MAW: 10 Simple Rules...

Recommended Posts

OOC: Not bad - since debuting he's signed with one of the regional feds and the signs are that he's being groomed for a push a little way down the line. *
TEW.com RCI preview It’s January, it’s the Rip Chord Invitational, it’s very nearly the highlight of my working year (after the Ed Henson tournament, anyway). MAW have come a long way in the last year, running over thirty shows and signing up the likes of Rich Money, Genghis Rahn and Mexican sensation El Heroe Mexicano. But of course, 2012 was Kirk Jameson’s year and the RCI will be the first true test of his headline potential as he takes the main event against the monstrous Rahn. Just for a change, I’ll pick my winners for the non-tournament matches first. The tag title match should be a great tag contest, as Team Honor and ABH are the strongest teams in the division. ABH had been beating everyone since their formation, and seem to have taken genuine pleasure in decimating The XX Factor – slightly uncomfortably, as MAW shouldn’t need that kind of cheap heat. Then again, maybe the MAW fans just aren’t into male/female matches, as Davis and Quine have been getting Stevie Grayson heat in recent weeks... Anyway, Team Honor were surprise winners of the belts, and it looks like it may have been something of a political move on the part of the bookers to give Black Eagle a warning before he got released. Since then, they’ve done well to defend the titles in some good matches, but ABH have the fantastic Haley Buck on their side, and while their offence looks wickedly painful, she may prove to be the difference when the bookers decide who comes out of the match as the tag divison’s standard bearers. Providence is defending his All Action title on the show as well. In a wonderfully creepy promo exclusive to the company’s website, he issued an open challenge not only for his opponent, but also the match type – and the company have confirmed that all MAW’s workers will be invited to submit their entry, along with their specialist match type, for inclusion in a random draw to take place during the course of the show. Providence’s opponent could be anyone – booked or unbooked on the show, or not even an acknowledged part of the MAW roster. Who knows? And more to the point, who can predict? And, of course, there’s the big one – the Heavyweight title clash between Genghis Rahn and Kirk Jameson. Would MAW really have gone to the trouble of writing a two year storyline for Jameson only to have him drop the belt at his first major show? And is Rahn with the company long-term, or just guesting to give the champ a momentum boost? My impression is that Jameson will retain, but it should be a good match. And so for the tournament: Brandon Smith, Donnie J, Kashmir Singh and Eddie Powell are the face entrants, while Firebird, Lord Geoffrey Windameer and Aaron Andrews are the heels. I think we can discount Andrews straight away. Scuttlebutt has him in the doghouse backstage – hence his demotion from main events – and he certainly doesn’t need a win in this tournament. Firebird is too over to benefit, and in any case is cooling down from the Fallen experiment, rather than heating up. Brandon Smith won’t work three matches in one night, as he’s just not popular enough. His ex-tag partner might be able to, but I don’t see him making the final. That’s who won’t win, so who’s in with a shout? Well, Sean Deeley is on a hot streak right now. He’s the Traditional champion, and some might say that after the way in which he won the belt, he could do with a convincing win. He certainly has to be considered. Eddie Powell is getting a push of sorts right now as well – certainly the bookers are making an effort to highlight him, even if he isn’t getting ‘promo’ time as such. Donnie J and Windameer face off in the first round, and I suspect that the winner of that one will be in the final as both are main eventers and over with the crowd. Both could also do with a win in the tournament as they’ve been entertaining but not focused in any one direction of late. Who wins that match pretty much decides who their opponent will be as well, so to my mind it’ll either be Powell/Windameer, in which case Powell will win, or Deeley/Donnie, in which case I think that Deeley will win. Of the two, I’ll go for a Deeley win. I’m never right, but I’ll never stop trying either. One of these days, just by random chance, I have to be right. Anyway, I’m writing this at a truck stop just outside Raleigh, and I need to find a wi-fi hot spot. After that, it’s time to take my seat for the eight annual Rip Chord Invitational! It would be a nice way to try and establish him, if that's what you're aiming for. But like everyone else seems to reckon, you're also trying to get a challenger for Kirk, which will have to be a heel like Deeley.

RCI: "Sensational" Kashmir Singh vs. Firebird Firebird might be cooling off but he won't be losing to a career mid-carder like Singh RCI: "Dogfight" Donnie J vs. Lord Geoffrey Windameer Could go either way but I see Donnie J edging this, as he seem him going up against Firebird in the next round. RCI: "Bulldozer" Brandon Smith vs. Sean Deeley Deeley's getting the more solid singles push right now RCI: Eddie Powell vs. Aaron Andrews I was considering picking Andrews, despite all was said in the preview of him not really needing this, what swings me more Powell's way is the fact that if Andrews does goes through, it set up a heel- heel semi final and I'm more sure on my other heel picks of Deely and Firebird. Team Honor (c) vs. Always Breakin' Hollywood – MAW Tag Team titles Team Honor's had a solid run but I see the titles changing hands. ??? vs. Providence (c) – MAW All Action title Unless ??? is someone really good, Providence retains. Kirk Jameson (c) vs. Genghis Rahn – MAW Heavyweight title Not convinced Rahn is for the long haul, so Jameson retains. Actually he retains regardless if Rahn is sticking around or not. If Rahn is sticking around, it'll be via DQ, if Rahn isn't then Jameson goes over clean. RDI Semi: Firebird vs Donnie J RDI Semi: Sean Deeley vs Eddie Powell RDI Finals: Donnie J vs Sean Deeley I definately see a heel winning this to set up another challenger for Jameson and for me Deeley's on more of an upswing than Firebird right now.

I want to say this, Starting today you've got a reader. It may take months for me to catch up, but after the Hugh De Aske promo in the Diary awards, I've got to take the time to read this. I know I could do a quick catch up, but that is never the same as full read through. so here's to some good times ahead.

OOC: Another shedload of predictions? Thanks everyone, but man, I feel guilty that the diary's been a bit flat recently. Trying to get past the 'C' hump on my shows is proving to be a problem, and I can't help but feel it's affecting the write-ups. Hopefully you're all enjoying them, anyway :) MAW presents: The Rip Chord Invitational Friday, 5th January 2013 RCI: Eddie Powell vs. Aaron Andrews Andrews seemed to view this match as a formality, as he slapped Powell several times in the early going, taunting the former disco stud and mocking him for his relatively poor record. However, he couldn’t manage to put Powell away, and to his evident disbelief, Powell kept chipping away at him. In desperation, Andrews went to the top rope, but Powell avoided the Crossbody attempt and with Andrews stunned after the crash landing, he scored with a Motion Censor to score the upset victory. Winner: Eddie Powell (C+) * RCI: "Sensational" Kashmir Singh vs. Firebird These two were familiar with each other from previous tag matches, but for a first singles match this was good, especially following the hot opener. The two men worked their differing styles well, as Firebird used his speed and aerial skills against the mostly grounded Singh, who in turn tried to keep the masked man on the mat. Ultimately, Firebird was able to break down Singh’s defences and score with the Firebird Splash to take the win. Winner: Firebird (C-) * RCI: "Bulldozer" Brandon Smith vs. Sean Deeley This was a very strong match that saw the experienced Deeley working well with the puro-influenced Smith. The two worked a mostly mat-based contest that went down well with the fans, and was one of Smith’s finest singles efforts. In the end, Deeley advanced from a close contest with a Front Choke Lock. Winner: Sean Deeley (C) * RCI: "Dogfight" Donnie J vs. Lord Geoffrey Windameer This was a damp squib of a contest, possibly partly resulting from the superior opening offerings. Nonetheless, a highly anticipated clash was greatly disappointing, being on a par with what I expected from the following match – not the preceding ones. In the end, Donnie scored with Death On Miami Beach. Winner: Donnie J (D) * Lenny Brown and Primus Allen were stood backstage, flanking the shorter, and much more primly dressed, Haley Buck. “My clients, as you are all well aware, are on the Hollywood hot list. After each show, they are taken by private jet to California for screen tests and the most glamorous parties. At the upcoming Oscars, after Jesus II: Wrath of Christ sweeps the boards, they are the only people pre-approved for Elton John’s after-show extravaganza. “My clients, then, are the main event. The brightest stars in the galaxy. Me? I’m a simple girl. I stay home, I do their taxes, I arrange for all the little inconveniences in life to be taken care of. You may consider me a ‘fixer’. And for that, I can assure you, I am paid very well indeed.” “Damn right. Twenty percent ain’t natural,” Lenny Brown growled, but Buck held up a hand. “If you think that I don’t give value for money, Mr. Brown, I’m sure that I can find someone who does.” Brown remained silent, and Buck smiled, saccharine sweetly. “Lovely. Now, Team Honor... You have something that will soon belong to my clients. It will be an... inconvenience for them to have to explain an extra ten pounds of gold in their luggage every time they go through customs, but no matter. That is a matter for me to address. Just as the correct strategy for defeating you is my responsibility. I have been tasked with finding that strategy, and believe me, I am very good at my job.” * Team Honor (c) vs. Always Breakin' Hollywood for the MAW Tag Team titles I left this one to Rip, who’s taken a real interest in recent weeks in the tag team scene. He guided the teams through a decent scrap, with the power and agility of the challengers being thwarted time and again by the champions’ technical excellent. But as the match went on, the thunderous impacts slowly began to wear away at Makutsi and Johnson, and in the end Allen and Brown drove Johnson into the mat with a Sunset Boulevard, allowing Allen to score the pin to take the titles. Winners: Always Breakin’ Hollywood (D+) * Genghis Rahn was shown backstage, in a darkened locker room. “The pretty boy with the belt. It’s a story I’ve seen a hundred times before. And it always ends the same way: The pretty boy down and out, and the big, ugly monster standing over him with the title in his hands. So it has always been, so it will be tonight. “Kirk Jameson, I don’t hate you. I don’t dislike you. I nothing you. You have no significance in my life, beyond the title belt around your waist. Once I take that, you can rest assured that your punishment will be at an end. Be sensible. Make it easy on yourself. Tonight will only be as difficult as you choose to make it.” * RCI Semi-Final: “Dogfight” Donnie J vs. Firebird Although not conclusive, this match certainly pointed a finger towards who was at fault between J and Windameer – but then, Firebird can make almost anyone look good. He did so here, with the match being a thrilling contest between the two aerialists that culminated with a second Death On Miami Beach from J to advance to the final. Winner: Donnie J (C+) * RCI Semi-Final: Eddie Powell vs. Sean Deeley This was another strong match, if not quite as good as the preceding match. The two fighters didn’t mesh quite as well, but still put a decent offering forward, highlighted by Haley Buck’s cajoling of Deeley and the referee whenever Powell had the advantage. Eventually, this put Powell off his stride as he turned to admonish her, allowing Deeley to clamp on a Front Choke Lock to take the win and advance to the final. Winner: Sean Deeley (C-) * Rip stood in the centre of the ring, a tombola beside him. “It’s time for the draw for the All Action title match!” He spun the tombola, and said: “We had over twenty challengers staking a claim to a shot against Providence tonight, and there was a wide array of matches proposed: Submission matches, ladder matches, strap matches, street fights... You name it, someone on our roster calls it their specialty. So, let’s see who’s dream – or nightmare, considering the opposition – gets to come true tonight.” Rip stopped spinning the drum, and drew a name from it. “Tonight, the All Action title will be defended in a ladder match... against Amazing Fire Fly!” * Amazing Fire Fly vs. Providence in a ladder match for the MAW All Action title This was a good match, exceeding our expectations, and involved a very impressive performance from Providence who largely carried the contest as Fly seemed badly off his game in patches, including flubbing a ‘simple’ spot where he was supposed to legdrop Providence from the top of the ladder. However, Providence was able to improvise enough in ring to help the masked man through the match, before pitching him from the top of the ladder to allow him to grab the title belt to retain. Winner: Providence (C-) * Donnie J and Sean Deeley faced off in the centre of the ring. “I’m glad it’s you I’m facing, Deeley,” Donnie said. “I’ve had two hard contests tonight. I thrive on that, so facing you makes this a good night for me.” “I applaud your competitive spirit,” Deeley responded. “But I believe you’re missing something: I am nothing like the others you have faced tonight. Do not make that mistake, for I am nothing less than the most complete wrestler in this promotion. You will certainly have a hard contest, as you put it, but this will not be a good night for you.” * RCI Final: “Dogfight” Donnie J vs. Sean Deeley The final was a strong contest fought between two men who had already given their utmost in two matches during the course of the evening. Donnie kept things moving at pace, while Deeley tried to hobble him with leglocks to slow him down. Haley was again a prominent presence at ringside, this time feigning innocence to the referee whenever he turned his attention to her – but continuing to barrack and insult Donnie whenever she had the chance. Donnie seemed to have learned from Eddie’s mistake, however, as he refused to be distracted by Deeley’s manager, making the match wholly a contest between the two workers. Ultimately, Donnie seemed to have the edge as he was able to strike seemingly at will, but Deeley rallied seemingly from nowhere, catching a tiring Donnie in the centre of the ring and applying the Front Choke Lock for the submission victory and title. Winner: Sean Deeley (C) * Kirk Jameson came down to the ring, his face set in an expression of fixed intent. “It’s going to be a long, hard night for me,” he said. “Genghis Rahn says so. He says that I could just hand him the title, and I thought about it...” The crowd booed. “...for a second.” The crowd cheered. Kirk smiled. “That’s not in my nature, though. I don’t walk away from fights. Not against my best friend, not against my worst enemy, not even against a man reputed by many to be one of the toughest ever to set foot in a ring. His record speaks for itself: A five-time Hardcore champion. A former International champion. A former World champion... and he was never beaten for it. “Rahn says that the harder I make this match for him, the more I’ll suffer. Well, I fought to win this title, and Genghis Rahn represents my biggest challenge so far. I don’t back down from challenges. I’m not going to be one of those champions who can’t keep hold of their title once they have it. I’m the ninth holder of this belt. As far as I’m concerned, I’m going to be the last, because I will not lose this title. Not to Genghis Rahn, not to Aaron Andrews, not even to Sean Deeley when he cashes in his title shot. “So Genghis, come on out. You want to make me suffer? I’ve suffered before. You want to make this a hard night for me? You won’t be the first. You think you can take this title from me? I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that doesn’t happen!” * Kirk Jameson (c) vs. Genghis Rahn for the MAW Heavyweight title This may have been booked to run a little long, but what can you do? At 42 years of age, Genghis isn’t really capable of twenty-plus minute all out tussles, but his name value will have added a lot to Kirk’s legitimacy as he took on the almighty Rahn with the title on the line. The match saw Jameson take a ferocious beating in the early going as he was just unable to even so much as make Rahn flinch. But little by little, Jameson’s perseverance paid off as he wore down the challenger by inches, his remarkable conditioning allowing him to mount a comeback that saw him unleash everything in his arsenal on the larger man, eventually scoring with The Bullseye from the top rope to wrap up the successful defence. Winner: Kirk Jameson (C) Overall: C- (I call shenanigans! Actually, Deeley was overused – but then, big things await him...) Next: Analysis
10/10 on predictions ! :D
Pfft. That Pagan guy gave most of it away anyway... Actually, one day I'll do an RCI preview that's spot on in its predictions. That'll throw you all... Anyway, my future self travelled back in time and logged on to my laptop. He dumped two months worth of shows on there, which I guess saves me writing them. That means it's double posts for the next couple of days to get caught up :p * Suffice to say, I was disappointed with the show. The general level of performance had been good, but fans had been less than pleased with the outcome of the tournament as Sean is popular enough, but not on the scale of an Andrews, Firebird, or even Powell. In addition to that, we’d peaked early, with our semi-final and final matches being good, but not up to the calibre of the opener or the Powell/Firebird semi-final. I’d expected the latter match to be good, but equally I’d expected the last two matches to be better. Never mind – the Invitational has always been about welcoming new guys to the main event anyway, and Deeley to my mind is now ready to go at the top of the card – with the right opponent. Genghis Rahn’s contract will not be extended. He did okay while he was here, but at nearly 3,000 per show, he’s just not worth keeping around for what he’s able to bring. * MAW True Love And High Adventure Amazing Fire Fly vs. Lord Geoffrey Windameer Spectrum Infinity vs. Ford & Speed The XX Factor vs. Always Breakin’ Hollywood (c) – MAW Tag Team titles Bradford Peverell vs. Providence “Bulldozer” Brandon Smith vs. Sean Deeley (c) – MAW Traditional title

OOC: So, yeah, those twice-daily updates, huh? :o I'll see if I can make up the difference tonight Welcome to mistaken, by the way. I must try and get back into the habit of commenting on people's comments. I do read every one, and they're all appreciated. And I'm still getting used to specifying title matches on the previews - but the next show does have a non-title match, and I've even marked it as one on the preview :p * Mid Atlantic Wrestling presents: True Love And High Adventure Monday, 8th January 2013 Bradford Peverell vs. Providence (c) in a Street Fight for the MAW All Action title We were live before a sold-out 1,000 capacity Asylum in the Great Lakes for the first time, and opening with a dud of a match that seems likely to cost us 200 fans on its own. In fairness, it could have been worse, but it was just so-so, which a Street Fight between two brawlers should never be. The main problem was a lack of chemistry, and while we’d suggested some spots, Providence was in charge of the flow of the match. That meant that when Peverell and he just couldn’t get on the same page, the match was disjointed and uneven – badly so, and the Eye Of Providence that gave the champion a successful defence was a welcome sight. Winner: Providence (D-) * Spectrum Infinity vs. Ford & Speed This following match was better than the opener, and given the relative popularity of the participants, well, it’s a poor show indeed. The match itself was entertaining enough, with Scarlet Strike playing face-in-peril, before Blue Shift fell to a Fallen Chances. Winner: Ford & Speed (D) * The XX Factor were backstage with Jenny. “Jaime, Thea, you’ve been chosen as the first challengers to Always Breakin’ Hollywood’s Tag Team titles. You’ve not been on the best of runs recently. Do you really believe that you can overturn the very impressive champions?” “Of course we do, Jenny,” Thea said. “If we didn’t, we wouldn’t be here, isn’t that right, Jaime?” Jaime was staring off into space, and Thea had to repeat her name to bring her around. “Oh, yeah, ABH,” Jaime said. “We can beat them, no doubt.” Her words didn’t match her tone, which was recognisably sarcastic. Thea looked at her in concern, but followed her as she stalked away from the interview area. * The XX Factor vs. Always Breakin’ Hollywood (c) for the MAW Tag Team titles As confident as the two women may have wanted to appear, stepping into the ring with the dominant duo of Lenny Brown and Primus Allen clearly perturbed them. Allen in particular seemed to take pleasure from their discomfort, and pitched them around the ring in the early going in a manner that was clearly designed more to disorient and unsettle then cause actual pain. At ringside, Haley Buck applauded this for a time, but quickly called for the champions to get serious – which Brown took to heart as he crushed Quine with The Star Treatment, before she was wiped out with a Sunset Boulevard to hand the champions their first defence. Winner: Always Breakin’ Hollywood (D-) * After the bell, Thea Davis entered the ring. She looked glum, but tried to cheer Jaime Quine up as she helped her to her feet. When Quine caught sight of her smile, however, her face reddened and she unloaded with a series of forearm strikes before a thrust kick took her partner out of the ring through the ropes. Quine quickly followed and pitched Davis into the steep ring steps before slamming her head into the announcers’ table and, before anyone had the chance to stop her, kicking her in the stomach and in one smooth motion piledriving her on the arena floor. Quine sneered down at her fallen partner before strutting away, ignoring the taunts of the crowd. * Amazing Fire Fly vs. Lord Geoffrey Windameer Unusually for a Fly match, this one didn’t see the masked luchadore going to the air too often. Instead, he tried to stay on the ground with Windameer, and this seemed to throw the aristocrat off his game. Having fallen to Fly in six-person action on a recent card, Windameer seemed determined to improve his record, but his overeagerness allowed him to fall prey to Fly’s unorthodox brawling, leading to a Sky High Fire Fly that gave the masked man another upset victory over the USPW World champion. Winner: Amazing Fire Fly (D-) * Sean Deeley came down to the ring, accompanied by Haley Buck. “My client has been dealt a grave injustice,” she intoned, as they stood in the centre of the ring. “Last Friday, he became the 2013 Rip Chord Invitational champion, in addition to being the reigning Traditional champion. He is a bonafide superstar... But where was the recognition? Where was the adulation? “I have been in discussions with Mr. Chord over the last several days,” she went on. Rip remained silent. “And we have agreed that the next several minutes of the show will be devoted to celebrating my client’s achievements.” A video played, showing highlights of the RCI carefully edited to make it look as though Deeley had steamrollered through his three opponents, barely breaking a sweat. Meanwhile, a flood of dancers burst from backstage, twirling batons and waving flags as a deluge of tickertape poured form the rafters. Among the dancers walked a veritable Adonis of a man, hooded and bearing the RCI trophy in front of him. He brought it into the ring as Deeley beamed at the festivities going on around him, before turning to take the trophy as the tickertape downpour began to thin out somewhat. But the trophy bearer refused to let it go. Deeley tugged, but the man tugged back, harder, and Deeley dropped the Traditional title as he stumbled forward. The man swept back his hood to reveal Brandon Smith underneath, and he snatched Haley Buck’s mic from her before she had the chance to react. “Shame on you, boy,” Smith said, glaring down at Deeley as scuttled across the ring to his belt – just avoiding the trophy as Brandon pitched it at him. “Coming out here and acting as though you’re somehow better than the people you fought. The luck of the draw counts, Deeley, and you know that. Any one of could have won that tournament. Heck, it wouldn’t have taken much for me to knock you out in the first round and take that title for myself. In fact...” He grinned. “...that sounds like an idea. You can keep your trophy, Sean. Ah want a shot at your Traditional title, and Ah want it tonight.” “That sounds like a plan to me,” Rip announced from ringside. “Miss Buck, I applaud your devotion to your client’s cause, and you’re quite right that I overlooked the awarding of the trophy at the last show.” Rip’s tone shifted from conversational to confrontational. “But you’ve had your moment, and now it’s back to business. And for the record, Miss Buck, if you ever call me at three in the morning again, it will be you in the match – not your client.” * “Bulldozer” Brandon Smith vs. Sean Deeley (c) for the MAW Traditional title A flat end to a flat show, as nothing we tried came off with any sparkle. Where these two had put forward a spirited offering at the RCI, this match just stumbled from bell to bell with the crowd not really getting into it at all. Smith showed off his power in spells, while Deeley countered by striking hard at the Bulldozer’s pressure points, eventually leaving him with one completely limp arm, and easy prey to a Front Choke Lock for a successful defence. Winner: Sean Deeley (D) Overall: D (Smith and Deeley aren’t ready to main event) Next: New champions in SWF and USPW...

Incidentally, a few people have speculated that Kirk's challengers should be heels. I've noticed that MAW fans seem to object to heel/heel matches, but that face/face matches don't seem to attract the same penalty. Odd, that, but it does open up my options for Kirk over the course of his reign...

I rarely find that face/face matches produce as good a grade as face/heel matches but they are definitely more well received than heel/heel matches.

OOC: I may just have been lucky - but the dark matches I've run as tests and the odd 'live' match seems to suggest that there's no penalty (or one so mild I haven't noticed). It's not something I plan to make a major part of Kirk's reign, but at the very least I want to see him and Donnie going at it... * Giant Redwood is the USPW Television champion. He toppled Masked Patriot (MAW’s Providence) who managed just one defence. I don’t get it. Redwood isn’t even that popular – why’s he been put over Patriot in such an idiotic way? * Troy Tornado is your new SWF World champion. He defeated Mario Heroic in a one-off match at When Hell Freezes Over. Although undeniably talented, Tornado has been wrestling sporadically for the SWF since joining a year ago, with just over twenty-five matches. He hasn’t really had any great run of form in that time either. There’s been some good matches, though, so we’ll have to see if he grows into the role. * MAW New Year, Old Rivalries Kirk Jameson and Thea Davis vs. Aaron Andrews and Jaime Quine The West Texas Peacekeepers vs. The Second Sons Quentin Queen vs. Sean Deeley – non-title "Sensational" Kashmir Singh vs. The Great Ota Bradford Peverell and Amazing Fire Fly vs. Always Breakin' Hollywood (c) – MAW Tag Team titles "Dogfight" Donnie J vs. Rudy Velasquez Eddie Powell vs. Firebird

Mid Atlantic Wrestling presents: New Year, Old Rivalries Friday, 12th January 2012 Aaron Andrews was in the ring before the crowd had even taken their seats, and it was clear that he had something to say: “Enough is enough! Genghis Rahn lost last week, and that leaves the way clear for me to use my rematch clause. Kirk Jameson, it’s been three months. Quit ducking my challenge!” Jameson emerged from the back, a grim smile on his face. “I’m not ‘ducking’ anything, Aaron,” he replied, calmly. “I’m just giving you a taste of your own medicine. You’ll get your rematch, when I want to give it to you... But not yet, Aaron. I’m sure Mr. Chord would agree that a match like that deserves better promotion than it would receive from just being thrown out there tonight.” Andrews glanced at Rip, who was nodding. “Fine, play your little games,” Aaron said. “You say that I was corrupted by that title, Kirk... Well, you’ll be no different. I can see that already.” Kirk shook his head, still smiling. “That’s where you’re wrong, Aaron. You see, I’m genuinely concerned that letting you have this title back would be a bad thing. You want to know when you get your rematch, Aaron? It’ll be when you’ve proven that this title won’t send you mad again. Striding out here, demanding to be treated differently from everyone else... That’s not how it works, Aaron. You’re no different to anyone else. Take your place in line, and I’ll get to you eventually. “However, if you want a match with me tonight, I have a suggestion.” “Name it.” “There’s a woman backstage who reminds me of you. Her name’s Jaime Quine. Now, as it happens, she turned on her partner at the last show, and beat her up. You can see where I see the resemblance.” Andrews scowled. “So what I’m proposing is that you can have a match with me tonight right now... with Jaime Quine as your partner and Thea Davis as mine.” “Deal!” Jaime Quine was first to emerge. She stalked past Jameson, ignoring him, and slid into the ring to stand beside Andrews. Taking his mic, she turned back to the ramp. “Let’s stop this before it even gets started,” she said, with a snarl. “Thea, I’m sure you want your revenge from the last show. I’m standing right here... with the best wrestler in the world as my partner. If you really think you can take me, let’s do this, right here, right now.” Davis emerged and stood by Kirk. “Jaime, there’s a big difference between me and you. You expected the world to roll over and give you what you wanted. When that didn’t happen, you gave up. That’s not how I do things, and that’s why I’m siding with Kirk... and why we’re going to beat you right now.” * Kirk Jameson and Thea Davis vs. Aaron Andrews and Jaime Quine This was... interesting. I've never before had a tag match where both teams suffered from bad chemistry. In fact, in five years prior to this match I'd only ever had three cases of bad team chemistry at all. I want these two women to have a hot rivalry, and putting them in a match with Andrews and Jameson was, therefore, a no-brainer – but there were effectively two singles matches being fought here, and the way the fans reacted to any combination that wasn’t Andrews/Jameson (including the spells where bad timing on tags forced the workers into mixed combat for a few exchanges) meant that, if anything, the heat for a Davis/Quine contest dropped as a result of the match. In the end, Quine dropped Davis with a KO Kick for the win. Winners: Andrews and Quine (D) * The West Texas Peacekeepers vs. The Second Sons I was expecting this to be a letdown, and normally it would have been a lot more noticeable. However, considering who was involved, this was a decent match. Perhaps a little below average for the tag division, but the Peacekeepers just aren't over. Despite that, the four men did a reasonable job putting on a spirited brawl, with Marshall Dillon making great play of dishing out a beating to Casey Valentine when the younger man tried to go toe to toe with him. In the end, Antonio fell to a Volcanic Repeater as the babyface team picked up a rare win. Winners: The West Texas Peacekeepers (D-) * Sean Deeley came down to the ring, without his Traditional title. “You may notice something missing. Nothing anyone can say will convince me that Quentin Queen is a worthy challenger for my Traditional title, and therefore I’m refusing to give him even the slightest chance that he might somehow take that belt from me. Queen, get out here and take your beating.” * Quentin Queen vs. Sean Deeley A straightforward win for Deeley, as Queen learns from one of the best (and also learns what might happen when he complains about not getting booked). Winner: Sean Deeley (D) * "Sensational" Kashmir Singh vs. The Great Ota I've noted that Rip and Rock really seem to sparkle when presented with a good match like this, as they can really get into the action. Our matches can be quite pedestrian at times (take matches two and three tonight, for example, where there was nothing very wrong or very right about any of them) which doesn't inspire Rip. For this match, however, they bounced off each other without missing a beat, even covering for Ota's unusual clumsiness on a couple of moves as he rolled to a victory via a Ninja Strike on Singh. Winner: The Great Ota (C-) * Always Breakin’ Hollywood cut a promo, promising that the makeshift pairing they were about to face had no chance of taking their titles away. * Bradford Peverell and Amazing Fire Fly vs. Always Breakin' Hollywood (c) for the MAW Tag Team titles An okay tag match. I'd hoped that Peverell and Fly might boost things a bit, but no such luck. It was mainly a brawl, with Fly and, to a lesser extent, Brown going to the air a bit, before Fly got flattened with a Sunset Boulevard. Winners: Always Breakin' Hollywood (D) * The lights dimmed before ABH had a chance to leave the ring. The screen over the entrance ramp flickered, before the silhouette of two men was shown on it. “It’s so quiet,” came one voice. “So calm. So still.” “It’s just not right,” said a second voice. “Not natural at all.” “We’re coming home.” “We’re coming for our titles.” “Lenny Brown, Primus Allen...” “...there’s a storm coming...” * Donnie J was walking backstage when he bumped into Rudy Velasquez. “Listen, Rudy, I just wanted to say that I know you’re not the most popular of people-“ “Like I care.” “-but that’s okay,” Donnie went on, ignoring the interruption. “You fight fair. I respect that. I know that tonight’s going to be a great fight, and a real challenge.” Velasquez’ eyes narrowed. “Listen, amigo, you think I care what you think of me? You think I care what kind of fight we have? You think I care how I win? Just because you haven’t seen me cheat, that don’t mean that I won’t, or that I don’t. I’ll do anything to get the win, and get me and mine more money.” * "Dogfight" Donnie J vs. Rudy Velasquez Velasquez and Ota may be loners, but they seemed to have caught the same bug as the usually steady Latino worker was half a step off the pace in this match. Donnie J stepped up his game to compensate, and his powerball ricochet performance looked great, and made the match work as he chipped away at Velasquez, striking from wide tangents and even going toe-to-toe with the street tough before scoring with a Death on Miami Beach for the win. Winner: Donnie J (C-) * Firebird stood in the centre of the ring, glaring at the crowd. “Another day, another challenger to my throne. Make no mistake, this Powell has some modicum of talent, but he is my inferior. And he seeks redemption, the escape from a life lived in jealousy and bitterness. He lacks my talent, and he lacks my understanding of the strength brought to us by the darkness. Tonight, perhaps, he will learn how much better, and how much stronger I am. But he will never be able to match my abilities.” * Eddie Powell vs. Firebird This contest was fought almost entirely in the air, as the two men exchanged aerial assaults in a manner more commonly seen in CZCW. But the crowd bought into the action, really enjoying the sight of the two men throwing themselves around the ring with abandon, trading high-flying attacks well above the mat in a manner that brought the Matrix to mind, and could scarcely have been further removed from what might be considered a typical MAW match. But our fans are connoisseurs of more than just submissions and bloody brawls, and when Powell scored with a Motion Censor to put Firebird down, they pronounced their acclaim as loudly as if he'd worn him down with an hour-long chain wrestling clinic. Winner: Eddie Powell (C) Overall: D+ (Bah. January's not been a great month for us...)
