Pittsburgh Steel Wrestling presents...

HIGHWAY TO HELL
Saturday, Week 2, February 2008 - NO STOP SIGNS
Pittsburgh, PA
Attendance - 738 Fans

We’re live from Pittsburgh, PA for the second PSW branded show - Highway to Hell! For the benefit of those who’ve bought this one on DVD or VHS, “The Voice of Pittsburgh” Mitch Naess runs down the card and tells viewers to prepare for the continuation of the Hardcore Revolution.

Singles Match
Bad Bruce vs. New York Red

For those who don’t know him, Bad Bruce is “Untameable” Danny Bruce”, who spent more than a decade working as a lower mid carder with SWF. He was released in August 2007 after appearing sparingly in losing efforts, though his last recorded match was a dark win over Colin Kennedy at Master of Puppets.

His opponent here is former SCCW mid carder New York Red - a skinny brawler who seems to be trying to play fan favourite in PSW, despite spending most of his career as a smug heel.

Unsurprisingly, this isn’t a great match. Despite his gimmick of being quick to anger, Bruce isn’t a natural brawler, while Red doesn’t offer much either. The result isn’t particularly watchable, although Bruce does well to get some heat on him from the crowd after refusing to take advantage of a couple of clear pinfall attempts.

He eventually finishes Red with a top rope assisted DDT onto a chair at 5:55.

REVIEW: Not much to this one and a little long, although Bruce showed some good character work. He could have a future here. [30]

After the bout, Bruce takes a microphone and starts running down New York Red - and the crowd. It’s a little difficult to understand - he’s out of breath for most of the promo - but there’s a few nice barbs at the crowd.

Ultimately, he promises to bring some "mayhem" to Pittsburgh before abruptly leaving the ring.

Tigre Salvaje.jpg Velocidad.jpg

Two out of Three Falls Match
Tigre Salvaje, Jr. vs. Velocidad

This is an interesting change of pace for the Pittsburgh promotion, as two highly rated young luchadors do battle. Clad in his tiger printed mask, Tigre Salvaje, Jr. is a second generation star and plays the role of rudo here. His opponent is the fan favourite Velocidad - also just 21 years of age who most recently put on a classic performance in SOTBPW against Axxis Jr.

The match here is two out of three falls and it is unsurprisingly ultra fast paced. The Savage Tiger isn’t afraid to bend the rules to suit him, and that helps him to the first fall as he nails a hurricanarana and holds onto the ropes for a three count. Velocidad soon fights back, and he incorporates a bit of hardcore into his repertoire as he lands a dropkick into a steel chair to level the match at 1-1.

Despite both men taking some damage, there is absolutely no slowing down as they exchange some exciting luchador moves which get the crowd excited. Ultimately, it’s Velocidad who secures the decisive third fall - landing a pile driver onto the steel chair and then going to the top rope for a splash for the pin at 10:30.

REVIEW: This was action packed, but Velocidad was the real star here. The crowd was surprisingly subdued - probably because they haven’t seen either man in action before - but they started to get more vocal towards the end. [41]

Three-Way Tag Team Elimination Match
The Latino Kingz (Hector Galindo & Rudy Velasquez) vs. The New Jersey Devils (Alex Braun & Tank Bradley) vs. The Out-Trekkers (Out-Trekker #1 & Out-Trekker #2)

Two of the teams are well-known to the former DAVE and now PSW audience, while in a surprising development The Out-Trekkers (known more commonly as The Outbackers) make their PSW debut. The Out-Trekkers are a pair of beefy Australian heavyweights who won the SWF World Tag Team Titles on two occasions, and look positively enormous here against their more diminutive opponents.

Elimination rules apply here, with two teams starting (The Out-Trekkers and The New Jersey Devils) and a third team joining mid-way through the match. The match itself is a total car crash: there are weapons galore, and scant regard for the rules particularly once the third team (The Latino Kingz) join.

Mid-way through the match...

image.jpeg

Jesus Chavez joins his fellow Latino Kingz at ringside and interferes just long enough to allow Rudy Velasquez to land a top rope splash on Out-Trekker #2 (Rolf) to secure a surprise pinfall to eliminate The Out-Trekkers. The numbers advantage allows the Kingz to continue to control the bout against the veteran New Jersey Devils, but soon...

image.png

Jack Griffith runs down to the ring and starts brawling with all three Latino Kingz - a measure of revenge for their beat down on him last show.

Griffiths’ interference is enough to give The New Jersey Devils the ascendancy, and soon enough Hector Galindo falls victim to the Tank Crush to give the three-time DAVE Tag Team Champions a decisive win at 13:54.

REVIEW: Surprising to see The Out-Trekkers as the first eliminated, but the real story here is the continuation of the feud between The Latino Kingz and Jack Griffith. It was a much-needed win too for The New Jersey Devils, who have had mixed results in PSW’s brief history. Otherwise, this was a fun brawl. [53]

After the match, The Latino Kingz are furious - and they stage a revenge attack against Jack Griffith and The New Jersey Devils, who were briefly celebrating in the ring. The giant man Jesus Chavez seems to be the difference as he launches Alex Braun out of the ring and sends him crashing into the steel barricade, and that’s enough to give The Latino Kingz the ascendancy.

That’s until The Out-Trekkers come rushing back out to the ring - and despite being a classic heel duo, the two come of the rescue of Griffith, Braun & Bradley to send The Latino Kingz scurrying up the ramp furious. Velasquez in particular is livid, as he kicks the steel barricade as he retreats to the backstage area, as the five veterans shake hands in the middle of the ring.

[48]

image.png

After the ring clears, Art Reed comes out to a generous ovation from the crowd. He’s had three wins in three “Olympic Challenges” so far - beating Doug Peak, The Gambler and Land Mass, who have all been hand selected by the increasingly furious manager, Carl Batch.

image.png

Sure enough, Carl Batch makes his way to the ring with a microphone - although he’s dressed oddly, in a robe. Batch says that he’s now tried on three occasions to end the Olympic Challenge, but none of the men he’s chosen have been able to get the job done.

Sometimes, you gotta take matters into your own hands,” Batch says. He soon removes the robe, to show that he’s dressed in a wrestling singlet - his diminutive and slightly sloppy frame drawing laughter from Reed, who can scarcely believe his eyes.

That’s right, Art! Tonight, I am accepting the Olympic Challenge! And I am going to teach you a lesson!

image.png image.png

Singles Match
Art Reed vs. Carl Batch

Despite not being the biggest wrestler going around, the lithe “Pure Athlete” is significantly bigger than Carl Batch, who is no athlete and really in no shape to compete here. Reed mocks Batch as the two circle each other to start, but as Reed makes the first move Batch rolls out of the ring and scampers out to ringside.

Reed follows him out, and Batch starts running away - as he seemingly realises he’s in over his head. Reed starts to chase him, and eventually Batch rolls into the ring with Reed following.

Reed eventually catch Batch - grabbling him firmly by the shoulder as Batch starts to plead with him to let go. However, soon enough, it becomes clear that this was a ruse as…

image.png

411 charges down the ramp and into the ring. Unfortunately for Reed, he’s oblivious to the monster - as 411 clubs him over the back to force him to release his hold. It’s clear that this was Batch’s plan all along, as the cheers 411 on as the big man delivers not one, not two, but three Choke Slams to the “Pure Athlete”!

With Reed well and truly out for the count, Batch covers him and theatrically counts to three himself - finally in his mind putting an end to the Olympic Challenge, having called for help in the form of the massive 411.

[49]

image.png Joshua Taylor.jpg

Singles Match
JD Morgan vs. "Legit" Josh Taylor

After the apparent end of the Olympic Challenge, JD Morgan makes his way out for the other of the night’s “challenges” - this time the “International Challenge”, as the veteran Brit faces another highly rated wrestler from Japan.

This month, it’s 25-year old “Legit” Josh Taylor, who has spent the past four years working with the likes of Mito Miwa, Yoshimi Mushashibo, Bryan Holmes, Dark Angel and Raymond Diaz in PGHW. While most of his big matches in PGHW have been losing efforts, he’s arguably one of the sternest tests for Morgan, who has thus far bested the likes of William Hayes and Kiminobu Kuroki. Billed here as “Legit” Josh Taylor, Taylor appears to being playing the role of an MMA shoot fighter, as he wrestles here in plain black trunks and MMA style gloves.

After the spot tests, car crashes and extended angles so far tonight, this is another change of pace as Morgan and Taylor engage in a more methodical technical match. It takes some time to get going, and the crowd isn’t sure what to make of it, as Morgan and Taylor take turns exchanging locks and holds on the mat.

After a while, Morgan isn’t achieving the success he wants and so abandons his technical style by sending Taylor to the outside and using the surrounds to his advantage. After a brawl on the outside, the match returns to the ring where Morgan locks in the Calf Crusher - only for Taylor to escape with some heel strikes to the face.

Incensed, Morgan fetches a steel chair and attempts to spike Taylor with a pile driver - only for Taylor to fight free and roll Morgan up with a Victory Roll for the surprise win at 12:03.

REVIEW: A decent match which took a while to get the crowd involved. But it was mainly focused on the story. [45]

Taylor celebrates a surprisingly debut win, grabbing the microphone and thanking the crowd for their support. (In reality, they aren’t totally sold).

He doesn’t get far into his victory speech, though, before Morgan attacks him from behind with a double forearm club - before raining down close fisted punches until the young man is busted open.

Not finished, Morgan then locks in the Calf Crusher to make Taylor finally tap - keeping it locked in for second longer before finally letting go. He delivers one stomp for good measure before spitting on Taylor and exiting the ring to a chorus of boos.

PSW Tag Team Title Match
Deadly Alliance (The Punisher & The Wolverine) vs. Purgatory (Hell’s Bouncer & Teddy Powell)

This brings us to the main event of the evening, which sees two relatively new teams facing off for the inaugural PSW Tag Team Titles. Purgatory have been a big focus of PSW so far, with Teddy Powell playing the controlling weasel who capitalises on the power of Hell’s Bouncer.

Meanwhile, Deadly Alliance has won all three of their matches - although their sometimes sloppy powerhouse style is yet to really win over the fans.

Given the limitations of Deadly Alliance, this is a wild brawl which sees Hell’s Bouncer spending most of the bout fighting off The Punisher & The Wolverine as Powell cheers him on from the apron.

Eventually, Powell is brought into the ring (physically - over the ropes) by The Wolverine, who takes issue with one too many cheap shots from “Constant Motion”. But that’s a distraction in itself, as The Wolverine is absolutely flattened with a Lariat from Hell’s Bouncer from a near fall.

The match continues to build, as Deadly Alliance start to fight their way back into the match and force Bouncer to tag out to Powell in a moment of vulnerability. That exposes Powell, who is the smallest man in the match, and he tries to escape by heading to the outside. He’s eventually dragged back in which sees all four men brawl - and, in the carnage, referee R.M. Stones is crushed in the corner.

With the referee down, the crowd goes ballistic as…

image.jpeg

Sammy Bach enters the ring! He’s come charging from the crowd! Powell looks furious and roars instructions at Hell’s Bouncer, only for Bach to fight the giant man off and send him to the outside with a massive Clothesline!

Powell looks helpless as his old tag team partner turns his attention towards him, and then cowardly looks to escape the ring. But he doesn’t get far at all - as The Punisher & The Wolverine crush him with a double lariat. Bach slides out the ring as The Wolverine crunches Powell in the corner with a Running Cannonball - stunning Teddy Powell for long enough to allow referee Stones to count a slow three at 9:51. We’ve got new tag team champions!

REVIEW: This was short, but easily the hottest match of the night. Hell’s Bouncer did a mountain of work at ringside, and although the crowd aren’t totally sold on Deadly Alliance they had the size to be believable opponents against the big man. [63]

Referee R.M. Stones groggily presents Deadly Alliance with the PSW Tag Team Titles - with massive duo becoming the inaugural champions in this new promotion.

They celebrate in the ring with Sammy Bach, although the latter soon climbs the ropes and points at Teddy Powell who is being helped to the back by Hell’s Bouncer.

It’s not entirely clear what Bach is saying, but one thing is for sure: he’s not forgotten about Teddy Powell’s treachery, and he is out for revenge.

OVERALL RATING: 57

Morgan out of PSW; Vibert reportedly unimpressed
BY RICH BLUNDRED | 1 DAY AGO

Three-time DAVE Extreme Champion JD Morgan is reportedly out of Pittsburgh Steel Wrestling following a backstage bust up with maverick promotor Phil Vibert. The 15-year DAVE veteran appeared at each of the first four shows with PSW, facing highly rated wrestlers from Japan. However, his most recent outing (a loss to youngster Legit Josh Taylor at Highway to Hell in February) reportedly left a sour taste in his mouth, and a backstage bust up saw him unwilling to re-up for further appearances with Vibert's phoenix-like promotion. Backstage sources say that, while Vibert is unimpressed with Morgan's departure, he remains open to Morgan returning at the right time, in a sign that he had learned from his previous tendency to hold grudges. Another source, though, reported Vibert as saying: "He can **** off as far as I'm concerned; I'll never work with him again".

Either way, Morgan's rematch with Taylor at PSW Heaven or Hell? in March is officially off, with PSW announcing The Dutch Master (former kick boxer and MMA fighter, Arjen Van Den Leyne) as Taylor's new opponent... [MORE]

"We don't get along": Carl Batch on Emerging Relationship with 411, Downfall of DAVE, New Beginnings with PSW & More!
BY RICH BLUNDRED | 3 DAYS AGO

Veteran wrestling manager Carl Batch was recently a guest on Blurcat Wrestling Live, where he spoke about a range of topics impacting on wrestling today. Among other things, Batch spoke of his recent alliance with hired gun 411 and the apparent real-life enmity between the two. "He's a hard guy to get along with," Batch said. "We're both professionals, but we don't really see eye-to-eye. We don't get along right now, but maybe that will change". Otherwise, Batch spoke about his disappointment with the collapse of DAVE, which means he eyes the emergence of Phil Vibert's new promotion with a degree of caution... [MORE]
