ECW Abandoned

Recommended Posts

This diary is set right back at the beginning of the introduction of the new ECW brand but with a different take on things. Some of the things that happen with this diary tie in with real life, some don't. Hopefully it'll be quite an interesting read. WWE Breaking News Just days before the first ECW show was due to air, Vince McMahon and Paul Heyman have had a massive falling out. The exact details are unknown at this moment but what is known is that Heyman has left the company effective immediately. What does this mean for the future of the planned new ECW show….

ECW - who's in charge here? It’s being reported that Vince has already given up on his new pet project and the show hasn’t even been aired yet!!! With Heyman gone, many of the ECW roster have demanded their release with only one being granted (their current identity is unknown). Vince has reportedly contacted the Sci-fi network trying to get the show pulled but due to the financial implications of this he has had to come up with another solution. Instead, Vince has promoted from within and placed WWE writer Shawn Smith in joint charge with legendary wrestler and road agent, Terry Funk. Whilst Funk will be in charge of liaising with the roster, Smith will have to cope with the finances and the hiring and firing of employees. With just days to go both their reputations are on the line. Theirs is not an enviable task…

Kurt Angle gone!!! When it was announced that a worker had already been granted his release, no one ever thought it would be Kurt Angle. Apparently Kurt was struggling with injuries and didn’t want his image to be tarnished by the disaster in waiting new ECW. Although Kurt hasn’t announced any future plans, people have been speculating that he will soon show up on either RAW or Smackdown in the very near future and that this is all a work. With rumours flying around regarding the futures of Rob Van Dam and Sabu, the new ECW brand is in disarray with the debut show tomorrow night still having no matches announced.

Vince at war with his own brand? With the ECW debut tonight, Vince has withdrawn all WWE backing for the new brand. With the roster in disarray a lot of people feel betrayed, especially the new management structure. All ties with the developmental promotions have been severed and Vince has almost declared war on this, effectively new and stand alone, promotion.

Matches booked for the first night In a very rushed together card the debut of ECW on Sci-fi looks like a massive disaster already. One highlight however is an ECW title match featuring Rob Van Dam taking on the most imposing figure in wrestling – The Big Show in a match which could give the promotion a stay of execution. Van Dam announces that just because Heyman has left the company and Vince has abandoned the promotion doesn’t mean that everything is gonna go to s***. The man standing before them is the whole damn show and the loyal ECW fans are in for a treat. Van Dam promises nothing has changed and come the end of tonight, nothing will have changed in terms of the title situation as well and this is a promise from “Mr Pay Per View himself, Mr Rod Van Dam” (to a pretty decent reaction from the crowd) Rating – A vs. Justin Credible vs CM Punk Both men got a reasonable pop, Credible due to the fact that he’s a former ECW Champion and Punk due to his growing reputation. The match itself was pretty run of the mil with Punk having control of much of the match. Punk eventually got the pinfall after hitting the Pepsi Plunge and getting the debut victory to really build up some momentum. Winner – CM Punk Rating - C- ECW’s newest diva, Kelly, makes her way out and performs a strip tease to the *****cat Dolls’ Buttons - much to the delight of the crowd… Rating – A (damn she’s hot!) The match itself was a fairly dull affair except for The Sandman beating the hell out of Mamaluke with a singapore cane before picking up the pinfall and getting the victory. Winners – Stevie Richards & The Sandman Rating – C- Backstage we see Guido, Mamaluke and Big Guido stumbling back to their changing room. Out of nowhere Hardcore Holly and Test jump them, beating them down to the ground. With the three down and out, Test and Holly take the mike and blast Vince McMahon for abandoning them in this god forsaken promotion. They state they won’t take this abandonment lying down and are determined to take their rage out on any ECW member which they can get their hands on. Rating – D for the attack and C+ for the subsequent promo. vs. Sylvester Terkay vs. Sabu. (ladder match) Terkay didn’t get much of a reaction for his ECW debut but the crowd went berserk for Sabu. Sabu dominated the match and put on a real showing, pity Terkay didn’t sell very well. In the end Sabu hit the Arabian Facebuster and picked up the victory. Winner – Sabu Rating – C Next up we are shown tonight’s challenger for the ECW World title match (up next), The Big Show. Show states that measuring 7 foot tall and weighting over 500 lbs he is the most biggest and most dominant wrestler in this crappy little promotion. Show states that even though he doesn’t care much for ECW or the title belt, a victory tonight will convince Vince to come and take him back to where he belongs – The WWE… (loud boos from the crowd) Rating – B+ vs. Big Show vs. Rob Van Dam (c) For The ECW World Title Both wrestlers came out of a loud reaction from the crowd (boos for Big Show, cheers for RVD). The match started off with Show dominating RVD using his size advantage to full advantage. After a kick out of nowhere by RVD that sent Show crashing to the mat, Van Dam took full advantage of the no DQ rules and began beating the hell out of Show with a chair before setting a table up in the middle of the ring. Unfortunatley Show recovers and chokeslams RVD through the table. 1…2…kick out. Out of nowhere RVD kicks out!!! As Show remonstrates with the referee, Van Dam slowly recovers and hits Show with a Van Daminator. RVD places a chair over Show and heads up to the top rope, albeit rather slowly, and hits the Frog Splash on Show. 1…2…3, Rob Van Dam retains the ECW World Title. Winner and still ECW World Champion – Rob Van Dam Rating – B+ Having picked up the victory, Van Dam celebrates with the title as the crowd cheer on the ECW Champion after a hard fought match. Rating – A* Overall C+ rating overall, lack of storylines hurt the show, coupled with a lack of decent workers and just a general balls up by the management (only in this diary it’s a couple of months early) Show Analysis. Back To Business After the last ECW show was widely agreed to be a disappointment, management have set about seeking to turn the brand around. A whole host of new signings have been announced featuring a blend of former ECW favourites and several up and coming superstars in waiting. Signings include: Jeff Hardy, Tajiri and Taka Michinoku New Jack And the brightest prospect in the business… Teddy Hart. Disappointing news came in the form of Stone Cold Steve Austin turning down the opportunity to come to ECW in favour of signing with Smackdown. Rumors had been circulating that Austin was set to appear on ECW shows as an authority figure but evidently plans will have to be altered.

ECW in Disarray (Again) Just when it seemed things were looking up, along comes another headache for the promotion. Current ECW World Champion Rob Van Dam has cut a deal with Vince allowing him to jump to Smackdown along with, even more interestingly Terry Funk!!! Vince is clearly seeking to destroy his creation by stealing not only the promotion’s champion but also the joint booker and road agent – leaving Shawn Smith to run the promotion on his own. On a more positive note however, having been a part of the WWE company, the new ECW possesses a whole host of copyright names and material which are also owned by the former parent company. Whilst this may seem a very small point, Smith has stated that he will attempt to utilise this in the most effective way possible with there being talks about using the “biggest” of the copyrighted materials although no one is quite sure what this is referring to.

A big shake up in the industry It seems the recent introduction of the ECW promotion and all the recent issues surrounding it have led to the biggest shake up seen in the history of the sport. Vince, having gone through a lot of stress with the ECW saga, has handed head booking duties of RAW to Eric Bischoff. Bischoff followed this up by signing Goldberg, Lesnar and Rhino among others. The signing of Rhino is a massive blow to ECW considering his past and the hopes that he would consider jumping to this revitalised ECW. Smackdown meanwhile have gone back to the glory days adding Hulk Hogan and The Rock to their rosters. However, the attempted signing of Rob Van Dam has hit a snag and with the ECW show just days a way, RVD looks set to appear in ECW for at least one more appearance. ECW have gone out and signed several new talents (including a referee) with the biggest shock being the return of Ken Shamrock to professional wrestling. There is however no sign of the greatly needed authority figure or any other major names that are needed to give the promotion the boost it needs.

Matches Booked for ECW on Sci-Fi During the week Big Show issued a challenge to Rob Van Dam to lay the title on the line once more, this time in a cage match. With rumours surrounding Van Dam’s possible departure to Smackdown, will Van Dam be taking the title with him? Tonight we will also see the return of the Chair Swinging Maniacs to ECW as they take on two of the most frustrated wrestlers in the promotion – Test and Hardcore Holly. Considering they have been complaining all week about being left to rot in ECW, surely being overlooked in the recent ‘talent grab’ won’t leave them in a much happier mood. In a tail of two debuts for ECW, former WWE superstars Orlando Jordan and the “World’s Most Dangerous Man” Ken Shamrock will go one on one. With everyone knowing how important it is to build momentum up quickly in the promotion, neither man will want to lose. Big Show vs. Rob Van Dam (c) for the ECW World Title (yet to be confirmed) Chair Swinging Maniacs (Balls & Axel) vs. Forsaken (Test & Holly) Ken Shamrock vs. Orlando Jordan

Rob Van Dam no shows. With hours to go before the show, head booker Shawn Smith received a parcel and a letter. The letter read: Dear Shawn and ECW, So long suckers, Yours sincerely, Mr WWE, Rob Van Dam. In the parcel Van Dam’s title belt. Great!. Yet another worker turning their back on us. No matter, by the end of tonight the audience won’t even remember who Rob Van Dam was. Have fun being misused on Smackdown – think he’ll get a title shot before Hulk or The Rock? Show announces that effective immediately Rob Van Dam has relinquished his title belt but not because he’s decided to leave ECW and join Smackdown. See Mr Run Very Quickly Away has decided to relinquish his title belt so that he doesn’t have to face 500 lbs of Big Show tonight. Show is in a giving mood however and doesn’t want to simply be handed the title belt, no, he wants to earn it and offers an open challenge to anyone in the back who thinks he’s man enough to go toe to toe with a seven foot monster. After Axel countered a double team move out of nowhere, he tagged in Balls who lived up to his team’s name going in swinging his chair. As Axel and Balls lined up a double chair shot out on Holly, of nowhere Test hit Balls with the big boot and Holly hit Axel with the Alabama Slam to pick up the pinfall. Winners – Forsaken After the match, Test and Holly take the two chairs and really go to town on their opponents, opening them both up after repeated chair shots to the head. Ratings – C for the match, C- for the attack afterwards. Shamrock was very efficient and it wasn’t long before he proved to live up to his nickname after locking in an ankle lock forcing Jordan to tap. Winner – Ken Shamrock. After the match we cut to backstage where another new ECW signing, Lance Storm, is shown watching Shamrock’s match up with him being visibly unimpressed. The finish came after Kidman hit the Shooting Star press on Storm only for Jeff to hit the twist of fate on Kidman before following up with the swanton bomb for the victory Winner – Jeff Hardy Rating – C- Big Show makes his way to the ring and regrets to inform the audience that no one has accepted his challenge to replace RVD in the match up tonight. Chris Jericho comes out to a massive pop from the crowd who go crazy to see the returning Jericho. With The Big Show clearly unhappy he argues that the time limit on the challenge has expired and… Shut the hell up you assclown. Y2J, Chris Jericho, is finally back in the ring and all you want to say is how a time limit has expired. As far as I know this show still has time to run so what we’re gonna do is lower our little cage down, step inside and the ayatollah of rock and rolla is gonna show the fans what they’ve been missing as I win the ECW World title tonight. How do I know I’m gonna win you ask? I know I’m gonna win because ECW is Jericho and tonight I’m gonna do it for all the Jericholics out there in the crowd! Rating for accepted challenge – B+ vs. The Big Show vs. Chris Jericho for the ECW World Title in a steel cage (pin and submission only) Again Show tried to overpower his opponent, seeking to end the match quickly only for Jericho to fight back, feeding off the energy from the crowd, knocking the big man down with a spinning wheel kick before going for the Moonsault going for a quick victory. Unfortunately for him, Show powered out and it wasn’t long before he was on the offensive, flooring Jericho with a massive clothesline. As Show began to climb the cage, he realised he could only win through pinfall or submission and so hit a flying clothesline off the top turnbuckle which sent a massive shudder through the ring. With Show in control he looked to be setting Jericho up for the clothesline only for Jericho to counter. With both men down on the ground it was a battle to get up first. Show was up first and looked to go for the big boot only for Jericho to duck it and try to flip show over and lock in the Walls of Jericho. Show was too strong and looked to be setting Y2J up for the chokeslam when Jericho again managed to counter, flipped Show over and locked in the Walls of Jericho. With nowhere to go for Show, he was forced to tap out, meaning Jericho is the new ECW World Champion!!! After the match Jericho celebrates as the crowd go crazy and show their appreciation for the match they’ve just seen (I think there may even have been a couple of holy s*** chants in the match!) Winner and new ECW World Champion – Chris Jericho Ratings – A for the match and A for the celebration afterwards. Former TNA X Division pioneer Jerry Lyn has joined the company along with living legend, Jake ‘the snake’ Roberts. Both men will be given road agent duties as well as giving advice on whom to give big pushes to. ECW finally has a feeder promotion!!! It’s signed an agreement with CZW for an indefinite period. Whilst no one has yet been sent to the child company, management is going to be trying to utilise this relationship to the maximum. Not much to note in terms of signings with ECW having been fairly quite ever since the signing of Chris Jericho. There are hopes that Jericho will be the spearhead that the promotion needs and on the evidence of last weeks performance there is every chance he could be that man.

The most dangerous man in wrestling has joined ECW but it certainly isn’t Ken Shamrock. That’s right, the crowd are currently looking at only man in the world deserving of the title – Lance Storm, as he will prove in his match against CM Punk. Rating - C+ vs. Lance Storm vs. CM Punk With Punk having already beaten one ECW World Champion, Storm was weary of his ability and showed Punk a lot of respect trying to wear his opponent down but Punk kept coming. Despite the fact that all matches in ECW are under no DQ rules, the match stayed entirely in the ring without any weaponry being used. Surprisingly Punk came close to out wrestling Storm which was something of a shock to the watching crowd. The finish came after Storm countered the Pepsi plunge into a Super Kick and picked up the victory over his somewhat unfortunate opponent. Winner – Lance Storm Rating - C+ Kelly again comes out and performs another strip tease, this time to the Scissor Sisters’ “I Don’t Fell Like Dancing.” Afterwards we are taken backstage to Kelly heading back to her locker where she finds a bouquet of floors left for her with no card and no sign of whom gave them to her. B for the dance and C- for the discovery afterwards. Sandman got a loud pop as he made his way through the crowd to his good old Metallica, cane in hand. There were a lot of impressive spots in the match with Sabu in particular hitting a number of impressive moves. A clothesline from Test on Sandman evened up the match but after Sandman recovered and hit the Russian leg sweep using the cane and Sabu hit the Arabian facebuster on Holly, the match was over and Sabu picked up the victory Winners – Sabu and The Sandman After the match, as Sabu and Sandman celebrate, Test and Holly regroup, nailing their opponents from behind with a double chair shot before beating them down to the ground. With Test and Holly in control, as Test goes to work on The Sandman, Holly slams Sabu through a table set up outside of the ring. Test and Holly stand in the ring, surveying the carnage they have just caused. Ratings – C+ for the match, C for the attack afterwards. ,and When we come back from a break, some very familiar music as out from the back comes Ron Simmons and the Basham Brothers to the old APA theme. Simmons takes the mike and announces that effective immediately the Basham Protection Agency is up and running in the ECW! As Danny tries to take the mike off Simmons, he pushes him away. Simmons states that he’s missed be back in wrestling and now he’s found a way to get back to doing what he does best – having a beer, playing some poker and beating the hell out of any punk who crosses him. This time Doug tries to take the mike and Simmons again pushes him away. Simmons states that things are about to get interesting in ECW as both Bashams try to take the mike off of him leading to a good old fashioned “damn”. Ron throws the mike away and orders his two new stable partners to head to the back. Rating – C vs. Big Show vs. Chris Jericho (c) for the ECW World Title Show and Jericho begin the match by brawling, much to the Big Show’s advantage. However, after a spinning heel kick followed up by a missile drop kick off the top rope, it looked as though Jericho would be leaving the night the same way that he started it; as ECW champion. With the momentum and the crowd firmly behind him, Jericho went for the lionsault only to be nailed from outside the ring by a chair shot by none other that Scott Hall!!! Big Show didn’t need a second invitation and followed this up by chokeslamming Jericho before making the cover and picking up the victory and the ECW World Title Winner and new ECW World Champion – The Big Show After the match Big Show and Scott Hall beat the hell out of Chris Jericho with Hall setting up a table in the middle of the ring as Show chokeslammed Jericho through it. The show closed with Show (title in hand) and Hall standing victorious over a battered Chris Jericho. Ratings – A for the match and B- for the attack afterwards. Overall The show got a B and received a much needed boost to the promotion’s image. The appearance of two legends of the wrestling world (Simmons and Hall) should have got the promotion the attention in the wrestling world that it needed.

425,000 viewers, not our peak but better than last weeks.
Smackdown got a B- and TNA XPlosion got a B which is a little frustrating.
Very happy with the Dreamer and Storm matches, bodes well for the future.
More to follow on the reason for Jericho suddenly dropping the title just one week after winning it.
Damn!!!
Why did Scott Hall get involved?
Kelly’s not very good at acting

ECW – one in one out The sudden arrival of Scott Hall in ECW has also heralded the sudden departure of the biggest draws in the promotion – Chris Jericho! It appears that once Vince realised that Jericho was returning to the sport, Vince decided that he had no option but to sign him up. Considering Jericho had been brought in to lead the promotion forward as RVD’s replacement, this shock departure will only act as yet another blow to the promotion. Turning our attention to Scott Hall, he has finally appeared on a televised ECW event. Several years ago there were plans for him to appear but they were shelved due to a drinking problem. With Hall apparently back on the wagon, he has been brought in to add some star power to the promotion. His signing is rumoured to be just the start of a number of former WCW stars all set to debut in the coming weeks as the promotion desperately tries to find an identity to cling to.

Matches Booked for ECW on Sci-Fi The Big Show is the new ECW champion thanks to Scott Hall’s interference last week but the big question is, why did Hall help Show out and what is Hall doing in ECW? Hopefully some questions will be answered with Show scheduled to take on CM Punk in a non title match up. The night also promises to include it’s standard dash of tag team excellence as The Basham Protection Agency makes its first in ring appearance against the debuting team of Tajiri and Taka Michinoku. With both teams rated very highly by ECW management, the winner will do no harm to their reputation. Another tag match also scheduled will see Forsaken taking on ECW originals Stevie Richards and Tommy Dreamer. With Forsaken having already left a trail of destruction among ECW alumni, Richards and Dreamer will have to bring their A-game tonight. In addition to this the “world’s most dangerous man” Ken Shamrock will go one on one with Justin Credible in singles action. Considering Lance Storms’ outburst regarding Shamrock’s reputation it will be interesting to see whether this will have affected Shamrock in any way. OOC - I'd love to have an original as champion but most of them are involved in storylines already and the one's that aren't don't really justify a shot. As for Punk, I've got plans to put him in the scene but it's gonna take a while. I ain't gonna say anything else at this point but it'll be worth the wait. It's getting kinda frustrating having to change our plans so frequently but oh well... ECW on Sci-Fi Dark Matches Orlando Jordan def. Hall welcomes the crowd to the beginning of a new era in ECW history – the era of Hall! Hall announces that effective last Tuesday, he is running the show here at ECW and there are gonna be some big shake ups. There’s not gonna be any midget champs in this promotion such as Chris Jericho and that is the reason that Jericho has been let go from the company. Hall states that he is a fair man and will give anyone whom shows potential a shot at the ECW World Title but only as long as they earn their shot. This will all start off tonight with the highly rated CM Punk going one on one with the giant standing next to him in the ring. Now although this isn’t a title match, if Punk wins on next weeks ECW he will get a shot at Show’s title. If Punk doesn’t win tonight though kiss any title shots goodbye… Rating – B+ vs. and and Forsaken vs. Stevie Richards and Tommy Dreamer Despite Richards and Dreamer being originals, there are few in the promotion whom can cope with Test and Holly in their current state of minds (as though that can are currently out injured, not expected to return in the next few weeks). Test and Holly isolated Richards in their corner as Holly pummelled him. Despite Richards recovering and tagging in Dreamer whom came in cane swinging it wasn’t enough and eventually Test hit the pumphandle slam on Stevie Richards and picked up the victory. Winners – Forsaken After the match Test and Holly state they are tired of proving once and again that they are the most dominant tag team in not only the ECW but the whole of wrestling and issue an open challenge to any team whom think they are capable of causing a massive upset on next weeks ECW… Rating – C+ for the match and C for the open challenge. vs. Ken Shamrock vs. Justin Credible Despite Lance Storms’ taunts last week, Shamrock was completely focused on the task at hand and set about dismantling Credible with his opponent hardly getting any sort of offence in. After about five minutes of Shamrock domination, Credible almost got some offence in – only for Shamrock to counter into an armbar and pick up the submission victory. Winner – Ken Shamrock After the match Lance Storm comes out applauding Shamrock. Storm states that Shamrock must feel proud having just beaten the promotion’s biggest whipping boy. Storm suggests that Shamrock’s name be changed to “Most overrated wrestler” Ratings – C for the match and C for the taunt afterwards. with vs. and Basham Protection Agency (with Ron Simmons) vs. Taka and Tajiri With Simmons acting as the BPA’s manager, the crowd were firmly behind the Bashams as they carried this momentum into the match. The match up was notable for the amount of face heat the returning Tajiri got as they couldn’t buy him as a heel. Despite the Japanese Buzzsaw getting in a fair amount of offence, Danny Basham picked up the pinfall after hitting Taka with a Brain Damage. Winners – The B.P.A After the match the Bashams are backstage celebrating with Ron Simmons who’s got his cigar out. We see ECW diva Kelly walk past prompting a collective “damn” from the three men. Ratings – C for the match and C- for the celebration and We see Kelly go up to the debuting Sean O’Haire who’s preparing for his match up against Masato Tatanka. Kelly begins flirting with O’Haire, implying that he’s the one whom left her flowers. O’Haire says something cryptic about birds and bees before telling her he’s not her stalker and heads out to the ring. Rating – C- vs. Sean O’Haire vs. Masato Tanaka In a tale of two debutants, this was a candidate for match of the night so far with Tanaka being hugely impressive in the hardcore environment with the two of them brawling outside of the ring for much of the match. The highlight was a Samoan Drop onto the steel steps outside the ring by Tanaka on O’Haire. After this the match up wasn’t very even and Tanaka finished it off with a Wykea Slam to pick up the victory. Winner – Tanaka Rating – C+ After the match Kelly comes out and performs another strip tease. Unfortunately there was a slight wardrobe malfunction which led to a massive increase in viewing figures only for it to be censored by the networks – god damn you Sci-Fi!!! Rating – B+ vs. Big Show vs. CM Punk Despite the fact that no doubt Punk will one day be a main eventer, this match up was too soon for him and it was reflected by the Show tossing him about the ring. Punk to his credit fought back and it has to be admitted that there were a couple to submission holds which had Show squirming. In the end however, Show delivered the final cut to Punk before following it up with a chokeslam and picking up the victory – it could be a while before Punk gets another title shot… Winner – The Big Show and Having picked up the victory, Scott Hall comes out from the back and raises The Big Show’s arm in the air to celebrate his victory. Whilst the exact terms of their relationship are unknown it certainly seems as though the new ECW manager will be watching Show’s back. Ratings – B for the match and A for the celebration afterwards. Overall we got a C+ and we still don’t have enough hot storylines to follow which isn’t really surprising considering the recent upheaval Show analysis

O’Haire and Tanaka delivered a much better match than expected – maybe they’ll get better treatment after all.
Justin Credible is essentially a punch bag until I can think of something better to do with him.
A three man “damn”!!!
CM Punk wasn’t ready but we needed someone and he was the best we had at that point in time.
The Kelly wardrobe malfunction is the most downloaded video on you tube this week!
