Modifying Prestige

Interesting article ranking all 119 programs over at College Football News. I am thinking over replacing the Prestige vaule in the pstats.dat file with the values from the CFN article. I like the more natural (less-paltooned) distribution of the values. Default Values for Prestige College Football News Values My Questions: Does anyone see any reason why these values wouldn't work? Can I enter in numbers with a decimal? Will it break the game? Anyone else interested in this? I can link my modified pstats.dat file.

Info from the College Football News article: This was written before the season started
The Scoring System - Attendance. How much fan support is there? Obviously some stadiums are far bigger than others so this might not seem fair, but it's a good indication of interest in the program counting the average attendance for home dates from 2003 to 2005 and divided by 10,000 to get the score. For example, Iowa averaged 68,927 fans per game over the last three seasons, so the program gets a score of 6.89. Why this is important: Some stadiums are bigger than others and some teams get more support, but that's the point. It's a big deal to the bottom line of an athletic department, and the relevance of the football program to recruits and the national media, to get 100,000+ butts in the seats at places like Ohio State, Tennessee and Penn State. How can Eastern Michigan and its average of 11,000 fans per game compete when compared to Michigan and its average of 112,000 fans? Exactly. - APR. From the most recent batch of Academic Performance Rates available from the NCAA, if a program finished in the top 10%, it got a score of 10. If a program finished in the 40%-49% range, it got a score of 5. For example, Boise State's most recently released APR for football players was 60-70%, so it gets a score of 7. Why this is important: After all, these are supposed to be student-athletes out there playing. This is a good indicator for how much emphasis a program places on academics rather than simply using the football players for their on-the-field talents. - Wins over the last three years. The number of wins over Division-I teams a program has from 2003-2005 (wins over D-IAA teams aren't counted.) Why this is important: At the end of the day, this is all that really matters to college football fans. Winning games makes everything else forgivable. - Quality wins over the last three years. How many wins from 2003 to 2005 does a program have over Division-I teams that finished with a winning record? Why this is important: This goes to show the consistency of programs when compared to the above-average. Programs that consistently win these games are always in the hunt for conference titles and big bowl games. - Players drafted over the last three years. The number of players selected in the NFL Draft from 2003 to 2005 divided by two for the score. Why this is important: This is a bigger deal than you might think. If a blue-chip recruit is trying to decide between two schools, he'll most likely go to the one with the better track record of sending its players to the next level. If a big-time program has a low score, that might mean less emphasis is put on player development and readiness for the NFL. - Conference winning percentage over the last three years. From 2003 to 2005, this is what percentage of conference games has a team won. Conference championship games don't count in the conference winning percentages (those count in the total wins and, more often than not, in the Quality Win component.) Keep in mind that some programs switched leagues; that's taken into account. For the teams without a conference affiliation for a given year, their overall winning percentages were used. Why this is important: All teams shoot for conference titles first and foremost. BCS bowl games and national titles are great, but those require a certain amount of good fortune. Take care of conference play and everything else will fall into place. - Elite Wins. This is how many wins a program has from 2003 to 2005 over teams that finished a season with two losses or fewer, or wins on the road or in a bowl game over teams that finished with three losses or fewer. An extra 0.5 is added for an Elite Win on the road, but that doesn't get added for wins over teams with three losses. If a team beats a team that finished with three losses twice, it gets credit for two Elite Wins. For example, in 2004 Auburn beat Tennessee, who finished with three losses, twice last year and gets Elite credit for both wins. Why this is important: These are, more often than not, the types of wins that make good programs great, and are the wins the fans remember. - Bad Losses. These are the number of losses a program has from 2003 to 2005 against teams that finished a season with three wins or fewer. This number is subtracted from the overall score. An extra 0.5 is taken off a bad loss at home. Why this is important: Lose to a bad team and the win the week before gets quickly forgotten about. These are the losses that suck the life out of a team and a season.
Example
50. Michigan State Score: 43.47 2005 Ranking: 54 2004 Ranking: 47 2003 Ranking: 49 Attendance Score - 7.39 APR Score - 3 Draft -7 Wins - 18 Quality Wins - 5 Elite Wins - 2 Bad Losses - 0 Conf. - 4.58 TOTAL - 43.47 Program Analysis: John L. Smith's program hasn't been sharp over the last two years going 1-7 past November 30th to blow shots at going to a bowl game. The Attendance Score is there, the Draft Score and Quality Wins aren't all that bad, and now the team has to start winning more. The APR is lousy, but the Elite Wins over Notre Dame last year and at Minnesota in 2003. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Explanation of Scores - Attendance: Home attendance average over the last three years divided by 10,000. I would be interested. I would like to see how this would work out (if the lower teams would be stuck, or the higher teams would have too much of an advantage). I think this would be plausable, and it would still be possible to bring up the prestige of lower teams. I started a team at 20 prestige and was able to bring them up into the 30s in less than 10 years.

I have started a career with Buffalo using these prestige ratings. So far through the first year we are surprisingly 6-3 with 3 games left, so it will be interesting to see how much the prestige changes after a successful year. Now 7-4, just lost a heartbreaker to Arkansas St. They returned a fumble 48 yds for a TD and got the 2 to go up by 7 with just under 5 min. left. We held onto the ball for the rest of the game. Had a 4th and 6 from their 8. Got 7 yards for the 1st, but ASU stopped us on the 1 yd line and we were not able to run another play.

Finished the season 7-6 and 4th in the MAC. We lost to UConn as they scored the go ahead TD with less than 1 min left and then lost to TCU in the Las Vegas Bowl to finish out the year with 3 straight losses. It was a surprising year though as we beat the spread in 11 of our 13 games, we were favored against ASU and were 16 pt dogs to TCU and lost by 21. We did surprisingly well against TCU though. We took an early lead, had more yards, and it would have been a close game except for a 50 yd TD pass and an 81 yd punt return. I'll let you know how the prestige changes.

Much like California experienced. Looking at the big gainers (and losers): Temple pulled in the #83 class Utah State pulled in the #119 class Akron pulled in the #38 class Clemson pulled in the #11 class Conversely, Texas A&M pulled in the #67 class Boost in Prestige didn't help Utah State at all. Looks like Wins still count for something. Akron going 12-1 helped them a lot.
That's good stuff! I am hoping to do some simming today and tomorrow. We'll compare how Buffalo did in my sims. Are you actually controlling them or are you letting the CPU control them?
I'm doing the day-to-day operations, but I'm simming the games.

I would be interested to see a graph similar to the one you posted earlier, but with the adjusted (rounded) prestige ratings to start the 1st season, and then another at 5 or 10 years to see how the distribution has changed. Do any teams have lower than 20 or 25 prestige?

Looks like about 25 prestige is the lowest any team will steadily stay at. I should try another with Buffalo where I make sure to lose every game and get the worst recruiting class every year and see what happens to the prestige.

I have noticed something else interesting. When you add up all of the original (default) prestige scores the total is 5855. When you add up all of the new modified prestige scores before a single sim the total is 4737. At the start of the 2007 season = 5025 At the start of the 2008 season = 5256.5 At the start of the 2009 season = 5444.8 It appears that the AI has a target number for overall prestige. Every year the sum of the prestige scores rises towards 5855. It will be interesting to see: (A) When (and if) it gets to 5855. (B) Does it keep rising or plateau. I am busy with work this week and next ... may not get a chance to do any more simming until next weekend.

I just lost the season. When I went to save it gave me a message saying there was an error and to check to see if I had another instance of BBCF running, and the game locked. The only way to get out was to shut down my computer. When I booted it back up and tried to load the save, it said there was no save available. When I checked the game file, there was no .sav file  I don't know what to do about it :(

There should be a .old file that is the backup of the league the last time you saved it.
