    ROH Night of Appreciation

    Saturday, Week 4, July 2001

Staten Island High School, New York, USA

    300 Fans - SOLD OUT!

    Rating - 72 B-

    myMey9C.jpg1f0xhUN.jpg59Wj8Fx.pngIS2S5ND.jpgx7DvLzm.jpg59Wj8Fx.pngx7UcvzF.jpgC1mkQDE.jpg

In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Da Hit Squad (Dan Maff and Monsta Mack) defeated Devine Storm (Quiet Storm and Chris Divine) and The S.A.T. (Joel and Jose Maximo) in 8:17; the order of elimination was Devine Storm first, and then The S.A.T. 49 D+

This match was a heavy showcase for Dan Maff and Monsta Mack of Da Hit Squad, primarily throwing their opponents around. However whenever The S.A.T. and Devine Storm got them out the ring it was quite the flip battle.

Those encounters didn't last for long and it was Da Hit Squad who reigned supreme over their much smaller opponents.

In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Reckless Youth defeated Colt Cabana in 13:28 by submission with a Stretch Plum. 60 C

Reckless Youth scores yet another win here in ROH, his performances quickly turning into some of the best on the roster despite not having such a following behind him compared to his other opponents.

With a good performance, Reckless Youth also was responsible for carrying Colt Cabana through in the match, something that I noted and let Gabe know. Colt has ways to go and Reckless Youth is quite already there.

In a bout that had good wrestling but didn't have much heat, Bryan Danielson defeated Spanky in 15:16 by pinfall with a Cattle Mutliation. 54 C

In the battle of Shawn Michaels trainee vs Shawn Michaels trainee, it was the slightly more experienced Bryan Danielson who took the win. Spanky has been a man on a mission since coming to ROH following his release from the HWA, but that rage and hope to prove himself does nothing against Bryan Danielson who slows the match down and forces Spanky to work his own match, taking the victory via submission.

    3PaPaRS.jpg59Wj8Fx.pngVeUbLCW.jpg

In a bout that had great wrestling and good heat, Low Ki defeated CM Punk in 13:51 by submission. 68 C+

If you were impressed by the technicality in the last match, look no further to this one. It was a vicious affair, with Low Ki and CM Punk bringing each other down to the ground and laying down on each other with some stiff ground and pound.

Both Punk and Low Ki haven't been off to so much you could say the great start in ROH, but Punk does come in with a victory from last month. Low Ki has two losses from last month on his record. Low Ki takes the win tonight by submitting Punk in an awkward looking armbar along with some stomps to the head. Low Ki has really grown into his own quite fast, benefiting from working with Rob Van Dam and Rhyno, which I definitely will have him facing off with the former very soon again.

    VBItNGJ.jpg59Wj8Fx.pngGxc0iMH.jpg59Wj8Fx.png3uoczvv.jpg59Wj8Fx.pngIQOsdpI.jpg

In a decent match, Homicide defeated Amazing Red, Michael Shane and Scoot Andrews in 12:19 when Homicide defeated Amazing Red by pinfall with a Cop Killa. 49 D+

A quick four way to slow the crowd down before the main event, Homicide takes the win with the focus being on him and Amazing Red who had some decent encounters and teased to a potential one on one match in the near future.

    DQPWZdv.jpgBkq4Fa0.jpgSQUjukP.jpg59Wj8Fx.pngS5yeXaq.jpgc9xTqNd.jpgVW36y5x.jpg

In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, Rob Van Dam, Sandman and Tommy Dreamer defeated Rhyno and Diamond Dynasty in 16:36 when Rob Van Dam defeated Simon Diamond by pinfall with a Frog Splash. 75 B-

A packed (and good) six-man tag team match to end off the show. Diamond Dynasty came down to the ring with some extra leverage, Simply Luscious. After a normal six-man tag match happened the match eventually devolved into chaos and the referee just let them duke it out ignoring the rules of the match.

They fought all around the high school, an apparent incentive for the anniversary of the school you get to see action right in front of your face. When they got back to the ring, Rhyno was held down with two chair shots by Sandman and Tommy Dreamer, then they came in the ring where Simon Diamond fell straight to a singapore cane shot to the head from Sandman and turned to a DDT from Dreamer followed lastly by a Five Star Frog Splash from Rob Van Dam to end the match.

    DQPWZdv.jpgBkq4Fa0.jpgSQUjukP.jpg

    S5yeXaq.jpgc9xTqNd.jpgVW36y5x.jpg

    aZwYIFI.jpg

While Rob Van Dam, Sandman, and Tommy Dreamer are in the ring celebrating their victory; outside the ring an enraged Rhyno is screaming at C.W. Anderson and Simon Diamond for ruining the match for him and ignores Simply Luscious's pleads for him to stop.

Eventually it goes so far that Rhyno shoves Simon Diamond down since he was the one who got pinned and was about to choke Luscious before he was cracked in the back with a brutal chair shot!

    BKL0FLY.jpg

Christopher Daniels looks down at Rhyno and spits on him, then guides Anderson and Diamond to follow him in the ring where the three ambush RVD, Dreamer, and Sandman!

While Anderson is beating down on Dreamer who he definitely still has unfinished business with from last month, and Diamond is beating down on Sandman, Daniels with no remorse destroys the back of Rob Van Dam with his chair.

Daniels looks at the chair that is now bent and nods; satisfied. Daniels calls for Rob Van Dam to slowly get to a kneel and cracks him in the back of the head with the chair! Daniels calls for Simply Luscious to come in which she beams with joy, Luscious hands out a shirt to Daniels that he raises up with the words "Luscious Dynasty" in big and bold to end the show.

After a good two months show, the high school from Staten Island that we've been hosting our few shows at asked us if we could run a show on the day of their anniversary; a special show from everyone who's attending the anniversary event.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Gabe:</strong> Hey, Paul, I wasn't able to attract any bigger names to come in for the show this month unfortunately. Looks like we'll have to be using the usual roster.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Paul:</strong> Ah that's fine, we'll have to work our way to working through relationships with the bigger companies. I have a few ideas in mind for the card that correlates to last month's show.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Gabe:</strong> Fair. What do you got in mind?</p><p> </p><p>

    <strong>Paul:</strong> Hmm, here.</p><p> </p><p>

Rob Van Dam, Tommy Dreamer, and Sandman vs Rhino and Diamond Dynasty (C.W. Anderson and Simon Diamond)</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Gabe:</strong> Not so bad. I don't think this card is as good as last two month's shows, but this show is for the people, not us.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Paul:</strong> Right. Anyways, let's get back to working out <em>championships</em>...</p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

The New York crowd loves Tommy Dreamer so it wasn't very hard for C.W. Anderson to get good heat out of them. Dreamer took the win with his signature Piledriver maneuver; but while celebrating his victory he was attacked by this man:</p><p> </p><p> <img alt="c9xTqNd.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/c9xTqNd.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> Simon Diamond! From there on, Rhyno dominated the match; using various power moves and tossing RVD around. <strong>Paul:</strong> Honestly Van Dam, I seriously wonder how you're able to pull off performances like this constantly.</p><p> </p><p>

    <img alt="DQPWZdv.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/DQPWZdv.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p>

<strong>RVD:</strong> That's just what I do Paul. Low Ki's an incredible talent man, you need to make sure that kid stays at the top cause he can definitely be a big guy for you guys.</p><p> </p><p>

I nodded off to RVD and then let him go. Today was a good show wand I won't lie, both me and Gabe were giddy in excitement from the reaction to Rhyno's debut. Along with me quitting the WWF, Rhyno left with me; seemingly unhappy with what storylines were being thrown at him in the later months.</p><p> </p><p>

Unfortunately that doesn't mean he's not safe from getting another contract call eventually. For now we have to use him to the best of his abilities. Going into the next few months, me and Gabe want to try out new concepts and different ideas, which may not seem appealing at first but surely we know how to get things working.</p><p> </p><p>

Next month me and Gabe decided on running the "Round Robin Challenge", a series of three matches between Low Ki, RVD, and Rhyno. Merely a bragging rights to see who's the better one out of the three as our eyes are unglued from any title picture at the moment.</p><p> </p><p>

With the show not until the end of the next month, I have some personal time to relax and then eventually get to working on the card. I'd consider this first show a major success by any means.</p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Rob Van Dam comes into this match with the fans completely behind him. Low Ki isn't a complete unknown to the fans in New York but he had tough business going up against Rob Van Dam.</p><p> </p><p> Low Ki brought all he could against Van Dam, bringing some of his stiff strikes and tried to put Van Dam out with some brutal grappling moves. But the inexperience and impatience showed, and the moment Van Dam was able to pinpoint a usually easy-avoidable mistake he struck and took advantage.</p><p> </p><p> It was a mix of control being taken, but eventually after Van Dam could string together a sequence of moves, ending with his trademark Rolling Thunder, he tried for a pin only to get a two count. Van Dam went to the top rope, but Low Ki was able to get to his feet and nail Van Dam with a hard punch. A few hard punches later Low Ki was on the top rope, trying to end Van Dam for good. A hurricanrana attempt fails as Van Dam lets him fall straight onto his stomach. Low Ki, while still in pain rolled over, forgetting this gave RVD easy set up for the Five Star Frog Splash to take the win in an amazing match and first main event for ROH history!</p><p> </p><p> RVD stood in the center of the ring, celebrating his victory while his theme played. RVD obviously didn't leave the match unscathed, still licking his wounds in the center of the ring. Low Ki stepped out the ring to the top rope where he nailed a Ghetto Stomp that may have punctured Rob Van Dam's lungs!</p><p> </p><p> Low Ki wasn't finished though. Rhyno breathes heavily, stomping and grunting around the ring as Low Ki lays there, folded in half from the gore. How is Rhyno here? He doesn't even work for ROH!</p><p> </p><p> Rhyno shakes the ropes, nodding. Rhyno heads over to Rob Van Dam, offering his hand to him and helping him up. Hype had slowly been begun and was now being built up leading to ROH's first show. Working on this show alone would've been hard, but it seems Gabe was quick to pick up the business aspect that I severely lacked when running with ECW.</p><p> </p><p>

We decided to run a two hour show, but unfortunately there wasn't enough interested garnered from any broadcasters to get us on PPV or TV, so we'll hve to release the show strictly on DVD and Home Video, which is perfectly fine now.</p><p> </p><p>

This show won't be a major impact to the wrestling industry but I am gonna work my hardest little by little to stick it to Vince for everything he's done to me these past few years.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Paul:</strong> Calm down Gabe, I know what I'm doing with this kid. I think this is a good card, what about you?</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Gabe:</strong> A few things could be adjusted show time but I think this is a first starting card. I'll get the arena booked and notify the wrestlers of the show and we'll be on with it, huh?</p><p> </p><p>

I nodded off to Gabe and the time heading up to the show was pretty smooth. There was no issues and we were almost there. This was make or break. After all people have had to say about ECW, about me, all the crap I had to deal with Vince turning all my ideas down, I can finally go back to sticking all that crap back to them under my own rules. Here we go.</p></div><p></p><p></p>

  12. KzvtqjK.jpg

"What do you mean you're not going with the goddamn storyline Vince?"

The tension had been high in the company meeting with me and Vince. There was definitely a few points I wanted to take a page out of RVD's book and just tell Vince to pick a hand. But I was better than that, or was I?

After pitching a whole Invasion angle between WCW and ECW, signing some ECW guys to short contracts to take part in the invasion, he agrees to it. I pitched that if the fans get behind him, we could have a potential major star in Rob Van Dam.

And then he goes to tell me that he's cutting the plug on the whole storyline and won't be hiring any of the guys I suggested with this half-assed apologetic look on his face, he obviously doesn't care or how angry I look because he's sure his stooges will immediately try and get me outta here the moment I get any closer to him.

    Ef1mbb6.jpg

"I'm sorry Paul. It's just that since WCW is dead, we don't really have competition and don't need any 'groundbreaking' stories like this at the moment."

I stared at him blankly. I couldn't believe these words were actually coming from Vince McMahon from all people. Actually no, that's a lie. I fully expected something like this to happen; but not at the extent that it's happening right now.

"What do you mean you don't need any groundbreaking stories? This is the storyline that could change the entire landscape of the WWF, and you're throwing it away like nothing?"

"You're damn right I am. Don't ever yell at me like that or I'll get your ass outta here."

"That's funny you say that Vince. Screw that I QUIT!"

    **

I don't regret walking out. May 2001, and instead of taking my idea, WWF goes back to the same old, same old. I made a call to someone I've known for years. Could trust, and it turns out he brought some cash with him.

    Uh69Lnp.jpg

"Paul. It's funny you come to me. I've actually had this company idea in the works.. I've been able to sell the company idea out to investors and as long as we can stay successful, they'll make sure we're successful financially."

"That sounds great Gabe. How about I help you assemble a roster and we can get to starting things? Lay down the company to me."

"Well, I like to call it..

In a decent match, KAZ and DESTINY defeated X-Calibre and HUSTLE-X in 12:48 when KAZ defeated X-Calibre by pinfall with a Super Rana. 55 C-

This match was simply just a testing of teams, and it seems that KAZ and DESTINY are the better put together team, as they take the win in very convincing fashion. The two stars of Pro Wrestling SAISHO did not hold back tonight against their adversaries and this just allowed for KAZ to brag about yet another win.

When they got to the back, as foretold, KAZ and the winning team flapped their gums to the camera man until they couldn't anymore, and said that they're an unstoppable trio and if the EX2010 Management wants their roster in tact, they should give them title shots considering they're already dominant.

In a bout that had great wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Masao Tsubouchi and Massive Thunder defeated Silver Shark and The Revengers in 14:34 when Masao Tsubouchi defeated Silver Shark by pinfall with a Brainbuster Suplex. 64 C

A jam-packed six man tag team match and an easy contender for match of the night. All six men in this match had a certain hatred for each other and they showed that in the ring, throwing their all at each other, making for a great match. Throughout the match, the main story being told was the fact Masao Tsubouchi was tired of old man and proved he was out of wack by pinning him clean in the center of the ring while Massive Thunder and The Revengers brawled outside the ring.

Backstage, Tsubouchi said aggressively that if Silver Shark wants more, there's always time for a match tomorrow at Silver Dragon Battle in Chugoku.

In a bout that had great wrestling and good heat, Burning EXILE and Orange Tsuchie defeated Stone Yoshikawa and Naoya Shinozaki in 14:56 when Burning EXILE defeated Naoya Shinozaki by pinfall with an Exile Driver. 66 C+

A preview for tommorow night's world title turned into a personal battle. The entire match consisted of Orange Tsuchie and Stone Yoshikawa not exactly wrestling, but throwing potato shots at each other's head. Shot after shot, left some bruises on each other's face and a bit of blood. The real wrestling happened whenever Burning EXILE and Naoya Shinozaki wrestled, Shinozaki doing his best to keep up with the cornerstone wrestler of EX2010. Despite Shinozaki eventually holding his own, he fell victim to the Exile Driver, earning Burning EXILE the win for his team. As soon as the bell rung, both Yoshikawa and Tsuchie entered the ring, throwing stiff shots at each other.

Young boys scattered into the ring, trying to hold them back, Burning EXILE and a groggy Naoya Shinozaki trying to hold their tag partners back. Tsuchie punched through the young boys, but hesitated when Burning EXILE got in his way, only for Shinozaki to come from behind on the other side, attacking Burning EXILE, and a broke free Stone Yoshikawa attacking Tsuchie. Shinozai and Yoshikawa continued their assault, then told Shinozaki to hold Tsuchie, forcing him to watch Yoshikawa brutalize EXILE with multiple devestating chair shots to the back. Yoshikawa then grabbed the hooks of EXILE's mask, slowly untying them, until Tsuchie broke free and punched Shinozaki down, gunning straight for his opponent tommorow until Yoshikawa rolled out and hightailed it with Shinozaki. Shinozaki held his jaw from his punch, and followed after Yoshikawa who shouted out some words to a furious Orange Tsuchie checking on Burning EXILE.

In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Black Iron Corps defeated DISCO Boys in 16:41 when Azumamaro Kita defeated Kaii Hanari by pinfall with a Backdrop Suplex. Black Iron Corps make defence number 4 of their EXODUS World Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles. 60 C

Azumamaro Kita and Fujio Narahashi, the Black Iron Corps certainly did not hold back tonight. DISCO Boys are no stranger to tag gold in EXODUS, but the Black Iron Corps are a new kind of team. The DISCO Boys brought their best every chance they got, but it seemed like every time they'd rally together a huge surge of momentum, Narahashi and Kita would knock them down. They continued their run of isolating Kaii Hanari from Kokei Shoda, and instead of the inevitable hot tag, it was Kita ending Hanari with a Backdrop Suplex.

Backstage, Kita and Narahashi say DISCO Boys brought a bigger challenge than they had expected, but in the end, it's the Black Iron Corps winning and reigning on top as usual. The two then go on to say that there is no tag team at their level and they will be EXODUS World Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions for a very long time. Before they leave the interview area, Narahashi says that he and Kita will be scouting from cross-promotions for some worthy talent for them to face, challenging wrestlers from any country.

In a decent match, Kaoru Shibasawa defeated Tobei Sugimura in 17:59 by pinfall with a Hammerlock DDT. Kaoru Shibasawa makes defence number 5 of his EXODUS All-Asia Junior Heavyweight title. 55 C-

Tobei Sugimura entered this match, with nerves higher than usual. He was hungry for a big win, championship gold, but he got the complete opposite of a fair match that he had earned beating KAZ and Burning EXILE in back to back nights. Early in the match, Rusher Kogo proved to be a major annoyance and a thorn in Sugimura's side on winning this match.

Whenever Sugimura just glanced at Kogo, it allowed Shibasawa to gain advantage, a main you should keep your eyes on at all times. Shibasawa used everything around the ring to his advantage, but that didn't stop Sugimura from being put down. He came back, he had Shibasawa scrambling around.

Sugimura worked towards ignoring a shouting Shinozaki out the ring, and after ducking a lariat that would've steered the match in Shibasawa's favor, he knocked him down with a powerful roundhouse kick. Sugimura scrambled for the cover, and the people were convinced that was it, until Rusher Kogo pulled the referee out the ring to stop a three count that was an inch away from hitting the mat.

Kogo, realizing the referee was down rolled in to take care of Sugimura himself, but Sugimura fought back, but this allowed Shibasawa to come from behind, nailing Sugimura with his belt. Kogo got a few more shots in, then picked up Sugimura, handing him off to Shibasawa, who hit a brutal Hammerlock DDT. Kogo exited the ring, picking up the referee and threw him in the ring to count. One.....Two....Thr-----Sugimura kicks out!

Shibasawa looks up on his knees, then to Kogo outside the ring and even the big man is shocked! Shibasawa yells at the referee, saying that had to be a three count. While Shibasawa is complaining, he forgets that Sugimura is up, and turns straight to a Spinning Wheel Kick! The crowd suddenly becomes loud, that has to be it! Kogo hops on the apron, gaining the ref's attention, but the ref has had enough of it and ejects Kogo!

Kogo yells at the ref, distraught, continuing to stall out while the ref is telling him to go, but someone else rolls in and stomps Sugimura! NAOYA SHINOZAKI?! Shinozaki picks up Sugimura, and drops him with a Piledriver straight on his head! Shinozaki rolls out, and Shibasawa gets up slowly, realizing what just happened with a smirk on his face. Shibasawa picks up Sugimura, twisting into the Hammerlock DDT! Shibasawa rolls Sugimura over, and just like that, it's over; One...Two..Three.

Shibasawa celebrates his victory, standing tall with the EXODUS All Asia Junior Heavyweight Championship next to Naoya Shinozaki and Rusher Kogo, over a downed Tobei Sugimura.

In a decent match, The Legion defeated TARGET in 14:15 when Tobei Sugimura defeated Rusher Kogo by pinfall with a Spinning Wheel Kick. 53 C-

A blood-lusted with revenge Isamu Kijimuta came back, alongside fellow partner Tobei Sugimura to go up against an ex-acquaintance in Rusher Kogo and Kaoru Shibasawa. Kijimuta definitely brought a fire that Shibasawa said he lacked and had Shibasawa hiding behind the bigger Rusher Kogo.

Unfortunately, this was a mistake as Kogo got lured straight into a double team by Sugimura and Kijimuta, allowing for Kijimuta to tag out to Sugimura who easily finished off Kogo to get the victory. After the match ended, Sugimura stared down Kaoru Shibasawa, whom he will be wrestling in just two days for the EX2010 All Asia Junior Heavyweight Championship.

In a bout that had superb wrestling and good heat, Razan Okamoto defeated Commander Kawagishi in 15:21 by pinfall with a Brainbuster Suplex. 71 C+

Okamoto strikes back into the win column with a much-needed victory over last year's Junior Heavyweight Grand Prix winner, Commander Kawagishi. This was a match you'd obviously expect from two men of their styles, going back and forth, trading hard shots after hard shots. The match only lasted the fifteen minute mark as they had gotten tired out and exhausted from the stiff and brutal strikes.

In the end, Okamoto refused to let Kawagishi hit the Diamond Dust, and instead knocked him woosy with a headbutt that was very close to drawing blood from either men. Okamoto hoisted Kawagishi up in the air, to drop him for a Brainbuster Suplex, taking the victory. After the match ended, backstage Okamoto declared that his momentum will ride high in the few months leading up to the Junior Heavyweight Grand Prix.

In an exceptional match, Stone Yoshikawa defeated Burning EXILE in 19:49 by submission with an Ankle Lock. 70 C+

This was Burning EXILE's test to see if he still had it or not, and maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. Definitely, he brought the fight to Yoshikawa who used this match as a warm up for Orange Tsuchie, but certainly was surprised when Burning EXILE's performance resembled some of his back when he used to wrestle for BHOTWG and WLW.

Yoshikawa was able to incapitate EXILE at times, but this performance seemed more from Burning Takashita rather than Burning EXILE. It looked like the major upset from a man who struggles to buy a single win this entire year was about to occur. When EXILE called for the Exile Driver, that allowed Yoshikawa to slip out and nail EXILE with a beautiful Yakuza Kick/German Suplex Combination.

As the match reached it's breaking point, age and sheer technicality played a major difference. Burning EXILE was basically beginning to run on fumes, and struggled to walk after all of the work to his ankle early in the match. Close to tears from the pain, he rose to his feet to bring the fight to Yoshikawa, who instead went for the dirty move, hitting EXILE with a brutal soccer kick to the hurt ankle, and grabbing it to lock in the Ankle Lock. Yoshikawa had taken the clear submission victory, but he wasn't letting go of the submission.

Fans were booing, and referees and young lions alike tried to enter the ring and break off the hold, but Yoshikawa just shoved them away and went back to locking the hold in. An otherwise good-natured crowd was now chanting insults at Yoshikawa, and booing him, something that you don't see in Japanese crowds, this truly shows how much Burning EXILE means to the diehard EX2010 fans attending their shows. Yoshikawa wasn't letting go, until a familiar looking person ran down..

    wLlT6qJ.jpg

    Here comes the calvary!

Orange Tsuchie runs down to the ring, confronting his opponent at Silver Dragon Battle In Chugoku, and nails him with a stiff forearm! Yoshikawa lets go of EXILE and begins to trade shots with Tsuchie, but he's obviously exhausted from his previous match. Tsuchie kicks Yoshikawa into the ropes, and goes for Orange Flash, but Yoshikawa rolls out just in time!

Yoshikawa holds his jaw, wagging his finger. Yoshikawa stumbles up to the steps with a grin on his face. "Not yet!" he yells out. Tsuchie comes over to the ropes where he's at, pointing at Yoshikawa. Tsuchie turns back to Burning EXILE and checks on the twenty-two year old pro.

Tsuchie helps up Burning EXILE and starts up an applause, in which the fans clap for him after the performance tonight. EXILE pats Tsuchie on the shoulder, and bows to each side of the crowd. EXILE waves off for the fans, and steps out, Tsuchie following after.
