The Grand Championship Tournament (A what-if fantasy using WreSpi)

Recommended Posts

Note: This tournament is played out using the 2005 Real World mod for Wrespi.

I separated the field into two 16-wrestler brackets, with the winner of each facing each other in the final. Enjoy.

The Grand Championship Tournament

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, wrestling found itself wondering what it could do to contribute to the relief effort. The brainchild of Vince McMahon, the Grand Championship was to bring together the 32 best wrestlers from US based organizations who were able to appear. For one series of events, 30 matches leading up to the Grand Championship final, organizations would be forgotten. All that would be known is the spirit of competition to raise money for charity. To support the event, the semi-retired Hulk Hogan, and the retired from competition Stone Cold Steve Austin, and The Rock, entered into the event...although the list of entrants is kept a closely-guarded secret until they actually step into the ring in Round One.

Bracket One--Madison Square Garden, NY

Day One--Round of 16

The capacity crowd of close to 20,000 was as jacked up as a crowd could be for a night of wrestling like they had never seen before. Howard Finkel came out, and welcomed the crowd to the Grand Championship tournament. And then

it began.

(P.S. All matches are normal matches, except that you can be DQ'd, but you can NOT be counted out--don't blame me, blame Adam :))

Match 1--Chris Benoit vs. Kevin Nash

Nash dominates the early going with his size and power, until Benoit manages to ground him at the 8 minute mark. A Benoit flurry is ended by Nash reversing an Irish Whip and throwing Benoit out of the ring, where several minutes of back and forth offense are highlighted by a Nash DDT of Benoit through a table that the referee misses. Nash rolls Benoit back in, but only gets a two count. He picks him up and hits a brutal Jacknife Powerbomb, but Benoit kicks out at two. Back to back attempts by Nash at the Running Big Boot are countered by Benoit clotheslines. After the second clothesline, Benoit goes up to the top rope for the flying headbutt...and misses it. Nash picks him up...Jacknife Powerbomb...1...2..Benoit barely kicks out. Nash picks him up again...Jacknife Powerbomb...1...2...and the crowd goes wild as Benoit kicks out yet again at the last instant. Finally, Nash delivers a brutal third straight Jacknife Powerbomb, and gets the win at the 25 minute mark.

Match 2--Brock Lesnar vs A.J. Styles

The crowd is hyped up for this match of two contrasting wrestlers as we begin. Brock has problems getting going early as he tries to use his big size advantage, but every move gets countered by A.J. Brock throws A.J. out of the ring at the six minute mark, but Brock is starting to get frustrated at his inability to get anything consistent going. Finally at 9:00, Brock scores with three straight belly-to-belly suplexes on the outside, but an attempt at a DDT through a table is reversed by A.J. and Brock gets his own DDT into a steel chair, which fortunately for A.J. only gets him a warning from the referee.

A.J. then drags Brock back into the ring, but Brock regains control and scores with back-to-back DDT's, but only gets a 2-count. A.J. reverses an attempt at a third, and then scores with one of his own at the 13-minute mark. With Brock reeling, A.J. irish-whips Brock into the ropes, with Brock accidentally running into the referee. A.J. then throws Brock out of the ring...neckbreaker on a steel chair!...ref is still out...Styles Clash on a steel chair...ref is still out...SECOND Styles Clash on the chair...ref is coming to...and A.J. rolls him back in and gets the 1-2-3 at 15:00!

An upset here that has the fans on their feet and the tourney is only just getting under way!

Match 3--Bill Goldberg vs Christian

Christian comes out to applause, and the crowd waits anxiously...and then screams as they hear the deafening "You're Next!" on the P.A.

Goldberg runs to the ring and we are under way!

Unfortunately, the match doesn't live up to the intro. Goldberg's ring rust shows as he repeatedly misses moves or has them countered, but Christian is able to get almost zero offense going. Finally, the snooze-fest is ended at the 21 minute mark. Goldberg scores with the Spear/Jackhammer combo, getting a 2.9 count...but a second Jackhammer puts Christian away. But the crowd is nuts anyway for the return of Goldberg. Now imagine how they'd have reacted if they saw a GOOD match :).

Match 4--Hulk Hogan vs. Edge

Edge comes out, looking none the worse for wear from his recent layoff after knee surgery, to a good crowd reaction...we're waiting for his opponent...the house lights go out...we are sitting in total darkness for a few seconds...

"I am a Real American..."

And the rest is drowned out as the crowd goes insane as the Hulkster makes his way down to the ring. After he does the hand to the ear bit for the crowd...we're on.

And after that intro, we get a snoozefest that heats up quickly late. Pretty even for the first 30 minutes or so, with nothing much of note. Then, at 30:00...

Edge has been battering Hogan for the last couple of minutes. He goes for a DDT...Hogan backdrops him to get out of it. Picks Edge up...HUGE slam. Pcks him up again...irish whip into the ropes...and the boot connects! Hogan asks the crowd if they want the Legdrop...they do...he connects! 1...2...Edge kicks out at the last moment. Hogan picks him up...irish whips him again.for the Big Boot...but meets a spear by Edge!

Cover...1...2...Hogan kicks out! Edge whips him into the ropes, but Hogan bangs into the ref, knocking him out. Edge picks Hogan up...throws him out of the ring...Edge follows...picks him up...Edgecution on a steel chair! Edge looks into the ring...ref is still out...another Edgecution on the chair! Edge looks into the ring...ref is starting to get his senses...Edge rolls Hogan back into the ring...cover...1...2...Hogan kicks out!...Edge picks him up...hits a third Edgecution!...and puts Hogan in the Edgeucator in the middle of the ring...the ref comes over...Hogan is OUT...and the ref stops the match!

Edge is your winner at 37:00!
