I have simmed as many as 10 years and still haven't been able to get my prestige to move or to be able to consistantly get better recruits. I will get a good year or maybe 2 and then right back to a year where I get nothing but 1 star recruits. There must be a factor that I am overlooking. Perhaps coordinators?
it took me less than 10 years, but I was working with a middle of the pack major conference team so all I needed was to start making inroads with some winning seasons and I started to get some guys, I imagine it would take longer to build up from lower, I am just about to the point of the top recruits starting to pay off too, hoping to win a national championship in year

mcsimfan
I have been able to pull up a 30 prestige school to 45 over a 18 year period. The biggest thing I have found for building up a program is development. Be sure to get an OC and DC that can develop talent. Even if they cannot scout very well that is fine. It doesnt matter if he can scout becuase if the players do not get any better, then you are still in the same place you started.
Well, I simmed a few more years last night and recruiting is definitely less important with good coaches. I was able to be competetive and have winning seasons despite the fact that I had 2 straight recruiting classes with just almost all 1 star recruits. Those winning seasons have now started to get me a few more 2 star recruits. I think coaching is definitely the way to go in these mid major conferences. You have to build up what you have instead of crying over what you didn't get.

FranklinNoble
What's the trick to getting transfers? I always make offers, and always get rejected. I have never had a player transfer over...

C-Bailey24
Also the proper gameplan is very important. With a good gameplan you can easly see you win total go up by 2 wins a year. The difference between 3 straight 6-5 seasons compared to 8-4 seasons can be huge in building your program.
Do you use the gameplans given by the game or do u put together a full gameplan yourself from week to week? I ask this because i'm coaching Wake Forest and with the exception of 1 year i can't seem to get past 6 or 7 wins despite recruiting pretty good talent year after year. I'm just thinking maybe better gameplans can get me over that hump.

With OU, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Kentucky have worked. On occasion, I have been able to remember the name of a recruit from the prevbious year that showed some interest in y program. That usually only happens if the guy has a really unusual name.

Each of these use different formations and plays. Then after I decide which one I am going to use for the season, ill tweak it a little. If I have a good pass catching TE, then ill make sure to get some extra passes going his way, same thing for HB, but if neither can catch ill make sure to not have many passes going in there direction. Basicly build your gameplan around your teams strenght. I have gone from an air it out attack one year with a stud QB, then the next year primary run since his backup transfered, and the true freshman who came in just wasnt ready for the big time yet. Build your gameplan attack to your teams strenght, this will make a huge difference.

Select that, and it will tell you if they are Low, Med, High, or Very High on Interest in you. If they are all Low and you want to try and get a transfer, than focus on your region and cross your fingers.

Ramfan77
It is possible, but it takes awhile. My Indiana team is up to 6-6 now and has risen from 11th in conference, where it usually is, up to a tie for 8th, and we actually have a decent team now--read the diary--but I think it will be in the upper half of the conference soon. The team now has mostly 3 star players a couple of 4 stars now, after almost all 2 star players when I started.

If your team prestige is too low you might not get to much interest and if it is too high you might see the same thing. At least this is the way it played out for me. Also I thought there was an option what preferences a recruit has in terms of playing time and winning so those would be factors as well.

mcsimfan
Transfers I have also noticed that if you have a team with a lower prestige rating that isn't likely to win a large number of games that it pays to look at the transferring player's interest in playing time vs winning. Both of those ratings are on the interest page. It has helped me get transfers. I am still quite frustrated by the recruiting AI, however. Even after decent years my presitige creeps up just barely and in the following recruiting season, I still can't get any more than 1 or 2 good players to show interest. I seem to be stuck in the rut of needing my good coaches to develop the players. That all falls apart if I have a really bad recruiting season (which seems to be very common). The AI has allowed a couple of the other teams in the MAC to progress to the point where they are now getting players that would have traditionally gone to Big 10 schools. Me and the other MAC schools are now getting crushed by these powerhouses year after year. I am obviously still missing an important part of recruiting, increasing prestige, and building up my program.

Dave Hansen
I believe you can also help to build a program thru more wins by coaching each game yourself vs. just simming. A couple of thoughts: * This past season I had 2 OL a TE a DE and an ILB that were not starters, but were role or situational players that I would bring in for perhaps just for one play. * I pay very close attention to my opponent's in-game injuries that result in one of his players no longer being in the game. One to three guys going out per game is not uncommon. A star RB or great CB, etc. will possibly allow me to change my play calling to take advantage of the situation. The reverse is true for my own injuries. I may have to go to more zone coverage if my PCB is out that was a strong one on one cover guy. * Onsides kickoffs and fake punts/FG are an options in-game. Of course, the downside to this approach is the actual time involved to get thru a few seasons and see the results.:D

mcsimfan
Thanks, Dave I have tried playing the games myself and usually get about the same results. About the only thing that seems better when I play the game is that I turn the ball over less. That seems like it should translate into winning more games, but it seems I am not and better at game planning on offense or defense than the AI (I usually pay top $ for the best coaches). This game is really a challenge. I will keep at it. I love a good challenge.
