1. I've been hearing a lot of this lately but I don't understand what's not to like about the smaller weight classes? There's more skill and technique being displayed, better stamina, generally MUCH more action, etc. Every WEC card is a great card and it's no coincidence that the fighters are 155 and under. Light weight classes > heavy weight classes for sure and this is coming from a 6'0" 176 pound guy.
  2.

So there was a rumour about a month back that a 'reasonably major' UFC name's representatives were putting out feelers for a jump to the WWE. I heard three names from people 'in the know', one of which later turned out to be hot air.

The other two names out there were Matt Mitrione and Roy Nelson. The reasoning behind the 'Meathead' rumour didn't do it for me, plus he's not what I would call even a 'reasonably major name' - but maybe I'm underestimating what the Kimbo win did for his popularity in the US? Anyway, lots of sites seem to have picked up on the Nelson thing this past week or so.

For anyone who hasn't read it yet, Nelson signed a contract about two years ago with Roy Jones Jr's 'Square Ring Promotions' to compete on their boxing/MMA PPV in March of 09. Turns out that they still have some kind of options on Nelson's career, and are suing Nelson and the UFC. No word on how much merit their case has, but it's serious enough to get him pulled from UFC 125 and to have his UFC career publicly put 'on ice' by Dana White.

So assuming the guy in question was Nelson, what say people to 'Big Country' in the WWE?

I read something about this a while back saying "one of the last guys you'd expect" and Roy is just that for me (given his physique and all).

  3. I hope the two of you are right about it happening within the next 12 months. I've been eager to see this division since the WEC first announced that they were going to add it 2-3 years ago. Johnson and Benavidez are already beasts at bantamweight so it'll be very interesting to see them in their natural weight class.

Also, does anyone know if Mackens Semerzier is heading to the UFC or if he got released? He lost three in a row, which is usually a big no-no, but it'd suck to see him cut after his excellent fight last week. I'm asking because I can't find anything about it and they don't usually announce WEC cuts like they do with the UFC.

  4. So, how long do the people here think it'll be before we see the flyweight (125 lb/57 kg/9 stone) division added to the UFC? Do you think they'll end up waiting a couple of years to let the bantamweights and featherweights settle in (and let flyweight get a little deeper) or do you think they'll add it in the near future?
  5. Okay, well, your posts stick out to me as well.. You come off as one of those douche bags that is sitting in a luxury leather chair, staring down over the top of your nose, and smoking from a pipe. You're an elitist, clearly... Or trying really hard to be.

So I guess we're even... Both drawing conclusions and looking foolish. :)

It's not so much that I care about Toney's mobility. I've watched a lot of his fights. It's the fact that he has good accuracy. Randy's been clipped by Lesnar(yes, I realize the dude has hands the size of most faces) and Nogueira, and neither of those two have a third of the accuracy that Toney will have.

Again, we'll see tomorrow night. I got Toney pulling the upset.

Okay then, we'll agree to disagree. But, you wrote Sonnen off before his last fight and even said GSP would lose if I remember correctly. Is it a dislike of wrestlers that you have, do you want to be considered the guy who called an upset before it happened, or do you just buy into the hype?

  6. Okay, so.... Because I give a boxer a chance of beating a near 50 year old MMA fighter who's been clipped a lot in his recent fights.... That makes me a daily user of Sherdog? Interesting...

Excuse the hell out of me for believing a guy who's been throwing punches for the greater part of his life has a chance of landing one on Randy as he bumbles in and then following with a couple more on the mat to finish it. Not very many fighters in the UFC have the kind of accuracy that Toney has.

I can't wait for Toney to win, Dustin, so I can serve you a monsterous piece of humble pie. Then maybe in the future you'll keep your snarky comments to yourself about sherdog or whatever lame MMA forum you want to use for a basis to flame someone.

It's far from just this (even though it does seem to be the general consensus among shertards that Toney will score a KO within seconds). Almost all of your posts stand out to me, mainly because most people on this forum make sense when they post and yours are so sherdog esque.

  7. Two days until James Toney puts Couture on his ass with a hook to the head and upsets the entire MMA world.

The closer and closer it gets to fight time, and the more videos that come out with Toney's training, and how much better shape he's got in. I think Couture is looking past him as well.

You log onto sherdog every day don't you? Be honest, I'm not here to judge.

  8. USA! USA! USA! :( Why not cheer Let's go rednecks *clap clap clapclapclap*? Chant for the fighter, not for the country, especially as this is no team sport. I was so happy Silva finally locked it to win it, as he was really put to a test and still came through to prove his superiority.

Come on now. EVERY country does their equivalent of this.

Canada: GSP! GSP! GSP! (even when he's not fighting)

England has a song that they sing

    Australia: Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!

  9. I don't expect it either, but it would be crazy to rule out a Sonnen victory. I have done that with many other one-dimensional wrestlers only to be proven wrong more times than not.

Henderson had the right idea against Silva in the first round only to throw it out the window in the second. He didn't go for a takedown until AFTER being rocked/dropped by a knee from what I remember. Who knows what would have happened had he continued to play it smart. Sonnen definitely won't make the same mistake.

  10.

The reason it is that low is because when it is aired live it is usually 3am!

It makes sense.

Just because they have programming available in 130 countries, doesn't mean that 130 countries get live (or recent) PPV's. A lot of places just get UFC Wired/Unleashed etc and old highlight shows. I wouldn't even know where to begin.

They supposedly do somewhere between 30-50k for the live airings on ESPN in the UK, but the figures aren't readily available. Hell, even the US PPV numbers are unofficial 'guestimates'. There were some semi-legit people claiming that UFC 100 actually did way less than the reported figure, some say as low as 800,000. Only the UFC know for sure.

Your guess is really as good as mine...

That's extremely low. No wonder they get the cards they do.

  12. While I agree he may overexagerrating with the 5 going on in the same night, what he means is truely going international. He doesn't mean he will have BJ defending in the U.S., Silva defending in the UK, GSP in Canada, he means having entirely different "brands" going on at once.

They are getting closer to expanding TUF around the world which he has said is a major goal, so what they could do is have the Japan/China/India/UK/Germany TUF finale all going on at once. I imagine that yes they would be smaller shows because you are not going to have your top stars appearing on the card in Vegas and then smaller shows around the world (b/c who would watch those just for local guys?)

by doing things like that you could establish foreign stars faster instead of putting them on undercard after undercard and of course they would sell lots in their home market where the US wouldn't really care about them (see Bisping and Hardy). Once they are established in their home region you could then put them on major UFC events as you would then have for example the China TUF winner vs. the German TUF winner, something that could actually draw global interest. It also isn't like you would "miss out" on anything as the UFC could also put matches on TV the next week or online. The doing it all on one night might seem crazy, but it may easier than running events 5 days in a row at the end of every month.

They also now have offices in Canada, China, and their working relationship with the Middle Eastern country which essentially counts as an office since they organize those events, and they said an India office is likely next.

Also Dustin, Wand vs. Leben has been publicly scratched due to Wands injuries and time he will need to recover.

    It makes sense.

  13. "We could have a show [in the U.S.] on Saturday night and five more going on in five other countries."

How would this ever work? As far as I know, all the events they do now are shown in the US, UK, Canada and all of their other current markets. Would these be small shows to build up fighters in that area and eventually move the good ones over to the global events kind of like the WWE does with the events that are never shown on TV?
