OMW: One Mission

Recommended Posts

Life, at times, seems to go nowhere. It was the peak of February in 2007, and winter seems to be taking its bow for another year everywhere in the country -- everywhere except that cute little corner of Western New York that tucks itself against Lake Ontario and Erie. Southwestern New York: The proverbial asscrack of the state. But that's all rhetoric. And so my life, like the metaphorical spirit of New York's not-so-historic Southern Tier, was in the pits. I had been out of school for a few years; and the normal going-ons of a teenage life had escaped me due to a near-death experience that put me in the hospital for six days. I had missed so much of the "great American experience" because it would, in actuality, kill me. Having given up most of my hope in humanity, I would brood in home week in and out, catching hockey games and wrestling shows in my spare time, tucked away in a little corner of the world that no one would ever venture to find -- that I could be conveniently assured of. In some sort of half-hearted attempt to appease my mom, who had desired so strongly for me to see out my full potential before my medical incident, I attended a handful of courses at the local community college with no particular goal or career in mind. But this, as the storytellers would say, is where things get interesting. Most of these classes, you see, bored me to death. Anyone who attends a college in New York state knows that in some ways the New York State University general education standards can be considered both horribly useless and terribly boring. Most of these classes, you see, I was failing dismally due to lack of attendance, lack of assignments -- basically a lack of interest. A single exception to that would have been a rhetoric class I had with a very interesting professor. The class itself was nothing particularly special -- rhetoric afterall, had brought itself to the wayside over a hundred years ago and there was frankly no reason the state still required a course on it. There was frankly nothing that qualified this guy to teach a course on it. In there, we did little -- we discussed current events, personal philosophies -- whatever, the general bull-****. On an otherwise average day in the class, I was the last to leave -- it took me a while to pack up my things, particularly because the printed off copy of "The Death of WCW" from the TEW 2007 boards that I printed off fell forward into the row ahead of me. As I went to retrieve it and pack away my things, my professor approached me and caught a glance of my reading material for the day. Other then the berating, curse-filled scolding I was expected, he smiled at me. "I think I'll have something you like." he said, and ushered me up to the desk in front. My professor's name, for the record, was Barrett Alfonso. Opening a pocket in his briefcase he pulled out a notebook, that was, amazingly, filled with pages of wrestling memoribilia and what appeared to be made up, hand-written wrestling shows by him. We shared some words on the state of wrestling -- how WWE had become boring, how TNA had served virtually no purpose, how most of the indies had become bland and disappointing. We talked about wrestling history and what had drawn us to things, and how my professor, Alfonso, had written a few wrestling books and even successfully controlled a play-by-mail wrestling federation in the 1980's. I was intrigued if not impressed, and leaving, Alfonso sparked a light-bulb in my head that to this day has not burnt out. "I wish, though.." he started. "I wish there was at least a local promotion to get in to -- something that could get these ideas guys like you and I have and actually put them into action." Cue the little bulb above my head. "You said you were able to put together a nice little nest egg from the books and the game and the teaching?" I asked him. He nodded. "Then why don't you start it?" The question itself seemed proposterous to him at first. Him? Start a wrestling promotion? But as Alfonso got to thinking about it, it all seemed to make a little more sense. His entire life, the early year comic book obsession, his interest in action figures and science-fiction movies that turned into a career in Pop Culture -- his entire life had been about the theory... the story if you would, of good and evil. He had been living in an oversized, adult's vesion Chucky Cheese for decades. This was the chance he had never thought of, to put the product he'd always wanted into a true, actual existence. But the doubt was still there: Promotions were notoriously expensive... did he even have the money? Did he even have the backing? "Would you be interested in helping me run this thing?" Alfonso asked me. And that to me, even, was a shock -- but an opportunity in my otherwise drab life that I wasn't going to let pass. "Of course!" Alfonso thought again for a moment. Smiled and then, ironically, frowned. "The best I could do to get us started was about 50,000$." If I was any more astonished my jaw might have literally dropped. "I think we can make that bird fly," I laughed. My life was about putting into action the ideas of a type of wrestling -- of true heros and villains, the likes of which had merely disappeared from the wrestling scene. Ring of Honor had tried, but seemingly failed and fallen into the same old traps -- it's ranking systems constantly changed. It constantly cycled in and out new talent. From that point on my life had become consumed with one idea. One passion. One mission. In the matter of a single conversation, my life had become One Mission Wrestling.
