Cutting Edge Wrestling - Independent Wrestling In 2001

Notes: I'm using 2001 data, TEW05. I am aware that it was WWF, and not E at that moment in time, however we're just going to leave the F out. Also, I'm aware that some contracts were bought out by WWE and WCW, therefore it would seem that some people that work in this promotion would've have been able to legally, remember, this isn't reality, but it's close. I started this over at EWB and I'm going to slowly post the first three shows, along with news items here, and then as new shows come out, post them at both. So there is no confusion if you've seen this at EWB, my username there is F#A#, so I'm not stealing a diary or anything awful like that. You'll also see "CEW" at the bottom of every post, that is just the three characters needed to post, since all posts will be in a quote box. ---------------------------------
ProWrestlingNews.com WCW In Ruins, What The Future Holds - Part I March 24th, 2001 Unless you've been under a rock for the past couple of weeks then you're not aware of Vince McMahon buying all of WCW's trademarks and archived footage. The point of this article is not to beat that dead horse anymore however, instead we're looking at what lies next for pro wrestling in the United States, with our eye on one interesting story that has been talked about more and more for the past couple of days. WCW was of course the employer of many talented young and older wrestlers and several questions we at the site have recieved are what will become of them. Japan, Indy's, WWE contracts? For starters whoever at this point will recieve a WWE contract already has one, which leaves us with the rest of the talent pool. This is where former Stampede Wrestling and Border City Wrestling booker and staff member, Nick Menuck, comes into the picture. Menuck has been long associated with Terry Taylor, the man who held the reigns during the final dying days of WCW. These men were of course in constant talks as the selling and buying of WCW got closer and closer. Menuck was also known to have several meetings with Ted Turner, however the subject at hand was never buying WCW, Menuck has slowly amassed funds over his years in and out of the business, however he was never near being able to buy WCW, and that also was never his plan. Menuck has long been interested in starting up his own promotion here in the states, based in the Midwest, around the Chicago area to be exact. It is where he grew up after leaving Canada when he was young and he still has ties to the area. Recently Menuck had even more talks with Ted Turner and until this morning, not a soul besides Menuck, Turner or Taylor knew why. However prowrestlingnews.com as well as many other wrestling news sources have learned that Taylor is also going into business with Menuck and Menuck has looked for funds from Ted Turner. Terry Taylor to this day has a good relationship with Ted Turner, therefore when Taylor and Menuck approached Turner, he said there might be something he could do. Starting the promotion that Menuck and Taylor both wanted to do required of course capital, and when the two men pooled their money together they had roughly $200,000, not exactly the kind of money WWE or the mighty WCW once had. After another week or so of meetings, Turner decided that he would give $50,000 to the project, citing he still wanted to have his name in the wrestling business. Turner would also receive a very small portion of profits from the company, by doing this he figured the company would make money and in time he would be paid back. Therefore it was nothing more than helping out his good friend Taylor and someone else he had met through the business, Nick Menuck. Turner has also stated he would think about giving more money to the project down the road, only if it shows signs that it can be successful enough to help him gain even more of a profit. This news mostly went under the radar in the wrestling world as most people are still discussing that WCW is no more and that Vince McMahon won the war. This story has started to take off this morning though as not only we here at prowrestlingnews.com have learned, but many others that Menuck and Taylor have only been in serious talks so far with former WCW talent. The names that have caught the most attention so far have been Lance Storm, Shane Douglas, Mike Sanders, Billy Kidman, Chavo Guerrero Jr, Fit Finlay and Chris Candido. The mid card that helped hold WCW together for so many years is up for grabs and some reports are already stating that several have been signed to open, pay per apperance contracts. While this news won't make Vince McMahon lose any sleep, wrestling fans that loved the solid mid card action WCW did offer have showed interest. Nick Menuck was well known in Canada for his excellent booking, using in-ring action and more old school angles over any kind of sports entertainment. Many are excited that Menuck and Taylor are about to start up this promotion that will showcase their own style of wrestling, not entertainment to fans across the country. Some of the most interesting news came as this article was being typed up however. Tomorrow Menuck and Taylor told several sites they will have an announcement concerning their business together and that most of the questions that have been asked, will be answered. Check back very soon for the second part of this article as we look at what Nick Menuck and Terry Taylor have in store for the wrestling world.
CEW
ProWrestlingNews.com WCW In Ruins, What The Future Holds - Part II March 24th, 2001 To continue where yesterday's article left off, Nick Menuck and Terry Taylor released lots of information today in reguarding the project they have been planning and are about to carry out very soon. Not really a surprise to anyone, especially if you read our previous article in full, Menuck and Taylor will be opening and running their very own pro wrestling promoion in the near future. Menuck spent lots of time in Stampede Wrestling and Border City, Taylor of course was the last man to hold the reigns in WCW, basically being the one responsible for the booking and running of it's last shows. The two will be working together to run their own promotion that they will base in the Midwest area, and run out of Chicago. Several details including the name of their promotion, Cutting Edge Wrestling and I'm sure the fans in Chicago are already practicing their C-E-W chants as we speak. The next item that most questions have involved what wrestlers will be working for the company and so far there are several that have been confirmed to have a pay per appearane agreement worked out with CEW; those are...Lance Storm, Mike Sanders, Elix Skipper, Mike Awesome, Kaz Hayashi, Shane Douglas, Bam Bam Bigelow, Shane Helms and the young up-and-comer AJ Styles. No date has been set yet for the promotion's first show, however we have been told they would like it to be in Chicago and should be an event that will run for about two hours. More details involving the first show will be cleared up in the very near future however, including what talent will be at the show. When asked by another site on what kind of promotion and shows they would like to put on, Nick Menuck had this to say; "We're not trying to be WCW, WWE or any other company that is out there today. There will be similarities, however we're not molding ourselves after any other company." - "As for what type of shows we will put on, you're not going to see sports entertainment, but you're not going to see something that you would see in Japan either. Our goal is to offer a fantastic in-ring product and have interesting stories without having a soap opera and we think we will succeed." That is all the information we have on Cutting Edge Wrestling for now, however tomorrow or within the next couple of days we should have a list of wrestlers that will be appearing at their first show, plus a possible card for the event.
CEW
ProWrestlingNews.com Cutting Edge Wrestling Release Event Information, Tentative Card Included March 26th, 2001 Cutting Edge Wrestling has posted it's first bit of information on it's website, cewrestling.com, it includes information on it's first event and the tentative card... Cutting Edge Wrestling Presents: First Rights - April 11th, 2001 This premiere showcase of United States independent wrestling talent will be held at the Midlothian Rec Center in Midlothian, Illinois. Whether you're coming from Chicago, Michigan, Wisconsin or anywhere else in the Midwest, we invite you to show up for the best live wrestling you've seen in years. Don't believe us, take a look at the scheduled card for our first ever event! Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Mike Awesome Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. Air Paris Sean O'Haire vs. "The Franchise" Shane Douglas Not only those, but see indy wrestling phenom AJ Styles put to his first true test agains Calgary's own, Lance Storm. However the biggest match of the night will be saved for last of course, squaring off in the main event will be none other than former WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Shane Helms as he takes on a professional wrestling legend and icon, Jushin Thunder Lyger! Also scheduled to appear are Mike Sanders, Al Snow, Chris Candido and more! Do not miss this exciting chance to see the next revolution in professional wrestling, be there the night Cutting Edge Wrestling stood tall and claimed it's First Rights! ***Card Subject To Change*** The initial reaction from most people has been good, landing Jushin Thunder Lyger obviously was only possible due to the ties that head booker and owner Nick Menuck and his partner Terry Taylor have in the business. As of now the most important thing listed in that information is the card is subject to change; for an independent promotion holding it's first show, it's likely that card will not hold up, however Menuck and Taylor both do have a very firm grasp on what they're doing. AJ Styles is someone that many people have been talking about around the country, his athetic skill is only hurt by his lack of in ring experience, putting him in with Lance Storm looks to be a great idea. We will have our full thoughts on the show within the coming weeks after it takes place, our Chicago correspondent will be there and will give us a full run down of the show after it takes place. It is also worth mentioning Menuck and Taylor originally wanted their first several shows in Chicago, however not finding a small enough venue for now is what took that plan out of motion. They're still running out of Illinois though, close to Chicago which they see as a home base for themselves. Make sure to check back soon for the results of the first ever Cutting Edge Wrestling show.
CEW
ProWrestlingNews.com Full Results & Notes from CEW's 'First Rights' April 12th, 2001 Hello readers, my name is Chris Anderson and I am prowrestlingnews.com's Chicago area correspondent, here to give you a full run down of what went down last night at Cutting Edge Wrestling's first ever event, First Rights. The event was being held at the Midlothian Rec Center in Midlothian, Illinois; the building while small, did have quite a few people there for the show. Several I talked to drove at least an hour to get to the show and overall I would say there was just shy of a couple hundred people in attendence. Onto the results though... To open up the night former ECW World Champion Shane Douglas came down to the ring, greeted by non-stop boo's until he began to speak. Douglas was very upset at the fact that not only is he in the opening match of the night, that it's against a "hack" like Sean O'Haire. Nothing more than a reject of a wrestler that doesn't belong in the same ring as "The Franchise" Shane Douglas. Douglas then promised that by the end of the night he would be the star of Cutting Edge Wrestling and that he would put his mark on the promotion, starting by tearing Sean O'Haire apart, piece by piece. (B) "The Franchise" Shane Douglas vs. Sean O'Haire Douglas did a classic "Pearl Harbor" attack to start the match, attacking O'Haire from behind before he could even be prepared. The match spilled to the outside early and involved Douglas sending O'Haire into the crowd. O'Haire responded back with several kicks and knee's and then flipping Douglas over for a back body drop, landing on the protetive mats around the ring. As the match went back inside the ring O'Haire continued to have control, after back to back leg drops O'Haire would get a two count, and then another followed by a tiger suplex. Douglas went back on the offensive however after moving out of the way of a running O'Haire, which sent O'Haire into the ring post. Douglas then spent several minutes working on the right shoulder of O'Haire, including tieing his right arm in the ropes and kicking at the shoulder. O'Haire regained a bit of control after a desperation kick to the jaw, however he dropped down to a knee by the ropes and then right out of the crowd and over the guardrail, Chris Candido went right up to O'Haire and landed a punch square on the jaw. Candido's first looked to be wrapped in some kind of steel chain; after he did the damage he quickly ran right back through the crowd. All of this was missed by the referee as Douglas was distracting him protesting that O'Haire hit him with an illegal object, Candido and Douglas were obviously working together on this one. Douglas then pulled O'Haire back in the ring to hit the Franchiser and score the pinfall. Winner: Shane Douglas via Pinfall @ 10:33 (B-) Billy Kidman vs. Kaz Hayashi vs. Elix Skipper This match was a surprise to everyone in attendence since no mention of it was made previously, however the crowd looked forward to it as all three former WCW cruiserweights went at it, the ring announcer also stated first man to score a pinfall or submission would be the winner. As the match started it was clear there wouldb't be too much mat work during this one, Skipper and Hayashi went into the gaurdrail after Skipper hit him with a suicide dive, then to the crowd's liking Kidman hit a springboard moonsault, almost missing both men however still looked fantastic. Back in the ring a fast pace continued on Skipper ducked under a Kidman dropkick only to eat both boots of Hayashi instead. Hayashi then hit two swinging neckbreakers in a row on Kidman for a near fall. Skipper then hit a dropkick of his own to Hayashi, sending him outside the ring once again. Skipper then went to the apron and attempted a asai moonsault, however in mid air Hayashi hit a dropkick that sent Skipper crashing down in a pretty bad way, however it caused the first ever C-E-W chant from the crowd. Hayashi then went back inside and exchanged armlocks and head scissor takedowns with Kidman as Skipper remained on the outside. Kidman came off the ropes hitting a flying elbow, then went up top, however Hayashi caught up with him. After exchanging punches, Kidman hit a very loud chop that sent Hayashi back down to the canvas. Kidman then hit a second shooting star press right on Hayashi and hooked the leg for a pinfall, just as Skipper slowly crawled back into the ring. Winner: Billy Kidman via Pinfall @ 14:51 (B) Next up, music blasted over the P.A. and Mike Awesome comes out to the same amount of boo's that greeted "The Franchise" earlier in the night. Awesome grabbed a mic and quickly got to his point; he first wanted to publically call Bam Bam Bigelow a coward since he couldn't compete tonight due to an apparent injury, however Awesome feels the whole thing is set up. He says that he would be scared to face Mike Awesome if he were someone like Bam Bam Bigelow. He then demanded to know who his opponent was, and then stated that no matter who it is, he would end the match with an Awesome Bomb within five minutes. (B) Mike Awesome vs. Al Snow Snow ran out from behind the curtain almost before music could hit, he slid right in the ring and started trading punches with Awesome right away. More punches, elbows and kicks to the gut continued on for several minutes. Awesome took Snow down with a hard clothesline, then signaled for the Awesome Bomb. He lifted Snow up in position but Snow fell down behind and started attacking Awesome with forearms to the back. Snow then hit a knee lift, followed by a clothesline of his own to take down Awesome. After dropping two elbow drops, Snow pulls Awesome up and taps his wrist as if he were pointing to a watch which the crowd cheered for. He then pulled Awesome up to his feet, set up for the Snow Plow, however Awesome countered this time, hit a chop, then picked up Snow again for the Awesome Bomb. Snow once again got free, then picked up Awesome and hit a back breaker. After that, it had been at least five to six minutes, the crowd started to chant "time is up", as Snow enocouraged them to do more and more. Snow then whipped Awesome into the ropes, Awesome ducked a clothes line and came flying through the air with his own. Awesome then picked up Snow for the Awesome Bomb and this time hit it. However he then picked up Snow again, more towards the corner, ran a couple feet and almost threw Snow across the ring with the second Awesome Bomb. Awesome then made the cover on a limp Al Snow. After Awesome got the three count he stood up and started to celebrate but was met with a "time was up chant" from the crowd, so he stormed out of the ring and to the back. Winner: Mike Awesome @ 8:54 via Pinfall (B) - Intermission - (During the intermission several people purchased a CEW shirt, simply a black shirt with "CEW: First Rights" across the front, $10 and they seemed to be selling a good amount.) - End Of Intermission - After intermission, former WCW star Mike Sanders came down to the ring with a microphone and talked while walking around the ring as well as in it. Took lots of shots at the crowd, several individuals in particular, drawing lots of heat from the crowd. As he made his way into the ring though he expressed how upset he was that he doesn't have a match tonight, even though he was asked to be here. Therefore he is issuing an open challenge to anyone in CEW or anyone in any other promotion for CEW's next event in about a month, in Chicago. (B) Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. Air Paris Both men got lots of cheers before the match, Tajiri more than Paris though. The match started with a tieup, then Paris backing Tajiri into a corner and hitting him with a chop, then elbows to the jaw. Tajiri then ducked an elbow and started on the offensive of his own, dropping Paris to the canvas with kicks to the legs, then hitting one square in the face which got a nice pop from the crowd. As the match moves on Tajiri continues to dominate with his feet, hanging Paris in the tree of woe and sliding in with both feet hard. After that Paris was bleeding from his nose, didn't look too serious but it very well could've been. As if the sight of his own blood filled him with rage Paris then hit a string of suplexes followed by a cross body block for a near fall. He didn't keep control for long though as Tajiri's feet once again were too much. After several more kicks to the face Paris was once again very much out of it. Tajiri went for his springboard off the ropes into a elbow but Paris had it scouted and gave Tajiri a kick of his own to Tajiri's spine. As Paris pulled Tajiri off the mat and was looking for a finish Tajiri spray's the green mist in the face of Paris. Tajiri then hooks Paris's arms as if were going for a tiger suplex but instead lifts him up and drops him straight on his head like a piledriver, then makes a cover for the three count. Winner: Yoshihiro Tajiri via Pinfall @ 13:57 (C+) Next up Canada's own Lance Storm made his way to the ring and got quite a large amount of heat. Storm couldn't even start talking as once he put the mic up to his mouth he was met with boo's. Once Storm finally started he of course reminded us how much better Canada is than the U.S. and how much better of a wrestler he is than anyone CEW could ever bring in. He said he is disgusted that he will be wrestling the young AJ Styles, as he see's it as nothing more than disrespect. Storm says that tonight he will teach the "young punk" a lesson that he will never forget. (B) Lance Storm vs. AJ Styles Styles was cheered from the start whether it was because the fans knew of him or because of the hate for Storm, either way it was clear the entire building wanted to see Styles pull off the upset. Styles looked good out of the gate, almost as if he was too fast for the technical marvel Storm; once Storm did catch him though he made him pay. Storm kicked the knee of Styles from behind and then went to work on it, driving his own knee into Styles' knee and pulling at the leg, ripping it side to side. Styles landed a few shots and was able to stand even after taking the punishment. Styles hit the Pele which caught Storm off guard which bought Styles some time to recover. As he pulled himself up with ropes Storm got up and was back on the offensive, stomping at Style's knee and then hitting European uppercuts sending Styles back into the corner. Storm backed up and ran at Styles, he then ducked and sent Storm over the ropes onto the floor. Styles would follow, Storm would get up and then whip Styles into the guardrail though. Storm charged again and once again Styles flipped him, this time sending him into the first row. Styles then climbed up on the apron, backed up and ran at Storm, did a front flip into the crowd landing on Storm. This brought on a CEW chant as well as both men taking several minutes to get back into the ring. Back in the ring Styles kept on the offensive, with a powerbomb for a near fall and a ddt for a near fall. As Storm slowly got up Styles went to the top rope, with his back turned Storm rushed up behind him and landed shots on his back. Styles fell down a bit, Storm then grabbed his neck and then hit a neckbreaker off the top turnbuckle to the mat, bringing on another CEW chant. Storm got a near fall and then exploded at the referee with frustration. As Storm turned around Styles met him with a kick to the stomach, then picked him up and set him up for his finisher known as the "Styles Clash", many on the internet have seen clips of it and the fans were going crazy for it, especially after he hit it. Styles made the cover but Storm kicked out just in time; Styles then picked up Storm and tried a kick again, this time Storm caught it and hit a dragon screw whip, not letting go though he then hit two more consecutive ones. With Styles now hardly able to stand, Storm pulled down Styles's knee pad and began stomping away at the knee, even setting it on the bottom rope and dropping elbows onto it. The referee then pulled Storm back, worried about the condition of Styles. Storm then pulled the referee back, while Storm had his back to him Styles stood up; Storm turned around and Styles kicked him in the stomach again, picked him up for the Styles Clash but then let him back down since he knee couldn't hold the weight. Styles then tried for another kick, Storm caught it, pushed Styles down, turned him over and locked on the single leg crab. Styles didn't last long as he began to tap out, however Storm refused to let go of the hold right away. Winner: Lance Storm via Submission @ 20:50 (B) Main Event Shane Helms vs. Jushin Thunder Lyger The crowd was ready for this one indeed, Lyger easily got the biggest reaction from crowd, while small, they made plenty of noise when he came through the curtain. Helms was also getting plenty of cheers, interesting matchup indeed considering the fans were behind both and before it got started both men shook hands in the center of the ring, nice touch. Started with a collar and elbow tieup, Lyger backed Helms into the corner and made a clean break. Another tieup nad this time Helms backed Lyger into the corner and also made a clean break. Helms then took Lyger down with a side headlock, Lyger countered with head scissors and a standing side headlock of his own; Helms sends him into the ropes, ducks down, Lyger comes off the other ropes and hits a beautiful dropkick, flipping in mid air. Helms jumped back up, ducks a clothesine from Lyger and hits his own dropkick, both men then get to their feet and square off which leads to lots of applause from the crowd. Another tieup and the match carried on mostly the same way, many switches and reversals, counters and applause from the crowd after exchanges. Much later in the match the action is out on the floor; Lyger moves out of the way which causes Helms to run into the guardrail, Lyger then goes to the apron and hits a hurricanrana on Helms, sending both to the floor. As the action then made it's way back in the ring, Helms gained control after a drop toe hold and then a standing moonsault for a two count. Helms then lifted Lyger up for a powerbomb, slamed him down and then rolled him over into a Texas cloverleaf which brought on some cheers by the fans. Lyger made his way to the ropes and after both men were standing they took each other out, each with a clothesline. Continuing on later in the match, Helms once again is in control, he sets Lyger up on the top turnbuckle, climbs up himself and looks to be going for a suplerplex, Lyger fights it off and sends Helms to the mat, follows him down, goes for a LygerBomb but it's countered by Helms, Helms then ducks one kick but gets tagged with another right in the back of the head. Lyger then sets Helms up on the top turnbuckle, he goes up himself and Helms pushes him off, Lyger goes back up again, this time hitting a few knee's to the head of Helms. Lyger then grabs Helms which brings the crowd to it's feet, he then lifts Helms up and hits a super-brainbuster right off the top rope. Lyger rolls right over and makes the cover for the three count. Winner: Jushin Thunder Lyger via Pinfall @ 15:43 (C+) As Lyger stands and the crowd cheers after the match Helms slowly makes his way to his feet. He approaches Lyger with the look of payback on his face but extends his hand and the two shake hands one more time which gets even more cheers from the crowd. (B+) Before Lyger and Helms can leave the ring though, Shane Douglas and Chris Candido hit the ring and attack Helms and Lyger after their fifteen minute match. After stomping both men senseless for a minute or so, Douglas starts screaming something about "this is his time" and that he and Candido are the force in Cutting Edge Wrestling. (B) Overall Show Rating: B- Here are the top three men who recieved the biggest heat or pop from the crowd. Heat 1. Shane Douglas 2. Chris Candido 3. Mike Sanders Pop 1. Jushin Thunder Lyger 2 Shane Helms 3. Al Snow Make sure to check back very soon for loads of news and notes reguarding CEW First Rights and their upcoming show next month.
Note: It was decided after this, that match descriptions would be shorter, just a heard up for future shows.
ProWrestlingNews.com Tons of CEW News & More Notes on 'First Rights' April 14th, 2001 To continue on with our coverage of Cutting Edge Wrestling's first ever event, "First Rights", we have several more notes coming out of the show... Many people have emailed and told us there was a camera in the back of the crowd, raised up to record the event. We heard from CEW management prior to the event they had plans to tape the event and release it on VHS, roughly in time to be able to sell it at their second event in May. Elix Skipper's apparent injury was not a work and he did in fact hurt his left knee, to what extent we do not know but it's possible he will miss the next show if he was planned to be booked. We've received several emails from fans who attended the show and all have said they did enjoy it, there were several things they said needed improvement, however we're hearing positive things. The other thing we've been emailed about the most in reguards to CEW is how thrilled people were to see Jushin Thunder Lyger. Many said it was a real treat to see him wrestle live and they were surprised to see him at an event that small. Like we said though, Nick Menuck and Terry Taylor, bookers and owners of CEW have lots of connections from their years spent in the business. - - - - - Concerning workers who may be at upcoming CEW shows, the following name has been thrown around from what we hear, Rey Mysterio Jr, don't get that excited just yet. While landing Jushin Lyger was great for the company, landing Mysterio will be tougher and actually more expensive. As with Lyger he would most likely be brought in for one, maybe two matches to help draw a crowd and then get that crowd more interested in the workers who will continuously be working CEW shows. The last that we heard is that a deal is far from being reached, however it hasn't been ruled out for later this year. The reason Bam Bam Bigelow didn't wrestle this past Wednesday at First Rights was due to several injuries he's been trying to recover from. In the final days before the show Bigelow told CEW management he wouldn't be able to work in the ring, however for the time being he is working backstage since he is a good friend of Terry Taylor and there is a chance he could make a return to the ring in the future. CEW management was said to be happy with several of their younger workers at First Rights, including AJ Styles and Air Paris. Both had great matches, however both do have much to work on before they see main event kind of matches. The plan for some kind of authority figure right now is for Terry Taylor to debut at the next show as someone who gets his orders from behind the scenes and carries them out. Not exactly the man in charge, but someone who has authority, ironic since he has lots of authority as the part owner and booker of CEW. - - - - - *Event Announcement* CEW's next show will be held in Chicago and will be known as "Windy City Showdown", it will be held on May 9th and so far CEW has announced the following matches on their website... Shane Douglas/Chris Candido vs. Shane Helms/Jushin Thunder Lyger AJ Styles vs. Billy Kidman Lance Storm vs. Yoshihiro Tajiri Check back soon for a full, updated card that will not change according to CEW's website. As for now, expect this to be the last match for Jushin Lyger in CEW, it was expected he would originally only be doing one, so this second one looks to be his last for the time being.
CEW
ProWrestlingNews.com Final Card For CEW 'Windy City Showdown' & More May 1st, 2001 CEW has posted the final card for their show on May 9th, Windy City Showdown, on their website. The card is not set to change, therefore expect what you see here to be what you will see at the show. CEW Presents: Windy City Showdown - May 9th - Loyola University Convention Center - Chicago, Illinois AJ Styles vs. Billy Kidman Sean O'Haire vs. Mike Awesome James Maritato vs. Air Paris Nick Dinsmore vs. Jimmy Yang vs. Tony Mamaluke Kaz Hayashi vs. James Gibson (formerly Jamie Noble) Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. Lance Storm Mike Sanders vs. ??? Shane Douglas/Chris Candido vs. Shane Helms/Jushin Thunder Lyger It looks as though someone will accept the challenge made by Sanders and don't be surprised by at least one worker making a debut at the show. CEW would like to continue to build by using the same talent, however injecting more into the mix slowly. The plan as of now is to not have Terry Taylor appear as a authority figure at the show, however that could very well change. If not at this show, there is a good chance he will be at the next to announce how and when the first ever CEW Champion will be crowned. For those that will be attending the event, we encourage you to send in your thoughts and results after the show, we may include any in our official results from the show. Also, for those that plan to attend, from the looks of the card and the amount of matches there is a good chance the show will be running roughly 30 minutes longer than last time, heads up for that. The show is se to begin at 7 and the doors will be open at 6, enjoy the independent action and make sure to check back here soon for full results.
CEW
ProWrestlingNews.com Windy City Showdown Results From Chicago May 10th, 2001 Cutting Edge Wrestling's second event has come and gone and we've been hearing almost nothing but good things coming from those who attended the event. I myself, Chris Anderson, correspondent for prowrestlingnews.com was at the event and I am here to give you results of what happend. I must say that there were more fans at the building than last time, some odd 211 were in the Loyola University Convention Center, it's max is 300. Not a sell out but if CEW continues to put on shows like this one then it will be in no time at all. Billy Kidman vs. AJ Styles Great match to open up with and really get the crowd going and ready for action. Kidman dominated most of the match, with Styles getting small amounts of offense in. Styles did hit a hurricanrana off the tope rope while Kidman was on the apron, followed by a moonsault off the guardrail after that, very easily getting the crowd pumped up. Kidman as said before though would gain back control and keep it for the rest of the match. At one point Styles looked to be ready for something big on the top rope, but Kidman caught him up top. He then hit the biggest spot of the match, a death valley driver off the top rope. After that he positioned Styles, climbed up top and hit a shooting star press for the three count and a great match. Winner: Billy Kidman via Pinfall @ 11:51 (B) Next up some familiar music hit for indy fans around the country and none other than The King Of Old School, Steve Corino made his way out to the ring in wrestling attire. Corino got in the ring and waited for the cheers and chants to stop, then he explained he is here in CEW for one reason and one reason only. That is to prove himself against some of the best competition in the world and it starts here tonight. It starts tonight when he answers the open challenge made by Mike Sanders last month. Corino then said he doesn't want to waste any time at all and wants Sanders out there, now. (B+) Steve Corino vs. Mike Sanders Sanders slowly made his way to the ring and it took him a good two minutes to then get in the ring, being very careful of Corino. Once he did get in the match started and Corino landed a flurry of punches, hip tosses and armdrags. Several times Sanders rolled out of the ring for a break, the third time though Corino followed and looked to be going back to his roots in ECW with brawling on the outside. Corino continued to stay on the offensive on the outside until Sanders moved which sent Corino into the ring post, then Sanders nailed Corino with a steel chair right on top of the head. To many fans surprises Corino was not bleeding, however he was hurting. The referee warned Sanders he would be DQed if he pulled anything else like that but Sanders ignored and started to stomp away at Corino, focusing on the head. After a piledriver, then a ddt Sanders removed the turnbuckle cover and threw Corino's head right into it, bringing on another warning from the referee. Sanders slowly pulled up Sanders but Corino pushed him back and out of nowhere hit a superkick, followed by a clothesline. Sanders charged again and Corino lifted him up and dropped his head right on the exposed turnbuckle, Sanders then wobbled over to Corino allowing him to hit the Old School Expulsion and make the cover. Winner: Steve Corino via Pinfall @ 11:12 (B+) Following the match Corino went outside to pick up the steel chair that Sanders used on him, the referee told Corino not to do anything. Instead of attacking Sanders, Corino put the chair down in the middle and watched as Sanders slowly attempted to get to his feet while the crowd carried on a "King Of Old School" chant. (B+) James Maritato vs. Air Paris This was Maritato's first CEW match and he too, just like Corino looked impressive. Maritato kept Paris grouned for most of the match using a variety of holds and locks, which the crowd showed appreciation for. Maritato hit the Sicilian Slice at one point but Paris was able to kick out. Paris' largest offensive move was a corkscrew plancha, hitting Maritato square across the chest and sending both men over the guardrail and into the front row which of course brought on a CEW chant. After Maritato gained control again though his superior mat skills were too much, eventually reversing an attempted backbreaker by Paris into the Kiss Of Death, which allowed Maritato to score the win. Winner: James Maritato via Pinfall @ 7:36 (B+) Mike Awesome then made his way to the ring and got a hold of a microphone, which caused more boo's than just his presence alone. Awesome said that once again it's a shame that instead of getting real competition, he instead gets to destroy Sean O'Haire. Midway through his rant the crowd had heard enough and started a "pull the plug" chant, followed by a "where's your set" chant, in reference to Awesome's last gimmick in the now bankrupt WCW. Awesome's interaction with the crowd due to the chants is what made the promo not only effective, but hilarious. (A) Mike Awesome vs. Sean O'Haire Awesome seemed to carry his frustration with the crowd into the match, that or he is just continuing his level of intensity that he first displayed CEW's last show, First Rights. For the majority of the first part of the match it went back and forth, both men landing moves, countering and playing to the crowd, although it only resulted in boo's in Awesome's case. O'Haire hit Awesome with a running powerbomb later in the match, which brought on a "that was awesome" chant from the crowd, further taunting Mike Awesome. After Awesome did recover though hit was able to slow down O'Haire with a backbreaker, followed by several shoulder thrusts to the stomach int the corner. Awesome then picked up O'Haire and showed his strength by almost sending O'Haire across the ring with an Awesome Bomb. Then yelling, "thats how it's done" to the crowd; he then did yet another Awesome Bomb to further punish O'Haire, and then made the cover. Winner: Mike Awesome via Pinfall @ 9:33 (B) Jimmy Yang vs. Nick Dinsmore vs. Tony Mamaluke Not much crowd response for this one until Mamaluke came out which started an "FBI" chant, the crowd obviously wanted a Mamaluke and Maritato reunion. As for the match, great action and pace, especially by Dinsmore who isn't known by too many, however many in the crowd seemed to know of him, from his work in OVW. Yang seemed to be the crowd favorite, pulling of the flashiest and most dangerous moves including running up the turnbuckles, jumping and turning around and then jumping off and landing on Dinsmore with a legdrop. At one point Dinsmore laid out Mamaluke, then Yang hit an inziguri on Dinsmore, both men laid right next to each other which allowed Yang the chance to go off the ropes and hit an asai moonsault across both men which was greeted with a CEW chant. Mamaluke made his way to his feet but was met with a variation of a Michinoku Driver by Yang, which was followed by a three count. Winner: Jimmy Yang via Pinfall @ 10:46 (B) :::Intermission::: (Worth noting that tapes of CEW's last show, First Rights, were being sold at the event and mostly during this time, more on this later however.) :::End Of Intermission::: Lance Storm made his way to the ring after intermission, greeted with a chorus of boo's as expected. Storm claimed that he is pound for pound the best wrestler in CEW and that one of the only reasons he came to this company was to be a champion. He then demanded that he is offered a shot at any CEW title when the time comes and he would show just how good he is tonight when he makes Tajiri tap out in the middle of the ring and shows once again that Canada is superior to America, Japan or any other nation. (B) Lance Storm vs. Yoshihiro Tajiri Up to this point the crowd was into this match more than any other and the constant clapping that took place during it was approriate as these two put on an excellent match. Tajiri kept Storm chasing him for the first part of the match, escaping any hold Storm would get on and even going outside of the ring, and once Storm would come back in the ring Tajiri would land a huge kick right across Storm's face. Tajiri would continue to keep Storm off balance, applying the tarantula early on in the match which the crowd of course loved. Storm drove his shoulder into Tajiri's knee from behind soon after though and started his assault on that very body part. Storm used hold after hold to keep the pressure on the knee and leg of Tajiri, at one point even pulling Tajiri to the ring post, going outside and putting the figure four on Tajiri using the ring post which the crowd did appreciate and cheer for. Tajiri tried to gain some offense as the match went on, landing a few kicks but Storm would continue to go after the knee. Tajiri's best chance to make a come back was ruined however when Storm ducked the green mist and instead the referee took it right in the face. This allowed Storm to grab a chair from the outside and target Tajiri's knee for a couple shots while the referee was rolling around blinded. Just as the referee gained his sight back however, Storm locked on the single leg Calgary crab and it didn't take long for Tajiri to tap out. Winner: Lance Storm via Submission @ 14:51 (B+) After the match Storm exited the ring, only to come back to the ring, grab the chair he used before and attack Tajiri's knee several more times with the chair, and then even taking a shot at the referee with it also. (B+) Kaz Hayashi vs. James Gibson This match seemed a bit out of place on the card, although it was used to bring down the crowd a bit before the main event. I wouldn't say it brought them down, it did get them more excited than they were before however as these two went out and put on a great match with the time they had. Gibson was put in the tree of woe early and Hayashi made him pay with three sliding dropkicks to the face in a row which caused some blood from Gibson's mouth, not a surprise when seeing how stiff the shots were. Gibson didn't stay defensive for long though, setting Hayashi on the top turnbuckle and bringing him down with a hangman's neckbreaker which got a near fall. Gibson landed several more moves for near falls including a double underhook that he turned into a piledriver. Hayashi got the last laugh however when he hit a snapmare type move on Gibson as he was sitting on the ground, followed by a dropkick to the face, followed by lifting him up for a suplex, bouncing his legs off the ropes and then using the momentum to hit a brainbuster and then into a cover. Winner: Kaz Hayashi via Pinfall @ 8:46 (B+) We were next graced with the presence of Shane Douglas and Chris Candido who came to the ring before their match as it appeared Douglas had something to say. He was surprised that nobody in the lockerroom last month saw the team of him and Candido coming due to their history together, however he understands since the company isn't employeed by the smartest group of people and the fanbase reflects it. He also stated that the company did get it right this time by putting him in the main event, although Shane Helms and Jushin Thunder Lyger have no business being there with him. He said Candido and himself have no problem finishing what they started last month though, if it meant getting rid of Helms and Lyger for good. (A) Main Event Shane Douglas/Chris Candido vs. Shane Helms/Jushin Thunder Lyger Helms and Douglas started off in the ring together, Douglas wrestled Helms hold for hold on the mat and standing which is worth noting considering not many are aware Douglas can still go hold for hold. Candido and Douglas made several, frequent tags early, and Lyger wasn't tagged in until about halfway into the match. When he was it was against Candido who was met with a dropkick right away, then Douglas on the apron was met with one also. Lyger then hit a snap suplex on Candido, followed by a couple elbow drops, he then tagged Helms who launched over the top rope and hit a leg drop on Candido. Douglas would eventually come back in and went hold for hold with Helms again, also worth noting the match had a very fast pace and the crowd was chanting and cheering from start to finish. Douglas would resort to dirty tactics though with a thumb to the eye and a low blow. Lyger came in to help once Candido came in also; after all four men went at it in the ring for a minute or so, Candido back body dropped Lyger over the top rope, very high in the air and Lyger hit the outside pretty hard. Helms was then left alone which didn't go well for him at all. Candido went to the top rope and squated, Douglas lifted up Helms to Candido and he sent Helms down hard with a top rope powerbomb, called the Blonde Bombshell by Candido. Douglas then picked up Helms and hit the Pittsburgh Plunge and made a ****y cover. Winners: Shane Douglas/Chris Candido via Pinfall @ 12:53 (A) Overall Show Rating: A Top Crowd Reactions: Face:Steve Corino, Jushin Thunder Lyger and Shane Helms Heel:Shane Douglas, Chris Candido and Lance Storm Make sure to check back very soon for notes and thoughts on Windy City Showdown, plus CEW's next event coming up in another month!
ProWrestlingNews.com CEW Windy City Showdown Notes, Plus More May 12th, 2001 As was also stated in our results of CEW's Windy City Showdown, we've recieved almost all positive feedback from those who attended, not to mention the scored the overall event an A. Worth noting that whatever is brewing between Douglas, Candido, Helms and Lyger will no longer involve Lyger for the time being as he is back in Japan and already booked for the next couple months. CEW has confirmed this, stating they're very happy they had a chance to book Lyger for those two shows and look forward to having him back in the future. The debut of Steve Corino couldn't have gone any better last night, the fans loved every minute of his match, not to mention his promo before the match and his taunting of Mike Sanders after. Expect to see plenty more of Corino in CEW as he should become a regular for the company now. Lance Storm mentioned coming to CEW to be a champion last night which lead to several questions from readers, when will CEW introduce a championship? Well, nothing is absolute right now but you can expect bigger news on it at, around, or after CEW's next event. As we also mentioned in the results, VHS tapes of CEW's first event, First Rights, were on sale last night for $10. T-shirts also cost the same, or you could get both for $15. You can now also order either on CEW's website, and expect Windy City Showdown to be on tape next month. Speaking of next month, CEW has announced they will return to the Loyola University Convention Center for 'Windy City Showdown II'. As of now no card has been announced, however a full one should be announced by CEW soon, once it does we will have it on here for you. Make sure to check back soon for the Windy City Showdown II card and any other CEW news; thank you for reading.
CEW
ProWrestlingNews.com CEW Windy City Showdown II Results - Chicago, Ill. June 10th, 2001 Hello fans, it is I, Chris Anderson. I am here to give you the rundown of Cutting Edge Wrestling's, third show in Chicago, entitled Windy City Showdown II. For starters, last time we mentioned the Loyola Convention Center was near capacity with around 211 people in attendance, CEW was proud to announce and I can back them up in saying it was a sell out, all 300 tickets were sold and I did not see an empty seat. Onto the results though. To start things off, Terry Taylor made his way down to the ring and everyone in the building was expecting an announcement concerning a championship...that is what we got. Taylor said he wanted to make it quick and he did, he said he was excited to see that the crowd looked ready for some wrestling. Taylor said that next month, CEW would be holding another show right here in the Loyola Civic Center, in addition to several wrestlers having tag and or singles matches, at the end of the show there will be two different five man over the top rope, "battle royal" matches. The two winners of each match will then face each other at CEW's following event, their second in July, in this very arena. The winner of that match will be crowned the first ever CEW Champion. The crowd loved it and Taylor made a quick exit so the nights matches could get started. (B) Before we could have a match though, Mike Awesome made his way down to the ring, this time to more boo's than last time, which is a hard thing to accomplish. Awesome got on the mic and said he knows there is not a single wrestler in the back that is man enough to face him one on one. He took out Al Snow two months ago and Sean O'Haire last month and he's afraid this month there isn't anyone to step up and take the challenge, Awesome then leaned against the ropes, hoping someone would accept. (B) As Awesome waits in the ring and the fans chant many different names they would love to see come out, they get a bit of a surprise, not to mention I did also. Pantera blasts throughout the arena and no joke, The Whole F'n show, Rob Van Dam comes out through the curtain. RVD has a mic in hand and says that he didn't hear all of what Awesome said since he was in the back and he was "a little distracted", which got a laugh from the fans. He did say that he heard enough and it was time for RVD to to show who rules the ring in CEW, fans chanted along with the RVD and the CEW, great crowd interaction. (B) Mike Awesome vs. Rob Van Dam Cat and mouse would be a good way to describe the early part of this match, RVD taunted and escaped Awesome over and over, which brought the crowd even more into it. The tables turned however when Awesome clotheslined RVD over the guardrail and into the first row. Awesome then went in the ring, and hit a springboard clothesline into the front row, taking out RVD and bringing on a massive CEW chant from the 300 fans in attendence. Awesome kept control as the match went on, with RVD getting random spurts of offense in here and there. Awesome fought off one comeback attempt on the outside of the ring by throwing, yes throwing a chair at the head of RVD, shockingly RVD wasn't out cold because it was a hell of a shot. The referee clearly told Awesome one more thing like that and he would be DQ'd, which brought on a ECW chant from the fans. The match continued on, yet RVD slowly got more and more offense in, he hit rolling thunder and a split leg moonsault, however Awesome kicked out. Near the end of the match, Awesome missed a big boot, RVD missed a spin kick, yet tried for another kick, Awesome caught in and then hit Awesome clean in the back of the head with a stiff enziguri, Awesome responded by falling straight back to the canvas. This allowed RVD to climb up top and hit the Five Star Frog Splash and be the first to pin Awesome in CEW. Winner: Rob Van Dam via Pinfall @ 16:40 (B) James Gibson vs. AJ Styles This was Gibson's chance to pick up his second straight win, and Styles' chance of picking up his first after two previous attempts. Lots of chain wrestling and counters on the mat to start off, Gibson however looked to be in control most of the time. Styles let out fantastic flashes of offense, only brief though. Each time that it looked like Styles would really gain momentum, Gibson would end it with a brutal power move, followed by a submission. After Styles seemed to land funny on his knee when hitting a moonsault to the outside and landing standing up, Gibson took advantage. He worked on the knee for at least five minutes and eventually got in a Texas Cloverleaf, Styles hardly made it to the ropes, once the hold was broken he couldn't stand however. Gibson continued to attack the knee and ended the match with the "Trailer Hitch" submission, which we've been told he will have a new name for. Good showing by both, Styles continues to impress and Gibson looks to be a major player in the midcard for CEW. Winner: James Gibson via Submission @ 13:26 (B-) Steve Corino then made his way down to the ring to many, many cheers. Corino made his first appearance at CEW's second show last month and has been one of the most talked about workers in CEW since that appearance. Corino got on the mic and said that tonight it will be "oh so sweet" to once again defeat Mike Sanders and his big mouth, except this time he can use whatever weapon he would like to. Corino then went outside the ring and said he brought some things tonight for the match and he would like to ask the crowd their opinion. Corino went to one side of the ring and pulled out a table and set it up, which brought cheers from the crowd. He then went to another side and pulled out a steel chain, which got more cheers. He then moved to the next side, and pulled out a ladder and set it up at ringside, this got the biggest pop except for what he pulled out from under the last side. Razorwire. Corino set that in the corner of the ring, climbed back in and said he looks forward to using each and every weapon to send Mike Sanders straight out of CEW. (B+) No DQ Steve Corino vs. Mike Sanders Once Sanders' music hit he ran through the curtain, slid in the ring and started exchanging punches with Corino in the center of the ring. After the slug-fest spilled to the outside, Sanders was whipped into the guardrail, Corino then folded up the ladder and ran at him with it, however Sanders put his feet up and sent the ladder into the face of Corino. Sanders then picked up the ladder twice and dropped it across the back of Corino, before throwing him and the ladder into the ring. Inside the ring Sanders contineud to work on the back of Corino, using a camel clutch, stomps and more ladder shots. Sanders then picked up the steel chain and began whipping it across the back of Corino. After putting the ladder in the corner and sending Corino into it several times, Sanders then grabbed two chairs and put them in the ring. He set both of them up, and set up the folded ladder across them. What came next was hard not to feel yourself a little. Sanders picked up Corino and suplexed him onto the ladder, you could see parts of the steel that were bent from Corino's lower back be smashed into them. After a h*** s*** chant, and a CEW chant, Sanders kept on the assault until Corino got in a low blow. Corino then went on the offensive, wrapping the chain around his fist and hammering Sanders in the head over and over, as Sanders lifted himself off the mat he had blood dripping down his face. Corino was playing to the crowd, so he then didn't notice Sanders pick up the razorwire, he did notice once he turned around and Sanders shoved it into his face, sending Corino to the mat, then rolling outside. When Corino started pulling himself up, he too was wearing a crimson mask, although we all saw that coming. Sanders followed him to the outside and moved the table near them, then put Corino onto the table. He climbed back onto the apron and went at Corino with a elbow drop, Corino moved and Sanders went through the table to the concrete. Back in the ring now Corino has the ladder set on the mat, ready to powerbomb Sanders onto it. He tries to lift him but sets him back down, Sanders then flips Corino over and he lands back first on the ladder again, bringing on the same two chants as before. Corino crawled towards the corner, going after the chain, while Sanders threw out insults at the crowd. When he turned around, Corino hit sanders with a low blow, however he had his fist wrapped in the chain. Corino then hit the Old School Expulsion and made the cover to end the first bloody battle in CEW history. Winner: Steve Corino via Pinfall @ 16:51 (B) :::Intermission::: (During intermission, you could buy CEW First Rights or Windy City Showdown on VHS each for $10, or both for $17. During intermission, the ring area was cleaned up after the no DQ match and Terry Taylor came down to ringside and talked, took pictures and shook hands with as many as he could. Very great to see something like that :::End of Intermission::: Lance Storm vs. James Maritato I know lots of people were excited the minute they saw this match listed on the card when CEW posted it, and it was for good reasons. For some reason this match just had the feel of something big, like a huge boxing match. Both looked as intense as could be, another thing that made it interesting, both would be considered heels at the moment, thus allowing the crowd to enjoy the match and not really cheer for one or the other. The match started out very slow, although nobody seemed to care. Lots of feeling out and quick arm drags and drop toe holds, things of that nature. Lots of reversals on the mat, not really chain moves, but counter after counter to each move, many I don't have names for and the crowd was impressed with the extent of the moves countered and applied. About what would be the halfway point the pace picked up, but not by much, still lots of holds, although not rest holds, each had meaning. Storm as expected eventually went ot work on a leg, while Maritato focused mostly on the right arm of Storm, grapvining it through the ropes and kicking the ropes several times, almost pulling the arm out of socket. The biggest pop from the crowd was when Storm locked in the figure four on the ring post however, after that he got on the single leg crab, however Maritato was able to roll over and escape. As the match went on and never really got too fast paced at all it was great to see the crowd in it the entire time, all the way until the finish. After several more counters on the mat, Storm locked in the Indian death lock, however instead of just falling back he bridged back, pulling up on the chin of Maritato, the crowd cheered and seemed surprised when Maritato tapped out, however they were very pleased with the great story that had just been told. Winner: Lance Storm via Submission @ 21:26 (B+) Kaz Hayashi vs. Air Paris vs. Nick Dinsmore vs. Tony Mamaluke Looking for chaos in the ring, and action going on so non-stop I couldn't comment on all of it? Look no further. Lets just cover the spots and finish in this one, shall we? Dinsmore was the first to be eliminated at 8:12, he ran into a double team by Paris and Kayashi. One that consisted of Hayashi delivering back to back powerbombs, lifting Dinsmore up and then having Paris do a front flip into a leg drop off the top rope. Paris wouldn't last much longer after that though, he fell to a double team of Hayashi and Mamaluke at 11:38. Hayashi hit a crisp brainbuster, Mamaluke then followed it up with a dragon sleeper, forcing Paris to tap out. It was then down to Hayashi and Mamaluke, and the previous theme of the match continued, which was Hayashi dominating. After chops, kicks, another brainbuster, dropkicks and various neck breakers, Hayashi got the win with a Hayashi Cutter. Winner: Kaz Hayashi via Pinfall @ 14:08 (B) Kid Kash vs. Billy Kidman Up next was our second debut of the night, although this one, almost everyone knew about, Kid Kash making his CEW debut. After the technical wrestling exhibition, this was the second match in a row that featured fast action and not too much mat work. I believe I counted five suicide dives and or any kind of dive out of the ring that did more damage to the diver than the target. Kash hit several hurricanrana's, several off the ring apron, one from the top rope while Kidman was on the outside. The end of the match saw the action all in the ring however, after Kidman hit a beautiful dropkick, it looked like Kash would lose his first match, however Kidman missed the shooting star press, allowing Kash to pick up the pieces and hit the Money Maker, a double underhook piledriver to get a easy three count. Winnner: Kid Kash via Pinfall @ 12:37 (B+) Shane Helms then made his way out to the ring for the main event of the evening, however not quite yet. He first wanted to state that he hasn't forgot about last month and the defeat Candido and Douglas put on him. He said even though Douglas isn't here tonight, he will start the path to extracting revenge by beating Candido tonight, especially since it's 1 on 1 and Douglas is nowhere to help. (B+) Main Event Shane Helms vs. Chris Candido The crowd alone made this feel like a main event, especially since these two of clashed at the last two shows. This match was not outstanding, but it was very good and the crowd is what helped. Helms looked to surprise Candido from the start as he was on the offensive for what seemed like an eternity, hitting countless moves, Candido rolled out of the ring several times to escape the attack but Helms followed each time, and each time threw Candido back in the ring and continued. Candido made a comeback with several European uppercuts, kicks to the gut and then a ddt. After gathering himself he then went on the offensive, backing Helms in the corner and hitting a series of chops that left large marks on the chest of Helms in what seemed like an instant. Candido then put Helms in the tree of woe, then ran at him and burried his shoulder hard into the stomach of Helms. Candido then hit a piledriver for a two count, and stayed on Helms like a dog, hardly letting him get up. This went on for more than ten minutes, Helms kept taking a beating, yet kept getting up. When the action was on the outside, Helms moved away from the ring post and Candido went head first into it, then started to bleed and it looked as though he was busted open the hard way, in other words there was no blade involved, he really hit the post hard and had some swelling on his head. After that it was downhill for Candido, Helms hit three dropkicks in a row, a spin heel kick and a flying cross body block. As Candido then started to get up, he stayed on one knee which proved to be the end for him, Helms came flying in and hit a shining wizard, which not only sent Candido down, made the crowd go crazy as you could hear the hit echo around the building. Winner: Shane Helms via Pinfall @ 25:48 (A) After the match, Helms went to every corner of the ring and posed for the fans, then went around the rinig and shook hands for a good fifteen minutes or so, the entire time, hardly anyone left, instead everyone was cheering the fastest rising star in CEW, Shane Helms. (A) Overall Rating: B- Attendance: 300 (Sold Out) Biggest Pop: 1. Shane Helms and Rob Van Dam 2. Steve Corino 3. Kid Kash Biggest Heat: 1. Chris Candido 2. Mike Sanders 3.
ProWrestlingNews.com Tons Of CEW News June 17th, 2001 CEW understands that it's base is in Chicago and they're not fixing what isn't broke. After pulling in a little over two hundred fans a couple of months ago and 300 at their last show, which was a sell out, they've decided their next two events in July will be in the same building. On July 12th, CEW will present 'Road To Glory' and on July 26th, they will present 'A Champion Is Crowned'. Both shows will take place at the Loyola Convention Center on the campus of Loyola University, in Chicago, Illinois. Both shows will start at 7 pm, doors open at 6 and both are expected to run till roughly 9:30. Coming out of Windy City Showdown II, there are many things many people in the independent wrestling community are talking about, however the most talked about one worker is without a doubt, Rob Van Dam. RVD made his CEW debut on June 8th and shocked is the word many people are using. Nothing has been said official yet, however as of now we're speculating that it was not at all a one time thing, that is, we expect RVD to be in CEW down the road. It is not sure if he'll be appearing at either event in July, we will no more when the card is released for 'Road To Glory' in a few days. If there was one worker we had to pick out of CEW so far that has stood above the rest, it would be Shane Helms, although there are others close to him. However, Helms has been in the main event for each of the three shows and each time he has shown he deserves it. First it was his great match with Jushin Lyger, then teaming with Lyger, he took on Douglas and Candido. Then of course on June 8th he picked up his first win, defeating Chris Candido in the main event. Even though Helms was on the losing end twice, he has been very impressive and the fans are embracing him. Shane Helms has a bright future in Cutting Edge Wrestling. There are two matches though that most people are talking about after the June 8th show, besides the main event. Steve Corino vs. Mike Sanders and Lance Storm vs. James Maritato. This is what CEW has done right so far, two very different matches, yet two very good matches. Lets look at each one... Corino vs. Sanders; wow, who knew Mike Sanders had it in him? Now, he didn't take the kind of bumps that Corino took, especially on that ladder, but he put on a great show and played his part perfectly. Corino on the other hand put his body on the line like he has done many times before; this time though, he has a trashed ladder to show for it. Even hardcore wrestling fans must admit they were a bit "wowed" by the brutal bumps Corino took on the ladder, it was a human body smashing into steel, nothing more, and it was tough to watch for someone not expecting to see it. Great match by both men, it will be interesting to see if this carries the feud that has started between these two anywhere else. The next is James Maritato vs. Lance Storm; I think some tape traders that are technical wrestling fans will want this tape to come out now. Easily one of the best matches either man has ever put on and it was great to see the fans love this just as much as the main event or the no DQ match. Storm looks like he has once again elevated his game, and Maritato is no slouch either. Storm has looked great in each match he has had in CEW though, and it will be interesting to see if he will capture gold, while we don't know if he will, we do think he will have a chance at least. There were a couple of injuries we got emails about, the first wondering if AJ Stlyes really did hurt his knee in his match with James Gibson, the answer is no, however not only did he do a great job of selling, Gibson did a great job at focusing an attack on it. Another was Chris Candido; Candido did get busted open from hitting the ring post against Helms and we're told it was nothing more than that, he did recieve a few stiches to close the cut, however nothing serious. We also recieved several emails wondering if Steve Corino suffered any injuries after the beating he took and as far as we know he just has a couple bruises, otherwise he said he is looking forward to the nex CEW event. If you missed our coverage of CEW Windy City Showdown II, Terry Taylor announced at 'Road To Glory' there will be two matches that decide a CEW Championship match. There will be two, five man battle royal matches, the winner of each one will then face each other at 'A Champion Is Crowned' on July 26th to crown the first ever CEW Champion. Nobody knows who will be in those matches yet until the card is released in a few days, we do know that several workers will compete in matches before the two battle royal matches at the end of the night. Make sure to check back soon for more CEW news and notes, plus in our next update we will have a full card for CEW's 'Road To Glory'.
CEW

* - This match is a taste of what CEW is planning for the future as they would like to introduce a tag team championship, expect to see more tag matches at the next couple of shows, leading up to their event entitled 'Tag Team Showcase'. ** - This match has surprised many people, it was known CEW would have some connections to Japan as show with Jushin Lyger, however it wasn't known more would be on their way over. Homicide of course is an American who has cut his teeth in the indy circut for years and has worked in Japan. These two teams could be seen again as the time nears for a tag team championship. *** - This will be technical sensation Doug William's first appearance in CEW and what a match it should be. Storm and Maritato put on a clinic last time, we expect to see the same from this. **** - These are the matches that will decide who will face off for the CEW World Championship. We have our own opinions on who we don't think should've made it in the matches and who else should've, RVD for example. However we understand CEW is trying to get it's feet underneath them and are still working on seting up things for the future. Overall, the card looks like it could be the weakest they've put out, at least on paper. It should still be an exciting night of indy wrestling with several workers making their CEW debut. CEW has also announced several more events on their site, good to see lots of future venue booking has been done, also interesting to note that three of the shows will be outside of Chicago, four in different venues than the Loyola Convention Center. CEW Upcoming Dates, Tickets On Sale NOW!
ProWrestlingNews.com CEW Road To Glory Full Results From Chicago July 2, 2001 Heading into this event, many had said that CEW had it's worst card on paper, however we knew that wouldn't stop Terry Taylor and Nick Menuck from trying to still put on the best show possible as they lead into their future shows and continue to build this promotion from the ground up. So without any further wait, here is the rundown of CEW's 'Road To Glory', the fourth show for CEW. F.B.I vs. Air Paris & AJ Styles Good to see some tag team wrestling to start the show off, especially considering CEW is trying to build a tag division for their 'Tag Team Showcase' show that is coming up. Maritato and Paris were the two men that started the match off, F.B.I were able to keep Paris in the match for quite awhile, using frequent tags. It didn't take too long for Styles to get involved though, once the tag was made to him he cleaned house and took out Mamaluke with a front flip to the outside of the ring, which sent both men to the ground hard. Styles made his way up first however and continued to take on Maritato, however Maritato proved to be too much. After Maritato took down Styles with a tiger suplex, he then hit the kiss of death on Paris. Mamaluke then made his way back into the ring and sat on the top turnbuckle, Maritato pushed Styles in that direction and Mamaluke then hit a tornado ddt. Maritato, the legal man, then applied the Sicilian Crab, causing Styles to tap out. Winners: F.B.I via Submission @ 12:57 (B) CEW's resident "big mouth" then made his way to the ring to speak his mind. Once he in the ring Sanders said that even after his brutal match last month which he lost because of bad luck, he is still here tonight to compete. He then said he's a little shocked that CEW would put in front of him a "nobody" and a punk like Ace Steel. However, Sanders said he would be more than happy to show Ace Steel who the real deal is. (B) Mike Sanders vs. Ace Steel Steel sprinted to the ring, slide in and started trading punches with Sanders right away. Steel got the upperhand and Sanders dropped down and rolled out of the ring. Steel went right after him though, hitting forearms across the back, then throwing Sanders back into the ring. Steel then tried for a cover but got a two count, then picked up Sanders and hit a swinging neckbreaker, then went to the apron and hit a slingshot leg drop for another two count. Steel continued with the fast pace offense until Sanders moved out of the corner and a charing Steel ran his shoulder in the guardrail, allowing Sanders to capitalize. Sanders focus on the shoulder for a couple of minutes, repeated shoulder breakers, arm ringers and hammerlocks caused Steel to scream in pain, it ended though when Sanders hit the End Result, causing further damage to the shoulder and picking up the win. Winner: Mike Sanders via Pinfall @ 7:49 (C+) Simon Diamond vs. Sean O'Haire This was Diamond's first CEW show, O'Haire's second and he was the crowd favorite. That couldn't help him over power Diamond's intense technical mat game though. For the better part of the first half of the match, Diamond kept O'Haire on one knee, on his back or in a submission, never allowing O'Haire to use his power. After minutes of wearing down O'Haire, Diamond then hit several moves including his gem cutter, similar to the diamond cutter and a piledriver. Nearing the end of the match O'Haire got in his only bit of offense, a high roundhouse kick, followed by a spinning heel kick. Other than that, O'Haire was taking abuse most of the match and it ended when Diamond hit the Simonizer to lay out O'Haire. Winner: Simon Diamond via Pinfall @ 10:51 (B+) Jimmy Yang vs. Al Snow vs. Nick Dinsmore Dinsmore should've not even shown up considering his only part in this match was repeated moves by Yang, followed by him slowly recovering. Snow looked good and challenged Yang most of the match though, hitting the Snowplot halfway through the match he eliminated Dinsmore at the 6:14 mark, who hadn't got a single move in. Yang then stayed in contorl however, hitting a belly to belly suplex, superkick and then a Michinoku Driver II, then moving Snow near the corner and hitting a corkscrew 450 splash and allowing him to get the cover. Winner: Jimmy Yang via Pinfall @ 12:17 (B) Masayuki Naruse & Kaz Hayashi vs. Tsubasa & Homicide Another match here allowing CEW to attempt to establish some tag team wrestling, this one was odd also considering all four men hadn't wrestled for CEW before, but are a welcome addition to the roster. While most had hopes of this being a great bout, it did come up short. The match was plagued with too much slow action, that was really action at all. It did have it's moments though, such as Homicide hitting a Yakuza kick on Hayashi who was on one knee and then basically followed right through and hit Naruse who was hung up in the tree of woe. Tsubasa went for a moonsault on Naruse later in the match, however Naruse caught Tsubasa in mid-air and made him pay with a death valley driver, followed by a standing moonsault from Hayashi, and a near fall. Homicide continued later to have most of the offense for his side, after hitting his "Cop Killa" on Naruse, he then looked to hit the same on Hayashi who was the legal man, instead, Hayashi escaped, only to hit a Hayashi Cutter, then put on a Crunch Loop, or a reverse figure four, which lead to Homicide tapping out. Winners: Masayuki Naruse & Kaz Hayashi via Submission @ 13:12 (C+) :::Intermission::: As usual, CEW had tapes on sale of their previous events. First Rights - $8, Windy City Showdown - $10, Windy City Showdown II - $10. Or you could purchase all three tapes for $22, they also once again had CEW shirts on sale that simply had CEW on the front, however there was a sign that said they would have several more designs at the next show. :::End Of Intermission::: Mike Awesome vs. Alex Wright Two former WCW wrestlers facing off in this one, Awesome has had a mean streak in CEW yet was beat last week by RVD so this was Wright's chance to prove himself in his first CEW match. Wright certainly did try, however Awesome seemed to be trying harder. Throughout the match, Awesome would yell he's better than RVD or that he will do this and this to RVD when he see's him, all this while Wright was being dominated. Awesome hti an Awesome bomb at one point, however didn't go for a pin. Instead he kept on Wright, hitting a splash from the top rope, lifting Wright up twice and dropping him neck first across the top ropes, then ended it with another Awesome Bomb. Winner: Mike Awesome via Pinfall @ 9:54 (B) Lance Storm made his way down to the ring, and as usual was greeted by many loud boo's. Storm got on the mic and said that he doesn't like talking and would much rather simply wrestle. However he thinks it needs to be said that not only will be beat Doug Williams here tonight, he will then win a shot at the CEW World Championship later in the show, proving that he is the best in this company. (B+) Lance Storm vs. Doug Williams Williams got a great response from the crowd on his way down to the ring, and continued to during the match. Unlike any other opponent Storm faced so far in CEW, Williams really kept him on the ropes and kept on the offensive. Hitting Storm with a northern lights suplex for a two count, then a german suplex for a two count, then into a bow and arrow submission, that Williams eventually broke before Storm tapped. Storm stopped the offense with a superkick later in the match and then went on his on offensive spree, hitting dropkicks and several snap suplexes. Much later in the match, Storm went to the top rope however Williams hit the top rope thus having storm straddle the turnbuckle. Williams then climbed up with storm, pulled him up and hit a super brainbuster, off the top rope, causing a loud CEW chant to errupt. After Williams slowly made a cover he still only got a two count. The more Williams pushed Storm later in the match, the more Storm would fight back, hitting a double underhook into a back breaker, then into a sharpshooter, however Williams would fight his way to the ropes. As the match kept going on, Storm began to slowly maintain control and after ducking a huge lariat, both men hit the ropes again, this time however Storm managed to roll through, grabbing the leg of Doug Williams and applying the Canadian Maple Leaf or single leg crab. Williams would get within an inch of the ropes, however Storm pulled him back to the center and Williams was forced to tap. Winner: Lance Storm via Submission @ 13:15 (B) Main Event I #1 Contender's Match For CEW World Championship Over The Top Rope Battle Royal Chris Candido vs. Shane Helms vs. Steve Corino vs. Kaz Hayashi vs. Kid Kash The match started with all five men in the ring at once, and not much else can be said except it was a free for all. Steve Corino did actually have some bruises on his back from his no DQ match last month, yet he seemed to be fine. None of the men held back and Hayashi even seemed fine after wrestling earlier in the night. Kid Kash was the first to be eliminated, Shane Helms hit a enziguri, then jumped up and hit a dropkick that sent Kash over the top rope and to the floor at 7:18. The next to be eliminated would be Kaz Hayashi, Candido took care of him; after Corino executed a belly to back suplex on Hayashi, Candido picked him up and threw him over the top rope at 11:48. Corino and Candido then started to really go at it, Helms them joined in taking shots at Candido. Corino then went after Helms, hammering away at him in the corner, which allowed Candido to up from behind and simply lift Corino over the rope and to the floor at 15:29. This left Shane Helms against Chris Candido in a rematch of last weeks main event, this like last week went back and forth until the finish, Candido hit Helms to the outside but Helms stayed on the apron, he then ducked a punch from Candido and drove a shoulder into Candido's stomach. Helms then jumped up on the top rope to springboard in, however Candido then hit a hard clothesline just as Helms was about to jump, sending him down to the floor. Winner: Chris Candido @ 19:50 (B+) Main Event II #1 Contender's Match For CEW World Championship Over The Top Rope Battle Royal Shane Douglas vs. Billy Kidman vs. Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. Mike Awesome vs. Lance Storm This one started the same as the first one, all five men in the ring at once and all going right after each other. Billy Kidman was the first to be eliminated, being lifted up over the head of Mike Awesome and then thrown down hard to the floor at 6:12. Tajiri would be the next to go, Awesome would also eliminate him the same way Kidman was thrown out, Tajiri hit the floor at 9:51. Storm and Douglas then teamed up a bit, going after Awesome. Storm took out one of his knees and Douglas then stomped away. Awesome then fought both of them off, he then got sent into the ropes though, Douglas and Storm ducked a double clothesline, turned around and hit a double clothesline of their own on Awesome, sending him over the top rope at 16:35. Douglas hit storm from behind right away and even though the crowd hated both men, they hated Douglas more and it showed. Storm slowly fought back, chop after chop, until Douglas went down and hit a low blow, then hit the Pittsburgh Plunge. Douglas was slow to get up himself, he did get up soon and pulled Storm up with him, he then threw Storm over the top rope, Storm however landed on the apron and came right back in, Douglas missed a running knee and went over the top rope himself and onto the apron. Storm then ran right at Douglas and went for a running forearm, Douglas bent down just enough though to flip Storm over him and to the outside to win the match. Winner: Shane Douglas @ 19:42 Overall Rating: B- Attendance: 300 (Sold Out) Biggest Pop: 1. Shane Helms 2. Steve Corino 3. Doug Williams Biggest Heat: 1. Shane Douglas and Chris Candido 2. Mike Sanders 3. Lance Storm Check back soon for CEW news and notes, plus news and a card for CEW's next event, 'A Champion Is Crowned', it will be the two partners, Shane Douglas and Chris Candido, going one on one to decide the first ever CEW World Champion.
CEW
