World Wrestling Federation 1992: The Greatest Story Ever Told

Never before or since in Professional Wrestling has there been such a deep collection of stars at or near the peak of their careers in one promotion -- an opportunity virtually every organization in the wrestling world would give a limb to duplicate. 1992 could have been, for all intents and purposes, the type of year that turned Professional Wrestling into a perennial prime time contender.

But has seemed to be the case throughout the history of wrestling, opportunities squandered and becoming the victims of circumstance, both through creative control and legal difficulties forced all of these dream match-ups to go by the wayside.

It appeared as though Vince McMahon had actually done it: Taken an industry gridlocked by its own territorialism and nationalized it, marketed it as a palatable brand: Made it real. And suddenly he was holding in his hand a deck of playing cards so stacked that even Ted Turner's heaps of cash seemed to compile a roster that paled in comparison.

Soon, the Federal authorities came calling, curious about Vince McMahon's ventures into the professional bodybuilding world, and his alleged peddling of performance enhancing substances. Sports Illustrated recently published an expose on the life of former NFL football star Lyle Alzada, who accused steroids of being the cause of his deteriorating, lethal and irreversibly worsening health condition.

Professional Sports, however, had long since had anti-trust and buddy-buddy agreements with the federal government, and thus Vince McMahon became an easy and acceptable target to both soothe the whoas of a concerned public and to maintain the mainstream marketability of more traditional professional sports.

Within the rank and file of the world of Professional Wrestling this was difficult on many levels. No one, even McMahon's closest compatriots, even his family, could have guessed the level to which McMahon would feel paranoid toward Ted Turner as a result of his purchase of WCW a few years earlier. As the risk of legal action based on steroids loomed, McMahon confided to friend, at the time, Dave Meltzer that he believed that Dr. Zahorian, a steroids peddler, among other wrestlers who were threatening to testify against McMahon and the WWF, were doing so on the dime and at the discretion of Turner -- that all of these men, once the case concluded, would jump ship to World Championship Wrestling to deliver the final death blow to Vince's beloved enterprise.

It is ironic, really, that this would be the case -- McMahon had done what no other business man had, had the moxy or wisdom to do; and that is turn the entire industry into a profitable media venture. His biggest fear, it seemed, was being outdone by a man who, with more resources, more friends and more ambition, could possibly do it even better.

And so, with dozens of capable wrestlers, already over, already profitable on his roster, McMahon quipped and quivered and conceded to the desires of those he trusted most; men, who, as history shows, would ultimately turn on him.

In this, a retrospect on the possibility of what was, we are going to go back in time to January 1992 and take in on a wrestling promotion that had everything going for it and against it, all at the same time. In this alternate history, we're going to grab hold of the reigns, and do what seemed almost imminent 16 years ago.

This is, as only a wrestling fan could tell it, the greatest story ever told.

Rules and Game Features

  • Some of you may remember my WCW 1998 dynasty from on here that went abruptly un-updated for a while. If you do not remember it, I encourage you to check it out (it is short) to see what style of reading you may be in for here. Unfortunately, I ran into the same type of burn out that plagues most members of this forum, and why even the best of us -- tristam, keefmoon and so on take breaks once in a while.
  • As a result of this, the formula for this dynasty will be a little different than others, in that it WILL BE story driven and the results WILL BE detailed, however -- the detail will be left to Pay Per Views/Big Monthly Events and storylines. Standard Television wrestling matches will be given appropriate, though less detailed attention. This is just to keep things moving, but also to keep an element of real story telling to the dynasty. I am not a fan of dynasties that just constantly post match results. That is no fun to me. That is not Professional Wrestling to me. And I think part of the appeal of these dynasties is to see how history plays out over time -- not just over a few months, but years and years. In order to do this and maintain the playing ability of the game without agonizing over every little detail, there needs to be a happy medium. This means that, at times, multiple shows will be posted in a short period so that predictions, while welcome, will not be possible for every little show. Such is life. But stick around, and don't get overwhelmed, as the story is sure to be great.
  • Props, as always, to tristam, who has picked up where I left of with the WCW 1998 timeframe and done as good a job as I could ever hope to with booking that point in time.

- I am using the newly acquired TEW Wrestling 2008 to book this promotion, and the 1991-1992 REAL WORLD mod, with the 1992 file, obviously.

Current Champions

(as of Monday, Week 1, January 1992)

World Wrestling Federation Champion

VACANT

- Hulk Hogan was stripped of the WWF Championship by WWF President Jack Tunney for unsportsmanlike conduct in achieving victory over adversary The Undertaker. Previously, The Undertaker had defeated Hulk Hogan by tombstone piledriving him onto a steel chair, awarding Undertaker the World's Title. However, since both men ultimately cheated to win the title, President Tunney ruled the title vacant and that every Superstar should have a shot at it, at the Royal Rumble.

World Wrestling Federation Intercontinental Champion

BRET HART

- At Summerslam 1991, Bret "Hitman" Hart officially hit his stride as a prominent singles wrestler in American professional wrestling, by defeating perennial WWF Intercontinental Champion, Mr. Perfect, Curt Hennig, in what remains one of the greatest Summerslam matches of all time.

World Wrestling Federation Tag Team Champions

LEGION OF DOOM

- The Legion of Doom, also known as the Road Warriors, are one of the most charismatic and thunderously dominant duos in Pro Wrestling history. With incredible physiques, a stiff, intimidating nature and an appearance of virtual indestructible, they are the current Tag Team Champions in a thin, and a bit beleaguered tag division.
