  13. PRIDE FC ANNOUNCES THE PURCHASE OF RIVAL DREAM

    <img src=https://i.imgur.com/2bW4czI.png>

TOKYO - PRIDE Worldwide Holdings LLC, the parent company of the PRIDE, has purchased rival mixed martial arts promoter DREAM, though they will continue to operate as separate entities.

Financial terms of the sale were valued at just over $6 million.

DREAM CEO Keiichi Sasahara confirmed the deal to Japanese media on saturday night.

"Right now the plan is to operate on our own," Sasahara said. "Business as usual."

Negotiations between representatives for PRIDE and DREAM, have been in the making for months, various family parties with the deal said.

Six years ago DREAM started its work, after several employees of the former company that controlled PRIDE, DSE, was closed to build the new brand and that joined FEG, the company that controlled the K-1, and with that, DREAM was created to is a rival to PRIDE in Japan.

Sadaharu Tanikawa, president of DREAM, did not respond to requests for comments regarding the deal with the PRIDE.

On May 1, Tanikawa described rumors of a pending sale to the PRIDE as "crazy." He said DREAM was searching for "strategic partners" and that there were at least two options, but that "the PRIDE is not one of them."

Sources confirmed Sasahara, the current DREAM CEO, attempted to wrest control of the brand, but in the end was unsuccessful. Instead, an agreement to sell DREAM's licensing rights, fighter contracts and closed video library with the PRIDE on Thursday or Friday.

PRIDE President Nobuyuki Sakakibara told Blurcat.com that Sasahara would remain in charge of DREAM and retain his staff. The company would run separately from PRIDE and exhaust its contracts with television.

J-Sports executives, through a representative, declined to comment. The network has a deal with DREAM for another 6 shows, sources said.

Current contracts between fighters and DREAM are transferable to PRIDE, said sources with knowledge of the deal between promotions.

DREAM has an event scheduled for the beginning of July in Tokyo.

Some fighters and trainers were heard by Blurcat.com reporting about this deal and what it could impact on MMA today.

Cesar Gracie, jiu-jitsu coach of former PRIDE lightweight champion Nick Diaz, expressed his opinion on the impact a dominant MMA brand would have on high- and mid-level fighters.

"We are definitely pleased that it can elevate the sport in all aspects and that it impacts the fighters in their future contracts and in their pay," said Gracie.

UFC Hall of Fame fighter, currently competing under the PRIDE banner, Randy Couture said the agreement between PRIDE and DREAM "has the potential to be better for fighters who are free agents."

"The Purchase of DREAM Strengthens and Stabilizes PRIDE's Brand as the Largest Organization in the World," said Couture, 48, who will fight Steve Bosse. "PRIDE has big expansion projects for the next year and that would help a lot of fighters."

But Couture also noted, "Overall, it's too early to say whether it's positive or negative for the sport until we see what direction the new owners will take with the brand."

Currently, PRIDE is increasing the size of its squad and has created a new division (Flyweight) recently and some new changes are expected in the near future according to some sources connected to the organization.
