Fighters Improving

Is there a Number Sicence on how fast or how much fighters improve over time? For example When I first started the game I picked up Layla Holmes and in 1 year she eventually became my XCC Women's champ. Over the next year she defened her belt 4 times. While Alyson Arroway never got picked up by any promotion and skill wise was better tham Holmes. And eventually beat Holmes in a title match. So I guess my question is how and for how long should you rest fighters so they improve? And what kind of fighters do you feed them? I am currently experimenting with this. Thanks in advance for the advise.
