Professional Fighters League: Road to the million!

Recommended Posts

Hello friends!

I was sidelined due to computer issues and ended up losing all my files, and with it my UFC dynasty.

I decided to restart another dynasty and once again I will use the PFL. I love the league system and in time I hope to bring some new features to the competition.

In this dynasty I will focus only on news related to the PFL, weigh-in and results and always bring the history of champions, records and statistics of the season.

Hope you follow and enjoy!

History

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) is an American mixed martial arts league founded by venture capitalist Donn Davis in 2017 and launched in 2018, following the acquisition and restructuring of the former World Series of Fighting (WSOF) promotion in 2017 by MMAX Investment Partners. It is the first major MMA organization in which individual athletes compete in a regular season, post-season and championship, rather than on a year-round basis.

The World Series of Fighting (WSOF) was formed in 2012, after signing a broadcast deal with the NBC Sports Network. Soon after WSOF's first event was announced, it would be confirmed that Bas Rutten and Michael Schiavello would serve as commentators. The WSOF held over 35 events in multiple countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, China and the Philippines, and was best known for featuring fighters such as Justin Gaethje, Marlon Moraes and Lance Palmer.

In 2017, MMAX Investment Partners, a group of McLean, Virginia investors, which included financier Russ Ramsey, Mark Leschly, businessman Ted Leonsis, Washington Nationals' owner Mark Lerner and future Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin, acquired the assets of the WSOF. It was announced that the WSOF would be restructured as the Professional Fighters League (PFL), with owner Davis as founder and with the inaugural season taking place in 2018. After the restructuring, WSOF president and co-founder Ray Sefo joined PFL as president of fight operations. Sefo was previously a MMA fighter and a six-time Muay Thai world champion. In January 2018, former National Football League executive Peter Murray was appointed CEO of the league. That year, in its inaugural season as the PFL, the promotion introduced a league model, the first MMA promotion to do so.

The PFL's inaugural event took place on June 7, 2018, at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. At the end, each champion of the six weight classes won a championship prize of $1 million each.

PFL Regular Season & Playoffs - Fight format and point system

The PFL's matches are held inside a 10-sided mixed-martial arts cage known as the SmartCage, and adhere to the unified rules of mixed martial arts, with the exception of the prohibition of elbow strikes.

A fighter who is overweight on the scale at weigh-ins will be deducted one point in the standings in the PFL's season structure and will be ineligible to win any points from that bout.

The PFL follows a point-based scoring system, consisting of outcome-based elimination, with a proprietary scoring and bonuses for an early win. Under the outcome-based scoring system, fighters compete twice during the regular season. Four fighters with the most points in their respective divisions advance to the playoffs. Fights are three-round bouts, and the winners are awarded three points. Bonus points are awarded for knockouts and submission wins. If a fighter finishes a bout in the first round, they are awarded three bonus points. Second and third-round finishes are awarded two and one points, respectively. If a fighter wins in the first round, they are awarded six total points. A second-round finish awards them five total points, and a third-round finish awards them four total points. The loser of the fight is not awarded any points. If a fight ends in a draw, both fighters are awarded a single point. For example, if a fighter wins a fight in the first round, the fighter will receive six total points. A win by decision doesn't earn bonus points.

Win in any round automatically: 3 points
Bonus points for a finish (KO or submission)
Round 1: 3 points
Round 2: 2 points
Round 3: 1 point

In the playoffs, the player with the most points is ranked number one and will face number four. The number two and three ranked players will face each other. The semi-finals are three-round bouts. The winners of these bouts will face each other in a five-round championship fight for a $1 million prize.

In 2021, PFL changed the playoff structure, the top four fighters per division after the regular season will make the playoffs, a number down from the eight who made the playoffs in men's divisions in previous seasons. In the women's lightweight division, the top four fighters make the playoffs, similar to the 2019 rules. The four fighters who make the playoffs advance directly to the semifinals in each division. There are no quarterfinals, nor a situation where a fighter must win twice in a single night.

PFL Superfights
In January 2023, the PFL announced a new division, known as Super Fight, with pay-per-view events.

Super Fight entrants will earn at least 50 percent of pay-per-view revenue, significantly higher than the 20 percent earned by UFC fighters.

PFL Challenger Series
The PFL Challenger Series is made up young and up-and-coming male and female MMA prospects will compete for a slot in the PFL tournament season and a chance at $1 million.

The Challenger Series season is eight weeks long with fights in the divisions in which the regular season will take place.

PFL Regional League
Starting in 2023, the PFL has announced that PFL Europe will feature Europe's top emerging MMA fighters.

PFL CEO Peter Murray stated that this model will spread across the world to seek new talent for the PFL.

The competition will have 8 fighters disputing a grand prix and the winner can be forwarded to the Challenger Series in the following season and thus maybe reach the regular season and seek the prize of one million dollars.

PFL 1 results: Akhmedov dominates Santos, Delija scores 6 points

The 2023 PFL season kicked off with a big card that brought the first round in the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions.

Leading the card is former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Thiago "Marreta" Santos made his highly anticipated PFL debut against last season's runner-up Omari Akhmedov. The fight started and the Russian showed his strategy by putting "Marreta" against the fence and using his grappling to dominate the actions against Santos. The plan was successful and after three rounds of dominance by Akhmedov the three judges scored it 30-27 for the Russian.

In the co-main event, last season's heavyweight champion Ante Delija easily defeated former UFC veteran Maurice Greene. Always in control since the beginning of the fight Delija was faster and more forceful and with a sequence of three blows that ended with a right cross that took Greene to the knockout and made him score his first six points this season.

2021 light heavyweight champion Antonio Carlos Junior returned after being out of action for months against Challenger Series contender Impa Kasanganay. "Cara de Sapato" used his powerful jiu-jitsu to block Kasanganay's powerful strikes and after three rounds he won the fight by unanimous decision.

Another champion of the 2021 season, Bruno Cappelozza had his rematch against Matheus Schaffel, who won the fight between them last season. This time, Cappelozza proved to be more aggressive and dominant in the standing fight, arriving in the third round to open a cut on Schaffel's eye. And after three rounds Cappelozza got his rematch and his first three points.

PFL 2 results: Steven Ray stops Raush Manfio at PFL 2 main event

The second round of the PFL season took place tonight in Florida. The main event featured last season's runner-up Steven Ray against 2021 season champion Raush Manfio.

After a lot of studying, Ray got a takedown in the middle of the round and kept the dominance on the ground, controlling the fight. On the way back to the second round Manfio started more aggressive, but in an exchange of blows Ray hit a left cross that took the Brazilian to a knockdown and with a few more blows led the referee to interrupt the fight and guarantee 5 points for the Scotsman.

The evening's co-main event featured 2022 lightweight champion Larissa Pacheco returning at 145 lbs, after one of the biggest upsets in the sport after beating Kayla Harrison, against Russian Bellator MMA veteran Marina Mokhnatkina. And the fight had a surprising outcome for the fans. Mokhnatkina managed with a clinch to pin the Brazilian and throw her with a suplex and with the guard already passed managed to adjust the position of a kneebar forcing Pacheco to tap.

Still on the main card we had the fight between the lightweight champion of 2022, Olivier Aubin Mercier facing PFL debutant Shane Burgos. Mercier showed why he is considered the best lightweight currently in the PFL, and with two knockdowns applied in the first and third rounds, he managed to win by unanimous decision.

Another former UFC fighter who had a brilliant debut was Aspen Ladd, who showed a high level of jiu jitsu and submitted Amber Leibrock in the second round with an armbar.

And opening the main card we had the two-time PFL lightweight champion Natan Schulte defeating Russian Abdul-Aziz Abdulvakhabov by unanimous decision.

On the preliminary card, the surprise was the victory of the Egyptian Ahmed Amir, who won by technical knockout of Clay Collard in the first round with a beautiful sequence of blows that took the American to a knockdown and with a few more ground and pound strikes, the referee stopped the fight. .

The remainder of the card saw Julia Budd defeat Olena Kolesnyk via unanimous decision. Still undefeated Karolina Sobek submits veteran Alexis Davis with an armbar in the second round. Yamato Nishikawa overcame Alex Martinez by unanimous decision and in the opening fight of the card, Amanda Leve submitted Martina Jindrova in the first round.

Francis Ngannou Signs with Professional Fighters League

After months of speculation, MMA's biggest free agent has arrived.

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) announced on Tuesday that former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou has signed a contract and is expected to fight on the first PFL Superfight card due in December. The news was first reported by Blurcat.com.

Full terms of the deal were not released, but Ngannou stated, "Let's just say, all-in my deal with the PFL is more than anyone else has offered."

Ngannou (17-3) made headlines last year when he left the UFC as heavyweight champion after he and the promotion failed to reach an agreement after months of negotiations. The 36-year-old Cameroonian, a Frenchman born in Cameroon, last fought on January 22, 2022, unifying his UFC lineal belt against interim champion Ciryl Gane via unanimous decision at UFC 270. , with virtually every other major martial arts outfit, were among MMA's biggest stories last year, with rumors of his imminent signing with organizations such as the PFL, Bellator MMA and One Championship.

“The last few months have been really interesting to understand and see the landscape, but I'm really excited about this deal with the PFL because they basically showed what I expected,” Ngannou told the New York Times. “They didn't just come in as a promotion looking for a fighter, but they really came in as a partner that sees more value in you as a person.”

PFL Challenger Series Thad Jean Replaces Don Madge vs. Shane Mitchell at PFL 3

Undefeated Challenger Series prospect Thad Jean will be back in the PFL smartcage sooner than expected.

The American, who is based in Florida, received a last-minute offer to replace Don Madge against Shane Mitchell in the welterweight bout for PFL 3.

"My manager called me on Monday night offering the fight and I took it," Jean told Blurcat.com. "And I didn't think twice. The hardest thing was doing all the medical tests on time. It was a marathon. "I'm at the airport. The guy has two legs and two arms like me. I love challenges and I'm going there to take that Australian's place and enter the competition for $1 million." said Jean.

PFL 3 2023 Regular Season Weigh-in Results: All Fighters Make Weight

The 2023 Professional Fighters League season will kick off for the welterweight and featherweight divisions.

PFL 3 is headlined by an intriguing welterweight bout between Anthony Pettis and Sadibou Sy. Both headliners made weight without worry, as did the rest of the 12-fight card.

Sy (13-6-2, 1 NC) is winning the 2022 welterweight division season and will look to continue his momentum. Although he lost against Magomed Magomedkerimov in the 2021 playoffs, his efforts in 2022 have been perfect. Wins over the likes of Rory MacDonald and Dilano Taylor make him an early favorite to be a top contender once again. The 36-year-old officially weighed in at 171 pounds.

Looking for another title shot and throwing a wrench into Sy's hopes of a repeat is Anthony Pettis (26-14). In a streak of two straight losses to Steven Ray, the former WEC and UFC champion, he competed in boxing against legend Roy Jones Jr. before returning to the smartcage. Now the fighter has a chance of redemption and start the year with an important victory. "Showtime" weighed in at 170.8 pounds.

Anthony Pettis Dominates Sadibou Sy in PFL 3 Main Event

Showtime is back! Tonight in Illinois, the PFL played its last round of the regular season and featured Anthony Pettis facing last season's champion Sadibou Sy. Pettis had a very safe fight and varied his striking with grappling and dominated Sy for three rounds and had his arm raised as the winner, after two consecutive losses to Steven Ray last year.

In the co-main event Brendan Loughnane added yet another knockout to his record. In the third round he knocked out former WSOF champion and UFC bantamweight title challenger Marlon Moraes. After two rounds of dominance, with a knockdown to Loughnane in the second round, last season's champion won a knockout after a right cross that dropped the Brazilian immediately.

The rest of the card showed very balanced fights with many decisions. Japan's Ryoji Kudo defeated Jeremy Stephens via split decision, in a fight that was hotly contested by Stephens after the results were announced.

Dilano Taylor dominated debutant Jarrah Al-Silawi via unanimous decision and Chris Wade also had a dominant performance over Alejandro Flores and walked away with a unanimous decision.

On the preliminary card, the highlight was the fight that opened the card. Thad Jean, who replaced Don Madge at the last minute, got a quick submission of Shane Mitchell in the first round and is the leader among welterweights with six points.

In the other fights of the night Magomed Magomedkherimov defeated David Zawada by unanimous decision; Bubba Jenkins defeated Gabriel Alves Braga by unanimous decision; Magomed Umalatov defeated Carlos Leal via unanimous decision and Movlid Khaybulaev defeated former KSW champion Daniel Torres via unanimous decision.
