January 1994 - Bushido Launch Press Conference with BFC President Richard Wright

Since October 1993 we've been putting together the right product here at Bushido and I think we now have it. What we will be doing today is outlining our strategy, our goals, what we think of the UFC, introducing out small roster to you and taking any questions you might have as we begin this journey.

The first thing to specify is that we are not No Holds Barred. Our rules are quite clear. We find the UFC to be barbaric and not in keeping with the warrior spirit or the values of shoot fighting and combat sports. The way we work things are a bit different so here goes

None Title fights will take place over 3 Ten Minute rounds.

Title Fights will take place over 5 Ten Minute rounds.

If no finish is achieved in the time limit the decision will be in the hands of 3 judges who will score the fight.

Striking a downed opponent is legal

The referee can seprate fighters who he deems to be inactive

Closing guard while on the ground is legal

Knee strikes to the head of a downed opponent are ILLEGAL

Elbow strikes to the head of an opponent are ILLEGAL

Stomps to a downed opponent are ILLEGAL

We will place our matches inside a ring rather then a cage,

Due to the fact I made a lot of money producing movies and TV shows over the years we have a significant financial advantage over the UFC which has given us the edge in terms of fighter deals. I have used every contact and favour under the sun to produce a PPV deal with WOWOW 1 and a TV show with the Tokoyo Broadcasting System.

We have two divisions - a Heavyweight and a Light Heavyweight division. The Heavyweight division is 206 - 300 llbs and the Light Heavyweight Division is 170 -205 llbs.

Bart Vale is a true legend of the fight game. After competing as a kickboxer, Vale trained in grappling and freestyle fighting under Masami Soranaka and Yoshiaki Fujiwara of the Japan-based Universal Wrestling Federation.

Vale coined the term “shootfighting” to describe this new mixed martial arts style that combined kickboxing with shooting (to rush in and take down your opponent), or legitimate wrestling.

World Famous Actor and tough man Chuck Norris is our co-commentator for this. He has starred in some of my films and is currently starring in new hit TV sereis Walker, Texas Ranger. We are happy he is involved with this project. He is a close, personal friend of mine.</div>

And now our starting roster of competitors:

Alberta Cerra Leon - He is a 6 foot 1 Inch 23 year old from Jalisco, Mexico and is a boxer. He is fighting in the Light Heavyweight Division

Art Jimmerson - He is a 6 foot 1 30 year old Sunnydale, Cailfornia in the USA and is a Boxer. He is fighting in the Heavyweight Division.

Fred Ettish is from Beniji USA and is a Light Heavyweight Competitor. He fights with a Karate style and stands 6 feet tall. The 27 year old is considered to be just about one of the most consistent threats in a fight of anyone in the world.

"The World's Most Dangerous man" Ken Shamrock is a one of the best fighters in the world with a 3-0 record and will be fighting in our Heavyweight Division. Ken is 29 and stands 6 foot 1 inches tall. He is a shoot fighter.

Minoki Ichihara - He is from Tokoyo, Japan and is a Karate Specialist. He will be fighting in our Light Heavyweight Dvision.

"The Russain Bear" Oleg Taktarov is a sambo fighter from Gorky, Russia. He stands 6 feet tall and is 25 years old. He has a 3-0 record and will be fighting in our Heavyweight division.

Patrick Smith is a tae Kwon Do specialist with a perfect 250-0 record in that sport. He is 6 feet 2 inches tall, 30 years old and will be fighting in our Heavyweight division.

Ray Wizard is a Karate Practioner and is a 25 year old form Sunnydale, California in the USA. He will be fighting in our Light Heavyweight Division.

Royce Gracie is perhaps one of the most gifted fighters on the planet even if right now he is living in the shadow on world number 1 Rickson Gracie, his relative. Royce is a practioner of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, a family art form that they claim will beat anything. He is 6 feet tall, 26 years old and is fighting in our Light Heavyweight Division.

50 year old "Black Dragon" Ron Van Clief is from Sunnydale, California in the USA. He is a practioner of Chinesse Goju and has annoucned he will retire in 3 months or after his next fight which ever happens first. He will compete in our Light Heavyweight division as a great way to end his career. He will then hopefully stay on with the company in a staff role.

Our First PPV will be the first Saturday in February and will consist of a Bushido Light Heavyweight Title fight and a 4 Man tournament to decide Number 1 Contender. The matches are:

The screen fades for the pay per view provided WOWOW 1's logo to Richard Wright, the BFC President. He stands in the middle of the ring with an empty arena surroudning him.

Wright: i would like to take this opportunity for joining us tonight on PPV. The UFC are telling you a lot of things right now but I think you, the fight community, will make the correct choice. The UFC isn't combat sport - it's **** fighting. If you want that kinda thing check them out. But tonight you see Royce Gracie and Minoki Ichihara colide for the heavyweight title. So sit back and enjoy. Let the games begin

Bart Vale: Classy guy Chuck. Now to our first fight of the evening

Chuck: It's a semi final in the Light Heavyweight tournament between Ray Wizard and Albertta Cerra Leon

RESULT: Ray Wizard wins by Submission via a guilotine choke in the second round at 7:56

Chuck: So Wizard advances to the next Round Bart

Bart: Ok the next semi final may be the last night of fighting for one legend of combat the Black Dragon - Ron Van Clief. He takes on Fred Ettish

Music starts to play and - Come as you are by Nirvana - and Bart Vale walks into the cage.

Vale: Hailing from Susanville, California with a career record of 3-0 he a master of the art of shoot fighting, and I should know I invented it, he is 29 years old and stands 6 feet 1 inches tall - the world's most dangerous man - Ken Shamrock.

Ken Shamrock walks down to the ring and waves to the crowd for a while before taking the mic.

Shamrock: Thank you for your warm welcome. I chose BFC rather then the UFC because this is legit, This thing is real. The UFC is some bull**** guys from bars brawling. This is fighting and tomorrow night on TBS I will become Heavyweight Champion.

Bart: Now we have the final. No time for Ettish to rest he takes on the slightly more rested Ray Wizard.

Chuck: but remember Wizard went into the second round and Ettish didn't.

Bart: great point there Chuck. Lets see what happens. This for a Light Heavyweight Title shot later this year.

RESULT: Ettish by submission via Triangle Choke in the Second Round at 9:07

Rating: Average

Bart Vale: Now the fight we have all been looking forward to - Ichihara Vs Gracie. Let see what they had to say

Gracie: I believe that Gracie Jui Jitsu is the greatest martial art in the world. I am the best fighter in the world. No disrespect meant but he can't win. I will win. The victory is assured.

Wright: Yeah the Gracies are running around telling everyone this jui jitsu stuff is the b****s and I can't blame them. I have to see it for myself but yeah he's good.

Ichihara: I will fight for my pride. i will fight for my country. This is very big day for me and I will not let down the honour of my family here in Kanto. I will become champion.

Gracie: He does not have the skills to beat me. Logic dictates that I win

Wright: These guys are good. This is the way you kick of a company. Lets see the UFC top this!

RESULT: Gracie by Crucifix in First Round at 7:18 to become the first BFC Light Heavyweight Champion.

Rating: Good

Bart Vale goes into the ring with Wright. Wright places the title around the waste of Gracie.

Vale: How does it feel?

Gracie doesn't answer and leaves the ring. There is a little bit of confusion as the show goes off the air.

BFC Way of the Warrior Episode 1

Bushido: Way of the Warrior Opening Title Sequence

Music: Come as your are by Nirvana

The scene opens with Wright at the Bushido Press conference launch

We find the UFC to be barbaric and not in keeping with the warrior spirit or the values of shoot fighting and combat sports

Various shots from BFC 1 of Royce Gracie fighting Ichihara for the title. Royce putting on the Crucifix. Royce getting the title placed around his waist.

Shots of the Number 1 Contenders tournament from BFC 1. Fred Ettish putting on the triangle choke to win the whole thing.

Gracie: I believe that Gracie Jui Jitsu is the greatest martial art in the world. I am the best fighter in the world.

We see Ken Shamrock sitting with his head bowed in the locker room and here his voice

Shamrock: I will win tonight the BFC made a big mistake giving me who they did in the semi. Oleg has a 3-0 record. Me and Him? That was the final! When I beat him and i will - I'll be champ

Royce Gracie is standing having his picture taken with the title belt - we hear his voice

Gracie: Shamrock only win title because Rickson isn't here to take it. He can enjoy title now until Rickson take it from him some day soon

Shamrock: You know what Royce can shut the **** up as far as I'm concerned. Rickson is gonna beat me? The guy who'll probably go the UFC cause that's his standard? **** him he's a *****. One day real soon I'll show the world why the Gracie's suck.

The pyro's goes off as the show starts. Vale & Norris are in there positions

Vale: What a show last night was. If you missed it - Royce Gracie became the first BFC Light Heavyweight Champion and Fred Ettish confirmed his place as No.1 Contender to that same title by beating 2 men in one night. Hello I'm Bart Vale and next to me is Chuck Norris

Norris: hey folks welcome to a great debut show on TBS. We have a great 4 man, 1 night Heavyweight title tournament for you. First of all Bart did I hear Royce right? is Rickson coming to BFC?

Vale: I sure hope so Chuck. I would love to see him in the BFC. The place to the best combat sport athletes in the world. Right here on TBS.

Norris: Time for our first fight and it's "The Russian Bear" Oleg Taktarov vs "The World's Most Dangerous Man" and Bart Vale's man crush - Ken Shamrock

Vale: I respect the guy and I agree with him. These two should have met in the final. they both have a 3-0 record and this one is such a close call. Except its' not and Shamrock will win

RESULT: KEN SHAMROCK BY ARMBAR SUBMISSION 1ST ROUND 5:17

RATING: GREAT

Vale: See what did I tell you?

Camera shows a shot of Royce Gracie sitting in the crowd with his title belt and his relative Rickson Gracie sitting right next to him.

Norris: Rickson Gracie in the house. Has he signed? I haven't heard anything about that.

Vale: they seem to be finding something funny. I don't think that impressed them very much.

Norris: Time for Semi Final Number 2. This pits Art Jimmerson against Patrick Smith in a clash of styles between boxer and Tae Kwon Do. Smith claims to have a perfect 250 record in Tae Kwon Do. I think it's perfect bull**** but there you have it.

RESULT: PATRICK SMITH BY JUDGE'S DECISION

RATING: POOR

Vale: The Gracie's not impressed at all. In fact half way through that fight I think I saw Rickson go to leave only to be stopped by Royce.

Norris: Ken Shamrock coming to the cage for the final. He appears to shouting abuse at the Gracie's.

Vale: Come on Ken what would Jesus do?

Norris: Royce is not happy. Holy **** Ken Shamrock just spat at Royce Gracie. It's final time People. Patrick Smith Vs Ken Shamrock for the title.

RESULT: KEN SHAMROCK VIA TKO FIRST ROUND 1:15

Vale: That was brutal! He took down Smith and pounded his head into the matt. I have never seen anything like it. The ref had not choice but to stop it. It's like he snapped.

Norris: he took all the pent up anger he was firing at Gracie and turned it at Smith.

Richard Wright puts the title on Shamrock's waste and Vale gets into the ring to have a word.

Vale: Ken Congratulations. How does it feel?

Shamrock: I did what I said and I destroyed him. I knew Oleg was my only competition tonight. Scratch that in the world. No disrespect to Patrick Smith he's just no on my level.

Vale: You seemed to be having a problem with the Gracie's tonight

Shamrock: You know what I've head what they've been saying about me and about Jui Jitsu or whatever the **** it is

Vale: Please Ken don't swear we're on TV

Shamrock: Don't swear? Get out of my face. Rickson Gracie you stupid piece of ****. Run away to the UFC cause you can't beat me. Royce you're gonna get yours eventually. Rickson if you think of coming here - remember - i am the worlds most dangerous man. I will end you

Norris: That's all we have time for folks. Royce is literally holding back Rickson and the BFC President Richard Wright looks majorly angry at Ken Shamrock. For all of us here at BFC and for TBS this is Chuck Norris saying goodnight.

A press conference is set up and Richard Wright is standing behind a podium with 4 chairs on his right and the same on his lfet. There are microphones in front of each chair. There are some people sitting at a table in front of the stage. Richard tries to bring the room to quiet. Some 50 or so journalists are there from all over the world.

Wright: Glad that you could all make it. First I would like to say that according to the blurcat.com rating system, which is the most accurate way of testing the growth of BFC we have grown 30% over those last two shows. They had great reviews and over 1,200 people tuned into watch. Now TBS isn't happy with those figures but they did not put out one advert to let people know it was on. You had to work to find our show. I was insulted at how little effort they put in. So i was pleased that so many found us. It was a great success and if you had watched you saw Ken Shamrock behave like a jackass. Ken Shamrock has been told that one more outburst like that will lead to suspension. Now Ken has promised to behave tonight and as such I wanna call him out to come and take a seat.

Ken Shamrock comes walking out and places his title belt in front of him.

Wright: You'll wanna hear this Ken.Rickson Gracie has signed a none Exclusive 8 fight deal with us that starts right away. We have 30 months to meet this as we have guarenteed all 8 fights. Rickson Gracie has decided to fight in the Light Heavyweight division.

Ken Shamrock punches the table with his fist. and shouts "I knew he was a *****"

Wright: Ken shut up right now ok. Our next event on the first Sunday in April will be a big on. BFC 2: Openweight. This is a 8 man, 1 night Tournament to decide who the best of the best really is rightnow in BFC. Ken you're in it. Rickson is in it. Royce is in it. And here is the tournament line up:

Rickson Gracie (2-0) will fight Art Jimmerson (0-1)
Fred Ettish (2-0) will fight Ken Shamrock (5-0)
Minoki Ichihara (0-1) will fight Oleg Taktarov (0-1)
Patrick Smith (1-1) will fight Royce Gracie (1-0)

Wright: the nature of this tournament is to showcase just why we are superior to the UFC in almost every way. We have the best fighters, we put on the best shows and we are the most talked about fight organisation in the world. Now what's gonna happen is the 8 guys competing in the tournament are gonna have a few minutes to talk about why they think they can win it and then if you have any questions they will be happy to answer them.

Wright is standing at the podium while the press conference continues. Sitting to his left is Royce Gracie, Rickson Graciem, Oleg Taktarov and Miinoki Ichihara and to his right Ken Shamrock, Art Jimmerson, Patrick Smith and Fred Ettish.

Wright: Ok Gentleman we're gonna start this with each of you making a statement about why you become openweight champion. Ken why don't you get us started.

Shamrock: I am the BFC Heavyweight Champion. Apparently some people wanna fight around me cause there *****. But they won't get a chance. I will win this thing. I will beat both Gracie's in one night. I will take Rickson's smug little face and pound the **** out of it.

Patrick Smith: I guess I'm next. I'm a veteran of 250 tae kwon do fights which I have won every single time.

There is a ripple of laughter from the Gracie's and the crowd in attendance

Smith: yeah I know you don't believe me but check my record I ain't lying. I can win thing. Just wait and see

Jimmerson: I prefer to leave it int he ring but lets just say I think my game is improving all the time and I look forward to the big night.

Ettish: Well i had a pretty good start 2-0 right? If I do the same again I'll be champ. I won a 1 night tournament allready so why not win another?

Taktarov: I can win. I am good. Shamrock get lucky. I win. This time I win.

Ichihara: Mr Gracie is fine competitor. I have much respect for Mr Gracie. I will do better for myself and for my country.

Rickson Gracie: I am not worried about anyone other then Royce. Everyone else here doesn't have what it takes. Our Jiu Jitsu, hopefully your reporter will spell it correctly this time, is better then anything else on the planet. Shamrock better not get in my face again. He doesn't have what it takes to be a champion.

Shamrock jumps up from his chairs and waves his title belt in the direction of Rickson Gracie

Rickson Gracie: I can take that any time I want

Shamrock tries to rush for him but Jimmerson and Patrick Smith hold him back. Royce Gracie stands up and whispers in Rickson Ear. Rickson fake lunges at Ken and they both laugh. Now Fred Ettish is also holding Shamrock back

Shamrock: yeah well **** you **** you you little **** I will destroy you I will murder your ass you ****ing arrogant little prick. I'm the world most dangerous man and you're a *****. That's it Rickson walk away you **** walk away because after I'm done with you you won't be able to walk

Wright shakes his hands and walks after the Gracie's

Shamrock: That's it go kiss there ass!

Wright comes back on stage and gets nose to nose with Ken Shamrock

Wright: Hit me Ken if I'm a kiss ass hit me! Give me a reason to fire your ass!

Ken backs down and they shake hands

Wright: that's all for today now I guess. You can't say this **** isn't at least funny. You get enough macho guys in the room **** like this is gonna happen we just try to keep the fighting in the ring. So check us out on WOWOW 1 for BFC 2: Openweight. Thanks
