St. Louis Wrestling Club: Return to the Glory Days

Recommended Posts

I just finished reading Wrestling at the Chase and was thinking about doing a St. Louis diary because I hadn't seen one. I didn't even know this one was out there! I'm looking forward to going back to the beginning of it and reading it.
Hope it's alright if I predict the winners? If not then let me know and I won't do it again.
Oh, it is highly encouraged, Outlaw. I know it is harder to do it since I don't actually put down the card in text, but I like it when people give me predictions. It shows that people actually care about the event.

Wrestling at the Chase Results Saturday, Week 3, February, 1983
Wrestling at the Chase Results Saturday, Week 3, February, 1983 Location: The Chase Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri Attendance: 1,000 Rufus R. Jones vs. Bobby Duncum Sr. vs. This was a great opening match for Wrestling at the Chase. Rufus R. Jones and Bobby Duncum Sr. both showed their best stuff and the crowd ate it up. This has potential to be a better match, but with the crowd just settling into their seats, the crowd didn't really get to fully enjoy the match for what it was, a wrestling clinic. Rufus R. Jones got a fair amount of offense in on Duncum Sr., but Duncum Sr. didn't let him get too much in. Bobby Duncum Sr. plays a convincing heel in the ring, and the crowd really gave him a piece of their mind. With the crowd against him, Bobby Duncum Sr. was able to pull out the victory over Rufus R. Jones via a powerful Piledriver. Winner: Bobby Duncum Sr. Overall: C+ Buzz Tyler and Bob Brown vs. Dewey Robertson and Roger Kirby vs. Another staple tag team contest for Wrestling at the Chase. An above average lower-card tag team match is pretty average for the night as most viewers know. Buzz Tyler, Bob Brown, Roger Kirby, and Dewey Robertson are the usuals in these types of matches and it was no shock to the crowd or the viewers at home that they were able to put on a good match. Even though these matches seem repetitive, the crowd eats this stuff up and loves the tag matches that the St. Louis Wrestling Club brings them. The team of Buzz Tyler and Bob Brown, have a lot of experience in the wrestling circuit, but the wrestling ability Roger Kirby and Dewey Robertson bring to the table really made this a good match. But, in this case, experience prevailed with Buzz Tyler and Bob Brown getting the win, when Buzz Tyler planted Dewey Robertson with a powerful Bodyslam. Winners: Buzz Tyler and Bob Brown Overall: C+ Bob Sweetan vs. Butch Reed vs. A decent power display between two hefty loads of men. This is what the word phrase "bone crushing" is all about. Two men that pride themselves in putting their opponent through massive amounts of pain. The match didn't come out very well since the two men got tired a little too quickly. Bob Sweetan, being as out of shape as he is and as old as he is, really didn't match up well in the athletic department with a much more imposing athlete, Butch Reed. Bob Sweetan's one-dimensional style was no match for Butch Reed's versatile wrestling ability. And that versatility got Butch Reed the victory, when he hit Bob Sweetan with an impactful Top-Rope Clothesline. Winner: Butch Reed Overall: C Kerry Von Erich and Manny Fernandez vs. Bob Orton Jr. and Crusher Blackwell vs. Now if there was any such thing as a flawless tag team match, this would be it. Four of the St. Louis Wrestling Club's biggest stars all in the same ring and not letting anything hold them back. Kerry Von Erich seemed to be a target of a lot of abuse from the other team. This could have been to get an advantage in that match or later on for the NWA Missouri Heavyweight Title, who knows. The team of Bob Orton Jr. and Crusher Blackwell didn't mix very well since they seemed to have different agendas of how the match should be decided. Now on the other hand, the team of Von Erich and Fernandez was in sync, playing to the crowd, and putting on a show. This in the end got the good guys, Von Erich and Fernandez, the win, as Kerry Von Erich hit Bob Orton Jr. with the Tornado Punch. Winner: Kerry Von Erich and Manny Fernandez Overall: B+ King Kong Bundy vs. King Kong Brody vs. This was as good as the hype made it seem. "The Clash of the King Kongs" was what it was built up to be, a knock down, drag out, brawl of sorts. The two men are physically intimidating people, who, outside of each other, have nothing that can even stand in their way. King Kong Brody brought a more toned down style to the match, and this added some much needed pace. King Kong Bundy, being the brute that he is, gave the match a lot of intensity and rattled the ring on many occasions. King Kong Brody did end up showing that he is the true King Kong, when he defeated King Kong Bundy with a Flying Legdrop. Winner: King Kong Brody Overall: B Overall Rating: B
