mauboy
Financials Our budget increased an impressive $70,000 this year. Hopefully we'll improve on our recruiting class this year! That would be awesome. Job Offers Not that I plan to leave anytime soon, but we didn't get any offers anywhere this year, very strange. Oh, well. Made my decision that much easier. Coaching Offers We've lost both our coordinators, so we'll need to spend some money 'em. We signed a pretty good DC while having to SETTLE on a Offensive Coordinator as we got outbid in the final week. Ouch!!! He cost half as much as the guy I previously offered. That is a total bummer. Maybe I should've went after a smaller OC. Ah, well. Lets get me some transfers. Transfers Through two weeks of transfers, we signed a pretty good kicker along with a VERY good offensive tackle. This will allow me to not worry so much about offensive lineman, considering we've got a great group of guys. Lets see what we can do in the final week of transfers. In the final week we nabbed another offensive tackle, so that leaves us with two OT's that have a potential of 9! AWESOME. TIme to move onto recruiting! mauboy
Recruiting Weeks 1-3 We have never signed a player in the first three weeks and this year that does not change. Recruiting: Week Four Nothing again this week but some scholarships we need to hand out again. Rats. Recruiting: Week Five This may perhaps be the worst week I've ever had. We DID sign one guy but we now have to find TEN players to fill with scholarships. Uggghhh.. Not so lucky this year. We had 23 scholarships open and we've only filled four so far this offseason, three being transfers. Players committing to San Diego State RB Karl Phillips - 2/9, #189 recruit in the country. Recruiting: Week Six It was really important to make some signings this week, and we did.. FINALLY. Despite the fact they're positions we didn't really need, it is still nice to have depth at these positions. We've struggled with the lack of running backs and quarterbacks recently. So, we should be good here for the next four years. Players committing to San Diego State OLB Mike Agee - 2/9 OLB Bill Duval - 3/8 QB Lawrence Brister - 3/7 RB Brandon White - 4/7 RB Carl Bostic - 2/8 So far all my guys are rated in the top 250 in the country. Could we be looking at another top 25 class in the country? Perhaps! Recruiting: Week Seven We land another running back along with much needed positions of SS and DT. Players committing to San Diego State OLB Lynn Jones - 3/8 RB Joe Smith(A) - 3/6 SS Eric Vincent - 3/7, this guy here sent me a letter before recruiting began saying how he wanted to come to our school. Well, here he is. :) DT Kevin Barnes - 2/7 Recruiting: Week Eight With ten recruits under our belt so far, we could use a few more... and we do, we get three more to push our total to 13! Players committing to San Diego State DT Jerry Nitschke - 1/7 OLB Eric Merritt - 2/7 CB Jay Bennett - 2/6 Recruiting: Final Week Players committing to San Diego State OT Dick Russell WR Ray Rivers

mauboy
Training We're going to be SO good next year, it's crazy. I'm looking at our players in training and we've got so many good, YOUNG players. But, who knows what'll happen between now and then. SDSU is getting close to becoming an elite team, seriously. Wow. Team Budget - Recruiting Type We get to go with the best recruiting service out there along with piling up on things for our budget. Very, very exciting times for us. mauboy
Beginning of a new era? The rankings for recruiting classes are in and we are #43. Not too bad, we obviously could have done better, but we'll have to wait until next year. While we are picked to be third in the conference again this year, we've actually got some very good talent all around, minus the secondary...which could hurt us, but we'll try our best out there.. mauboy
San Diego State U @ Baylor - Aztecs by five. Despite being away from home we're still favorites in this one. Baylor is a little improved from last season, so we too, need to be improved. And I think we are. Promuto is going to step it up as a leader this year. We also need to keep our eyes on academics, we've got lots of guys that are looking to be in trouble come week three, including a few top guns on our team. Yuck. 1st Quarter Our first pick of the season comes in the hands of SS Eric Pruitt! It was the second play of the game but it was a bomb, so we've got to work our way 80 yards if we want a touchdown. Let's go, baby! On our offense's opening drive, Promuto went 4/5 for 70 yards, including the 10 yard touchdown pass to George Green. What a start for the guys. Even our new freshman running back, Karl Phillips, had two carries for 10 yards. Not a whole lot happened for the rest of the first quarter, besides a fumble by Promuto following a sack.. errgh. 2nd Quarter George Green gets drilled and fumbles it for our second fumble somewhat deep in Baylor's territory. Garrrr! Keyshawn Walker nails his first field goal try of the year to make it 10-0 with about nine to play in the half. Walker shanks his next field goal try off to the left.. he really had to shank it to miss it from 29 yards out. Damn it. That closes out the first half as we continue to hold a 10-0 lead. We're really dominating this game on both sides of the ball. 3rd Quarter Following our third fumble, this one by another wide receiver, Holland, we give up about twenty yards before the Bears make it a 10-3 game thanks to a field goal. Stupid turnovers. Walker knocks in his next field goal try to make it 13-3 as we continue to basically manhandle these guys, but we can't put it away for good. With four to play in the third, Walker gets another try to make it a 13 point game with a field goal, but he doesn't come up with the make... Jeez. This guy was good last year, what's going on? He's missed two chip-ins. 4th Quarter RB Phillips gets his first touchdown of the season as we start off the final quarter of the game. 20-3. The freshman is having a good showing, but is being overshadowed by Promuto's game. Eric Pruitt comes up with his second pick of the game to keep Baylor under 200 yards on the game with still nine to play. 27-3 is the final as we close out the game with a 10 yard touchdown pass to WR Lewis. Despite three fumbles lost and two field goal misses(three but luckily the defense caused a first down giving us a first down which eventually led to the touchdown), we were able to win this ball game. And is easily evident as to why we whomped 'em. Outgaining 526-172 or something like that! That's impressive. Lets do it again next week against SJSU. mauboy
Week Two - 1-0 SDSU @ 0-1 SJSU - San Jose St by 4 Hmm.. I don't know why SJSU is favored.. well, I guess they are a talented team, so we better take 'em seriously. There is one more week before academics comes into play... yikes. We're still in rough shape in some places. It's a big worry because our toughest part of the schedule is RIGHT away following week three. We've got Utah, Cincinatti, Air Force and then TCU. Crazy tough, I'll say. 1st Quarter Boo yah. Domination on our opening drive. 8 plays, 77 yards capped off with a 13 yard Phillips run for the TD. 7-0. LB Galimore forces a fumble and recovers it himself to give us the ball back near the red zone! 1st and 10! C'mon 'O'. With under five to play, Phillips gets his second touchdown, this one from 9 yards out! 14-0! 2nd Quarter SJSU comes up with a nice drive to make it a seven point game again. 14-7 at the start of the second quarter. 14-10 as SJSU comes up with some more points on a shortened field following a nice punt return. C'mon defense! Just like last week!!! That will actually be the score as we head into halftime. Our offense couldn't do a whole lot, but, we're doing just fine, especially with Phillips' legs(92 yards). 3rd Quarter Promuto gets his first touchdown pass of the game, this one to Green, who's got two on the season. Hopefully he isn't benched next week due to grades. 21-10 early on in the second half. 24-10 as Walker comes up with a simple field goal from 28 yards out. We are midway through the third quarter. SJSU comes back quickly with a touchdown to keep it a close game, 24-17. We answer back just as quickly, just not as strong, but it was a long field nonetheless. 27-17 after the 47 yard field goal try to nearly end the third quarter. 4th Quarter San Jose comes up with three points to make it a one possession game once again. 27-20 with around nine to play in the game. We have a chance to put away the game as we start our drive with about five to go, but we come up short on third down with 2:30 left to play, so SJSU will get another shot at coming up with at least a tie. On third and 10 with 1:30 left, San Jose comes up with a big 21 yard gain to keep the drive alive. A few plays later they sit at the 18 yard line with 36 seconds left with a second down and eight to go. A sack made it 3rd and 10 with 21 seconds to play, but the following play San Jose came up big with a 13 yard gain, putting them at the 8 yard line. Eeks! They'll get two more plays most likely.. C'mon defense! ERIC PRUITT, strong safety stud comes up with his third pick of the season to clinch the game! 2-0 we go before we find out about our academic problems. Phillips had a great first half and a piss poor second half, but the end result is what matters most. mauboy
Week Four: 2-0 SDSU @ 3-0 Utah - Utes by 10 Thankfully the damage caused from academics wasn't very high, as a matter of fact, only one starter from the worried six were carded. Well, this is really a step up from last year, I remember when Utah would be favorites in the upper teens to sometimes the twenties.. so this means we really have a shot! Or do we? ;) 1st Quarter All right! Utah started out with the ball and we held them to a field goal! 3-0 early on. It's our time to take over as the conference powerhouse! We don't quite have the same luck on defense the second time around as Utah scores quite easily on us, thanks to a 47 yard pass play that kept the drive alive. 10-0, midway through the first. Our defense plays a lot better in the next two Utah drives, but its our offense that is the problem so far as we head into the second quarter with the ball. 2nd Quarter CB Lethon Stevens of the Aztecs picked one off from the Utah quarterback and returned it 47 yards for the touchdown to make it a three point game! Wow, how about that. 10-7. Whoo! Now if our offense could help out a bit, that would be nice. 17-7 after Utah answers back with a convincing drive. Our defense is doing well, I'll say it again, its our offense that sucks so far. Promuto to be exact. Maybe I need to change up the playcalling, see if he likes that. Damn it! Our offensive line continues to make mistakes mentally, absolutely no discipline whatsoever from these guys.. I mean, holding, holding, holding, holding, holding. That's all they want to do it seems. And they do it at the worst times. 25 yard pass play, called back.. would've been first and goal. Instead we punt it away and we move to halftime. I guess I should be happy we're still in the game. 3rd Quarter 20-7 following Brister's first pick of the season. Brister is our backup quarterback who will no longer see the field for this game. Promuto has been playin with a pulled hamstring, who knows it would make him this bad. Is it time to bring back Bud Long or let the injured Promuto try bringing us back into it? 4th Quarter Our offense continues to suck, perhaps because I'm passing it way too much.. Oops. Time to bring us back in it despite Utah picking up another field goal to make it 23-7 as we start the fourth. After yet another unsuccesful drive for me calling the plays, I turned it over to the OC who couldn't do any better for the remainder of the game. I'm glad it wasn't just me. But of course, our OC only cost $300,000 as he was given to us. Ugggh.. I forgot about our crappy OC. 30-7 is the final score as we hung with Utah for a while, but ended up with absolutely nothing. mauboy
Week Four: 2-1 SDSU @ 1-2 Cincinatti - Aztecs by 6 Four weeks in a row away from home.. Oh, well, if we can come out of it 3-1, I will be happy. MIke Black will be seeing limited time on the field as our #3, he'll probably only come in on spread or trips offenses. Other than that, we're set to go and looking to bounce back strong with a nice performance. We should be able to do just that. 1st Quarter Midway through the first quarter we get the first chance at some points and the Bearcats prevented that as they block Walker's 35 yard field goal chance. Promuto gets hurt again, slightly. We're going to like Brister play for the rest of the 1st quarter, which is about 7 minutes, and we'll bring back in Promuto. NOthing else happens as we finish out the quarter scoreless, but with the ball and threatening as we head into the second quarter. 2nd Quarter We threaten enough to get into field goal range for Walker who knocks in a 50 yard try! 3-0. Walker gets three more as our offense stalls. 35 yard field goal makes it 6-0. I knew this could happen.. we are dominating pretty much every phase of the game, but it would take one play to change that.. and it happened, a 38 yard touchdown play gives Cincinatti a 7-6 lead as we near halftime. Brister is back in thanks to Promuto getting hurt a little more. We'll keep Brister in the rest of the game, or as need be... A miracle 59 yard pass play gives us a chance to get some more points as we head into the half, but Walker misses his second chance of the game. Good thing we got that transfer stud(8/8) kicker. 7-6 as we head into halftime. 3rd Quarter Walker gets us the lead back with a 28 yard field goal. 9-7 to start off the second half. Cincinatti regains the lead with a field goal of their own... the secondary really needs to stop letting up big plays, but I can't blame 'em since they're not that good. Next recruiting season I'm going after every single CB in the world. Guh.. 10-9, still early on in the third. With under three to play in the third we get the lead back yet again.. and of course with only three points. We come up short very close to the endzone to settle for a 28 yard field goal. 12-10 as we hit our fourth FG of the game. 4th Quarter Cinci will have the ball to start of the fourth quarter following our punt. Our defense continues to absolutely dominate, but our offense forced an interception, Brister to be exact, deep in our territory, allowing Cincinatti to lose three yards during their drive but still end up with a field goal to take the lead 13-12 with nine minutes to go in the game. The offense continues to struggle despite Brister's 300+ yards game so far. Just four minutes to play now as we punt it away yet again in the fourth. Lordy, lordy! 3rd and 18 we sit with 48 seconds to go, on the 40ish yard line on our own side. We gain seven yards on third down and sit midfield hoping for a miracle.. and it comes true! Phillips beat his man down the field and connected with Brister for a 34 yard gain pushing us into field goal position with just 27 seconds left to go! Wowza! Now Walker needs to come up with his 5th field goal of the game. Big kick here. Makes or breaks our season, pretty much. We can't afford to lose this one. The 34 yard field goal is GOOD! We squeak out a victory in Cincinatti, holy cow! WHHHHHHEWWWW!!! This was a game we should've won by about 20 according to the stats, but that didn't happen. 22 first downs compared to the Bearcats 9. 470 yards compared to 212 for Cinci. 5 field goals for Walker should never ever happen, but he probably should have had all seven made to give us a more comfortable lead, but he shanked one and the other got blocked... so, uh, that made me real nervous going down to the final second. mauboy
Week Six: 3-1 Air Force @ 3-1 SDSU - 'tecs by 7 We're favored for the second week in a row. But this time, we're out for revenge for last years loss to the Cougars. We ate Cougar for dinner for each night of the week! Ooooh, yeah. Everyone is good to play except one of our defensive lineman, which hurts a little, but not so much considering we run a 3-4. But lets get to the ass kicking!!! 1st Quarter Each team punts it back and forth until finally we get a good enough drive going where we got on board first with a 46 yard field goal from Walker. 3-0 with four minutes to play in the first quarter. Air Force comes right back and ties it up at three as we near the end of the first. 2nd Quarter The first half of the second quarter just continued to be more punts and all that jazz. Air Force takes the lead with three minutes to go in the half. They knocked in a 28 yard field goal to take the lead 6-3. Our offense just can't find its stride right now. Promuto had a decent start but had a pick that has since hurt his confidence. He needs to regain it if he wants to play the whole game. Well, if one play, 64 yards to Phillips doesn't help, then I don't know what will. We go one play for a touchdown to answer back Air Force's field goal. 10-7 with still three to play in the half. We hold Air Force and force them to punt and we'll get one more shot from the 20 or so yard line with :46 to play in the half. Woot. LEt's go Promuto! And BAM! A 39 yard pass play on the first play gives us a legitimate shot at getting some points before halftime. Three completions later for a total of 21 yards gets us well within field goal range for Walker, who's already nailed a 50 yarder this year. So with 13 seconds to go, we rely on Walker's leg to get usa 43 yard field goal. And it's great to rely on him, I guess. Walker makes it a one touchdown game as we head into halftime. 3rd Quarter Phillips continues his dominance in this game, showing off this time with his legs. 20-6 as Phillips gets into the endzone on a sweep to the left. Lewis gets Promuto's second touchdown pass of the half as we extend our lead some more. 27-6 as we continue to whomp Air Force. No slowing down anytime soon though! Still five to go in the third quarter. Phillips continues to show flashes of brilliance.. and he's just a freshman! A 58 yard touchdown run from the youngster pretty much put this game away!! 34-6 in a hurry!! 4th Quarter Air Force forces a safety to get on the board in the second half.. but that's all. 34-8 is the final score. Nothing else happened in the fourth quarter as we manhandle the Cougars. That should make the AD happy. With Utah losing two weeks ago to BYU, we're still alive and kicking in the Mountain West! We just have to do our job against TCU and TCU needs to beat Utah. But we need to play one game at a time. NO looking forward. Great game all around!!! mauboy
Week 7: 4-1 SDSU @ 2-2 TCU - Horned Frogs by 7 It's going to be a GREAT game folks! A very evenly matched battle against two teams that will be fighting it out for second place in the Mountain West conference with a small chance of getting first! We need a huge week out of Promuto and Phillips. Much like last week, but better! Our defense needs to continue playing like the #6 defense in the country against the #9 offense in the country.. OOOH, yah! I'm pumped up, baby. 1st Quarter Brilliant! 4 carries for 46 yards for the young Phillips and a couple nice completions for Promuto gets us into the endzone to open up the game! 7-0 following the 10 yard touchdown pass from Promuto to Barber. The defense gave up a huge 64 yard gain, but was able to hold TCU to a field goal, thank the lord! They were on the 3 yard line with 1st and Goal but failed to do anything! WHEW! 7-3. We answer back with a field goal of our own to make it 10-3! The drive stalled after Phillips got stuffed twice in a row, but he's still having a fantastic game. 2:49 left in the first quarter. LB Sheldon Graham picks one off to give us the ball back in a hurry!!! Let's go 'O'!! 2nd Quarter After converting 4th and 3 at the 32 yard line we get to keep our drive going which eventually turns into a 4th and 1 failure.. Probably a mistake to try getting another first down on fourth down, but oh well! And it looks to bite us in the ass as the Frogs get a touchdown to tie it right up. 10-10 early on in the second quarter.. With under two minutes to play in the half, TCU comes up with another touchdown to take the lead 17-10. We're coming barely short on offense and our defense is starting to look overmatched. Especially in the secondary, which they are. One more shot at some points before halftime. 1:40 left on the clock. BAM! A 49 yard pass reception allows us to get down the field in a hurry and set us up for a 10 yard touchdown pass, this one caught by Mike Black! 17-all as we head into halftime! Wow, what a 2-minute drill by Promuto, who was struggling big time in the second quarter. 3rd Quarter TCU marches right down the field on our defense... but they get stuffed in the red zone and eventually get their field goal blocked by our pumped up defense! Everyone is pumped! Except the fans of course.. they're crying! Ahahh. Now we're crying as we fumble it away at midfield. We were really putting on a show, too! Damn it. But TCU turns it over on downs near midfield as well! Woot! The rest of the third quarter goes down quietly as we head into the fourth quarter with a 17-17 tie after a scoreless third quarter. 4th Quarter TCU strings together a couple of nice plays to get into the endzone on a 12 yard touchdown pass play. 24-17. 13 minutes to go in the game. Promuto throws one into the arms of the defenders and we turn it over deep in our territory.. Damn it. This could be it for us here. But miraculously, DT Barmes says NO! as he picks one off for himself! Wow, still alive, baby. Phillips or the offense hasn't done a whole lot since the first quarter it seems. Or since the first drive, even. Gosh. We have to keep punting it away. Our defense needs to come up with a HUGE HUGE play. We don't get one of those as TCU marches down the field yet again, converting twice on third downs and medium. 31-17 with seven to play. We need to get something going. Unbelievable. TCU's defense played OUTSTANDING for the rest of the game beyond our first drive. WE couldn't do **** and they just did their job on offense. 37-17 is the final score as TCU gets two more field goals after we turned it over on downs twice in their territory. What an ugly game that could've been won if Promuto wasn't so horrible. They were just picking him apart all game; playing great defense against our passing game which usually could be relied on, but not today. mauboy
Week 8: 1-4 Wyoming @ 4-2 SDSU - Aztecs by 18 Well, like the spread says, we should have no problem taking care of the Cowboys; nor should we have a problem taking care of the rest of our games this season. But we'll wait and see. 1st Quarter Promuto opens up the game 6/7 for 62 yards on the first drive of the game. His last reception was a touchdown pass to Mike Black to make it 7-0 early on. The rest of the first quarter goes down quietly with a few good drives, but always ending up in a punt. 2nd Quarter Five minutes into the second quarter Wyoming gets a big 59 yard play that sets them up for an 11 yard touchdown pass to tie the game up at seven. Stupid secondary. We answer back quickly as Promuto continues to impress against this poor defense. 14-7 as Promuto gets his second touchdown pass of the day, this one to Arnold. A 60 yard pass play sets Wyoming up for another touchdown, but here's the kicker... we pushed 'em back to a 3rd and 25 on the 30 yard line.. LOL And BAM! Another stinkin' long pass play, 29 yards which set up an easy touchdown. 14-14. Promuto needs to pass completions to get into the endzone for us. A 58 yard play and a 28 yard play following a 1 yard sack. The 28 yarder was for a touchdown to Green to make it 21-14. What a wild game now. 28-14 as Promuto gets his fourth touchdown pass of the day, this one to Barber! His fourth different receiver with a touchdown. Promuto has been BRILLIANT so far. 322 yards as we head into halftime! 3rd Quarter Wyoming continues to expose our weak secondary as they move down the field through the air but get stuffed in the redzone and settle for three. 28-17. Walker answers back with a field goal of his own from 22 yards out. 31-17 with three minutes to go in the third. 4th Quarter Walker gets a chance to put this game away with his leg, but misses left from 47 yards out. Dang. Still a 14 point game then. At least our defense is actually playing defense now. I hope I didn't jinx us. Our defense has three interceptions so far this half, but as I said before, I think I may jinxed us as Wyoming comes up with a nice drive that ended with a touchdown. 31-24 with under three minutes to play in the game. They don't go for an onside kick, so we've got to run the clock down with Phillips' struggling legs. But Phillips can't get us a first down through the ground, so the Cowboys will get one last shot with just over a minute to play, starting at their own 35 yard line. A great start to the drive for our defense knocking down the first two passes, but then they gave up a big 29 yard first down play. Just two plays later, however, Eric Pruitt came up with his second pick of the day and his sixth on the season! This one is over! What an offensive battle with very little defense...well I guess that isn't entirely true with our four picks, but we couldn't put 'em away. We move to 5-2 and sit in fifth place with a 2-2 record.. mauboy
Week 9: 5-2 SDSU @ 4-3 BYU - SDSU by 10 Hopefully this week will be easier on us.. I could use a little relaxation, that's for sure. We get a few players back from academic suspension, so we'll insert them in the second half; that's punishment in addition to missing some games. That'll teach 'em. Promuto needs to have a stellar game again this week... well, he doesn't NEED to, but I'd like him to have one!! 1st Quarter Well, not a great start for Promuto, throwing his first four passes incomplete and Phillips not running ANYWHERE except into the backs of his own linemen. But finally we get something going and settle for a short field goal to take a 3-0 lead with three to play in the first quarter. With one second to spare on the clock, Walker nailed a 49 yard field goal to make it 6-0 as we head into the second quarter. To get to the field goal, we actually lost yards during our drive. Yuck. We can't get much going, but we're still winning and our defense is actually showing up so far. 2nd Quarter Five minutes into the second, BYU gets some points finally, three points to make it 6-3 to continue this ugly, ugly affair. We're now at 154 yards of offense for the day!!! But that's only because we just put together a 94 yard drive that resulted in a 44 yard touchdown pass to Green. 13-3. George Green gets his second touchdown of the day just four plays later.. on a punt return. He returned it 71 yards for the touchdown to make it 20-3. Who needs offense when you have defense and special teams? LB Bennett makes it 27-3 with a 17 yard interception returned for a touchdown. This game is getting out of hand quite quickly. That'll be the end of a very strange half. 27-3. 165 yards to BYU's 70 so far this game. Not much to watch besides defense and ST's. 3rd Quarter Crazy. Brandon White comes in and takes three carries for 36 yards to set up a 1 yard touchdown run for Phillips who makes it 34-3. White, eh? Might have to start using him over the struggling Phillips. [Fast Forward] 4th Quarter The final score would be 41-13 as White continued to play well for the rest of the game.. for the most part. 12 carries for 81 yards for White.. I think that merits for a start next week for the kid. Phillips didn't do so hot, 25 carries for 46 yards. Ouch. The defenses must be keying on him, or somethin! Promuto had another good game, connecting for two touchdowns to Green. mauboy
Week 11: 4-2 Colorado St @ 5-2 SDSU - Aztecs by 7 We get two more home games before our bye week, then we finish off the season with New Mexico. We can definitely close out the season 3-0! But first we have to beat the second place team, CSU! The Rams are tied with Utah with only one loss. TCU is 5-0 in conference play and face off with Utah this week. Big, big week this week. Both teams today are similar, top ten defenses and average offenses. Let's get it done! 1st Quarter CSU goes three and out and we go three and into the endzone for six. George Green gets a rifle of a throw from Promuto from 47 yards out to get a quick TD! 7-0 early on. Just a few minutes later, Promuto stays insane! 5/5 passing, 140 yards, 2 touchdowns, his second touchdown pass to Barber from 29 yards out. Crazy, yo! 14-0. The rest of the quarter, however, goes down quite quietly. Promuto thought he was so invincible at 8 of 8 passing, but threw a pick at midfield. That'll teach him. Heh. 2nd Quarter CSU gets on the board with a field goal to make it 14-3. Ten minutes left in the half. The Rams get three more midway through the second quarter to make it 14-6. Our offense is not clicking at all, and Phillips, who I thought I could trust to start today, is absolutely crappy. That's all for him for the day. THe rest of the half goes down with nothing to please the fans. 14-6 as we go into halftime. Our running game is nil no matter who is running the ball. 3rd Quarter Three touchdown passes for Promuto as he hits his third different WR in the endzone, this time Mike Black. 21-6. The rest of the quarter is boring as hell for both teams as the defenses are coming up big on both sides. 21-6 as we head into the final quarter. 4th Quarter CSU exposes our weak secondary for the first time today, pretty much, and they get six out of it. 21-12 as they fail to get the two point conversion! Still two scores ahead as we start the fourth. We get the ball back following a punt with six minutes to play. That would be all we need to do to put the game away... to run down the clock down to one minute and kick a field goal to make it 24-12 as we coast to victory! TCU beats Utah 24-21 in a thriller! TCU stays undefeated in conference play and this makes it a 3-way tie for second place, CSU, UTAH and us. We've got the easiest foes in the final weeks of the season. We played pretty well. Our offense played a little better towards the end of the game and our defense only let up 350 yards, so, we're happy there. mauboy
Week 12: 3-4 UNLV @ 7-2 SDSU - Aztecs by 11, baby This should be an easy-peasy week. Promuto will hopefully have a big game, to continue his good season. Phillips is getting another chance to start, because he is the better athlete of our two backs this year. Hopefully he'll step it up big for us, too. 1st Quarter Promuto gets hurt early on and it's my decision to keep him benched for the game because we dont' want to risk too much against an easy opponent. The decision didn't seem to be paying off so far as the first quarter went scoreless. I can't think of what to run, ah well. Still plenty of game to go. 2nd Quarter Bam Bam Brister hits Green in the endzone on fourth and goal from the two yard line. Whew! 7-0 as we get the scoring going. Yuck. UNLV ties it up with a 61 yard touchdown. Damn it. We don't get a whole lot going until we force a punt and start near midfield. We get close to the endzone, and close enough for Walker to give us a 10-7 lead as time expired in the first half. 3rd Quarter Phillips pulls in a pass from Phillips and gets into the endzone from 23 yards out. 17-7. The Rebels answer back eventually with a field goal to make it 17-10. But Phillips comes up big with a nice 38 yard touchdown run to make it 24-10! Oooh, yeah, baby. The real Phillips is back, baby?? 4th Quarter Holy crap, a whole bunch of punting back and forth is what the fourth quarter is all about. That would be the final score as we gently put UNLV away. 24-10, Phillips finally gets another 100+ yard game. Brister did a nice job in place of Brister. We move to 8-2 with one more game to go... against New Mexico. mauboy
Award Finalists Promuto has been named a finalist for the GOLDEN ARM AWARD! He has 26 TD's with only four picks this season. DE Mecklenburg has been quietly putting up a great season and has been named a finalist for the DISRUPTER AWARD! He's got 12 sacks on the season. We've got one more game this season.. and that's going to be played tomorrow.
mauboy
Week 14: 8-2 SDSU @ 2-8 New Mexico - SDSU by 10 We should have absolutely no problem winning this one, but we'll still treat them like they're Utah. Promuto will get the nod along with Phillips. Lets close out the season with a solid win! Waddya say? 1st Quarter Midway through the first quarter, SS Eric Pruitt comes up with this eighth pick of the season.. and this one was probably his most tiring as he returned it 85 yards for the touchdown!!! 7-0 as Pruitt opens up HUUUGE. Promuto comes up with his first touchdown pass of the day, this one to Green. 14-0 as we get our second touchdown after the fumble deep in our territory by UNM. 2nd Quarter Throughout the second quarter, we pick up two field goals before the half comes to an end. 20-0 at the half. Our defense is playing FANTASTIC! 3rd Quarter Promuto hits Barber in the endzone for six more points, 27-0. 4th Quarter The fourth quarter went by very quickly as New Mexico kept putting together nice drives that ended with nothing. They caught up to us in total yards, but, doesn't matter as we continued our shutout until the end!!! What a great game, defensively. I'm so proud of our guys today. Phillips was the man! 160 some yards with no touchdowns though... but we won, that's what matters. mauboy
Season Finished We finished the season 9-2! Our second best season since I've been coaching here. Promuto was they key. Phillips was key in some games as well. But our defense was really the biggest key, Pruitt finished the year with 9 picks and Mecklenburg with 12 sacks, so, some big players contributed all around this year. Before Week 15 passed by we were getting some love from the GDCS computer polls, but not from anybody else. Then Week 15 passed and there we were, sitting at #25 in the GDCS! Utah beat us in the regular season, but the game has us listed higher than them in the Standings, so we finished second in the conference standings(even though it might not be true.. heheh). We go into the bowl season on a 5 game win streak. HOpefully we can win it this year and go into the next season riding high! Week 16 is here and the awards will be named following the Saturday games. Award Ceremony APPARENTLY I missed Pruitt's name in the BALL HAWK Award because... he fricken won it, baby!! That stud sophomore... yeeeeaaahhh! The other two finalists, Mecklenburg and Promuto both came up short. End of Season We finish the regular season ranked 24 and 25 in the human polls and we jump to 22 in the GDCS while the computers rank us at 18! Not too shabby for a small prestige school. Bowl Bound Nebraska ruins #1 Oklahoma's undefeated season by whomping them in their conference championship game 41-17. Ouch. The San Francisco Bowl has extended us an invitation to take on Washington State during week 19. Yowza! That will be a great game! They've got a good offense with a decent defense, so we'll have to be on our best game to win it! I'm excited. More excited than last season at least! lol
mauboy
Bowl Game: 9-2 SDSU vs 7-4 Washington St - EVEN Wow. Even spread. Who'll win? Will it stay close? I don't think so. Promuto will have a chance to SHINE today. The WSU defense is pretty good, but they can be beat, deep especially, so we may need to change our offense up a little. Our defense has played well pretty much all season, so we won't change up things too much. I'm nervous! 1st Quarter Not a good start for our offense as we go three and out from way back to the 10 yard line, so, WSU's ball near midfield after the punt. Boooooom! Mecklenburg gets a huge sack to force the Cougars to punt. With 8 minutes to go in the first quarter, we get our first shot at some points with a 46 yard field goal... and Walker knocks it in! 3-0. The Aztecs are the first to strike! The Cougars' drive ends after one first down and it's our ball again! Woot. I'm feeling good about this game. On 2nd and 8 we run a screen pass to Phillips who pulls it in and uses his blockers well to gain 64 yards before he was finally tackled! NIIIIICE! We're in field goal range already, two plays into the drive. A few plays later Promuto connects with Lewis in the endzone to make it 10-0! !! ! ! The crowd is going crazy! The Mountain West fans are getting excited too as the conference hasn't been playing well so far this offseason. 0-2, Utah and TCU already lost their games last week. 2nd Quarter WSU answers back with a touchdown of their own. They converted some nice first downs and eventually got into the endzone on a three yard carry. 10-7. We go strolling down the field before stopping at the 30 yard line with a 4th and 4, we decide to kick a field goal.. and it's blocked, but for a reason, because the defense was offsides! 1st and 10! Boom! BAMMMMM!! Touchdown, Barber! Promuto to Barber on 3rd and Goal from 9 yards out. 17-7 as we get close to nine minutes left in the half. What a strange play! A strange play that works in our favor! LB Chad Bennett did two things on this pass play from WSU. He forced the quarterback out of the pocket, but he dodged the raging linebacker but then airmailed the ball and Bennett was able to get under it to pick it off! OOoooOOoOOh, yeah! 1st and 10, Aztec ball. Brister will come in as Promuto continues to get a little hurt. He'll sit out for the rest of the half. Guh, I hope this doesn't hurt us. AAaaaAAAGH! 3rd and 8 and we run a screen to Phillips who misses the ball and it floated into the hands of the defense who returned it 50 yards for a touchdown! Ouchhhh! 17-14 as we inch closer to half time. Still plenty of time for us to get some more points though. Plenty of time indeed, we had three shots to the endzone from the 9 yard line but failed on all three of them to bring Walker out for an easy field goal, which he made to make it 20-14 as we head into halftime! 3rd Quarter NOooo.. Cougars open the half up with a touchdown.. on 3rd and 11 on the 27 yard line and they connect for a 27 yard touchdown play against our pass defense. Damn it! 21-20, WSU takes the lead. The Cougar lead doesn't last long as Walker gets his third field goal of the day to move to 3 for 3(well, 3 for 4..). 23-21. Our defense needs to make a big play on this drive! I'm not feeling so hot anymore. Again, the lead changes. 24-23 as WSU can't be stopped.. well, can't be stopped before they get too close for a field goal. Yucky. With under two minutes to play in the third, we set up to punt away and we do... but one thing was different from every other punt return.. they fumbled it! And we picked it up! First down and ten for Promuto and the rest of the offense. Time to take the lead back as we start at the 34 of WSU. 4th Qarter We do take advantage of the turnover.. big advantage! Promuto gets his third TD pass of the day, this one to Green, his big man! 29-24 as we set up for two points....ergghh. We come up short on the two point try and it'll stay 29-24 with twelve minutes to go in the game. After letting up some big plays early on in the drive, the defense comes up big with a few deflections and a big sack from big Mack to force a punt with ten to play. This game is officially starting to turn CRAAAAZZYYY(thanks Gnarls Barkley). WSU gets a huge punt return to bring it back to where we punted from, the 34 yard line. They get two first downs but that's it. They move in close enough to get a field goal and they do. 29-27. Yeek! Now that extra point would've helped. Hindsight. Five minutes to go! TIme to put this one away with the legs of Phillips, who's got over 100 yards on the day. That didn't last long. Three and out after two runs for a total of 1 yard and a 6 yard pass play. Ouch. 3:50 left for WSU. C'mon DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE! Listen to that crowd! 16 yard run for the Cougars shuts the crowd up in a hurry, but two plays later the defense gets ready for the 3rd and 5 play near midfield! HUGE PLAY HERE! 2:39 left to go. Let's go DEFENSE! YESSSS! Incomplete and they punt it away. We'll get just under two minutes to work the clock down! Eeek. A loss of one. Eek a gain of TEN! 3rd and 1, 1:11 left. Wooooowwww! This could be it right here, right now! Up the middle with Phillips... Phillips gets tripped up at the line, but stays on his feet for a first down and more! THIS ONE IS OOOOOVVVVVVVVVERRRR!!!! WWWEEEE AARRE THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WOOOORLD! At least our world! 10-2 is our record for the season. What a great year. Woot. Our defense was up for the task today as we pretty much did what we had done all year long. STUFFED 'EM HARD! OOoooOOoOh, yeah. mauboy
Season to remember We finish the season 10-2. We don't finish higher than 20 in any of the polls, surprisingly. Dang it, y'know. Evualation Team Performance: B Talent: C Recruiting: B Board Expectations: A Prestige: A Overall: B+ We should get credited for doing so well with a C talent team, not descredited. Oh, well. Our prestige level goes up six points! Nice. We've got nothing to worry about with declaring underclassmen, so that's good. Utah may lose their Stud QB, Echols, to the NFL though. We gain $25,000 for our recruiting budget and for a new offensive coordinator. We won't be able to improve much with a coach after firing our previous guy, who was red in every developing category. Ugh. Now we get a good coach, but we'll have to grossly underpay him. Next year we'll offer him a good chunk more.
mauboy
New Offensive Coordinator We actually get a very good OC for a very cheap price, 425,000. He's green or better in each developing category, which is important to me! I'm PSYCHED for this guy to train our offensive players. Transfers Remember last year, we got some big OT names, well this year I think it's important to pick up defensive backs.. lol. We nab a TE, FB, and DT. We lose one of our big linebackers to Stanford. Dang. Recruiting: Week One-Three Nothing going on here. We don't have a lot of money to give out this year, so we're going after the big boys! We've got some NICE talent looking to come to our school, including two top ten recruits! Awesome. Recruiting: Week Four Nothing here. This may be one of our worst recruiting seasons ever; although I do remember some pretty horrid sessions in the past. It could be that we're so good now that nobody that's 'good' wants to come here. The great players, however, still don't want to come. The two top tens committed elsewhere, so now we've got our eye on two top 100's. Weeks Five and Six Still nothing through six weeks. I'm starting to get a little discouraged.. but then I remember how good we are!!! Seriously. Wait until you see our team on opening day; especially on the defensive side of the ball(besides CB :( ) Week Seven Sheesh. We continue our dry recruiting season. Week Eight Is week eight our lucky week? We get two above avergae corners along with a decent quarterback. Hopefully these guys will be ready for opening day, the CB's I mean. Week Nine We get two more players. I'll put up the numbers on each guy after this week. Final Week of Recruiting The following recruits ended up coming to San Diego State: CB Brooks Brinker, 4-stars S.E. Burroughs (Ridgecrest, CA) National Rank: 400, Regional: 76, Position: 34 QB Kevin Walter, 4-stars Santa Ana (Santa Ana, CA) National Rank: 284, Regional: 53, Position: 20 CB Ethan Kearse, 3-stars Santa Ynez Valley Union (Santa Ynez, CA) National Rank: 295, Regional: 55, Position: 22 FS Clark Simmons, 3-stars Pflugerville (Pflugerville, TX) National Rank: 343, Regional: 73, Position: 24 CB LeRoy McNeal, 3-stars Cody (Cody, WY) National Rank: 521, Regional: 97, Position:
mauboy
Post Training #71 recruiting class, not as bad as I thought we'd be with only five recruits. Hey, I'm happy enough. Controversy: At quarterback, Brister improved himself in the offseason and he's got a good arm, but no speed whatsoever. Meanwhile, Promuto is a senior and has plenty of legs to move around the backfield to throw the ball. Brister has a better all around arm and he just might be the starter this year. Yikes! Also, it was a slight dissapointment to see that neither of our quarterbacks really improved... ah, well. At running back we've got four legitimate players who could potentially start for us this year. Probably not Todd Smith, just cuz he pissed me off in the past. Phillips looks to be the front runner with White right behind him. White will definitely get the short yardage situations while Phillips on 1st and 2nd. George Green may be one of the best receivers in the conference this year. The defense is pretty straightforward. There isn't much controversy there, except maybe for the corners who will be fighting for a spot. lol
