BYU is a weak foe, but it is in their home stadium. I don't think their team has enough talent to give us too much of a scare though. 1st Quarter 12:39 We dominate on the ground on our first drive, and Herman King gets the TD with an excellent 34 yard burst straight up the heart of the Cougar defense. 7-0 Rams. 8:48 I thought they were weak...but this. Reyes now goes 68 yards for a TD! We have 2 breakaway rushing TD carries in 4 minutes now. 3:09 After 18 carries for 174 yards, we finally throw a pass on 3rd-7. It gains 12 yards, and we have 1st and Goal. 1:00 Their D manages to hold us, and we drop in a FG to make it 17-0 Rams. 171 rushing yards for the rams after 1 quarter. That stat says it all. 2nd Quarter 7:49 They get a 52 yard TD strike to get back in the game. 17-7 Rams. We need a better secondary, they are always making plays like that. 3:25 Casillias adds another short field goal to get the lead up to 20-7 Rams. Reyes is over 100 yards rushing now. :24 Red Zone Interception by the Rams to keep our lead at 13. They were at our 6 yard line with their suddenly pretty good passing attack, but a misguided throw to the end zone preserves our lead. At halftime, we have a nice lead. Total yards are almost even, but we have dominated with a ground game, and their passing game has been more hit and miss. We are confident about this game--the running will run down the clock fast. 3rd Quarter 10:58 We miss a 4th-down conversion at their 35. 7:35 We punt, but they return it 35 yards and they get it at our 45. 6:41 They turn it over, and we get it back in decent field position. 1:26 Our latest LONG drive has now led us past 30 minutes time of possession--and it is still only the 3rd quarter. We have run 61 plays to their 31. I love a smashmouth attack when it works. :36 Our kicker misses a 46 yard attempt. 4th Quarter 12:29 Holding call gives them new life in our red zone. 11:00 A sack keeps them out of the end zone--but the FG try is in easily. 20-10 Rams. 10:14 47 yard completion to Johnny Cantu. We are now at their 30 yard line. We were hoping to get 1 big passing play, and we just did--back to the ground attack now to milk the clock. 9:28 Davis is picked on 3rd down and long, so they get it back at their 20. 7:26 They punt after we hold them on 3rd-3. This game is almost secure now. 1:22 They are in deep trouble, but do complete a 13 yard pass on 4th-10 to get to the red zone--still needing 2 scores to have a chance. :36 4th and Goal falls incomplete! 20-10 Rams is the final score. Davis didn't have a great game: less than 200 yards passing, no touchdowns, 1 interception--but the running backs carried us. Reyes ran for well over 100 yards and the nice TD, and Herman King was also a force at times on the ground. Ramfan77
San Diego State (4-4) @ Colorado State (4-2) This game has added significance for SDSU since they need this game for all intensive purposes if they want to go bowling--this or Utah, as they also still have Wyoming and they need 2 out of 3, and Utah is ridiculously good. We are playing pretty well now, and will try to ride our running game against their not so good rushing defense. We are 4 point favorites. 1st Quarter 7:48 16 plays, 80 yards, and FB Edward Schaefer gets a 2 yard TD run on 4th and Goal from the 1. We establish ourselves with a dominant ground-based drive. 7:06 We try a surprise onside kick which doesn't work. They get good field position. 4:00 They get a TD to tie it up. 7-7 tie now. 0:00 Our kicker leaves a 42 yard try short. Strange for such a highly-rated kicker. 2nd Quarter 6:08 Our kicker makes his next try from 41 yards away, and we lead 10-7. Reyes is over 60 yards already and is having another nice game. 1:26 They lose a fumble at midfield, and it goes from them driving in the 2 minute drill to us having a shot at points. :23 23 yard TD pass to Robinson and we turn the turnover into 7 big points. 17-7 Rams. 3rd Quarter 12:48 They get a 60 yard pass which quickly leads to a TD. 17-14 Rams. 3:58 A long drive leads to a short 28 yard FG which is good. 20-14 Rams. 1:38 They shank a punt to just past midfield, then Chas Robinson gets open and makes a one-handed grab for a 38 yard gain. We set up in the red zone now. 1:03 Howard Davis has seized control of this game, now throwing an 8 yard TD pass to Kip Campbell. 4th Quarter 12:48 We kick a bad punt, they set up at our 38. 11:18 They make a 40 yard FG to cut our lead to 17. 7:37 4th-2 at their 32, Herman King goes left for 3 yards. We can now run more clock, and a TD would end the game. 4:32 We fumble it away near the goal line, but it is too late to matter. 2:42 Ronald Williams returns a punt 68 yards for a TD! Campbell catches the 2pt conversion play, and we lead 35-17. The running game ended up being nothing special today, but it got us off to a nice start, and then Davis took over and took control of their defense throwing for almost 300 yards.
