The baby of the legendary Verne Gagne, the AWA was the long time competetor of both the NWA and WWWF. The AWA's main base of operations was out of the Midwest,primarly the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Throughout the 1960's-1970's, the AWA was powered by stars such as Gagne, Nick Bockwinkle, Mad Dog Vachon, Billy Robinson, Ray Stevens, Pat Patterson and much more, and it's syndicated All Star Wrestling program was one of the most successful shows of it's time. However, as the McMahon led WWF promotion gained steam, the AWA would lose it during the 1980's, losing many home grown stars such as Hulk Hogan, Gene Okerland, Tito Santana, Bobby Heenan and numerous others. Even with a weekly, sometimes even daily television show on ESPN, the AWA spiraled deeper and deeper into debt as the 1980's progressed. By 1990, the roster had become depleted, a PPV Superclash 3 with the CWA and WCCW had failed and it's Team Challenge Series had been an unabashed failure. Along with this, Gagne was entrenched in a serious lawsuit against the State of Minnesota over a eminent domain issue over Gagne's land in Lake Minnetonka, which saw a majority of Gagne's money going into. In 1991, the American Wrestling Association went bankrupt and effectivly folded. In 1996, Dale Gagne, a Minnesotian claiming to be of Gagne blood opened a variation of the AWA, cheifly running charity shows across Minnesota. In mid 2003, Vince McMahon approached Verne and Greg Gagne about potentially selling the WWE the rights to the AWA trademark and tape library. The Gagne's intially rejected the deal. But the rejuvenated talk of the AWA intrigued the Gagne's, espically Greg. Again in early 2004 McMahon approached about acquiring the full library. Gagne again refused, which lit a fire under McMahon, in a phone conversation claiming he will get those rights if it's the last thing he ever does. In April of 04, Verne signed over the full rights, library and trademarks to his son Greg. Greg then promply sued Dale Gagne/Granger for misrepresenting the AWA, which he would win and recieve over 5 million dollars as payment. Gagne then contacted now former head of MLW and the failed H2 promotion Court Bauer about a possible reformation of the AWA with Gagne as owner and himself and Bauer as co head bookers. Gagne and Bauer would then reach out to several investors about funding for the new AWA. It was then Bauer and Gagne's job to establish a roster able to be on par with one of the glory days of the AWA. OOD: This is where we begin as the roster is introduced and such. He is also one of the most popular gajin wrestlers in all of Japan. And if you ask him, he's the best damn wrestler on the planet. His reputation is as long as his list of title accomplishments. A former NWA, MLW and ECW World Heavyweight Champion and a former Zero One World Champion, he is considered one of the most obnoxious and hated men in all of pro wrestling. His feuds with Jerry Lynn, Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman, Dusty Rhodes and more have dragged across the country and have spilled gallons upon gallons of blood. His Extreme Horsemen stable was one of the most feared groups in all of wrestling. He goes by many nicknames, "The King Of Kings", "The King Of Old School", "The Old School Icon", whatever name he uses, he is a champion. A man taken from the mold of former great AWA brawlers like The Crusher and The Brusier, he is the definition of a brawler. He is considered to be one of the most imitated wrestlers on the planet. His beer drinking, cigarette smoking, Singapore cane wielding anticts make him known all over the world. Known as "The Hardcore Icon", he WAS ECW, a former 5 time ECW World Champion and Tag Champion. A former NCAA Wrestling standout, losing once in his entire college career, to Kurt Angle mind you, he also is an undefeated MMA star defeating men such as Ken Shamrock and Mu Bai Choi. This man claims he will pick up where his uncle, General Adnan al-Kassei left off. Much like his uncle, he boasts impressive in ring credentials but would much rather stay on the outside of the ring and lead his clients to victory. His millions of dollars he claims he has made "off the oil fields of Iraq and off the heads of American soilders" funds both his lavish lifestyle and his unnamed "wealth" of talent. He claims he and his stable of wrestlers will not only take all of the titles the AWA will offer but will infact change the name of the AWA to the Arabian Wrestling Association. It's obvious I'm a huge mark of wrestling from the "oldschool" era, so anything that tries to resemble that time catches my attention Brody Terkay is my fav thus far!
