex here. That’s where I find myself on Sunday night, sprawled on the couch waiting for a dodgy stream of TCW’s Battleground III to begin. All the matches are 4-v-4 so it’s not a million miles from Night of the Trios, our scheduled show in July. That seems a long way off still if I’m honest.

553795942_JaysonVanPelt.jpg.1f0432446024d3b4213eaebfedc5f602.jpg1456066564_StormSpillane.jpg.26109509f4c977a69a109b070d2ae326.jpg
Jayson and Storm live in the same building, not the same apartment -this is for the best

For now, despite the semi-disaster that was our Main Event, I’m still basking in the relative comfort of the belief that we’re on the right track here. At the very least our balance sheet agrees. We earned another $50,276 in March which means we have a healthy bank balance of a little over a quarter of a million dollars. Truth be told I probably need to start figuring out a way of spending a little more. I’m pondering the pros and cons of embarking on at least a cold war against EMLL while JVP good-naturedly ribs Storm about The American Cobras losing the COTT Tag Team titles. In my considered opinion, he’s needlessly poking a bear with a stick because Storm can be prickly enough about things like that.

IPW.jpg.59a01580f68a52db876e2af310cbe2db.jpg1262935008_T-BoneBright.jpg.096823f07868e23b2cd01788e212b58f.jpgTCW.jpg.c5ad3b53b7a2bf413607a3adf3bf5733.jpg
T-Bone Bright is on the rise

I’m torn from weighing up who would win a shoot fight between the pair (and who from EMLL I’d consider poaching if it comes to it) by the arrival of, firstly a bunch of pizzas, and later a handful of others from the roster. In no time at all there’s seven of us sitting around the living room of JVP’s apartment, munching on the food and watching the team of One Man Army, Bart Biggins, Elliot Thomas and T-Bone Bright winning the opening match on the show. I saw a fair bit of T-Bone when he was breaking through in Cali with IPW and he always seemed a decent kid. To see him shining on such a big stage, at just 30 years old, it’s… well, to be totally honest, it’s a bit conflicting. Like 95% satisfaction at a guy getting his just reward to 5% regret that it’s not me. I’m pretty sure that the same is true of most everyone else in the room too, that it’s part of the DNA of a pro wrestler.

The PPV Crew

The others who have turned up are, for the most part, a fairly understandable bunch. Disturbed (“Call me Tony today, eh boss?” he greets me, “Deal, if you don’t call me boss again!”) and Pierrot are gringos, just like Jayson, Storm and myself. Pierrot has also brought along his Psycho Circus stablemate, the irrepressible newcomer Payaso Jr. I like Payaso, everyone does I think, he’s never short of a word on any subject and equally happy to chat in English or Spanish. He’s earned his shot with us. The last person to come is Agueda Alonso. Her English is almost as limited as my Spanish but she remains so beautiful that I’m not sure how much sense I’d be able to make in a conversation anyway so maybe that’s for the best. Pierrot sees my gaze lingering on her for a moment and says, quietly to give him his due, “you should see her modelling shots! Unbelievable bro!” I give a rueful grin, make a mental note to google those later, take another slice of pizza and a swig of cold beer and switch my focus back to the screen. It’s a good evening with good people (and pizza) watching a decent show. A good time all round. I’m a long way from Georgia, a long way from California but, you know something, this might be a place where I can find my place again. I still wish it was closer to the ocean though!

Luis Montero Jr Vs Marcos Flores Vs Hijo Del Mephisto Vs Silver Tiger - Fatal Four Way Number One Contender’s Match for Campeonato de Universal

As we close in on the biggest show of the year for OLLIE - Luchaslam XXV - later this month, the chief order of business for Popup Lucha will be to crown a number one contender for Nicolas Lopez’ Campeonato de Universal title. This fatal four way match will give each of these four men an opportunity to earn a crack at the biggest prize on the OLLIE stage.
Luis Montero Jr has held every other prize offered by Mexico’s oldest wrestling promotion. Seen only in tag team action so far this year he’s not shy about wanting to make the most of this chance to add another chapter to the legacy of his (and his family’s) career.
Marcos Flores has been Campeonato de Universal OLLIE no less than six times! ‘The King of Leon’ is not yet willing to cede ground in his battle against Father Time or anybody he sets foot in a wrestling ring with. A dominant victory over Hellspawn 666 at Dia De Los Guerreros served as a pointed reminder of just how effective this veteran still is. He’s showing no signs of slowing down at all and has been a regular on the independent circuit this year too.
Hijo Del Mephisto, the leader of The Council of Decay, is a two-time former Campeonato de Universal himself as well as a multi-time title holder in MPWF. He has impressed so far this year, looking a dangerous, unpredictable force in all of his appearances to date, most recently in a decisive victory against Blue Phantom last time out. A man who seeks to live up to his Evil Incarnate moniker every time he steps between the ropes, only a fool would doubt his proclivity for inflicting pain.
Silver Tiger completes the quartet of competitors - in addition to holding every title on offer in OLLIE (including two runs as Campeonato de Universal) - he won the Sam Keith Classic in 2015 - teaming with Hijo Del Mephisto. Silver Tiger, the self-proclaimed totem of the Tiger God, is impossible to discount here too. A man capable of adjusting his approach to any opponent he might just be the favourite for this one. Whoever comes out on top will then turn their sights on Nicolas Lopez.

Catalina Vazquez Vs La Hija Del Diablo

Catalina Vazquez will make her return to an OLLIE ring at Popup Lucha too, having signed a permanent contract after making an appearance on loan from CILL on the pre-show at Eternal War. The likeable underdog, still only 26, has long been marked out as one to watch, with a very promising future ahead of her. This match will give us some indication if that future has arrived. La Hija Del Diablo will not make it easy though. The speedy Luchadora may be slightly overshadowed by her tag team partner Queen Amazon at times but that is unfair to an undoubtedly talented worker in her own right. La Hija, just 28 years old herself, possesses all of the tools to get back to a place where she can challenge for championship gold again and will view Vazquez as a stepping stone.

Remmy Skye Vs Pierrot

Remmy Skye’s appearances for OLLIE have so far been limited to pre-shows though it is worth noting that the former CZCW standout has gone 3-0 in those matches. The television audience will get their first look at the man known as ‘Psyche Out’ at Popup Lucha. In the opposite corner will be one third of the current Campeonatos de Trios, the silent member of Psycho Circus, the inscrutable but insane Pierrot. Behind the ghoulish mask is a very capable fighter however, one who combines power and speed in a manner that few can match. Given the somewhat unorthodox approach of both these men, it’s anyone’s guess to see how this one will unfold.

El Hijo de Espada Roja Vs Amo Del Gato

Both these men will be looking to bounce back from defeat at Dia De Los Guerreros. El Hijo de Espada Roja fell victim to a rampaging Disturbed in his clash with Dragon Americano. He has at least one eye on both those men - both former partners of his - but would do well not to look too far ahead of his opponent here. Amo Del Gato was embarrassed to be the one pinned when his pairing with El Critico came up short against Los Nuevos Phoenix. Del Gato’s performance though certainly caught the eye and he will see this as an opportunity to add himself to the mix for the Campeonato de Mexico title that he has held once before.

Campeonato de las Mujeres title match - Celeste Moon © Vs Electric Dreamer Vs Amazon Queen

The Campeonato de las Mujeres title is now confirmed to be defended in Triple Threat action at Luchaslam XXV. The current champion, Celeste Moon, and Electric Dreamer met at Dia De Los Guerreros. They were both very much in the competition when Amazon Queen somewhat gatecrashed the party, laying waste to all before her. As a result, all three will now collide, with the top Luchadora title in Mexico the prize on offer. Moon has been an impressive champion so far, adding a nasty streak to her always technically excellent fundamentals, in her third run with the belt. Electric Dreamer is also a three-time former champion and she appears to be right on the cusp of being a true superstar. Amazon Queen has been on an absolute tear as well so far this year, unbeaten in competition and decimating her opponents. You could make a case for any one of these talented women as favourite and it will be an absolutely fascinating, highly anticipated match.

Phoenix II Vs El Critico

The seeds leading to this increasingly acrimonious showdown were sown in February, at Eternal War, in a clash between the veteran El Critico and the rapidly rising star Phoenix IV. El Critico would win the match but was pushed all the way and seemed to take this as a personal insult. He continued his assault after the match, attempting to grievously injure his young opponent and was only run off by the intervention of Phoenix II. Last month the tensions were only ramped up with the two Phoenix, now dubbed Los Nuevos Phoenix, gaining a measure of revenge by winning a tag team match against El Critico and Amo Del Gato. El Critico has made much of the fact that he was not pinned however. The former two-time Campeonato de Universal is adamant that he has nothing to fear from any man, let alone Phoenix II. For Phoenix II, this match is about defending the honour of the Phoenix legacy upon which OLLIE has thrived and avenging the needless attack meted out to their youngest member.

Campeonato de Mexico title match - Disturbed © Vs Dragon Americano Vs El Hijo de Espado Roja

Between January and November of 2017 the team of Disturbed, Dragon Americano and El Hijo de Espada Roja held the Campeonatos de Trios titles. In the two and a half years or so since then a lot has changed. For Dragon Americano perhaps things have changed the least with the brash, smug, American Rudo remaining a consistently vocal critic of, well, everything really. He is fuelled by American arrogance and swagger. El Hijo de Espado Roja is a man transformed in 2020, having seemingly turned his back on his rule-breaking past and seeking redemption in the form of the Campeonato de Mexico. Now more humble, more likeable and more willing to put in the hard work than ever before he may need to reach new heights if he is to come out on top. The wild card in all of this, of course, is the defending champion - Disturbed. His actions at the end of the Dragon/Espado Roja clash at Dia De Los Guerreros were testament to this. The attack on Roja made sense in some regards but any thoughts that he was aligning himself with Dragon Americano were put to bed in moments when he also decimated him in the aftermath of the match. With all of this going on, the sinister, shrieking figure of Julia Alvarez was hovering - Disturbed has always been a threat - with Alvarez at the controls his innate brutality has only been amplified. The only thing to be expected from here is the unexpected.

OLLIE Popup Lucha Prediction Card
1. Luis Montero Jr Vs Marcos Flores Vs Hijo Del Mephisto Vs Silver Tiger - Fatal Four Way Number One Contender’s Match for Campeonato de Universal

I think HDM and Marcos have their blow-off soon so they can't win. Obviously, they could win and then get the title win stolen from their feud opponent, but Silver Tiger is good enough to have a great LuchaSlam main event.
2. Catalina Vazquez Vs La Hija Del Diablo

Why not build a nice secondary babyface for the luchadoras division? Although Hija Del Diablo is pretty good in her own right.
3. Remmy Skye Vs Pierrot

I'd normally have Remmy lose this one, but Pierrot is part of a trio so he can afford to take an L. As you noted in the preview though, he's an awesome talent.
4. El Hijo de Espada Roja Vs Amo Del Gato

I'm a big Hijo de Espada Roja fan, Amo Del Gato isn't doing much right now.

OLLIE Popup Lucha Prediction Card

1. Luis Montero Jr Vs Marcos Flores Vs Hijo Del Mephisto Vs Silver Tiger - Fatal Four Way Number One Contender’s Match for Campeonato de Universal

I think this is the last opportunity to have the two most decorated stars in OLLIE history go head to head in the main event of the company's biggest event. The fact they are frequent tag team partners and have an intertwined history helps too so I can't look past the dream match of Lopez Vs Flores.

2. Catalina Vazquez Vs La Hija Del Diablo

Queen Amazon has forced her way into the top of the luchadora division and I think Diablo gets closer to following her here. I like Vazquez a lot but her time is the future, whereas Diablo is very close to becoming the 'now'.

3. Remmy Skye Vs Pierrot

Skye needs to get established on screen with a win on the main card. Pierrot is a wise and safe choice to put him over as he's a tag team wrestler and one third of the Trios champions, so he can very much take the loss and move on without much problem.

4. El Hijo de Espada Roja Vs Amo Del Gato

This was the toughest match for me to predict until the announcement of the 3 Way Campionato de Mexico title match at LuchaSlam. Roja needs the win to go into that match as a credible threat to Disturbed's title reign, whereas Del Gato is rather directionless at present. The only way Del Gato beats Roja is if he's added to the title match as a result of said victory, but I still think Roja gets the W here.
