UPW:Re-Writing History

The year is 2001 and the wrestling world is in a state of shock. World Championship Wrestling has gone under and the least likely person bought what was left. Vince McMahon, owner of the World Wrestling Federation, purchased WCW in its final hour. The rest of the wrestling world is left wondering, What Next? After buying out WCW, the WWF severed ties with UPW and focused all its energy on OVW as its sole development territory. UPW owner Rick Bassman has sold his company to Robert Nigro. Robert has been a long time wrestling fan and wants to give the viewing public something different for once. He has a dream of taking UPW and creating something new and fresh for everybody to see. This is his story, this is his dream. This is Robert Nigro.

I sat in my new office with my head in my hands and wondered what exactly I was going to do. I just sank all my money into buying this company and I barley have enough to pay for the venue and the talent. I should be ok for the first couple of weeks, but if my booking strategy fails and I don’t pull in the fans, then this company along with myself is sunk. I have 3 ½ hours this Friday to put on the best wrestling show I can muster, and with this talent it should not be hard. The challenge is going to be drawing in the fans. I hope that by making the decision to put us on the Internet will be enough to bring in the fans to our shows. My ultimate dream is to bring UPW up though the ranks and into the mainstream, and to provide the fans of pro-wrestling an alternative to just the WWF. I have the talent to do that, like I said before, it’s just a matter of public interest. I shuffle the papers on my desk and find the booking card for Friday. I currently have the event headlined by Christopher Daniels challenging Samoa Joe for the UPW Heavyweight Title. This match alone should be worth the 10$ admission. My next order of business is the Southern California Heavyweight Title. I need to change that name, it does not click and it does not have that name value. Maybe just the Southern Heavyweight Title? That could work. My current champion is Toney Jones, a good worker, but I do not see a huge future for him. I could be wrong, if handled right he could make it big. I need him to be a credible champion though, so I think I am going to put him in a match against the big man Bison Smith. If he can pull of that match, then I might have to rethink his future in this company. Speaking of this company, I need to tool around with my product a little. If I am going to realize my dream, then I am going to have to present something different to the public. That means cutting back on some workers and bringing in new, exciting talent. The first to go, unfortunately, is going to be Jon Heidenreich…

Tuesday, Week 1, August 2001 The search has begun today. I’ve begun looking at some of the hottest young talent out there and I hope to bring in some of them. I’m looking at guys like AJ Styles, Teddy Hart, Air Paris, The Briscoe Brothers and others. It’s these guys that will be the future of the wrestling business if handled right. I even have my eyes on a couple of bigger name stars to help bring up my credibility, even if they sign for only one show. I’ve released the card so far for this Friday night’s event on the companys website, and I think it’s a pretty good lineup so far. Frankie Kazarian vs. B-Boy UPW Southern Heavyweight Title match Bison Smith (Challenger) vs. Tony Jones (Champion) Tom Howard vs. Low Ki UPW World Heavyweight Title Christopher Daniels (Challenger) vs. Samoa Joe (Champion) Before I go and book any other matches I want to see if I can make any other signings. Perhaps I can get a bigger name to sign with us for one show and really bring in the fans.
