WWF News: THE Ross Report

JIM ROSS: I was at a meeting with Vince McMahon today, and we have talked about expanding our roster. Some talk about moving some people down a notch and possible releases, but at this time we are focused on providing the fans a superior product. Its my job as new VP talent relations to look for new talent.

While we are still number 1, Wcw have been taking us to the cleaners by signing away some of the biggest names we had.

The NEW Generation has been what the WWF has been pushing. While i understand the need to push new talent, i feel we need some more established faces to help give us that something extra needed to make new stars.

folks, I can tell you it won't be easy for us, but we are in for a hell of a ride.

Pro Wrestling Torch with Wade Keller

While talk is running rampant over changes at the upmarket offices of 'The Big Two', sources at ECW are insisting that they're not being phased by the change in approach at their bigger rivals and are sticking to the ideals that made them the most talked about wrestling company in 1994.

When Shane Douglas threw down the NWA title and proclaimed himself the new ECW champion, few people in Conneticuit or Atlanta will have paid much attention, a fundemental error according to owner Tod Gordon who insists that ECW are set to become 'the little company that could'.

Gordon told me "It's a real wait and see time for us. We've built a rabid fanbase who turn out to see the true stars of their youth like Terry Funk take on guys who weren't appreciated in the so-called big leagues like Shane Douglas and Too Cold Scorpio and mix up with our home grown stars such as The Sandman and Taz. We're diverse. We're an alternative and we plan to stay that way.

"We're proud to provide a real and sustainable alternative and our fans clearly appreciate the distinction between ourselves and the corporate beast that professional wrestling has become. With the most creative team the business behind us, the most solid and versatile group of workers and the greatest fans in the world to perform in front of, ECW cannot do anything except rise and rise.

I am certain that our roster is happy and content in Philly and I can assure you that we are pleased that they are part of our family."

A defiant message for sure but with WWF and WCW both looking to make substantial changes both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, how long can the ECW boat stay afloat before the talent begins to head for the lifeboats of a secure financial future in New York or Atlanta?

PWInsider reports that WCW has made some changes to its booking team just before their launch of the very first WCW Monday Nitro, with an unknown persona, whom the WCW staff refer to only as 'Hive', taking the book from Eric Bischoff. Bischoff will still be somewhat involved in booking but will now be focusing on developing his on-screen character more, where he is to assume the role of authority figure. What this will mean for the ongoing storylines of WCW, with the two biggest being Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage vs. The Dungeon of Doom and Sting vs. Ric Flair, only time will tell. Sources are reporting that the so called 'Hive' persona will be bringing in some fresh blood for his plans.

The State Patrol (Sgt. Buddy Lee and Lt. Earl Wright)

Recap of the two major WCW storylines

The Dungeon of Doom, led by The Taskmaster (Kevin Sullivan), who in turn is led by The Master (Curtis Iaukea), is a band of monsters and misfits with the sole aim to demolish Hulkamania. Recently joined by the powerful Giant, claiming to the the son of deceased wrestler Andre The Giant and blaiming Hogan for his death, The Dungeon is set to face off with Hulk Hogan and his brothers in arms, Sting and Randy Savage, for a fierce and intense WarGames match at Fall Brawl. Originally, Hogan was to be joined by former enemy Vader at his side, but Vader has recently gone AWOL and is no longer expected to be seen in WCW. So unless Hogan finds another warrior for his team, the showdown against the brutal monsters of The Dungeon is set to be a handicap match with 3 vs. 4... could this be the end of Hulkamania as we know it?

The other major feud is Sting vs. Ric Flair, a feud that may hibernate for long periods of time but otherwise seems to have been ongoing for years. Sting is the current holder of the US Title and Ric Flair has set his sight upon it. However, Ric Flair has recently been involved in heated arguments with his old friend and aide, Arn Anderson, whom he blames for his lack of success against Sting...

Expect to see both of these exciting feuds advance at the very first ever Monday Nitro! Why settle for the less when you can get the best wrestling on tv? Watch Nitro tonight, forget about inferior broadcasts!

The King Of Memphis to confront the hitman?

by Bill Apter

Hi, bill apter here with a scoop on tonights raw. I just was in memphis and while at a starbucks , i ran into Brian (lawler) Christopher , well he told me The king, (the wrestling one not Elvis) might have a special kings court tonight on raw, something about bret hart, and a bad experience with canadian bacon. Im not 100% sure what I heard, Starbucks was really really busy, when Brian rang up my coffee at the cash register. anyways somebody seriously should sign that guy. I didn't ask Brian, but word going around is WWF has yet to even make the guy an offer.

Welcome to the very first ever

WCW Monday Nitro

Before the show starts, we have a dark tag team championship match:

The Barrio Brothers vs. Bunkhouse Buck & Dick Slater ©

The champions retains in a match where they were never really seriously challenged.

Winners, and still champions: Bunkhouse Buck and Dick Slater

Rating: D+

The show then opens up with 'Mean' Gene Okerlund interviewing Eric Bischoff, who announces that he will now take a more active part in controlling the promotion, leaving the announcing job on Nitro to Tony Schiavone. Things will change, and not everyone is going to like it...

Rating: D-

We then see Arn Anderson approach Bischoff, explaining that his entaglement in the Ric Flair vs. Sting feud and surprising problems with longtime friend Ric Flair leaves him with the desire to enter into tonights match between Ric Flair and Sting for the US title, aiming to prove a little something to them both. Bischoff states that he can't just expect to be given a title shot just like that, but that he will set him up in a #1 contender match against no other than 'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan later tonight!

Rating: C-

We now tune in to the first match of the actual show:

Jushin Liger vs. 'Flyin' Brian Pillman

A very open and competitive match with many exciting moves. Pillman gets the pinfall.

Winner: Brian Pillman

Rating: C

We then go backstage to see Hulk Hogan approach Eric Bischoff. Hogan states that the war between the Dungeon of Doom and himself and his allies has gone on long enough, and that he want the chance to end it all at the Fall Brawl WarGames match! He demands that if his team wins, he will get a retirement match against The Taskmaster Kevin Sullivan! Bischoff agrees that the war has indeed dominated WCW for far too long, but that the other side would also need a big prize to win: a title shot! Hogan agrees, and states that it will never come to that, because his side will be victorious - and Bischoff then makes it official that the winner in the WarGames match may choose either a retirement match against The Taskmaster or a title shot against Hogan! Before Hogan leaves, Bischoff reminds him that since Vader went AWOL and is nowhere to find, Hogan's team is one down... and unless he finds a replacement, the match will be a handicap match.

Rating: B-

Now it's time for the beforementioned #1 contendership match:

Arn Anderson vs. Jim Duggan

Anderson dominated most of the match and cleanly pinned Duggan.

Winner: Arn Anderson

Rating: C-

Anderson stays in the ring as the US title threeway match is up next:

Arn Anderson vs. Ric Flair vs. Sting ©

After an initial staredown and some pushing between Anderson and Flair, the not so unexpected happens: Anderson and Flair teams up against Sting! It's an uphill battle all along, but Sting fights with all he has and somehow escapes several near pinfall attempts by Flair. Flair quickly gets tired of this, and starts complaining to the ref for not counting fast enough. Anderson then mis-times a clothesline when Sting ducks, and hits Flair instead who proceeds to be tossed over the top rope. Sting exploits the confusion to do a flash pinfall on Anderson for the win.

Winner, and still champion: Sting

Rating C+ (quite dissapointing)

After the match, a furious Flair and Anderson beats down on a helpless and drained Sting. But just when it looks the most dire for the US champion, Nitro is stunned to see a surprise return by no other than Sting's old friend, Lex Luger, who saves Sting and chases the attackers out of the ring. Luger then helps up Sting and they celebrate together. What on earth is Luger doing here in the first place? Isn't he working for that silly other promotion with the much less interesting matches...?

Rating: B+

We now tune in to tonight's main event:

Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage vs. Meng and Shark

A standard back and forth match where Hogan looks poised to grab the win with a big boot and leg drop when him and Savage are assaulted by Kamala and Zodiac, prompting the ref to disqualify the Dungeon.

Winners: Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage

Rating: B-

2 against 4, Hogan and Savage suffers quite a beatdown untill Sting and Lex Luger runs to the ring to make the save. The Dungeon is evicted from the ring and retreats, and Hogan, Savage, Sting and Luger are seen celebrating and talking in the ring.

Rating: B+

They are joined by Okerlund, who asks Hogan whether he would invite Luger to his team for the Fall Brawl WarGames. After some hesitation and protests from Savage, who says he doesn't yet trust Luger, Hogan decides to invite Luger, whom Sting has vouched for. Luger accepts, and Hogan now has a full team for WarGames again!

Rating: A

Show rating: C - and a note that the fans lack really hot storylines (Ouch!)

Pro Wrestling Torch by Wade Keller

Rumours are flying in the industry that two of ECW's top stars are set to leave the company and have posted a seven notice period with new head booker Jesse Ventura.

My sources have been quick to deny that either of the workers is leaving due to creative differences and that Ventua's appointment this morning had nothing to do with their sudden decisions.

The decisions are set to impact on tomorrow's Hardcore TV and Ventura has been locked in creative meetings with his closest allies since the news broke.

Matters are set to become a little clearer following tomorrow's broadcast.

WHAT WENT DOWN AFTER RAW, Talent Signings, SMOKING GUNS NO SHOW??? and the latest on Vader

By Mike Johnson Tuesday week 2 sept 1995

word going down is the smoking guns were told plans have changed, sources say, that the match will take place at RAW NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS

which is to be held the monday before IN your house on ppv.

The crowed was exicited for HBK VS Diesel title vs title, this has to be the first time the world champ put his title on the line in a match against the ic champ where the ic title was on the line since wrestlemania 6 when the ultimate warrior and hulk hogan faced each other.

Match of the night has to have been razor vs bret, yoko and shawn would have taken that crown had it went on longer than 8 minutes with a dq finish. but i have a heard its part of a long storyline planned with those 3 individuals.

man did the crowed hate bambam vs holly. I did notice some improvement with holly, but this was terrible.

Expect major announcements in the coming days weeks on major talent signings to the WWF, Also Vader is expected to debut anytime between now and In your House on ppv

ECW Hardcore TV

From the sold-out Viking Hall in Philadelphia

Pre-Show

Rey Mysterio Jr defeated La Parka & Psicosis in a hotly contested three way elimination match (17:00)

Too Cold Scorpio accepted Mikey Whipwreck's challenge for a ECW Television Title shot tonight!

The Show

The show opens with Cactus Jack in the ring bemoaning once again the crowd's rabid bloodlust and their demanding hardcore matches. The ECW theme kicks in and Paul Heyman marches out into the arena. He tells Cactus in no uncertain terms that if he doesn't like how things are done around here, he can get the 'F' out - if anybody else will have him. Cactus tells him that he has a pretty good offer on the table somewhere else and that if Heyman wants him to stay he'll need to start making some big changes around here.

Heyman tells Cactus and, delivering his lines to camera, the rest of the locker room that they can either do things his way or leave. He's heard a lot of rumours about different people leaving ECW and that's not on. There's only one way out of this company and that's on his terms so tonight EVERY ECW title will be on the line and the message is simple, if you lose the match, you lose your job.

Turning to Cactus he tells him that he'd better have his working gear as tonight he'll be facing The Sandman in a Streetfight for the ECW World Title!

Heyman and Jack leave as Too Cold Scorpio makes his way down to the ring.

We cut backstage and see Mikey Whipwreck being assualted by Taz! The Human Wrecking Machine leaves Whipwreck lying in a pool of blood and heads off towards the ring! Looks like we have a change in the ECW TV Title match!

Taz def Too Cold Scorpio in 6:55 for the ECW TV Title in a hardcore match. During the match Too Cold Scorpio's nemesis Konnan interfered but hit Taz with a chair shot by accident, despite the confusion Taz still had enough in the locker to take out Scorpio. (D-)

Backstage Terry Funk cuts a passionate interview that he's ready to prove himself as being loyal to ECW and that's why tonight he's asked for a #1 Contender's Match for the ECW World Title and whoever loses, leaves ECW forever! Paul has agreed to the request and the mystery opponent will be working under the same terms!

Terry Funk def Scott Steiner in 8:25 to be declared #1 Contender for the ECW World Title. During the match, Steiner was distracted by Stevie Richards leading directly to Funk's roll-up victory. (D-)

Scott Steiner is lead away by security as Richards stands in the ring and gloats. Raven heads down to the ring and our next title match is on!

Public Enemy defeated Raven & Richards to win the ECW Tag Team Titles in 11:52 when Johnny Grunge pinned Raven following Rick Steiner's interference on Stevie Richards. (D+)

Cactus Jack cuts a stinging promo on The Sandman backstage explaining that he is exactly what is wrong with ECW and wrestling today. By beating The Sandman at his own game, Cactus will show that the world is ready for a change

The Sandman defeats Cactus Jack in 17:45 to retain the ECW World Title in a vicious street fight.

After the show goes off air, Cactus is joined in the ring by Raven, Scott Steiner & Too Cold Scorpio who salute the crowd and applaud them on their way out of the ECW ring. Stevie Richards is also with the group but looks less happy about matters.

Pro Wrestling Torch with Wade Keller

ECW continues to blur the line between fiction and reality with their latest edition of ECW Hardcore TV.

A memorable show necessitated by the sudden departures of no less than four main eventers to major rival WWF, Hardcore TV was as good as you could hope for given the explanations that were needed to alter all of the promotion's major storylines.

What you saw from Paul Heyman last night was the truth. ECW have no time to waste in investing in guys who don't want to work for them anymore and so they cut them loose by giving the rub to other workers and passing on their titles.

All of the wrestlers were described as having been professional in their outlook and only Too Cold Scorpio was said to have been upset at the decision to lose to Taz in the manner that he did.

The only wrestler who lost last night after Heyman had instigated his 'loser leaves town' rules and hasn't signed up with another company was Stevie Richards - it'll be interesting to see how ECW incorporate this into their storylines or whether they'll ignore the fact and hope it goes away!

What is certain, however, is that there is now a massive gap at the top of the ECW card and it's not certain at this stage who is going to fill those positions.

Keep reading the Torch for more exclusive WWF, WCW & ECW news

Heh, Ritchardo... I'd say you got the most out of a touch situation (that will arguably get even tougher once WWF signs even more of your workers). What rating did Hardcore TV get?

Feel free to sign Sabu, btw... he's only on a PPA contract with me, and I don't plan on making it written.
