Stories/Awards
The Five Biggest Stories of 2008 5. EliteXC on CBS fails Even though Kimbo Slice was successful on the first EliteXC event entitled "Slice vs Gannon 2", the event was panned by critics who crucified CBS for taking the deal. Gannon had dominated the first round, but Kimbo won via TKO after pounding Gannon on the ground. Gannon popped back up after the fight was stopped, causing controversy. The second show was co-promoted with Strikeforce was the much-anticipated rematch between Frank Shamrock and Tito Ortiz. Shamrock was coasting to a decision victory when Ortiz caught Shamrock with a surprise head kick that floored Shamrock. Ortiz pounded Shamrock's face into hamburger meat, and the fight was stopped. Antonio “Junior” Silva was upset by Eric Pele after Pele drove his knee into Silva’s skull about 15 times before the fight was stopped. The third event saw Kimbo Slice face Bob "The Beast" Sapp. Sapp had dominated the first round, nailing Slice with various punches and kicks. At the beginning of the second, Sapp charged Kimbo, and was caught with a big overhand left that KO'ed Sapp. The fourth event saw Slice face Paul Buentello, in a much-anticipated match that saw both men get into a fight at the weigh-in. "The Headhunter" finally put an end to Kimbo with a vicious head kick in the third round. The events didn't do well in the ratings and CBS refused to renew the contract. 4. The Rise of Strikeforce At the beginning of 2008, there was no clear-cut number two promotion to compete with the UFC. Strikeforce got into the national spotlight with a television deal with ESPN, and broke away from EliteXC. The company also signed big-name free agents: Tito Ortiz, Matt Lindland, Semmy Schilt, Sergei Kharitonov, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Mark Hunt, and Dennis Kang. With EliteXC failing on CBS, Strikeforce rose to the occasion and became true competition to the UFC. Strikeforce also made a deal with DREAMS to bring top-level talent to America. 3. The Return of Kevin Randleman In 2007, Kevin Randleman suffured a staph infection so bad, htat it could've killed him if not treated. Add in a steriod suspension, DUI, and no real offer from any organization. Randleman came back with a vengeance in 2008, going 4-0 with victories over Kazuyuki Fujita, Jeff Monson, James Thompson, and Aleksander Emelianenko. Under the training of Randy Couture, "The Monster" showed improved striking, submissions, and submission defense. Randleman ended the year by signing a new contract with the UFC and is on a collision course with Brock Lesnar, who destroyed Mark Coleman. 2. Gary Shaw Leaves EliteXC Dana White was the one who got the last laugh in the end as Gary Shaw, the former boxing promoter failed in the world of MMA. Shaw proved that he was always a boxing promoter at heart, and went back to boxing with EliteXC's biggest star: Kimbo Slice. ProElite Inc., who owns EliteXC should've seen it coming, when Shaw talked about how Kimbo could be a top 10 heavyweight boxer. With the biggest star for the company gone, EliteXC kept on going, but it ran out of steam. Even with the much-anticipated rematch between Nick Diaz and Takanori Gomi, the numbers for the event were pretty bad. Without Slice, EliteXC lost most of it’s viewers and is on the verge of being dropped by Showtime. 1.The Last Emperor Vs Captain America January 24th 2009: The match every fan has wanted to see will finally happen. After months of negotiations, Randy "The Natural" Couture Vs Fedor Emelianenko to see who is the best fighter in the world. Both men fought and lost to the current UFC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nougeira. Randy lost a close decision to unify the titles at UFC 86, and Fedor was submitted via RNC at UFC 89. Randy fought at UFC 89, defeating Eddie Sanchez via TKO (Strikes) and that's all that is needed to make the superfight.

Wrestling Observer MMA Awards Fighter of Year Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueria Who had a better year than Big Nog? You really can't name somebody else who defeated such big name. First it was Tim Slyvia at UFC 81 to win the Interim UFC Heavyweight Championship in a huge comeback victory. At UFC 86, Big Nog unified the two belts with a victory over Randy Couture in an epic battle. At UFC 89, Nogueria finally took out his longtime rival Fedor Emelianenko at UFC 89, to unify the UFC and PRIDE Heavyweight Championship. Nogueria cemented his place as one of the top fighters in the world today. Second Place: George St. Pierre Fight of The Year Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs Forrest Griffin: UFC 86 While Couture/Nogueria brought that epic battle feel, Rampage/Griffin was nothing short of a street fight. Neither man was interested in taking the fight to the ground, which resulted in a fight that blew Bonnar/Griffin away. Rampage cleary won the first three rounds, Forrest came back strong in the last to only fall short of his bid. In a moment of respect, both men embraced after the match, showing that tough guys are really softes, who could kill you with a flick of the wrist. Second Place: Randy Couture vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria, UFC 86
UFC 89 Card will be up in a while.
