  14. TFX Wrestling presents “LIVE #001” Saturday, January 4th, 2020
 Held at Marv’s Sports Central in Canberra, New South Wales
 Announce Team: Garfield Harth & The Alex Arturro Experience
 Attendance: 15 Paid Patrons

 Our in-house commentary duo of Garfield Harth & The Alex Arturro Experience kicked the show off by stepping into the ring, welcoming our paid patrons to the first ever TFX Wrestling LIVE event, and began hyping some of the bigger name performers and contests that would appear later on in the evening. Following some brief back and forth hype between the two, our lead announcer Garfield Harth stated that it was his absolute honour and privilege to introduce the fans to the man calling the shots around here, the sheriff in this town, the one, the only, “Classy” Paul Massey!! Paul Massey - acting as the figurehead of the TFX Wrestling promotion - reiterated that the organisation promised to the the launching pad for the best young talent here in Australia, across the Pacific Ocean in New Zealand, and anywhere else in the world! Massey claimed that whilst we may start tonight with humble beginnings, it takes only a single spark to ignite infernos, and that spark has indeed been lit tonight! From my backstage vantage point, I felt the trio did a very good job in each establishing their individual roles and personalities to the audience in an easily digestible manner, and allowed us an easy transition into the first bout of the night. Pleased with how that all went! (29)
 In a deliberate move to feature both our native and New Zealand talent available, the first ever in-ring TFX Wrestling contest saw the the well established Alien Armada trio of Karrg The Conquerer, Laguna The Loyal & Deathwatch Beetle battle and defeat the assembled crew of “Fuzzy” Al Freeman, Quick Silver & Izzy Decartes in 6 man tag team action, following a Conquest Bomb courtesy of Kaarg The Conquerer to Izzy Decartes. Despite being the more experienced unit, it appeared as though our friends from across the Pacific Ocean were certainly a step or two slower than the boys bred here in Australia; “Fuzzy” Al Freeman really levelling up his in-ring performance and emerging as the stand out athlete within the contest. Ensuring our working partnership with ZEN Wrestling remains fruitful during these early days is certainly a priority of mine, so despite their less than stellar performance, Alien Armada will still be welcomed back with open arms should their schedule see fit, in the short to medium term future. (19)

Backing up our claim as the home of un-discovered talent, the appointed duo of “Demented” Dee Lucketti & Olly Graves stood side by side for the first time ever underneath the “Misery Business” moniker against the 19 year old blood brother combination of Freddy & Bobby Buchanan in further traditional tag team action. From a future positioning perspective, I have really high hopes that both these sets of tag teams can flourish within the TFX Wrestling duo division, as I believe the four individuals involved each bring something special to the organisation. Tonight however, was NOT that night! Within two to three minutes, the bout had broken down into four teenagers dishing out some sub-par pro wrestling to near, non-existent crowd participation. Thanking my lucky stars that I decided to only give the quartet only eight minutes or so, Graves mercifully brought things to a close with the Miserable Ending. (10)

 Continuing the trend in keeping the high energy, junior heavyweight style action continuing, “Flyin” Francis Burke emerged victorious in a 4 Way Dance over his young and lesser experienced counterparts in Lucas Pobb, Reggie Hammer & Steven XS. Burke’s “surfer dude” style personality really seemed to draw a great response from the 15 strong audience in the crowd, and I congratulated him post-match on doing a commendable job leading the way for all involved. Despite having some solid plans moving forward for every member involved in this contest, the 19 year old Reggie Hammer really stunk the ring up, was very dull to watch, and has caused me to second guess whether the young lion will have the in-ring chops capable of delivering on my long term plans. Trusting the finish with the two most experienced hands in the ring, “Flyin” Francis Burke would pin Lucas Pobb in 10:12 courtesy of the Flyin’ Flip Neckbreaker for the popular victory in an ultimately average contest. (19)

 Prior to the next contest, controversial Queensland “shock jock” radio personality Horrie Fowler swaggered out to the ring, drawing a lukewarm response from the audience (truthfully, some probably didn’t know who he was), and delivered a promising heel promo that was considerably better than even I had anticipated. Horrie Fowler stated that whilst he applauds a promotion like TFX Wrestling in giving the youth of the nation a platform to apply their craft, what has occurred earlier on tonight in this ring, wasn’t professional wrestling! Fowler claimed that the golden age of grapplers are rolling in their graves at the sight of the fine sport of professional wrestling having been watered down to a mere gymnastics and tumbling display. Horrie Fowler introduced his client moving forward, the “throwback to the age of real tough men”…TreHawke Phillips! Horrie Fowler promised that regardless of who walks into TFX Wrestling, you WILL respect old school!! Given this was Fowler’s first appearance rolling out this character and pairing, I thought both he and Philips did a very good job, and I was quite happy with my pairing of the two. Fowler’s loud mouth personality will prove to be a great heater for TreHawke at ringside, whilst Philips’ deliberate reliance on old school wrestling mentality and methods, should prove to be quite the contrast in comparison to the high octane energy elsewhere on the card. (32)
Trusting the two experienced hands to close the first half of the show out in a strong manner, the two veterans delivered a well paced and deliberate bout, with particular focus on presenting a match vastly slower than the pace which had been set previously by the younger members of the roster. In the most solid performance of the night so far, which quite frankly, was to be expected from this pair - Philips managed to apply his patented Sleeper Hold - yet again another intentional decision of utilising an unglamorous and old school submission finisher - to force Armando Guerrero to tap out in 11:01. (23)

 As a creative way to lead out of intermission and back into the second half of the show, the 19 year old young lion Leon Maine made his way out to the ring and demanded everyone’s attention in the building. Playing the role of a condescending, rich snob character to perfection, Maine stated it was an absolute travesty that he had been left off of tonights program show - but claimed that very soon, you won’t be able to keep Leon Maine off of ANY professional wrestling card in the country! In fact, Leon Maine promises to be the “MAINE” Man in TFX Wrestling! Considering he is still so young, I thought Leon Maine did a very good job holding the crowd’s attention for the five minute promo and excelled at this character’s mannerisms. From the footage I have seen of Maine’s in-ring work, I don’t believe he will ever close one of our shows in a five star classic, but his whiny and pompous persona should ensure fans return week after week to see him have his ass handed to him! (20)
 We shifted gear following the intermission to showcase some of our more experienced talent on the books; kicking things off with “Bat Out Of Hell” Adrian McGhee tackling masked wrestling sensation Black Flash. A final nod towards our working relationship with ZEN Wrestling, and perhaps an opportunity to show what he can potentially become within our promotion, we gave the New Zealand native the victory defeating McGhee at 10:42 with a Senton Bomb. From an in-ring perspective, Black Flash was head and shoulders above McGhee’s work rate and began to display really early signs of being one of our bigger stars if we can rely on performances like tonight. Whilst his in-ring work wasn’t anything to write home about, my opinion of McGhee wasn’t dampened by his outing tonight and he should still manage to find himself a role within the promotion moving forward. (29)

 When I initially pitched this to Gregory Grace…I don’t think he was overly impressed! However the smile on his face post match was more than enough to re-assure me that I had made the right creative call. Quite frankly, “God’s Gift To Women” Gregory Grace was one of our bigger name talents appearing on the show, and, had a long history as part of the RAW tag team division with Vincent Victory as The A-Listers. My problem…was I didn’t think much of Vincent Victory, but I loved the idea of Grace teaming up with Robbie Dazzler and pivoting the two individuals off in another direction as a fresh new unit. Although initially hesitant to the idea, the two mid-30 year olds got on like a house on fire, and were quickly walking young Cody Cook & Toby Tough through very creative spots for the contest early on in the afternoon before our doors opened. As the “Dazzling Grace” tag team outfit, I believe these two have a phenomenal future ahead of them as long as the TFX Wrestling promotion exists. On the other side of things, Cody Cook really looked heads and shoulders superior to his partner Toby Tough - the pairing, an initially brilliant idea in theory, but potentially, a short term pairing if they are at such polar opposites as in-ring producers. Continuing the trend of solid contests in the second half of the show, these four men worked very well together and produced an excellent sub-main event contest for their respective individual experience levels; Robbie Dazzler managing to roll Toby Tough up for a flash pin fall victory at 11:20. Good, good stuff! (27) It was time for the main event of our debut show - you only get one chance to make a lasting impression and I certainly stressed that to the duo prior to stepping out from behind the curtain! Paul Massey and I had gone back and forth many a time over whom should be included and how the closing contest should go down, but some brief research and conversations with a number of insiders around the oceanic scene quickly solidified our final card. Despite only having 4 years experience, there are rumours circling within the Australian wrestling scene that some of the significantly larger companies are keeping tabs on “The Walking Weapon” Rob Edwards’ progress, and it seemed an absolute no-brainer to bring the 27 year old legitimate martial arts specialist in for as long as possible…and if finances allow, sign exclusively to the promotion down the line. Seemingly relishing in the opportunity to deliver a high flying, stiff, striking contest, Monday Next & Rob Edwards held nothing back from one another - the duo both finally leaving the ring with visible welts and bruises courtesy of the strong style headliner. Given Monday’s high profile within the Oceanic wrestling scene and my eventual desire to sign him one day exclusively to the promotion, we awarded the 34 year old the victory, pinning Rob Edwards via a Flash Forward in 12:32. From my perspective as the owner of the organisation, Monday Next & Rob Edwards really epitomised the vision of TFX Wrestling I had moving forward and the only concern that plagued me as I drove home later that night, was whether or not some larger fish in the pond would begin circling Monday and Rob soon with much deeper pockets. (39)

In a post match promo, a heavily breathing Monday Next took the house microphone and thanked the audience in attendance for coming out tonight for the companies first show. “…TFX Wrestling is doing something very special here - and that is actually giving the youth in this country an actual opportunity to show what they’ve got! I’ve been in this business 13 years, and in that time, I’ve learnt to very quickly identify when the promoter or office is spinning you one story to your face, and another behind your back! But let me tell you something…I believe in what I see here…I believe in all the young men back there that are looking for an opportunity…I believe that this promotion is sincere in giving the youth of today a springboard to launch themselves from…and I BELIEVE in TFX Wrestling! Thank you very much - good night everybody!”
The fact that Monday Next decided to grab the house microphone following the contest and cut an ad hoc promo irked me…but the fact that this closing improvised speech drew such a loud reaction from a small group of people - and promoted the organisation in the best possible manner - appeased me enough to and prevent some stern words taking place. Monday Next hey…this feels like it’s going to be a roller coaster of a relationship! (43)

  20. “Well, she’s not exactly The Ritz….but she’ll do for a first show!”
Typical Paul Massey. For a veteran of over 30 years in both the Australian and New Zealand wrestling scenes, his sarcastic tones weren’t necessarily meant to lessen everything that I had pulled together over the last seven days, but certainly, and somewhat humorously, vocalised what we were all thinking. A far cry from the lofty heights I had in my daydream just a week ago, TFX Wrestling would hold its very first event from Marv’s Sports Central in Canberra, New South Wales; essentially a sports bar with a large open plan dining area that had previously held professional wrestling and low level MMA fights, this $300 venue was certainly a stark smack of reality. Despite a decent social media campaign directed and rolled out by yours truly, I didn’t exactly have a wave of pre-sold tickets flying out the door either. Paul knew it too. I didn’t have to actually tell him, but by the venue and the set up that was being slowly erected around the 54 year old by a number of volunteers and younger wrestlers, it was instinctual. Prior to any of this, Paul Massey was literally the very first person I called when the concept of TFX Wrestling first emerged. If I could call myself the father of TFX Wrestling, Massey was certainly Granddaddy! Following a fantastic career that concluded in 2006, Massey was brought into New Zealand based promotion, ZEN: Art Of Wrestling, an organisation mixing colourful and charismatic characters with the technical aspects of lucha libre. Despite coming close to bankruptcy on several occasions, Massey’s stalwart personality, wise counsel and calm manner helped steer the good ship ZEN out of dire financial circumstances on many an occasion. Following some tentative back and forth between ZEN Owner and regular in-ring worker Halloween Knight and I over a matter of weeks, Massey agreed to help provide his three decades of experience to my start up wrestling promotion, on the proviso, that ZEN remain his top priority when required. One handshake agreement later and I had myself the first piece vital to anchoring the promotion. Massey’s extensive knowledge of both Australian and New Zealand wrestling markets was going to prove pivotal in portraying to the rest of Oceanic region, that TFX was something to take notice of. Additionally, having had his paws in both landscapes for so long, also gave me access to inquire, negotiate and potentially access performers from across the Pacific Ocean over the coming months, that larger promotions such as Australian Pro, Revolution Australian & Deep Impact Wrestling may not have yet discovered.

“Ease up Paul, he’s got enough on his plate without hearing that nonsense!” Ah, there it was! The eternal optimism of ol’ “Slow Hand”. A well known referee who had regularly appeared within the Australian wrestling scene for well over a decade, Wels Farmer was indeed the second contact I tracked down following conversations with Paul Massey. A generally quiet and reserved man, his 17 years experience wearing the black and white striped shirt also brought an element of credibility to the promotion. Admittedly it took quite a few conversations with Wels to convince the retired 41 year old to leave his organic farm set up every Saturday night and step in between the ropes again, but he too, was crucial to TFX Wrestling finding its feet. Out of the kindness of his heart, and perhaps a little morbid curiosity at whether I could actually pull even a single show off, Wels finally agreed to dust off his referee shirt and break out the slacks. And with those two verbal and handshake agreements, I had everything I believed was necessary to bring this promotion to at least one event.

 At the core of things, my business plan from a “wrestling perspective” was simple. Fill out the essential and business related roles with experienced hands such as “Classy” Paul Massey & Wels Farmer, leave the creative vision to yours truly and utilise as much of the young and emerging talent available to me, both here in Australia and in New Zealand. Given all that Paul Massey - and by association Halloween Knight had done for me to this point - I would never consider burning bridges and sabotaging talent from ZEN: Art Of Wrestling….but, if a talented prospect preferred things here…things might get a little….“complicated”. There was an absolute plethora of emerging rookies and performers in both countries available to me, just itching for someone, somewhere to give them a shot. Perhaps, in many respects, my business plan was a direct reflection of that same desperation I had in creating TFX Wrestling; all I wanted too, was to be given the opportunity to show what I could bring to the table.
 “It’s only the beginning” I replied, “Nothing worthwhile was ever done quickly, hey?”

 There we sat, next to one another surveying the scene as the first ever TFX Wrestling event slowly took form. Three men of very different ages, backgrounds, experiences and mindsets. One of them, dreaming that this was but a mere step in a much bigger journey, whilst the two either side of me, here on the promise of a start up wrestling promotion, in which they could positively give back to the business they’d spent so many decades in previously. We watched the surreal sight as a hodge-podge assembly of characters milled around slowly creating a professional wrestling venue out of a Sports Bar. Amongst being paid and given the opportunity to perform if they would agree to set up and pack down the ring, four young men all laughed and rough housed with one another as they went about tightening the ring ropes, taking flat back bumps on the canvas and running through set ups and situations ahead of tonights show. Elsewhere, on the other side of the energy spectrum, a few well travelled and prime time performers preferred to keep to themselves. They’d seen and done this kind of thing before. They anticipated a show again next week, but there was no guarantee there would be another next month! So was the fickle nature of start up professional wrestling organisations! Some had never worked together before and others were quite good friends already, but even now, this odd ball assembly of professional wrestlers had somewhat of an air of “collectiveness.” WE had the opportunity to deliver something special. This event and promotion would survive, thrive or die based on what WE, thirty or so individuals of various backgrounds, experiences, sizes and shapes, would create tonight. In a matter of hours, it was to be “put up or shut up” time!

 Wels Farmer, tapped my leg and pointed to the back door of the Sports Central building where a figure began navigating their way into the venue. “There’s your man, Scott…” The big ticket had arrived.
Thankfully.

  21. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img924/1125/Dju09a.jpg In my mind, I could see a brilliantly lit arena, confetti falling from the heavens and a battle worn individual basking in their well-deserved glory amidst the deafening applause of thousands of die-hard professional wrestling fans. Whilst hundreds of camera’s and phones lit up the building like a frenzied sky full of lightning, the weary victor would raise a truly beautiful championship belt above their head in one of the promotion’s crowning moments; a prize so sought after and respected, that it’s prestige was recognised throughout the wrestling world. Following what seemed like an eternal celebration for our hero and our fan base, I would sidle up to the ringside area in the most inconspicuous manner possible, trying to avoid the cluster of wrestling publication photographers jostling amongst one another for the perfect snap of our new champion. Noticing my presence at ringside, our recently anointed franchise player would shoot me a sly smile and a nod, and upon departing the battlefield known as the squared circle, would throw a sweaty arm around my shoulder as we headed back towards the locker-room. “We did it boss….we did it!”
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The piercing tone of yet another text message literally dissolves my vivid day dream in front of me. My reality in fact, is a far cry from the eloquent and elaborate vision I was just immersed in. There were no dazzling lights, no thunderous roars from an audience heralding a new champion and certainly no sign whatsoever of any sweeping moments of elation and accomplishment for yours truly. The cold and hard facts were that here I was, sitting alone in my dimly lit office, staring blankly at pages upon pages of scribbled notes, numbers and ramblings; some of them crumpled up, others stained with coffee ring markings, and none of them, not one of them, any use to me so far. I didn’t move a muscle toward looking at what news the text message may have delivered me. My recent history suggested that whatever it was, would no doubt end up being some sort of hurdle, problem or obstacle to overcome. That’s all I ever seemed to hear these days. “But” I figured “I guess that’s what comes with the territory”. I surveyed the scene one final time, took a big breath, and decided I needed to start over. There was too much clutter. Too many manic “note-to-self” and “must do” reminders floating around me. Would it always be this way? Was this my life now? A shambolic mid 30’s male, permanently stressed and living seemingly on caffeine and other assorted energy drinks who somehow made daily sense of towering stacks of professional wrestling hieroglyphics?
 Rummaging through the mess of paperwork that lay scattered and piled in the foreground, I found a note pad with a few rare pristine sheets still available, and following a quick clearing of the space in front of me, jotted down a quick motivational quote for myself. “It Always Seems Impossible, Until It’s Done” - that seemed more prevalent than ever for me right now! “TFX Wrestling: presents LIVE #001” It was time to prove that throughout all those late night drunken conversations regarding the Australian Wrestling scene, I DID know what I was talking about…that as a professional wrestling fan of over 25 years, I COULD bring something to the business I loved so much! I had heard the same comment so many times before this; “Well, if you think you can do it better…then why don’t you start your own wrestling promotion?”
 Well here I was. One week prior to the very first TFX Wrestling event and I was up to my neck in it. Venue set up issues, in-ring talent proving to be un-reliable and hesitant to commit, and an incredible amount of overly expensive lighting and sound equipment now needing to be purchased prior to next Saturday night. Somehow, the budget I had sworn to so stringily stick to in the initial planning stages had flown right out of the window. TFX Wrestling was going to run its first show at a loss. At the rate of these expenses, I needed TFX Wrestling to turn some sort of a profit in the first year, or it was going to be done, dusted and defunct. And with it, my pride. My ego, my promotion and my profit all on the line - and if TFX Wrestling failed - they too would be done, dusted and defunct.
 Another text message comes through. “Hey Scott….listen, we got a problem….”.
 Of course we do….of course we have a problem!
