NWL: The National Wrestling League

Recommended Posts

The wrestling business is a funny old world. In one way or another, Vince McMahon had put each of the twelve men sat around the table out of business. They all said they hated him and his ratings whore WWE but they were all still here today. All it took was one letter. "I’m glad you could all make it today," said McMahon as they entered the room, but it wasn’t the McMahon they were all expecting. "I know you all thought Vince was going to be here, but I had a feeling if you knew it was me then you wouldn’t attend." "Your damn right I wouldn’t have come! What a waste of time, let’s go boys!!" came a disgruntled voice from the back. "You can all leave if you want to guys, there are plenty of people who want to hear what I have to say, and I just thought you would want in on the ground level..." Nobody left their seats. "Good...Now, it is with great pleasure and pride that I can officially announce that the WWE has a new owner...me." "Well congratulations, but what the hell has this got to do with us? In case you didn’t notice, you and your family already won the war." "The thing is gentlemen, whilst I and my father agreed on many things; I always thought we needed competition to stay strong. That’s where you come in." "Hold on now, what are you suggesting?" asked another member of the twelve, “You want us to start up another promotion just so you have somebody else to destroy?" "Not exactly guys...Y'see, I've had an idea running around my head for the last few years that I think could be huge. The NWL....The National Wrestling League." The whole room groaned in unison "Now hear me out! I know there have been attempts to do this kind of thing before but not on a scale like this. Just think twelve teams of wrestlers from across the country competing against each to see who the best is. We run all the wrestling hot beds every week with different opponents every time to keep the matches fresh. We've got the whole WWE roster at our disposal, plus everyone we didn’t pick up from TNA and RoH when they went bust...sorry guys..." "And what makes you think any of us have the money to get involved with this? You know exactly how much Vince gave us for our companies." "I know, I know, and I genuinely am sorry for any...harsh business practices that he employed over the years but I really want to make amends. Here's the deal gentlemen. I am offering each of you ownership of a region for the low introductory price of nothing." The room fell silent "Don't all accept at once guys! Think of it as the government giving back land to the Native Americans...only you'll still unofficially be under the WWE banner...." "Ahhh, now it becomes a little clearer! So we’re all going to be working for you?" "Technically yes. I will have final say on the outcome of the winner of all the matches, leagues and tournaments, but I'm always open to suggestion. Once all the teams are finalised, I'm planning on running a draft and I’m going to hand over all control to the owners to choose who they want. You will all be paid handsomely of course, and any money made from gate receipts is yours to keep, all I ask is that I keep all the merchandise rights. So...who’s in?" There is still silence in the room, nobody wanting to be the first to show their hand. Suddenly, a man who has been silent throughout speaks up from the back. “I spent the best part of my life fighting tooth and nail with Vince. He took my livelihood, my passion and my spirit. Despite it all, I always respected him in a way because he was the only one of us who was able to take things to the next level and make it stick. He was the only one of us who consistently gave the audience what they wanted. So I only have one question. What does Vince think about all this?" "Ermm, well, I haven’t exactly spoken to him about it yet...." "Ok, but what do you think he will say when he finds out?" "Honestly? I think he's going to absolutely hate it!" "OK...Where do I sign?" With that, everybody in the room put pen to paper and shook hands with each other. They all left laughing and joking and making predictions, confident that they would, at the very least, put one over on their old nemesis. As the last of the men left the room, he turned to his new business partner. "I hope you realise what you've just done? Do you really think you have what it takes to keep all those egos happy at the same time?" "I think you're forgetting I am a McMahon! Before you go, I just wanted to say thanks for stepping up for me tonight. I really don't think that anybody else would have signed up if you hadn't Mr Turner." "Please, call me Ted. Just do me a favour, make sure there's a team in Georgia, I don't travel this far for anyone Mrs McMahon." "I'll see what I can do Ted, oh, and please, Call me Stephanie."

NWL.COM The National Wrestling League Welcome to the official website of the NWL. Since the announcement of the formation of The National Wrestling League, wrestling fans around the country have been speculating as to what the twelve teams will be called, where they will be from, and who the owners are. Over the next few days NWL.COM will be exclusively revealing just that. Today we announce the first three, starting with... OWNER JEFF JARRETT GENERAL MANAGER JERRY LAWLER After the untimely collapse of TNA wrestling, Jeff Jarrett jumped at the chance to return to his roots and head up the Tennessee Royals. And who better to manage them than the King himself, Jerry Lawler? Lawler has already made his first signing, that of long-time broadcast colleague Jim Ross. Both men have strong ties to the traditions of this wrestling stronghold and with a wealth of knowledge at their disposal they already have a few names in mind for when draft time rolls around. The Royals are set to play their home fixtures at both the Tennessee state fairgrounds and the Pyramid arena in the heart of Memphis. OWNER ERIC BISCHOFF GENERAL MANAGER HULK HOGAN The man who made record breaking profits as head of WCW and gave the WWE a run for its money returns to head up this Los Angeles based Franchise. Eric has been looking for a way back into the wrestling business and see's this as an opportunity to prove to the naysayers that he has what it takes to consistently run a successful wrestling company. And where Eric and success are mentioned, so must "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan. The man who revolutionised the industry is looking to do it once more, but this time in a backstage capacity. Hogan and his team, consisting of trainers Ed Leslie, Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags, coach Jimmy Hart and scout Mean Gene Okerland have made it clear that they only have one aim. To win the first ever National Wrestling League. The Hulksters will be running wild all over the Los Angeles memorial sports arena which can hold 16,000 plus hulkamaniacs OWNER TED TURNER GENERAL MANAGER KURT ANGLE Billionaire Ted was the owner of the only wrestling company in history to outrate and outsell the WWE but has not been involved in the wrestling world since selling said company to the McMahons. His love for the sport revitalised, he has teamed up with Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle to try and recapture the magic. Angle has fond memories of the Atlanta area, as it was here that he won his coveted gold medal. Taking a step back from in-ring action due to career ending neck injury, Kurt will no doubt instill his roster with a huge dose of intensity, integrity and intelligence. The Athletics will be operating out of the largest stadium in the league, The Georgiadome. Thats it for part one. Log on tomorrow for the next three NWL teams.

NWL.COM The National Wrestling League Welcome to NWL.COM for the second part of this four part series. Today we will be highlighting three more teams looking to make their mark on The National Wrestling League. OWNER JIM CORNETTE GENERAL MANAGER RIC FLAIR Ran by two of the most respected men in the industry, The Carolina Horsemen will be nothing if not prepared. Jim Cornette has held many powerful positions in the top promotions in the country as well as running his own Smokey Mountain Wrestling. GM Ric Flair is known world wide for his hedonistic ways but backs it up with a traditional wrestling stlye which helped him survive in a world where his contempories failed to stay relevant. Beloved by the fans Carolina faithful, Flair and his charges are sure to draw full houses to The Greensboro Coliseum. OWNER DAVE PRAZAK GENERAL MANAGER KEVIN NASH Founder of SHIMMER wrestling and former IWA Mid-South booker Dave Prazak heads west to Sin City to head up The Las Vegas Jacknives. Prazak knows the independent scene inside out and will be looking to use his contacts to unearth some hidden jems in the quest for success. Somebody who will feel right at home under the neon lights is GM Big Sexy Kevin Nash. Nash served his apprenticeship as booker in WCW and is hoping to make the step up a winning one. With the high profile support of media mogul Donald Trump, Nash and Prazak have the benefit of the luxurious surroundings of Caesars Palace to call their home. OWNER PAUL HEYMAN GENERAL MANAGER SHANE DOUGLAS Heyman and Douglas return to the city where they shared their biggest successes...as well as some high profile failures. The Phillie fans in the New Alhambra Arena (former ECW arena) will expect hard hitting, boundary pushing hybrid action, of which this management can deliver in spades. Both men have burnt more than their fair share of bridges over the years but could turn this to their advantage. Nothing fires Heyman up more than an US vs THEM attitude, and if Heyman and Douglas can get their roster drinking from the Kool-aid, then The Franchizers could be a team to watch. Thats it for part two, tune in tomorrow for part three

NWL.COM The National Wrestling League Six teams have already been announced for the inaugural NWL season and today we will exclusively reveal three more OWNER SCOTT D'AMORE GENERAL MANAGER BRET HART The Foundations are the first of two teams that will be based outside of the United States. The name has two meanings. First, it is a tribute to the famous Hart Foundation that ran roughshod through the WWE. Second, it is a reminder of the fundamentals of wrestling that D'amore and Hart place so much stock in. D'amore is a well respected trainer of young talent, and has nurtured many current superstars through their formative years. Hart, a national icon in Canada, has been away from the wrestling scene for several years but has remained in the hearts and minds of the fans. Hart and D'amore will no doubt be looking for a technically sound team who knows how to get the job done. The Toronto fans at the Air Canada Centre, known for their refined tastes, are certain to get behind The Foundations...as long as they win. OWNER DIXIE CARTER GENERAL MANAGER SHAWN MICHEALS Although she lobbied for ownership of The Tennessee Royals, Dixie must feel like the cat that got the cream as she teams up with the sexy boy himself, Shawn Michaels. Dixie is the only female owner in the league but has already proven that gender doesn’t matter as president of the defunct TNA wrestling. Michaels made the most successful comeback since Lazarus, returning to WWE competition after career threatening back injury. Although his in ring career is now officially over, Michaels will be as confident as ever that he can continue to be just as successful in his new role. His number one aim? To entertain the fans. No doubt the show stoppers will blow the roof off the AT and T center OWNER AFA THE WILD SAMOAN GENERAL MANAGER KONNAN AND HECTOR GUERRERO The second of our international teams is the Mexico City Warriors, so named as a tribute to the great wrestling family, the Guerrero's. (Guerrero's English translation is warrior.) At first, Afa may seem like an odd choice to own a piece of the proud heritage of Mexican wrestling, but his pedigree cannot be questioned. A respected trainer, booker and owner who will do all he can to bring championships south of the border. The main draw for Mexican fans will no doubt be Konnan and Hector. They are the only co-GM's in the league and will be hoping they can coexist. Hector, brother of the late, great Eddie Guerrero, knows how to deliver for the Hispanic crowds at the Arena Mexico. He will draw on all his families experience as well as his time mentoring LAX in TNA. Just don't mention the gobbledygooker. Konnan is mainstream personified in Mexico, often referred to as the Mexican Hulk Hogan. He has worked all over the world for many different promotions including WWE, WCW and ECW and has the contacts to bring in the best that Mexico has to offer. Viva la raza!

NWL.COM The National Wrestling League This is the fourth and final NWL.COM exclusive of the last three teams that will compete in the very first National Wrestling League. OWNER JESSE VENTURA GENERAL MANAGER LARRY ZBYSZKO Who better to run Minnesota's NWL franchise than the man who was Governor? Ventura has made a career out of controversy but his four years in office showed the nation that when a job needs doing, Jesse is your man. The Minneapolis native will be hoping that at the end of the season, his approval ratings will be as high as when he was a political leader. The man charged with bringing the good times back to Minnesota is the living legend Larry Zbyszko. Known in the area for his time with the AWA, Zbyszko is a huge proponent of tradition and respect...but knows how to take the low road to victory when needed. OWNER VINCE RUSSO GENERAL MANAGER JOHN LAYFIELD The self appointed wrestling gods of John Layfield and Vince Russo will have to pull out all the stops to keep the MSG crowd on their side. Vince Russo is perhaps best known for his time as head writer of RAW during the peak of the Monday Night Wars and has had other, less successful stints as writer for WCW and TNA. Russo will be hoping that as head of The New York Gods he can finally be the saviour he always promised to be. An interesting quirk in the Gods hierarchy is that this could be the only case in the league where the GM is richer than the owner! Business tycoon and former wrestler John Layfield is an adopted son of New York City, telling anybody who will listen that it is the greatest city in the world. Will this be the greatest wrestling city in the country come the end of the season? Only time will tell, but with two mavericks at the helm, prepare for fireworks bigger than Time Square at new years. OWNER ANTONIO INOKI GENERAL MANAGER DAVE BATISTA The twelfth and final NWL franchise reside in the nations capital, and with these two men in charge, there's sure to be plenty of capital punishment. Inoki is an MMA pioneer, fighting amongst others, Muhammad Ali. His keen business sense and knowledge of business trends make him an ideal and experienced candidate for ownership. He will expect nothing but complete professionalism from his GM. Luckily, in Dave Batista, he has a man who demands respect. Turning down the offer of a cushy role within the Ric Flair managed Carolina Horsemen, Batista instead decided to go it alone when the GM job in Washington became available. Will he live to regret this brave decision, or will The Animals have the last laugh? It's only fitting that we plead the fifth in the home of democracy until after the final bell rings in the Verizon center. So there you have it, all twelve teams are set for the first annual National Wrestling League. Here’s a quick recap of the teams in full THE TENNESSEE ROYALS THE HOLLYWOOD HULKSTERS THE ATLANTA ATHLETICS THE CAROLINA HORSEMEN THE LAS VEGAS JACKNIVES THE PHILADELPHIA FRANCHISERS THE TORONTO FOUNDATIONS THE SAN ANTONIO SHOW STOPPERS THE MEXICO CITY WARRIORS THE MINNESOTA PREDATORS THE NEW YORK GODS THE WASHINGTON ANIMALS The draft is due to take place in two weeks time. Each franchise will pick seven wrestlers (six male, one female) from a pool of over 300 wrestlers. The order of the picks will be decided by a random draw before the draft. The last team to pick will get two picks, and then the draft will continue in reverse order. Make sure to log on to NWL.COM for live and exclusive coverage.

OK this may be a little cheeky but if anybody has the ability or the desire to create a logo for any of the teams I would be eternally indebted and greatful. I want to give this a more polished feel but my limited brain capacity is already pushed to the limit! I hope people are enjoying the style so far. Thankyou in advance.

This is looking promising. And because you asked so nice, here's a couple logos.

So I "aquired" a copy of photoshop and tried to teach myself in a day but as you can see I aint no expert! I'll try to finish the rest of the teams tomorrow unless I get any better from you lovely people! Welcome to live and uninterupted coverage of the 2008 NWL draft. The draw has been made and the order is set so lets get the show on the road! NWL DRAFT FIRST ROUND No real suprise here as Ric Flair picks Triple H. The two men have been friends for many years and Hunter is one of the most decorated superstars of the modern era. A good pick here I think, as HHH will certainly fit in with the regime of the Horsemen and has lots of big match experience under his belt. A great wrestler to build this franchise around. Kevin Nash and his Jacknives also go for a familiar face. Samoa Joe not only held the RoH title for a record 21 months but also had an 18 month undefeated streak in TNA. Joe knows how to get on top, and more importantly for Las Vegas, how to stay there. Even though Brock Lesnar has been away from the North American wrestling world for over four years, his surprise eligability in the draft made him a shoe-in for a first round pick. There is no questioning Brocks talent. He is a former NCAA champion, WWE champion, IWGP champion and accomplished MMA fighter. The only worry is how comitted he will be, but if he can make it anywhere it will be his home state. In a recurring theme of the first round, The Hulksters pick somebody they know only too well, but who could argue with the choice of the largest athelete in the world, The Big Show Paul Wight? A huge physical presence and knock out punch are enough to make Big Show one of the most feared prospects in the draft. A great pick by Hogan. And from the largest athelete in the world, we go to perhaps one of the smallest. Rey Misterio may be only 5ft 6in tall but he has a heart and desire as big as anyone. Misterio is one of the most popular Mexican wrestlers of all time so is a perfect pick for The Warriors. Injuries in recent years have slowed down his explosive offence somewhat, but a half speed Misterio is still faster than most draft prospects. An exciting if expected pick Kurt Angle and AJ Styles had a bitter fued in TNA but Angle knows talent when he see's it. Is this a case of letting bygones be bygones or keeping friends close and enemies closer? Either way, Georgia native AJ is nothing short of Phenomenal. From one Phenom to another, The Undertaker is as impressive today as he was when he debuted eighteen years ago. In fact, The Undertaker has been compared to a fine wine, improving as each year passes. Whilst there may not be too many years left in the tank, The Undertaker has an impressive win/loss record and is the most respected athelete in any lockeroom. A great man to have in any organisation. Bret Harts Foundations keep things tight by chosing a wrestler trained by Stu and Keith Hart. First ever Undisputed champion Jericho is a great all rounder who combines flair and fundamentals. Another great lockeroom leader and a man more than capable of helping get the best out of his team mates. Perhaps the first surprise pick of the first round, American Dragon Bryan Danielson doesn't seem like a natural fit for for the Batista lead Animals. Don't let Danielsons size fool you though as he is considered by many to be the best technical wrestler in the world today. This could prove to be a masterstroke by Batista and Inoki Controversy seems to follow Randy Orton wherever he goes, which should make him a perfect fit for The Gods. To be fair to Orton, he does seem to have matured greatly over the past couple of years, but he is still prone to the occasional outburst. If Layfield and Russo can keep him happy and motivated, Ortons natural talents should silence the critics. John Cena is an amazing athelete with superhuman strength. Cena was a surefire first round pick, with only perhaps his injury record stopping him getting picked first overall. If Cena can stay healthy then he will be a huge success for the Show Stoppers. Shawn Micheals knows all about injuries and will no doubt have the best doctors money can buy at Cena's disposal. Returning to wrestling after a brief hiatus, Rob will be chomping at the bit to get back into the ring and remind everybody why he's know as the whole Dam show. Impressive speed, strength and stamina make RVD an excellent first rounder

Without a doubt a badass set of first round picks. Danielson belongs in the first round for sure for anyone who has ever seen his work! Can't wait to see how this all pans out! Very intrigued in the NWL Concept! Now back to work on MLW... bruhahaha!

Minor quibble but since it appears to have gone unnoticed I mention it. You may want to have the San Antonio Show Stopers logo fixed. There are supposed to be two P's in "Stoppers". Little thing to be sure. But attention to the little things like that will keep the doubters at bay.
