East Coast Bias? - ECWA 1991

...
The year is 1990, soon to be 1991 and the media is abuzz about something large about to take place at a press conference held by Jim Kettner of East Coast Wrestling Association. Jim walks through the crowded media circus and steps in front of the podium. Jim Kettner Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for joining me here on this day of transition. As some of you know and some do not, I have been having some health issues here lately that have kept me from running ECWA to the best of my abilities. I began this company back in 1967 with a dream to keep wrestling here and to keep it affordable for the masses. That dream will now be continued as I have decided to sell my company to a gentleman who can continue to promote that dream. I present to you Mr. Jack Avatar. Jack? Another gentleman walks up to the podium and shakes hands with Jim Kettner. Jack Avatar Good afternoon everyone and thank you for being here. I will keep this brief because I have several duties that I need to attend to. I would like to thank Mr. Kettner for all of his service with ECWA and would like him to know that he always has a place here in this company if he so desires it which I am sure that he will. As far as the company goes, I will be living out Mr. Kettner's dream and promoting here on the east coast in places like Deleware, Virginia and the Carolinas and I will be bringing you hard-hitting wrestling action wherever we go. This leads me to my final bit. That is that for the month of January, the East Coast Wrestling Association will go dark. I will be working out some contract deals with certain superstars and within the month of February we will resume a weekly show and hold one major show a month. And I can promise you that ECWA will be better than ever. Thank you and have a good day. The reporters are stunned and look around at each other as Jack and Jim walk off side by side. What a good, steady ovation for this veteran! The Junkyard Dog mostly dominated the bout as you would expect him to but Andrews was definitely learning from one of the best. JYD dropped Andrews with one of his Junkyard Dog Headbutts and got the pinfall victory. Winner: Junkyard Dog by pinfall Match Rating: E Junkyard Dog celebrated inside the ring while the crowd watched in awe as someone jumped the guardrail! The large man stood in the corner, motioning for JYD to turn around! He raises the chair and SMASHES JYD in the head! AGAIN! AGAIN! JYD has been busted open! Rhino reached down and grabs some of the blood, smearing it on his chest before raising his arms to boos from the crowd! What a dispicable act!

vs. Tommy Dreamer vs. Chris Candido Tommy Dreamer is a bit of a crowd favorite here in Delaware and gets a good ovation as such and then out comes Chris Candido flanked by the lovely Tammy Lynn Sytch. Tammy stands in Candido's corner as Candido runs over and attacks Dreamer to start the match! Candido showed some good technical wrestling, keeping Dreamer off-balance in the early-goings of the match. He even tosses Dreamer out of the ring a time or two, letting Tammy get involved with well-timed kicks to the ribs of Tommy Dreamer. Tommy stages a comeback late in the bout, keeping Candido on the ropes with several near-falls until someone comes running from the back! Tammy Lynn jumps on the apron to distract the referee as this man jumps inside the ring! Tommy turns...SUPERKICK! And down he goes as the man takes off out of the ring and through the crowd. Candido pulls himself up and Dreamer as well, taking him to the top turnbuckle...THE BLONDE BOMBSHELL SUPER BOMB! The crowd begins a 'Holy ****' chant as Candido makes the cover: 1...2...3! Winner: Chris Candido Match Rating: E

vs. Jack Avatar vs. Taz Taz walks out first to the ring and grabs a microphone to address the crowd here. Taz: "Listen up all you idiots in the crowd. I've got something to say." Taz pauses, listening to the boos from the crowd. Taz: "Everywhere I go, whether it's the United States or Japan or the United Kingdom I hear people talking about some guy called Sabu. Everyone thinks he's such a tough guy. He's been through barbed wire matches and tables and all sorts of other ****. Well, I'm here to put you on notice, Sabu. Your time here in ECWA is going to be limited. The challenge is out there for you to face me, to face the Human Suplex Machine. Tonight, I get to drop someone else on his head and choke him out but soon it will be you, Sabu. Beat me if you can, survive if I let you." Taz tosses away the microphone and gets ready as Jack Avatar comes out from the back, getting a good ovation from the crowd and a 'Thank you' chant for re-opening ECWA. The beginning of this match is a very technical contest with go-behinds and leg-sweeps and ankle picks and each man jockeying for position and showing the other respect in their amateur backgrounds. But Jack gets a little out of his element when the match is taken outside and Taz drops him on the guardrail crotch first! Taz brings Jack Avatar back in the ring and begins going to town with suplexes, keeping Avatar off-guard! Then it's all over when Taz locks in the Tazmission! The referee checks on Avatar and eventually he just has to give! Winner: Taz by submission Match Rating: C

vs. 'The War Eagle' Chris Chavis vs. 'The Diamond Studd' Scott Hall And it's main event time! The Diamond Studd came out first, swaggering down to the ring to boos from the crowd. He climbed inside and grabbed a microphone from the ring announcer. Scott Hall: "Hey yo! So, we're here at the East Coast Wrestling Association, huh? You've got the Diamond Studd and the War Eagle in the main event. War...Eagle? I'm no bird hunter but what I am is the Diamond Studd, the ONLY diamond within this industry, chico. So bring on the war eagle and I'll prove to each and every one of you why diamonds are forever." And the crowd rose in cheers as the War Eagle Chris Chavis came running out from the back. Hall took off out of the ring while Chavis did a war dance inside, moving to the turnbuckles and going up on each one to get the crowd's approval before setting his ceremonial headdress out of the ring and turning to face Hall. The bell sounded and the match was underway with both men circling the other and locking up. Chavis caught Hall in a side headlock and then took him over into a pinning combination but only got a one count. Hall quickly got to his feet and pushed Chavis against the ropes. Hall ducked down and Chavis leaped over - Leap Frog by Hall - Chavis stops and turns - Tomahawk chop sends Hall to the mat! Chavis grabs Hall by the arm - Arm Drag into an Armbar! Chavis wrenched in the armbar for several moments before Hall got to his feet an yanked Chavis to the mat by his hair! The referee warned Hall but Hall ignored her as he went on the attack. Hall spent the next several minutes working on the back of Chris Chavis to boos from the crowd. They really wanted the Native American to make a comeback here. Any of Chavis' comebacks were short-lived when Hall used a cheap tactic here or there to keep the advantage. Then a double clothesline took both men to the mat! Referee Carrie Bloom began her ten count with both men slowly getting up at 4 and Chavis getting fired up by the crowd! Chavis began stomping the mat and then went into his War Dance! He ducked a clothesline attempt from Hall and took him down with a Tomahawk Chop! Chavis danced around the ring and hit another chop! Then another! And another! Chavis grabbed Hall and whipped him into the ropes - clothesline - ducked - fingerpoke to the eyes! Hall quickly slipped out of the ring and grabbed a chair, sliding it inside! Referee Carrie Bloom saw it and began the process of putting it outside the ring while Hall grabbed another chair! Hall slid back into the ring and... KEE-RACK! He pasted Chavis with the chair! Hall tosses the chair out of the ring and makes the cover: 1... NO! 2... NOT LIKE THIS! 3! And Scott Hall wins the first main event for the new ECWA! Winner: Scott Hall by pinfall Match Rating: D+ Scott Hall celebrates as the show comes to a close!
Thoughts/comments on this first show are always appreciated!
Scott Hall? Make sure he shows up. he good news is, if he ever no shows, just have Taz go out there and cut a 5 minute promo. Good show. Look forward to Taz vs. Sabu feud. BTW, I love your write ups. The matches are fun to read and the format is great.
Thanks for the comments! I truly appreciate it. And, yeah, I love writing for Taz. I used to be part of an e-fed called IWL way back in the day and Taz was always my main character there.

The Innovator of Violence Tommy Dreamer accidentally knocked out the referee, leading to his ability to use chairs on Richards! The fans chanted 'Don't come back' to both Mulkeys as the Eliminators took care of business. Kronus showed his athleticism early with a handspring elbow in the corner. Saturn hit Randy with t-bone suplex and soon into the match, The Eliminators set up Bill Mulkey and landed their Total Elimination finisher! The fans weren't sure what to make of Mr. La La. They didn't much care for him but did boo Daniels after what he did earlier this evening in that attack on Tommy Dreamer. Daniels dominated the match as one might expect in this encounter. He finished it off by dropping Mr. Ooh La La with the Angel's Wings and then getting the three count before rolling out and heading back to the front row. Winner: Christopher Daniels Match Rating: E+

The crowd rose in cheers as out walked Rob Van Dam! Last week, I went to a draw with the man who is going to be in the main event tonight: Eddie Guerrero. Eddie, after the match I went over and offered to shake your hand and instead you slugged me in the mouth. That wasn't cool. And I know you're kinda busy tonight with your match against Sabu but next week, I don't have a match and you don't have a match so why don't we lace our boots up again and have a match together next week? How about it?" The crowd cheered, obviously wanting to see that! Eddie Guerrero stepped out from the back to boos from the crowd but remained at the top of the entrance ramp with a microphone. Eddie Guerrero: "You don't get it, do you, ese? Yokozuna remained in his corner as Tony Norris came down to a smattering of cheers from the crowd. Yokozuna crushed Norris in the corner early, maybe breaking some ribs in the process! Norris put up a bit of a fight but he couldn't do much to move the massive Yokozuna. Another avalanche in the corner set up the Banzai Drop from the second turnbuckle and a pinfall victory for this giant newcomer! Winner: Yokozuna Match Rating: E+

vs. Sabu vs. Eddie Guerrero And it's main event time as the Arabian Nightmare Sabu takes on Eddie Guerrero! The two men made their way down to the ring, as well as official Carrie Bloom. When the bell sounded, Sabu dove at Guerrero's legs but Guerrero sidestepped and stomped several times on the back of Sabu. Guerrero and Sabu went to the air early and often in this contest. Guerrero used hurancanranas and Sabu used monkey flips to regain advantages in this fairly even contest. Joel Gertner used this time to call Sabu a coward for not accepting Taz' challenge! Midway through the bout, Guerrero held the advantage and attempted to ground and pound Sabu by focusing on that lower back. Guerrero hit the Three Amigos, three straight vertical suplexes and went for the cover but only got a two count! Guerrero went up the turnbuckles, looking down at a prone Sabu and leaped for his Frog Splash... MISSED! Sabu rolled out of the way and both men were left lying on the mat! Sabu slowly began to regain his feet when the crowd began booing because they saw Taz heading down to the ring! Taz slid in behind Sabu and shoved him into a corner, causing the DQ! Winner: Sabu Match Rating: D Taz took several steps back, ignoring Eddie Guerrero as Guerrero slowly got to his feet. No, Taz and Sabu were looking eye to eye toward the center of the ring with Taz telling Sabu to bring it and Sabu not backing down! Suddenly, the locker room exploded out from the back and wrestlers jumped in the ring, seperating Taz and Sabu as the crowd booed! They wanna see these two go at it but it won't happen tonight! Have a safe drive home everyone!

Why do have all these guys in 1991 before they came to prominence? None of them had these gimmicks at this point. None of this makes any sense for the time period. Not that it's a massive, massive problem, but it is irritating to read Gertner's introduction before Shane Douglas even threw down the NWA title!

And none of these guys are over, except maybe Junkyard Dog or Scott Hall. Chris Chavis had the War Eagle gimmick before now and some of them are more generic than others, like Glacier not having the pyro show or anything. But mostly it's a little creative licensing and they had to get their start with those gimmicks somewhere, right?

Brian Lee and the Vampire Warrior come through the crowd, having that front row seat as always and once they hit the ring a brawl erupts. A decent tag team encounter to kick things off here on East Coast Wrestling Association action. The Pitbulls showed some good chemistry as a team. This rabid crowd didn't care for Brian Lee and made it known that they don't want him to come back. Lee tried to play off the crowd's hatred, of course. But it was the Vampire Warrior who fell victim to an amazing Super Bomb by the Pitbulls and Anthony Durante made the cover and got the three count. Winners: The Pitbulls Match Rating: E- Two more men came running in the ring while the Pitbulls celebrated, each carrying chairs! This was an excellent tag team encounter between these four men who are well-versed in scientific wrestling. Of course Jericho and Storm came from the Hart Family Dungeon so they know all about holds and counterholds. Furnas is a former powerlifter and he definitely showed off his power in this one. In the end, it was Jericho positioning Lafon with a Liontamer while Storm knocked Furnas off the apron. Hall stood in his corner and waited as Chris Chavis came running out from the back without a ceremonial headdress! Chris Chavis stepped inside the ring and made a play to the crowd for a moment before turning his attention to Scott Hall and the ECWA Heavyweight Title! The two wrestlers met in the center of the ring where Hall removed his toothpick and then tossed it in Chavis' face! Referee Jim Mitchell had to step in between the two before he called for the bell. The two men circled each other and then locked up with Hall wrenching in a side headlock but Chavis drew him back to the ropes and then shot him off. A shoulderblock by Chavis sent Hall to the mat. Chavis bounced off the ropes and jumped over Hall and then came back with a clothesline that sent Hall right back to the mat. Chavis made a cover but only got a 1 count before Hall kicked out and the Diamond Studd exited the ring to catch his breath. Moments later, Hall grabbed Chavis by the ankle and dragged him outside the ring. Chavis blocked a punch and hit Hall with a Native American chop! Chavis whipped Hall toward the guardrail but Hall reversed and Chavis hit hard, clutching his ribs. Hall made a little fun of Chavis' Native American dance outside the ring before approaching Chavis and grabbing him by the head, ramming that head into the steel ringpost before tossing Chavis back in and following him in. Hall spent the next several minutes working over the rib area and back of Chavis while the crowd tried to get Chavis back into it. A backbreaker by Hall had referee Jim Mitchell asking Chavis if he wanted to give it up but Chavis wouldn't give! Hall released the hold and lifted the War Eagle, tossing him toward the ropes. Chavis came back, ducking a clothesline and then both men hit a clothesline and both men went down! Referee Jim Mitchell began his ten count on both men and it was Hall that was the first one up but Chavis was using the ropes to get to his feet. Hall came over and hit Chavis with a forearm shot but Chavis shrugged it off! Chavis began going into that Native American dance, shrugging off blows from Hall! The crowd was pumped as Chavis bounced off the ropes and took down Hall with a clothesline! Another rope run and another clothesline by Chavis! The War Eagle is on fire! He grabs Hall and whips him into the ropes - POWERSLAM and a cover: 1... 2... Kickout! Somehow Scott Hall kicked out of the powerslam but Chavis isn't done! Chavis pulls up Hall and drops him with a Native American chop before moving to the turnbuckles and climbing up top! What is he going to do??? Chavis leaps... HALL PULLS THE REFEREE IN FRONT! Chavis' cross body hit the official! Hall pulls himself to his feet and kicks a stunned Chavis in the gut - DDT! Chavis is down and hurt and Hall gets up, taunting Chavis before seeing that the referee is still down! Hall rolls outside the ring and grabs a chair, yelling at the crowd before sliding the chair inside the ring and following it in. Hall sets the chair down and grabs Chavis, signalling for that Diamond Death Drop! What is he going to do??? Hall pulls Chavis in and lifts him up - DIAMOND DEATH DROP ON THE CHAIR!! If Chavis wasn't out before, he certainly is now! Hall shakes the referee to wake him up, tossing the chair outside the ring and covering Chavis: 1... 2... 3!! We have a NEW ECWA Heavyweight Champion but what a horrible way to win it! Winner: Scott Hall Match Rating: C- Scott Hall is handed the ECWA Heavyweight Title belt and raises it up to boos from the crowd and that's all we have for you tonight!

Alright, here's the deal. I think I've done a pretty poor job of doing diaries, after finding out that I have started 26 in 2 years. That's pretty bad. So what I have decided to do is to take a step back from diary writing and do some reading. Read the tips, read up on everyone else's diaries and promote them for awhile. Then the next diary that I decide to do will be my last one. I am sorry to those of you who have been reading this and all the other diaries I have done. I know this might villify me a little here as being rather flaky and still doing the start/stop thing but I believe this is for the best. Thank you to those who have been reading and when I decide to do my final diary I hope that everyone will read there. If not, I completely understand. Thank you again.
