Coming up Next Week, At NMW Tag-Team World War The World Tag-Team Title Tournament The first holders of the NMW World Tag-Team titles will be decided, with teams from every corner of the globe competing to be our first champions. Featuring Team Lucha from Mexico (Luis Montero Jr and Raul Sanz) taking on the EU's representatives, The Foreign Legion in a round while match-up, while Team USA (Ultimate Phoenix and Masked Cougar) take on the Australian Walkabout Brothers in order to claim a spot in the finals. Ralph Runga vs. Jack Griffiths Jack Griffiths has issued an open challenge, claiming he's better than everyone in the NMW locker room and he's not afraid to prove it. Ralph Runga was first in line to answer the call, hoping for a chance to redeem his loss to Griffiths at London's Burning. Can the New Zealand rookie stand up the the American veteran, or will this simply be a case of history repeating? Merle O'Curle vs. Nick Raven NMW Lucha-Brittania Champsionship Merle may have been beaten in the Lucha-Britannia tournament, but he earned his title shot by defeating the champ last month at London's Burning. This will be Raven's first defense of the belt, going up against a man who has already proven he can beat the champ. Miss Information vs. Ellen Bathory A clash between two of our hottest female wrestlers, with Miss Information claiming that Bathory is too concerned with ensuring her boyfriends success to worry about winning her own matches. Bathory says that she's already proven everything she needs to in regards to our women's devision - this match is simply an afterthought. Barry Griffin vs. Keith Adams Submission Match Barry Griffin has made boasts about his strong-style prowess, claiming to be the penultimate submission specialist in NMW. Keith Adams has taken exception to that claim and, if his recent work in NMW and ROF is anything to go by, may well be the man who can make Griffin tap out. Quick Picks Team Lucha vs. The Foreign Legion Team USA vs. the Walkabout Brothers Ralph Runga vs. Jack Griffiths Merle O'Curle vs. Nick Raven Miss Information vs. Ellen Bathory Barry Griffin vs. Keith Adams

Team Lucha vs. The Foreign Legion Team USA vs. the Walkabout Brothers Ralph Runga vs. Jack Griffiths Merle O'Curle vs. Nick Raven Miss Information vs. Ellen Bathory Barry Griffin vs. Keith Adams I don't think Adams will be the one to stop Griffin's progress. I can see Raven tying up his series with O'Curle, especially so his title reign isn't over in a flash. Plus I think you'll keep that rivalry going. Griffith to beat Runga again though. You seem keen on your created Bathory and Walkabout Brothers characters, so I'll go with those to continue getting a push. And I think the Foreign Legion are your jobbing team right now.

Good stuff so far, been following this quietly for a while now and thought it was about time I put my two cents worth in, OK that just means me trying to psycho-analyze your booking by giving my predictions ;) Wasn't sure how I would take to the 'Australian's' generated for this diary at first but you've done a good job of getting them over (in a diary sense) and making them feel a natural fit with the established cornellverse characters. Prop's also for the Lucha- Britannia title which is a unique title idea, it's just a shame that the game has a glitch when it comes to 2 out of 3 falls matches, by insisting that the deciding fall is always decided by a tainted finish (such as a foot on the ropes) , so you may want to take 'creative license' and actually have one of those matches finish clean in the diary. Anyway onto Predictions..... Team Lucha vs. The Foreign Legion Team USA vs. the Walkabout Brothers Ralph Runga vs. Jack Griffiths Merle O'Curle vs. Nick Raven Miss Information vs. Ellen Bathory Barry Griffin vs. Keith Adams OK to be honest I can't help but agree with what Marcel Fromage said in his predictions and there's little point me saying much more than that.

Team Lucha vs. The Foreign Legion Team USA vs. the Walkabout Brothers Ralph Runga vs. Jack Griffiths Merle O'Curle vs. Nick Raven (DRAW) Miss Information vs. Ellen Bathory Barry Griffin vs. Keith Adams I thought I'd throw in a Draw between Rave and O'Curle (it pushes back their blow off match, and allows O'Curle more time to "rub" off on Raven training wise.) I also picked the foreign legion, mainly because, although they have potential, I've never gotten squat out of them as a team. Also... if you're not a big fan of Jed High (you could always use an angle where he goes back to his true name as their is picture in the file under that name).

The match exhibited the DuPont’s talent as tag-team tacticians, with Otto Hammerschmidt doing a great impression of the world’s most up-tight cheerleader in their corner throughout the match. Mal caught Masked Cougar in a spike piledriver, getting a two count, then Cougar tagged in Phoenix and the Walkabouts demolished him with a brutal clothesline/chop-block combination. Mike locked in a triangle choke to pick up the submission victory and see the Walkabout Brother’s advance to the finals. He tells the audience that he’s here to compete, not to earn money, no matter what Griffith thinks. Battler takes over and tells the audience that the Icon of Old School may have won last week, but he’s here to guide his student to victory and prove that Australian wrestling has a place in this company. This gets on the nerves of some backpackers in the crowd who start a “he’s a kiwi” joke, but Battler is prepared for the reaction and cuts the tension. Battler: Of course he’s a kiwi. I know it, you know it, but he’s facing an American tonight and they get confused when you tell them there's such a thing as the Southern Hemispher. We don't want Griffith confused, we want him ready. The Icon of Old School set the pace of this match, slowing Runga down with submission holds or quick chops to the chest every time the former All-Black tried to get some momentum going. Runga did manage to hit his trademark spear at the ten minute mark, popping the crowd as he scored a quick two-count, but Griffith recovered and put things away with a Jack in the Box. There is a quick brawl outside the ring, with the Alliance taking advantage of their three-on-two advantage. Walkabout Mal eventually falls prey to a Hammer-Slammer from Hammerschmidt, leaving him stunned and unmoving on the concrete. The DuPonts then roll Mike into the ring and signal for the referee to start the match. (F) _________ vs. The Foreign Legion vs. The Walkabout Brothers NWM Tag-Team Championship The Foreign Legion were all over this from the beginning, double-teaming Walkabout Mike while his brother Mal was recovering from the pre-match brawl. We raised the question of whether the attack should have resulted in a DQ on commentary, but pointed out that the match hadn’t technically started and we were interested in seeing a winner here to get the belts around someone’s waist. As long as Hammerschmidt didn’t interfere now the match was in progress, it looked like referee Tyler Baker was going to let the attack slide. Fortunately Mike managed to hold his own against the Foreign Legion for nearly five minutes before Mal recovered and climbed up to the corner, hitting the ring like a house on fire the moment Mike tagged him in. Mal roared through both DuPonts in the space of a few seconds, laying them low with brutal powerslams and elbow drops. What had seemed like an easy victory for the Foreign Legion suddenly seemed completely unlikely, especially when the Walkabouts hit their spike piledriver combo. Then the DuPonts remembered how to operate as a team, neatly cutting the ring in two and working over Mike then Mal with a series of quick double-teams. They picked up the win after a long struggle by knocking Mal from the corner with a dropkick and double-teaming Walkabout Mike for the pinfall. The Foreign Legion become NMW’s first Tag-Team Champions. He cuts a promo against Merle O’Curle, telling the Celtic Crippler that victory and defeat are simply two sides of the same coin, and he doesn’t care which as long as he’s given an outlet for his pain. Raven: For I am the poet of violence, the bard of the broken bone. This paltry title is merely an excuse for battle, a token to keep the competitors coming. Both men fought their heart out, putting on a showcase that highlighted the kind of explosive action the Lucha-Britannia title is meant to be about. High risk moves were attempted early, with disastrous results for Raven as he was caught in the Celtic wreath and flubbing a shooting star press in the fifth minute. The champ spent the rest of the match wrestling a fall down, doing his best to hold Merle off, before scoring a pinfall with a springboard cross body to bring the match up to one pinfall apiece. The final three minutes were a tense stale-mate, with both men unloading everything they had, but neither could gain the advantage. Griffin and Adams were fluid together in the ring, reading one another like the professionals they were and running the match as a tense nail-biter that saw each man capable of winning. Adams wrestled a very crisp, English style that got the crowd cheering. Griffin meshed strong-style strikes with his submissions, wearing Adams down. The final minutes seemed like both men were trading submissions, with quick reversals and counters that had the crowd on their feet. Griffin picked up the win, but it was obvious to everyone that he’d been in a tougher fight than he’d expecting. Keith was given a standing ovation by the fans as he rolled out of the ring. Creative Meeting, Friday,Week 4, May 2007 "Talk to me about the main event," Tyler said. "We've got midcard belts for singles and the tag-teams, but the main event looks a little empty." Nick Adams and I exchanged a long glance. We'd been talking about this for a while now, planning out the introduction of the belts, and we knew the plan would probably work as long as Tyler could be convinced not to jump the gun. That was a big if. Nick nodded and I bit the bullet. "We're not launching a main event belt until Christmas," I said. To his credit, Tyler just blinked and slumped into his chair. He ran his fingers through greasy hair as he processed the news, then nodded. "Reasons?" he said. "Good ones." "We can't afford it, for one," Nick said. "Main event belts mean main event workers challenging for it, and we can't afford to build fueds leading towards the title *and* pay the champion and the challenger every show. Waiting until Christmas means we've got the fanbase ready to go." "That's a good reason," Tyler said. "It won't mean @#$ to the fanbase though." "We're building the prestige of the Lucha-Britannia title," I said. "It's a new concept and it needs some traction before it's overshadowed, otherwise it'll just seem like a gimmick to get the undercard over." Tyler sighed. "There's still nothing there that will satisfy the fans. Not unless we make the LB title the main event." "Do you really want to watch Landlord challenging for it?" Nick said. "I sure as hell don't. There's maybe two guys at the top of the card that could hit that kind of pace convincingly." "Then what are we doing with our main event?" I opened up my folder and slid a sheet of paper in front of him. A sheet of paper with seven names, each carefully annotated with our proposed plans for the wrestler. "We're running a chase for the championship," I said. "We'll announce the championship's debut in December; the delay comes because this champion - the Commenwealth Champion - will be the icon of the company. Unlike the Lucha-Britannia title or the tag-team title, it needs to go on the very best of the best. The wrestlers have four months to convince us that's who they are - the best bets will go in the main event of the next four cards- then we'll run matches between the top four contenders in October and November." Tyler looked at the list. "This is who you're intending to push?" I nodded. "There's only seven names. I thought eight was traditional for this kind of thing?" "It is," Nick said. "We're keeping three of the contender slots to our choice; the fourth will be the fans choice - they can vote for anyone on the roster at our October show; the winner of the vote will wrestle in the November main event and have a shot of advancing to the title match." Tyler bit his bottom lip and looked over the list. "You really think this'll work?" Nick and I exchanged glances. I shrugged. "We have no idea," I said. "But it's worth a try. And if it doesn't look like it'll work, we'll use the fan vote to put someone over as a heel..."
And I think the Foreign Legion are your jobbing team right now.
If we had deeper pockets, a lot of your logic would have been flawless. The Foreign Legion picked up the win based on two key aspects - they're currently the tag-team that works best as a tag-team, rather than two individual wrestlers, and they're part of a tag-team match only costs $250 total. Compare that to the cost of using both Walkabout Brothers ($525 for the pair) or the Force ($750), factor in that the Legion are the most consistent of the three teams, and you can see why they're getting the push :)
Wasn't sure how I would take to the 'Australian's' generated for this diary at first but you've done a good job of getting them over (in a diary sense) and making them feel a natural fit with the established cornellverse characters.
Thanks; I was a little nervous about inserting my own characters into the game. I think the thing that makes them work, for me, is largely the fact that they're relatively crap in the ring. I let the game build their stats based on the archetypes in the editor, which means that even our brightest prospects were only talented rookie super-juniors stat-wise (and even then, we only have one).
I'm editing some of them, but a lot of the Lucha-Britannia rules were built around the game in that respect. The in-game reason for leaving the ropes in play to use as leverage is that it makes the concept of getting two pinfalls in fifteen minutes seem a little more believable; the out-of-character reason was that I wanted it to work with TEW's own rules for Lucha. But there are clean finishes coming, especially now that the tournament is over and there's only one Lucha-B. match per show.
I thought I'd throw in a Draw between Rave and O'Curle (it pushes back their blow off match, and allows O'Curle more time to "rub" off on Raven training wise.) Also... if you're not a big fan of Jed High (you could always use an angle where he goes back to his true name as their is picture in the file under that name).
And there I was thinking that I'd get away with both my swerve finishes without someone picking them :) As mentioned above, the problem with using Jed isn't the name (I'm nothing if I'm not a fan of stupid gimmicks) but his cost. He's the kind of worker I'd be pushing as a singles competitor if we were making a profit, but at the moment he's a special attraction - especially with UCR maintaining his overness for us while we aren't using him on shows. ___________________________ Coming Up Next Week at NMW South End Riot Nick Raven vs. Otto Hammerschmidt NMW Lucha-Britannia Championship The European Alliance made a statement at Tag-Team War, but it leaves Otto Hammerschmidt as the only member of the alliance that isn’t wearing gold. He seeks to rectify the problem by taking the Lucha-Britannia title from Nick Raven, who is fresh off a hard-fought defense against Merle O’Curle which ended in a draw with one pinfall apiece. The Foreign Legion vs. Pigeon Mask and Thunderbolt NMW Tag-Team Championship Pigeon Mask went looking for an ally after taking a beating at the hands of Larry Wood and his cronies, coming up with the heroic Thunderbolt who claims to fear nothing. They’ve spent the last month preparing to challenge Wood and his crony T.M.A, but Wood’s commitments in America have left the Masked Marvels without a target. The Foreign Legion stepped in to fill the gap, believing anyone forming a tag-team in NMW is only after one thing – their NMW Tag-Team Titles. Can the Masked Marvels walk away champions, or will the Foreign Legion shut down this high-flying duo before they gain momentum? Keith Adams vs. Merle O’Curle 30 minute Iron Man Match The plans for the Commonwealth Title has been announced and the NMW locker room has gotten the message: Every Match Counts. Keith Adams wants a shot at that title in December, but he’s picked up losses to Jack Griffiths and Barry Griffin in both his singles matches in NMW. At South End Riot he hopes to turn this around and prove his worth by defeating Griffin’s cohort in the Strong Style evolution that’s sweeping through NMW – Merle O’Curle. The Celtic Crippler is another man whose back is against the wall as we look towards the crowning of our first champion – while he’s had strong showings against Nick Raven and others in regular matches, he hasn’t yet gotten the job done when the title is on the line. He hopes that taking out Adams in this match will prove that he’s got what it takes to get a shot of headlining Decembers Supercard in the clash to crown the Commonwealth Champion. NMW South End Riot Pre-Show Nick and I came into the Paddington Club early to run through a couple of tryouts and watch the younger guys from Truncheon doing their thing. Aussie Battler had asked us to keep a particular eye on a guy named Danny Tasman who’d just finished training at the Australian academy. Tasman was a former boxer who had a killer strike, but ten minutes of watching him in the ring was enough to convince Nick Adam’s it wasn’t going to happen. “Look at him move,” Nick said. “He’s sloppy, he’s let his conditioning grow, and the only person whose more dangerous than him in the ring is that idiot Monolith. Christ, Jack, what the hell is Battler teaching these kids in Oz?” “Probably much the same thing you’re teaching TMA,” I said. “You passed him through training, didn’t you?” I was trying to make a joke, but Nick hadn’t caught it. He turned around and glared at me, looming over the wheelchair. “Chris has heart,” Nick said. His voice was low, the same guttural growl he used to use when he was threatening to take Red Dragon’s head off in 21CW. “That sack of #$%$ out there is just another arrogant #$%#$ who turned to wrestling because his boxing career didn’t pan out, and he got a job because Battler thought it was a good idea to have a recognizable name on the books. Tasman, Monolith, Runga – they all graduated for the same reasons – Battler still thinks he’s running an Australian promotion and scrambling for fans.” Nick shook his head and stormed off. I sat there, watching the ring, as Danny Tasman botched a basic shoulder block. I thought about my last meeting with Tyler, the look on the bosses face when he started talking about our spiraling profits. “We’re scrambling for fans too,” I said, to no-one in particular. But Nick was right; Tasman just wasn’t going to cut it. He may have been a name in Australia, but that was worth nothing here in the UK. Here he was just another dodgy wrestler with an attitude problem and we already had too many of them. But we were slowly reaching the point where we were going to need something; we were losing less money with the smaller shows, but the losses were still there.
As you've probably guess, Nick Tasman is another created Australian worker who was set to debut this month - a weak MMA crossover who has adequate striking skills and...well...that's about it. Hammerschmidt took a beating from the champion, but didn’t say die despite being hit with a stiff enziguri kick that left the entire crowd wincing as it echoed across the room. Raven grew frustrated at his inability to put Hammerschmidt away, but picked up the victory in the final seconds when he finally hit the Raven’s Wing. The rest of the match was just filler while the athletes attempted to catch their wind, the crowd refusing to buy into the attempt to disguise their lack of cardio conditioning as the result of a hard-fought battle between equals. The DuPonts did their traditional double-team spots, while Thunderbolt and Pigeon masked provided the high-flying action, but there was little to this match beyond that. Tonight’s match is all about coming back for more – it’s not about who can win fastest, it’s about who can last the longest. It’s not about quick victories, it’s about who can get the most victories. Merle O’Curle may be the Celtic Crippler. He may be the protégé of Barry Griffin and his Strong Style Revolution. But he isn’t good enough to step into the ring with me and win, over and over again. Merle is just a machine, regardless of what you ask him to do, so when we told him to keep pace with Adams and make him look good we ended up with something of a barnstormer. Both men went all-out for thirty straight minutes, hitting big moves and pulling off fast-paced technical exchanges with very little break between them. Keith Adams picked up the early advantage, but Merle evened the score not long after and the match went forward at one pinfall apiece for most of the final fifteen minutes. It was until Adam’s unveiled his new finisher, the Arrest Report (Double Underhook DDT), that the third and final pinfall was counted. The final minutes of the match were fast-paced, with Merle trying to chase down another pin to even the match, but Adams held him off and picked up the victory. Coming Up in June: NMW For Queen and Country Deejay Winks vs. Otto Hammerschmidt Aussie Battler is an Australian wrestling legend and head trainer at Truncheon Wrestling School’s antipodean sister-school. He’s taken offense to the comments made by Otto Hammerschmidt about European superiority and challenged the leader of the European Alliance to square off against one of Battler’s prize students – the high-flying Deejay Winks. Hammerschmidt has laughed off the threat, calling this match a showcase for his superior German efficiency. Pigeon Mask and Thunderbolt versus Larry Wood and The Minor Annoyance The issue between Pigeon Mask and Larry Wood gets even hotter this month, when the two wrestlers and their allies clash in a number one contender’s match to determine who gets a shot at the NMW Tag-Team Champions at Hardcore Showdown in August. Pierre DuPont versus Toby Juan Kenobi The two-time UCR Tag-Team champion makes his return to NMW and he’s planning on taking out his frustrations at being excluded from the tournament to crown the first NMW Tag-team Champions by decimating the man who scored the winning pinfall in the tournament. Pierre DuPont doesn’t plan on going down without a fight. While the DuPonts have looked great in tag-team competition since winning the belt, the question remains: can Pierre stand up to a wrestler of Kenobi’s caliber without his brother Jacques and Otto Hammerschmidt to back him up? Jack Griffith versus The Landlord Jack Griffith claims to be the Old School Icon and he intends to prove it by defeating a man who represents “everything that’s wrong with wrestling today.” Griffith has called the Landlord out as a man who relies on his ability to bleed to get over with the fans, claiming that there is no chance of the Landlord picking up a victory in a regular wrestling match. The Landlord has responded with a simple statement – those that challenge the Landlord in his own house are asking to get evicted.
Otto Hammerschmidt (Bring in Klose to tag with him)
Sadly, Wolfgang Klose refuses to wrestle anywhere but Germany. But I am keeping an eye out for another German who can work with Hammerschmidt in the hopes of running a particular (and somewhat obvious) angle in the distant future.

Deejay Winks vs. Otto Hammerschmidt Only because i feel this is a good spot for Otto to underestimate a "rookie". But i'm impressed, you've made Otto watchable. Pigeon Mask and Thunderbolt vs. Larry Wood and The Minor Annoyance I'm basing this off of what i believe the teams might cost to appear and the necessity of you having to push some cheap challengers to the legion. Pierre DuPont vs. Toby Juan Kenobi TJK (i use him as Christopher Lister) as he's cheap and a better wrestler than Pierre. Jack Griffith vs. The Landlord I so badly want to pick the Landlord... but the previous posters correct... Jack needs the push if you're going to have a legit Champion.

News from NMW.com The Road to the Commonwealth Championship The big buzz from New Millinium Wrestling over the last couple of months has been the announcement of the first Commonwealth Championship match since the final show of the Australian Wrestling Alliance back in 2004. This belt has been on hiatus for over three years, but it will now come back at December's Clash of Champions event. NMW has officially announced the top-five rankings that will be used to determine who will have a shot at the Commonwealth Champion at the December show. This announcement is intended to serve as a guideline for the locker room, letting them know who they have to defeat in order to claim a spot in the championship, but will also have important implications when Road to the Commonwealth Championship begins in October. Current Contender's Rankings 1: Barry Griffin The leader fo the Strong Style revolution has been dominating the main event since NMW's first show, picking up victories over Ralph Runga, The Landlord, Keith Adams and the Ultimate Phoenix without suffering a loss. 2. Jack Griffith The Icon of Old School hasn't been as active as Griffin, but his winning streak is no less impressive. He's dominated Ralph Runga on two occasion and had solid matches with 'Copper' Keith Adams. While many in the booking commitie would prefer not to have Griffith in contension for the title, it's impossible to ignore the quality of his work over the last six months. 3. The Landlord The Landlord came to NMW to dominate, impressing fans with his tenacity and brawling ability. While he's had tag victories over the Walkabouts and a singles victory over Lucha-Britannia champion Nick RAven, the Landlord is still chasing the elusive win that will cement his place among the top-five contenders and silence dissenters who decry his lack of technical ability. 4. "Copper" Keith Adams Keith Adams had a shaky start in NMW, losing matches to Jack Griffith and Barry Griffin while picking up a single win in tag-team competition with the Walkabouts at Rule Britannia. It was last months win against Merle O'Curle in a grueling 30 minute iron-man match that shot him into contention as he impressed NMW staff with his talent and workrate. 5. Merle O'Curle The number 5 spot is in hot contention, with Nick Raven amd the returning Toby Juan Kenobi nipping at O'Curle's heels. The booking team awarded Merle this spot based upon his recent performances with Adams and Raven - he may lack the victories of other contenders, but he's often involved in the best matches on the card. October: Night of Carnage The Main Event of this card will be the first Commonwealth Championship Qualifier Match, pitting the number one and number two seed in the top-five rankings against one another. The loser will have to hope that they've impressed the fans enough to earn their votes leading into the People's Choice Contender poll. Following the October show the People's Choice Contender ballot will be opened at NMW.com.
Good luck getting an hour out of the Lanlord (if i'm reading the format correctly). I'm really starting to get into this diary. Keep up the good work.
He still has to hold his place in the bottom for another three months in order to land in the Iron Man Match. Everyone in the top five rankings needs to fight to hold their place, since it wont be finalized until the Road to the Championship starts in September. The list will get updated after every show based on the performance of those involved, and you can be sure that people will be issuing challenges to those in the top-five rankings in an effort to claim their spots. If Landlord picks up the win over Griffith at the next show, it's a safe bet he'd jump to number 2 on the list. If he picks up a loss, he may get bounced down to the number 4 or 5 position.

Tuesday, Week 2, July 2007 It was seven thirty and Jack Griffiths was already a half-hour late. We were three days out from Queen and Country and he’d rung through to the offices in order to drop a bombshell. “Sykes,” he said, “I’ve had some news, and I wanted to let you know.” That had been two days ago. We’d organized a meeting tonight so he could let me know exactly how bad the bad news was going to be. It was officially half-an-hour after he’d said he’d meet me and I was twitching, fiddling with the teacup on the table, checking my watch and phone every couple of minutes. “You look like hell, Sykes,” Jack said, hand clapping down on my back. I jumped and he grinned at me. “Anyone would think you were waiting for me to sign your death warrant or something.” He had a big grin on his face, but that was to be expected if he was going to deliver the news I expected him to deliver. “Did they do it?” I said. “Did DAVE sign off on the offer?” “Yeah,” Jack said. “They did. You’re looking at the latest extremist on the roster.” I wilted. I couldn’t help it. It was good news for Jack. Great news, actually. He deserved to be wrestling for a big company like DAVE, not some little indy fed in the UK, but it was a blow none-the-less. I was just starting to think we’d hold onto him for a little while longer – that’s why he was part of the title contention. Now I had to start thinking about back-ups. “So when do you leave?” I said. I crossed my fingers and hoped we’d at least get a chance to round off his time with NMW at the next show. “I don’t,” Jack said. It didn’t sink in immediately – I was already nodding my head and thinking about who would take Griffith’s place among the title contenders. “Sykes, I said I’m not leaving.” I blinked. “They’re not running TV shows at the moment,” Jack said. “That means no written contracts, just per appearance deals. They offered enough that I can split my time between here and the US.” I blinked again. Then I let out a long, slow breath that I hadn’t realized I was holding. “Let me buy you a coffee,” I said. “It isn’t great, but it’s drinkable. We can talk about what’s going to happen at Queen and Country…” NMW News from UKWrestingObserver.Com There are rumors that New Millennium Wrestling have been in negotiations with several main event stars from Ring of Fire and Men of Steel Combat this week, possibly in an attempt to replace the draw card that is Jack Griffiths (rumored to be heading to Danger and Violence Extreme next month). No news yet of which wrestlers have signed with Tyler Baker’s pet-project, but we’ve received confirmation that there will be at least one new debut occurring some time before the Commonwealth Champion is crowned.

NMW: For Queen and Country Pre-Show It was still eight hours until the doors opened and the Paddington Club was already a small hive of activity. Road crew and students were putting up the ring, Nick was running a couple of the students through the psychology of putting on a match, and there were seven or eight people gathered together to watch the Truncheon Wrestling Showcase. This wasn’t much – just a chance to let the trainees strut their stuff in front of friends and family – but it had a good feel and ensured that many of those friends and family stayed for the show that night. I was looking forward to this show. It seemed like the talent was starting to get some momentum with the fans, the first round of graduates were, with the exception of Monolith, starting to find their feet as wrestlers, and the Commonwealth Championship was starting to get a little buzz generating on the internet. All in all, things were good. Then I sat back in the clubs and called up the latest Manheim’s Voice, one of the UK’s most listened-too podcasts about wrestling, and heard the familiar Kiwi accent of Ralph Runga getting interviewed. They ran through the expected spots: his football career, blowing out his knee, what made him get into wrestling. Then Manny hit the big question - Let’s talk about the company that brought you to the UK, New Millennium Wrestling. “Yeah,” Runga said. “Let’s talk about them. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful to everything Jack Sykes and Tyler Black have done getting that company up and running. They paid for my ticket, organized my training, even found me a place to stay and a part-time job to cover my rent. But here’s the thing – I should be on top of the card every week, and that’s a damn shoot. There are only one or two other guys on there that have my talent, my athleticism, and have the drawing power that my name has. Unfortunately, there’s no-one on the booking team that sees that. Every show I’m either not wrestling or jobbing to guys like Jack Griffith. Don’t get me wrong; I like Griffith a lot as a person. He’s just not a-list material anymore, you know? Too much drunk, too much water under the bridge; he’s a washed up name who’s winning because he once wrestled for SWF. As for the others: Griffin? Keith Adams? The Freakin’ Landlord? You know you’d rather see Runga than any of those, you know? I switched the ipod off and leaned back, suddenly glad that Runga wasn’t performing in the main show tonight. I saw the Minor Annoy…Chris Alnoy heading past. “Hey, Chris,” I said. He kept on walking. “Chris. Chris! Hey, Annoyance.” He spun around immediately, a silly grin on his face. “Yeah?” “Do you guys listen to Manheim’s show as part of your training with Nick?” Annoyance nodded. “Sure, Nick says it’s important to know what’s going on in the industry. And he’s a great interviewer.” “Does Nick listen to it?” “Sure, but he has to get Henry to do the downloading for him. You know Nick and computers.” “Then do me a favor,” I said. “Go find Henry and tell him I need to speak with him about editing the next download.” Annoyance grinned at me, showing off a mouth full of brown teeth. “You don’t want him to hear the interview with Runga?” I nodded. “Too late,” Annoyance said. He pointed over his shoulder to the corner of the club where Ralph Runga had just come in. He was busy chatting up some girl that was watching the student show, but Nick was already storming over with a head full of steam. “Damn,” I said. “Yeah,” Annoyance said. “Listen, Sykes, thanks for tonight. Putting me on the card and all.” I barely heard him. I was already rolling over to the far side of the club, trying to think of something that would keep Nick from murdering Runga… ____________________ NMW For Queen and Country Live at the Paddington Club Attendance: 89 people ____________________ Deejay Lee Winks hits the ring in his loose-fitting black pants. Winks is solid on the mic, even if he doesn’t have a profile within the company, so the crowd doesn’t heckle him too badly as he runs down Hammerschmidt's ability, the big gap between his firing by UCR and finding a spot in NMW, and that he needs to ally himself with two wrestlers who can actually, you know, wrestle in order to make an impact on the company. The crowd got behind the flashy kicks and flips that pepper Deejay’s matches, with the Australian ex-pats taking their cues from Aussie Battler as he urged the young Aussie in the ring towards victory. Otto makes some half-hearted offense, gets nailed by the 40 Winks (springboard roundhouse kick), but somehow gets the shoulder up when Deejay goes for the cover. Deejay looks shocked and starts peppering Hammerschmidt with punches; this proves to be his undoing. Otto manages to block one, nabbing Deejays arm with a judo-style twist, then hits a brutal Hammer-Slammer to pick up the victory. Wild Man Wood didn’t look pleased with his partner’s performance, particular when an exhausted Annoyance fell prey to the Flying Rat Splash, so he eventually ended the match by picking Annoyance up and hurling him at Thunderbolt in order to execute a thrown cross-body. Thunderbolt went down and Larry pinned him for the three-count and the victory. Larry Wood and The Minor Annoyance are the number one contenders for the NMW Tag-Team Championship. This match showed me why. Toby and Pierre put on a passable technical display, but they just couldn’t quite get the timing right. Reversals were botched, the initial ending was rewritten after DuPont accidentally slid his leg under the bottom rope, and the psychology was just all wrong. Kanobi picks up the victory with a Kanobi Kutter, but it says something that this was only marginally better than our opening match while containing two wrestlers with a much higher profile among the fan base. Result: Toby Juan Kanobi defeated Pierre DuPont in 15:48 by pinfall with a Kanobi Kutter. Rating: E+ ____________________ Toby barely has a chance to celebrate his victory before Otto Hammerschmidt rolls into the ring and attacks him from behind, laying Kanobi out with a big lariat to the back of the head. Pierre picks himself up and joins in the assault, laying in the boot, right up until Deejay Winks and Aussie Battler coming charging into the ring to make the save. Battler earns himself a Hammer Slammer for his troubles, leaving Deejay at the mercy of the European Alliance. Then the Landlord comes out into the ring, chair in hand. He clears house on the European Alliance and helps both Toby and Battler to their feet while Otto and Pierre slink backstage. (E-) ____________________ That’s when the Old-School Icon, Jack Griffith, walks through the curtain with a microphone of his own. He starts running down the Landlord, calling him nothing more than a hardcore brawler that wouldn’t know what to do if he didn’t have a chair in his hand, while Griffith is a master of the fundamentals that made wrestling what it should have been today. Griffith: Still, the Icon of Old School is a fair man, and I’m so much better than you that I don’t really need to hold any advantages. Actually, that’s not a great way of putting it, because The Landlord bleeds when you hit him a bunch of flowers. What I meant to say is that by the end of this match Jack Griffith had turned him into a gushing fountain of crimson fluid, and the hardest man in NMW was still fighting back and trying to pick up the victory. The match itself served a dual purpose – establishing Griffith’s credentials as a true tough guy among the casual fans and giving a nod to the marks who knew that Griffith was gearing up to do this kind of stuff regularly with DAVE. There were chairs, attempts to choke one another in the crowd, a big delayed vertical suplex onto the steel guard rail around the ring, and Jack picking up the victory with a Jack in the Box. News from NMW.com Top Five Rankings 1. Jack Griffith Victory over the Landlord in a match that favored his opponent has shown NMW officials another side of Griffiths and catapulted him to the top of the rankings despite reservations amongst the booking team regarding his attitude. There difference betweens Griffith’s position and Griffin’s is separated by the barest of margins, however, meaning both must put on good performances in order to hold their spot. 2. Barry Griffin He may not have performed on the last show, but Griffin retains his position in the NMW rankings by virtue of his excellent performances and a strong winning streak over a series of challenging opponents. 3. “Copper” Keith Adams The Landlord’s defeat at For Queen and Country sees Keith Adams move up a spot in the rankings, with many arguing he should be higher. Adams has consistently been involved in NMW’s best matches this year, but he hasn’t yet strung together the sequence of victories that see Griffin and Griffith at the top of the rankings. 4. The Landlord Retains his position by virtue of an excellent showing at For Queen and Country, pushing Griffith to the limit despite losing the pinfall. Like Adams, the Landlord’s position among the rankings is tenuous; his victories in NMW have only ever come when facing mid-card wrestlers rather than the main-event quality opponents defeated by the upper tier. 5. Merle O’Curle Many thought O’Curle would lose his spot to the returning Toby Kanobi, but the Celtic Crippler has been the backbone of NMW for much of the year and holds more victories than anyone on the roster. Backstage News NMW officials are reportedly furious about the brawl that broke out at For Queen and Country, issueing all those involved with the choice between steep fines or a one-month suspensions. Toby Juan Kanobi, Deejay Lee Winks and Pierre DuPont have elected to take suspensions rather than pay their fines, but both The Landlord and Otto Hammerschmidt have elected to pay the fine in an effort to impress officials prior to the finalization of the Top Five Contenders before September's Hearts of Iron. Coming up at NMW Born to Rumble Born to rumble is the last chance to earn a spot in the top-five rankings, so there have been challenges aplenty made to the current contenders by wrestlers seeking to impress the NMW officials. Nick Raven vs. Stardust Lucha-Britannia Championship Stardust makes his return to the NMW ring with a challenge against Lucha-Britannia Champion Nick Raven. Raven tried to duck this match, planning on making a challenge against number 5 seed Merle O’Curle in order to claim a spot in the top-five rankings, but NMW officials have determined that he must defend his own title before challenging for a second. Merle O’Curle vs. The Landlord The Landlord has slipped down the top-five rankings after his loss last month, but Merle O’Curle is determined to eliminate him from the chase for the Commonwealth Championship altogether while consolidating his own position. This match promises to consolidate the position of one of these men within the four-month chase for the title, so you can be sure that both writers will be laying it all on the line. Keith Adams vs. Otto Hammerschmidt vs. Barry Griffin Elimination Match The leader of the European Alliance has targeted Keith Adams and Barry Griffin in the hopes of earning a ranking spot, setting up a heated competition that ensures that both men’s positions in the top 5 will be altered. A victory or elimination for any participant is guaranteed to have dramatic repercussions. Petey Barnes vs. Jack Griffith The debuting Petey Barnes wants a shot at the title and beating Griffith is the only chance he’ll get to make a splash before the top-five rankings are finalized. Griffith is determined to retain his spot at the top of the rankings and avoid taking part in the Iron Man three-way, but needs a victory over Barnes to ensure that happens. Nick Raven vs. Stardust Nick Adams?! I'm sure you mean Nick Raven. Either way Stardust isn't winning this match Merle O'Curle vs. The Landlord I see your plan being to bump The Landlord out of the Top 5 rankings. Not really good enough for the Top 2 and he'll be a liability in the Iron Man match. Keith Adams vs. Otto Hammerschmidt vs. Barry Griffin Griffin maintains his spot in the Top 2 with a win in this 3-way. Petey Barnes vs. Jack Griffith Another win for Griffith as he maintains his place at the top of the rankings. * Another error you might want to correct, in your preview your mistakingly referred to Petey Barnes as one time X-Division star turned TNA jobber Petey Williams.

NMW Born to Rumble Live at the Paddington Club Attendance: 87 People _____________ The X-Factor Albino, Pete Barnes, starts the show off by telling everyone how he’s always being held back. 21st Century Wrestling didn’t hire him, despite the fact that he was half of the best English tag-team ever. Ring of Fire doesn’t push him, despite the fact that he’s one of the better wrestlers on the roster. His old partner, Adam Matravers, doesn’t even return his calls these days because Mr. “I’m big in Japan, man,” doesn’t think it’s worth working in the UK or working as a tag-team anymore. The crowd cheers every pronouncement because, lets face it, the eighty-strong NMW crowd is happy to cheer anyone that runs down Nova and his company. Barnes: But here, in New Millennium Wrestling, I’m being given a shot. In December they’re announcing the new Commonwealth Champion and Petey Barnes has been given his chance to earn a spot in the chase. And that announcement is Jack Griffith’s cue. The Icon of Old School struts out into the ring, all casual-like, then rolls under the bottom rope and smirks at Barnes for a couple of seconds. Barnes gets up in Jack’s face, but Jack just uses it as an excuse to claim the microphone and run a rant on his own. Griffith: I don’t know what power-trip you’re on, kid, but you aren’t earning nothing tonight. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m at the top of the top five. Number one. That doesn’t just mean that I’m the number one contender, it means I’m the hot favorite to be taking that title home. No-one has beaten me since I walked into this company; no-one will beat me before I walk out. If you really think one match with me is going to shoot you into the rankings- Barnes snatches the microphone back. It’s his turn to give Griffith a gloating smile. Barnes: One match, no. Trust me, Jack, I know better than that. I came in here tonight knowing that I have one shot. I came in knowing that you’ve never been beaten. But here’s the thing – I came here tonight ready to earn the shot I want. I don’t just have to beat you tonight, I have to prove in one match that I’m better than you in every…goddam…way. The crowd pops for that one. Griffith keeps smirking. Barnes: So I will. You and me, we’re going two-out-of-three falls tonight. I’m going to beat you down two times straight and prove to everyone…everyone…that I’m deserving of a spot in the top five. Barnes hands Griffith the microphone and rolls out of the ring. Griffith just stands there, staring at the younger wrestler as he leaves, the microphone hanging limp in his hand. The two put on a great match, with Stardust earning the crowds cheers when he became the first person to gain the early pinfall against Raven since the title’s conception. Raven fought from behind for the rest of the match, putting everything he had into his offense, until he hit a Raven’s Wing and evened the score at a pinfall apiece at the seven minute mark. The crowd may not know whether to cheer Raven or not, but they sure as hell understood the fighting comeback and desperation to retain the title. The champ tried everything to make the final pinfall, unleashing everything in his arsenal, but nothing seemed to matter. Raven grew more and more frustrated, resorting to strikes up against the ropes to try and wear Stardust down, but even that didn’t seem to do the job. Stardust fought Raven off, knocked him silly with a superkick, and went to the top rope to finish the job with a Shooting Star. And that’s when Raven’s girlfriend, Ellen Bathory, got involved. She bumped the ropes, knocking Stardust off balance, while Raven was still recovering. Stardust tried to recover, but Raven came-to first and leapt up onto the top ropes to hit a second Raven’s Wing for the victory. He celebrated with the title, unaware that Bathory’s interference had earned him the win, while Stardust peeled himself off the mat and glared at Bathory. Result: Nick Raven defeated Stardust in 11:48 by two falls to one after losing the first, with the final fall happening by pinfall when Ellen Bathory interfered. Rating: D- _____________ Otto Hammerschmidt cuts an interview hyping the three-way, telling the audience that it was criminal that the European Alliance had been overlooked in the rankings thus far when it was obvious to everyone that European superiority was going to bring home all the gold. Hammerschmidt: And tonight the officials have tried to hinder us, refusing to allow the DuPonts to compete, but this means nothing to us. Nothing. Otto Hammerschmidt fights his own battles and wins his own gold. The DuPonts absence simply means they hold their titles for one more week. Soon we will taste victory and all the gold will be within our grasp (E-). _____________ vs. Merle O'Curle vs. The Landlord Everyone knew what this match was trying to do, but it’s a credit to both Merle and The Landlord that they were capable of making it twelve minutes of nail-biting action before the expected result came through. The match kept moving in and out of the ring, letting each wrestler dominate in their natural environment. Merle had the Landlord dead to rights whenever they were within the squared circle, but the ringside brawl saw the Landlord inflict horrendous damage on the Celtic Crippler. The high-point of the match was the Landlord busting Merle open with a stiff shot to the head halfway through the match, then following it up with a series of chair-shots and punches that opened the wound even wider. Merle kept his composure even as blood streamed down his face, dropping the Landlord onto a chair with a DDT before rolling him back into the ring. For the last few minutes it seemed like the Landlord had the match won. He had Merle in the corner, smashing him in the face with a series of elbow shots, then took a few steps back to set up a running elbow blow. Merle was groggy and barely conscious, but still had enough presence to duck the running elbow and drag the stunned Landlord into the centre of the ring and lock in the Celtic wreath. The Landlord endured the hold for nearly forty seconds, clawing his way towards the ropes, before tapping. Merle staggers to his feet, refusing to show any expression, and limps towards the ropes. He’s halfway out of the ring when Nick Raven and Ellen Bathory emerge from the backstage area carrying chairs. Raven strides up to Merle, all black trenchcoat and emo-hair, stares at the bloody mess of his rival’s face, then caves it in with a chairshot. Ellen Bathory joins in the assault and the pair of them beat O’Curle into a pulp as he’s draped over the middle rope. Merle has only just slumped to the floor when Barry Griffin comes running out of the backstage area to make the save. Bathory and Raven scarper, fleeing through the crowd with bloodied chairs in hand, while Griffin helps Merle to his feet and assists his cohort backstage. Result: Merle O'Curle defeated The Landlord in 11:43 by submission with a Celtic Wreath. Rating: Match D, Attack E- _____________ vs. vs. Keith Adams vs. Otto Hammerschmidt vs. Barry Griffin Elimination Rules There were no real surprises in this match, but there was a hell of a lot of fine wrestling. Adams and Griffin focused on one another from the outset, giving Otto the chance to get in some lucky shots and take control of the pace. The German veteran is starting to see a return to his old form, remembering to work the match and hitting some impressive submission moves that haven’t been a part of his offense for years. Unfortunately it still wasn’t enough to keep him in the match and he was eliminated at the half-way mark when Keith Adams hit the Arrest Report. There was a momentary lull as Adams and Griffin squared off to finish the match, staring one another down before coming in and starting the second half with a knuckle-lock. Griffin managed to bend Adams backwards, almost pinning his shoulder to the mat, before Adams reversed the hold and locked Griffin up in a headlock. The exchange of counters progressed as they fought their way back to a vertical base and started trading blows instead, ending up in a series of elbow shots in the centre of the ring that left both men staggered. Keith Adams started to gain the upper hand as the match progressed, drawing comments from the commentary team about his cardio conditioning and ability to maintain a higher pace. Griffin was starting to slow a little, but his slaps and kicks still had the same snap and power behind him even at the conclusion when he laid Adams low with an thrust kick to the jaw and finished him off with a powerbomb deathlock. Result: Barry Griffin defeated Keith Adams and Otto Hammerschmidt in 15:57; the order of elimination was Otto Hammerschmidt first, and finally Keith Adams. Rating: D- _____________ vs. Pete Barnes vs. Jack Griffith Two out of Three Falls Pete Barnes drops the Y from his name and turns in the singles performance of his career, matching Jack Griffith move for move from the very beginning of the match. The two trade shots and hold for a while, but it isn’t long before Griffith is falling back on his power game and brawling while Barnes took to the air and hit some fast-paced offense. The pair battled for fifteen minutes without a pinfall, but Barnes picked up the first with a spectacular flying leg-lariat that was followed up with a standing moonsault. Griffith tried to break free, pulling his shoulder up a split second after Tyler Baker announced the first pinfall. Griffith was incensed, getting ready to slug Baker, but Barnes refused to be ignored. He hit the distracted Griffith with a dropkick and it was on again. Barnes seemed to fight with a new confidence now that he had the first pin, even though Griffith started fighting dirty and making use of eye-rakes and low blows to break holds and pin attempts. Momentum finally started to shift Griffith’s way minute by minute, until Barnes hit the X-Factor (spinning head scissors that floated into a crossface) to make the Old School Icon tap out and pick up the victory. Barnes rolled out of the ring and celebrated all the way to the back, while Griffith looked stunned that he’d lost the match and the crowd roared their appreciation for the best match we’ve ever seen in NMW. Result: Pete Barnes defeated Jack Griffith in 19:58 by two straight falls, with the final fall happening by submission with an X-Factor. Rating: C- _____________ Overall Show Rating: D
