Title Belt Render Advice

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I've been attempting to create title belts. Some of you might have seen my attempts at this. What I'm looking for is some advice, tips or even constructive critisism(sp). I don't think I'll ever get to the level say Payne is at or some of the other belt designers on these forums, but I enjoy trying and want to know what all of you think. Here are a few that I've attempted:

Okay, my advice (here I am helping the competition, lol). First and foremost, (and I did this, too) Belts are not a bevelled black. You have to make yourself a textured belt and lighten it. What I did, was take a picture of an actual belt, then copied a section of it, repeated it until I got the length I like, then textured it with a bit more noise. Then I lightened it so it's a grey colour. Next, you need a gradient overlay on the metal parts. After you are done the design to your liking, merge the layers (not the leather) then add a dark grey, light grey, dark grey Gradient Overlay, with a Hard Light layer property. That will help you a lot.

Hmmm... are you creating each layer seperately, then placing them all together? Another thing, why grey for the belt itself? My thinking is that most titles that I've seen are black belts. Just curiuos. I'll try your advice and see what happens. Thanks for sharing the "secrets" :D

The reason I choose a grey tone is so that the texture can come through. True, most belts are black, but they are shiny, and you can see the texture of the leather. Check my video tutorial in my belts thread. Yes, I create each item on a separate layer.

Great tutorial by the way with the video. I followed your video and it definately helped. I get a brighter light when I do the gradient overlay and have to either use a soft light or take down the opacity to almost 50 percent. I also noticed that I use Photoshop CS and not CS3 so there are a few things that I'm unable to do. But overall, I can definately see the difference in my belts. Thanks again for your advice and the video tutorial. Here is my latest attempt after watching your video.
Actually, can you do me a favour? Can you give me the Hex code for the colour you used for the UWA title? As I am sure I have said a million times, I am colourblind, but I really like that gold.
Here you go. A68958
